■ PRIME MINISTER Scott Morrison has approved Mickleham as the site for Victoria’s new quarantine hub.

Mr Morrison confirmed the site in a letter last Thursday to then-Acting Premier James Merlino.

The Mickleham site has been chosen over an alternative location at Avalon. Hume City Council says it has yet to be involved in discussions.

Health Minister Martin Foley said work on the centre should have started 12 months ago.

“We welcome the Commonwealth’s late but welc omed arrival at this position. The fact that it is, really, 12 months late is a disappointment.

“If thePrime Minister is up to delivering this before Christmas ... then he has a willing partner in Victoria to achieve that.”

Mr Foley said a village-like hub would be infinetly more safe than hotel quarantine.

The Federal Government will cover the construction cost of the facility.

Regional Round-Up

Thomastown facelift ■ High Street Thomastown has had a makeover. The shopping strip has had safer pedestrian crossings installed, new footpaths, and lush new trees planted. The paving and drainage has also been upgraded, along with new seats and bike racks at key sections of the precinct.

Next phase of the upgrade will include the construction of a new social space at the war memorial site opposite Thomastown Primary School.

This project is delivered by the City of Whittlesea in partnership with the State Government.

Footpath trading

■ Banyule Council this week considered an extension for the seven temporary Outdoor Dining Parklets to June 30, 2022.

A recommendation went to Councillors to waive the permit fees (approximately $36,050) for footpath trading for the 2021-22 financial year.

Banyule Council received a total of $650,000 in grant funding which was used to facilitate extended outdoor dining on footpaths, waive Temporary Outdoor Dining Permit fees and invest in infrastructure to support businesses transition to temporary outdoor dining, including the installation of seven parklets in key activity strips in Banyule.

A high percentage of residents (73 per cent ) had personally vis-

ited one or more of the parklets.

It was found that residents and visitors used the parklets because; ■ they wanted to support local businesses during COVID-19; ■ it was a nice day/night to be outdoors; and ■ the parklet was convenient/ close to home.

Craigieburn attack

■ “The nephew of slain underworld boss Nabil Maghnie walked into a woman’s Craigieburn home and grabbed her around the neck before attacking her husband and son,” reports the Herald Sun. “Anthony Younan, 33, was sentenced to a 15-month Community Corrections Order with 75 hours’ community work before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, having pleaded guilty to three charges of unlawful assault,” reported Serena Seyfort.

“The court heard the trained boxer was acting as a debt collector when he attacked three family members at their home just before 2pm on June 6, 2020.

“Younan, who did not know his victims, arrived at their property in an Uber and pushed past the 59year-old husband, who was washing his car in the driveway.

“The victims couldn’t understand Younan, who was drunk and on drugs, and phoned their son to come and help.”

■ Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews returned from sick leave with a hefty pay packet increase of $10,000 – bringing his annual salary to more than $452,000.

Jim Crow Creek

■ Liberal heavy-hitter Louise Staley last week presented a petition of 508 signatures to State Parliament about the creek has been known as ‘Jim Crow Creek’ since the early days of the area.

“It is an important land mark, a part of the natural environment and the history of the Hepburn and M tAlexander Shires and the State of Victoria.

“Many past and present residents of the Hepburn/Mt. Alexander Shires area are concerned about the proposals under consideration to change the name of Jim Crow Creek.”

Business support

■ Sandringham MLA Brad Rowswell last week spoke in State Parliament about small business support.

“I rise to speak on behalf of a local business owner, a business owner that close to three weeks ago was promised support by the Andrews Labor Government who effectively closed down his business as part of their lockdown.

“He, Andrew of Beaumaris Books in the Concourse in Beaumaris, submitted an application for the government’s business costs assistance program round 2 on June 3.

“The Acting Premier on that day said at his news conference that funds would start flowing by the end of the week, that being Friday, June 4.

“Today, 19 days later, Andrew from Beaumaris Books in the Concourse has received an email saying that his application is being assessed.

“There is no information on an expected time frame and, in Andrew’s words, he says, ‘I feel sick’—and this is not good enough. He is about to face a big cash flow issue at the end of the month as the end of the month arrives, and the Acting Premier implied that the funds would be made available quickly.

“I am aware of at least one other small business owner who as of yesterday has not received information regarding his application either.

“The Andrews Labor Government have promised support for these small businesses, many of which are on their knees. They need to deliver it and they need to deliver it now.”

Well done Sandra ■ Sandra MacNeil’s receipt of a gold service award from Basketball Victoria, recognising her 35 years of dedication to community basketball, has been recognised in State Parliament.

Vicki Ward, Eltham MLA, said: “Sandra has been steadfastly determined and dedicated in supporting her local community, particularly when it comes to basketball.

“Her recognition of the importance of community connections, particularly in the new housing area, drove Sandra to become president of the Greenhills Basketball Club for 11 years and to help it be a place where kids are supported and family is embraced.

“Her role extended to scoring senior championships and state-level games and working as a special projects officer with the Diamond Valley Basketball Association in the 1990s.

“Recently Sandra showed me a letter she had written about an upgrade to the Diamond Valley Sports and Fitness Centre to the Shire of Diamond Valley in 1993. While it may have taken 27 years, thanks to this government works began last year on an upgrade very close to the one Sandra suggested so many years ago,” Ms Ward said.

Sunbury MLA Josh Bull last week said in State Parliament that he had been able to announce $2.5 million for Salesian College for the Rupertswood sports pavilion.

New Victoria University analysis reveals some of the organisational barriers that prevent or deter women from culturally diverse backgrounds to stay on as leaders in sport.

Some 221 women, representing 110 cultural and ethnic groups took part in a survey, with the findings ultimately informing a new resource for sporting organisations around the country. The research team, led by Professor Clare Hanlon, Susan Alberti Women in Sport Chair, Institute for Health and Sport believes this is the first analysis of its kind in Australia featuring input by women who currently lead in sport, aspire to move into sport to lead and have no interest to lead in sport.

Hunt after home invasion ■ Detectives are hoping to identify a male following a home invasion in Point Cook.

An unknown male attended a Annandale Mews residential address about 12.50pm on Tuesday, January 12.

The male repeatedly knocked on the front door and rang the doorbell before walking away.

Shortly after, two other males allegedly forced entry through the front door.

The pair stole various personal items before all three males fled the scene in a Renault hatchback.

Later that day, Police seized the vehicle and arrested two men in Glenroy who were allegedly in possession of weapons and stolen property.

The men, aged 21 from Roxburgh Park, and 20 from Mill Park, were charged with home invasion (steal) offensive weapon, theft, commit indictable offence whilst on bail and other offences related to other alleged offending.

Both were remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 17.

Following an extensive investigation, detectives have released an image of a male who they believe can assist with their enquiries.

The male is believed to be aged in his late teens, between 170-180cm tall, thin build with dark-coloured hair.

Detectives from the Moreland Crime Investigation Unit are hoping to identify a man following a home invasion in Glenroy earlier this year. It is believed two unknown males attended a Glenroy Rd residential address about 4.30am on Monday, April 26. Investigators have been told the two men broke into the property and threatened the female occupant with a knife, demanding cash before ransacking the premises and fleeing. They were last seen driving off in a silver Holden Astra. The offenders are perceived to be Middle Eastern in appearance with stocky builds.

■ A major funding boost from the Victorian Government will spark urban renewal and innovative research activity in Melbourne’s north.

Gayle Tierney, Minister for Training and Skills, announced the Government’s $44.6 million investment in the CBD North Precinct Activation Project led by RMIT University.

The area will be transformed into a large open space for the public with a ‘green spine’ linking the CBD, Carlton, Parkville and the Queen Victoria Market – building on existing work at the precinct undertaken by the Government and RMIT. The Activation Project includes a raft of individual research and capital works with a unique focus on community-based renewal, including: ■ A Multifaith and Wellbeing Centre to better serve the needs of RMIT’s diverse community ■ An Asia Trade and Innovation Hub designed to support local businesses operating in the Asia-Pacific ■ A Social Innovation Hub to foster collaborative and industry-focused research on current social and economic challenges, including gender equality, cultural diversity, and crime prevention ■ PlaceLab Research Centres.

Tulla sex assault probe ■ Fawkner Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are investigating a historical sexual assault at a primary school in Tullamarine in the 1970s.

Police have been told male students from the Tullamarine Primary School were sexually assaulted by an adult male teacher during lunch and or recess breaks in 1978.

A 67-year-old man from regional Victoria has been interviewed by SOCIT detectives and it is expected he will be charged on summons.

Investigators are appealing for any 1978 past students of the Broadmeadows Road primary school who may have experienced any inappropriate behaviour to come forward in the hope it will further assist their investigation.

RMIT leads North project ● Sarah Connolly, Tarneit MLA “One of the biggest needs for those in the Tarneit community is to access our courts for family law matters, especially for instances of family violence,” said Sarah Connolly, Tarneit MLA, last week. “As the Attorney-General knows, our government has an impressive track record when it comes to implementing every single recommendation of the Royal Commission into Family Violence. One of these recommendations was the expansion of our family court system. That is why the recent announcement that our government would fund $78 million to establish a specialist family court at the Magistrates’ Court in Sunshine was welcome news for my community. In fact it builds upon the announcement our government made last year to build brand new law courts in Werribee, which will also include a specialist court.”

Hume City Council says that it is dismayed that Bulla has been selected as the location to store contaminated spoil from the West Gate Tunnel Project. Mayor Cr Joseph Haweil said the Council had no advance notice of the decision to select the Hi Quality site in Sunbury Road. ■ Major improvements for Bon Thomas Reserve in Deer Park will begin later this year after the State Government announced $1.084 million for upgrades at the reserve.

Brimbank Council welcomed the State Budget funding towards the $1.586 million project – which will include a new asphalt car park, multi-purpose cricket nets, irrigation upgrade for the oval, and a new path network for the reserve. Brimbank Council will fund the remaining $502,000 project cost.

Newport: teen spat on ■ Police are investigating an incident on a train where a teenager was spat on whilst on a city bound train.

Investigators have been told a 14-year-old girl and her friend boarded the train at Newport Railway Station at 7.23am on May 19.

An unknown man boarded the train at Footscray and after standing at the door and staring at the girls, he approached the pair, verbally abused them and then spat at the victim.

The teenager and her friend quickly moved carriages to avoid any further confrontation.

The man is described as 180cm tall, unshaven with short brown hair and was wearing a fluorescent green jumper.

Investigators have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist police with their enquiries.

Boost for Trug.

■ Tarneit MLA Sarah Connolly last week told State Parliament: “It was absolutely fantastic to be able to announce last week that our government is actively looking at acquiring land in Elements estate in Trug to build one of the two campuses for Truganina North Secondary School.”

Baby killed at Altona ■ Altona Highway Patrol officers are investigating after a boy was fatally struck by a car in Altona on Tuesday morning last week (June 22).

Emergency services were called to McAlpine Court about 9.15am.

It is believed the 19-monthold boy was riding a scooter along the footpath when he was struck by a slow-moving vehicle pulling out of a driveway.

The boy was taken to hospital where he sadly later died.

The driver of the vehicle, a 60-year-old Altona man, stopped and assisted police at the scene.

Police, who are preparing a report for the Coroner, would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or who has dash cam footage, and request they contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report via www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

“Like most Victorians, I hate sending stuff to landfill, so it was wonderful to visit the Vinnies Ascot Vale op shop last week and see some of the great things that they are doing to help us cut down our waste.

“They are really impressive. As well as selling second-hand clothes, furniture, books and other items and giving them a second life, they also doing some really innovative things.

“For example, they are selling new mattresses that have been remade from parts of old mattresses, firewood made by compressing waste sawdust and end-of-the-line clothes and shoes that would have gone to waste and testing and tagging appliances like lamps, heaters, TVs and coffee makers that were headed for e-waste but can now be resold.”

Off-duty PSO blows .066

■ An off-duty Protective Services Officer has been detected allegedly drink driving in Melbourne west. The 22-year-old male PSO, from Transit and Public Safety Command, was intercepted on William St just after 3am on June 19. He tested positive to a preliminary breath test before undergoing an evidentiary test, where he returned an alleged reading of .066.

The PSO lost his licence for six months and has been issued with a $496 infringement notice for drink driving.

Lookout for Billy Hudd ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Billy Hudd.

The 27-year-old is wanted on warrant for failing to appear at court to face theft and drug related charges.

Hudd is described as 175cm tall, with a medium build, light coloured hair and blue eyes.

He is known to frequent the Hume area.

Investigators have released an image of Hudd in the hope someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

■ Footscray MLA Katie Hall last week told State Parliament: “I would like to join the member for Altona in condemning the Federal Government in the strongest terms for their watering down of responsible lending laws—completely irresponsible—where our community legal service in the last year has prevented 18 home repossessions.”

■ Ms Sandell was keen to continue her praise for Vinnies: “Now, I was keen to visit Vinnies because the Greens really care about waste. We hate seeing it in the ocean, we hate seeing our landfills filling up and we love smart solutions that turn waste into something new.

“We want to get more people not just recycling but actually repairing and re-using old things. And one of the barriers that op shops like Vinnies face is the cost of the testand-tag machines that they use to check electrical appliances are safe.

“They cost over $1000, and their volunteers need to be trained to use them, which also costs.

“I met a couple of wonderful volunteers, Toni and Tracey, who had already been through the training and were doing an amazing job keeping appliances out of landfill.

Imagine if the government could fund programs to re-use and repair electrical goods right across the state,” Ms Sandell said.

■ A young woman from Sunshine West was a finalist in the 2021 Young Archies, Footscray MLA Katie Hall told State Parliament last week.

“Charliese Allen is 16 years old and her portrait of her mother, titled Momasito, is currently on display amongst the most talented young portrait painters in Australia,” Ms Hall said.

“I thought Charliese’s description of her painting was beautiful. She wrote: This portrait portrays and is dedicated to my mum.

She is the strongest person I have ever met, and whenever I feel like I have no one else to turn to, or I feel lost, I know I can go to her.

“She has a heart of gold and stays strong even through the toughest of times, and I wanted to portray that here - her vulnerable and caring presence side by side with her iron will.

“Charliese’s tribute to her mum is absolutely spectacular, and I felt so proud when I read the letter and saw this incredibly moving work. by Anna Ruth Laird. A ‘whodunit’ with a twist and two detectives have their work cut out in this murder mystery. Is it the fact they missed a clue? Is it the fact they don’t have a clue? Everyone is a suspect … including the catfish.

The laundromat is a sanctuary, an escape from the outside world, a welcomed mundane. It’s a place to disconnect from daily life when focusing on the hum of the wash and the tumble of the dry. Until a stranger enters that safe haven … and begins to ask questions … and takes it upon themselves to break the ‘cycle’.

■ Anna by Lamplight, written by Alison Knight, directed by Jane Carter. Set in Berlin, November 1938, two days after Kristallnacht. A dangerous time to be a Jew. But who presents the greater danger to Anna: the Nazis or her abusive husband Max? And who is the stranger in black, lurking under the lamplight?

A life member of Peridot Theatre, playwright Alison Knight has served on the Board of Management for 12 years, including President for six of those years, and stepped down from this role at the company's Annual General Meeting last month to devote more time to her writing and other projects.

The Door In Question ■ Shortcut Creative presents a new psychological cross-reality adventure - The Door in Question - a multi-sensory virtual reality immersive theatre production from August 4 - 8 at the MC Showroom, Prahran.

Audience members will be placed at the centre of an illusory world that calls into question the very nature of their own perception.They will put on a Virtual-Reality headset and talk to AI to enter the experience.

The narrative of this experience aims to destigmatise the often taboo subject of living with mental illness.

Education via the experience is becoming part of the VR community and The Door In Question is using VR for change.

The show was developed in conjunction with UNSW, RMIT, Australian Council of the Arts, Creative Victoria, City of Melbourne and City of Stonnington, and is about dismantling and understanding mental illness through exciting new cross reality technologies.

The show is limited as only four people can join the narrative at one time.

● Melanie Hillman ■ Melbourne chamber music group The Parlour has a fascinating publicity line - if you really want to know what a composer was like, ask his landlord, his housekeeper or his ex-wife.

In the usual format of a hybrid performance of song, recital and semi-staged play, The Parlour is staging Fantastique! The Life and Loves of Hector Berlioz, with actor Melanie Hillman portraying Berlioz's opera singer second wife, Marie Recio.

As The Parlour takes you through Berlioz's life, as seen by Marie, singers mezzo-soprano Karen van Spall and baritone Adam Miller will perform songs by Berlioz, accompanied at the piano by Coady Green.

The show is happening at forty-five downstairs, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, on Tuesday July 13 and Wednesday July 14 at 7.30 pm. There is a live streamed performance on July 14 - Bastille Day. It's a wealth of classical performances all week at forty-five downstairs.

Thursday and Friday, July 15-16 features Duo Ecclettico, pianist Coady Green and saxophonist Justin Kenealy with a program of contemporary Australian composers. The duo will be performing Jane Hammond's Songs from The Box and Swamp, and Ross Edwards's Full Moon Dances.

To conclude this mini-festival, on Saturday- Sunday, July, 17-18, there will be a special concert entitled Two Pianos, Eight Hands, featuring pianists Tristan Lee, Gina Gataveckaite, Christopher Smith and Coady Green, in a virtuosic program for four pianists on two grand pianos.

The works to be performed include those

by Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, SaintSaëns and a Tchaikovsky fourth symphony piano transcription.

Three Summers

■ A new arrival in Melbourne, the drama/comedy movie Three Summers transports cinemagoers to tropical Brazil, using English subtitles.

Co-written by Iana Cossoy Paro and Sandra Kogut, Three Summers takes place over three contrasting Christmases between 2015 and 2017.

Disparity between Brazilian social classes is evident as we share the lives of optimistic, resourceful housekeeper Madá (Regina Casé) and staff when serving and negotiating with their wealthy employers in a luxurious condominium.

Corruption and Brazil's real-life Operation Car Wash, resulting in hundreds of arrests in 2014, also feature. Police arrive with a search warrant, and Madá's rich employers Edgar (Otávio Müller) and Marta (Gisele Fróes) disappear, implicated in a corruption and money laundering scandal.

This upperclass downfall leaves Madá and her fellow staff without wages, but in a charming twist, Kogut and Paro empower these underdog characters with strength and determined resourcefulness to emerge as the winners.

Deft direction by Sandra Kogut sustains visual interest, but sudden cuts between scenes seem disjointed and the pace drags at times.

References throughout the movie to modernday technology entrenches Three Summers as a

movie for its time.

Both social classes use mobile phones and Skype, the internet, security cameras, videos, emails, voice mail, Instagram and Facebook are all included.

Even Edgar's elderly father Lira (Rogerio Froés) living in the guest room, talks of editing photographs in a modern camera.

A special treat in this movie is the skilled, standout performance from Brazilian actor Regina Casé as irrepressible Madá, who eventually reveals the heartbreaking story behind her joyful persona.

Although not recognising comedic aspects of this drama/comedy, I found the narrative, colourful characters and glimpses of life in contemporary Brazil offer an enlightening experience.

Three Summers pays tribute to the strength and resilience of those deemed to be lower class, and opens a window into the lavish lifestyles of upper class Brazilians.

The movie also proves that regardless of class, life can change dramatically when things go wrong.

What’s On Them ■ Arts Centre Melbourne in partnership with Critical Stages Touring present Them by Samah Sabawi and directed by Bagryana Popov in the Fairfax Studio from July 28 31.

Based on real life stories of people displaced by conflict, Them follows one young family as they face the decision whether to flee their war-torn city.

Omar, Leila and their young child are counting down the days. Their friends enjoy fantasies of escape and the arrival of Omar’s sister brings a real chance to get out – but at what cost?

Developed in consultation with people living in conflict zones and displaced by war, the play was first supported by Melbourne Theatre Company before enjoying a sell-out extended season at La Mama Theatre.

“Them is a tragicomedy about love, honour and sacrifice in times of violence and war. It follows the lives of five young people and explores the impossible decisions they have to make in the days before a refugee boat sails from their shores to Europe,” says Samah Sabawi.

“I wrote the first draft for this play in a hotel room in Finland 2015. At the time, there were protests in the streets of Helsinki by members of the far right - who took the opportunity of marking Finland’s national day to demand tighter immigration measures against what they viewed as the wave of invasion of asylum seekers into their country.”

Seeking refuge and coming to terms with the effects of displacement is a subject deeply relavent to Sabawi as the award-winning Palestinian playwright and her family were exiled in the aftermath of the Six Day War in 1967.

Her experience connects her with the rest of the cast who hail from a range of countries that have been affected by political turmoil.

The ensemble features Osamah Sami, Taj Aldeeb, Mehran Tajbakhsh, Claudia Greenstone, Nahed Elrayes and Adeeb Razzouk.

“I sat down and started imagining what life would have been like for the asylum seekers before they boarded the boats.

“I was already familiar with the impact of war on ordinary people, especially on women and children in Palestine and in Syria, but when I started writing, my characters refused to be bound to a specific region," said Sabawi.

Long way out ■ Mitchell Park (Ballarat) trainer Kelvin Barker landed the Pridgeon Automotive Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres with ex-Kiwi and Queenslander You Really Got Me in a mile rate of 2-01.2. A 5Y0 Love You-Rondo gelding, You Really Got Me having his third start for the stable and third since December last year was trapped four wide from outside the front line before going forward with Chris Alford in the sulky to assume control from Do Ya Wanna Donna after travelling a short distance.

Allowed to run, You Really Got Me had his rivals off the bit and chasing a long way out, scoring easily by 7.9 metres from Do Ya Wanna Donna which stuck on well. Ikara (four back the markers) used the sprint lane for third a half head away.

Trapped four wide ■ Camperdown part-owner/trainer Bruce McSween and the McSween family were victorious with smart GrinfromeartoearPrimanproper 4Y0 gelding Gotta Smudge in the Bruce The Plumber Pace over 2100 metres.

Driven by Xavier O’Connor, Gotta Smudge after being trapped four wide from gate five went forward to arrest the lead away from polemarker Atego Shades and once at the head of affairs treated his rivals with contempt, greeting the judge by 10.3 metres in advance of Rebeccas Art along the sprint lane from three back the markers returning a mile rate of 1-57.5.

Birchip trained Stylish Gem also used the sprint lane from four back to finish third 4.7 metres away.

Wide on turning ■ The 2100 metre Alabar Vicbred Platinum Maiden Pace saw Bendigo’s Rodney Lakey and partners successful aboard 4Y0 Betterthan-cheddar-All Mystique gelding Jong Ang who was having his first start for the Lakey stable.

Restrained to the tail of the field from gate six as Bertls Grin led from gate three, Jong Ang was able to latch to the back of Caesarion ahead of him racing for the bell for a great ride home.

Taken very wide on turning, Jong Ang rattled home to prevail by a head in a tricky finish from Beryls Grin which looked the winner all the way up the running, with Caesarion a meritorious third 1.2 metres away after covering so much extra ground in the final circuit. The mile rate 2-01.3.

10-event card ■ Central Victorian racing continued on Tuesday with Bendigo holding a 10-event card.

■ Cardigan based Allan McDonough attached to the Stewart/Tonkin stable landed the J & A Mazzetti Painting Pace over 1650 metres with ultra-consistent Western Terror-Suzy Albert filly Bonnie Belle.

Trained and driven by Allan, Bonnie Belle after going forward from gate four to race exposed for the entire trip outside the speedy last start winner Shania Tee, proved much to strong and classy for her rivals.

■ Shelbourne trainer Kate Hargreaves snared the Gold Central Victoria Pace over 1650 metres with former West Australian 5Y0 Western Terror-Elleker Rose mare Elleker Hanover .

A winner of four races prior, the previous victory had been at Bunbury in November last year, Elleker Hanover driven by Alex Ashwood who holds a share enjoyed a cosy passage from the pole trailing the leader Happyaslarry next door and when taken away from the inside approaching the final bend, raced away on turning to record a 10.4 metre margin in a rate of 1-58.3 over Happyaslarry which fought on well. Good performance ■ At Kilmore on Thursday, local reinsman Aussie Mifsud was successful aboard the Brent Lilley (Bolinda) trained 4Y0 Love You-Focus On Me entire Kyvalley Surfrider, taking the Hanson Cleaning Services Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres.

In what was a good performance Kyvalley Surfrider (gate two) ran home strongly three wide from three back in the moving line last lap to be outside the leader Roi Du Soliel (gate four) on the home turn and finished best to prevail by an easy 7.1 metre margin over the pacemaker who was first up since last December, with Bacardi Bindy (three back the markers last lap) getting her second wind on straightening to finish third 3.4 metres back.

■ Kommotion was a fast-paced teenage Top 40 pop show that started back in August 1964 hosted by 3UZ disc jockey Ken Sparkes.

The cast included Ian 'Molly' Meldrum, Chantal Cantouri, Grant Rule, Tony Healey, Denise Drysdale, David Bland, Alex Rappel, Jillian Fitzgerald and many more.

It was the forerunner to Uptight hosted by Ross D. Wyllie and Happening 70, all on ATV-0 out at Nunawading.

Less likely to get virus ■ Vegetarians are missing out on more than just meat and it's a good thing. Researchers have revealed a link between diet and COVID-19 which showed plant-based eaters were 73 per cent less likely to come down with the virus compared to those who include animals in their diet.

Meanwhile, pescatarians, whose primary protein source is fish, were at a 59 per cent lower risk.

The new study, published in The BMJ Nutrition, Prevention and Health, based these findings on a self-reported questionnaire submitted by a total of 2884 individuals, all healthcare workers, from six European countries, 568 of which had had confirmed cases of the coronavirus during the previous year.

Among those cases, 138 said they suffered moderate to severe symptoms, while the remaining 430 experienced mild effects of the respiratory illness.

■ Ever embarrassingly come across a colleague or, gulp, an ex on Tinder and think to yourself while shaking your head: "Did that really just happen?"

This week, the popular dating app is fixing that. Tinder is introducing a new feature called Block Contacts that will allow users to avoid awkward encounters with exes, cousins, bosses or just about anyone they would rather not see or be seen by.

The new feature will allow users to block any or all of their phone contacts within the app.

"We may not be able to save you from awkward run-ins at the coffee shop, but we are giving you more control over your experience on Tinder," said Bernadette Morgan, the company's group product manager for trust and safety.

"We're rolling out Block Contacts as an additional resource, empowering members with peace of mind by helping create a worry-free space for them to spark new connections.”

Passengers too fat

■ Passengers keep getting bigger. Now airlines must account more accurately for that. The Federal Aviation Administration is requiring updates to passenger and baggage weight estimates that airlines use to keep each flight within airplane safety limits.

Each US airline had to submit a plan by June 12 explaining which average weights for passengers and baggage they'll use, down to phones and clothing, and how they estimated those weights.

The FAA must approve each airline's plan. Airline officials say the weight estimates used for passengers and baggage are going up between 5 per cent and 10 per cent. That will affect some flights, possibly requiring that more passengers get bumped or more baggage left behind. Impact is likelier on unusually hot days and in cities higher above sea level, when the weight an airplane can safely carry is reduced because wings won't generate as much lift. Flights into stiff headwinds that require more fuel also may face more weight issues.

■ Over the past 18 months, 29 prisoners have escaped from federal lockups across the US. and nearly half still have not been caught. At some of the institutions, doors are left unlocked, security cameras are broken and officials sometimes don't notice an inmate is missing for hours. At one Texas lockup, security is so lax that local law enforcement officials privately joke about its seemingly "open-door policy." Prisoners have broken out at lockups in nearly every region of the country. Twelve of the inmates who escaped in 2020 from prisons in Florida, California, Louisiana, Texas, and Colorado remain at large. Two others who escaped since January this year have also not yet been caught. Their crimes include racketeering, wire fraud, bank robbery, possession of methamphetamine, and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine and other drugs.

■ Dissident members of the original 10 Black Lives Matter chapters are demanding more accountability and transparency from the BLM Global Network in the wake of revelations about co-founder Patrisse Cullors' lavish spending.

Cullors announced she would resign from her post as executive director of the organisation in late May, amid controversy over the group's finances. She's been in the spotlight for lavish spending on real estate., including a $1.4 million LA home she encircled with a $35,000 electric fence. BLM10Plus, comprised of the original 10 Black Lives Matter chapters and some of BLM's newer chapters, repeated calls Friday for the BLM Global Network's leadership, to open the books about the structure of the sprawling organisation.

In a statement, it said the public should know about how many chapters there are, how the various legal entities under the Global Network are related to each other, the salaries of staff members and the founders, deals with contractors and more. "The little we do know, has come from persistent requests for transparency over the years," said the statement, which is titled, "Tell No Lies." It described tangled negotiations involving where official chapters were located and which ones got funding.

Drinking too much ■ Americans tend to drink in more dysfunctional ways than people in other societies, only to become judgmental about nearly any drinking at all.

Again, and again, an era of overindulgence begets an era of renunciation: Binge, abstain. Binge, abstain. Right now, we are lurching into another of our periodic crises over drinking, and both tendencies are on display at once.

Since the turn of the millennium, alcohol consumption has risen steadily, in a reversal of its long decline throughout the 1980s and 90s. Before the pandemic, some aspects of this shift seemed sort of fun, as long as you didn't think about them too hard.

In the 20th century, you might have been able to buy wine at the supermarket, but you couldn't drink it in the supermarket. Now some grocery stores have wine bars, beer on tap, signs inviting you to "shop 'n' sip," and carts with cup holders.

Even before COVID-19 arrived on our shores, the consequences of all this were catching up with us. From 1999 to 2017, the number of alcohol-related deaths in the US. doubled, to more than 70,000 a year, making alcohol one of the leading drivers of the decline in American life expectancy.

These numbers are likely to get worse: During the pandemic, frequency of drinking rose, as did sales of hard liquor.

By this February, nearly a quarter of Americans said they'd drunk more over the past year as a means of coping with stress. Explaining these trends is hard; they defy so many recent expectations. Not long ago, Millennials were touted as the driest generation they didn't drink much as teenagers, they were "sober curious," they were so admirably focused on being well and yet here they are day-drinking White Claw and dying of cirrhosis at record rates.

Nor does any of this appear to be an inevitable response to 21st-century life: Other countries with deeply entrenched drinking problems, among them Britain and Russia, have seen alcohol use drop in recent years.

Magazine ■ Ethel Merman made her debut on Broadway in the stage musical Girl Crazy in 1930 at the age of 22.

She never had a singing lesson in her life, never had a major hit song and although Ethel made several films, she was not regarded as a major film star – so why was Ethel Merman so popular?

I guess it was because she had star quality and was a showbusiness ‘legend’ in every sense of the word.

Ethel Agnes Zimmermann was born in Astoria, Queens in New York City in 1908. After graduating from High School, Ethel worked as a stenographer and then started singing in New York nightclubs. In 1924 she changed her name to Ethel Merman.

At this time she met Jimmy Durante and they became lifelong friends. During a season at The Palace in 1930 Ethel was invited to audition for the role of Kate Fothergill in the new George and Ira Gershwin musical Girl Crazy.

She got the role and this was a turning point in her career. Ethel got standing ovations when she sang the song I Got Rhythm holding a high C note for 16 bars.

Ethel Merman was signed to a film contract with Warner Brothers Studios and her first onscreen appearance was in Follow The Leader playing opposite Ed Wynn and Ginger Rogers.

In 1946 she played Annie Oakley in the stage musical Annie Get Your Gun which ran for 1147 performances at The Imperial Theatre on Broadway.

Ethel was not cast in the film version and when Judy Garland dropped out due to illness Betty Hutton was cast in the role of Annie Oakley. In 1950 Ethel played the lead role in Call Me Madam on Broadway and won the Tony award for her performance.

This time she was cast in the film version playing opposite Donald O’Connor, Vera Allen and George Sanders. In 1954 she starred in one of my favourite films There’s No Business Like

● Ethel Merman Showbusiness and her co stars included Donald O’Connor, Dan Dailey, Mitzi Gaynor and Marilyn Monroe. Ethel continued to dominate Broadway and created the role of Mama Rose in Gypsy in 1959.

A friend of mine slipped into a matinee of Gypsy and sat in the end seat in the back row ofthe theatre. As the lights dimmed he was vaguely aware of this woman in the darkness standing beside him in the isle.

Then the marvellous Miss Merman let go at the top of her voice with “Sing out Louise!” and my friend nearly went through the roof.

I thought Ethel was wonderful in the film It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World as the “mother from hell.”

Dorothy Provine, who played her daughter in the film, once told me that she was a “formidable lady.”

In the early 1960s Ethel came to Australia to do television work and performed at venues such as Chequers Nightclub in Sydney.

Ethel was married four times and had two children. Her marriage to Ernest Borgnine in 1964 lasted for a month and in her autobiography Ethel devoted a chapter to the marriage in the form of a blank page.

Her final on-screen performance was in the comedy Flying High in 1980. Ethel Merman passed away on the February 15, 1984.

She had the nickname of ‘leather lungs’ but there is no doubt that Ethel Merman was a marvellous singer and a true showbusiness legend – sadly missed.

Phillip Edwards presents haunting, ethereal images that echo the sentiment of early Australian landscape artists who infused a sense of melancholy with the sublime contrast; Alexandra Sasse's suburban motifs find poetry in the pragmatic-built environment.

Sasse is a recent finalist in two of Australia's most prestigious landscapes awards, the John Leslie Art Prize and the Lloyd Rees Art Prize.

Exhibition opens July 1 and closes July 12.

Houseman Galleries Reopening: Following theclosure in the recent lockdown the Housemuseum Galleries reopened to the public from June 23.

The new opening hours are Wednesdays to Sundays 11am-4pm.

The gallery is delighted to re-open with an exhibition of works by John Nixon (1949-2020) one of Australia's most celebrated and influential figures in abstract and non-objective art.

Displaying over 45 works from the Lyon Collection, the exhibition presents key aspects of Nixon's 59 year practice.

The exhibition opened June 23 and closes December 15.

Reimagined into projected concoctions of present-day uniqueness, they become fantasy and visual poetry, a collection of stories set to surprise, amuse and challenge the world from the creator's perspective.

In I Live Across the Road from the Future, artist Drasko Boljevic changes the walls and pavement of our Melbourne laneways and for the Dark Horse experiment canvas brings us new 3D stencil works.

Gone missing ■ Weather presenter on Channel 9 and 3AW, Livinia Nixon has taken long service leave and has plans to take her boys on school holidays once such memories are allowable. While Livinia is enjoying good times Madeleine Slattery will fill-in on Channel 9.

Sinatra croons jingle ■ Frank Sinatra and John F. Kennedy were good mates leading up to the 1960 elections in America. Frank agreed to High Hopes being used in a version to be used in Kennedy's election campaign.

For memory's sake the version can be heard on YouTube, it's worth hearing. Going through the right channels to use someone else's music is in contrast to Clive Palmer’s recent rip-off that cost him $1.5 million in damages.

Super Supra sold ■ The 1994 Toyota Supra featured in Fast and Furious films went on the auction block in LA. An anonymous buyer, by telephone, picked up the Toyota for a cool $550,000 .

Stars: *** Review: Mysterious and wild-eyed, a new security guard for a cash truck company surprises his co-workers when he unleashes precision skills during a heist, but the crew is left wondering who he is and where he came from, and soon, the marksman's ultimate motive becomes clear as he takes dramatic and irrevocable steps to settle a score.

Following on from his 2019 hit crime-caper "The Gentlemen," "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels," "Snatch" and "RocknRolla" writerdirector Guy Ritchie jumps the pond to the U.S. into his familiar crime territory, and this latest effort is an action-crime-drama that is a cool, tough, stylish, violent and wildly irresistible thrill ride!

The stand-out cast all at the top of their game includes Jason Statham as the mysterious, no-nonsense security guard, "Mindhunter" star Holt McCallany as his sidekick, Josh Hartnett as a fellow rookie security guard, Scott Eastwood in an impressive turn as a villain, Guy Ritchie stalwart Eddie Marsan as the company manager and Andy Garcia as a mysterious law enforcement agent, all combine to create a number of colourful characters that that bring "Wrath of Man" to vivid life.

But the unseen star here is writer-director Guy Ritchie, back again with all his wonderfully unique and distinctively acid-tongued ingredients, a tightly wound, fully loaded, double-barrelled blast that grips with a firm hold, and even though it lacks some of the "Guns, Geezers and G'Nors" humour of the aforementioned films, this is a nonetheless a compelling, darkly wicked and ferociously exhilarating ride!"

Stars: * * * Review: A college grad takes a clerical job in mid '90s New York city working for the literary agent of the renowned and notoriously reclusive writer J.D. Salinger, author of, among others, the literary classic "The Catcher in the Rye" (1951).

Based on the semi-autobiographical novel of the same name by Joanna Smith Rakoff, this quirky, light-hearted and engaging effort from writer-director Philippe Falardeau is structurally and emotionally flawed throughout, however, as the literary world is a difficult topic to transfer to the screen at the best of times, this antithesis of the more action and thriller fare on offer on screens, by way of the style and pacing of Woody Allen, with a touch of Terry Gilliam's "The Fisher King" (1991) and 2006's "The Devil Wears Prada," succeeds for the most part as an mildly entertaining history lesson.

Margaret Qualley (Fosse/Verdon) as the young clerical assistant at the literary agency, Joanna, gives an effective performance as she fumbles her way around the her new found surroundings, with aspirations of becoming a writer herself, however, it is veteran Sigourney Weaver as her demanding boss that elevates this to a whole new level of drama and emotion, even empathy, with a tightly commanding screen presence for every moment of her screen time, and is aided by a splendid supporting cast that includes Douglas Booth and veteran character Colm Feore (Chicago, Thor).

This may not be up there with other literary translation stories such as 2005's "Capote" or 2013's "The Great Gatsby," but where this does succeed is in introducing, or re-introducing depending on your age, to the mysterious and powerfully enigmatic author J.D. Salinger, and his work, most notably the hugely influential "The Catcher in The Rye," considered one of the great literary masterpieces of the 20th Century, and therefore, for this reason, along with another turn-out performance by Sigourney Weaver, this will cause much discussion and a visit to your local bookshop long after the credits have rolled.

Rourke’s Reviews Rurouni Kenshin: The Final ■ (MA). 138 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

This hugely successful series comes to an end with two new films, the first of which, rather ironically, is called The Final (the closing entry is entitled The Beginning), and has sadly gone to Netflix instead of cinemas.

Like its predecessors, this is fine entertainment on a grand scale, where considerable effort in all areas has ensured that fans of the films will walk away satisfied.

The Final is set in 1879, 12 years after the events that occurred in Part 3, and the new system of government which has been put in place. Kenshin Himura (Takeru Satoh), also known to many as feared killer Hitokiri Battosai, continues his quest of wanting to live a peaceful life.

Also returning are those who are close to him; Kaoru (Emi Takei), who still has feelings for Kenshin; teenage Yahiko (Riku Ohnishi); Sanosuke (Munetaka Aoki); and Megumi (Yu Aoi).

Other familiar faces include resistance agents Aoshi (Yusuke Iseya) and Misao (Tao Tsuchiya), and police officer Goro Fujita (Yosuke Eguchi).

The main villain this time is Enishi Yukishiro (Mackenyu Arata, son of the legendary Sonny Chiba), a Japanese villager who left his homeland for Shanghai, and after rising to the top of the Chinese Mafia, returns home to wreak havoc, specifically targeting everyone around Kenshin, as he wants to make the skilled swordsman suffer for a sin committed years before, involving his sister Tomoe (Kasumi Arimura).

Enishi is backed by some fearsome fighters, and before long destruction and death lie in their wake.

Kenshin must face Enishi in an effort to stop all the carnage being inflicted on those he cares about.

The film-makers really have taken each of the live-action Kenshin movies (the first three are available on DVD and blu-ray) to a higher level, and the results are clear to see.

Manga purists will complain about certain character and story arcs being overly condensed or dropped (it probably helps that I haven't read the source material), but as a film, this is first-rate work, and is a genuine cut above most big screen manga adaptations.

Director Keishi Ohtomo, who has helmed all the Kenshin features, has provided career best work throughout this series, and

teaming up with veteran action director Kenji Tanigaki (who worked in Hong Kong with stars like Jackie Chan and Donnie Yen), the committed cast members, numerous stunt people, and a gifted technical crew, provides some of the most eye-popping action set-pieces ever put on screen, made all the more impressive by the minimal (or sometimes even zero) use of CGI. As with the previous films, especially two and three, the wire work is exceptionally well-used. I can't wait for Rurouni Kenshin The Beginning, which should hit Netflix later this year.

I'm really hoping that all five films will screen at the Japanese Film Festival, as the big screen is where these wonderful films should be seen and experienced.

Luca ■ (PG). 95 minutes. Now streaming on Disney+.

Beautifully animated but disappointingly formulaic and predictable film from the Disney/Pixar studio, with a script that offers no surprises or engaging characters.

The story centres on Luca (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), a teenage sea monster who lives with his protective parents (Maya Rudolph and Jim Gaffigan).

Warned not to go to the surface and interact with people, Luca of course does the opposite, and sees that he transforms into human form when on land.

Meeting fellow sea creature Alberto (Jack Dylan Grazer), the two become friends with young Giulia (Emma Berman), and team up to participate in a local triathlon, where the winner will receive a Vespa.

While there are some humorous moments scattered about, there is a noticeable lack of inspiration, with characters that are decidedly bland.

For a much better viewing experience, watch Ponyo (2008).

Xtreme ■ (MA). 111 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Slick, often brutal action film from Spain feels inspired by films such as John Wick and Payback, while also harking back to the harder-edged action outings of the 1980's. The plot is simple; Stepbrothers Maximo (Teo Garcia) and Lucero (Oscar Jaenada) fall out big time when Lucero murders their crime boss father and takes over his lucrative business. Maximo and his sister Maria (Andrea Duro) are betrayed, but escape the clutches of henchmen Finito (Sergio PerisMencheta).

Concerns for horses from overseas ■ Some overseas trainers are a bit concerned over the new Scintigraphy system for checking horses arriving for our racing carnivals. That is causing a bit of confusion in some quarters.

Officials are attempting to allay fears by European trainers that the nuclear imaging technique is too intrusive, and will see their horses out of work for an unsustainable period of time.

Top international trainer, Aidan O'Brien, has said that under the current rules he wouldn't send horses to Melbourne.

He stated that he felt that very few horses would pass the controversial scan, required to enter.

O'Brien said: "It's a nuclear scan, to have to inject dye into their system, and then they have to stay in a closed box for four days for this nuclear thing to work".

But Racing Victoria's General Manager of Veterinary services, Grace Forbes, has rebutted the claims, saying a horse could be scanned with minimal impact to its training regime.

"Scintigraphy is a type of nuclear medicine, and it is a common diagnostic imaging technique that is used in both humans and in veterinary medicine internationally".

Ms Forbes said she been in discussions with some of the Irish vets that have been able to have clinics that provide these services.

"They have been able to assure me that similar as it is here in Victoria, where a horse is undergoing cautionary scintigraphy.

"The horses can work up to, and on the morning of presenting, to the clinic."

Forbes said that Racing Victoria would determine if Japanese horses needed to be scanned in Australia once they arrived.

The situation looks interesting with the time ticking away to the big Carnivals.

My good friend of many years, Ray Benson, a former top race caller with 3UZ and 3DB, joined us to talk about old times and how most of started in TV or radio.

Former top Channel 9 man, Phil Brady, was looking great along with his mate, Peter Smith.

My former working companion, news announcer, Brian Smith, joined us along with former top cameraman, Chris Bahen.

Peter Van, formerly with Magioc 1278, journeyed from Ballarat, for the day, while another of the golden voices of yesteryear, Paul Konik, who worked for the ABC, looked well.

Big step ■ News that Racing Victoria and the University have reached an agreement to provide oncall emergency veterinary services all yearround has met with large approval from all those in the racing industry.

The U-Vet Werribee Equine Centre previously provided services at locations such as the Werribee Quarantine Centre, during the Spring and Autumn Racing Carnivals.

U-Vet will now provide a 24-hour emergency on-call service for serious leg injuries and fractures, sustained during both training and racing.

The agreement also extends to horses injured at private training facilities.

U-Vet's services include advanced diagnostic imaging and lameness investigation, with equipment such as the standing CT Scanner.

"U-Vet's year-round on-call emergency service for thoroughbred horses should they sustain a serious injury during racing or training will be available".

Racing Victoria's Chief Executive, Giles Thompson, said: “It is a most important Welfare outcome".

And so say all of us in the racing industry.

■ I was sorry to hear the news that leading South Australian trainer, Leon McDonald, suffered a fractured hip in a track work accident at Morphettville.

The Group One winning trainer was knocked off balance, when one of his stable horses, Pearl Bandit, slid into him after finishing track work.

X-rays showed that he suffered a fracture in his hip, that would require surgery.

Mc Donald, with his co-trainer, Andrew Gluyas, has been a mainstay in South Australian racing ranks for more than 45 years.

They won the 2011 Caulfield Cup, with the good mare, Southern Speed, and have the top galloper, Dalsan, in their team.

We wish Leon, who I have known for many years, all the very best from all in racing.

Great effort ■ Young RSN racecaller Brendan Delaney capped off a big day with every calller’s dream.

He tipped all seven winners on top at the Ballarat meeting, including two or three at double figure odds from his first selections.
