SURGE IN LOCAL POKIES LOSSES

■ BRIMBANK CITY COUNCIL has called on the Victorian Government to take urgent action following a surge in losses from electronic gaming machines in December and January.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Ranka Rasic, has written to Melissa Horne, Minister of Consumer Affairs, Gaming and Liquor Regulation ,requesting that gaming venue operating hours be reduced to prevent further damaging losses.

“Daily losses in our municipality reached a staggering $474,914 during December 2020, representing a 23 per cent increase on the same time the previous year,” Cr Rasic said.

“The recently announced January statistics show an increase in losses of 26 per cent, or $2.9 million, compared to the same time last year. These are by far the largest increases of any Victorian municipality.

“Following health advice, gaming venues in the state initially re-opened on November 9with strict conditions, including maximum 16 hour daily operating hours, 10 person gaming room limits and 90 minute 'dwell time' restrictions.

“These measures contributed to a 42 per cent reduction in daily losses in November across Victoria, including an encouraging 35 per cent reduction in Brimbank.

“However, these restrictions were relaxed on November 23, paving the way for the most devastating consecutive monthly EGM losses ever recorded in Victoria.

“Data released by the Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation shows total losses of $14.7 million in December and $13.8 million in January across 15 local gaming venues, Brimbank’s two highest monthly losses since EGMs were introduced in 1992.

■ The State Government’s new travel voucher push was exhausted within four minutes last week.

Victorians rushed to secure 40,000 vouchers released through the Melbourne Travel Voucher Scheme on Friday morning (Mar. 12), with the allocation exhausted in just 240 seconds..

Martin Pakula, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, said the $200 vouchers would provide a major boost for tourism and hospitality businesses and workers across greater Melbourne, following the ongoing success of the Regional Travel Voucher Scheme.

■ Maybe it was just spin ... but Martin Foley, Health Minister, was keen to pass on the message on Friday (Mar. 12) that Premier Dan Andrews was up and about, and on his feet, following a nasty ball at a Mornington Peninsula B&B last week.

Yards to open ■ After sitting dormant for 15 years, the former Collingwood Technical School site on Johnston St, Collingwood is preparing to throw open its doors as Melbourne’s newest creative and community space, Collingwood Yards.

Danny Pearson, Minister for Creative Industries, welcomed the opening of the new creative hub which has transformed the historic school buildings into a creative precinct that provides a home for creative organisations, businesses and artists and a range of spaces for creative and community events.

The site at 35 Johnston Street Collingwood has been a place of creativity and learning since 1871 when it opened as the School of Design and School of Art. In 1912 the Collingwood Technical School opened, and the site remained a space for learning, as both a secondary school and a TAFE, until 2005.

VCAT by the bay

■ People in Melbourne’s south-east will have their cases heard and resolved faster, with the opening of a new Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal facility in Frankston.

Attorney-General Jaclyn Symes joined Frankston MLA Paul Edbrooke at the new facility in the heart of Frankston’s shopping and business district . The facility will help fast track disputes and clear the backlog of cases caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new VCAT site on Balmoral St will mainly be used to hear renting, consumer and guardianship matters – and also includes remote witness facilities to better support people affected by family violence.

Tunnel progress ■ The Metro Tunnel Project’s eastern entrance at South Yarra has been completed more than five months ahead of schedule with work now underway to connect the new structure with the project’s twin tunnels.

Acting Premier James Merlino and Minister for Transport Infrastructure, Jacinta Allan, visited the site, where crews have spent the past two years building the tunnel entrance .

Council News City protects coastline

● Cr Jonathan Marsden, Mayor, Hobsons Bay City ■ The future of Hobsons Bay’s iconic coastline and marine areas is in safe hands with the release of a draft report that will guide the management of these spaces over the next 10 years, according to Hobsons Bay Council.

At its meeting on Tuesday March 8, the Council released the draft Hobsons Bay Coastal and Marine Management Plan for public exhibition until Sunday, April 11..

“The draft plan, developed in accordance with the Marine and Coastal Act 2018 and Council’s Climate Change Action Plan, will provide strategic direction to protect Hobsons Bay’s coastline from erosion, storm surge and population growth, while enhancing it as a local asset,” said a Council representative.

“Management of coastal areas includes everything from mangroves, coastal swamps, saltmarsh, seagrass meadows, parklands, wetlands, waterways, beaches, flora, fauna and cultural sites.

“Developed in consultation with the community and numerous stakeholder groups and agencies over the past two years, the draft CMMP and its vision are based on more than 10,000 separate items of feedback.

“The actions delivered from the draft CMMP are grouped under the key objectives of the plan which include: acknowledge Traditional Owners’ rights, aspirations and knowledge; protect and enhance the marine and coastal environment; respect natural processes; strengthen resilience to climate change; encourage sustainable use and development; and promote ownership and collaboration.

“Projects outlined within the draft CMMP are divided into short term, medium term, long term and ongoing and include: risk assessments of current coastal infrastructure to determine their fit for purpose rating and if they are able to cope with changes in sea level; ensure ageing infrastructure is effectively maintained, upgraded or replaced; the implementation of nature-based solutions to marine management; link in with Council’s Urban Forrest Strategy to plant trees for shade and protection along the coastline; develop a marine and coastal citizen science monitoring program; and install interpretative signage.

“The management of the foreshore is a shared responsibility between Council and other agencies including the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Parks Victoria, Melbourne Water and the Port of Melbourne, in consultation with the Traditional Owners.”

Ruckus at Craigieburn ■ Hume Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating an aggravated burglary and assault at a Craigieburn restaurant.

An unknown man attended the Craigieburn Rd restaurant on a bicycle about 1am on Tuesday, February 23.

Investigators have been told the man approached the front counter and made demands for cash.

When a staff member refused, the man climbed over the counter and began punching and kicking him.

The offender pulled the victim towards the front counter while making his demands, but the victim managed to free himself and move away.

The man followed the victim before returning to the front counter a short time later.

He then stole cash from the register before fleeing the premises on his bicycle, travelling north on Dorchester St. The victim, a 24-year-old Bundoora man, was treated at the scene for non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators have released CCTV and images of a man who they believe can assist with their enquiries.

Theft at Mt Macedon TOOLS STOLEN FROM BUSINESS ■ Macedon Ranges Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the theft of tools from a business in Mount Macedon.

Police have been told offenders arrived at the Cameron Drive address just after 4am on Wednesday February 10 and gained entry by forcing a door lock.

The men accessed an external storeroom, stealing a water pump, pressure washer as well as other power tools and items.

Investigators have released images of males they believe can assist with their enquiries.

Local Briefs Man interviewed ■ Greensborough Highway Patrol members have interviewed a man in relation to a child struck by a vehicle in Epping on March 9.

A six-year-old boy exited a vehicle which was parked along Brush Rd about 8.30pm.

It is believed the boy walked to the front of the vehicle and onto the road when a car drove past the parked vehicle and allegedly struck the boy.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene and provided their details before leaving prior to Police arrival but enquiries revealed the details were incorrect.

The vehicle was located on private property in Eden Park on Friday afternoon.

The 25-year-old Epping man has been interviewed after handing himself into police on Wednedsday evening (Mar. 10).

He has been released and will be charged on summons with traffic related offences.

The siz-year-old Epping boy was later transported to hospital at the time with minor injuries and has since been released.

Hoppers damage ■ Wyndham Crime Investigation Unit officers are investigating criminal damage to a business in Hoppers Crossing last month.

A witness was inside a business on Graham Court about 5.30am on February 5 when they heard a loud cracking sound outside.

The witness found the upper floor of the building full of smoke then looked out the window and saw a car parked out the front on fire.

He went outside and found the businesses office area was also on fire so used a hose to put it out before calling emergency services.

The witness did not sight anyone, but a large jerry can was located at the scene.

Investigators have released images of a four door Mercedes sedan seen in the area and a man they believe can assist with their enquiries.

Murder charge

■ Homicide Squad detectives have charged a woman as part of their investigation into the alleged murder of Kon Kritikos in Coburg in November last year.

Investigators arrested the 45-year-old woman from Kurunjang.

She was interviewed by detectives and was subsequently charged with one count of murder.

The 45-year-old was due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday afternoon last week (Mar. 9). ● Police want to speak with this man.

Diversity in Brimbank ■ Cultural Diversity Week will be celebrated in Brimbank from March 21-28.

Cultural Diversity Week will feature a program of festivals and events across Brimbank that celebrate the diversity and community spirit in our city.

Cultural Diversity Week is held annually in March to coincide with the United Nations Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination and Harmony Day on March 21.

This year’s theme is “What does multicultural Victoria look like in 2030?”

The week will begin by celebrating Harmony Day with a no-charge family event at Westvale Community Centre on at 11am-2pm on Sunday (Mar. 21). Come and enjoy local performers, food tastings and kids activities. Bring something from home to add to our community ‘nest’ being built on the day.

The Bowery Theatre’s ‘Resonate’ program will be showcasing a curated program of online concerts featuring musicians, performers and artists from diverse backgrounds.

“Brimbank Council has been celebrating Cultural Diversity Week for more than a decade now – and this year’s no different with plenty of heart-warming events,” said Cr Ranka Rasic.

■ The Memorial Service to celebrate the life of Ivanhoe Grammar School's former Principal, Roderick D. Fraser, will be held at Ivanhoe Grammar School, The Ridgeway, Ivanhoe commencing at 4.30pm on Wednesday, March 24.

■ The Hume Global Learning CentreSunbury has been shortlisted for the 2021 Australian Library and Information Association Library Design Awards.

The HGLC-Sunbury was opened on December 16, 2019 and is the third facility in Hume City’s suite of Global Learning Centres, the first two being built in Broadmeadows and Craigieburn.

The HGLC-Sunbury cost $21.5million to deliver.

Hume Council contributed $18.5 million towards this project for the purchase of land, building design and construction as well as a new car park.

The Victorian Government contributed a further $3 million through its Growing Suburbs Fund.

‘Blew .124 at Greenvale’ ■ Police say that a man blew 0.124 following a collision in Greenvale on Thursday night (Mar. 11) Fawkner Highway Patrol officers were called to the collision, at the intersection of Mickleham Rd and Dellamore Boulevard, about 11.15pm where a red Nissan wagon had allegedly collided with a white Ford wagon.

As a result of the collision the Nissan wagon had flipped onto its side.

The driver, a 22-year-old Broadmeadows man, and his two passengers managed to remove themselves from the vehicle and were all uninjured.

The driver of the Ford wagon, a 26-year-old Greenvale man, was trapped inside his vehicle for some time until emergency services arrived.

He was later transported to hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

The Broadmeadows man underwent a preliminary breath test at the scene and was requested to undergo an evidentiary test where he is said to have returned a reading of 0.124.

He is expected to be charged with numerous traffic offences including reckless conduct endangering serious injury and drink driving.

■ Detectives from the Fraud and Extortion Squad charged a man on Thursday (Mar. 11) as part of an investigation into alleged property fraud totalling almost $395 million.

The 60-year-old man was charged with five counts of obtain financial advantage by deception.

He has been summonsed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on March 26.

The charges relate to finance that was allegedly fraudulently obtained between April and July 2019 when the man was employed at a Melbourne-based property company.

Police will allege the finance was purported to be for the purchase of Melbourne apartment buildings and their planned lease.

Hospital maters

■ The usual weekly mccting of the executive committee of the Footscray and District Hospital was postponed this week to enable members to attend a meeting of sportsmen held in the pavilion at the Yarraville Cricket Ground on Wednesday night to discuss means of assisting the hospital movement.

Mr R. Bell was voted to the chair, and he briefly sketched the history of the movement from its inception. ● A man is expected to front court after crashing his car while allegedly almost five times the legal alcohol limit in Tootgarook on Thursday.

Officers were called to Burdett St following reports a blue BMW sedan crashed into a tree about 7pm.

Upon arrival, the car was abandoned.

■ Hobsons Bay’ performing arts program Arts at Your Doorstep returns in 2021, with iconic Indigenous Australian singer songwriter Archie Roach setting the scene in style.

Roach will be performing his Tell Me Why show, a lyrical retelling of his life story of joy, pain and hope to an intimate setting at Williamstown Town Hall on April 5, with tickets now on sale. This performance will be part of Roach’s last national tour.

Theatre lovers can immerse themselves in The Magnolia Tree, an emotionally-charged performance that tackles family secrets, death and dying with some tough decisions to be made, ultimately, the ending and final decision will be up to the audience. It will play at Altona Theatre on Thursday, May 8.

Meanwhile the one and only Damian Callinan brings his stage adaptation of the 2018 film, The Merger, to the Williamstown Town Hall on Thursday April 29.

The show explores the decline of a cash-strapped Aussie Rules rural footy club and the recruitment of refugees to keep the club viable. The Merger is also on the 2021 VCE list, with school bookings available.

Woods St space re-opens ■ Woods Street Art Space is emerging from the COVID pandemic with a new program for 2021, running through to July.

After a year with limited access to celebrating the arts, the return of the Woods Street Art Space signals an important step in regaining a space which provides important social connection and opportunities for cultural learning in Hobsons Bay. From children’s and family art sessions, to a showcase of Polynesian culture, the all-encompassing program is sure to offer something for everyone.

The program explores sustainability and the local environment through workshops, including the Habitat Gardens initiative to engage households with native flora and fauna and recycled couture sculptures presented by designer Anna Kolusniewski and Laverton P-12 students.

“Hobsons Bay is really proud of its reputation as a creative city and I was privileged to see the old post office become the Woods Street Arts Space and to be at its opening with Cr Briffa and my dad and former Councillor John Hogg,” Cr Diana Grima said. “Having the Woods Street Art Space back gives us an opportunity to celebrate the amazing culture here in a really central Laverton location.”

Meth in the 1920s ■ One day lately, in a mean street, near the dockyard of a great port, an elderly woman was seen dancing about the pavement, singing, and behaving generally as it she were as drunk as possible. A group of her neighbours at the corner, however, tabooed the suggestion. They simply said that the oilshop across the way had got a good supply of methylated spirits that week - as if that fact explained everything. And it did. The elderly woman who jumped and shouted in such mad glee was a methylated spirits maniac - a devotee of one of the very worst and most demoralising of all forms of drinking and doping.

At St Albans ■ A meeting of the St Albans Cricket Club was held in the hall on Monday last, the retiring president (Cr. F C. Stenson) being elected to the chair.

Mr. A. G. Dickson, junr., was re-elected secretary and treasurer. It was decided to enter into a district competition, if the conditions were suitable, and Mr. A. Dickson. senr., and Mr. J. Perry were appointed as delegates to attend a meeting at Rockbank, and report to a meeting to be held on 29th inst. All interested are asked to attend a working bee on the ground this afternoon.

Footscray C.C. ■ The annual meeting of the Footscray Cricket Club was held at the Mechanics' Institute on Thursday night, and, in spite of the inclement weather, there was a good attendance of members. Mr. T. J. Evans presided in the absence of the president, Mr D. Mitchell.

The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. The club is in a sound financial position, and begins the new season with a credit balance of £19. L. Jonsson headed the list of batting averages for the first eleren, with 27.5 runs per innings. The bowling average was secured by V. Mason, 12.2. In the second eleven A. AlIaway; 19.46, wa sthe most successful batsman, and T. Watkins, 6.44, proved the most effective trundler.

Under the circumstances football was impossible, and it is regrettable that so important a game should take place under such wretched conditions, The rain adversely affected the attendance. Only about 9000 persons braved the elements and the gate re ceipts amounted to £345.

Footy outrage

■ The decision of the Association with regard. to the Footscray-North Melbourne match was received with disgust throughout the western sub urbs, especiallyiwhen it became known that the. persistent demands of the Footscray delegates to hear the evidence of. the boundary and goal umpires were ignored.

There is no doubt that Considine marked the ball after the bell sounded, and had the Association really wished they could havehad all the evidence they needed to establish this fact.

Of the thousands of people. on the ground. probably onlyl one man was so unfortunate as not to hear the bell, and it is remarkable that tlhat one man should be the umpire, especially as he was quite close to the timekeepers when they rang the bell: The bell having sounded whilst the ball was in the air, it was dead when Considine took the mark, and Hurley's decision was coisequcently ultra vires: He then had no more right to award a mark than the most casual onlooker had. .The obvious duty of the Association was to establish the fact and act accordingly. To say the umpire is sole judge of the moment when the.bell sounds, and to hide bchind this quibble for. the sake of getting another. “gate," whefi there is no doubt that the umpire was in error, is a miserable subterfuge.

Henry H. Twist ■ Sincere and widespread regret was felt tlroughout Footscray on Wednesday when it was .learnt that Mr. Henry H. Twist had passed away that day, after an illness oftwelve moinths duration.

Mr. Twist came to Footscray six years ago to teach at the Hyde-street State school.

He. was one of the best known teachers in the department, and prior to coming to the metropolis spent many years in the country, chiefly, in Maryborough and Stawell.

Thousands of scholars have been influenced by his ability as a teacher and his sterling, character as a man.

Of quiet, studious liabits, he was neither pdantic nor impatientofignorance in others.

He was of- a kindly nature;.ahd: took a deep interest in boys and their doi ngs, and was always eager to assist in any move ment that had for its object the improvement of young people.

Mr: Twist was a prominent member of. the Presbyteriaii Church; and was leader of the Young Men's Bible Class. Much of his spare time was devoted to church and Sunday school work,-and in these circles he will be sadly niissed.

The deceased was 57 years of age, leaves a widow and a grown up son aand daughter, and to them the symiipathy of a wide circle of friends is extended.

One absentee ■ Although councillors endeavoured to infuse a certain amount of life into the meeting on Monday night, their efforts were only partially successful, and the meeting was a very quiet and uninteresting one. Cr. Pearce was theo nly absentee.

Thistle Club ■ Although the weather did its best to spoil things, the concert held by the Footscray Thistle Club in the Victor Theatre on Thursday night in aid of the Footscray and District Hospital proved entirely successful in every respect. In spite of steady rain which'began to fall shortly after 7 o clock, there. was a large attendance, and the. programlmne was enjoyd tohe full.

Dog dies at Meadows ■ A three-year old greyhound Crackerjack Kane fractured his right hock and tibia after a collision at the first turn, claims the Coalition for the Protection of Greyhounds.

He was euthanised following the running of Race 6, said Coalition National President Dennis Anderson.

He said that CPG research showed the Meadows ranked as the fifth worst track in Victoria last year, with six deaths and 314 injuries.

Mr Anderson said four other tracks had more deaths – Bendigo (14 deaths), Warragul (10) Ballarat (11) and Cranbourne (10).

Mr Anderson said The Meadows death happened in an eight-dog race, while racing industry research in 2017 showing six-dog races cut death and injury rates by 50 per cent.

“Since 2017, Greyhound Racing Victoria has failed to implement six-dog racing.

“While gambling giants like Tabcorp say they want the highest standards of animal welfare to be observed by industry partners such as GRV, we still don’t have six-dog racing. It's the norm in the UK because it reduces deaths and injuries,” he said.

“Smaller fields like six dogs pay fewer wins, so when money’s involved integrity always goes out the window,” Mr Anderson said.

Residents can drop-off TVs, computers, electronic appliances, whitegoods, furniture (in good

condition), mattresses, bicycles (in good condition), homewares, clothes and linen.

Residents cannot bring asbestos, construction waste, chemicals, biological waste, sharps, broken monitors, fluorescent tubes and smoke detectors.

There is a maximum of 8 items per household. Only cars, small vans or cars with trailers will be able to drop-off items, no trucks or commercial quantities allowed.

Erratic driving at St Albans ■ Police have arrested a woman following an alleged erratic driving incident through multiple north western suburbs on Wednesday night (Mar. 10).

Officers were called to a Cairnlea Drive, Cairnlea address just after 7pm to reports of a woman asleep inside a vehicle.

Registration checks on the black Ford Fiesta confirmed it had been stolen from a Maribyrnong shopping centre car park on Saturday, March 6.

Police attempted to intercept the vehicle however it allegedly drove off at a fast rate of speed.

Police on the ground received support by the Air Wing who assisted in locating the vehicle, which continued to drive at a fast rate of speed and on occasion travelled onto the footpath to manoeuvre around traffic.

The vehicle was tracked to an address in Marsden Crescent, St Albans where a 51-yearold Moonee Ponds woman was arrested at the scene.

A search of the vehicle allegedly located further stolen property including two sets of stolen number plates.

The Moonee Ponds woman has been charged with 13 charges including theft of motor vehicle, fail to stop upon police direction and reckless conduct endangering life.

Directed by Adriana Trigiani, Then Came You is a quirky rom com with lots of different twists and turns before it gets to the expected happy ending.

American Annabel (Kathie Lee Gifford) is grieving the loss of a much-loved husband (whose ashes she keeps in a laminated chocolate box) and she realises she must let go of old memories and create new ones.

So she decides that a spell as a guest in a Scottish castle operating as a guesthouse is just the ticket.

Scottish lord of the manor Howard (Craig Ferguson) has never quite recovered from losing his wife 30 years ago, but seems to now be ready to embark on marriage again with his wife's best friend Claire (Elizabeth Hurley), but is running his family's castle as a guesthouse to try to hang onto it, as upkeep doesn't come cheaply.

Chalk and cheese protagonists Annabel and Howard follow a twisted road before romance seems on the cards, and their quest is helped by a mysterious connection with Howard's elderly aunt - a fine and insightful cameo from 88-year-old Scottish actor Phyllida Law (aka Emma Thompson's mum).

Gifford and Ferguson have both been very successful TV talk hosts in America, so it's a pleasure to see them wear their other hats as actors. Ferguson also has echoes of George Clooney's good looks, which adds to his charm factor.

Both Gifford and Ferguson are well on the other side of 50, so it's refreshing to see a rom com about mature people, rather than the usual young and beautiful types.

Gifford also wrote the screenplay and the songs as well as being one of the producers.

Both Gifford and Ferguson strike a good blow for the cause of older people having just as much right to romance and happiness as the younger generation.

Then Came You is a feel-good film with a lot of quirky charm, Scottish humour, and superb scenery. A great pick me up in a time when the only way we can travel overseas is via the silver screen!

Confidential Talk is cheap, gossip is priceless

Umbilical Brothers ● Shyama Sasidharan.

■ After a year of lockdowns, the team at Sangam were keen to showcase some new works created by South Asian classical-contemporary performers.

To this end their sponsors including MAV with guidance by BlakDance allowed them to stage an exciting and varied program at Dancehouse. The artists were mentored by Priyadarsini Govind, Mavin Khoo and Dr Chandrabhanu.

Program One began with a video performance by Philadelphia based artist Kasi Aysola’s work, Eyes. The rhythmic music and dance movement explored varied perspectives of the God who falls from grace, but needed more to complete the narrative.

The second piece was a duet by Shyama Sasidharan and Divya Shreejit Kumar, entitled Melbourne Rasa. This piece focused on the struggle both politically and emotionally to belong as a migrant. This was particularly well acted showing the cultural bubbles people enter to protect their family.

Lastly, Rukshikaa Elankumaran’s solo piece Amma: The Loss of our Motherland showcased her strong dance style and brilliant story-telling. This work was based on the Tamil Eelam liberation struggles in Sri Lanka and explored the emotions felt after fleeing the genocide.

Program Two began with Sooraj Subramaniam’s video work, Nimbus. This contemporary solo piece was mesmerising with the fluidity of his arm, hand and body movements simulating the formations of nimbus clouds. Exceptional videography, lighting and costuming enhanced this work.

Shriraam Theivendran’s solo work, Sacred Sensuality, was a little long but his storytelling was compelling. The live musicians and vocalists enhanced the ritualistic movements. Shriraam’s sense of syncopated rhythm was outstanding, as was his physical strength.

The final performer was Raina Peterson presenting Maya. This experimental work explored Hindu conceptions of the self, and the distribution of the elixir of life. While showing emotion and lustful exuberance, the work generally lacked energy and movement.

The programs were enhanced by the lighting design of Jack Wilkinson and sound engineer, Nishta Kumar.

2 comedy shows

■ David Massingham brings two comedy shows to this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

The first is his new solo sketch comedy show David Massingham's Little Sketch book of Horrors, described by Massingham as "a big silly interactive spooky show channeling a little Vincent Price horror", playing at Tasma Terrace from March 26 - April 7.

The second show is Murder Village, an improvised Agatha Christie murder mystery that enjoyed a sellout run during the 2018 Fringe Festival, and returns to a sequel season at The Butterfly Club from April 12.

No two shows will be the same. The audience will vote for each show's murder weapon, victim and murderer by secret ballot, giving mystery lovers a chance to have their say while still enjoying trying to solve the crime themselves.

■ Comedy duo The Umbilical Brothers present their new show The Distraction from March 25-April 18 at Fairfax Studio, Arts Centre Melbourne.

This time the Umbilicals merge comedy and physical live stage performance with cinema and the big screen in their new show .

Shane Dundas of the Umbilicals notes, "David and I have always imagined movie-like visuals when creating and performing. This time you get to see what we're imagining, right there on screen in real time. We'll be wrestling with live special effects. It's going to be pretty freaky."

Dumtectives in Cirque Noir ■ Dummies Corp presents a new circus comedy for adults titled Dumtectives in Cirque Noir from April 6-18 at The Famous Spiegeltent, Arts Centre, Melbourne as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

In Dumtectives in Cirque Noir, circus is laced into the genre of Film Noir, and the show is said to take noir’s murder mystery tradition, flipping it on its head with a "slapstick kick".

Set in a by-gone era of cheap dames and dirty dicks, Dumtectives in Cirque Noir is promoted as having "all the 1940s whodunnit cheek of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? with an MA15+ rating."

Starring Amy Nightingale-Olsen, Thomas McDonald and Leigh Rhodes, the Dumtectives are on a mission: uncover the murderer, navigate the seductions of a (marionette) femme fatale, and avoid bitter betrayal.

Outright chaos ensues, with aerial adventures, knife juggling, car chases and even interrogations of suspicious looking audience members.

The show is co-directed by Dummies Corp founder Jamie Bretman and seven-time Green Room nominee Clare Bartholomew.

Jesus, Queen of Heaven ■ The Gospel According to Jesus, Queen of Heaven will be presented from April 30 to May 8 at Theatre Works, St Kilda as part of the 2020 Midsumma Festival.

Directed by Kitan Petkovski with Kristen Smyth in the iconic role, the play questions inclusivity with a transgender playwright and performer at the forefront.

The show combines theatre with storytelling and ritual to produce a reflection on the life of Jesus, a transgender one, and imagines Christianity’s message of love extending to embrace all those traditionally excluded because of their sexuality or gender.

Written and first performed by Scottish playwright Jo Clifford at Glasgow’s Tron Theatre in 2009, her play attracted full houses, as well as 500 demonstrators outside the theatre.

Places To Go The Rivers Sing

■ TarraWarra Museum of Art will be the venue for the opening presentation of The Rivers Sing, a monumental sonic artwork which celebrates the Birrarung (Yarra River) and the Maribyrnong River.

The Rivers Sing has been commissioned for the inaugural Rsiing Festival. Taking the place of the Melbourne International Arts Festival and White Night Melbourne, Rising is a major cultural event for the Asia Pacific Region created by a diverse team of local, national and international artists and curators.

With melodies written by YortaYorta/Yuin composer and soprano, Deborah Cheetham, and voiced by a wide range of singers from the Victorian music community, The Rivers Sing, is a new work created in collaboration with Melbourne artists Thomas Supple and Byron J. Scullin. The work will take place as a recurring public intervention over Melbourne skies.

The first presentations of The Rivers Sing will be staged in the landscape around TarraWarra Museum of Art at sunset on the evenings of Saturday March 27 and Sunday March 28, coinciding with the opening of the TarraWarra Biennial 2021: Slow Moving Waters exhibition.

The sound will reverberate from an array of specially-designed, cutting edge speakers arranged on seven sites around the grounds of TarraWarra.

Both The Rivers Sing presentation and the TarraWarra Biennial 2021: Slow Moving Waters exhibition share a deep regard for environmental custodianship by honouring waterways and drawing attention to the connections between water, Country and people.

“The Rivers Sing seeks to reframe our relationship with the two major rivers that pass through Melbourne: the Birrarung and Maribyrnong. Deborah Cheetham is the source of inspiration. Beginning with her own connection to our waterways, combined with language and knowledge granted by Boonwurrung and Woiwurrung Elders,” explains artist Byron J. Scullin.

The title for the TarraWarra Biennial 2021, Slow Moving Waters, comes from the translation of the local Woiwurrung word ‘tarrawarra’, after which the Museum, and its surrounding area of Wurundjeri Country in the Yarra Valley is named.

TarraWarra Biennial 2021: Slow Moving Waters guest curator Nina Miall says the exhibition takes shape around two related cues: the idea of slowness, and the winding course of the Birrarung (Yarra River), which flows south of the Museum grounds.

The TarraWarra Biennial 2021 exhibition features new works by 25 artists from across the country that explore ideas of slowness, deceleration, drift and the elasticity of time.

Director of TarraWarra Museum of Art, Victoria Lynn says, “The Rivers Sing presentations have been timed to coincide with the TarraWarra Biennial 2021: Slow Moving Waters exhibition, given their shared interests in the cycles of nature, the rich Indigenous culture and history of the Yarra Valley, and the translation of Tarrawarra as 'slow moving waters.”

"Taking its cue from the winding Birrarung (Yarra River) located nearby the Museum, the exhibition builds on the very special atmosphere of TarraWarra. A retreat for the imagination, Slow Moving Waters invites our audiences to slow down, consider alternative tempos, listen deeply, and immerse themselves in subtle, minimal and evocative works by twenty-five artists from around Australia," Ms Lynn said.

It was a great pleasure to catch up with Michael Tobin, who is the Director of Tobin Brothers Funerals, which celebrate lives.

All about the next poll ■ Former Democratic Hawaii Rep. Tulsi Gabbard equated being in Congress to being in high school during a recent interview with Megyn Kelly.

Gabbard said on Kelly's podcast The Megyn Kelly Show that there are "well-intentioned members" from both parties in Congress who want to work together but that ultimately partisan interests corrupt genuine intent.

"If that is not in line with what the party wants, then you have threats of, if you do this, we're not going to back you up with any money or support in your re-election," Gabbard said.

"If you do this, you're not going to get the committee you want or you'll get yanked off the committee that you're on If we're being serious it's like high school."

Gabbard said after being sworn into Congress, newly elected representatives were given a brief orientation and were able to spend time with fellow representatives.

However, representatives were soon "separated into camps."

"Democrats went here and started meeting in different places," Gabbard told Kelly. "Republicans met in different places, and very directly the narrative and the directive was kind of set from the leadership that hey, this is about winning the next election."

Gabbard said members were told to limit their work with politicians from the other side of the political aisle out of fear that the opposing side would use bipartisan-passed bills to win the next election.

Coffee alters the brain

■ There are those who believe drinking caffeine too late will keep them awake all night. Others, however, feel their brain just can't function unless they have a hot cup of coffee in them.

A new study may be unravelling both of those beliefs. Researchers from the University of Basel say regular caffeine consumption does not disrupt sleep quality, but it can alter the structure of the brain connected to memory.

Whether it's coffee, cola, or energy drinks, study authors say caffeine is the world's most consumed psychoactive substance.

Their findings reveal that even consuming it for a short period of time can change the volume of gray matter in the brain.

Being a stimulant, caffeine helps most people who drink it to feel more alert and awake.

However, consuming too much before bed has been linked to symptoms of insomnia. No matter how it happens, lack of sleep is never good for the brain or the body.

■ Hasbro's animatronic Baby Yoda won the Toy Association's Toy of the Year award. But the real winners?

Toy companies. Hasbro and Mattel both reported strong earnings this week that reflected the broader industry's 16 per cent increase in sales in 2020.

"There is no question that the pandemic drove demand with kids staying at home. With the lockdowns, parents spent money on their children," Mattel's CEO, Ynon Kreiz, said.

Another symbol of the COVID era, Mattel's online sales grew more than 50 per cent and now account for more than a third of its global retail sales.

Two categories boosted the industry. Board games: Hasbro's game sales jumped 15 per cent last year, led by Operation, Monopoly, and a Baby Yoda-themed version of Monopoly. Hasbro also acquired Magic: The Gathering, a card game with a cult following that's grown during the pandemic, especially online. Uno cards sold well for Mattel.

Dolls: Mattel's doll sales grew 13 per centto $709 million, led by Barbies, American Girl and Star Wars plushies yes, featuring Baby Yoda.

Back to Nature ■ Will two hours in the park become the next 10,000 steps?

As people spend more time indoors, a mountain of scientific research says spending time in nature is critical to health and increases longevity. That means being in fresh air, under trees and away from cars and concrete on a regular basis. And, no, the Peloton doesn't count. "There's an urgent need emerging in science and at the gut level to increase the nature experience. This field is just exploding," says Gretchen Daily, a professor of environmental science at Stanford University.

The benefits have been clear to scientists for some time, but the pandemic has made the matter more urgent. The physical and emotional toll the virus has taken, especially in urban areas with little green space, has galvanised doctors, researchers and others to tap into nature's therapeutic effects.

■ It's no secret: Straight guys often use pets to get dates. And it works. There's even science that backs it up. But according to a new study, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, dudes need to ditch their cats in their dating profiles if they are really serious about securing a Valentine. Sounds brutal. But again, we're just looking at the science, folks.

The study featured in the peer reviewed journal Animals and (amazingly) titled "Not the Cat's Meow? The Impact of Posing with Cats on Female Perceptions of Male Date ability" found that heterosexual males posing with a cat in their photos were "less masculine when holding the cat, higher in neuroticism, agreeableness, and openness; and less dateable" by more than 1300 women.

An expert at Match.com even backed it up. Rachel DeAlto, Match's chief dating expert, said that straight men had a 5 per cent lower chance of landing a "like" on their site when it was revealed that they had a cat. Straight women with cats were 7 percent less likely.

The scientists behind the study admitted that their findings were more than a little limited. Both guys are white, thin, college-aged, and clearly preppy. They plan to do a broader study representing a more "globalised skin tone" in the future to ensure that it's really the cat women are turned off by, not suitor himself. Still, the online dating evidence isn't doing felines any favours. According to the article, dogs give straight and gay men a 20 per cent higher chance on average for scoring a "like" and women a 3 per cent higher likelihood.

In response to the statement, "There is a free exchange of views in this company; people are not afraid to say what they really think," only 51 per cent of Times employees responded in the affirmative.

Magazine ■ Jackie Clancy was one of the most unique comedians to appear on television and radio in Australia.

He worked with some of our legendary television personalities including Graham Kennedy and Bert Newton.

Jackie Clancy died on November 15,1987, exactly 10 years after the passing of his radio partner Bill Acfield.

Jackie Clancy was born in Leeds, England, and during his teenage years he became a boxer.

He enlisted in the Army during WWII and was taken prisoner during the Dunkirk invasion in 1941.

He escaped from a POW camp in Germany and was awarded a Military Medal after the war.

In 1951 he was hired as a boxing instructor at the Billy Butlin's Holiday Camp at Filey, North Yorkshire.

Jackie soon had "stars in his eyes" and joined in the entertainment show playing Captain Blood for the children. He worked onstage in sketches with Des O'Connor. Others who got their start Butlin's Holiday Camps included Cliff Richard, Charlie Drake and Dave Allen.

He met his wife Margot, who was an entertainer at the holiday camp and the couple married. In 1956 Jackie and Margot migrated to Australia.

Bert Newton managed to get him a job at Channel Nine and on Jackie's first appearance he retold the same joke that had got him sacked from Channel Seven.

Jackie suffered with depression as a result of his wartime experiences. I loved his sketches the sad clown with the long hair always the underdog.

He was an original stand up comedian with great material. In the 1970s turned to radio and teamed with Bill Acfield on 3UZ and they were a

ratings smash. We all loved Ackie and Jackie.

Jackie and Bill wrote the scripts for their show and they adapted the lyrics of Sweet Sorrow for their closing song Don't sorrow, when we say goodbye, don't start feeling blue.

Future use of C3 space under review

Update on c3 Contemporary Art Space: Last year responding to the necessary public health restrictions required to manage COVID-19, Abbotsford Convent put c3 Contemporary Art Space and its program into hibernation from late April 2020.

In navigating the ongoing negative impacts of the pandemic on the Convent's operations the Convent has come to the difficult unavoidable decision to close c3.

Anna Schwartz Gallery The Wind Blows Where It will The Anna Schwartz Gallery is presenting a new work by acclaimed Australian artist Vivienne Shark Le Witt in the exhibition The Wind Blows Where It Will, which is the artist's first exhibition in more than a decade.

The exhibition will encompass multiple series, each reflecting upon history and allegorical notions relating to covetousness and its opposite poverty.

This includes 'the works of mercy', 'the works of hands'. And 'the unity of opposites'. Primarily executed in water-based paint on linen or Hessian, the works are materially raw but rich in contemplative expression.

Stars: * * ½ Review: An African monarch learns he has a long-lost son in the United States and must return to America to meet this unexpected heir and build a relationship with his son.

Not so much a sequel as a remake of the 1988 box-office hit "Coming To America," this long-awaited return 33 years later of Eddie Murphy as the reigning King of Zamunda, Akeem, is primarily a retread of the "Best of Moments" of the original film, with little new on offer and lacking the spark, bite or risqué zest driven by his first journey to the United States which hit the zeitgeist of audiences in 1988, however, for all its overpowering sense of déjà vu throughout, there are, albeit fleeting, genuine moments of fun to be had.

The majority of the original cast return for this much more studio bound romp, all led by Eddie Murphy as the soon to be King whose performance doesn't quite reach the level of allure or magnetism of the character the first time around, but is surrounded with more lively performances by Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, Wesley Snipes, Shari Headley, Jermaine Fowler, Tracy Morgan, KiKi Layne, Jon Amos, and a few more than welcome surprises along the way, including, as in the original film, a homage to Eddie Murphy's 1983 hit "Trading Places."

Well made, with some spectacular set and costume design, you can't escape throughout the noticeably lacking uniquely firm and madcap hand of director John Landis, who helmed the first one, which is always worth a revisit, but nonetheless, it is a pleasant retread with some gold nuggets in there, only this time they're far and few between, and to quote a line from "Coming 2 America:" "American cinema is the best, the best?" "What do we have besides superhero shit, remakes and sequels to old movies nobody asked for?" Point taken.

Stars: *** Review: Academy Award winning actor Roberto Benigni stars as Geppetto, a struggling woodcarver who creates a puppet, but something magical happens as the puppet begins to talk, walk and eat like any young boy, so Geppetto calls him Pinocchio and brings him up as his son.

First filmed as an animated feature in Italy in 1936 and followed by the Walt Disney animated classic in 1940, in this new imagining of the iconic classic, co-writer, producer and director Matteo Garrone returns to the authentic roots of the Pinocchio story with a more faithful adaptation to author Carlo Collodi's masterpiece of Italian literature first published in 1883, and the result is a film of many outstanding qualities that is leaps and bounds ahead of the disastrous 2002 live action version written, directed and starring Roberto Benigni, mainly due to interference by the studio Miramax.

Roberto Benigni is perfectly cast as the poor and caring Geppetto, bringing with it a stellar performance of great emotional empathy and understanding, a joy to watch for every moment of his screen time, and a special mention must go to Federico Ielapi as Pinocchio, and even though he at times seems ungrateful and selfish, it is this naive representation of the wooden boy that carries us on his journey with genuine interest and emotional connection, and of course surrounded by a myriad of idiosyncratic characters and creatures along the way.

Breathing part Jean Cocteau (1946s Beauty and the Beast), part Terry Gilliam part Guillermo del Toro, "Pinocchio" is filled with breathtaking cinematography, a beautifully textured look and spellbinding make-up, production and costume design, all combining to bring this celebrated adventure of a world seen through the eyes of a child, a dark, a devilish wicked and even disturbing journey that is unsentimental and without cliché, a scary, grotesque, funny, poignant, and even though at times emotionally and structurally uneven, this is still nonetheless a journey well worth going on, a sweet and sour multi-layered fantasy-fable that the great Walt Disney would not have approved.

Footnote: A stop motion version of "Pinocchio" is being revived yet again by filmmakers Robert Zemeckis and Guillermo del Toro with Tom Hanks.

Rourke’s Reviews ● Daniel Kaluuya is electrifying as Black Panther chairman Fred Hampton, in the powerful new film, Judas And The Black Messiah, now showing in cinemas.

Judas and the Black Messiah

■ (MA). 125 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Compelling, energetic look at Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), the chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and FBI informant William O'Neal (LaKeith Stanfield), who infiltrated the group and helped the agency bring about the spellbinding leader's violent downfall in 1969.

This enthralling drama, co-written and directed by Shaka King, displays the same kind of passion and provocation seen in the films of Spike Lee (Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X), but never feels like a hollow imitation. Kaluuya (Get Out, Widows, Queen & Slim) is outstanding, delivering a performance that should earn him an Oscar, and is well supported by LaKeith Stanfield and Dominique Fishback, the latter playing Hampton's girlfriend, Deborah Johnson.

The late 60s era is vividly brought to life, and the powerful result confirms what a genuine disappointment Aaron Sorkin's tepid Trial Of The Chicago 7 truly was.

This would make a great companion piece with Steve McQueen's brilliant Small Axe series.

Bong Joon-ho Collection ■ (MA). Available on Blu-ray March 17.

In the wake of the incredible and much-deserved Oscar success with his outstanding satirical thriller Parasite, director Bong Joon-ho gets the deluxe, box set treatment, thanks to Madman Entertainment.

This impressive six-disc set contains most of Bong's critically acclaimed body of work, including his feature film debut Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), along with Memories Of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), Mother (2009), and of course, Parasite (2019).

The set also has three of the director's short films. A must-have addition for any true movie fan's collection (can someone now please release his 2017 film Okja on blu-ray?).

Pinocchio

■ (M). 125 minutes. Available on DVD March 17.

Those expecting a gentle, lighthearted children's film similar to Disney's classic 1940 animated feature may be in for a shock with this new incarnation, but those wanting imaginative cinema with something substantial at its core, will be richly rewarded.

The basic story is the same; poor woodcarver Geppetto (nicely played by Roberto Benigni) creates a wooden boy named Pinocchio, who magically comes to life, and subsequently goes on a number of adventures, some of which prove treacherous.

Co-writer/director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Dogman, Reality) has gone back to the original novel by Carlo Collodi, which was more of a Grimms fairy tale, so the bleaker aspects return, with incidents and confrontations proving a threat to Pinocchio both physically and morally.

Garrone, whose films regularly examined both the flaws of people and the problematic social/justice structures they have to live under, fills the famous tale with similar layers, using various escapades and events to explore themes such as poverty, ineffectual government bureaucracy, exploitation of the vulnerable, and a lack of opportunity for the poor which leads to undesirable outcomes.

Garrone deftly mixes the magical with the satirical, and with the help of an outstanding technical crew, gives the film such an exquisitely golden hue, astutely making the darker elements which swim underneath that fairytale imagery all the more effective.

The effects, whether practical or computer-animated, are firstrate. The cast are uniformly terrific, with faces that wouldn't seem outof-place in a Fellini film.

The two hour running time is filled both with care and conviction.

Those who remember Benigni's own disastrous adaptation in 2002, and feel hesitant to approach another variation due to his involvement, can be rest-assured that this is infinitely superior in every way imaginable.

Garrone's Pinocchio is definitely one of the best imaginings of the tale to date.

Scattered ■ A new five-track EP from Melbourne singer-songwriter Gary Leonard Hammond has been released and is available on all digital outlets.

Scattered was written in Far North Queensland in January this year.

The inspiration came from daily visits to the local coffee shop and whatever came into my head, says Gary.

The recording itself was then completed over a two week period back home in his own studio.

Bubbles from the Yarra Valley ■ John Rozentals looks at some excellent Champagne-related bubblies from the Yarra Valley.

So, what do leading producers of Champagne do when sales of their favourite drop edge the limit of their particular appellation?

They venture to the New World, to seek out opportunies untramelled by niceties such as appellation.

Hence leading Victorian producer of sparking wines, Yarrabank, is a joint venture, first created in 1993, between one of the original producers of the Yarra Valley, Yering Station, and a champagne producer, Veuve A Devaux.

Of course both sides of the operation will tell you that the motives were purely altruistic. They would, wouldn't they?

Hence the Yarrabank website proclaims: "The venture reflects the committed vision of Champagne Devaux president Laurent Gillet, to produce a benchmark Australian sparkling wine.

Combining centuries old tradition from Champagne with a contemporary approach to winemaking."

And the website continues: "Since 1846 Champagne Devaux has only used Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes to create their distinctive style.

“They have brought their expertise to Yarrabank to produce wines with a perfect balance of ripeness and acidity to create their own unique Yarrabank style."

One of the latest Australians to benefit from an exchange of knowledge is Willy Lunn, Yarrabank's winemaker.

And the wines? They're magnifique, of course.

WINE REVIEWS: Yarrabank 2013 Cuvée ($38): blended from two of Champagne's main varieties, chardonnay and pinot noir, this is one of the ultimate aperitif styles.

Enjoy it while standing around and elegantly chatting, dropping a few morsels of sushi or other delicate hors d'oeuvres. Look for citric acidity and notes of custard apple.

Yarrabank NV Creme de Cuvée ($38): There's a touch of sweetness to this wine and a creamy palate, so it will stand up to foods such as lobster.

In flavour terms the winemakers suggest you look for strawberry, stone fruit, citrus and pastry characters. Who are we to argue?

WINE OF THE WEEK: Yarrabank 2013 Brut Rosé ($38): The colour gives this wine away.

The salmon pink indicates that red rpaes have come to the fore in winemaking and given the wine extra stength of palate flavour - and, in my mind, greater appeal than the other two.

The acidity lifts the wine, and the winemaker's notes are spot on: it's delicious. Try it with fullerflavoured dishes such as those featuring pork.

Early look at the Golden Slipper

■ The early market on the Golden Slipper Stakes to be run this Saturday (Mar. 20) is an open one at present, with the Mick Price-Michael Kent trained Profiteer equal favourite, with Stay Inside at just over each way odds.

Despite lowering his colours for the first time in his three starts, the son of a previous Golden Slipper winner, Capitalist, is the one that punters are sticking to, despite his defeat by Anamoe in the Todman Stakes.

In the Todman Stakes he jumped sharply, and shot to an early lead, but didn't appear to settle with the pace he was showing.

This gave the sit to Anamoe, who ran a good second in the Blue Diamond at Caulfield, at his last start after drawing wide.

Both Mick Price and Mick Kent are quietly confident that Profiteer can atone in the big one.

Anamoe, prepared by James Cummings, has been most consistent since he started racing, and will be hard to beat now that he has broken through after a win and two minor placings.

The Richard and Michael Freedman trained two-year-old, Stay Inside, a most impressive winner at his first two starts, finished an unlucky fourth to Anamoe and Profiteer in the Todman, after finishing hard.

On the next line is the impressive winner of the Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield, Artorius in the care of the astute team at Anthony Freedman's yard.

He was most impressive in winning at Sandown over 1300 metres back on January 21, having now raced three times, for two wins and a second.

He is by the runner-up in the Blue Diamond, Flying Artie, back in 2016, behind Extreme Choice, both trained by Mick Price at Caulfield.

He has got to be one of the main chances, but a lot depends on the barrier draw.

The Sydney filly, Four Moves Ahead, scored well in the Sweet Embrace Stakes at Randwick, beating a good field of fillies.

She is with John Sargent in Sydney, and remains unbeaten after two runs.

Sargent has a high opinion of the filly, and says he is confident of a big run.

The James Cummings trained, Ingratiating, was impressive in winning the Talindert Stakes at Flemington back on February 13.

The son of American sire, Frosted, has now had four runs for two wins and two seconds, and will be in the firing line when the whips are cracking.

Prior to winning at his last start he was a good second to Enthaar at Caulfield.

The flying filly Enthaar was beaten by her bad barrier in the Blue Diamond Stakes over 1200 metres after drawing barrier 12, and had to be used up, early to get across from the outside.

She was unbeaten going into the Blue Diamond after bolting in the Chairman's Stakes at Caulfield.

I am sticking with Profiteer, from Stay Inside and Anamoe.

Ready to tee off

■ The popular Epsom Golf Day isn't far away, the big day for the National Jockey Trust, and

● Atorius winning the Blue Diamond. Racing Photos. and the Woodlands Trust have put on a great show through their dynamo organiser, John Sweeney.

The day attracts a number of top golfers from near and far, especially among the jockey ranks and Companies, who gather teams together for the big day on the picturesque course.

Among the jockeys participating on a regular basis are leading hoops, Damien Oliver, Dwayne Dunn, Nash Rawiller, Jack Martin and Dylan Dunn.

Melbourne Cup winning jockey, Jye Mc Neil, will also be featuring along with Jason Benbow and Pat Trotter.

They will be joined by Dean Yendall, Patrick Moloney, along with former top hoops, Gary Willetts and Simon Marshall.

Then there is Brent Thomson, who ruled the Cox Plate in his riding days.

They will be joined by the likes of former Hawthorn football great, Russell Morris, and former Chairman of the VRC, Rod Fitzroy.

Among some of the other well-known players, will be former Racing Victoria Chief Steward, Des Gleeson, and current Racing Steward, Darren Triandafillou.

It is always a big day, prior to the golf getting underway, we cast our minds back to yesteryear and the glory days of the old Epsom Racecourse.

Once again, I will have the privilege of interviewing some of the racing folk connected with the old Epsom days.

We kick off the morning at around 10.30am, with our first guest leading young trainer, Clinton Mc Donald, whose mother, Margaret, was connected with the Hoysted clan, the likes of Fred Hoysted, Bon and Bob Hoysted.

Clinton has done well for a young trainer under the guidance of his father the late, Ross Mc- Donald.

Then we will a chat with former top jockey, Gary Willietts, who won the Cox Plate on Battle Heights back in 1974.

His greatest thrill would have to be when he rode the champion Manikato, a winner of many classics, including five William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley.

With the sad passing of Rob Gaylard, who compered our previous functions, Racing Victoria's racecaller, Matt Hill, will be in charge of proceedings on the day.

NGI are putting up $10,000 for a hole in one on the fifth, which can be won twice.

Other highlights include, the Longest Drive, Nearest the Pins, and the Betting Hole.

After the golf, a presentation dinner will be held at the Woodlands Golf Club.

Noel Smith Memorial held at Horsham ■ The annual Decron Horse Care Noel Smith Memorial Invitation Drivers Championship was held at Horsham on Monday March 8 with only Victorian drivers competing due to covet conditions still in place when the race program was planned.

Heat one (2200 metres) going to Charlton trainer Greg Norman's smart Sweet LouWantapieceoftime 3Y0 gelding Apieceoflou.

Driven by Jack Laugher, Apieceoflou was eased from outside the front line to settle at the rear with first starter Just As Well leading from gate two for Michael Stanley.

Going forward three wide racing for the bell to park in the open for the final circuit, Apieceoflou after taking a slender margin on turning, raced clear in the straight to score a 10.1 metre margin over Just As Well which battled on gamely, with Fightnfury (John Caldow) third off a one/one trip last lap 1.4 metres away. The mile rate 1-58.4.

■ Great Western trainer Kerryn Manning's Kiwi import Revitalise first up in Oz, captured the second 2200 metre heat after leading from outside the front line with Jason Lee in the sulky.

Always travelling beautifully, Revitalise having his first outing since December safely held his rivals at bay to greet the judge a metre clear of Batman Barry (one/two - three wide to face the breeze at the bell) giving John Caldow valuable points. Lets Hustle (James Herbertson) was third 8 metres back after a cosy trip on the back of the winner. The mile rate 2-01.

■ Greg Sugars snared the third heat over 1700 metres aboard the Karlene Tindale (Haddon) trained 5Y0 Rock N Roll Heaven-Lady De Beau gelding Amore Rock in 1-58.1.

Burning away from outside the front line to lead easily, Amore Rock was given a relative easy trip and defied all challengers to register a 2.7 metre margin over Remain Anonamiss (Michael Stanley) which fought on well after racing exposed from the bell. Beneath The Shadow (James Herbertson) was third a half head away after trailing the winner and using the sprint lane.

■ Two very smart horses Highway To Heaven landed the quinella in the fourth and final heat over 2200 metres, the victor being the Marg Lee (Terang) trained and Kerryn Manning driven Highway To Heaven, a 4Y0 gelded son of Christian Cullen and Last Port Of Call who despite racing in the open from gate four, proved too strong for Kenya (Jodi Quinlan) which trailed him throughout going down by 3.1 metres in 157.6. I Am Marquez (Kate Gath) (one/three three wide last lap) was third 4.8 metres away.

After the tally of points, Jason Lee was declared the winner.

By a nose

■ Kilmore staged an interesting nine event card last Tuesday and locally trained runners scored in three races during the evening.

Monegeetta trainer David Miles combined with the stable's Jayden Barker to land the Claire Weston Photography 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 1690 metres with Priddy Supreme, a Art MajorOur Priddy Diva filly Priddy Sublime much to the delight of the large number of owner/breeders headed by staunch stable client Michael Pridmore.

Settling three back along the markers from gate two before moving a spot closer when Island Blue Chip (gate three) came off the leader Goodmorning Cheryl's back to race exposed, Priddy Sublime enjoyed a cosy passage. Using the sprint lane, Priddy Sublime at start number four ran home best to prevail by 2.1 metres in 158.3 over Australiana (one/three), with Island Blue Chip holding down third 1.1 metres away.

Bolinda's Lisa Miles snared the 1690 metre Worlds Best Hoof Oil Pace with her 6Y0 We Will See-Vera Mac mare Whata Glimpse, leading throughout from gate three to account for Lilnova by a nose after trailing and using the sprint lane, with Jemstone Glory a half head away third after racing in the open in a tricky finish.

The mile rate 1-58.5.

■ The Beraldo Coffee Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres saw Euroa trainer/driver Cameron Maggs successful with 4Y0 Yankee Boy-The Secret Dance mare Romances in a mile rate of 2-06. Always handy one/one from

Sutton Grange trainer Leigh Graham landed the TAB Long May We Play Pace over 2180 metres with honest 4Y0 Modern Art-Hotgossip gelding Van Gogh in a mile rate of 2-00.2.

■ Taking a concession for Tatura's Abbey Turnbull, Van Gogh starting from gate for on the second line settled near last as Hot Wire (gate two) led before surrendering to The Longest Day (gate four) outside her racing for the bell. Commencing a three wide forward move in the last lap, Van Gogh was accommodate by Yarrawonga Lassie (one/one) coming out ahead of him receiving a lovely ride home. When The Longest Day broke stride on the final bend the race changed complexion allowing Van Gogh to gain the day by a head from Whats Stanley Got (one/three) and Ubetcha (five back the markers) which weaved in-between runners over the concluding stages.

■ The Carlton and United Breweries Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres was a complete blowout for punters when 5Y0 Bacardi LindyMiriama gelding Don Abrasco scored at odds of $76.60.

Trained and driven by Rockbank's Anthony Portelli, Don Abrasco possied three back in the moving line from gate two, but a long way off the leader Willdomxav (gate four) which declared war on the poleline leader Fling It Rainbow as the pair raced right away from their rivals.

Easing three wide to go forward in the last lap, Don Abrasco raced to the front on the final bend to record a 3.4 metre margin over Bootleg Bert from the tail after switching to the sprint lane on turning. Count Bacardi was third 2.1 metres back off a three wide double trail last lap. The mile rate 2-04.1.

■ Long Forest trainer Peter Thompson enjoyed a change of luck when 5Y0 Four Starzzz SharkFeelingoodwaseasy mare Her Heart Of Gold scored in the 1690 metre MC Labour Pace.

Driven by daughter Kate Gath, Her Heart Of Gold came from the tail of the field off a three wide trail in the last lap to reach the judge in the last stride by a half head over a death-seating River Patrol in 1-57.2. Gozo Sunshine was third 4.2 metres back after leading.

Cosy passage

■ Camperdown trainer Gary Lawlor and son Darrell enjoyed a "night of night's" at Tabcorp Park Melton on Wednesday after winning a stable double.

Four year old Auckland Reacor-Choices Courage gelding Reactor Factor was first to arrive, greeting the judge in the TAB Long May We Play Pace over 2240 metres, while Notnegotiable, a Badlands Hanover-Total Credits gelding scored in the Garrards Horse and Hound 3Y0 Pace over the same trip.

■ Reactor Factor after racing parked from gate five in the early stages before receiving cover when Datizit after being caught wide went forward to race outside the leader Long Weekend (gate four).

After a cosy passage, Darrell in what was deserved of the "drive of the night", switched Reactor Factor to the sprint lane on turning to

gain the day by 3.5 metres in a rate of 1-58.5 from Datizit and Long Weekend which held third 2.2 metres away.

■ Notnegotiable, a full brother to the stable's smart pacer Bad Billy (now retired), was making his sixth race appearance and raced exposed from outside the front line before racing clear on turning to register a strong 5.1 metre margin in a rate of 2-01.9, accounting for Written Courage (one/two) and polemarker Major Mischief which used the sprint lane after trailing the weakening leader Holdontight .

Gary had previously scored a double at Stawell a number of years back and did similar when training gallopers at one stage.

■ Rita Burnett combined with daughter Monique aboard 6Y0 Betterthancheddar-My Minnis Folly gelding Teleggio to land the DNR Logistics Pacer over 1720 metres.

Enjoying the run of the race from inside the second line trailing the poleline leader Will He Star, Tellegio heavily supported used the sprint lane to prevail by a nose from Little Wednesday (three back the markers) out wide in a tricky finish, with Will He Star holding down third 1.2 metres away. The mile rate 2-00.1.

■ The 1720 metre Beraldo Coffee 2Y0 Trotters Handicap went the way of Pootilla trainer Brittany O'Brien's Dreamcatcher-Xena Hest colt Eds Dream following an eye catching first up third at Bendigo a week earlier giving Bendigo based reinsman Neil McCallum a welcome winner at headquarters.

Beginning fast from barrier six to lead after Stingofawasp (barrier four) went off stride shortly after the start, Eds Dream galloped briefly in the final circuit allowing first starter Tough Love (barrier three) which had been in the open to take over.

Shifting ground on turning which gave Eds Dream the opportunity to drive up inside her, the pair went head and head up the running, with Eds Dream showing great heart to win by 1.3 metres from Everybodyloveskenny (one/ one) in a rate of 2-04.8. The effort told on Tough Love who was gallant in finishing third 9.2 metres away.

■ Andy Gath produced a nice ex-Kiwi 6Y0 gelding by the name of Fynn Frost to take the Hero Pace over 2240 metre when first up in Oz. A gelded son of Always A Virgin And Cool Frost who last raced in January, Fynn Frost driven by wife Kate was soon off and running after starting from the extreme draw to park outside the leader and hot favourite Flying Jo. Applying plenty of pressure to the leader in the last lap, Fynn Frost although racing a little rough, asserted his authority on straightening to record an impressive neck margin over Cool Rocking Daddy (four back the markers) out wide in 1-57.6. Delwyns Son (one/two) was third 1.3 metres away.

■ Two meetings were held on Thursday Maryborough in the afternoon and Mildura at night.

Allendale owner/trainer Adam Stephens has his small team flying at present and landed a double at Maryborough with 8Y0 I Am The WayAlberts Belle gelding Iamawingate taking the 2190 metre Redpath Tyre and Battery Pace and half brother 5Y0 Union Guy gelding Wingate Guy the Crameri Export Quality Chaff Pace over the same trip.

■ Iamawingate (gate five) driven by James Herbertson almost crossed polemarker Rock The Nation running into the first turn leaving him exposed until Ferocious Son went forward to occupy the breeze giving him one/one cover.

Easing three wide approaching the final bend, Iamawingate finished his race off well to defeat Fleetwood Rock which eased three wide from behind the leader on turning by 1.4 metres in 159.8. Ferocious Son battled on gamely for third 1.1 metres back.

■ Wingate Guy (Josh Duggan) settled midfield after being trapped wide from gate three as Rocknroll Opal led from gate four. Easing tree wide solo in the final circuit, Wingate Guy dashed to the lead on the home turn to record a six metre victory over Myparis which flashed

■ Arcadia trainer Patrick Ryan's Love YouRight Everest gelding Sweet On You bred and raced by Kevin Riseley's Sheron Park Pty Ltd, led throughout from gate five to capture the 2nd Heat of the Aldebaran Park Vicbred Platinum Home Grown Classic for 3Y0 Trotting Colts & Geldings over 1690 metres with Michael Bellman in the sulky.

Beginning fast from gate five to cross the hot favourite Central Otago from the pole, Sweet On You defied all challengers to just last by a head from Central Otago which moved off his back on turning. Morsure Damour was third 20.9 metres back after racing exposed. The mile rate 1-58.

Outstanding run

■ At Mildura, Marong trainer Shaun McNaulty's much travelled 7Y0 Shadyshark Hanover-Elvira Bromac gelding Hashtag brought up his 19th victory when an outstanding winner of the exciting feature event - the $12,000 Tasco Petroleum Pace over 1790 metres in a mile rate of 1-56.1.

Driven by Bendigo's Rodney Lakey, Hashtag was taken back at the start from outside the front line to settle three back in the moving line as the expected leader Ozzie Battler did so from gate two.

Pushed four wide in the last lap by Rocknroll Eyes ahead of him, Hashtag appeared to be struggling as Bernie Winkle was four wide outside him running into the final bend when Ozzie Battler dashed away looking all over a winner.

Gaining his second wind on turning, Hashtag charged home to nab Ozzie Battler by a half neck on the wire, with Rocknroll Eyes 5.7 metres back in third place ahead of Caulonia Terror which used runs inside the pair in the final circuit. Bernie Winkle was a disappointing fifth 8.3 metres from the winner.

■ Merbein part-owner trainer Terry Gange who has been involved in the sport for most of his life, landed the Mildura Pacing Cup Carnival April 6 - 10 Pace with 4Y0 Modern Art-Caro Ella gelding Mister Jimaringle who has returned to form in recent weeks.

Driven by Jack Laugher, Mister Jimaringle was restrained to the rear from outside the front line giving the leader Minika a big start. Circling the field in the last lap, Mister Jimaringle sprinted brilliantly to record a 6.4 metre margin in advance of Sheer Modern (one/two) and Without Hesitation which followed the pacemaker finishing 5.7 metres away.

The mile rate 1-59.8.
