Western suburbs trio fined for late-night drive ■ Police say a 26-year-old Deer Park man blew .136 after he and two companions were intercepted at 1.15am Monday.

The red Holden Astra was intercepted after Police spotted three people aboard.

The man refused to provide identification to Police, and he was subsequently arrested and taken to a Police Station where his identity could be confirmed.

The unlicensed driver returned a positive evidentiary breath test. He is expected to be charged on summons with drink driving, unlicensed driving and provide false details.

The two passengers, a 23-year-old from Braybrook, and a 22-year-old female from no fixed address, along with the driver were all found to be in breach of the directions issued by the Chief Health Officer and were each issued a $1652 penalty notice.

Concerns for Grace

● Grace Cox, 13 ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing Point Cook girl Grace Cox. The 13-year-old was last seen at her home address in Villiers Drive about 11am on Thursday (July 23).

Police and family have concerns for her welfare due to her age.

She is known to frequent the Point Cook area.

Anyone who sees Grace or has information on her whereabouts is urged to contact Werribee Police Station on 9742 9444.

Braybrook ramming

■ Police from Footscray have charged four youths following an alleged police vehicle ramming in Braybrook on Wednesday last week (July 22).

after the stolen vehicle they were driving allegedly rammed a police vehicle in Treloar Crescent about 5.20pm.

Police approached the vehicle however the driver drove at the police vehicle a second time causing significant damage to the vehicle.

All four were arrested by police at the scene and have since been charged with the following.

An 18-year-old Derrimut man has been charged with: ■ Theft of motor vehicle; ■ Robbery; ■ Assault; ■ Handle Stolen Goods x 2 The 17-year-old Sunshine West teenager has been charged with: ■ Robbery; ■ Theft of motor vehicle x 2; ■ Assault; ■ Attempted Car Jacking ■ Intentionally Cause Injury and Affray ■ Handle Stolen Goods x 2 The 16-year-old Kings Park teenager has been charged with : ■ Robbery; ■ Theft of motor vehicle; ■ Assault; A 15-year-old Tarneit teen has been charged with: ■ Theft of motor vehicle; ■ Theft of petrol; ■ Attempted car-jacking; ■ Robbery ■ Theft; and ■ Assault The 18-year-old manwas remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

The remaining three teens were remanded and will appear at a Children’s’ Court.

Sunshine girl missing

● Police want to speak with these two women.

■ Investigators from Melbourne Embona Task Force are hoping to identify two women following a robbery where a woman was assaulted in Carlton last month.

Police have been told the victim, a 49-year-old woman, was entering an apartment building on Elgin St when she noticed two other women by the front door about 2am on June 21.

As she let herself in the women followed her before grabbing and assaulting her.

The victim tried to flee, but the offenders continued to threaten and assault her before stealing the woman’s handbag.

Investigators have released a CCTV still of two women who they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

● Tarsha Golightly, 12 ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing Sunshine girl Tarsha Golightly.

The 12-year-old was last seen in Sunshine on Sunday, July19, about 11.20am.

Police hold concerns for Tarsha’s welfare due to her age and the length of time she has been missing.

Investigators have released an image of Tarsha in the hope someone recognises her and can provide information regarding her current whereabouts.

Tarsha is known to frequent Norlane and Corio.

63 new jobs

■ More than 60 new jobs will be created in Moonee Valley under the Victorian Government’s Working for Victoria fund.

Moonee Valley City Council will offer 63 roles on six-month terms on projects including Flemington Works, open space beautification, graffiti removal and arts projects.

■ Fawkner Embona Taskforce detectives have arrested a man in relation to an aggravated burglary in Airport West this month.

It is alleged a man forced entry into a Kendale St home about 8.25pm on July 19 and made demands for cash, producing a firearm before assaulting an occupant inside.

The victim’s vehicle was also stolen from the property but was located a short time later.

The victim was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A 39-year-old Point Cook man has been charged with aggravated burglary, theft of motor vehicle, recklessly cause injury and assault with a weapon.

He was remanded to appear in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (July 25).

Into Work focus ■ IntoWork, a joint venture by Moreland, Yarra and Darebin Councils, is under the spotlight.

Darebin Councillor, Gatano Greco, asked at last week's meeting thay an urgent report be prepared about the not-for-profit company, that exists mainly to promote and facilitate apprenticeship and traineeship jobs for young people.

"For a number of years now Councillors have not received a formal report on the activities of IntoWork. Given the COVID-19 crises and the devastating impact it is having on youth unemployment in our area it would highly relevant for Council to receive a report from IntoWork," said Cr Greco.

M’nong decision ■ Maribyrnong Council's refusal to allow construction of two double-storey dwellings at 39 Frederick St, Yyarraville, has been affirmed by the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

Senior Tribunal Member J.A. Bennett heard that Robert Trajkovski wanted to appeal the Council's decision. Respondents to the case were Andrea and Greg Carfoot, and Peter Fotiadis.

"It is often the case that a proposal which has shortcomings can be ‘fixed’ so that it becomes an acceptable response to site context and planning policies and controls,” said Member Bennett.

“In this instance, I consider that the initial starting point of seeking to construct two dwellings is problematic and I have indicated that a single dwelling would represent a much more acceptable ‘fit’ in terms of internal amenity, avoiding adverse off-site impacts to neighbours such as those caused by overshadowing and providing compliant on-site parking.

“I am not persuaded to set aside Council’s decision and will instead affirm the decision to refuse a permit,"Member Bennett said.

Altona conditions ■ One of Renex Op Co Pty Ltd's applications to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal regarding a property at 541583 Kororoit Creek Rd, Altona, has been dismissed.

A permit allows prescribed industrial waste to be received, treated and stored limited to contaminated soil and does not include prescribed industrial waste in the form of sludges and/or oils.

Justice Quigley, VCAT President, said in this application, Renex sought a review of a decision by the Environment Protection Authority to amend a licence.

COVID in the West ■ There are five cases of COVID-19 linked to a KFC store in Truganina among several outbreaks outlined in information from the Health Department.

Ten cases have also been connected to a Star Track facility in Laverton.

Meanwhile, there are outbreaks of seven cases at Bingo Recycling in West Melbourne and five at Probe Group in the CBD. Also mentioned is a case connected with D’Orsogna Meats in Mickleham, north of Melbourne.

Police were surprised to see a naked man at Pascoe Vale last week (see report, this page). His Toyota Corolla was searched and Police located two loaded firearms, cash and a commercial quantity of drugs. The man was arrested and charged with traffick commercial drug of dependence, prohibited person possess firearm and traffic offences. He was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Police are investigating following a theft and assault at a store in Sunbury last month.

Investigators have been told a man entered the Evans St store about 12pm on June 30.

The man spoke to the store assistant about a refund then picked up a cigarette tin and proceeded to walk out the front door without paying.

The assistant followed the man out of the store and when she asked for the item back, she was punched in the face and had her top ripped.

Police have released images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

A lease for Railway Lot 4 at Ascot Vale, also known as 1 West St,, is being considered for the Ascot Kindergarten Incorporated (Ascot Kinder), which has a long history running a kindergarten from the site. It is understood local residents established the kindergarten in 1946 and the kindergarten is still operating as a community parent managed committee.

Maribyrnong detectives arrest 5 teens after chase ■ Meribyrnong Crime Investigation Unit arrested five teens following a lengthy pursuit in Epping early on Saturday morning.

Investigators first spotted a stolen car in Footscray at the intersection of Ballarat Rd and Gordon St about 3.20am.

Officers followed the stolen car from Footscray, through North Melbourne, Brunswick, Brunswick East, Fitzroy, Carlton North then on to Separation St Northcote where the stolen car increased its speed to over 150kmh.

The Police airwing took up a position and followed the vehicle through Preston, Coburg, Fawkner, Epping before the vehicle was disabled on Cooper St, Epping, where the offenders attempted to flee the vehicle.

Two males and three female teen offenders were arrested at the scene.

Bid to save North Park ■ A response to the petition by residents opposed to redevelopment of the North Park Estate in Woodland St, Essendon, was due to be discussed at last night’s meeting (Tues.) of Moonee Valley Council.

The proposed demolition works include the removal of an administration building and freestanding weatherboard house, removal of 110 trees and vegetation.

The proposed works comprises the construction of a new combined residential and administration building, 27 townhouses, relocation of the existing coach house and refurbishment of the gardener’s shed.

A new internal road network, works to the front fence and an overall landscaping scheme are also proposed.

The petition is directed at the application with Heritage Victoria.

150 jobs for locals ■ Brimbank Council has secured up to $8 million to employ more than 150 local unemployed people to deliver and work on Council projects and initiatives in response to COVID-19, as part of the Victorian Government’s Working for Victoria initiative.

More than 300 rate relief applications have been approved as part of Brimbank Council’s Financial Hardship Policy

■ Moonee Valley Council is considering naming each of the 143 Canary Island Date Palms located along the median strip of Mt Alexander Rd between Shamrock St and Leake St, Essendon, after a past or present prominent and well-regarded resident who has resided within the City of Moonee Valley. Each year up to five of the Canary Island Date Palms would be named in honour of those residents.

Moreland Courier Naked at P. Vale

■ Police arrested a naked man in Pascoe Vale last week after firearms and drugs were located in his vehicle. Officers were called to Austin Crescent, Pascoe Vale about 10am after witnesses reported that a man had leapt from his car and started running through parkland. It was further reported to police that he was removing clothing as he was running. Officers attended and found a 24year-old man from Pascoe Vale naked and hiding in a garage.

Brimbank’s crucial support ■ Providing crucial support to boost COVID19 testing capabilities in the Brimbank municipality is part of its response during the health emergency.

The Council says its successfully campaigned for government funding for important local projects, and launched an initiative to help local businesses.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou, said the past month saw added pressures on the community due to high numbers of residents testing positive for COVID-19.

Postcodes in our municipality were already back in Stage 3 “stay at home” restrictions, before being joined by the rest of metro Melbourne and Mitchell Shire on July 8.

“We recognise these restrictions have been difficult for our community and businesses, and we are committed to supporting them through this period,” Cr Papafotiou said.

“As always, the health and safety of our community and our staff remains our top priority,’ Since the strategy was adopted, 67 per cent of the identified actions are now complete.

A further 31 per cent of actions are underway and 2 per cent are ready to be rolled out.

Council has secured $2 million in funding for the St Albans Health and Wellbeing Hub.

The charging station has had 682 charging sessions delivering 11,405 kWh of charge to electric vehicles in the community. The Council has a target to achieve zero net emissions by 2030.

Plan for Green Gully Reserve ■ Brimbank City Council has adopted a plan for a new sports ground and associated facilities located at the 10 hectare northern end of Green Gully Reserve in Keilor Downs, following six weeks of community consultation.

The plan includes: ■ Senior size oval to cater for numerous sports ■ Multi-purpose pavilion with two change rooms ■ Sports lighting ■ Coaches’ boxes ■ High ball protection fencing ■ Car parking (100 spaces) ■ Picnic and playground area ■ Pathway network ■ Road extension (McRae Boulevard) New access road (Green Gully Close) ■ The Green Gully Reserve Northern Precinct Enhancement Plan provides an outline for a senior-sized sports oval, pavilion, and associated facilities, such as female friendly change rooms. he draft 2020-21 annual budget includes $1.4 million for the environmental off sets and detailed design of the site. Funding for construction works at Green Gully Reserve will be part of future capital works budget processes.

The two charging stations are now being installed, one at the Laverton Community Hub, which is complete, and the other at Nelson Place in Williamstown, which is scheduled for installation within the next three weeks.

The charging stations feature two connectors meaning two vehicles can charge at once and they will be free to use for a trial period.

The 22 kW AC charging stations can take three to four hours to fully charge a vehicle, depending on the vehicle and its battery.

■ Cr Martin Zakharov proposed a motion to last week’s meeting of Maribyrnong Council that the Council acknowledge the 75th anniversaries of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by reaffirming its commitment to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Cities Appeal.

August 6-9 marks the 75th anniversaries of the nuclear bombings of those Japanese cities.

“The 75th anniversaries of the bombings present an opportunity for reflection, remembrance and action. Maribyrnong City Council is part of a growing number of councils across Australia and the world that has endorsed the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons Cities Appeal having done so at its meeting held December 10,” Cr Zakharov.

Town Hall banners ■ Moreland Councillors volyed unanimously this month that the City produces and displays banners that contain an anti-racism message on the Coburg and Brunswick Town Halls in solidarity with the world-wide antiracism movement sparked by Black Lives Matter.

Councillors agreed to note “the display of such banners would be consistent with Council paying its respects to the traditional owners of this land, its Reconciliation Action Plan and an indication of its recognition that similar acts of racist violence have occurred against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.”

Const. John Patrick Edney has been found guilty of one count of assault with weapon and one count of unlawful assault.

Sen. Const. Brad McLeod has been found guilty of three counts of unlawful assault.

Sen. Const. Florian Hilgart has been found guilty of one count of unlawful assault.

Tanglewood OK

■ Murrindindi Shire Council last week voted 5-2 to allow a permit for the Tanglewood Festival to be held annually at a Thornton property for each of the next five years.

The event is proposed to allow for 3000 patrons in the first year with the potential to grow by 250 patrons each year until the fifth year which will allow for 4000 patrons.

The proposed event is promoted as a small boutique music and arts festival consisting of musical performances, cultural activities and artistic workshops.

Four COVID cases

■ Four Department6 of Education employees working at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre have returned positive tests for COVID-19.

A spokesperson from the Department of Justice said the department would continue to work with the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services to minimise any potential risks for inmates and staff.

“All young people tested here have returned a negative result for COVID-19,” the spokesperson said.

■ A store at Pacific Werribee underwent a deep clean after one of its staff members tested positive for COVID-19.

The shopping centre’s manager, Patricia Gardiner, confirmed the positive test but did not tell Star Weekly which store the employee was based at.

“The safety and wellbeing of our customers, retailers, staff, contractors and suppliers at Pacific Werribee is our priority and we take this notification extremely seriously,” Ms Gardiner said.

Moreland confectionery factory at Sydney Rd ‘bar’ ■ In the years surrounding World War II, Melbourne had ‘Tarax’ Bars which sold non-alcoholic beer and soft drinks.

One such outlet was at 151 Sydney Rd, Moreland, which also doubled as a confectionery manufacturing business.

The operator of Golden Ray Confectionery and the Tarax Bar was my paternal grandfather, Allan, assisted by wife Althea, sons Jim and Alan, and daughter ‘Girlie’ (Violet Althea).

The fanily had moved from Bendigo where they had operated grocery stores.

Their move to 21 Florence St, Moreland, was in 1938. Allan was a commercial traveller for a grocery firm during the day, and in his spare time made snowballs for a Moreland grocer.

He used a hand beater for this manufacturing operation which would have been exhausting.

Later, they purchased the shop and dwelling at 151 Sydney Road, Moreland, and although warned by several business people that they were on the wrong side of the road to attract business, they went ahead and opened a confectionery and milk bar.

Half the shop was partitioned, so that Allan and Althea could manufacture marshmallows and toffees, toffee apples, barley sugar, butterscotch and boiled lollies.

The hours were demanding; starting manufacture early in the morning, opening the shop at 9am, and closing around 11pm.

They soon attracted customers and there was a great demand from wholesalers for their wellknown snowballs and ‘biffs’ (coloured snowballs).

Another product was ‘Rocky Road’, made from marshmallow, peanuts and chocolate.

Customers came from far afield over the weekends to buy novelties such as chocolatecoated animal shaped marshmallows.

During World War II, their elder son Jim became old enough to volunteer for War service and joined the Army.

At this time Allan applied for the position of Manager of a Tarax Bar in Swanston St, Melbourne.

The Managing Director, Mr Pethard, from Bendigo, interviewed Allan.

Mr Pethard said he regarded Allan’s experience as a grocer made him the most qualified for the position.

The job involved the management of meals for customers, the soft drink and milk bars. Apart from this position at night into the early hours of the morning, he still found time to manufacture.

Allan was able to become an agent for Tarax with the family shop in Sydney Rd. Tarax was then an exclusive soft drink, and Tarax bars were by appointment. Up to this stage, Althea and daughter ‘Girlie’ were managing the shop, with assistance from Alan when he came home from school.

There was a large passage at the side of the shop and Allan made large bins to hold many dozens of bottles, into which he would chip blocks of ice. This was apart from two large shop refrigerators.

At this time, Tarax brewed non-alcoholic drinks called Tarax Stout, and Bitter. T here was never a short supply of chilled drinks, and it was not unusual during hot spells to see customers queued outside the shop, waiting to be served after the customers inside the shop had quenched their thirst.

After Jim’s return from service in the Middle East as a Sergeant, he was promoted to the post of Warrant Officer II at the Bandiana Workshops, near Albury.

It was here that Jim met his future wife, Marjory Lawrence. After their marriage, and Army discharge, they lived with Allan and Althea until buying their first home at East Preston.

Allan and Jim decided to go into partnership with the confectionery, and a factory was built at the rear of the Sydney Rd shop.

The business was named ‘Golden Ray Sweets’. The business was quickly expanding and Alan recalled: “It was decided to move to a larger factory, and at the same time another

■ A man named Charles Clark was charged at the local court on Monday with having been drunk and disorderly in Little John-street on 24th inst.

Constable Bristow said he was on duty at the station at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday, when two small children, half clothed, called him to their home.

The constable found the wife with a young baby and the rest of the family out on the road. They were half clothed, and the husband was in bed with his clothes on.

In imposing a fine of 5/- the chairman warned the defendant that the house would be kept under surveillance by the police, and if Clark were guilty of such misbehaviour again he would get into serious trouble.

■ The PAFS Loyal Waratah Lodge No. 16 met at the Mechanics' Hall on Tuesday, 20th inst, W.M Sis. Abrahams presided. Sis. Arnold and Taylor reported re the dispensay anniversary. The lodge adjourned early in favour of a dance. which was given by the past mistresses of the lodge.

Sis. Bishop proposed the toast. "The Guests," and Bro. Swift ably responded.

There was a good attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. The next meeting will be held on 3rd August.

Alleged theft ■ At the Footscray Court on Monday a remand of one week was granted to George Jackson, a resident of Carlton, who was charged with having on the 8th inst. stolen a pair of boots, valued at 10/-, the property of Henry Swann. Jackson was ordered to find. one surety of £25.

house had to be bought, which was at Heidelberg.

In 1949, a larger factory was available nearer home in Banksia St, Bulleen, and it became a real family family business with all working there.

After a short time through national events, supplies were hard to come by, unless you were willing to pay double the price through other channels.

Allan did not believe in this type of business, and it was mutually agreed that the business should disband due these circumstances.

Allan was appointed a canteen manager for the Australian Paper Manufacturers at Fairfield.

At a later stage when Jim was an executive for Standard Motors at Port Melbourne, the position of Canteen Manager became available, and Allan was appointed.

Allan long died in 1975.

Close to Jim’s retirement, he opened the James Long Confectionery Co. (named after his great grandfather) at 56 Newlands Rd, Coburg, after extensive works had to be completed at the shop because of Coburg Council rules. The factory produced ‘Jim’s Snowballs’.

■ An extraordinary story was unfolded at the local court on Thursday, when Clara Margaret Ryan sued her husband, James Joseph Ryan, for maintenance.

Mrs. Ryan said she was married in 1899; and lived happily. with her husband till two years, ago, when he brought a young woman to their homeand showed her marked attention, Her husband suffered from "bovine tuberculosis."

He received £375 as compensation under.the Act, and on 2nd May, 1919, left Bendigo for Melbourne, ostensibly for medical treatment. He left her 15/-, and since then she had received notling from him.

He had gone to Adelaide with a woman named Kiely, and had lived there with her.

Mr. Menzies, who appeared for Ryan, objected to this as not being relevant.

The defence wai based on Ryan's inability to support his wife, He had been very ill in Adelaide, and had only £50 left, and was unable to work: Dr. Harry Box said Ryan had a curvature of the spine, which he thought was of a tubercular nature; an abscess on his side, and a tubercular affection of the right wrist.

He was unfit to work, and the man's chances of resuming work in the future were very remote.

Ryan admitted leaving hi s wife, but denied that he had lived with Kiely in Adelaide or anywhere else.

He had been in two hospitals in South Australia, and was living with his sister in Footscra y.

A suggestion by the Bench that de'fendant give his wife half of what he had left was agreed upon and an order was made to this effect, the case to be adjourned for six months.

Le Cœur sees the band adding new colours to their trademark tapestry of medieval instruments, electronic beats, textured guitars and female vocals, with cello from new member Francesca Mountfort, a variety of guests, musicians from around the globe and rhythms created from the sampled sounds of in utero recordings of heartbeats.

The album is a journey through loss, anxiety, hope and new life and runs the gamut of experience from dark despair to swirling elation.

From the most organic form of rhythm possible, the human heart, to synthetic mechanical beats, Le Cœur is the melding of human and machine, but the machines are always subservient to the humans in control.

Le Cœur begins with Hall Of Leaves, featuring Rüdiger Maul of Faun, and includes the dark fairytale single Unlikely Impossible as well as the latest single Too Late She Cried: an upbeat electro-medieval ode to soldiering on in the face of anxiety and inactivity.

Le Cœur Parts I and II feature in utero heartbeats combined with electronic beats and the organic nature of dulcimer, lute and cello.

Also featured is a tribute to pioneering legend of Australian underground music Robert ‘Bo’ Boehm in the form of a cover of Persistence Of Visionby Bo's groundbreaking shoegaze/psychedelic/industrial band Clown Smiling Backwards.

A lot has happened to the members of Dandelion Wine since the release of 2010's All Becompassed By Stars, starting with the band's re-location back to Melbourne from their adoptive home in Berlin.

Perhaps the biggest change has been the arrival of children into the world - with all members of the band now firmly entrenched in their new roles as parents, a whole new set of demands have had a huge impact on their lives ... not to mention their sleeping patterns.

Along the way their former record label in Germany, Black Rain, closed its doors, leaving them without a label and in the world of total DIY. Somehow Dandelion Wine still managed to embark on three international tours in this time (with kids in tow no less) and complete their most cohesive work to date.

Lithuanian label Dangus has already released a limited edition CD version of 444 copies in the Baltic States to coincide with Dandelion Wine's most recent European tour but now the album is being officially released to the world.

Guests on the album include Rüdiger Maul (Faun, DE) on frame drums and percussion, HakGwai Lau (Chock Ma, Hong Kong) on erhu (Chinese two string fiddle), Denni Meredith (from former labelmates Brillig, SouthAustralia) on bass,Phil Coyle (Trappist Afterland, Deep Water Orchestra) on frame drums and Pete McKeown (The Revenant, Heligoland) on bass and Fender VI. VAULT SESSIONS ■ Arts Centre Melbourne and the Australian Music Vault are hosting a new project called Vault Sessions, streaming to audiences on Thursdays from 'the best seat in the house' - their couch.

The first run of artists includes Alice Skye, Ziggy Ramo and Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, playing intimate sets from Hamer Hall.

Cash Savage and her heavy rock band the Last Drinks will stream on Thursday, August 6 at 7.30pm and will be available for two weeks until Thursday, August 20 at 7.30pm.

Come To Where I Am ■ After a rigorous selection process, 16 new plays about the places that shape us are destined for both live performance and digital distribution for Come to Where I Am – Australia, the new writing and performance initiative from Paines Plough and Critical Stages Touring, an Australian national touring theatre company.

In response to a rapidly changing world, where all touring and live performance is currently on hiatus, Paines Plough launched Come To Where I Am. In partnership with theatres across the UK and beyond, 30+ new short plays from writers about the places they call home have been shared with online audiences as visual-audio pieces.

All donations made to this project go directly towards employing writers to deliver more new writing during COVID-19.

Come to Where I Am – Australia was initially created to support the development of seven new stories, engaging writers in regional and remote towns to craft a snapshot of what life is like in their part of the country right now.

The program has been recently expanded to accommodate an additional nine writers thanks to a COVID-19 support grant from the Australia Council for the Arts and private donations.

The 16 stories come from across the country and represent a mix of rural, regional, suburban and city experiences from a diverse group of authors that includes award-winners Samah Sabawi (Vic.), MaryAnne Butler (NT), Jeanette Cronin (Qld), Vanessa Bates (NSW) and comedian Jon Bennett (SA).

Highlights include a story of music and connection between generations in Western Sydney from James Elazzi (Lady Tabouli); a treechange tale from Tahli Corin (One for the Ugly Girls) and Joshua Tyler (Top End Wedding); and a new piece weaving together old and new stories of the Noongar people from Wilman Noongar artist Ian Michael (HART).

It is intended that the short films will live beyond their initial digital premieres, with live performances to be staged at venues across the country when restrictions are lifted. They will also be hosted on Paines Plough’sYouTube channel.

Come to Where I Am – Australia is part of a broader digital production and engagement strategy undertaken by Critical Stages touring in response to the pandemic.

● Katelyn Bannister and toddler Hugo enjoying Baby Bilby Sings ■ Victorian Opera has been a trailblazer in introducing youngsters to opera, either by involving them as performers or in creating accessible operas for the next generation of opera goers.

With no live performances with an audience in the time of COVID, VO has continued its reputation for innovation, creating a new interactive online story and songbook called Baby Bilby Sings that you can enjoy with the ankle biters.

Not being yet blessed with grandchildren, I gave it a trial run on my own and I'm hooked.

The story follows the adventurous young Baby Bilby who decides he is off to see the world, and he does it by visiting many different countries, each with a strong connection to a particular opera.

He visits the worlds of La Traviata, The Barber of Seville, and The Magic Flute, among others.

Each adventure includes a button you push to hear music from all those famous operas, with repurposed lyrics from accompanist Phoebe Briggs and Victorian Opera head Richard Mills.

Adult opera goers will enjoy hearing the glorious voices of Victorian Opera's younger singers - Carlos Barcenas, Raphael Wong, Shakira Dugan, Eliza Bennetts O'Connor and Rebecca Rashleigh.

Victorian Opera's Education Manager, Ioanna Salmanidis, is delighted that this book will help children of all ages engage with opera.

"Through reading our book, we hope that children across Victoria and far beyond will experience just how special opera can be," Ioanna explained.

Artistic director Richard Mills composed the refrain heard throughout the story, and is pleased that Victorian Opera has been able to create this online project.

Victorian Arts Lumas Gallery ■ Lumas Gallery and Sequana Arts Grant announce the first recipient of their Arts Grant Program: Prudence Bansemer from Victoria.

Prudence's winning submission Pink Lake was inspired by the increased threat of climate change and increasing awareness of the importance of global ecosystems.

Pink Lake was shot at Melbourne's Westgate Park where Saltwater Lake's rosy hue has become a tourist attraction.

The lake's pink colour is due to a combination of high salt levels, high temperatures and lack of rainfall. The lake - which first turned pink in 2012 and has been changing colour every summer since - could be considered a litmus test of the effects of climate change.

The program marks both Lumas Gallery and Sequana Partners commitment and dedication in support of ventures and community programs at grass level.

The program aims to empower artists by recognising the craft and livelihood of the incredible pool of talented Australian artists.

Applications for the next monthly grant are open until Friday (July 31) and will be awarded each month until December providing a oneoff grant of $4000 as well as host each winner's work in an exhibition in January to showcase the six winning artworks.

Tolarno Galleries The Sun Also Sets - an exhibition of new works by Danie Mellor Comprising sepia-tone paintings overlaid with indescent wash as well as large-format photomontages, the series signals a new approach for the Mackay-born artist.

The local community fought back to save their building. Numerous organisations and individuals were involved in the fight to save the building, such as United Neighbourhood of the Hills Save Our Sherbrooke Association, Save the Dandenongs League and others.

Among the many who marched in the streets to demand that the shire office become a cultural centre for the community were indigenous artist and local resident Lin Onus.

In 1997 the first motion put through the newly elected Shire of Yarra Ranges Council by Cr Louis Delacretaz was that the Sherbrooke offices be taken off the market.

A business plan for a proposed Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre was presented to Council and a Special committee of Council was established to form the DRCC. It became an independent incorporated body in mid-1998 with Louis Delacretaz as President.

The Vision The centre's vision was "to be a vibrant community cultural centre offering a total Dandenong Ranges arts, cultural and environmental experience providing for a diverse range of local need".

Neil and Lin Onus had been the best of friends. Just days after the largest meeting to establish the Cultural Centre, Lin died suddenly of a heart attack.

Neil named the gallery 'Burrinja' in memory of Lin. 'Burrinja' was Lin's YortaYorta name meaning 'star'.

In the year 2000 the DRCC became a Regional Arts Victoria Arts Council member.

Together A real turning point in the future direction, growth and tenure of the cultural centre came in 2000 with the negotiation of a three way partnership between the Shire of Yarra Ranges, Neil McLeod fine arts and the DRCC. Neil McLeod donated a million dollar indigenous art collection to Council, with its home to e at Burrinja gallery.

The DRCC took on the management of the collection on behalf of the shire, as well as the gallery and café.

From 2001 the operations of the DRCC and Burrinja were combined under the not-for-profit cultural association.

Refining the Vision: In 2001 the Committee developed and adopted a new more succinct vision that brought together the aims and vision of the Centre building community through art.

The centre undertook a comprehensive view of its activities and spaces, its past and future.

The focus is needed to be on what the centre does, not its name.

In choosing just one unifying name Burrinja was the obvious choice, its heritage with Lin Onus grounds it in the history of the centre and the fight to save the building.

It also places the centre in the arts, in indigenous arts and in activism in local community.

Digital Theatre Festival ■ The National Institute of Dramatic Art this month invites audiences around the world to join the journey of Ghost Lights, a transmedia production being staged as part of NIDA’s 2020 Digital Theatre Festival.

“At the beginning of this pandemic, every theatre in the world was closed. That never happened before,”said Director, projection and new media artist Katy Alexander.

“We were seeing all these amazing images of empty cities, like the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House with no one around, and that got us thinking about empty theatres – where do all the characters go? That’s really where the concept came from.

“As all performance venues across the world went dark, the old tradition of the ghost light was revived - leaving on a single naked bulb on a stand inside the theatre - to ensure that an empty theatre is kept ‘alive’ and never left in total darkness,” she said.

Australian and international audiences are now invited to take part and help keep ghost lights, characters and the magic of theatre alive by uploading a monologue on social media.

16 Lullabies

■ Melbourne-based composer Hugh Crosthwaite last week released an album of 16 Lullabies recorded by Australian pianist Stefan Cassomenos.

In response to the intensity of the global pandemic, the lullabies were written in less than a month and recorded over two sessions with engineer and producer Myles Mumford.

On composing the lullabies, composer and producer Hugh Crosthwaite said: “This project has been such a joy. Each lullaby is for a specific person, the children of my closest friends and family.

“It’s precious to me because each dedicatee is precious. Working with Myles and Stefan has similarly been wonderful. There is something beautiful about three fellas, working together, applying their hard-earned expertise, for the sole purpose of creating beautiful gentle music.

“Lullabies provide a safe space for the listener to unwind; to celebrate our connection to music as human beings.

■ Qantas's last passenger jumbo jet, the Boeing 747, has departed Australia for the final time.

Flight QF7474 flew out from SydneyAirport last Wednesday afternoon (July 22).

The jumbo jet is headed to retirement in the 'Bone Yard' in the Mojave Desert in the United States, after Qantas brought forward the scheduled retirement of the fleet by six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aircraft has served Australians for almost 50 years and revolutionised aviation.

Alan Joyce, Qantas Chief Executive Officer, said, "It's brought the Queen in, it's brought the Pope in, it's been there for every Olympics team since the 1984 Olympics."

The 747 service has also rescued Bali bombing survivors and Australian residents trapped in Wuhan when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

"It's a bittersweet moment, this aircraft has changed world aviation, Australian aviation and Qantas," Mr Joyce said.

Qantas is the largest non USA carrier using Los Angeles Airport. There were 43 flights between LAX and Australia every week.

Fifty years ago the 'Queen of the Sky' Qantas 747's opened up aviation to ordinary Australians travelling overseas.

Australian baby boomers would recall their first flight on Qantas overseas and the magical time was when it landed back in Australia you would hear on the overhead speakers, the song I Still Call Australia Home.

The Qantas A380's are also in line to be sent to the 'Bone Yard' in the Mojave Desert as its days are numbered.

What will emerge out of COVID-19 will be a more efficient and sleeker airline.

■ Over the Fourth of July weekend, with streams of sweat pouring down his face, Joey Chestnut broke his own world record for hot dog eating, by downing 75 hot dogs (with buns) in 10 minutes at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

It was his 13th win at the annual contest.

And Miki Sudo set a women's record, 48.5 hot dogs, to grab her seventh straight.

Because of the Coronavirus crisis, the event was held virtually this year, and Dr James Smoliga was glued to his screen, rooting for new records.

For the past few months, Dr Smoliga, a veterinarian and exercise scientist, had been working on a mathematical analysis of the maximum number of hot dogs that a human could theoretically consume in 10 minutes.

"The answer is 83," said Dr. Smoliga, a professor at High Point University in North Carolina.

He has now published the full analysis, which calculated this number based on 39 years of historical data from the Nathan's contest, as well as on mathematical models of human performance that consider the potential for extreme athletic feats.

Virus-laden droplets ■ A large cloud of virus-laden droplets can be released high into the air when you flush a toilet and it can hang around long enough to be inhaled by others, a new study says.

The new Coronavirus can be found in the feces of infected people, and this finding suggests it could be transmitted through the use of toilets, according to the authors.

The study was published June 16 in the journal Physics of Fluids.

"One can foresee that the velocity of upward-flowing aerosol particles will be even higher when a toilet is used frequently, such as in the case of a family toilet during a busy time or a public toilet serving a densely populated area," study co-author Ji-Xiang Wang, of Yangzhou University in China, said in a journal news release.

■ A Washington Post editor said that the Texas Rangers team name "must go."

On the same day that the National Football League's Washington Redskins announced it would do away with its 93-yearold team name, Global Opinions editor Karen Attiah said that the Major League Baseball team must deal with "the violent and racist implications of its name."

"To know the full history of the Texas Rangers is to understand that the team's name is not so far off from being called the Texas Klansmen," Attiah wrote in an op-ed for the liberal newspaper.

Attiah, who grew up in Dallas, reminisced about going to Rangers games with her father as a child, but said at the time she didn't know the Rangers "were a cruel, racist force when it came to the nonwhites who inhabited the beautiful and untamed Texas territory".

The Texas Rangers were unofficially created by Stephen F. Austin in 1823 as a statewide investigative law enforcement agency, headquartered in the capital of Austin.

The Rangers stopped the assassination of President William Howard Taft and pursued such outlaws as Bonnie and Clyde.

More than 120 have died in the line of duty.

■ New Yorkers are rapidly discovering why European-style outdoor dining isn't really a thing there. According to a report from NBC New York, diners who have been forced outside by pandemic restrictions keep getting attacked by the city's greedy rats. Giacomo Romano, who owns an Italian restaurant in SoHo, told the network: "We have this big restriction of only outdoor seating and last night, a customer had a baby rat running on his shoe and I let you just imagine his reaction." Romano said he's written to city leaders begging them to do something about the rodents if his customers are going to be eating outside for the foreseeable future. "If they know every month they need an extermination then do it," said the restaurateur. NBC New York asked the city if it plans to do anything to tackle the rats, but reports that it has, so far, heard nothing back.

■ The Catholic Church raked in at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed loans meant to help small businesses survive the coronavirus pandemic, a new report says.

Catholic dioceses, parishes, schools and other entities made extensive use of a loophole in the Feds' Paycheck Protection Program to snag at least 3500 forgivable loans as the pandemic scuttled worship services across the country, an Associated Press review found.

Some $200 million went to roughly 40 dioceses that have paid out hundreds of millions of dollars to victims of sexual abuse in recent years including the Archdiocese of New York, which receivedat least $28 million for its executive offices while its iconic St Patrick's Cathedral received at least $1 million, according to the Friday report.

The so-called PPP loans were generally limited to businesses and nonprofits with fewer than 500 employees.

But Catholic officials helped lobby the Trump administration to exempt religious groups from that rule, which would have disqualified many dioceses.

Data released this week indicate Catholic institutions may have bagged as much as $3.5 billion in forgivable loans that helped them retain at least 407,900 jobs placing the church among the program's largest beneficiaries.

Americans are more tired ■ The Coronavirus pandemic has many Americans saying they're more tired than they've ever been before.

According to a new survey, six-in-10 Americans say their sleep routine during quarantine has them feeling more exhausted than they've ever felt in their life.

The poll of 2000 adults, commissioned by Leesa Sleep, finds nearly 70 per cent agree their sleeping habits have become quite inconsistent.

Another 63 per cent think their sleep schedules might be permanently ruined by the pandemic.

Working remotely has its benefits, like sleeping in later, but it may be creating some bad habits too.

Forty-four percent say they stay up later since they don't have to commute to work.

Nearly half of respondents admit they get out of bed only 10 minutes before their remote workday starts.

It's no wonder so many people are tired. Many are staying up late to binge watch their favourite TV shows.

Researchers report 67 per cent of Americans are staying up until the early hours of the morning to sneak in a few more episodes each night.

The poll also finds Americans are also to getting an average of two naps per week during their workdays.

■ I vaguely remember watching the Our Gang short films at my local cinema in the late 1940s and I used to read the Our Gang comics.

It was a strong influence on young children and we formed gangs of our own so that we could play together, have fun and imitate the characters in the film series.

My favourite was Carl ‘Alfalfa’ Switzer because he had a funny strand of hair sticking up on top of his head.

The series was originally titled The Little Rascals but it was changed to Our Gang in 1938 over a copyright issue.

Carl Dean Switzer was born in Paris, Illinois, in 1927. As a child Carl and his older brother Harold sang in local shows.

In 1935 the boys were visiting their grandparents in California and wanted to see the studios where the famous Little Rascals series was filmed.

They did an impromptu performance of hillbilly songs and comedy at the studio cafeteria where they were spotted by the producer Hal Roach.

Roach was so impressed with the boys that he cast them in one of the short films.

Carl was given the name of ‘Alfalfa’ and Harold became ‘Deadpan’ or ‘Slim’.

Carl became a very popular character along with George ‘Spanky’ McFarlane, Billy ‘Buckwheat’ Thomas and Daria Wood.

In 1941 Carl Switzer left the series at the age of 14.

Carl married Dian Collingwood in 1954 they had one child but the marriage only lasted for two years.

By 1956 he was reduced to playing an uncredited slave in The Ten Commandments.

Carl dreamed of making a big comeback but

He did earn a reasonable living working as a dog breeder and hunting guide with some notable clients such as Roy Rogers and James Stewart.

On the night of January 21, 1959, Carl had been drinking heavily at a bungalow home in the San Fernando Valley and got involved in an argument with a man over a payment of $50.

The argument turned into a fight and when Carl allegedly charged at the man with a knife he was shot in the stomach and died on arrival a the hospital.

The trial resulted in a verdict of “justifiable homicide” but there are some who think Car was murdered and he only held an unopened pen knife. But after all this time who knows the real truth?

Carl Switzer was buried at Hollywood Memorial Park.

He was only 31 – and like many famous child actors, Hollywood turned its back on him when he grew up.

■ One of the real characters of the early days of Melbourne TV, Ralph Baker has died of Myeloma, aged 81.

Ralph was a born entertainer, starting at local theatre, then to minor comedy sketches for In Melbourne Tonight on GTV-9.

Next stop was ATV-0 – now Ten - the new station on the block and Ralph took a job in the Props office .

ATV-0 was screening late, late night movies, mainly re-runs of scarry goulish films. Ralph raided the Props cage and created Deadly Earnest, a vampire character leaping out of a coffin. Deadly was an instant success with a young audience. He went onto floor manage pop shows - Kommotion, Uptight, Go!!Show before launching his own p0uppet theatre. Vale Ralph.

Rating: MA15+ Length; 120 Minutes.

Stars: *** Review: The story of a group of scouts who worked with the French Resistance to save the lives of thousands of orphaned children by leading them to safety cross country and through mountainous terrain with the Nazi's in pursuit to Switzerland during World War II. Gripping and fascinating story based on true event holds interest throughout, and even though formulaic in approach, there's barely a dull moment as the events unfold, an historical journey of arrogance, brutality tenacity, survival and heart that is sure to surprise many along the way, most notably when one of the youthful key heroic protagonists is revealed to be future comic and mine legend, Marcel Marceau.

Jesse Eisenberg gives a solid enough performance as the young and naive Marcel Marceau as his persona changes due his ongoing connection with the children, and a surprise performance by Ed Harris as General George S. Patton, Jr., however, it is Clemence Posey as the female leader of the group, Emma, that captives with a performance of total conviction and believability that holds a strong grip throughout, along with Matthias Schweighofer as the brutal Gestapo head Klaus Barbie, "The Butcher of Lyon," most notably in a scene on a train with children that will ensure that your nails will be shorter by scene's end.

Handsomely mounted, with superb period detail, production and costume design, any flaws aside, even if Marcel Marceau wasn't involved in these events, it is still a story well worth telling, but this little known story of war and history is best summed up as a yet another strong, effective and haunting reminder of the brutal Nazi regime in 20th Century History, innocence lost, and how the spirit and power of art can overcome.

Stars: ***** Review: The life of one of America's foremost founding fathers and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton.

Originally intended for cinema release by Disney in 2012 and brought forward to streaming as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, this filmed adaptation of the live Broadway production from the Richard Rodgers Theatre with the original Broadway cast, is a hugely entertaining and tremendously energetic production that blends its storytelling musical form through hip-hop, jazz, R&B and classic show tune styles, making the entire canvas as relevant today as it was over 200 years ago, and barely lets up for its 160 minute running time.

Star Lin-Manuel Miranda as Thomas Hamilton, also Writer, Co-Producer, Composer & Lyricist, Stage Production Director, leads a stellar cast that includes Chris Jackson as George Washington, Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson/Marquis de Lafayette, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and most notably Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) in a standout, roof raising performance as King George, all aided by a spectacular ensemble cast that brings it all to a dynamic and vivacious reality.

Captured for the cameras over three performances with a taut and respectful grip by the Emmy award winning director of 2016's "Grease Live," Thomas Kail, costume design, production design and editing all fall into place to reveal gloriously colourful, overwhelmingly engaging, exciting and indisputable heartfelt musical experience that transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way, and an irony that one of the best films of the year should come from the stage.

Rating: PG. Length: 91 Minutes.

Stars: ***** Verdict: Wonderfully macabre black comedy from Britain's legendary Ealing Studios of five eccentric criminals planning a robbery who find themselves living with a little old lady for cover as musicians, but when the gang set out to kill her things don't quite go as planned.

Rourke’s Reviews Villain ■ (R) (1971). 98 minutes. Now available on Blu-ray.

Beautifully restored, this somewhat underrated British crime drama may not be in the same league as the classic Get Carter (1971), but this brutal film has earned the cult following it has built up over the decades.

Richard Burton plays Vic Dakin, a notorious gangster who deals with any rivals (or problems within his organisation) with extreme violence, allowing him to rule the neighbourhood with an iron fist.

When he agrees to take part in a daring payroll robbery, where he has to team up with an outside crew, Vic's hold on power begins to waver, especially with Scotland Yard's Bob Matthews (Nigel Davenport) close on his tail.

Based on the antics of the infamous Kray Brothers (particularly Ronnie), writers Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement (Porridge, The Commitments, The Bank Job), and director Michael Tuchner (Fear Is The Key), infuse the material with streetwise grit, graphic violence, and a dark sense of humour.

Burton is terrific as the flamboyant Dakin, and is well supported by Davenport, Ian McShane, Donald Sinden, and Joss Ackland.

Time To Hunt ■ (MA). 134 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

After attracting major attention on the festival circuit in 2011 with his debut feature, Bleak Night, it has been a very long wait to see what director Yoon Sung-hyun's next film would be.

Thankfully the wait is finally over with Time To Hunt, a dark, dour action/thriller that effectively shows characters trying to survive in a collapsing society, while also delivering some superb set-pieces.

Set in the not-too-distant future, we are introduced to Ki-hoon (Choi Woo-shik, who played the son in the Oscar-winning Parasite) and Jang-ho (Ahn Jae-hong), childhood friends who are barely keeping their heads above water in a polluted country where the gap between rich and poor has never been wider.

South Korea has been suffering a major financial crisis, causing their currency to crash, thousands of businesses to fold, and leaving millions of people unemployed, with a growing number forced into homelessness.

The two greet another longtime friend, Jun-Seok (Lee Je-hoon), who is being released after serving three years in prison for a robbery gone wrong, and during celebratory

drinks, accompanied by Sang-soo (Park Jeong-min), he suggests they steal from the gambling house where Sang-soo works.

Hesitant at first, the other three are eventually convinced by Junseok's scheme, but of course things don't go completely to plan.

Using the age-old 'heist-gonewrong' premise, writer/director Yoon adds a number of layers to the scenario, incorporating various political and social commentaries to the crime mix, all seen through the eyes of these four young men who have experienced this corrupt, violent world for most of their lives.

Some elements have suddenly become relevant to how COVID19 has crippled global and local economies, the growing prevalence of government surveillance and access to private data (Taiwan doesn't seem like a random choice of destination either), while it's also fascinating that this brutal environment is run wholly by men, with women almost completely absent from the landscape (apart from Ki-hoon's mother, women are only seen in the background as either essential workers or gambling molls).

The long break certainly hasn't dimmed Yoon's ambitions, and even though the world he creates could have been a whole movie in itself, his focus is on the four protagonists, and this attention to the human factor is another aspect of why this is a cut above the usual slick concoction of big-screen mayhem.

The entire cast are terrific, and all make the most of the time devoted to their characters' development, but stealing the film Park Hae-soo, who is simply mesmerising as Han, the killer hired to take out the amateur robbers.

Yoon doesn't skimp when it does come to action and suspense, and his execution of these sequences is first-rate, with highlights including confrontations in a hospital and underground garage.

Though some have compared his meticulous stylings here to Michael Mann (Heat), I would make comparisons to Kim Jeewoon (A Bittersweet Life).

Adding immeasurably to the atmosphere is the cinematography by Lim Won-geun, and it is incredible that this is his first film (just check out Jun-seok's encounter in a bar).

Though the plotting does require the audience to occasionally suspend disbelief, Time To Hunt is a heady mix of social commentary and tense, violent action, and after that long hiatus, Yoon cements his standing as a genuinely talented film-maker.

I just hope we don't have to wait another nine years to see what he does next.

RATING - ***½

No Mountaingrass ■ The annual Mountaingrass Festival held in Beechworth has been cancelled for 2020.

Like so many other big music events, the COVID 19 crisis has claimed another victim. “While we are disappointed with having to cancel this year our primary concern is for the safety of everyone attending the festival and everyone involved in putting it on,” says their media release. Mountaingrass is the Australasian Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association and a not-for-profit organisation.

Angullong 2018 Fossil Hill Sangiovese ($28): Sangiovese is one of Italy's most popular varieties.

We have a number of types (clones) of sangiovese vines in the vineyard that are maturing well, having been planted close to 20 years ago. This red is a mediumbodied wine with lifted and vibrant aromas of violets, blueberries and dried herbs. The elegant flavours of blueberry, sour cherry and spice are complemented by savoury herbal complexity and soft balanced tannins. This is a wine to enjoy with traditional Italian fare, including ragu, pizza or antipasti.

WINE OF THE WEEK Angullong 2018 Fossil Hill Tempranillo ($28): This red was fermented in open fermenters followed by maturation in new (20 per cent) and used oak puncheons for 12 months.

While tempranillo is still often described as an emerging variety here it is the actually the tenth most crushed Australian red variety and is my pick of the new Angullong reds. Treat it as you would a cabernet sauvignon and you won't go far wrong.
