SEAFORD TRAGEDY: MURDER ARREST

Police officer charged ■ A Police sergeant has been charged following an internal investigation.

The male sergeant, from Southern Metro Region, was charged with two counts of summary assault.

The alleged incident is said to have taken place in November last year while the officer was on duty.

He has been suspended with pay and will be summoned to appear at a Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

Foreshore camping go-ahead

■ Foreshore camping at Mornington Peninsula Shire managed reserves in Rye, Rosebud and Sorento will resume on January 2.

The Summer Reading Club is part of the Libraries Change Lives Campaign which aims to raise awareness of the ways in which libraries can have a positive effect on the community.

The launch will to take place online with students from Dandenong West Primary School and Wooranna Park Primary School to be attending.

Special guest for the launch was to be Wendy Orr (pictured), who is an author of several children’s books, including Nim’s Island which has been adapted into a feature film.

■ POLICE have laid charges after the ftally stabbing of Langwarrin 26-year-old Cam Smith at Seaford last week.

Jack Ledlin, 19, from Somers was charged with the murder of Mr Smith.

Police allege Ledlin stabbed Cameron in an unprovoked attack.

The court heard th alleged incident was caught on CCTV, and will play a crucial role in the investigation.

Ledlin was remanded in custody and did not apply for bail. He appeared at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court where he was further remanded to March 25 for a committal mention hearing.

A 21-year-old Somers woman has been charged with affray and assault and was toface court later.

An 18-year-old Frankston man was arrested at an address in Carrum Downs.

Homicide Squad detectives arrested a fourth person. A 17-year-old male from Frankston, was charged with affray, intentionally cause injury and commit offences whilst on bail. He has been bailed appear at a Children’s Court at a later date.

● Police want to talk with his man.

■ Police are appealing for public assistance after a man was assaulted in Safety Beach last month.

Investigators were told an unidentified man approached an on-duty security guard and verbally abused him before pushing and head-butting him outside the front of a marina on Marine Drive about 10.15pm on October 15.

The victim, a 19-year-old Lyndhurst man, sustained minor injuries during the incident.

The wanted man is described as 185cm tall, messy brown hair, aged between 30 and 40 years-of-age wearing a green jacket, black track pants, black pull-on boots and was carrying a fishing rod.

■ Jaala Pulford, Minister for Small Business, late last week banged the drum that the Andrews Labor Government claims it will pay all small business supplier invoices within 10 business days – the fastest government payments timeline in Australia.

Yeah, sure. Ms Pulford’s department took up to 59 days to pay some small business grants during COVID-team, when its website made claims of five business days.

Christmas sitting

■ State Parliamentarians are due back in Spring St next week for the final three sitting days (Dec. 8-9-10). Members of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council are expected to leave skid marks as they leave the Parliament House car park when the 2020 term finishes on Thursday next week.

Taking the Fifth

■ The perception is that Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien does not land too many blows on the Andrews Government.

Last week, Mr O’Brien made reference to the “horrific homicide” of 23-year-old Celeste Manno.

“It is tragically clear yet again that the current regime of risk assessments for those who breach intervention orders is not doing enough to protect vulnerable Victorians,” Mr O’Brien said.

“The Manno family has said that Celeste’s killer breached intervention orders taken out by her after she was bombarded with vile messages and stalked through fake social media accounts.

“Celeste’s father, Tony Manno, said the justice system failed his daughter: ‘It let my daughter down … it’s gotta be changed. It won’t bring her back but it has to be changed’.

“What changes will the Attorney now make to a justice system that so terribly failed Celeste Manno and too many other Victorian women?”

Attorney-General Jill Hennessy said she could not comment on specific cases: “I of course would be absolutely mindful of not saying anything that jeopardises a fair and effective investigation and prosecution of such matters.”

■ Ryan Smith, Warrandyte MLA, last week brought to the attention of Speaker Colin Brooks that the Andrews Government was slow to answer questions on notice.

“There are 483 questions I have here that have yet to be answered,” Mr Smith said.

Barton’s strength

■ Rod Barton, MLC (Eastern Metropolitan), is finding his strength as an independent. Last week he issued media releases on subjects including the Airport Rail Link, commercial passenger vehicle reforms, and an expansion of the free tram zone. He is the is the founder of the Transport Matters Party.

45-week wait

■ The 45-week wait for Doncaster East couple Mr and Mrs Collins for a n historical marriage certificate has been raised in State Parliament by Warrandyte MLA Ryan Smith.

The longest waiting time on the Births, Deaths and Marriages Victoria website suggests a four-week processing time.

“Unfortunately Mr and Mrs Collins are still waiting for the certificate some 45 weeks later. Mr and Mrs Collins have tried to make contact with the agency through various means but have been unable to speak with anyone or to have any advice given to them on when they will receive their certificate,” Mr Smith said.

It is estimated that the Mornington Peninsula Shire foreshore camp grounds will operate at approximately 80 per cent capacity to support social distancing and to ensure adequate space between sites. There will be no casual booking offered at this stage.

■ Frankston has missed the train - again. The State Budget contained big dollars for rail projects - but not a single dollar for the longproposed Frankston line extension.

Ginerva Hosing, Committee for Greater Frankston CEO, aid the extension was vitally important "so Frankston and Mornington Peninsula residents can board trains at stations near where they live.

Iinstead they must drive into Frankston's CBD just to park and further restricting the suburban centre's growth and development".

On Budget day, Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas matched the federal $5 billion funding for Airport Rail Link, and announced $2.2 billion for the $50 billion Suburban Rail Loop through Melbourne's middle suburbs.

Ms Hosking applauded the spending on "big rail" but said the harsh reality for Frankston was that congestion and lack of affordable parking in its CBD would not improve until the rail extension was built to Langwarrin or Baxter with a commuter park and ride for 1000 plus cars at one or both places.

Frankston station has just 416 commuter car parks. Weekdays the car park is full by 6.20am.

Nearby car parks are gone by the time most Frankston workers arrive.

Frankston, Langwarrin and Baxter have been short-changed by the State Government’s refusal to fund the local rail extension, says the Committee for Greater Frankston.

“We need the basics - actually getting people on the train, without commuter parking and traffic clogging Frankston's CBD,"saqid CEO Ginerva Hosking. "Visionary rail projects like airport link and suburban loop are of little direct benefit if we can't get more people on a train at their local station. When airport link opens, things might deteriorate even further - air travellers could leave their cars in Frankston's CBD and make the 95minute train trip to the airport.”

■ A report will be made to a 2021 meeting of Greater Dandenong Council about a 152signature peition to ‘Save The Springvale Trees’. The petition - collected through change.org - was tabled at the Council meeting in September.

The petition after a notice of motion was circulated in relation to removal of trees from parking bays between Balmoral Ave and Windsor Ave, with the intended purpose of creating on-street parking spaces.

Doggone it ■ Summer beach restrictions for dogs in Frankston municipality started yesterday (Tues., Dec. 1) and continue until Wednesday. March 31.

Dogs are not permitted on any beach between 9.30am and 7.30pm during these months. Dogs are permitted on the beach before 9.30am and after 7.30pm provided they are under the effective control of a chain, cord or leash.

January start for camping ■ Foreshore camping at Mornington Peninsula Shire managed reserves in Rye, Rosebud and Sorento will resume on January 2.

The decision was taken late last week after the Shire undertook a detailed risk assessment following the State Government’s Coronavirus roadmap announcement.

Mornington Peninsula Shire CEO John Baker said the overall easing of restrictions and in particular an increase in outdoor gathering numbers guided the Council’s thinking.

“We have been monitoring the situation on a weekly basis with the health and wellbeing of our community, campers, visitors and staff at the forefront of our thinking,” Mr Baker said.

“After reviewing the details in the Premier’s recent announcement and considering the risks, we concluded it was safe to resume camping, albeit with some ongoing COVID requirements in place.

“I’m delighted we can allow the camping tradition to continue on the Peninsula this summer and I implore our campers to do the right thing to ensure a safe and successful season”.

Campers who had pre-booked for January will be contacted to determine if they wish to reactivate their booking.

■ There is expected to be follow-up action this week from Greater Dandenong City over a 14-signature petition presented to the October Council meeting, to have a shelter made available at the Roth Hetherington Reserve, Keysborough Dog Park.

A Council officer agreed that a shelter would be a good idea and enhance the amenity of the park. A public draft for comment is likely to occur in 2021, with the Budget process to be completed by June.

■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing Eumemmerring teenager Chloe Sutcliffe.

The 15-year-old was last seen at her home in Eumemmerring on Wednesday, November 25.

Police and family have concerns for Chloe’s welfare due to her age.

Chloe is described as Caucasian in appearance, 165cm tall with a slim build and blonde hair.

Police have released an image of Chloe in the hope someone may have information on her current whereabouts.

■ KX Architecture has submitted a proposal to Greater Dandenong Council to have a planning permit changed so that more customers could be accommodated at a function centre planned for 39 Princes Hwy, Dandenong South.

The permit allowed for the use of the site for a function centre, buildings and works associated with the use of the site for a function centre, the reduction in car parking requirements, the wavier of bicycle facilities, the sale and consumption of liquor and advertising signage.

Works: North, South, East and West ■ Victorians are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra travel time this summer, with work on Victoria’s Big Build.

Jacinta Allan, Minister for Transport Infrastructure, last week visited Werribee St, one of three level crossings currently being removed in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing.

Werribee Street will be the State Government’s 45th level crossing removal, as works ramp up across the state on a number of road and rail projects.

Buses are replacing trains between Laverton and Werribee until Sunday (Dec. 6).

Work will also continue on more than 20 level crossings across Melbourne, with buses replacing trains for around a week at a time for works in Pakenham, Lilydale, Mooroolbark, Edithvale, Chelsea, Bonbeach and Glenroy Rd – where the level crossing will be closed for seven weeks from January 8 as works ramp up for the new rail trench.

Deep under the city, the Metro Tunnel is a year ahead of schedule – with the rail tunnel excavation at State Library Station to be complete next month and TBMs Joan and Meg tunnelling from Parkville to the CBD. Annual maintenance on the West Gate Bridge will take place from Boxing Day until January 6, with three of the five outbound lanes to be closed and overnight closures impacting inbound lanes. Holiday makers heading to the Surf Coast are encouraged to plan for delays of up to 60 minutes.

The West Gate Freeway will close in both directions at Grieve Parade between January 6 and 11, and inbound M80 traffic will be detoured, as crews on the West Gate Tunnel project demolish the outdated southbound bridge before rebuilding and strengthening it – with motorists advised to allow up to an extra 60 minutes travel time.

Briefs Green Wedge

■ The Victorian Government is seeking community feedback on stronger planning controls o permanently protect Melbourne’s green wedges and agricultural land.

These important green areas located within 100 kilometres of Melbourne support thousands of jobs in conservation, tourism and agriculture and are also crucial for food production.

The Government says the proposed planning changes will better protect green wedges from overdevelopment while keeping farms on our urban fringes working and feeding our city.

Melbourne’s 12 green wedges cover the areas just outside Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary and provide an essential break between the intensive urban development along the city’s growth corridors.

Fight crime ■ Councils, community organisations and other stakeholders will be able to apply for grants of up to $300,000 for innovative proposals designed to improve community safety and prevent crime before it occurs.

The first round of the Building Safer Communities Program will open in early 2021 and include two competitive grant streams

● Jacinta Allan For six weeks from Monday, January 11, both inbound and outbound ramps from the Princes Freeway to Geelong Rd and the M80 inbound ramp to the West Gate Freeway will also be closed.

From early December, concrete segments manufactured in Benalla will be taken to Footscray Rd to build an elevated road as part of the West Gate Tunnel Project.

These loads will move slowly because of their size and weight, and motorists using CityLink and the M80 Ring Road should be aware and only pass when it is safe.

The Government’s Western Roads Upgrade program will be finished in the new year, easing congestion and improving traffic flow on some of the west’s busiest local roads.

As the final two upgrades are completed, there will be disruptions on Derrimut Rd, Tarneit and Palmers Rd, Truganina.

In the south-eastern suburbs, buses will replace trains between November 26 and December 2 and for five days in January as part of the Cranbourne Line Upgrade, providing for trains every 10 minutes by duplicating the track from Dandenong to Cranbourne.

The Monash Freeway’s new world-class electronic road management signs will undergo testing to

keep the 460,000 vehicles who use it each day moving, and overnight closures and daytime lane closures will also continue over the coming months as crews work to add 36 kilometres of extra lanes to the Monash and Princes Freeways.

Heights will be shut as part of works to build the new Mordialloc Freeway.

Traffic lights are replacing the roundabout to allow traffic to flow more smoothly to and from the new freeway access ramps.

In Melbourne’s north, College Crescent in Parkville will close for two weeks in January between Princes Park Drive and the Swanston St roundabout as crews re-asphalt the road.

Motorists will be detoured using Hoddle St, Nicholson St and Flemington Rd. Crews on the M80 Upgrade – Sydney Rd to Edgars Rd will work around the clock in December to upgrade the Edgars Rd interchange to the Ring Road.

The interchange will close between December 7 and 21 so crews can build a second right turn lane onto the M80 Greensborough-bound, improving traffic flow on and off the freeway.

Work is forging ahead on North East Link, the state’s largest ever road project – with lane closures on Greensborough Rd and Bulleen Rd through summer to allow crews to move underground utilities before major construction begins next year.

On public transport, short tram track renewal works along Bridge Rd and Church St in January will deliver a smoother ride on Route 48 and 75.

In regional Victoria, the final phase of the Ballarat Line Upgrade will also get underway with coaches replacing trains for five weeks from Monday December 28 as crews integrate new track, signalling systems and other infrastructure onto the rail line, paving the way for introduction of extra services for Ballarat Line passengers.

Flinders house approvals up ■ Despite COVID, there has been a 4.8 per cent increase the number of detached house approvals in the electorate of Flinders, when compared with the same time last year.

Greg Hunt, Federal Member, says the construction and trades industries are one of the largest employers on the Mornington Peninsula, with almost 15 per cent of the local community employed in the sector.

Mr Hunt said the national and local figures show the housing economy is recovering strongly.

“With 14.5 per centof Mornington Peninsula residents employed in the building and construction industry and over 4000 running small businesses in the sector, it is important that this sector comes back strongly,” Mr Hunt said.

“Locally, we have had a nearly five percent increase in detached housing approvals in Flinders, with similar growth across the nation.

“This ensures our local tradies have the work they need, while building new homes for the future.

“HomeBuilder is delivering for Australia’s tradies and home buyers, which is driving stimulus in the economy at a time it is needed most.”

The Housing Industry Association says new home sales nationally were up 31.6 per cent.

■ Casey Council Administrators were due to express a change in thinking, at their Tuesday (Dec. 1) meeting, as The Local Paper went to press.

The Council was due to note the publication of the Melbourne Industrial and Commercial Land Use Plan and South East Economic Corridor Strategic Context Report to 2060, and support the findings of these reports for the future of employment land in Casey.

In light of new information contained within these reports, Council was likely to express that rezoning of employment land to residential land in Cranbourne West was no longer supported.

Council observers said the future Casey Fields South Employment Precinct Structure Plan was to be no longer supported.

A recommendation was due to be put to Council that it supports the retention of employment land within the Cranbourne West and Casey Fields South Employment Precinct Structure Plan areas and advise interested parties.

‘STEM’ push at Carrum ■ Sonya Kilkenny, Carrum MLA, has told State Parliament about her delight in telling Carrum Downs Secondary College that it will receive $2.75 million to further modernise the school with upgrades to their science wing “Carrum Downs Secondary College is a tremendous local school that is growing from strength to strength.

“For many years the school community has worked hard to build on and improve this school, activate school pride and identify ways to make the learning experience better for each and every student.

“I know how much the school wants to create a STEM centre and make Carrum Downs Secondary a school of excellence in the areas of science, technology, engineering and maths, and I wish to acknowledge the efforts of the school community,” Ms Kilkenny said.

Dromana Carols By Headlights ■ Carols by Headlights has been organised by 12 local community organisations ith some added help from the Mornington Peninsula Shire.

The event will be held over three nights at the Dromana Drive-In. The screening will feature performances from carols groups from across the Shire, local musicians and singers, guest appearances from local celebrities and Santa.

Mornington Peninsula Mayor Cr Despi O’Connor said that with only three operating drive-in theatres in Victoria, this will be a uniquely Peninsula way to celebrate Christmas this year.

“I’m so pleased the Shire could help by securing the Dromana Drive-In and commissioning the Peninsula Film Office to produce the recording.

There will be prizes for the best dressed Christmas car. A gold coin donation on entry is being requested for the ‘Food for All’ charity to feed members of our community in need this Christmas.

Bayside alert for Celess LOCAL MYSTERY ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teenager Celess Torpy.

Celess has been missing from her Frankston address since November 25.

Concerns are held for her safety and welfare due to her age.

Celess, 14, is of average height and build, has long dark hair, brown eyes and fair complexion.

Celess is known to frequent the Frankston, Cranbourne, Apsendale and Carrum Downs areas.

Investigators have released an image of Celess in the hope that someone may have information on her current whereabouts.

Mt Martha teen on ABC ■ Mount Martha resident and former Woodleigh student ‘Tamsin’ is one of the ABC Takeover Melbourne storytelling competition winners.

There are 31 winners, and also on the list is female athlete ‘Tabitha’ from Seaford, and Yorta Yorta woman ‘Latoya’ from Dandenong.

Takeover Melbourne is a new initiative from the ABC in partnership with VicHealth, Resilient Melbourne and the Centre for Multicultural Youth, amplifying the voices of young Melburnians, aged 12-18.

The Takeover Melbourne winners will be showcased on ABC Radio Melbourne and on ABC TV. They will be celebrated in a virtual Gala event on tomorrow (Thurs., Dec. 3), streamed live on the ABC Melbourne Facebook page. “I’m so proud to be recognised for sharing my story in the first Takeover Melbourne series,” Tamsin said.

■ My second ever review of an online performance: Nightshifters Anonymous from Charlotte Righetti for the 2020 Melbourne Fringe.

I must declare an interest. Charlotte is a friend and colleague. I have directed her.

Six diverse characters all played by Charlotte. Film allows stop/start of each scene, costume changes etc. are a breeze.

But film also has inherent problems for the performer when the online relationship to the audience is one on one. The format; one actor rotating through several characters is like that employed by Katherine Tate, English actor, comedian and writer.

Charlotte is much younger than the 52year old Katherine. She's probably near 30. I take heed of Lady Bracknell's advice "Indeed, no woman should ever be quite accurate about her age. It looks so calculating.”

Charlotte is newer at working the format but her youthful inventiveness that informs her choices made her characters more interesting than a lot of work I've seen from Tate and her ilk and Charlotte's texts are not oversalted with needless scatology.

Who are the Nightshifters? All but one, women and most less than certain about their life and perhaps sadder than their audience.

I saw and heard a woman with what sounded like the residue of a German accent, an Antipodean Dietrich maybe, until she disrobed to her white underwear and white stockings (talk about teenage or any aged male fantasy) and told me in near fury she was stuck .I presume she meant her life.

Another who whilst inattentive to her patients found herself frantically trying to correct her mistake. What I found admirable was Charlotte's move from words to action to carry her narrative.

This is a direct quote from Patrick Collins, the creator/comedian of The New Nine when he draws us into his show, presented at the 2020 Melbourne Fringe Festival through the Digital Fringe platform with director Justin Gardam and producer Kathryn ‘Moose’ Kaelher.

Melbourne lockdown has gifted him the opportunity to ponder the symbol of the number 9.

His premise is that this symbol has to change. He enthusiastically weaves us through his reasoning to convince us that his crusade has merit. We are welcomed into the Number 9 Changing Revolution.

Number 9 and number 6 are too easily confused but, numerically and historically, the number 6 got there first, so 9 has to go; there’s confusion on dice and raffle draws, to name a few.

Choosing a new symbol is an intense and wild journey involving well-researched statistical facts on the lines and curves of numbers.

He explores aesthetics, graphology, penmanship, alphabetic comparisons and sexual sensitivities in his scientific approach to the problem.

He considers everyday problems of digital clocks, microwaves and prices tags employing excessive use of the number 9. Our thoughts diverge with exciting possibilities.

The audience is with Patrick and any doubts as to the virtues of his quest are expelled.

The new symbol for 9 is declared and we believe that Patrick has thought about this more than anyone.

Patrick’s highly energetic performance and passion for the subject is infectious. He demonstrates that lockdown obstacles thrown at skilled, creative performers and writers will prove the adage ‘Pandemic can be the Mother fixing stuff’.

Bored Artists of Melbourne ■ The concept of BAM (Bored Artists of Melbourne) was devised by the Fourth Wall Theatre Company to "feed their arts-starved souls, bring people together and to entertain", after having to postpone two shows planned for 2020.

Artistic Director Natasha Boyd explains: “We used our Fourth Wall Theatre Company connections to reach out to artists we knew were wanting to hone their writing and acting skills within a supportive Zoom community.

“When we asked who would like to perform a five-minute piece to entertain a small audience we were overwhelmed with the response."

The audience initially comprised friends and supporters of Fourth Wall, but positive reviews and word of mouth has seen other theatre lovers joining in.

BAM audiences have been entertained with a variety of monologues and duologues spanning drama, comedy and classics, with both royalty-free and self-written pieces being performed.

Each BAM event concludes with audiences invited to turn on their videos and join the Q and A session and 'foyer chat'.

Susie Sparkes, Company Director, says “This has been an integral part of providing that sense of connection that we are all craving. Many of the audience have commented how it has been wonderful to ask questions of the performers about their pieces. These events have allowed us to support artists we admire and bring likeminded people together.”

The five BAM events so far have entertained an audience just shy of 100 people with 47 acts comprising 39 monologues and eight duos, by 31 actors, all coordinated by Natasha as MC and Susie as the tech whiz.

When safe to do so, Fourth Wall Theatre hopes to present a selection of the performances as a ‘BAM in the Park’ event, before staging their first production in May 2021 at St Martins Theatre which is a double bill of Slut by Patricia Cornelius and What is the Matter With Mary Jane? by Wendy Harmer and Sancia Robinson.

● Dimity Shepherd ■ It's been a catastrophic year for live opera performance, but Victorian Opera is looking to the future and plans to be back with a COVID-safe vengeance in 2021, using larger venues and streaming multiple productions.

Kicking off the 2021 season on February 20 is a fusion of opera and puppetry in the age-old story of The Sleeping Beauty, with music by Italian composer Respighi. Victorian Opera's own beauty, Dimity Shepherd, will play The Queen and The Cat in this lovely work.

March 17-19 will see a double bill of new opera - Echo and Narcissus by Kevin March and Jane Montgomery Griffiths, exploring the myth of the talkative nymph doomed to repeat only the words she hears, and the young man who falls victim to his obsession with his reflection. The second opera, Cassandra, by Simon Bruckard and Constantine Costi follows the story of Cassandra, the young woman with gifts of prophecy who is never believed.

On April 23 Victorian Opera will be presenting Bizet's The Pearlfishers as an opera at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, in a semistaged concert starring Kathryn Radcliffe, Carlos Barcenas, Stephen Marsh and Teddy Tahu Rhodes.

On June 12, Deborah Cheetham's new opera Parrwang Lifts the Sky, telling the creation story of the sunrise in both English and the Wadawurrung language, will be the premier First Nations opera to be performed by the company.

The huge Palais Theatre sees the return of award-winning operatic cabaret Lorelei, starring divas Ali McGregor, Antoinette Halloran and Dimity Shepherd as the high fashion sirens.

Voss takes over the Palais on August 4, starring Samuel Dundas and Emma Pearson in a one-night only performance.

The Who's Tommy comes into the Palais for a season from August 13-21, starring Mat Verevis, Amy Lehpamer, Paul Capsis and Kanen Breen.

A collaboration with Singaporean theatre company Wild Rice called The Butterfly Lovers will be at the Playhouse November 1316, with Schubert's The Friends of Salamanca having its Australian première as Victorian Opera's annual youth opera.

The final offering in this rich operatic buffet is Nicolai's The Merry Wives of Windsor, based on Shakespeare's Falstaff. Performed in association with the Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program, it will be a semi-staged concert with acclaimed maestro Johannes Fritzch conducting Ensemble Q. It's at Melbourne Recital Centre on December 3 and 4.

Artistic Director Richard Mills says 2021 will mark a year of rebirth and discovery.

"After the dark days of 2020, our company is a little like an emerging butterfly. Any crisis can also present opportunities, and while the company's focus has always been on Australian creativity and performers, there is a special urgency in these times to treasure the talent on our doorstep. We shall enable its full potential to flow and to engage our loyal and supportive audience," Mills says.

Victorian Arts Melbourne Opera The Ring Cycle: Das Rheingold Melbourne Opera is pleased to present Wagner's The Ring Cycle.

Commencing with the first of the Ring's four operas, Das Rheingold, the Company will stage the following three operas progressively over the next three years, culminating with a multi- million dollar performance of Wagner's full Ring Cycle in 2023.

The Trouble With Being Born ■ The 2020 science fiction drama film The Trouble With Being Born opens in Australian cinemas on December 3, distributed by Potential Films..

Directed and co-written by Sandra Wollner, this co-production between Austria and Germany featuring English sub-titles has won multi awards in overseas film festivals.

The Melbourne International Film Festival removed this film from its online program after psychologists questioned the depiction of a sexual relationship between an android child and its human 'father'.

Worthy arguments can be made against censorship, but having seen a preview of the movie, I believe this concern is justified.

Wollner has created a brilliantly clever narrative, telling the story of Elli, an android created by a man who lost his own daughter ten years ago.

She calls him 'father' and he programs Elli to remember holidays and events from the past to keep his own memories alive, and at night takes her to bed.

This creatively artistic film disappoints when unnecessarily resorting to provocative behaviour by the robotic, lifelike young girl, raising questions about her relationship with her father and

his suggested techno-pedophilic intentions.

After Elli leaves she is found by someone who changes her identity to Emil and programs new memories, which sometimes cross wires with Elli.

The movie evokes a rollercoaster of emotions - chill and revulsion at the suggested sexual father/daughter relationship, shared appreciation with Elli of the beauty of nature, and the ‘yuk’ factor when the dog laps up his mistress's blood.

There is also some confusion in the narrative which some viewers might interpret as thoughtprovoking.

Realistically, sincere sympathy is felt for those who miss loved ones and try desperately to keep their memories alive.

The concept of creating an android to help remember the past is terrific and offers much potential for furthering this storyline.

Unfortunately, the questionable seductive scenes between Elli and her 'father' disempower an otherwise engaging movie.

Best see the film and make up your own mind.

It’s Ineffable ■ Illumni-Nation Theatre’s Ineffable presented online at the 2020 Melbourne Fringe Festival, explores human challenges encountered during lockdown.

Director Nicholas RenfreeMarks creatively and successfully uses 24 frames per second to achieve conveying “the indescribable yearning” felt in a physically disconnected world.

True to the meaning of the word Ineffable, actors Pearce Hessling and Jack Logan work silently.

Each performer has a striking, expressive presence, with music enhancing mood and movement.

Mish McNamara’s innovative choreography is well executed by the actors to accentuate their pain, longing for social contact, and questioning their being.

REVIEW Having crossed paths in the park, the young men now isolate in their separate residences.

Realistically, whilst inconvenient, this was also the case for millions of others making the same social and personal sacrifices for the common good to eliminate a global pandemic.

When the characters think of escaping their solitary misery by using the mobile phone, a change in music also indicates this time of awakening.

The young men’s communication in the park via the lifesize, clear phone screen is artistically clever.

Critically speaking, to engage an audience the production needs more substantive content in the narrative.

The prolonged, drawn out action certainly represents the tedium of lockdown.

If shows such as Ineffable are archived for future historical reference regarding how people coped in isolation in 2020, hopefully there will also be balanced representation.

While people of all ages missed their social and family contacts, some experiencing tragic personal and financial loss, the negative attitudes of these two characters could be historically misleading.

Logistically, congratulations to Nicholas RenfreeMarks and his team for creating this production challenged by travel and other restrictions during lockdown.

The players’ final bow in the empty theatre is terrific, followed by an enjoyable and interesting post-production chat.

■ While Australia is now coming to the realisation that we can move around without masks in open areas and masks in close quarters, spare a thought for what is happening in the rest of the world.

With the Global Pandemic COVID-19, and with food lines stretching all over the States, and now wild fires in California, it's great to be in the safety of Australia.

Offices are opening, and businesses starting to fire up all over Australia with the exception of Western Australia which still has their border closed to the eastern states.

It was a pleasure to head out to Box Hill RSL which boasts a magnificent three-storey ultra-modern building in the heart of Box Hill with every amenity.

President of Box Hill RSL is John Haward, has been there for over 21 years. He was previously the head of the Victorian Liquor Licensing Commission for over 38 years. John also was a huge contributor to ‘The Hawks’, Hawthorn Football Club.

It took 20 years for these two great mates to rekindle their deep friendship. Now that Alan Johnson is back in Melbourne they met over lunch at Box Hill RSL.

■ Several black leaders and community activists in Portland said that anarchists have hijacked the racial justice movement in America by perpetuating violence.

Anarchists attracted significant media attention nationally over their roles in the riots, looting and arson that erupted following the death of George Floyd in May. While many black activists view President-elect Joe Biden's victory in the 2020 election as an opportunity for social justice reforms, anarchists essentially view Biden and President Donald Trump as bedfellows defending a capitalist economy they seek to dismantle.

Black community leaders and activists have said that the anarchists' actions, like setting a building that houses a police station and black-owned businesses in Portland on fire, weren't helping black Americans.

"When I hear about somebody burning something down, I think about that as an act that's always been used against black people," Ron Herndon, a long time black activist, said at a news conference the morning after police used tear gas to disperse protesters firing paintballs, the LA Times reported.

"You are not helping us."

Obama’s book: a good read ■ Former President Barack Obama's time in The White House was full of challenges not the least of which he says was his relationship with the First Lady.

The former President opens up about his eight years in office in an memoir called A Promised Land and one of his most interesting anecdotes is about how the Presidency took a toll on Michelle.

Obama says he could sense an "undercurrent of tension in her, subtle but constant," despite her own achievements and growing popularity and their roles in America's First Family amplified all of the stress involved.

Barack says: "It was as if, confined as we were within the walls of the White House, all her previous sources of frustration became more concentrated, more vivid, whether it was my round the clock absorption with work, or the way politics exposed our family to scrutiny and attacks, or the tendency of even friends and family members to treat her role as secondary in importance."

He adds that he became wistful many nights while he was lying next to Michelle thinking about the time before he was President "when everything between us felt lighter, when her smile was more constant and our love less encumbered, and my heart would suddenly tighten at the thought that those days might not return."

The poignant excerpt from Obama's 768-page book which comes out next week is just one of many interesting topics he touches on including his historic 2008 election, racism, and of course, Donald Trump.

Money in candy bars

■ Mars, the company behind M&M's and Snickers, is acquiring the maker of Kind bars, the snacks that celebrate their lack of artificial flavours and preservatives, company executives said.

The deal for Kind North America comes three years after Mars, a privately held giant in the candy industry, took a minority stake in the company.

The purchase was confirmed by company executives.

Terms were not formally announced, but people with knowledge of the deal said it valued Kind at about $5 billion.

Inside smoking banned

■ San Francisco politicians are considering yet another policy that would harm renters while infringing on property rights with a ban on smoking inside private apartment buildings.

A committee of the city's Board of Supervisors voted to advance a bill that would ban smoking inside private dwellings located in apartments with three or more units.

The San Francisco Examiner reports that the restrictions would apply not just to tobacco products, but also to smoking marijuana and even to vaping.

The goal, according to bill sponsor Supervisor Norman Yee, is to protect non-smoking apartment dwellers from the fumes of their inconsiderate neighbours.

Slowing down the virus ■ Public health experts have said over and over again that one key to slowing the spread of the coronavirus this winter is limiting holiday celebrations to people in your household, if possible.

But a new online survey says just under 4 in 10 Americans will follow that guideline.

The poll by the tracking site Covid Near You and SurveyMonkey found that 37 per cent of people plan to celebrate Thanksgiving with friends or family they don't live with and the number could go even higher, since about a quarter of the respondents weren't sure what they were doing yet. ■ Yale University has fancy dining halls. They pay no property tax. Local restaurants struggle to compete, but their tax burden makes that hard. "We basically pay one-third of our rent in taxes!" complains Matt West, manager of Koon Thai Restaurant. "Yale is a money-making machine." It is. Many colleges are. Yale has a $31 billion endowment. Harvard's is $40 billion. My alma mater, Princeton, has $26 billion. Yet, these schools also get government handouts and tax breaks.

How government rips off taxpayers and students by subsidizing colleges is the subject of my video this week. Yale owns about a quarter of the town of New Haven, Connecticut, but the school pays little property tax. It even has a golf course that's half tax-exempt. Politicians tried to tax the school, but they cannot. "It's written into the constitution," complains New Haven Board of Alders President Tyisha Walker-Myers.

"They just don't have to pay." Now the city is ticketing more cars to try to cover its budget shortfall. Everyone else pays more because colleges get tax breaks, government grants, and government loans.

Stock prices down ■ The news that Pfizer has developed what appears to be a viable coronavirus vaccine has been taken as good news pretty much everywhere except, maybe, in Zoom's presumably virtual boardroom. The development had an immediate effect on stock prices at companies that have thrived as people were forced to stay at home to flatten the curve of new infections.

According to CNBC, Zoom shares were down more than 15 per cent in premarket trading as hopes were raised that people won't spend the rest of their lives on video calls. Amazon shares dropped 3.4 per cent, and Netflix fell by 5.4 percent. However, despite the hit, it's fair to say 2020 has still been pretty good for Zoom stocks have still shot up in value by 635 per cent during the year so far.

Magazine ■ Deanna Durbin was born 99 years ago on December 4, 1921.

Deanna is fondly remembered for the films and recordings that featured her beautiful soprano voice.

Edna Mae Durbin was born in Canada in 1921. When Edna was only one year old the family moved to California.

Her older sister Edith recognised Edna's singing gift and helped her to take singing lessons.

In 1935 Edna was signed by MGM Studios and changed her name to Deanna Durbin.

Deanna appeared in a 10-minute short film titled Every Sunday where she sang with another young hopeful named Judy Garland.

For the first time we heard Deanna's operatic voice onscreen and their duet at the end of the film is sensational. (It is on You-Tube) In 1936 Deanna signed a contract with Universal Studios. Her first film, Three Smart Girls, was a box office smash and it got the studio out of financial difficulties.

It was not a leading role but Deanna was a ‘standout’ and she received a Juvenile Academy Award.

She worked with Ray Milland and Nan Grey (the wife of Frankie Laine) in Three Smart Girls.

Whilst making films Deanna was also appearing on the Eddie Cantor Radio Show and teamed up with the young singer Bobby Breen.

She was considered for the singing voice of Snow White in the animated film but Walt Disney

Her films included One Hundred Men And A Girl, That Certain Age, Three Smart Girls Grow Up and Christmas Holiday.

By the time Deanna was 21she was the highest paid film star in the world.

Deanna received her first screen kiss from Robert Stack in the film First Love.

Generally her leading men such as Charles Laughton, Joseph Cotton and Vincent Price were much older.

Deanna Durbin represented the teenage daughter that millions of mothers and fathers wished they had.

Her recordings were in demand and most of her released songs came from her films.

Some of her popular recordings included The Turntable Song, Always, The Last Rose Of Summer, My Own and Someone to Care For Me. In 1942 Deanna went on a tour of Army camps to entertain the troops.

Her only technicolour film was Can't Help Singing was released in 1944. She was never happy with glitz and glamour of Hollywood and after making21 films Deanna retired from acting.

She was offered stage roles in Broadway shows such as Kiss Me Kate and My Fair Lady, but turned them down.

In 1950 Deanna married her third husband Charles David in Paris. Charles had directed her in the film Lady On A Train.

Sadly he passed away in 1999. Deanna had two children - Jessica born in 1946 and Peter born in 1951.

Deanna Durbin lived in retirementon a farm just outside of Paris. She died on April 17, 2013.

Legoland re-opens in Melbourne Local Theatre Alice 2

■ Lights are back on with the Melbourne Fringe Festival with the offering of a mathematical challenge in Alice2 in a numbers battle between The King and The Queen.

Using the Japanese RPG (Role Playing Games ) Maker VX ACE software program, James M Walker wrote and directed using the numbers games based on a game of chess, with Alice as a shrewd maths whizz .

By creating a large square on the floor with four inner squares, the square root of any number could lead to check or check mate of The King by a continual multiplication of a number or by just adding a one.

Just how this happened one needs to be very much alert.

While you would need to be maths aware and be quick in your own calculations, it did not matter much as The King often made and changed the rules to suit in trying to remove The Queen.

He was allowed to make the rules as he says he is a public official.

Four figures in black stood at each outside corner of the large square, The King played by Con Coutis, The Queen by Megan Rojales, The Knight by Samuel Pringle, and Alice by Samantha Hafey-Bagg. All are members of the Ithaca Arts Group.

Incidental music is by Tom Ray, generated strong mood variations particularly when The King became frustrated in the delays when seeking a number from either Alice or The Queen to start a new game sequence.

Alice’s aim was to try and overthrow The King and support The Queen. Did she succeed?

■ Australia's only Legoland Discovery Centre has reopened to the public in Melbourne.

Families can enjoy an awesome day out at the ultimate indoor Lego playground, which has implemented several new measures to ensure the health and safety of all visitors and team members.

"We are thrilled to welcome guests back to Legoland Discovery Centre and have been working behind the scenes to ensure the attraction is a safe and fun place for families to visit,” said Katie Isaac, General Manager.

“It is really important for all visitors - including our valued annual pass holders - to pre-book their timeslot in advance as we have capacity restrictions in place to allow for social distancing.”

The health and safety measures, which were originally implemented in June, include regularly disinfecting and cleaning Lego and high-frequency touch points.

The attraction's industrial cleaning machine is being used to wash Lego bricks three times per day.

Other measures include becoming a completely cashless operation, lowering capacity limits with allocated time-slots for guests, the use of additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and clothing for staff, the provision of spatial separation markings, the installation of hygiene screens in various areas and vigorous cleaning regimes.

All visitors aged 12 and above will be required to wear face masks.

"We can't wait to create more bricktastic experiences for families at Legoland Discovery Centre. A visit to our attraction is the perfect day out for kids involving creativity, exploration and playful learning with Lego," Katie said.

"We are very excited to welcome guests back and are also incredibly proud of what we have achieved during the two closure periods.

■ Local film producer, Mark Toia, has demonstrated absolute faith in his work. Mark has stumped up $1.6 million of his own pocket money to write, film and edit a sci-fi thriller, Monsters of Man, that has already won the Audience Award at the Sydney Science Fiction Film Festival.

The official international cinema launch is slated for the new year. The whistle-stop production took in shooting on location in Cambodia , Canada, America and Brisbane.

TV Soap washed away

■ Thirty years ago a new magazine, TV Soap, was born. A week ago TV Soap was published for the last time. Right from the getgo I was amazed it last more than a couple of months, there was no room for such a small niche magazine.

The publishers tried their hardest to keep it alive, but the punters gave it the thumbs down. Keep posted for more mags to fail the pub test and fold.

Details: 2020/MA15+/90 Minutes/Stars: *** Review: After a confrontation with an unstable man at an intersection, a woman becomes the target of his rage. B-Movie psychological action-road-rage-thriller in which director Derrick Borte and screenwriter Carl Ellsworth seemingly rechannel the psyched out demons of Rutger Hauer from "The Hitcher" (1986), the troubled Michael Douglas in "Falling Down" (1993), and most notably, the unseen murderous truck driver in Steven Spielberg's "Duel" (1971), a totally illogical but nonetheless thrilling enough pot-boiler, and while it's not wholly fresh or original, its ambiguous beginnings and constantly built up tension, primarily thanks to Russell Crowe in good form, this high octane road romp is sure to keep the heart pounding and the finger nails shortened by films end.

Mean, lean and tight, Russell Crowe immerses himself in all the brooding emotions and brutal depictions he can muster from the Hollywood rulebook as the tormented, deranged and totally unhinged antagonist, and is aided with equal effect by Caren Pistorius and Gabriel Bateman as the targeted mother and son of his rage, but a special mention must go to the many behind the scenes for the consistently compelling driving and stunt work.

Sadistic, predictable, graphic, humourless, clichéd and in parts pointlessly violent, it may leave some squeamish, sickened or even bemused, but it is also a distressingly effective thriller with a few seat- clutching squirms and squeals along the way, so much so, it is sure to make you think twice about honking someone next time you are stuck behind a car at a traffic light.

FILM: NEVER LOOK AWAY (DVD): G e n r e : History/Drama/Romance.

Cast: Sebastian Koch, Paula Beer, Tom Schilling, Oliver Masucci.

Year: 2018/ MA15+/189 Minutes. Stars: **** Review: A young German artist has escaped East Germany with his newlywed wife to West Germany, but is he deeply haunted and tormented by his childhood and youth under the Nazis in WWII and the GDR-regime (German Democratic Republic), and unaware that his wife's father was the Nazi in WWII responsible for his young aunt's murder, whom he loved deeply.

Beautifully photographed by six time Oscar nominated and multiaward winning cinematographer Caleb Deschanel (The Right Stuff/ The Natural), and aided by striking costume design, production design and period detail throughout its three decade journey, this is a genuinely thrilling superbly controlled exploration through the eyes, heart and work of an artist, a clash between war, love, totalitarianism and art, that achieves what too few other movies do today, and one that will stay firmly in the head and stir the subconscious for long after it's over.

Rourke’s Reviews Hillbilly Elegy ■ (M). 117 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Based on the controversial novel

by J.D. Vance, this misguided, onenote adaptation wallows in generalisations and cliches, unwilling or unable to explore a community in more honest, thoughtful detail.

Moving between 1997 and 2011, we see the coming-of-age of J.D. (Owen Asztalos and Gabriel Basso during the respective time frames), who has to deal with his unreliable, drug-addicted mother Bev (an uncharacteristically overthe-top Amy Adams), and his ambivalent relationship with Grandma Mamaw (Glenn Close), Appalachians who moved from Kentucky to Ohio to try and find a better life.

In 2011, J.D. is trying to attain an internship with a prestigious law firm, but has to return home after Bev has overdosed on heroin, and returns to a situation where he feels like he is drowning in despair and hopelessness.

There is the perfect opportunity to explore a rural community in great detail, but screenwriter Vanessa Taylor (Divergent) instead paints everything in broad, simplistic strokes, stripping characters down to an almost cartoonish level.

Not helping is the sentimental direction by Ron Howard (A Beautiful Mind), who forever avoids confronting potentially dark material head on.

Sinking proceedings even more are the dull turns by Asztalos and Basso.

Close comes off best, but like the rest of the cast, can't quite overcome the stereotypical nature of the script.

Coming hot on the heels of Antonio Campos' far superior The Devil All The Time (which also has Haley Bennett in its cast), Hillbilly Elegy feels trite by comparison, glossing over problematic familial examination in favour of comfortable dramatics that never genuinely challenges the viewer.

The Christmas Chronicles 2 ■ (PG). 112 minutes. Now Streaming on Netflix.

Though burdened by formula and overlength, this sequel to the surprise 2018 hit does provides some charm, largely due to the casting of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Mr. and Mrs. Claus.

Set two years after the original, we see true believer Kate (Darby Camp) is now a teen, unable to deal with her mother's new relationship with Bob (Tyrese Gibson), who she

feels is undeservedly replacing her deceased father. Using this negative attitude is Belsnickel (Julian Dennison, Hunt For The Wilder People), a disgruntled elf who wants to take revenge on Santa (Kurt Russell) and Mrs Claus (Goldie Hawn).

With limited time on their side, Santa, Kate and company will need to defeat Belsnickel before he is able to destroy Christmas. The first film was a standard Christmas outing bolstered by Russell's genuinely sincere performance, and the same can be said for the sequel, which follows by-the-numbers plotting and character arcs.

Co-writer/director Chris Columbus needlessly protracts the simple story, starving it of much-needed spark (he even botches an energetic, Blues Brothers-style music number), so interest drifts way before the end credits roll.

Though their last star pairing was in the unfunny 1987 comedy Overboard, it is rather joyous to see Russell and Hawn together again onscreen, and the chemistry this time is genial and at-times adorable.

The Christmas Chronicles 2 may feel like 'product' much of the time, but when two much-loved veterans are front-and-centre, there is definite joy to be had, and that can't be bad in what has been a horrible year.

The Eight Hundred

■ (MA). 149 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

This gorgeously mounted war epic, impressively staged and executed, is let down by a lack of depth to the characters, shown as an antlike collective rather than individualistic, flesh-and-blood human beings.

The $80 million production, the first Chinese film to be completely shot with IMAX cameras, centres on the Battle Of Shanghai, where the 88th Division of the National RevolutionaryArmy fought the Imperial Japanese Army in the early days of the Second Sino-Japanese War. As a large-scale, highly visceral, technically brilliant exercise, The Eight Hundred, scores a bullseye, bringing a moment in history to vivid life.

One just wishes we got to know the soldiers who stood their ground better as individuals, rather than seeing them as merely a sacrificial cog in a much larger machine.

■ Established in the Hunter Valley in 2000, the Davis family's Carillion Wines owns vineyards in New South Wales' Hunter Valley and Orange and South Australia's Wrattonbully.

Carillion's Tallavera Grove vineyard was planted in the Hunter's Mount View region in 1994 and is home to their cellar door and boasts one of the best views across the valley.

"Our Carillion Origins wines are all single vineyard wines from the best parcels of fruit from each of our vineyards, made with the objective of expressing the region, variety and terroir," explained Carillion winemaker Andrew Ling.

The Carillion Origins Fenestella Shiraz was first released in 2010 and is named for the 350-millionyear-old bryozoan fossils found throughout the vineyard.

"This new 2018 vintage is made from components from across various blocks of this vineyard, ensuring we have a range of flavours and characters, adding to the depth and complexity of the final blend.

"A parcel of fruit was also used from the Tallawanta graft block; the grafts having been adopted in 2011 from heritage listed Tallawanta vineyard which was planted 100 years ago in 1920."

The Hunter Valley fruit was handpicked and cold soaked for 48 hours in two tonne open fermenters prior to wild fermentation.

World racing is on the move

■ The Global Alliance has launched its connection around the World to connect with the racehorse.

The Together for Racing International promotes education, community engagement, and working development.

Together for Racing International (TfRL) announced a global alliance to promote and progress education, community engagement, and career opportunities in the Thoroughbred industry.

They launched their website, together for racinginternational.com.

TRfL resulted from a 2019 education forum hosted by Godolphin at Newmarket, UK. This event gathered thoroughbred breeding, racing, and education professionals, from six countries, whom addressed challenges to inclusion, attracting newcomers, supporting education, and workforce enrichment.

Forum attendees collaborated on a global vision and strategy to grow and sustain the Thoroughbred industry.

The outcome focuses on three pillars for development: education, community engagement and workforce.

TfRL is a platform for connecting the world with the Thoroughbred.

The resources and inspirational content on the website will inform students, educators, parents, and industry members about available opportunities for learning and involvement.

It also serves as a networking medium for countries to collaborate and support the progression of emerging programs.

TfRL is chaired by Chris Grant, and developed through a network of global steering committee members from Australia, France, Great Britain, Ireland, Japan and the United States.

Grant was the Vice-Chairman of London's ground-breaking 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Legacy International Development Program, International Inspiration, and has moderated several editions of the Global Beyond Sport Forum.

TfRL's global steering committee members represent the following educational and workforce organisations: AFASEC(FR); France-Galop (FR); Godolphin (Globally); Horse Racing Ireland (IRE): Irish National Stud (IRE); Kentucky Equine Talent Pipeline Project (USA); North American RacingAcademy (USA); Racing Together (GB); The Racing Foundation (GB); and Thoroughbred Industry Careers (AUS).

The CEO of Racing Australia, Myles Foreman, said: "Racing Australia is working closely with the principal racing authorities and Industry via a national working group to support objectives of TfRL, and welcome the launch of the TfRL website".

TfRI Australian Committee representative, Thoroughbred Industry Careers, Lindy Maurice, said: "This website attests to the positive impact that the racing industry is having on individuals and communities in Australia and in other major jurisdictions.

“TfRL reinforces we're a part of a global industry, and we are looking forward to seeing what this alliance can achieve together".

“We are Stewards of the animal at its centre; and it is our mission, and truly a privilege, to support initiatives like TfRL, linking up internationally, to promote horse racing and breedingand the horse itself-to the world".

■ Good news all round with Racing Victoria continuing their long-standing association with Equestrian Victoria, by extending its Off The Track naming rights sponsorship next year.

The formal partnership provides RV an important opportunity to promote its Off The Track program to the equestrian community, and drive demand to retired gallopers as suitable horses for all equestrian disciplines.

A feature of the partnership is Racing Victoria's support of dedicated Off the Track categories and prizes for riders competing at EV major championships and regional events across Victoria.

Since the commencement of the Off The Track program in 2012, there have been over 15,000 collective former racehorse appearances at Victorian equestrian events.

This highlights the growing interest from equestrian riders in thoroughbreds as performance horses.

An important extension of the sponsorship beyond the shows and awards currently supported, is a new five-part series of educational clinics for Off The Track horse owners.

The clinics will take place at various locations across Victoria, and will be open to EV members and acknowledged retrainers.

RV's partnership with Equestrian Victoria is made possible by the Victorian Racing Industry's three-year, $25 million expanded and accelerated equine welfare action plan, which has a priority on the wellbeing of retired horses.

■ Racing returned to Ararat on Wednesday and Rockbank trainer Brian Kiesey is deserved of all the accolades for the night after winning the Home Of Bakeology Trotters Handicap over 2165 metres with 7Y0 Love You-Tip Your Hat Loui gelding Gentleman Sir when making his 78th race appearance.

Driven by regular reinsman John Justice, Gentleman Sir began safely from an equal 30 metre backmark to settle four back in the moving line after avoiding several gallopers, with Dream Over stepping straight to the front.

Commencing a forward move three wide in the final circuit, Gentleman Sir showed a blistering burst of speed to dash clear prior to the final bend and reached the wire by a huge 38.3 metre margin from Columbias Deejay (one/three at bell).

Driven by son James, Hot Breakfast (gate four) was trapped three wide for a full lap before crossing to race outside the poleline leader She Will Wantano at the halfway mark. Despite the tough trip, Hot Breakfast surged to the front on turning to score by 1.5 metres over Smile Mile along the sprint lane after trailing the weakening pacemaker, with Markleigh Caz (three back the markers) third a nose away after also using the sprint lane. The mile rate 2-00.8.

Double wraps

■ Terang trainer/driver Mattie Craven landed the Barry Davidson Electrical Pace over 2195 metres with home bred 3Y0 A Rocknroll DanceItz Nosurprisesthere filly Itz Long Tall Sally in a rate of 1-57.7.

Bred and raced by Tony and Pam Conignio, Itz Long Tall Sally went forward from gate six to park outside the leader Rosarito Miss (gate four). Taking over mid-race, Itz Long Tall Sally was too strong for her rivals, reaching the wire 1.1 metres in advance of Premonition (one/two), with Valiente coming from the tail to finish third 5.1 metres away.

Craven was to make it a double when Sportswriter-Whodyou Wantmetobe filly Just Be Yourself blitzed her opposition in the Ararat Harness Racing Committee Pace over 1790 metres.

Leading out from the pole, Whoudyou Wantmetobe was always racing under double wraps before dashing away on the home turn to prevail by 24 metres from Metro Man (one/three) and Tuesdays Edition who was 2.6 metres back in third place. The mile rate 1-58.1.

Two meetings

and Mildura at night. At Kilmore, Bet Bet trainer Ray Cross has been having a great run of late and landed the Beraldo 3Y0 Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres with Imperial Count-Kumbya filly Countess Chiron.

With Jason Ainsworth in the sulky, Countess Chiron starting from gate three on the second row possied three back in the moving line with Megeve beginning with a wing on every foot to lead from outside the front line.

Latching to the back of Pinevale Victoria for a ride home in the last lap, Countess Chiron was angled down to the sprint lane on turning and finished best to nab a game Pinevale Victoria in the shadows of the post to score by 2 metres, with Megeve third a nose back in a mile rate of 2-05.6.

Allowed to amble around at his leisure from gate four, Cobargo Grin kept giving in the straight to prevail by 1.1 metres in a rate of 2-02.8 from Runsafarirun which raced exposed. Ears Ponder (one/one) was third after switching to the sprint lane on turning.

■ Euroa trainer/driver Cameron Maggs was successful with first starter Super Service in the TAB Long May We Play 2Y0 Maiden Pace over 2180 metres.

A Majestic Son-Sunday Service gelding, Super Service after beginning swiftly from gate five was trapped uncovered as the favourite Imasocial Butterfly led from gate four for Riddell's Chris Lang. Restrained to be four back along the markers for a short breather, Super Service was again taken to face the open racing for the bell, but proved too strong at the finish for the leader, scoring a most impressive 10.6 metre margin over Imasocial Butterfly in a mile rate of 2-05.4. Silent Reverie (six back the markers one/one at bell) was third 12.1 metres away after using the sprint lane on straightening.

■ At Mildura, Merbein trainer/driver Luke Watson's in-form 4Y0 Caulonia Terror, a gelded son of Western Terror and Caulonia Babe brought up two wins in succession by taking an exciting 1790 metre Quality Hotel Mildura Grand Pace in a brilliant 1-55.4.

Taken back to be four back the markers from gate four, Caulonia Terror followed local hero Murranji Track ahead of him forward at the bell when he was taken into the running line by Luke's wife Kathy.

Although very wide on the final bend, Caulonia Terror sprouted wings in the straight to prevail by 1.1 metres over Murranji Track, with the pacemaker Maestro Bellini third 6.5 metres away in third place, a nose ahead of Im Sir Blake that gave the leader no peace throughout.

■ Two meetings were held on Friday with Maryborough starting just after 11am due to anticipated very hot conditions and Geelong in the evening.

by Hamilton's Jackie Barker received a charmed passage trailing Orlandos Gift which began very fast from outside the front line, before easing wide on turning to account for Lucky Serina along the sprint lane after following her all the way by a half neck, with Orlandos Gift third 4.3 metres back, while Tell Nobody (Jordan Leedham) used the sprint lane after trailing the leader Monsieur Delacour to blouse him by 1.8 metres in 1-57.8. Receiving the run of the race, Iamawingate used the sprint lane to nab the leader in the last couple of strides to score by a half neck in a rate of 1-58.6. Vetness fought on strongly to be third 4.5 metres away.

■ At Geelong, Grenville's Moss family Greg, Debra, Kristy and Donna would have been relieved when their 8Y0 Angus Hall-Rangitawa gelding Well Deserved returned to the winners list after an absence of fifty three months when successful in the 93.9 Bay FM Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres.

Trained by Greg for daughter Kristy, Well Deserved driven by Debra began fast to lead from gate five before surrendering to Fling It Rainbow which circled the field with a swift burst of speed prior to the bell.

Angling away from the markers on the final bend, Well Deserved finished his race off well to register a 1.8 metre margin over Fling It Rainbow and Louieville Lass (four back the markers). The mile rate 2-03.6. Even though he is an eight year old, Well Deserved has only fronted the starter on 44 occasions.

Long way off

■ Bannockburn co-trainers Emmett and Richard Brosnan's 5Y0 Majestic Son-Foreign Interest gelding Mah Mukker chalked up his 7th victory in 45 outings when taking the Yabby Dam Racing Trotters Handicap over 2570 metres in a mile rate of 2-04.8.

Taking a concession for Ryan Duffy, Mah Mukker coming from a 20 metre equal backmark settled a long way off the leader Lola Devereaux (gate two).

Going forward with a three wide double trail on the back of both Trouble Giero and Caabello at the bell, Mah Mukker after angling very wide on the home turn, finished with a wet sail to score by 2.4 metres from Leanne Leanne along the sprint lane off the back of the leader in a 204.8 mile rate.
