Taylors Lakes worker hangs up his boots ■ A Taylors Lakes maintenance worker is keen to hang up the work boots for good after scoring a $1 million division one prize in last week’s Lotto draw.

The happy winner held one of two division one winning entries nationally in Monday Lotto draw 4012, drawn Monday September 28 and takes home a division one prize of $1 million.

The winning ticket was unregistered, which means officials from The Lott had no way of contacting the winner and had to wait for him to come forward to claim his prize.

When asked how he planned to enjoy life as a millionaire, the hardworking maintenance worker said he was eager to retire immediately and buy himself a unit.

Local Briefs Offensive behaviour at Sunshine West

■ Brimbank Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are investigating two incidents where a man was seen inappropriately touching himself in Sunshine West last month.

Both incidents occurred in the vicinity of Kororoit Creek Trail between Wright St and Derby Rd. During the first instance, two 17-year-old girls were out walking when they saw a man lying naked in the grass masturbating on Friday, September 11, about 3.20pm.

The man followed them as they walked away towards Derby Rd where they lost sight of him.

The second incident occurred on Monday September 21, where a male cyclist noticed a man following behind a female jogger and masturbating about 1.40pm.

The bike rider was about to alert the 31year-old jogger as to what was occurring behind her and the offender ran off along Wright St. The man is perceived to be Asian in appearance, about 165cm tall with black hair cut in a short military style.

He was wearing black shorts, a blue top and grey jacket.

Police believe it is likely the man has targeted other women or teenage girls in the area and urge those people to contact Brimbank SOCIT. Warrants have been issued for the 22year-old’s arrest for thefts.

He is known to frequent the Parkville and Melbourne areas.

Investigators have released an image of Welsh in the hope someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

Roxburgh Pk alert ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Roxburgh Park man Cengizhan Ibrahim Catak.

A warrant has been issued for the 26-yearold’s arrest in relation to criminal damage and breaching a court order.

He is described as 175cm tall with a thin build, black hair, and has an olive complexion.

Investigators have released an image of Catak in the hope someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

He is known to frequent the Noble Park and Roxburgh Park areas.

Candidate does not want publicity

■ A candidate for public office on Moreland City Council has written to The Local Paper, “officially prohibiting” any material about him being published.

Paul Failla, a candidate for the NorthEast Ward: “If The Local Paper newspaper continues to make any type of contact with me at any stage or publish my name with derogatory or commentary that will have an effect to my election campaign or any defamatory statements whatsoever, such action shall result to a claim for damages. Furthermore I have been directed to lodge a complaint with Newspaper Media Regulator immediately if my name appears on any of your publications.”

In line with Mr Failla’s “warning”, The Local Paper has chosen not include his preelection statements to voters in our upcoming Meet The Candidates feature. No other candidates seeking the public’s vote have objected to publication of their statements.

Wanted: St Albans angle ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Paul Bresnan.

The 52-year-old has two outstanding warrants for threats to kill and threats to inflict serious injury.

Bresnan is described as 175cm tall, medium build with receding hair. Has been known to wear a toupee.

He is known to frequent the Prahran or St Albans area.

Investigators have released an image of Bresnan in the hope someone may have information on his current whereabouts.

Sex assaults in Altona Meadows ● Hayley Fisher There is a western suburbs link to the Police appealing for public assistance to help locate Box Hill woman Hayley Fisher.

The 27-year-old is wanted for questioning in relation to home invasion, false imprisonment and assault offences that occurred in Box Hill between September 23-24. Fisher is described as being about 165cm tall, with a slim build and long brown hair with blonde highlights. She is known to frequent Box Hill and Melbourne’s western suburbs. Investigators have released an image of Fisher in the hope someone may have information on her current whereabouts.

■ Police are investigating multiple reports of sexual assault incidents in Altona Meadows last Thursday (Oct. 1).

Investigators have been told a man on a black electric bike rode past three women as they were walking along the Skelton Creek Trail between 3.30pm-4pm.

The unknown male sexually assaulted the women before riding off.

No words were exchanged but the male did look back at all three victims and is described as having a slim build, tall, and aged in his early 20s.

He was wearing a face mask, dark pants, jumper and a black motorbike helmet.

■ Buses and coaches will replace trains on the Craigieburn, Seymour and Shepparton lines as maintenance works take place this week. Buses will replace trains between North Melbourne and Craigieburn stations from 8.20pm on Wednesday (Oct. 7) until last service on Sunday (Oct. 11). During the works, Metro Trains will carry out maintenance including platform renewal at Oak Park Station and general track maintenance at Gaffney St, Pascoe Vale.

Broadmeadows link to lad ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teenager Nicholas Mayes.

The 16-year-old was last seen in Doncaster East on September 19.

Police and family have concerns for his welfare due to his age and the length of time he has been missing.

Nicholas is known to frequent the Broadmeadows and Melbourne CBD areas.

He is described as being about 165cm tall with a medium build and brown hair.

Police have released an image of Nicholas in the hope someone recognises him and can provide information regarding his current whereabouts.

Anyone with information about Nicholas’s whereabouts is asked to contact Doncaster Police Station on 8841 3911.

1-in-10 could be hit by virus

■ The Victorian Government is doubling an assistance payment for those experiencing significant financial hardship as a result of the Coronavirus pandemic, as part of a $50 million program to make sure people are not “falling through the cracks”.

The Government has commissioned the Red Cross to provide financial assistance, information and referrals to those doing it tough during the pandemic who are not eligible for Commonwealth support or the International Student Emergency Relief Fund.

People living in Victoria with limited income or savings who are on temporary or provisional visas and undocumented migrants are now able to apply for a payment of up to $800 per person – helping them out with living expenses while things are tough.

Those who have already received a payment under the program will be eligible for a $400 top up on their original payment.

Families may be eligible for more, depending on how many people are in the family and their individual circumstances.

Payments begin to flow within five days of a correctly completed application being received. Applicants may be eligible for an additional payment after eight weeks if they are continuing to experience financial hardship.

The Brotherhood of St Laurence is working with community organisations to identify people who may be eligible and support them to apply.

The vital program has already delivered 6588 Extreme Hardship Support Program payments, worth over $3.3 million, supporting 8,341 individuals.

The program has also connected around 20,000 people with other Victorian government supports, including rent relief, international student support, local food relief services, health protection advice and mental health support.

The Extreme Hardship payment builds on other Victorian Government announcements to support the vulnerable during this global crisis, including the $45 million International Student Emergency Relief Fund.

“We have supported Victorian workers with a $450 selfisolation payment, meaning those who have to miss a shift by staying home to wait on a coronavirus test result aren’t out of pocket as a result,” said a Government representative.

“We also established a $1500 payment for workers who can’t earn an income because they have to isolate or quarantine at home, which is now funded by the Commonwealth.”

■ Investigators from Fawkner Wayward Taskforce have released CCTV footage in relation to an aggravated home invasion that occurred in Flemington earlier this year.

Investigators have been told seven occupants were at a Princes St home when four male offenders gained entry to the property about 8pm on July 20.

The offenders, who were armed with knives

and baseball bats, threatened the occupants before ransacking the house and attempting to steal laptops and phones.

It’s believed the offenders then fled by jumping the rear fence, dropping all the items before being picked up by a car on a nearby street.

Hit-run at Point Cook ■ Police are appealing for information following a hit-run crash in Point Cook..

Investigators understand the driver of a Holden sedan was driving erratically along Saltwater Promenade just after 2pm on Tuesday September 8 when he lost control and crashed into a light pole.

The impact caused the pole to fall on a Commodore wagon which was travelling behind the Holden at the time.

The male occupant of the wagon was not injured but his vehicle was extensively damaged.

The driver of the sedan did not stop following the crash and was last seen driving north along Saltwater Promenade.

Police have released images of the Holden sedan in the hope anyone with information will come forward.

New pitch at Coburg ■ Hosken Reserve in Coburg North will be home to a new synthetic soccer pitch, allowing more football club participants, local schools, women and girls and wider diverse community to access to modern, safe and inclusive facility.

The new sporting facility will include 100lux LED lighting, a shock pad and low-level fencing.

The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA)-accredited synthetic surface will contribute to the low-maintenance, droughtresistant and durable all year-round facility – able to withstand up to 10 years of wear and tear.

The new pitch will support field usage of up to 70 hours per week, which is double that of a standard grass field.

Moreland Mayor Cr Lambros Tapinos said it is important that Council continues to create high quality, state-of-the-art sporting facilities for the Moreland community to enjoy.

“Having quality open space and sporting facilities enhances the liveability of our city as we welcome more residents to Moreland,” said Cr Tapinos.

“Well designed and accessible sporting facilities also encourage our community to stay

Local Briefs Shooting charge ■ Armed Crime Squad detectives have charged a man following a non-fatal shooting in Dallas last week.

The 29-year-old Macleod man was arrested at an address in Armstrong Creek in relation to the alleged shooting on Benalla St just after 12.30pm on Monday, September 28.

He has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life, common law assault, intentional cause injury, prohibited person possess firearm, use firearm (discharge bullet at premises) and drive whilst suspended.

The victim, a 40-year-old Dallas man sustained a gunshot to the lower body and was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries where he remains.

A 29-year-old Armstrong Creek woman was also arrested in relation to the shooting however she has been released pending further enquiries.

The Macleod man was due to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The pair have also been charged with breaching the Chief Health Officer’s directions after being found to be further than 5km outside their residential addresses.

Car jacking pair ■ A man and woman have been arrested following a carjacking and subsequent pursuit in Melbourne’s west.

It is alleged a food delivery driver had just returned to his vehicle after dropping an order in Faye St, Melton just after 9pm, when a man threatened him with a weapon and pulled him from his vehicle.

Investigators have been told two men then entered his vehicle before fleeing.

Police later spotted the car in the vicinity of Barries Rd just after midnight, where a short pursuit was initiated before being abandoned.

The car continued to be monitored by Police and a female passenger was observed leaving the vehicle in a nearby carpark.

A 28-year-old Melton woman was arrested in the car park a short time later.

The car was eventually abandoned on Bittern St with the driver being arrested at a Plover St residence after attempting to flee on foot.

The driver, a 26-year-old Melton West man, has been charged with seven offences including aggravated carjacking with an offensive weapon, theft of motor vehicle, conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving while being pursued by Police, and other driving related offences.

He was expected to face Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The passenger was released pending further enquiries.

Police continue to investigate this incident, anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Car set alight ■ Moreland Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for information after a stolen car was set alight in Brunswick East.

Police have been told the 2016 Toyota 86 model car was stolen from Lalor on Tuesday August 4 sometime between 10am and 8.45pm.

The car was then driven to Little Miller St, a dead-end road which opens up to Balfe Park, and set alight.

It is believed the offender in the stolen car was joined by another man, who travelled independently to the location, before they both set the car on fire about 9.10pm.

The pair were then seen to run off through the park and it’s believed they left the scene in another vehicle.

Investigators believe one of the men may have been injured at the time of lighting the fire.

The driver of the stolen car is described as having a thin to medium build, aged possibly early to mid-20s, has short dark hair and a short beard.

He was wearing a cap, down jacket which was possibly blue in colour, skinny leg tracksuit pants and sneakers. www.crimestoppersvic.com.au

THE DOOR AND OTHER UNCANNY TALES

■ The Door and Other Uncanny Tales (NineStar Press) by Melbourne essayist and author, Dmetri Kakmi, represents his first fullscale exploration of the literary gothic.

The stories in this collection draw the reader into a psycho-sexual vortex in which fantasy and reality collapse to create nightmarish worlds from which there is no escape.

They are powerfully charged, dream-like explorations of violence, neglect, regret and the need for love, graced with poetic elegance, and said to be disturbing tales that push boundaries.

Living paintings, spectral children, cannibal serial killers, lost souls, haunted houses, and ancient evil proliferate in The Door. Combined with Dmetri Kakmi’s gothic imagination and mordant humour, the result is fiction that is provocative and unsettling.

This collection contains three new and three previously published stories, including the acclaimed Haunting Matilda , The Long Lonely Road and The Boy by the Gate.

Most stories are set in Australia, though The Long Lonely Road is set on the island of Tenedos in Turkey, where Kakmi grew up, and centres on a Muslim boy.

The main character of the novella, The Door, which lends its name to the collection, is Greek and homosexual. Some stories have queer characters, most do not. Several stories have female main characters.

Putting the collection together gave Kakmi pause for thought.

“Where do stories come from? The best I can do is to say they come from an unconscious urge inside the author and find sentience on the page,” Kakmi says.

“Often you do not know what you are writing about until someone—a friend, a reader or a critic—draws your attention to the subject matter. For instance, when my first book Mother Land was published a reviewer said it was about how violence can affect a community like a virus and spread to the most unlikely individuals.

‘Is it?’ I thought. When I looked closely, I saw that on some level it is. I just did not realize it at the time.

“The act of violence runs through everything I write. For me it is the ultimate existential ques-

Kakmi says that the other thing that links these stories is children, often in dire situations.

“Given my upbringing at a volatile time in Turkish history, it is inevitable I keep going back to the locus, trying to understand what happened in the Grimm’s fairy tale of my childhood, and why?

Kakmi’s best known works are Mother Land (2008), his memoir of growing up in 1960s Turkey, which was published to widespread acclaim in Australia, England and Turkey, and the children's anthology, When We Were Young (2007). His essays and short stories appear in a number of anthologies.

Romeo and Juliet ■ ‘Two households ...’ so opens one of Shakespeare’s most-loved plays, Romeo and Juliet. In this Globe Theatre production, Romeo (Nathan Welsh) and Juliet (Charlotte Beaumont) present the prologue themselves; a spoiler that chronicles the doom-laden tragedy about to enfold them.

Not quite the Baz Luhrmann version, but this 90-minute production is determinedly directed by Michael Oakley to appeal to younger generations.

Deliberately cast with a 50/50 gender split, some traditionally male roles are played by female actors.

While the dialogue is 1590s Elizabethan, the costumes place it firmly in retro 1980s.

There’s also comedy before the plot darkens. In Verona, two wealthy families, the Montagues and the Capulets bear an ‘ancient grudge’ resulting in street battles between the two rival gangs.

At a ball, Juliet Capulet, sparkling in silver,

meets heartthrob, Romeo Montague. It’s love at first sight for these two headstrong teenagers; ‘star cross’d lovers’ determined to be together.

Juliet is the driving force in this relationship.

Passionate and exuberant, you can see her imagination taking over, all her romantic daydreams coming true.

Her father, Lord Capulet (Stuart Bowman), railing against his defiant, ungrateful daughter who is betrothed to no less than a prince, only deepens Juliet’s determination.

Secretly married to Romeo, Juliet hatches a foolproof plan. But, as luck would have it, the scheme unravels, and we already know that it’s not going to end well.

● Cast of Noyews Fludde Photo: Ponch Hawkes ■ Victorian Opera is throwing a party. In a virtual sense, of course, due to current COVID-19 restrictions. But that isn't stopping the state opera company from celebrating its 15-year anniversary.

The company was founded on October 6, 2005, under the visionary leadership of late conductor Richard Gill, and continues strongly today under another Richard, Artistic Director Richard Mills.

Its first production was a family friendly version of Benjamin Britten's Noyes Fludde, performed by Victorian Opera's youth company.

In that cast were several young potential stars, including the current conductor of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Nicholas Carter and now- international soprano Nicole Car. On a personal note, one of the other principals was my older son Edward Smith, who, along with his brother Christian, both had great performing opportunities with Victorian Opera before becoming professional singers.

There are so many people in the last 15 years whose careers were started by Victorian Opera, and it has been a wonderful source of work for both emerging and established performers.

And even in the current restricted time, the company is planning for the future.

While the 2021 season won't be revealed until November, it will include four new operas, one of which is Parrwang Lifts the Sky by acclaimed Yorta Yorta soprano and composer, Deborah Cheetham.

It tells the creation story of the sunrise, from the oral history of the Wathaurong people of Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.

It will be the 2021 Victorian Opera's Education Production, and will be livestreamed to thousands of school students across the state.

The company has also announced the Michael Stubbs and Malcolm Roberts Opera Prize, which is $50,000 to provide employment for emerging singers throughout 2021, and interested artists can submit applications now.

Victorian Opera is also releasing a digital book, thirty-two over Fifteen: Victorian Opera's Commissioned Works 2005-2020, with an accompanying web series. Both are available at victorianopera.com.au "Victorian Opera celebrates this milestone at a particularly dark time.

Aussie directors like Rod Hardy and Anthony Bowman will not only be adding their expertise and talent to the Australian film industry but they will also be looking a further opportunities abroad.

Relaxing soft drinks ■ The maker of Mountain Dew and other caffeinated soft drinks now wants to sell consumers a beverage that will help them relax and drift off to sleep.

With tastes shifting away from sugary drinks, PepsiCo Inc. is about to start selling a beverage with L-theanine, which is an amino acid and FDA-approved supplement used for relaxation and usually found in green teas.

Named ‘Driftwell’, the product was developed to ease angst and restlessness, according to Emily Silver, PepsiCo's vice president of innovation and capabilities for North America.

"The need for relaxation has only increased during the pandemic," Silver said. The new drink is part of what the company calls a "functional" category of beverages that aim to help consumers with specific needs.

With competition high and consumer interest in flagship soft drinks waning, beverage companies are exploring new formats.

Coca-Cola Co., for example, is testing a new alcoholic drink based on the popular Topo Chico mineral water. And the industry is delving into drinks enhanced with CBD, a nonpsychoactive cannabis ingredient that companies say promotes relaxation without the high produced by marijuana.

■ Pope Francis strayed from his prepared remarks at his weekly Sunday Angelus overlooking St Peter's Square to scold his critics for gossiping, calling it a "plague worse than COVID" that seeks to divide the Catholic Church. The Pope did not mention any specific factions, but there are groups who strongly dislike this Pope, and in some cases even refuse to recognise him. He talked at length about the devil being the "biggest gossiper," trying to divide the church with his lies.

"Please brothers and sisters, let's try to not gossip," he said.

"Gossip is a plague worse than COVID. Worse. Let's make a big effort: No gossiping!"

Name tags covered

■ Rochester Police Department officers have been given permission to cover up their names displayed on their tags to avoid harassment from left-wing protesters, who are screaming out their home addresses, kids' names and schools, and making taunting calls to their parents in front of them.

They are also spreading personal information about the cops via social media.

"The past couple of months officers names have been researched by protesters to put personal information out to the public, putting the safety of their families in jeopardy," said a statement from RPD Chief La'Ron Singletary, who announced his resignation earlier this week.

"Officers have been allowed to remove their name tags in an effort to prevent their personal information from being spread on social media," Singletary added.

Local radio show host and journalist Bob Lonsberry posted on Twitter: "Peaceful protesters have stood outside the Rochester Public Safety Building, read an officer's name off his uniform, tracked him down on their phones, and called his parents to taunt them or held up the phone to show the officer his home address and threaten to come after him there.

■ New York state prison officials put a reputed MS-13 gang member back on the streets even though the feds ordered him held on a murder charge that carries the death penalty. Ever Morales-Lopez, 26, was granted early parole for a 2018 conspiracy conviction on Long Island and released from the medium-security Washington Correctional Facility in Comstock on Sept. 3, records show. But a federal arrest warrant for Morales-Lopez was lodged with the state after he was indicted in July, along with seven other reputed MS-13 members, on racketeering charges that cover six murders, two attempted murders and a kidnapping conspiracy, a law enforcement source familiar with his case said.

The warrant was supposed to ensure he was transferred to federal custody to await trial instead of being sprung, the source said. Instead, the FBI didn't learn Morales-Lopez had been freed until Sept. 8 - five days after he was cut loose. But members of the FBI-Long Island Gang Task Force were able to track him down and bust him within 12 hours, the source said.

What’s dirty in your bathroom ■ It's actually the toothbrush holder. In a study in 2019 on household germs, conducted by the global public health and safety organization NSF International, researchers tested 30 surfaces, six of which were in the bathroom in 22 homes for the presence of bacteria, yeast and mold.

While 27 per cent of toilet seats contained mold and yeast, 64 per cent of toothbrush holders did.

Of the toothbrush holders, 27 per cent had coliform which is an indicator of potential faecal contamination and 14 per cent had staph.

"The toothbrush holder often has many of the factors germs need," says Lisa Yakas, a microbiologist at NSF International.

"It is dark, damp and not cleaned as frequently as it should be."

But that doesn't mean you should freak out about your germy bathroom, says Sean Gibbons, an assistant professor at the Institute for Systems Biology, a non-profit research institution in Seattle.

Coliform tests detect faecal contamination, but coliforms are not usually pathogenic.

■ Instagram is the worst social media network for mental health and wellbeing, according to a recent survey of almost 1500 teens and young adults. While the photo-based platform got points for self-expression and self-identity, it was also associated with high levels of anxiety, depression, bullying and FOMO, or the "fear of missing out." Out of five social networks included in the survey, YouTube received the highest marks for health and wellbeing and was the only site that received a net positive score by respondents. Twitter came in second, followed by Facebook and then Snapchat with Instagram bringing up the rear.

The Status Of Mind survey included input from 1,479 young people ages 14 to 24 from February through May of this year, people answered questions about how different social media platforms impacted 14 different issues related to their mental or physical health. There were certainly some benefits associated with social networking. All of the sites received positive scores for self-identity, self-expression, community building and emotional support, for example. YouTube also got high marks for bringing awareness of other people's health experiences, for providing access to trustworthy health information and for decreasing respondents' levels of depression, anxiety, and loneliness.

Doing it easy in jail ■ The his-and-hers California federal prisons where a judge has agreed to send Lori Loughlin and her husband to serve their upcoming sentences in the college admissions scandal are hardly Alcatraz. Both are low-security slammers within two hours of their $9.5 million mansion in a gated community west of Los Angeles. If approved by the federal Bureau of Prisons, Loughlin's new gated community will be the "Satellite Camp" of the Federal Correctional Institution in Victorville. The camp offers yoga, pilates and origami, as well as music lessons, including classes in saxophone, accordion, or ukulele, according to the facilities' inmate handbook.

Cartoon drawing, crochet, leather craft and ceramics are also on offer. During her stay, the Full House star could also learn skills for a new career if her acting career is never revived including how to drive a forklift, repair bicycles or be a dental assistant, the handbook advises.

Magazine ■ When I was a lot younger I went to the pictures to see Fred Astaire in many films - I was not a fan of his dancing but I loved to see him onscreen.

As I grew older my tastes changed and I began to appreciate that this man was a brilliant dancer and I became a huge fan.

My big regret was that I did not get to see him when he was in Melbourne to film On The Beach in 1959.

These days I love to watch the old films with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers - that was when we had real family films. I went to a preview of a new Hollywood film recently and I felt as if I was at a porno movie - I ask myself how much lower can we sink and whatever happened to style and class?

Frederick Austerlitz was born in Omaha, Nebraska in 1899. His mother was born in America and his father emigrated from Austria.

Fred was six years old when his father lost his job and the family moved to New York to concentrate on establishing Fred and his sister Adele as a juvenile vaudeville singing and dancing team.

The youngsters were successful and changed their surnames to Astaire. By the time Fred was 18 they were appearing in Broadway shows and on London's West End. When Adele married in 1932 the team broke up and Fred began working with a new stage partner, Claire Luce.

By Kevin Trask of 3AW and 96.5 Inner FM Fred auditioned for RKO Pictures and after his screen test the famous comments were noted, "Can't act. Slightly bald. Also dances."

Despite these comments RKO cast Fred opposite Joan Crawford in his first on screen appearance in the film Dancing Lady. He got fifth billing in Flying Down To Rio in 1933 - but it was the film that launched his career.

The public loved Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers and wanted to see more of them dancing onscreen. Over the following 16 years Fred and Ginger made another nine films together which included Carefree, Follow The Fleet, The Gay Divorcee, Roberta, Shall We Dance, The Story Of Vernon and Irene Castle, Swing Time, Top Hat and The Barkleys Of Broadway.

● Fred Astaire He worked with his personal choreographer Hermes Pan and they developed original dancing routines for his films. Fred was a perfectionist and insisted working for long hours to get it right.

He also liked to film the routines in one shot wherever possible. His classic films include Holiday Inn, Blue Skies, Easter Parade, Three Little Words and Royal Wedding.

He married Phyllis Potter in 1933 and they had three children, Peter his stepson and their own two children Fred Jnr and Ava. Fred was

devastated when Phyllis passed away in 1954 at the age of 46.

In his later years he continued to make television and film appearances. When he was in Melbourne in 1959 he played golf with Tony Charlton and joined Bruce Skeggs in the commentary box at the trots.

Tony Perkins recalled happy times playing piano at the Showgrounds whilst Fred sang along during the filming breaks and my friend Bill Bennett appears in a scene with Fred in On The Beach.

His final musical film was Finian's Rainbow in 1968. Fred married Robyn Smith, who was a jockey, in 1980 and they were very happy in his final years.

FredAstaire died from pneumonia on June 22, 1987. His last request was to thank his fans for their years of support. In a final quote from Frank Sinatra - "I have only one thing to say about Fred: He could have been the classiest performer I have ever known in all my years in showbusiness."

■ The sad passing of rocker Max Merritt brings back memories of his first gig in Oz when he toured with the Meteors in 1963. Max and band were big time across the ditch in New Zealand, they came to Oz as the support group to American cowboy/vocalist Sheb Wooley. Sheb who ?

He sang The Purple People Eater. Sheb led a colourful life mainly as an actor in Westerns including High Noon, Rawhide and a string of spaghetti Westerns. Side hustles included being a rodeo horseman, married five times and sometimes C&W singer.

Under the hammer ■ Movie buff Bill Collins amassed a mammoth collection of items relative to movies of the past- 10,000 items in fact - autographs, props, pictures, DVDs, and so on. So many items it took Theodore Bruce Auctioneers and Valuers four years to catalogue all items. They will be offered for sale online starting October 18 for four sessions concluding November 29. If you’re into memorabilia then be watching, or be square.

Toilet time ■ A lady rang 3AW’s Tom Elliott and in conversation claimed she collected Chamber Pans and to date had 670 pans of all shapes, sizes and colours. Maybe that’s what caused the rush on toilet rolls.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs ENOLA HOLMES (2020/M/Netflix): "Stranger Things" star Millie Bobby Brown stars as Enola Holmes, teen sister of legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes, and when she discovers her mother missing, she sets off to find her, and along the way becomes a super-sleuth in her own right as she outwits her famous brother and unravels a dangerous conspiracy around a mysterious young Lord.

Sprightly and relatively energetic late 19th century adventure yarn is driven by wit, charm and a sense of adventuresome fun that is sure to delight couch-bound amateur sleuths, but most notably by a standout cast that includes Superman's Henry Cavill as an emotionally effective Sherlock Holmes, Helena Bonham Carter as Eudoria Holmes, the eccentric and missing matriarch of the Holmes family and Sam Claflin as the more cold-stone-hearted Mycroft Holmes.

Based on the popular Nancy Springer book series, period detail, production and costume design all fine, and even though its breaking the 4th wall "Fleabag" and "Ellery Queen" approach and the issue of female empowerment becomes a bit overbearing at times, this is ultimately a well intentioned and rewarding bubble-gum viewing experience. Stars: *** SEA FEVER (2019/MA15+/Google Play & AppleTV): Admirably effective low budget suspense-horror-mystery of the crew of a West of Ireland trawler who become marooned at sea, and soon find themselves fighting for their lives against a growing parasite in their water supply.

Claustrophobic and isolated setting adds tremendously to the growing tension, and even though a bigger budget would have been an added bonus to the overall proceedings, there's lots to admire here as the stellar cast, the includes Dougray Scott, Connie Nielsen, Jack Hickey and Hermione Corfield, all make this a worthwhile experience.

Openly borrowing and owing a lot to such classics as Ridley Scott's "Alien," James Cameon's "The Abyss" and John Carpenter's "The Thing," among others, this is a relatively gore-less but potently atmospheric nail-biter, and as a result, Irish writer-director Neasa Hardiman will be no doubt headed for bigger shores in Hollywood. Stars: *** RATCHED: Season One (2020/MA15+/Netfilx/8 Parts): Devilishly delightful origin story. set in 1947, of author Ken Kesey's "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" book and subsequent Oscar winning film character Mildred Ratched, who begins working as a nurse at a leading psychiatric hospital, but beneath her stylish exterior lurks a growing darkness.

Co-executive produced by Michael Douglas, who produced the 1975 Oscar winning film "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest," and developed and co-executive produced by award winning "Feud" and "American Horror Story" front-man Ryan Murphy, this prequel to the literary and cinematic classics is a diabolically wicked, stylish, energetic, darkly comic, colourful and twisted experience from beginning to end.

Overflowing with classic cinematic references, most notably the music of the great Bernard Herrmann from such classic thrillers as "Psycho," "North By Northwest," "Vertigo" and "Cape Fear," to name a few, Sarah Paulson commands every moment of her screen time with great intensity and manipulative exultation as Nurse Mildred Ratched, all the while remaining faithful in essence to Louise Fletcher's characterization and Oscar winning performance from the 1975 film, yet making it very much her own, and is aided by a stellar supporting cast the includes the scene stealing Judy Davis as Nurse Betsy Bucket, along with Jon Jon Briones, Sharon Stone, Amanda Plummer and Vincent D'Onofrio.

Not for the squeamish, the eye popping colour palates, top shelf direction, editing, pacing, set and costume design and period detail, all combine to bring the AFI's Number # 5 Screen Villain of All Time to vibrant blood-letting life, a dark, funny and twisted excursion into fear that pushes many of our primal buttons, and with no doubt something even the great Alfred Hitchcock would have relished with his uniquely macabre slice on life. Stars: ***½

Despite a number of overly familiar story beats, this flavourful, heartfelt drama offers up characters who deserve our time and attention, bolstered even more by two wonderful lead performances.

Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, a hard-working mother who is known across town as a former winner of the prestigious Miss Juneteenth pageant (created to help commemorate Emancipation Day, when slavery was officially ended on June 19, 1865), who is determined to enter her teenage daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) in the contest.

Kai isn't really interested in competing, but Turquoise is insistent, as the winner will be offered a full scholarship to the university of her choice.

As her own life didn't work out as she would have liked, Turquoise is going to make sure Kai doesn't repeat the same mistakes.

Miss Juneteenth nicely captures the world in which Turquoise and Kai inhabit, but some plot turns and character arcs are too easy to see coming, giving the overall story a predictable, deja-vu feel about it.

Debutant writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples obviously cares about her characters and where they may be heading, and makes sure the audience does to. Beharie and Chikaeze are simply terrific.

Yuko Takeuchi April 1 1980 September 27 2020.

The film industry is in shock after celebrated star Yuko Takeuchi took her own life on September 27, aged only 40.

Ms. Takeuchi is the fourth Japanese performer to commit suicide since May, after Sei Ashina (AI Collapse), Haruma Miura (The Eternal Zero), and Hana Kimura (Netflix's Terrace House), and really shows the heavy toll this pandemic is having on the mental health of so many people.

Born in Urawa, Saitama, Japan, Ms. Takeuchi made her big screen debut in the 1998 drama Innocent World, followed almost immediately by her first TV appearance in the series Who Do You Think You Are? Ms. Takeuchi then landed a supporting role in Ring (1998), a huge box-office hit that would take the world by storm, spawning many sequels, spin-offs and remakes, and had a major influence on the horror genre for years. After appearing in TV shows such as

Friends (2000), Ms. Takeuchi got her first cinematic starring role in Yomigaeri : Resurrection (2002), which presented a compelling, unique twist on the zombie film, and proved to be a massive success right across Asia, and along with The Queen Of Lunchtime Cuisine, made her an actor in high demand.

Notable films that followed were Night Of The Shooting Stars (2003), Heaven's Bookstore (2004 - playing two roles), and the muchloved Be With You (2004), which quickly lead to a TV incarnation in 2005, then a very good South Korean remake in 2018.

After starring in Isao Yukisada's Spring Snow (2005), Ms Takeuchi delivered one of her best performances in the tender drama Dog In A Sidecar (2007), before teaming up with director Yukisada again in Closed Note (2007).

Ms. Takeuchi was part of an impressive cast in the Hollywood-inspired Midnight Eagle (2007), but was handed a much better, recurring role in The Glorious Team Batista (2008) and The Triumphant Return Of General Rouge (2009), both of which are very entertaining. Ms. Takeuchi struck gold again in 2010 when she was cast as detective Reiko Himekawa in the TV movie Strawberry Night, which lead to a follow-up series in 2012 and a big screen movie in 2013.

From 2010 onwards, Ms Takeuchi has chosen an impressive number of feature film projects, including Golden Slumber (2010), Flowers (2010), 1778 Stories Of Me And My Wife (2011), Hayabusa (2011), A Ghost Of A Chance (2011), Cape Nostalgia (2014), The Inerasable (2016), Creepy (2016), The Magnificent Nine (2016), and The Travelling Cat Chronicles (2018).

Ms Takeuchi received critical acclaim for her performance in the Limited TV series Innocent Days (2018), and in particular for her terrific work in the Hulu-HBO series Miss Sherlock (2018), an absorbing gender variation on the classic Sherlock Holmes character. Ms Takeuchi's final TV appearance was the lead role in the legal drama Queen (2019). On the big screen, Ms Takeuchi's final films were A Long Goodbye (2019), The 47 Ronin In Debt (2019), and two Confidence Man features (spin-offs from the hit 2018 TV series), the latest, entitled Episode Of The Princess (released a few months ago), containing what really amounts to a cameo, but she is appropriately referred to as 'star'.

Ms. Takeuchi was a wonderful actor, who had a truly luminescent on-screen presence. It is so sad to see her go in such tragic fashion, and will be sorely missed by many film fans right around the world.

Vintage shows great promise ■ Shaw Wines is a family-ownedand-operated business located in Murrumbateman NSW, the heart of the Canberra cool-climate wine region - locally produced wines from the family's estate-grown fruit.

He has plenty of ability and with the top team at Paddy Payne's.

Last, but not least is National Choice, who flew out in the Guineas Prelude and went like a scalded cat, but stuck on well to run a strong third.

His trainer, Mick Price, said after the race, he will definitely be ridden much quieter come Caulfield Guineas day this Saturday.

I like the New Zealander, Mo'unga, he is strong, and North Pacific, who is not far behind him.

■ Andy Gath is a whiz with Kiwi trotters and the newest stable addition Swiss Miss, a 4Y0 Majestic Son-Motu Miss Anna mare was a brilliant winner of the Boltons Office National Trotters Mobile over 2200 metres at Ballarat on Friday.

Driven by wife Kate, Swiss Miss first up in Oz since January when placed at Alexandra Park Auckland raced in the open from gate four outside the rank outsider Forgot To Remember (gate three) before surging clear in the last lap to win in a breeze from Kyvalley Shaunie (three back the markers) which ran home strongly in the straight to finish 15.4 metres in arrears, with Full Noise third a half head back after trailing the winner all of the way. The mile rate 1-59.7.
