■ CHANGE is underway at the top of two north-west Councils.

Stephen Wall, CEO at Maribyrnong City Council, has been induced to move to Wyndham City Council based at Werribee.

And at Brimbank, Helen Morrissey has announced her retirement from the CEO role (see report on Page 5).

Mr Wall j has served at Maribyrnong for nearly seven years. He will start at Wyndham on Monday, August 9.

Wyndham Mayor, Cr Adele Hegedich said she was thrilled that Mr Wall would join that City and said Wyndham would benefit from his experience as a long-term Chief Executive and Director having worked in the local government sector more than 23 years.

Dan attack backfires

■ The State Opposition’s questioning about Premier Dan Andrews’s serious injuries at a Sorrento beach house, gloriously backfired last week.

Shadow Treasurer Louise Staley called for answers to enquiries about matters including the Premier’s ambulance ride to Peninsula Private Hospital.

The Government outplayed the LiberalNational’s bid to make political capital out of the social media rumours that the Premier had been involved in a fight.

The Opposition’s episode looked a little like a Looney Tune where Marvin The Martian asks: “Where’s the Ka-Boom?”

Low road for Lou ■ Shaun Carney, Age columnist, says the “opposition took the low road, tempted by an opportunity it didn’t need to take”.

Rohan Smith, at news.com.au, said a theory on social media was that Mr Andrews instead must have fallen on stairs while drinking with close friend, trucking tycoon Lindsay Fox. 3AW commentator Neil Mitchell said he had spoken to Lindsay Fox who told him the pair hadn’t spoken for months.

Other pundits recalled that Ms Staley was previously convicted of drink driving in 2000 with a blood alcohol content of twice the legal limit.

One columnist indicated that the Ka-Boom might come in the form of defamation proceedings from Mr Andrews.

Honour for Glenyys

■ State Parliament identity Glenyys Romanes was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours on Monday (June 14).

Ms Romanes, a former MLC for Melbourne province, now has the AM postnominal in recognition of her service.

Amongst her many community service achievements, she started as a Councillor on Brunswick (Moreland) City Council.

Challenge in July

■ Liberal Party President Robert Clark will face a challenge at the State Conference to be held on July 24-25. The event was originally scheduled for June 5 but could not go ahead because of COVID-19 lockdown rules.

The ‘Labour’ Party ■ “Women are being forced to labour in public waiting rooms and give birth in emergency cubicles,” according to Ellen Sandell, Melbourne MLA (Greens).

Ms Sandell told Parliament last week: “They are waiting days for urgent inductions and they are being sent home too early, resulting in increased rates of mastitis and infection.

“Midwives are regularly working 18-hour shifts without a break. My question is: what is the government going to do to fix this crisis, particularly at the Royal Women’s, in the short term and not just in a few years?”

Media declines

■ Jacinta Allan, State Government Minister, spoke in State Parliament about the decline of regional media, but didn’t refer to the decline of current advertising from her Govermont to media outlets.

“Wwe are witnessing the ongoing, sad decline of regional media newsrooms. This is ironic given we are in an era where there is more content than ever before that is accessible. There is more information available than ever before, but our regional newsrooms are declining. We have seen in recent times that Channel 9 regional has wound back their operations.”

This will mean that a large section of the park and the Flemington Community Centre car park will be closed.

Later this year, the old sporting pavilion will be removed and works on the new Flemington Community Hub will commence.

Brimbank to be safer ■ Community safety in Brimbank will be improved with support from the State Government to help address the root causes of crime.

Natalie Hutchins, Minister for Crime Prevention, last Friday (June 11) announced the City of Brimbank will be the first local government Crime Prevention partner as part of the Victorian Government’s Building Safer Communities Program.

The partnership will result in $700,000 in grants for crime prevention programs determined by the local community.

Local communities can bring projects to life that improve safety and address crime in their area.

The first of the Government’s Building Safer Communities forums was held in Brimbank in November last year, hearing from local young people about the challenges and personal safety issues they face. Forums have since been held in Hume and Melton with another scheduled for Ballarat.

The grant builds on the issues explored at the forum and on the Government’s recent investment in crime prevention in Brimbank, including funding for CCTV, lighting and other safety improvements and programs for young people from diverse backgrounds.

● Helen Sui, Moonee Valley Council CEO An “unfortunate error” led to Moonee Valley Council’s removal of access to the goals at Cross Keys Reserve for Essendon Royals Soccer Club, the City’s CEO Helen Sui said. Matthew Galea told last week’s Council meeting that the Club received notice that the goals needed to be moved from the area they were being stored at by Wednesday May 13. “The club responded at approximately 1pm on the same day assuring that the goals would be moved at the conclusion of training on the same Monday on which the notice was received.

However, when coaches and players arrived at Cross Keys Reserve on Monday May 10, the goals were already locked up behind temporary fencing installed by Council contractors and coaches and players were unable to use the goals for club training. What was the process that saw the Essendon Royals' portable soccer goals locked behind temporary fencing by Council contractors?”

Ms Sui said the error was caused by “an eagerness to establish the project work site and poor internal communication”. “When the error was realised, Council officers immediately acted to rectify the issue by providing an opening in the fencing on Tuesday, May 11, for the Essendon Royals Soccer Club to access the goals. Following the incident, Council’s response also included apologising to the Essendon Royals Soccer Club’s nominated Council Liaison Officer for the error.”

Police are appealing for public as ✖ sistance to help locate St Kilda woman Sharon Fitzpatrick. The 47-year-

old is wanted on warrants for failing to appear in court for theft and obtain property by deception offences. Fitzpatrick is known to frequent the St Kilda and Melbourne CBD areas. Investigators have released an image of Fitzpatrick in the hope that someone may have information on her current whereabouts. Anyone who sights Fitzpatrick or has information about her whereabouts is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online at www.crime stoppersvic.com.au

■ Detectives from the Illicit Firearms Unit and officers from Australian Federal Police executed a warrant in Sydenham on Tuesday morning last week (June 8).

Information from Ironside led officers to a Contursi Drive address to execute a drugs and firearms warrant about 10am.

A 24-year-old Sydenham man attended the address and was taken into Police custody and a search commenced.

Officers searched the premises and it is alleged they found 6.5 kilograms of cannabis, over 100 grams of assorted drugs in tablet and powder form along with a conducted energy device and over $250,000 in cash.

The 24-year-old was assisting Police with their enquires.

Thefts at M’nong

Braybrook woman arrested ■ A woman has had her car impounded and is expected to be charged on summons with an array of offences after her car was intercepted by Police at South Yarra last week.

Prahran Highway Patrol officers pulled over a sedan travelling west on Citylink after clocking it at an alleged speed of 130kmh in an 80kmh speed zone about 10.50pm on Sunday, June 6.

A female P-plate driver, with two infant passengers under the age of two years onboard, underwent a preliminary breath test before returning an alleged evidentiary breath test reading of 0.111.

Her car was immediately impounded for 30 days at a cost of $878.50.

A 23-year-old Braybrook woman is expected to be charged on summons with speeding, drink driving and traffic offences.

Local Briefs Raid at Sydenham

■ Police have arrested two teens after a spate of theft from vehicles across the Maribyrnong Police Service Area..

Local Police allege 18 vehicles were broken into across the Maidstone and Braybrook areas between 9.15pm Tuesday (June 8) and 5am Wednesday (June 9).

It is alleged the offenders used a breaker tool to smash through each window and gain access to the vehicle.

Police were out patrolling when they observed a male acting suspiciously next to a vehicle on Myrtle Drive, Maribyrnong about 5am.

The boy was arrested, before another boy was located nearby and arrested.

The 17-year-old Braybrook boys have been charged with a number of offences including theft from motor vehicle and obtain property by deception.

Both teens were to be presented to a children’s court.

Concerns at Maidstone ■ The COVD-19 outbreak associated with Arcare at Maidstone continues to have serious effects across Melbourne.

At an inner-city Southbank townhouse complex, more than 100 residents have been told ro isolate after asuspected transmission between residents.

One of the residents is said to be a worker at Arcare Maidstone.

On Monday (June 12), Victoria recorded two new locally acquired Coronavirus cases, both of them children who are primary close contacts of existing cases and were quarantined during their infectious period.

Health Minister Martin Foley said one was linked to a case in the Reservoir household cluster while another was linked to a case in the City of Melbourne identified on Saturday, the ABC reported.

He said investigations into the source of infection for the City of Melbourne case indicated they had caught it from an infected Arcare worker who lived in the same "low-rise townhouse complex".

Mr Foley said the Arcare worker had taken up the offer of hotel quarantine when they tested positive, due to concerns they could not safely quarantine at home.

■ Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit detectives have charged a man following a pursuit in Werribee on Monday last week (June 7).

Officers spotted an alleged stolen Hyundai Elantra sedan travelling on Duncans Rd and attempted to intercept it about 3.15pm before it drove away.

Later that evening, Police responded to a ‘000’ call for a suspicious loiter and located a man with the alleged stolen car parked on Duncans Rd about 9.20pm.

It isalleged the man fled in the car and was pursued by police with assistance from the AirWing through Point Cook and Laverton.

Officers arrested the man after he abandoned the car and ran into the rear yard of a house on Duncans Rd, Werribee.

Police allege the car was stolen in a carjacking incident on June 5 in Werribee.

A 22-year-old Wyndham Vale man was charged with carjacking, dangerous driving, reckless conduct endanger life, unlicenced driving, drug driving offences, drug possession, weapon offences, theft and unlawful assault.

He was also issued with a penalty notice for being outside the 10km radius under the Chief Health Officer directions.

He was remanded overnight and was to at the Werribee Magistrates’ Court.

■ A man has been released pending further enquires following an alleged hit and run collision in Williamstown on Saturday morning (Juen 12). A 27-year-old Moonee Ponds man was jogging southbound on Douglas Pde when he was hit by a vehicle about 6.10am.

The driver allegedly failed to stop at the scene and the jogger was taken to hospital with serious injuries. A 21-year-old Williamstown man attended a police station and was interviewed by investigators.

■ Two new sites in North Geelong and others in Bundoora, Epping, Reservoir, Southbank and Thomastown were added to the list of potential exposure sites.

Most are Tier two sites requiring people to isolate, get tested and remain in isolation until they receive a negative test result.

There has been a detection of viral fragments of COVID-19 in a wastewater sample taken on June 10 from the sewer catchment serving a population of about 33,000 persons in the north-eastern suburbs.

T his new detection is of interest as there are currently no confirmed COVID-19 cases in that area but multiple exposure sites in and near the catchment.

The unexpected detections may be due to someone who has had COVID-19 but is no longer infectious continuing to ‘shed’ the virus, or it may be due to an active but undiagnosed infectious case.

Residents of and visitors between June 9-10 to the suburbs of Balwyn North, Bulleen, Bundoora, Eaglemont, Heidelberg, Heidelberg Heights, Ivanhoe, Ivanhoe East, Kew East, Macleod, Rosanna, Viewbank, Watsonia and Yallambie are urged to monitor for symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested if any develop.

The wastewater testing program is designed as an early warning system and a cautious approach is always taken when these detections are found.

The Department of Health has increased wastewater testing in the area and will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Inspiration at Hobsons Bay ■ Hobsons Bay Council is inviting nominations for the Inspiring Young Person Awards.

“Nominate yourself, or someone you know between 12 and 25 years who live, work, study or volunteer in Hobsons Bay,” said Mayor Cr Jonathan Marsden.

Cocaine: Y’ville warrant ■ An investigation into drug trafficking has led to four men being charged this month, with Police seizing significant quantities of drugs, cash and designer goods as well as two luxury cars and a Harley Davidson motorbike.

The Melbourne Divisional Response Unit executed seven search warrants on Friday, June 4, at a range of suburbs including Melbourne, Southbank, St Kilda, Truganina and Yarraville.

Helen, Brimbank CEO, retires ■ Helen Morrissey has announced she is retiring as Brimbank City Council’s Chief Executive Officer, effective July 15.

Ms Morrissey has been in the role since 2017 and at Brimbank City Council since 2010 as General Manager and later as Director Corporate and Community Relations.

With close to 40 years’ experience in local government, Ms Morrissey was previously General Manager of Corporate Services at Maribyrnong City Council.

Prior to that Ms Morrissey worked in a variety of management roles in community services and corporate areas at Darebin City Council and before that Preston City Council.

“I would like to extend my deepest thanks to Ms Morrissey for her extensive knowledge, experience and passion she has demonstrated while at Brimbank,” said Mayor Cr Ranka Rasic. “Helen has shown exceptional leadership and worked extremely well with the Council.”

Arrests at Braybrook ■ Three teenagers who pushed an allegedly stolen car out of a service station on Monday morning (June 14) have been arrested by police in Braybrook.

The alarm was raised when the trio caught the attention of a service station attendant on Old Geelong Rd about 12.45am.

The teenagers had purchased some fuel for the car before they tried to drive away but the car wouldn’t start.

In trying to solve their predicament the males started to push the car from the station into a nearby service lane.

Police were able to run a check of the car registration which revealed the car was stolen in an aggravated burglary in Braybrook last Friday (June 11).

A number of Police units converged on the scene and after a short foot chase three teenagers were arrested.

Enquiries are ongoing in relation to a fourth male who it is believed was also in the car at the time.

A quantity of suspected drugs and cash was also found on two of the teens.

The trio, a 16-year-old from Truganina, 18year-old from Taylors Hill and a 15-year-old from St Albans, have all been charged in rela-

tion to the theft of the motor car and drugs and weapons offences.

The Truganina teen has been bailed by police to appear at a children’s court at a later date.

The other two males are expected to be held over to appear in court.

Works start at Sunbury ■ Work is about to start on the Gap Rd level crossing removal, to free up Sunbury’s worst traffic bottleneck.

Digging will begin in early July alongside Gap Rd and Station St as underground services are relocated and trees are removed.

This will occur before major construction on the new road underpass starts later this year.

Detailed design work continues on the project, but traffic changes will be needed on Gap Rd to keep workers and road users safe until major construction is complete in 2022.

From July5, one westbound traffic lane will be closed on Gap Rd/Station St between Horne and Evans Sts, with the other lane remaining open. The westbound bike lane and pedestrian path will also be closed, with detours in place.

In the coming months onegerous level crossing.

● Josh Bull, Sunbury MLA lane will also be closed eastbound on Gap Rd/Station St, with one traffic lane remaining open and detours for cyclists and pedestrians.

The Gap Rd level crossing will be replaced two years early, with a new rail bridge and a road underpass on Gap Rd/

Station St between Horne St and Evans St, including a shared path on both sides to provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists.

The road under rail design will ensure the heritage-listed Sunbury Station is preserved and have the least impact on rail services during construction, although there will still be some disruption at times.

The Gap Rd level crossing is Sunbury’s worst traffic bottleneck, with the boom gates down for up to 26 per cent of the morning peak.

About 19,000 vehicles pass through the crossing each day, expected to rise to 27,000 by 2026.

The project is part of the Sunbury line upgrade, which will prepare the line for bigger, more modern trains that will run when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025 – giving passengers access to five new stations .

The 56-year-old is wanted on warrant in relation to traffic offences.

Piazza has short grey hair and often wears dark rimmed glasses.

Investigators have released an image of Piazza in the hope that someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

■ Pascoe Vale MLA Lizzie Blandthorn has spoken in State Parliament about works needed at the Derby Street Children’s Centre.

“The action I seek is that the minister consider the application that Derby Street Children’s Centre has made to the Andrews Labor Government’s Building Blocks Capacity—2021–22 Expansion and 2021 grant program for capital upgrades,” Ms Blandthorn told the Legislative Assembly last week.

“The Moreland City Council early childhood facility has undergone dangerous structural challenges in recent weeks.

“They have dealt with a partial roof collapse within their building, and whilst this event occurred outside of hours - although the cleaner was still on the premises - it posed a significant safety risk and certainly scared the community.

“This is a centre I am also very familiar with, and it scared me. The outcome of this partial roof collapse could have been absolutely tragic, and I can understand why the parents remain concerned.

“I have been advised the Department of Education and Training worked promptly with Moreland City Council to ensure council rectified these issues to make sure that the safety of the children within the centre and that of the staff and the parents is maintained and is of the highest priority.

“Through this grant program the centre is seeking our government’s support to upgrade their ageing facilities and particularly to boost capacity to accommodate the rollout of three-year-old kinder.

“Derby Street Children’s Centre provides exceptional community-oriented early childhood care and education to my community, and in fact it stands as the only communitybased childcare centre that includes sessional kindergarten funded positions in the northern part of the Moreland municipality.

“As a local parent, I know that the community think very highly of this centre and the educational opportunities that it provides for their children.

“The centre director, Louise Wood, along with the assistant centre director, Julie Payne, and their fabulous hardworking and loyal staff and parent committee do such a great job in creating a welcoming care and learning environment, which plays such an important role in ensuring that local kids get the best start in life and that the educational foundation for them to thrive at school is built in this setting.

“Whilst the centre has made the best use of its current facilities, it is clear, especially from the recent event of the roof collapse, that this council facility is in significant need of an upgrade.

“Ageing facilities aside, the centre is also facing the challenge of meeting the increased demand from our growing young population in the area.

“Their waiting list speaks to this very challenge. This project would allow the centre to increase their capacity and to play a local role in delivering our state’s rollout of universal three-year-old kinder.

“The centre is in much need of an upgrade to set up its care and education services for the future and to meet the needs of our growing Pascoe Vale community, and I would greatly appreciate the minister’s consideration of its application,” Ms Blandthorn said.

● Christopher Walken ■ Percy Vs Goliath is a film that will remind viewers of the Australian classic, The Castle.

But while The Castle was a comedy with the serious idea of the ordinary man taking on the big boys, Percy Vs Goliath strikes a more serious tone, and is based on a true story.

Based on a 1998 lawsuit, Percy Vs. Goliath follows Canadian farmer Percy Schmeiser (Christopher Walken) who defends himself against a major conglomerate when the company's genetically modified (GMO) canola is discovered in his crops.

He and his family risk everything defending themselves against the giant corporation while representing thousands of other disenfranchised farmers in a campaign to protect farmers' rights and the world's food supply against corporate greed.

Percy is our Everyman, a humble farmer who grows crops and propagates seeds the way his family has down the generations, and his apparent ordinariness makes him an easy target for the huge corporation Monsanto, as Percy's success as a crop farmer is seen as a threat to their business model, so he is an easy target to grind into the dust.

But they reckoned without Percy's and his wife Louise's (Roberta Maxwell) simple but strong beliefs in who they are and their confidence in what is right and wrong.

When Percy hears of the global suicide rate of farmers who have been squeezed into crushing debt by big corporations, he decides he must fight on behalf of farmers across the world.

Eventually Percy wins through, but not without some cost. But more than 20 years after the court case, the real Percy and Louise still receive letters of gratitude from farmers all over the world - and genetically modified crops have not taken over.

In the film's narrative, Percy is brought to prominence by environmentalist Rebecca (Christina Ricci), and, like The Castle, it's a small town lawyer Jackson Weaver (Zach Braff), who takes the case all the way to the Canadian Supreme Court.

Percy Vs Goliath is a slow burn for the first 30 minutes but gradually hooks the viewer in until the final credits.

Walken gives a stunning performance as the film's protagonist, and Percy is a gift of a role for a fine actor.

As his supportive but assertive wife Louise, Roberta Maxwell radiates warmth and common sense, and there is a lovely mature chemistry between her and Walken.

In the movie world, youth so often dominates, so it's refreshing to see a high quality and thoughtful film in which 78-year-old Walken and 80-year-old Maxwell arethe stars.

Zealot ■ Comedian and ABC podcast host Ange Lavoipierre is bringing her award-winning show Zealot to Melbourne on June 18 and 19 at 7pm at The Butterfly Club.

From Santa-based existentialism to Bible camp and a detour into Tarot, one-time believer Ange Lavoipierre charts the course from 10 year old evangelist to fully fledged heathen.

The line-up locked in for the July soiree features four readers who will reflect on ‘the words I wish I’d said’, including television host Myf Warhurst, journalist and podcaster Osman Faruqi, Walkley-award winning radio host Virginia Trioli as well as editor and arts worker Lujayn Hourani.

Writer Tony Birch will deliver a ‘living eulogy’ – paying tribute to someone or something still of this earth, while vocalist and instrumentalist Bumpy will present a moving musical performance.

Better Off Said is an opportunity to release some words, thoughts and reflections for the living and dead.

Baker and Hardy explain that the guests are asked to write and read anything that resonates with them – it may be poignant, sad, raw, political or funny.

“It may be a time to find closure or a moment to shout something aloud they wish they’d said. It could be an important message to someone special or a piece of history they feel their voice could have improved. This is an opportunity to sing their truths from the rooftops before it’s too late,” said Baker and Hardy.

Sisters in Crime ■ Sisters in Crime’s 28th Scarlet Stiletto Awards for best short crime and mystery stories is offering a record $11,910 in prizes this year.

Entries close on August 31.

“Crime does pay – at least on the page,” said Carmel Shute, secretary of Sisters in Crime.

“And writing is a lot safer than holding up your local service station, especially during a pandemic.”

“We’re thrilled that all but one sponsor has continued their support despite these financially fraught times – and that two new supporters have come on board.”

One of the awards is the Viliama Grakalic Art and Crime Award ($750) named in honour of the late artist, and long-time member, who bequeathed $4000 to Sisters in Crime.

Viliama Grakalic was born in Zagreb and trained in fine art. In Australia she became a prominent goldsmith and sculptor. Her work is housed in public gallery collections Australiawide.

In her later years Viliama decided to write a crime novel with an art theme, set in country Victoria. Breast cancer sadly took control, so as a pensioner she bequeathed “anything left over” to Sisters in Crime. At SheKilda, Sisters in Crime 10th anniversary convention in 2001, Viliama won the very first ‘Be Immortalised in Fiction’ competition, which means her name appeared in the next novel by Lauren Henderson, the international guest of honour and self-proclaimed ‘Tart Noir Queen’.

Shute said that several sponsors had also upped the amount on offer.

“Our 15 sponsors are a diverse bunch. What they have in common is an unswerving commitment to women’s writing. which has paid off in spades. Since the awards began 28 years ago, 3896 stories have been entered and 30 winners – including winners of the Shoe and category winners – have gone on to have books published,” she said.

Darkfield Radio ■ At-home audio experience, Darkfield Radio is back this month in Australia for its second season, Knot.

Part of the Tribeca Film Festival Immersive Lineup, Knot is a three-part immersive audio experience designed for one person which unfolds in three different locations in one evening, blurring the lines between real and imagined.

Produced in Australia by Melbourne-based company Realscape Productions, Knot takes audiences through three intersecting, interwoven episodes revolving around a traumatic event, questioning how inevitable anything is.

In the first episode audiences will situate themselves on a park bench, the second in a car, and the third in a room of their home. For the story to be complete, all three episodes will need to be experienced.

"Darkfield Radio Season One exposed audiences to the mysterious and supernatural inside their homes, magnified by Darkfield’s signature 360 degree binaural sound”, said Amy Johnson, producer at Realscape Productions.

“We’re looking forward to getting audiences outside of their homes for Season 2, in COVIDsafe settings of course, and pushing them out of their comfort zones even more.”

Ahead of the Season Two launch in Australia on June 25, Darkfield Radio Season One is broadcasting to homes around Australia for a limited season until June 20.

Darkfield Radio Season One was the first ever audio-only experience to be a part of Venice International Film Festival, before being nominated for various awards at Raindance Film Festival.

Singing Swallows ■ Singing Swallows, written and directed by Melbourne based theatre-maker Romi Kupfer, is being presented at Theatre Works, 14 Acland

Singing Swallows is an intimate headphone experience designed to connect young people with those who went through the Holocaust.

This compilation of four Holocaust stories is created for young audiences between the ages of nine and 18 years, with each story focusing on four different journeys of Jewish children/ young adults during the Holocaust.

The stories, compiled from interviews with Holocaust survivors are voice recorded by young Jewish children in primary school.

In between verbal storytelling, performers on stage activate a recyclable set, bringing to life the personal experiences heard through individual headphones worn by the audience.

Romi Kupfer describes Singing Swallows as exploring 'what life was like for a young person during this time and how much they might've understood that their communities, identity and lives were at risk.

Beauty and The Beast Jr ■ The Young Australian Broadway Chorus (YABC) presents Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr from July 8-10 at the National Theatre, St Kilda.

Inspired by the nine-time Tony-nominated original Broadway production and Academy Award-winning motion picture, Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr will showcase a 70-strong cast of talented young performers.

The show will feature popular songs like Be Our Guest, Gaston and Beauty and the Beast written by Alan Menken. This family-friendly, 70-minute show will deliver a spectacular theatrical experience on the grand scale owing to the large cast and fabulous costumes.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast Jr tells the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, a young prince trapped under the spell of an enchantress.

Gazpacho ■ Peter Green’s Gazpacho works more as a tribute than a play. It serves as a requiem for the lives lost during the Spanish Civil War interweaving the words of Federico Lorca (Jim Daly) with vignettes of those who lost their lives, faced starvation and those sentenced to death. Whilst the Spanish references are specific and probably unfamiliar to many, the theme is universal.

One only has to think of innocent civilians suffering in war zones today.

The ensemble (Julie Dawson, Peter Green, Dion Mills, Louisa Williamson) take on the roles of the dead, soldiers guarding prisoners, the Republicans, the Nationalists and Communists.

We hear the voices of grieving mothers, of simple farmers and starving civilians. The short sixty minute duration of the play, however, limits the capacity to develop the pathos one would find in scenarios where an ideological discussion takes place against the backdrop of a death sentence.

Faye Bendrup’s direction made good use of

the simple set, four frames that could be easily moved to contain the performance space, and the lighting could be directed to accentuate single performers when needed or create atmosphere as required.

Original music (Faye Bendrups, Dan Bendrups) punctuated the scenes the feel of which might be considered more socialist than typically Spanish in flavour.

The influence of Lorca and his writing on those fighting in the Spanish Civil War is indeterminate though Green’s work poses an intriguing possibility about the power of poetry in this regard.

Lorca was abducted by Nationalist forces and executed in the Spanish countryside near the farm of Cortijo de Gazpacho. Along with Hemingway and Orwell, both of whom fought in the civil war, Lorca’s contribution to letters remains. This work whets the appetite suggesting there’s more here to be explored about the man and his work.

Gruesome Playground Injuries

■ The American playwright Jajiv Joseph’s (2011) brilliant, funny yet dark and complex play Gruesome Playground Injuries, performed at The Butterfly Club CBD Melbourne.

It is competently directed by Ellen Wiltshire and brought to the stage by Deep Cut Productions. This play is a non-chronological journey that begins 30 years ago and is about loss, love, pain and regret. Its disjointed structure is not chronological but rather by jumping around in time yet keeping to the same theme of hurt, pain, loss and regret ‘cleverly’ captures the human nature of memory.

This production provides us with some great young and exciting talent. The music was composed by Maddy Monja who provides music that creates an appropriate mood as a complementary background to the play. The music at times sounds dissonant with melodic fragments woven into the overall canvas, fitting well to each scene.

Rory Harman (Doug) and Marley Correy (Kayleen) provided the intimate audience with a delightfully balanced performance in their powerful, realistic interpretation of the characters they represent.

Harman and Correy sustained the audience’s attention throughout as the chemistry between them was exactly right, as they moved through a series of emotions over a long and sustained period. One almost feels Doug and Kayleen’s pain and suffering, and this engenders real empathy in the audience.

A most enjoyable and refreshing experience on a rather cold evening leading into fear of another COVID lockdown in Melbourne.

■ At the altest Marquee Club luncheon at the Emerald Hotel, the entertainment industry came together to celebrate John Blackman and his four-year battle with cancer.

After having reconstructive surgery to the mouth and face, it has been a long and courageous journey for John.

Of course John enjoyed a remarkable career on radio and television with the hilarious voice overs on Hey Hey It's Saturday.

John was also a corporate speaker and M.C. for functions all over Australia. With the cancer battle, all of his work dried up to nothing and now he is fighting back.

We all came together to support one of the nicest guys in the business. Probably one of the funniest lunches I have ever attended. When you get Molly, Red Symons and John Blackman together in the same room, all with microphones, no-one is missed.

Stroke more likely ■ There's little doubt the pandemic is making a lot of people a little obsessive-compulsive about cleanliness.

However, OCD is a real mental health disorder that's about more than just washing hands. For adults dealing with a clinical case of obsessive-compulsive disorder, a new study finds troubling news about their brain health later in life.

Researchers say OCD patients are over three times more likely to suffer an ischemic stroke than those without the condition.

An ischemic stroke occurs when a blood clot interrupts the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain. This is the more common version of a stroke, in comparison to haemorrhagic strokes which involve a burst blood vessel causing bleeding in the brain.

Overall, strokes are the second-leading cause of death worldwide, trailing only heart disease.

Roger Daltrey fights back

■ The Who lead singer Roger Daltrey has joined the wave of rock musicians speaking out against woke culture and its effect on society.

Speaking with DJ Zane Lowe on Apple Music, the Baba O'Riley singer said that the "woke generation" is creating a "miserable world" for themselves and everyone else.

"It's just getting harder to disseminate the truth," Daltrey said.

"It's almost like, now we should turn the whole thing off. Go back to newsprint, go back to word of mouth, and start to read books again. It's becoming so absurd now with AI, all the tricks it can do, and the woke generation," he said.

"It's terrifying, the miserable world they're going to create for themselves. I mean, anyone who's lived a life and you see what they're doing, you just know that it's a route to nowhere.

“Especially when you've lived through the periods of a life that we've had the privilege to. We've had the golden era. There's no doubt about that."

Daltrey compared the woke generation with previous generations. "We came out of a war, we came out of a levelled society, completely flattened bomb sites and everything," Daltrey said.

"And we've been through socialist governments. We've seen the communist system fail in the Soviet Union. I've been in those communist countries while they were communist."

■ Over the past year, food prices are up 3.5 per cent, with eggs and meat up by over 5 per cent; gas is up 22 per cent and is expected to get even higher by this summer; lumber is up 250 percent; new home prices are up $36,000, with overall housing up 11 per cent; and new cars are up 9 percent, the highest in 68 years. Feeding the problem is the sharp price increase in commodities vital to our basic needs.

Microchip prices are up by 25 percent over the last year, hiking the price of items from phones to televisions to car parts. Meanwhile, increased corn prices will further impact a variety of food products.

The primary driver of the current inflation comes through money printing by the Federal Reserve. The Fed nearly doubled its bond purchases since the beginning of the pandemic, pumping almost $4 trillion into the economy. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said just last week that she is not concerned about it. The White House says that any inflation seen will be mild and temporary.

How’s this for confidence?

■ For almost half of all Americans, modesty may not be their best quality. A new study finds nearly one in two people believe they're the best person they know. In a recent survey of 2000 US residents, 81 per cent say they believe that humankind is inherently good. Three in four believe they themselves are fundamentally a good person. When researchers asked respondents how they would compare themselves to others in their lives, 46 per cent went a step further, admitting (in their eyes) they're "better" than everyone else they know.

The survey was conducted by One Poll and commissioned by Behold Retreats, a wellness company that specialises in the therapeutic use of plant-based medicines to aid in personal and spiritual growth. Looking at responses by gender, female respondents were less likely to think of themselves as good (67% vs 86% of men) and more likely to believe that humanity is inherently bad (20% vs 4% of men).

Time for early release

■ California is beginning early release credits for about 76,000 inmates, including tens of thousands who were convicted of violent crimes, as the state continues to reduce its prison population.

The Associated Press reported that of the 76,000 who will be eligible for early release, some 63,000 were convicted of violent crimes.

They will now be eligible to obtain good behaviour credits that will "shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017," the outlet reported.

That number includes 20,000 inmates who were sentenced to life sentences with the possibility of parole.

"More than 10,000 inmates convicted of a second serious but nonviolent offense under the state's 'three strikes' law will be eligible for release after serving half their sentences.

“That's an increase from the current time-served credit of one-third of their sentence," the AP said.

■ The bodies of hundreds of New York City residents who died from COVID-19 at the beginning of the pandemic remain in a series of trailers along the Brooklyn waterfront more than a year later, according to the New York Post.

Dina Maniotis, executive deputy commissioner of the Chief Medical Examiner's Office, told a City Council health committee that there are about 750 bodies in long-term storage at the "temporary" emergency morgue that opened last April, the paper reported.

Early in the pandemic, refrigerated trucks were used in many places across the US to augment capacity at morgues and funeral homes, which were stretched beyond capacity as COVID spiralled out of control.

"In the very near future, we will begin to notify all the families that we've been working with that we are now going to ramp our operations down slowly, give them the time that they need, and we'll keep the operation going as they need it," Maniotis told the committee.

The facility was meant to give families extra time to make their decisions during the days of broad lockdowns and severely decreased mobility. Some have reportedly requested their relatives' remains be buried in the city's potter's field, Hart Island, while city officials have lost touch with others, Maniotis said.

Magazine ■ Irene Hewitt was born in 1922 and began singing at an early age. Irene was 18 when she became the resident vocalist in Tye's Radio Revue on 3XY, which was broadcast every Sunday night from the Princess Theatre.

The compere was Eric Pearce, and Irene sang Ida Sweet As Apple Cider as her debut song on the show. On many occasions Irene sang duets with Jack Perry.

She sang at many of the local dances and was also resident vocalist at the Coconut Grove Nightclub in Chapel St, South Yarra.

Around that time she married her first husband, who played saxophone in the band at The Coconut Grove. Irene also sang regularly at the famous Chevron Hotel.

In 1954 Irene appeared on the national radio show Australia's Hour of Song with Dick Fair.

She was a regular guest on ABC radio shows and sang on cruise ships.

In 1957 Irene was cast in the television series Take That which was a ‘live to air’ 15-minute school classroom comedy. It was one of the first comedy shows produced by Crawford Productions, a bit like Yes What, the old radio series.

Take That also starred English actor Phillip Stainton, Joff Ellen, Frank Rich, Keith Eden and Jack Perry.

Irene sang on many television variety shows during her career. Her film credits include Blue Fire Lady, Dimboola, I Live With Me Dad and Lonely Hearts.

In 1981 Irene was cast as Mrs Swabb, the housekeeper, in an Australian tour of the Alan Bennett-play, Habeus Corpus. The cast included a great bunch of popular television actors - English actor Frank Thornton (Are You Being Served), Pat McDonald (Number 96) and Liz Burch (The Flying Doctors) .

There was a night during the tour when a leg snapped off the stage settee that almost everyone had to sit on. Irene madly searched around back stage in the dark and finally walked onstage with a paint tin which she popped under the edge of the settee and the play proceeded without a hitch.

and his wife and they always sent each other Christmas cards. Irene played guest roles in many television series including Prisoner and The Henderson Kids.

Irene loved music and was a regular attendee at the International Sinatra meetings. Some of her recordings were - When Johnny Comes Marching Home, I Didn't Know The Gun Was Loaded and One More River To Cross (with Don Harper and His Orchestra).

In 1997 Irene was a guest vocalist at a special fundraising concert for 96.5FM. It was a big show with Val Jellay, Clyde Simpson, Bruce Skeggs, David McGee, Ray Lawrence, The Creole Bells and many others in the line up.

Irene Hewitt loved life and when she was very ill she just refused to give in and slipped out of the hospital to visit her friends.

She passed away in 2004 and I attended her funeral. Long time friends Terry Gill and Carole Anne got everyone singing. Irene would have loved it and also the thunderous applause as the coffin was carried out of the funeral parlour.

Best known for his interactive, large-scale light installations inspired largely by his interest in shared human experience, the exhibition combines spectacular indoor and outdoor experimental artworks with intimate story-pieces, revealing the depth of the artist's practice and the breadth of his sources, from personal and philosophical to the literary and spiritual.

Monash Gallery of Art Stages: Photography through the Pandemic In response to the social, environmental and economic impact of COVID-19 global pandemic on Australian artists and society at large, MGA has commissioned artists Jane Burton, Cherine Fahd, Isobel Knowles and Van Sowerwine, Phong Ngo and James Tylor to respond creatively with new bodies of work for the exhibition Stages photography through the pandemic.

Photographers image the spaces between us, whether physical or psychological, be it through portraits or landscapes, within the domestic sphere of the public realm. The significance of work and leisure routines and the liberty of everyday behaviours we take for granted is never better understood than when the right and ability to do them is taken away.

Remember Rin Tin Tin ■ Remember when TV was in its infancy, and you raced home from school to catch the latest adventures of Rusty and his four-legged friend Rin Tin Tin? Child actor Lee Acker played Rusty in the series in 1950, when his part came to an end Lee drifted in and out of bit parts in movies, became a carpenter and fell into poverty having spent all his earnings. Last month Lee died, and a group of friends paid for his funeral.

Stars: * * * ½ Review: Following a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas, a group of mercenaries take the ultimate gamble by venturing into the quarantine zone of a walled off Las Vegas to pull off a monumental heist, but only have matter of hours before they all face nuclear annihilation.

The Zombie genre has gone a long way since "White Zombie" (1932) with Bela Lugosi and George A. Romero's seminal 1968 classic "Night of the Living Dead" and his universally acclaimed follow up "Dawn of the Dead" in 1978, and this latest offering from co-writer/ director Zack Snyder, who made his feature directorial debut with the acclaimed 2004 remake of "Dawn of the Dead," and went on to helm such films as "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice," "Sucker Punch," "300" and "Zack Snyder's Justice League," among others, has delivered a stylishly wild and insanely entertaining thrill ride.

Inspired by John Carpenter's "Escape From New York" and James Cameron's "Aliens," among others, there's something for everyone in the mix: a zombie movie, an action movie, a heist movie, and even some nostalgic family drama, all intertwined with an abundance of bloody confrontations and twists-and-turns, all led with a firm hand and soft heart by former world wrestling champ turned actor Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Infinity War & Endgame, Blade Runner 2049 & Spectre), and aided by a bunch of rag-tag misfits that includes Ella Pernell, Tig Notaro and Matthias Schweighofer as the safecracker, to name a few.

Filled with jaw-dropping imagery, Zack Snyder has created a well constructed, well paced and an immensely gratifying zombie-horror popcorn adventure yarn, a diabolically R18+ fun and grandiose gore-fest of spills, chills, humour, slicing, dicing, chopping, running, jumping, shooting and munching mayhem, a shrewdly executed rollercoaster ride with an abundance of bite for horror and zombie fans, but most of all, a superior addition to the genre that respectfully and faithfully adherer's to the template set out by zombie maestro George A. Romero over five decades ago.

Stars: *** Review: A three-person space mission suddenly becomes four when the crew discover an unconscious stowaway, but too late to turn back to Earth, the flustered stowaway has no choice but to accompany the trained astronauts throughout their journey, however, when an unforeseeable incident leaves only enough oxygen for three people, it puts the crew in a moral quandary and a fight for their lives.

Human expendability drives the core of this claustrophobic and immersive slow burning space drama that for the most part holds interest throughout as the steady build to its conclusion, a well made and visually stimulating adventure that seems to draw heavily from the universal space movie handbook, yet it make no apologies about any feelings of déjà vu, and for the most part with competence and success without flaw.

Stars Anna Kendrick, Tony Colletts Daniel Day Kim and Sharmier Anderson each deliver convincing performances with understanding, humour, empathy and believability, and are aided by superb set design and special effects as they ultimately reach out to the deep depths of space in their unexpected fight for survival, Co-Writer/Director: Joe Penna, whose previous credit includes the gripping 2018 survival tale "Arctic" with Mads Mikkelsen, has created a moody another atmospheric survival tale, an intimate yet at the same time an epic journey that is the total antithesis of such sci-fi fare as "Star Wars," "Star Trek" or "Alien," to name a few, relying solely on the human drama, and proves beyond doubt that journeys into space can be equally gripping without the aid of aliens, extraterrestrial creatures and space battles to make an unworldly thrill ride.

Rourke’s Reviews First Love ■ (MA). 110 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Initially set for theatrical release March last year, Takashi Miike's (Audition, 13 Assassins) energetic, highly entertaining action/comedy/ romance thankfully receives a much-deserved big screen release, and is a crazed, often hilarious cross between Martin Scorsese's After Hours (1985) and Kenji Uchida's Stranger Of Mine (2005).

A budding romance between Reo (Masataka Kubota) and Monika (Sakurako Konishi) is put to the test, as they inadvertently become involved with warring gangsters and corrupt cops over a very memorable night.

Miike plays out the outlandish scenario with skilled precision, and there are standout performances from Shota Sometani and Becky.

Deliver Us From Evil ■ (MA). 108 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Despite a number of familiar plot elements, this is an effectively dour, expertly crafted action/thriller that shows two anti-heroes fighting each other over very different views on what the true meaning of family is.

Hwang Jung-min plays Innam, an ex-NIS agent-turned assassin who has just completed his Tokyo-located final mission before retiring to the beaches of Panama.

In Thailand, In-nam's former lover is murdered after their young daughter Yoo-min (Park So-yi) is abducted.

Hearing the tragic news, In-nam travels to Thailand to find Yoomin, and to also investigate who killed her mother.

Unfortunately, the brother of the vicious yakuza In-nam recently assassinated, appropriately called Ray The Butcher (Lee Jung-Jae), has also arrived on the scene, wanting to exact bloody revenge.

Helping In-nam is transsexual Yoo-yi (Park Jung-min), a Korean ex-pat who has never encountered carnage like this in her life.

While the basic storyline plays to formula, the particular aspect which intrigued me most was seeing two men, both with dark pasts, interpreting through conflicting eyes, the primary reason which they feel justifies the inordinate amount of death and destruction they create.

While violent, writer/director Hong Won-chan (whose directorial debut, Office, was moody, absorbing, but uneven) presents quite a bit of the brutality around the edge of the frame or completely

offscreen (similar to Fernando Meirelles' underrated 2008 film, Blindness), but this is still not recommended for the squeamish.

Hwang (The Spy Gone North, The Wailing) and Lee (Assassination, The Thieves) offer convincing, deliberately opposed performances, successfully re-teaming after appearing together in the marvellous 2013 gangster drama, New World.

There is also excellent work from Park (The King, Psychokinesis) as Yoo-yi, which won him the Korean Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor this year.

Production values are exceptional. While there is too much in the plotting which prevents it from being truly original, and its slowburn pacing and quiet stretches will annoy diehard action fans, Deliver Us From Evil has a fascinating theme at its core, and combined with strong acting and first-rate action, is intriguing enough to provide solid entertainment.

Hopefully the extended Final Cut (running 114 minutes) will turn up soon after.

Oxygen ■ (M). 101 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Alexandre Aja, whose body of work as a director has been variable at best, delivers his best film since High Tension (2003), the knockout horror/thriller that put him on the cinematic map.

The less you know about the plot the better, suffice to say that Elizabeth (Melanie Laurent) wakes up in a medical chamber, and has to figure out how she got there and why, before her dwindling oxygen supply runs out.

Although Aja's visual clues gives away some plot turns way too early, there is still much fun to be had, and this works better than the disappointing Ryan Reynolds film, Buried (2010).

Despite its one location setting, the film is slick and well-paced, zipping by quickly, indicating that the film-makers have successfully drawn the viewer in. Laurent does well in her confined setting, while Mathieu Amalric is perfectly cast as the voice of the A.I. central computer, M.I.L.O. The interaction between Elizabeth and M.I.L.O certainly reminded me of Donald Cammel's classic 1977 film, Demon Seed.

Although their bond isn’t close, the daughter finds herself in a challenging position trying to care for her.

Directed by Julian Dibley-Hall and starring Jules Allen and Iris Walshe-Howling, Betty is Allen’s fourth play after her very successful 2019 work Slipped Through the Cracks where she was described

by Australian playwright Hannie Rayson as 'a playwright with enormous potential'.

Equal billing for Tiara classic ■ Class galloper Savatiano and Tofane share equal billing for the Tattersalls Tiara to be run at Eagle Farm on June 26.

Savatiano is coming off an unplaced run in the Kingsford-Smith Cup over 1300 metres, where she finished well back, but had no luck in the run.

Prepared by top mentor James Cummings, the mare as we know is better than that and will bounce back.

Tofane, from the Mike Moroney camp in Victoria, ran a good second to Emerald Kingdom in the BRC Sprint, over 1350 metres, back on May 22. On her day she is smart.

On the next line is the Golden Slipper winner last year, in Funstar, prepared by one of the best in Chris Waller, and always gives of her best. You can't leave her out, especially at the odds of $10.

Next is the John Thompson trained Sydney mare, Sweet Deal, who ran a good second behind Exhilirates in the Helen Coughlan Stakes over 1200 metres at Eagle Farm, at her last outing.

The Queensland mare, Outback Barbie, always gives of her best for the Tony Gollan camp, and despite missing the place, she is always a chance in something like this.

Last year's One Thousand Guineas winner, Odeum, prepared by the combination of Mick Price and Mick Kent at Caulfield, is smart and the duo certainly know what it is all about.

She is very good on her day, at $13.

One that impressed me also, was the smart Nudge, who won the Magic Millions National classic for the mares over 1600 metres back on June 5.

In the powerful Chris Waller stable she will be right in this at the big odds of $14.

Then you have the good Victorian mare, Brooklyn Hustle, who won the Proud Miss Stakes over 1200 metres at Morphettvile, back on May 15.

She is a mare with Jason Warren and Dean Krongeld at Mornington, and has a bit of class about her. Like all races the barrier draw will play a big part in proceedings.

Congrats. Gary ■ With a half-century of devotion to the thoroughbred industry, and to one family, has earned Gary Fennessy of Lindsay Park, the supreme accolade in the 2021 Australian Stud and Stable Staff Awards.

An assistant trainer with the Lindsay Park team in Melbourne, Fennessy received top votes in the Dedication to Racing Category of the Awards, and was also named the winner of the overall Thoroughbred Excellence Award.

Joining Fennessy on the winner's list at the staging of the SSSA was David Hanratty from Yarradale Stud in Western Australia, who took out the Leadership Award.

Former star, Queensland apprentice Mandy

Radecker, who overcame severe injuries that ended her riding career, did not stop her from continuing to work with thoroughbreds.

Radecker was named winner of the Horsemanship Award.

In the Dedication to Breeding category, Steve Brien, the former Stud Manager at Twin Hills Stud, in NSW, was rewarded for dedicating his life to the business he loves, in the Thoroughbred Care and Welfare category.

In the Administration and Ancillary Services section, Cassandra Simmonds of Magic Millions, renowned as the best "can do" problem solver in the business, received well-deserved recognition.

While so many of those nominated, have given decades to the industry, the SSSA also recognises those who are just starting out.

In that category was Jack Cripps, who works for trainers, Tony and Calvin McEvoy in Melbourne.

For Gary Fennessy, known throughout the Industry as ‘Bim’, the Dedication to Racing and the Thoroughbred Excellence Awards are recognition not only for his 54 years of devotion to one employer, but to his value to the team he works with, and to the industry.

After beginning his working life with Lindsay Park's founder Colin Hayes in Melbourne in 1967, Fennessy is now working with a third generation of the Hayes family at Flemington.

The runner-up to Gary was John Brady, a strapper, stablehand, exercise rider, and just about everything there is in a racing stable, John has done it all.

Brady, 84, started with the legendary late Tommy Smith, before Tulloch Lodge became that name.

And after almost 70 years, he remains an employee of Smith's daughter, Gai Waterhouse, and her training partner, Andrew Bott. I have known Gary Fennessy for many years, a top man all round, in racing and out.

Well done, Gary, well deserved.

Flaw highlighted at Ararat

■ A flaw in the rating system was highlighted at the Ararat meeting on Sunday, June 6, when former Western Australian 8Y0 Tell All-Lilyann Joy gelding On My Oath registered his ninth success at start 142 when successful in the 2195 metre Thank You To All Our Volunteers Pace for NR up to 47 class.

Trained by the Kate Hargreaves/Alex Ashwood team, On My Oath, a prohibitive $1.30 favourite led throughout from the pole to easily account for Steam Rolled by 21.2 metres returning a mile rate of 1-59.6.

Trained at Kilmore by Brent Lilley, Aldebaran Zeus with Chris Alford in the sulky strode to the front from barrier two shortly after the start and after bowling along at his leisure, gave his rivals the slip approaching the home turn to score by 11 metres untouched from Isaac H (three back the markers) along the sprint lane, with Kyvalley Barney a stablemate of the winner (one/ one from 20 metres) third 2.9 metres back after easing three wide on the final bend. The rate 205.1.

■ Lilley scored a double as ex-Kiwi 5Y0 Waterloo Sunset-Gee Abby gelding Gil Favor had taken the 2150 metre De Bortoli Trotters Handicap.

Driven by Kilmore’s Aussie Mifsud for wife Julie, Gil Favor stepped cleanly from 20 metres, moving to occupy a one/one position as the race progressed with stablemate Our Spitfire leading after two false stars.

Angling three wide running into the home turn, Gil Favor ran home nicely to prevail by 2.3 metres in advance of Baltica along the sprint lane off the back of the pacemaker returning a mile rate of 2-03.6. Dizzysjet was third 3.2 metres away after racing exposed.

■ Avenel’s Wayne Potter landed the strangely named Trot Pace over 1690 metres with former NSW 4Y0 Sweet Lou-Lady Waratah mare Geraldton Wax in a mile rate of 1-58.5. Driven

by Josh Duggan, Geraldton Wax first up in Vic led out from gate three, but after being pressured by Shania Tee (gate six), was restrained to allow her to assume control.

In a truly run affair, Geraldton Wax came away from the inside approaching the home turn, proving too solid at the finish for Final Bow which gained inside runs from mid-field to go down by a neck in 1-58.3. Wild Imagination after switching down to the sprint lane on turning from well back was third a nose away.

■ Naneella part-owner/trainer Col Godden’s ex-Kiwi 5Y0 Sportswriter-Kamwood Cully mare Sport Mental first up in Oz was successful in the 1690 metre Flourish On McLennan Pace giving Duggan a double on the night.

Given a sweet trip from the pole trailing the pacemaker Tophut Johny (gate three), Sport Mental used the sprint lane to prevail by a head in 1-57.9 from a game death-seating Dealmaker and Better Day off a three wide trail last lap who was a half neck away third.

Bold move pays ■ Former Mildura trainer Terry Gange who has spent the majority of his life in Sunraysia before

making a bold move to shift to Bendigo a few weeks back, was thrilled with the performance of 4Y0 Modern Art-Caro Ella gelding Mister Jimaringle to win the Aviva Communities Bendigo Pace over 1650 metres at Lord’s Raceway Bendigo on Wednesday.

Driven to perfection by Charlton based Ryan Sanderson, Mister Jimaringle starting from the extreme draw pushed through to lob one/one shortly after the start as American Tiger (gate three) led.

Pushed back a spot when the favourite Magic Mike after being trapped three wide from outside the front line went forward to race exposed, Mister Jimaringle coming off an eye catching fifth to Blue Chip Delight a week earlier commenced a move in the final circuit and despite being forced four wide on the final bend, ran home best to gain the day by 1.9 metres over Magic Mike, with Shawami Lass third 7.1 metres back from mid-field. The mile rate 155.4.

■ Yabby Dam co-trainers Anton Golino and Jack McKinnon snared the Haras Des Trotteurs 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres with beautifully bred Andover Hall-La Coocaracha colt Webster Hall. Making only his second race appearance, Webster Hall driven by stable reinsman Jason Lee possied one/one from gate two on the second line but was quickly off and running to park outside the leader Yankee Lover which led from gate five. With Lee dictating the tempo, Webster Hall coasted to the front over the concluding stages to win virtually untouched from Yankee Lover by 4.5 metres in a rate of 2-04.7. Could Dowitharain (one/one) was third 4.4 metres away.

■ Bannockburn’s Geoff Webster combined with Greg Sugars to land the 2150 metre Gold Central Victoria 2Y0 Pace with Cobber, A Rocknroll Dance-Star Crossed gelding.

Leading out from gate two before being snookered three markers as both Our Christiano (gate four) and Mach Assassin (gate six) crossed, Cobber finished full of running along the sprint lane to prevail by a half neck in 2-01.3 over Mach Assassin and Pas Guarantee which came from last to be four wide on the home turn to be 4.5 metres away third.

■ Sutton Grange owners Clive and Rachel Henderson were in the winners stall at Bendigo when their honest Kiwi bred 6Y0 Big Jim-Walk Of Life gelding Azza trained by neighbor Leigh Graham greeted the judge in the Sandhurst Stockfeeds Pace over 2150 metres.

In what was the “drive of the night” by Tayla French, Azza (gate five) settled mid-field in the moving line as Starvin Marvin led from gate two.

With an even tempo being set, Tayla risked the arm and sent Azza forward in the first lap with a great turn of speed to cross Starvin Marvin and lead for the rest of the journey.
