‘Driver blew .316’ ■ Police officers from Caroline Springs nabbed a high range drink driver in Melton West on Friday night (July 31).

Police were patrolling Barries Rd about 9.30pm when they observed a car in front of them driving erratically.

The driver lost control of the vehicle which left the road and went over a number of gutters before coming to rest in a car park.

Members spoke to the driver, a 28-year-old woman from Melton West, who then underwent a preliminary breath test.

She then attended the local station for an evidentiary test where she returned an alleged reading of 0.316 per cent.

Her licence was immediately suspended and she is expected to be summonsed for drink driving related offences.

She was also found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer and was issued a $1652 penalty notice.

The directions by the Chief Health Officer, under the State of Emergency declared in Victoria, have been enacted to help stop the spread of Coronavirus.

■ A Protective Service Officer has been charged following an internal investigation.

The PSO, from the Transit and Public Safety Command, was charged with unlawful assault and assault with a weapon.

The alleged incident was said to have taken place on September 13 last year in Thomastown while the PSO was on duty, said the Victoria Police Media Unit.

■ Addresses in Fawkner and Tullamarine were amongst those raided by Police on Friday in an extensive series of drug raids.

The warrants were executed at 14 residential and commercial properties, as well as the Mongols OMCG club house.

Suburbs included Melbourne, Gowanbrae, Tullamarine, Fawkner, Hillside, Wollert, Greenvale, Docklands, Coburg, Werribee, Richmond, Port Melbourne and South Morang.

Police seized a range of drugs including what is believed to be cocaine, methylamphetamines, cannabis and ecstasy, steroids, a quantity of cash and two firearms.

Detectives from several units including the Trident Taskforce, Echo Taskforce, Drug Taskforce, Purana Taskforce, Caulfield Divisional Response Unit, Fawkner Divisional Response Unit and Dog Squad, along with assistance from Australian Border Force and the Australian Federal Police, executed the warrants from just before 7.40am.

Three luxury vehicles, including a Lamborghini, a Mercedes and a Land Rover, were also seized.

Four people have been charged: ■ A 34-year-old Greenvale man was charged and bailed with drug related offences and pro-

ceeds of crime.

■ A 27-year-old Docklands man has been charged and bailed with possess a drug of dependence ■ A 29-year-old Fawkner man has been charged and bailed with possess firearm ■ A 43-year-old Port Melbourne man has been charged and bailed with possess a drug of dependence ■ A 35-year-old Port Melbourne man, 29-yearold Port Melbourne woman, a Wollert man, a 32-year-old Werribee man and a 35-year-old Gowanbrae woman have been released pending summons.

■ A 28-year-old Wollert man was given a diversion.

The investigations remain ongoing.

■ Maribyrnong Council has updated the West Footscray Community Facilities Plan to incorporate community feedback, in a bid to ensure that the facilities meet the needs and demands of a growing community.

The proposed West Footscray Community Facilities Plan will enable the redevelopment of RecWest Footscray, Shorten and Barrett Reserve, and Johnson Reserve.

The plan provides an overview of the proposed brandnew purpose-built facilities, as well as a variety of safe and accessible public open spaces for all ages, including a larger RecWest facility with new gymnasium, café, indoor stadium, meeting spaces, kitchen spaces and storage areas.

The proposed redevelopment also includes an increase in open space and playgrounds,

Arrest over puppy scam ■ Brimbank Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested and charged a woman following a series of alleged online puppy scams this year.

The alleged deceptions occurred on May 17 and 2, and three times on June 5.

It is alleged the woman advertised puppies for sale online and asked five victims to make a substantial deposit payment for a puppy.

Once the victims paid a deposit the woman allegedly ceased all contact, leaving the victims without a puppy or their money back.

Detectives executed a search warrant at a Thornhill Park address on July 20.

A 29-year-old woman was arrested and subsequently interviewed by Police.

Detectives have since charged the woman with five counts of obtain property by deception and breaching a court order.

She was bailed to appear before Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on April 6.

Hume Observer Sunbury arrest

■ Armed Crime Squad detectives have arrested a third person following a non-fatal shooting in Sunbury in February.

A 31-year-old Roxburgh Park man was arrested and was to be interviewed by police. The arrest follows the shooting of a 57year-old Sunbury man as he got out of his vehicle in the driveway of a Belleview Drive, Sunbury property.

Police previously charged two people in February in relation to this incident.

Maribyrnong Mail 0% rate increase ■ Maribyrnong City Council will have a 0 per cent rate increase for the 2020-21 financial year with the adoption of the Annual Budget and Strategic Resource Plan on on Tuesday, July 21.

Power cuts

■ A Lilydale pensioner has raised concerns about power companies scheduling outages during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Earlier this month, Brian Mier had his power switched off as part of a planned power outage that had been deferred numerous times.

The 74-year-old said his living situation meant the power outage caught him by surprise.

“One of the difficulties I have is that I live in a totally independent cottage behind the main house, so the written directions generally go to those in the front house,” he explained.

Mr Mier has numerous chronic ill-health conditions including Angina, Diabetes 2, Leukaemia, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, Chronic Fatigue and Depression.

Lost Waterhole

■ Lancefield is set to get a new watering hole, with a brewery expected to open in the town early next year.

Inspiration for the brewery, called the Lost Waterhole, came when Lancefield Guesthouse owners Peter and Kate Chiller visited a brewery while on holiday in Noosa Heads.

Ms Chiller thought a brewery would work well in Lancefield and when the couple returned home, they continued to talk about it and started to get the ball rolling.

After talking to local investors, concept plans were drawn and the idea began to snowball.

Theif convicted

■ A 52-year-old Pentland Hills man entered a guilty plea in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court after stealing petrol from multiple locations.

Police lawyer Paul Thomas told the Court on Friday July 17, Michael Storer, also known as Michael Dowd, had multiple charges which involved driving a car with stolen plates and filling his car with petrol without paying.

Wyndham tops list

■ The number of active coronavirus cases diagnosed in Wyndham residents has increased.

This puts Wyndham back at the top of the state’s municipal active coronavirus list, ahead of the municipality of Brimbank.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, 58 cases have been linked to Glendale Aged Care Facility in Werribee, and 52 cases have been linked to BaptCare Wyndham Lodge in Werribee.

A single case has also been diagnosed in a staff member at Homestyle Aged Care in Point Cook.

One man spree

■ A man has been arrested after allegedly inflicting severe hand injuries on another man and a woman during a series of assaults in Dandenong.

The male victim in his 30s was assaulted in Robert Booth Reserve, GrandviewAvenue about 3pm on Sunday August 2, Police say.

He was taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital in a serious, stable condition.

60 jobs at Moonee Valley ■ More than 60 new jobs will be created in Moonee Valley under the Victorian Government’s Working for Victoria fund.

Moonee Valley City Council will offer 63 roles on sixmonth terms on projects including Flemington Works, open space beautification, graffiti removal and arts projects.

Women’s awards recognised ■ Brimbank Council has won the 2020 Susan Grace Benny Award for two Women in Leadership programs - Brimbank First Nations Women’s Leadership and the Brimbank Muslim Women’s Leadership Program.

The Susan Grace Benny Award is part of the State Government’s National Awards for Excellence in Local Government, and recognises female leaders and initiatives in local government which support women in community decision making and management.

■ Last Friday night thieves broke into Messrs. Lampied Bros. shoe store in Barklystreet, West Footscray, 'and removed a quantity, of footwear valued at £200.

It is a lock-up shop, and entrance was.effected by opening the back door with a skeleton key, no damage whatever being done to the premises.

The thieves evidently had some knowledge of boots, and set about their task in a leisurely manner, as all the higher. grade articles were taken and the cheaper lines left behind.

Some good finger prints were found on ihe. boxes, and for this reason there are prospects of the burglars being captured.

Both members of the firm are returned soldiers .suffering from shell shock, and, have been in business only about six months.

Sunshine meetings

■ There was a splendid gathering of ladies in the Sunshine Parish Hall on Tuesday afternoon, when Miss Grace Holder, as representative of the Anti Liquor League, gave an address on "Woman’s Cause."

Miss Holder is an eloquent and forceful speaker; and well deserved the sobriquet often applied to her, "A million h.p. wowser," for, said she, the truest definition of wowser is "we only want social evils redressed."

In times past people worked for temperance, and strangely enough. this was the doctrine now and advocated by the liquor trade.

However, the time had arrived for a decided change in the direction of the reformers' activities, and that meant the removal of the causes of the social evil.

It was high time for the people to cease to think and act parochially, but to think and act in terms of the human race

■ An altercation which occurred in Hopkins-street on 29th July between William Salt and William Carter had its sequel in the Footscray court on Monday, when Salt charged Carter, for whom Mr. Brocket appeared, with having used threatening language. Carter pleaded not guilty.

The parties were neighbours, and, according to the complainant, Carter mounted the dividing fence at the rear and shouted out, "Salt, you white-livered -----, come out into the right-of-way- and Ill-put the--- boot into you." Later Carter said, "You had better tell Salt to say his prayers."

Mr. Caldecott: Was that the extent of his threatening?..

Witness. He said lie would put the boot into me, kill.me, and lay me out. He said if he couldnt get me out he would use a shooter, meaning, I suppose, a revolver.

Mr. Caldecott: Perhaps he meant a peashooter.

Resuming, Salt said the defendant, when he found witness would not have anything to do with him, went out to the front and used further threats in the street.

To Mr. Brocket: He had been summoned for assaulting Mrs. Carter, but the case had been settled out of court.

Carter denied having used bad language or saying what was alleged. He was told Salt had been annoying witness's wife, and he looked over the fence and told Salt to come into the right-of-way and settle the argument.

When he went to the front it was simply to meet his wife, and he did not use threatening language to plaintiff or anyone else.

Mrs. Carter also denied Salt's statement.

Salt had frequently abused witness, and had struck her. The case was dismissed; with 21costs against the complainant.

Steri-Live

■ Arts Centre Melbourne in partnership with the Victorian Parliament and The Push have come together to create Steri-Live, an imagined festival to inspire a state-wide audience impacted by the pandemic.

Steri-Live, ‘The Best Festival to Never Happen’, has been designed by participants of The Channel and The Push’s New Slang program which supports young Victorians interested in developing skills in event creation and management.

This initiative has created an opportunity for young aspiring creators aged 15-17, supported by the Parliament of Victoria, to team up with members from Arts Centre Melbourne, The Push, and creative mentors Giulia McGauran, Beatrice Lewisand Nicholas Campbell, to dream of what an event would look like in today’s current social and political climate.

Van Straten to launch book ■ The release of In the Name of Theatre: the History, Culture and Voices of Amateur Theatre in Victoria by Dr Cheryl Threadgold , is a work long awaited and one that will touch literally thousands of theatre practitioners, thespians and indeed the general community who have spent many happy hours as an audience member.

Taking us back in time to early Australian colonial theatre in 1789, with the first recorded amateur theatre performance in NSW of Irish dramatist George Farquhar's comedy The Recruiting Officer, presented to celebrate the birthday of King George III, Cheryl Threadgold has left little to chance by tracing with extraordinary expertise and no doubt patience in the highs and lows of amateur and community theatre in Victoria over some 230 years.

It is hard to imagine that anyone is left out of this comprehensive compilation of stories of over some 120 operating amateur musical and nonmusical theatre companies in Victoria, with more incisive details of 70 theatre companies serving urban and regional Victoria at this moment.

There are many very heartfelt comments by companies in their quest for survival, joy personified by others as they have told their tales without reservation and as such are recorded in fine detail by Threadgold.

What is sad and acknowledged by Threadgold is the some 380 listings of past amateur theatre companies that with their founders, committees really supported the ongoing foundations of theatre in Victoria over the past century or more.

Such a work as in In the Name of Theatre must be something that every participant and supporter of amateur theatre in Victoria needs for their own resource and enjoyment.

Turn of the Screw ■ While offstage for the moment, the Melbourne Theatre Company continues to present quality productions through the MTC Audio Lab series.

Part One of a dramatic reading of Henry James's classic gothic thriller The Turn of the Screw can be seen on https://www.mtc.com.au/ discover-more/mtc-now-2020/the-turn-of-thescrew-part-one/ until August 7.

The MTC begins this new initiative by experimenting with non-fiction texts and poetry in Great Australian Speeches, recreating chilling ghost stories.

The Turn of the Screw dramatic reading is directed by MTC Associate Artistic Director Sarah Goodes, and re-enacted by Laurence Boxhall, Marg Downey, Robert Menzies and Katherine Tonkin, with sound design by Clemence Williams.

James’s iconic ghost story centres on an unnamed governess who takes a job at Bly, the country estate where her new employer’s niece and nephew live following the death of their parents.

Life at Bly with the children seems idyllic at first, but the governess grows increasingly worried for the safety of her charges when she begins to see the spectral figures of two former employees, Peter Quint and Miss Jessel, haunting the grounds.

● Barbara Hannay ■ Altruistic surrogacy has been around for several decades, but it's not the topic of many novels.

Author Barbara Hannay is always up for a challenge, and decided to delve into its complexities of surrogacy in her latest novel, The Sister's Gift.

Freya is a confident woman for whom the world is her oyster, and decides to give her sister Pearl the ultimate gift of a baby, by being a surrogate mother. And so Freya's niece Billie is born.

Fast forward many years later and it's no fairytale ending - Freya is at rock bottom, divorced, childless and homeless.

Niece Billie gives her the chance to manage the family restaurant on Queensland's beautiful Magnetic Island, but working closely in the family business with her sister and niece is no bed of roses for Freya.

Each woman holds secrets, so the novel follows their path to see if the women can let go of past regrets, or whether things will blow up in their faces.

Initially, Barbara Hannay had a different idea for the novel.

"My original idea was to write about a woman in mid life who loses everything and has to start over, and the friendship she develops with a younger woman, " Barbara said.

"But I always like to have a deeply emotional core to mu stories, and when I dug further, I came up with the surrogacy issues that tied the older and young women together in a much more complex and fraught connection."

Montsalvat has been busy filming, photographing and sharing. Happy birthday La Mama ■ Last week was La Mama's 53rd birthday amid an exciting time during the process of rebirthing the theatre's original home, destroyed by a devastating fire on May 19, 2018.

On that day and thereafter it was made clear that La Mama would rebuild on the property.

The walls that remained were made secure and the bricks from the gables removed and stored.

The rebuild is seen as offering exciting new opportunities including the chance to make La Mama more accessible, to create a dedicated rehearsal space, to improve front of house amenities and theatre facilities, to support the needs of future generations of artists and to make La Mama the best it can be.

The property at 205-207 Faraday St, Carlton, stands in the block bounded by Lygon, University, Drummond and Faraday Sts. Built in 1883 for Anthony Reuben Ford, a Carlton printer, the building had been used as a workshop, a boot and shoe factory, an electrical engineering workshop and a silk underwear factory until the 1960s.

Sometime after that the Del Monaco family assumed ownership of the property, and it was from them that Betty Burstall first rented the building, and established La Mama Theatre in July, 1967, modelled on experimental theatre activities at La MaMa Experimental Theatre Company, New York.

Since then, La Mama has provided welcome opportunities, support and exposure to many playwrights, actors, directors, technicians, film=makers, poets, musicians and comedians, with an alumni that includes David Williamson, Cate Blanchett, Jack HIbberd, Graeme Blundell, Barry Dickins, Judith Lucy, Richard Frankland, Uncle Jack Charles, Christos Tsiolkas and Julia Zemiro and many other established and emerging artists.

Observations Bamberts’ Book of Lost Stories

■ For the month of August, as part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Together With You program, families will be able to immerse themselves into the world of Bambert's Book of Lost Stories.

This Helpmann Award-winning production presented with Barking Gecko Theatre will be streaming a special online season straight to families’ homes from Saturday August 8 until Saturday September 5. In what is a timely reminder of how stories connect us to the world and the power of kindness, the story of Bambert is memorable.

“We are so happy to be sharing Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories online while theatres remain dark across the country. As a tale of an isolated man who sends his stories out into the world, it is a testament to the power stories hold to connect us, bring comfort and help us make sense of the world. Little Bambert’s poetic faith in his stories is a perfect antidote to these challenging times,” says Luke Kerridge, Artistic Director of Barking Gecko Theatre.

The theatrical tale was presented to sell out performances in the Fairfax Studio in October 2017 as part ofArts Centre Melbourne’s Families program. It’s a story about an impossibly small man named Bambert with an enormous love for writing. Tucked away in his quiet attic, his only companions are the characters he has created in his stories.

One day, Bambert decides to set his stories free, to send them out into the world on little balloons, in the hope that they will find a home. But, the stories contain instructions: whoever finds them must return them to Bambert with a stamp from wherever they landed so he knows where his stories have gone. But as each day passes, and no stories return, Bambert’s hope begins to fade.

To further engage and connect families with the themes of this work, there are a number of creative activities to do at home which are inspired by the show. Some examples are: Decorate a wish balloon Bambert writes his stories into a book called his Book of Wishes. In this activity, youngsters can colour in a drawing of the balloon from the show and add their very own wish for the world. All that is needed is a printer and some coloured pencils.

Write a letter to a friend Bambert’s tale reminds us of the power of writing to connect us to one another. During this time of isolation, children will be encouraged to share stories with their friends and loved ones with a handwritten letter.

Stories in the Wall: Radio plays by students Become immersed in these original radio plays inspired by Bambert’s Book of Lost Stories, written and acted by primary students, with original music and sound design by secondary students.

Online puppetry workshop After watching the performance, the audience will be encouraged to make their own puppets at home. In this online video, Puppeteer Iris Radovic teaches how to make puppets with materials found around the house, and then guides to bring the creation to life.

Isolate > Create > Connect Barking Gecko Theatre in collaboration with ThinkArts in India has created a new digital initiative Isolate > Create > Connect to highlight the similarities and differences that children are experiencing right now across the globe. This will become a lasting record of how life in isolation during COVID-19 was experienced by young people.

Every kid’s dream

■ Disneyland Park, originally Disneyland, is the first of two theme parks built at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, opened on July 17, 1955.

It is the only theme park designed and built to completion under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. A phased reopening of the Disneyland Resort has begun at the Downtown Disney District.

The hotels of the Disneyland Resort remain closed and will reopen at a later date. Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure Park remain closed and will reopen at a later date, pending state and local government approvals. This is all due to COVID-19 which is constantly evolving.

On a brighter note the Disneyland brand has brought complete joy to millions of fans all around the world.

When Disneyland opens many Californian families feel that it will be a return to normality. There is something reassuring for families and fans about walking up main street towards Sleeping Beauty’s Castle.

Broadway shutdown ■ Broadway theatre, also known simply as Broadway, refers to the theatrical performances presented in the 41 professional theatres, each with 500 or more seats, located in the Theatre District and Lincoln Centre along Broadway, in midtown Manhattan, New York City.

All shows have been cancelled until 2021. It's the longest shutdown of New York's famed theatre district in Broadway history.

Across America, large venues, stadiums, festivals and indoor events have been cancelled due to the virus.

Viruses are the enemy ■ In a 2015 Ted Talk, Bill Gates declared, "If anything kills over 10 million people in the next few decades, it's most likely to be a highly infectious virus."

He probably should have said "viruses."

As humans crisscross the globe with increasing frequency, dive deeper into natural ecosystems, and contribute to climate change, medical experts warn it's basically inevitable we'll experience more viral outbreaks.

"You asked what keeps me up at night," CDC Director Robert Redfield told a House committee. "I know it's a pandemic flu."

So what have we learned from COVID-19? That we need to do a lot better next time around. Here are a few proposed solutions from medical experts...

More funding: Redfield told Congress that his agency didn't have the money to fulfill the "core capabilities of public health."

The UN says we need to spend $11 billion more to fight global pandemics.

Reforming the WHO: Global cooperation is critical to fighting a pandemic, but critics argue the World Health Organisation has serious flaws in its design.

Strengthening the medical supply chain to ensure critical drugs are available when needed.

More surveillance: As David Eckerwrites in Scientific American, "The best way to prevent pandemics is to apply the same principles as we use to prevent catastrophic forest fires: survey aggressively for smaller brush fires and stomp them out immediately."

■ Large swaths of the internet are a cesspool. Before today, this led to glum assessments about the state of humanity. But a new study out of Michigan State University and California State University at Fullerton, says not so fast: The heaviest users of social media have personalities that enjoy angering and embarrassing others. This is good news.

It means that humanity, on the whole, might suck far less than people on the internet. A fascinating study of 472 university students tracked their usage on two top platforms for 18-to24-year old: Snapchat (2.64 hours per day) and Facebook (2.28 hours per day).

Researchers found that users displaying addictive behavior were also more likely to be motivated to be cruel and callous and to use others for personal gain. "Our results demonstrate that individuals who have a greater preference for these types of rewards display greater problematic use of both platforms," write the researchers, who note that these traits are also associated with narcissism and psychopathy and have previously been correlated with addictive internet use.

They write that social media sites unwittingly "cater to people who seek rewards from being cruel, such as through cyberbullying or various aggressive online behaviors." The researchers hope that their study will help clinicians treat addicted patients by better understanding the social rewards that may be driving them. The same study also found users logging longer hours with more addictive behaviors on Snapchat, but more frequently attempting to quit Facebook.

Troubled streets ■ A violent attack on several members of the NYPD, including police chief Terence Monahan, left one officer with broken bones in his face. In less than a day, police identified and arrested two men suspected of assaulting the officer and the chief. The man who is charged with hitting the chief was released without bail. "Quran Campbell, 25, is accused of socking the highest-ranking uniformed cop several times in the face as Monahan tried to arrest him after Campbell had allegedly punched another NYPD officer and lieutenant near the Manhattan approach to the bridge. Campbell was arraigned on assault charges in Manhattan criminal court and was granted supervised release." Ever since Mayor De Blasio's removal of bail for most arrests, crime has been on the rise in NYC. And since the riots and protests following the George Floyd killing, crime, especially violent crime, has greatly increased. Allowing criminals who are willing to attack police to be back on the street.

Riot hot spot ■ Riots in Portland continued Saturday evening, with one leading to a fire being set inside a police union building and another continuing to target the federal courthouse. Portland has seen over 50 days of protests and rioting, and Saturday proved to be no different. Daily Caller reporters were at the scene where rioters squared off with officers after tearing down fencing and using it to barricade the federal courthouse. Meanwhile, another riot in the city led to the bureau's union headquarters being broken into and briefly lit on fire, according to police. Outside of the Mark O. Hatfield U.S. Courthouse, hundreds gathered and immediately began removing fencing surrounding the park and courthouse that had been erected by officers. Some rioters barricaded the building and began to taunt officers by banging on the walls and yelling for them to come outside. Small fights broke out between those who wanted to continue tearing down fencing and a small group trying to prevent further destruction.

■ It appears that the networks are beginning to think that their outspoken reality stars are more of liability than an asset.

A number of networks had hired a private investigator to probe their own talent's social-media feeds for signs of racism, we're now told that networks are offering stars "goodbehavior bonuses" in their contracts.

Since reality TV seems to rely almost entirely on bad behavior for its entertainment value, we asked our source why networks would want to cultivate a bunch of goody-twoshoes.

■ There would not be a great number of our readers who still remember one of the great American film stars of the B-grade westerns, Buck Jones.

He appeared in more than 160 silent and sound films in a career that spanned almost 30 years and was very popular throughout the world.

Charles Frederick Gebhart was born in Indiana in 1891. Charles served in the US Army from the age of 16 and was honourably discharged in 1913.

He worked as a cowboy on a ranch in Oklahoma and married professional horse rider Odille Osborne in 1915. Charles got a job as a stuntman and bit player for Universal Pictures in 1918.

In the same year their daughter Maxine was born. After a series of small appearances Charles landed his first starring role in The Last Straw and was now known as Buck Jones.

He quickly became one of the top cowboys in films and was an international success as popular as Tom Mix, Ken Maynard,William S. Hart and Hoot Gibson.

His faithful horse was named Silver (later used as a name for The Lone Ranger's horse) and they appeared together in many films. In 1928 he formed his own production company but after the stock market crash of 1929 he lost everything.

He started his own Wild West Show but after that failed Buck returned to working for the major studios and his salary was around $300 a week.

The titles of his B Grade Westerns would not mean a lot to our readers but in his career Buck Jones worked alongside some famous actors including George ‘Gabby’Hayes, Ward Bond, Dick Foran and John Wayne.

His final films included a series of eight features playing US Marshall Buck Roberts. In 1940 Maxine married actor Noah Beery Jnr and they had three children before divorcing in 1954.

In 1937 Buck and Odille built their lavish Western styled ‘dream home\’ in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles complete with stables.

Buck had a fear of fire and designed the house to be fire proof.

Ironically on November 28, 1942 he was the guest of honour at the Coconut Grove Night-

club in Boston when fire broke out and Buck was one of the victims in a disaster that claimed 492 lives.

There were stories around at the time that he had gone back into the inferno to rescue patrons but this theory was discredited in later years.

He had been badly burned and affected by smoke inhalation.

The idol of millions died alone in the Massachusetts General Hospital two days after the fire. He passed away just before Odille arrived at his bedside.

America had just entered the Second World War and Buck Joneshad planned to tourAmerica to help sell War Bonds. Before he died he agreed to a series of Buck Jones comic books and in later years that income helped Odille through a difficult financial situation. His daughter Maxine passed away in 1990 and Odille passed away in 1996 at the age of 95.

Another change of name

■ One of the elementary rules of marketing an event is to keep the brand name consistent over time and avoid burning goodwill. Don’t chop and change. Obviously the folk at Melbourne City Council missed that lecture.

What was White Night Festival, and before that Melbourne International Arts have been binned and will become (drum roll) Rising. The new name will showcase a winter wonderland in 2021 of arts and music centred around Melbourne. It better be good because the locally focused event has a budget of $2 million for shows and exhibitions over May 26- June 6.

Some good news

■ It could be the turning of the tide for the Melbourne Arts and music community. State Government has shelled out $800,000 for a refurbishment of two creative hubs – Abbotsford Convent, and Collingwood Yards.

The grant will be allocated for an assortment of projects from rent relief for current tenants to badly needed rebuilding.

The hubs have a total of 126 creative studio spaces, two galleries, four cafes, a school – even a radio station. A total of 4000 events were held in the hubs last year. A grant well overdue that will become a profitable investment.

Time in the slammer

■ A pretty familiar face of an actor on Aussie produced TV series and commercials has been jailed for importing drugs. We’ll avoid mentioning his name, other than to say his online acting folio shows images of him as a model posing as a fierce looking cop in full police uniform holding a rifle ready to maintain law and order.

Stars: ** Verdict: Los Angeles resident Paul Hogan is reluctantly thrust back into the spotlight as he desperately attempts to restore his sullied reputation after accidentally throwing a snake at a teacher on the eve of being knighted by the Queen.

Light-hearted but sadly mediocre pot-boiler with everyone's favourite Aussie larrikin Paul Hogan ambling through a series manic misadventures like a marionette that makes "Chucky" the Devil Doll funnier and positively human by comparison, and peppered with a starstudded comic cast that try their hardest, but the real question to the creation of this cinematic misfire is simply WHY? Co-writer (with Robert Mond) and director Dean Murphy, whose other Paul Hogan related films include "Strange Bedfellows" (2004) and "Charlie & Boots" (2009) has created an overall journey of inept and uninspired silliness that delivers too much of "that sinking feeling," overbearingly more-so than an intelligent, laugh-out-loud experience that you would expect from Paul Hogan and such a sparkling and talented cast .... the sequence with Shane Jacobson as the "Crocodile Dundee" impersonator with the full-on American accent is "cringe-inducing" to say the least.

Far from "The Very Excellent" as it states in the title, surprisingly, this is an inoffensive time filler, and throughout all its stupidity, blandness and silliness, it actually does have moments that briefly sparkle, a middling too old fashioned B- comedy that has some fun with its legendary character and leading man, and along the way also pokes some fun at the Hollywood establishment and media.

Primarily filmed in Melbourne, with location shots of LA, when all is said and done, this is an inferior effort that could have been, but sadly isn't, a disappointing and the a point embarrassing romp reflective of the all too many corny and forgotten '60s Hollywood rom-coms that have disappeared into obscurity, and like those, but not unlike the original "Crocodile Dundee," you'll have forgotten all about it the moment your head hits the pillow afterwards.

A word of warning first. If you have never seen any of Quentin Dupieux's previous films (Rubber, Wrong, Keep An Eye Out, to name some), you may be unprepared for the strange viewing experience you are about to embark on.

If you have, then you will be glad to hear that this unique film-maker is in fine form, delivering what is undoubtably one of his best films to date.

Oscar winner Jean Dujardin (The Artist, OSS-117) stars as Georges, a seemingly disillusioned man who has just walked out on his wife.

Driving up into the Alpine regions of France, Georges spends a substantial amount of money on a deerskin jacket he has seen advertised.

The elderly gentleman also gives the visitor a camcorder. So smitten by the jacket, Georges believes he is someone to obsess over and admire, but after his wife blocks access to their bank account, the increasingly unhinged Georges uses the camcorder to realise a very odd dream, one suggested to him by the jacket (voiced

by Dujardin), which appears to have taken on a life of its own.

Dupieux takes a one-joke idea and imbues it with some fascinating themes, notably that of identity, personal responsibility, and the abuse of trust on imagery we see on screen.

While the latter could represent the responsibility of the film-makers themselves, it also criticises members of the public (especially online) who distort or fabricate information for their own gain, not caring of the cruel, fatal consequences that can occur to individuals, or entire communities, around them.

In a world of deep division and distrust, seeing this theme taken to surreal extremes makes Georges' actions increasingly unnerving.

Durjardin is terrific as Georges, detailing his gradual moral decline with expert precision, and he is well supported by Adele Haenel (Portrait Of A Lady On Fire), playing a local bartender who gets caught up in Georges' skewed universe. Dupieux continues to give his films an off-kilter visual design, which perfectly ties in with his darkly humorous script.

While ostensibly a comedy, Deerskin has a bleakness underneath, and by the end, the two have entwined to impressive effect.

Used Cars ■ (M) (1980). 113 minutes. Now available on Blu-ray.

A box-office disappointment on its original release due to studio mismanagement, this crackerjack comedy from the team that brought us Back To The Future has thankfully amassed a huge following over the ensuing decades, and for good reason. Kurt Russell (coming off his success playing Elvis Presley in John Carpenter's top-rating TV mini-series, Elvis) plays Rudy Russo, an enthusiastic (if completely untrustworthy) Phoenix used-car salesman, who is trying to raise enough money to run for state senate.

Rudy, along with superstitious salesman Jeff (Gerrit Graham), and aggressive mechanic Jim (Frank McRae), work for Luke Fuchs (Jack Warden), whose lot has fallen on hard times.

His brother, Roy L. Fuchs (also played by Warden), whose car lot is located directly across the street, is both successful and obnoxious, and has his eyes set on taking over Luke's failing business.

A series of unexpected events occur, including the sudden arrival of Luke's grown daughter Barbara (Deborah Harmon), creating much confusion, deception, and chaos.

Though there is a raunch factor present, what makes Used Cars such a delight is its ability to remain completely good-natured, and this is due to sterling work in front of and behind the camera. Russell (Escape From New York, The Thing, The Hateful Eight) is a joy to watch, making an immoral character utterly likeable, and there are equally fine turns from Graham, McCrae and Harmon.

The film is stolen however by a pair of outstanding performances by Warden, who brilliantly (and hilariously) delineates both brothers' personalities.

The screenplay by Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale shows genuine care and affection towards its frequently wayward characters, while supplying an effectively cynical presentation about the continual, conflicting nature of human behaviour.

Zemeckis, as director, injects the material with the same kind of infectious energy he would do with his subsequent films, including Romancing The Stone, the Back To The Future trilogy, and The Walk.

Like the customers who walk on to Rudy's lot, Used Cars got a raw deal when first released, but is now rightfully regarded as one of the best comedies to emerge from the 1980's.

Top races versus the Virus

■ With one of the first main races coming up at the end of the month, the dreaded Virus is not helping at all.

The Memsie Stakes to be run on August 29t, has attracted the interest of some our top trainers, but some of the interstate trainers are a bit concerned.

The trainer of the early favourite for the Memsie, Adam Trinder, hails from Tasmania, and with the current lockdown of 14 days, it causes concern.

Mystic Journey, who won the first All Star Mile last year and fifth in last year's Cox Plate , is the first one in question.

On the next line is the top Western Australian mare, Arcadia Queen.

Without doubt like Mystic Journey, she is all class.

Another that will attract plenty of attention is the New Zealand mare, Melody Belle, who has many Group One credits to her name, and is good in wet conditions.

Victoria's top mare, Rubisaki, is in magnificent form, recently raced in Sydney winning in great style, and is rated one of the best mares racing in Australia, having won all her races in style.

Prepared by leading trainer, Pat Payne, she is at the top of her game, and in my book looks the one to beat on her home track.

Superstorm is another with plenty of talent and sure to chime in as the whips are cracking.

This is along with Catalyst, who is racing at the top of its ability and always puts in.

Fierce Impact by the Japanese champion, Deep Impact, shows that he will be a contender with the way he has been finishing his races.

The WesternAustralian galloper, Real Power, is one of the best going around, and will have the services of her regular race rider, champion Western Australian hoop, Willie Pike.

Of the other top contenders is the good galloper, Trekking, from the James Cummings stable, who never puts in a bad run.

If all they go around in the Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, it will be a crackerjack race

Another that is smart and has raced over most ofAustralia is the Ciaron Maher-David Eustace trained filly, Away Game, who has won several races.

She was most impressive winning the Percy Sykes Stakes back in April, and always gives plenty.

On the next line is the good Victorian filly, Letzglam, a recent winner in good fashion.

■ Maree and John Caldow's highly promising Bacardi Lindy-Titillate filly Tipsy Turvy made it two from two when a decisive victor of the C and M Build Group 2Y0 and 3Y0 Trotters Handicap over 2150 metres. Coming from 10 metres, Tipsy Turvy despite racing in the open for the first half, raced to the front at the bell and defied all challengers to register a strong 8.7 metre margin over Jahbella which trailed for the last lap after leading. Doubled Day ■ Wednesday was double day with Stawell racing in the afternoon and Shepparton at night.

Horsham's Aaron Dunn took the honours at Stawell following the victories of Somebeachsomewhere-Without Guile colt Bondi Lockdown in the Sign Online 2Y0 Maiden Pace over 1785 metres and 5Y0 Western IdealForest Bliss gelding Vanity Bay in the Renown Silverware Pace over 2180 metres.

Bondi Lockdown a heavily supported favourite, was given a sweet one/one trip from gate four, but raced a little green when eased three wide on the final bend as the leader Bonnie Belle kicked away looking home. Once balanced on straightening, Bondi Lockdown showed a great turn of speed to record a runaway 1.7 metre margin over the pacemaker returning a mile rate of 1-57.1.
