Residents in these local areas are being cautioned by Premier Daniel Andrews to stay at home. Locals are being refused entry to caravan parks and tourism venues elsewhere in the state.

The Victorian Government aunched a targeted blitz across 10 priority suburbs with a team of 800 testers to zero-in on community transmission with a fleet of mobile vans.

Residents of these suburbs will receive free testing – with or without symptoms.

On the advice of the Chief Health Officer, priority suburbs include Keilor Downs, Broadmeadows, Maidstone, Albanvale, Sunshine West, Hallam, Brunswick West, Fawkner, Reservoir and Pakenham, with Keilor Downs and Broadmeadows identified as the top two and focus of testing over the coming days.

The total cases from a North Melbourne family outbreak, with all of them also being close contacts of known cases, is 15.

A Coburg family outbreak, with a known close contact returning a positive test., brings the total number of cases linked to this outbreak to 15.

A case has also been notified in a healthcare worker linked to the Orygen Youth Health facility in Footscray. It is believed the worker completed shifts while infectious.

The Victorian Government has announced a tightening of the rules and has reduced the number of visitors you can have in your home to five. Outside of the home, people can now gather in groups of up to 10 only.

Council Briefs Conflicts of interest

■ Cr John Kavanagh declared a conflict of interest in a Moreland Council report relating to a dsubmission to the Non-Government Schools Permanent Planning Provision Changes. Cr Kavanagh is a full-time teacher at a non-government school in Moreland.

■ Cr Jess Dorney declared a conflict of interest due to a perceived conflicting personal interest in a report about 6 Florence St, Brunswick.

Maribyrnong power

■ Residents in the City of Maribyrnong now have access to safe, quality and affordable solar and battery installations through the Solar Savers program.

The Solar Savers program offers an affordable way for local residents to reduce their energy bills and future proof against increasing energy costs, while reducing their climate impact at the same time, with free energy assessments and options for low-interest loans for some residents.

The Solar Savers program is led by the Eastern Alliance for Greenhouse Action and the Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action and is supported by Maribyrnong City Council and nine other local Councils.

$3 mil. package

■ Hobsons Bay Council intends to provide a further package aggregating $3 million to assist with COVID-19 recovery projects, last week’s meeting was told.

“This includes a third Community Support Package estimated at over $3 million, which provides support for businesses and economic recovery ($1.965 million) and community recovery ($943,000),” said a report to Councillors.

“The third package continues to provide interest free rate deferrals for any resident or business suffering financial hardship as a result of COVID-19, in-line with the recently reviewed Hardship Policy and provides relief to those most impacted by COVID-19,” the report said.

10 objections

■ Moreland Council received 10 objections to a proposal to amend a planning permit to remove the requirement for three car parking spaces, being a reduction of car parking to zero at a property at 6 Florence St, Brunswick.

The objections has key issues being: ■ Reduction of car parking to zero ■ The amendment seeks to overturn the previous decision of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ■ Works undertaken not in compliance with the Planning Permit.

The permit relates to construction of a sixstorey building containing two office/retail premises and 20 dwellings.

A vote to refuse the permit was carried 64. For: Crs Bolton, Carli Hannan, Davidson, Kavanagh, Tapinos, Yildiz. Against: Crs Abboud, Irfani, Martin, Riley.

Laneway naming

■ The Moonee Valley Place Naming Special Committee unanimously moved that a second round of community consultation take place on the proposed naming of the BuckleyHutcheson Right of Way, Moonee Ponds, with a choice of two names: ■ Gibbins Lane (that recording the most votes from the first consultation); and ■ Gurnmil Lane/Way (meaning snake)

Dawson St plan

■ There were 18 objections to plans for demolition of existing buildings and development of a nine storey building at 10 Dawson St, Brusnwick.

Moreland Councillors were told of plans for a rooftop gardencontaining an office, shop and 57 dwellings and a reduction of the standard car parking requirement.

Crs Riley and Kavanagh were successful in proposing a motion for a permit, with more than four dozen conditions.

Airport West rubbish dumping ■ Moonee Valley Council is ramping up patrols of parks and reserves after a spike in reports of dumped rubbish across the municipality.

Council’s Cleansing team was called to two reports of discarded building materials at A.J Davis Reserve in Airport West.

The cases are part of an overall increase in the amount of dumped rubbish reports to Council during the COVID-19 State of Emergency.

The Council is enforcing its Activities and General Amenities Local Law 2018 and the Environment Protection Act 1970.

“When necessary we’ll also work with Victoria Police,” said a Council spokesman.

“But we still need your help, as residents, to keep our City clean and beautiful.

If you have hard rubbish that needs collecting, give our Council customer service a call on 9243 8888 or visit https:// hardwaste.mvcc.vic. gov.au/.

Eligible properties are offered two free hard rubbish collections per year and the Council will come and pick up items including mattresses, household appliances such as TVs or computers, white goods and bundled branches and pruning.

The Transfer Station was also reported to remaining open, but is no longer accepting cash payments

■ A petition with 97 signatures has been collected, requesting Moreland Council to install a pedestrian crossing outside IGA Express Moreland Road to the bus stop across the road next to Saks Salon.

“With the new apartment building and local customers using IGA Express the crossing would provide safety to cross the road,” Councillors were tolf.

Cr Sue Bolton moved, Cr Oscar Yildiz seconded that Council receive the petition, and refers it to the Director City Futures for consideration and response. The lead petitioner will be informed of any outcomes in relation to this matter

CBD death ■ Homicide Squad detectives charged a man following a fatal stabbing in Melbourne’s CBD on Monday last week.

The 22-year-old was arrested and wascharged with the murder of a 21-yearold Kurunjang man on Market St about 5am on June 22.

Dallas collision ■ Police are investigating a collision between two cars in Dallas on Wednesday evening last week (June 24) Fawkner Highway Patrol officers understand two vehicles were travelling east on Barry Rd when they collided around 5.15pm.

A four-year-old Broadmeadows boy from one vehicle was conveyed to hospital in a critical condition. A seven-year-old boy from the same vehicle was conveyed to hospital for observation. The driver of this vehicle, a 36-year-old Broadmeadows woman was uninjured.

Two four-year-old Craigieburn boys from the second vehicle were being treated for minor injuries. The 26-year-old female driver was uninjured and is assisting police with their enquiries.

Investigators have spoken with several people who were in the area at the time and witnessed the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.

Westgate Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are re-energising investigations into a sexual assault in Yarraville in 2016.

Police have been told a 26-year-old woman was at a party at a house in Yarraville when the incident occurred.

It’s believed approximately 15 people were present at the gathering and were celebrating a north-east Victorian seniors football clubs, grand final win. The party was not an official club sanctioned event.

The woman complained of feeling unwell after consuming a glass of orange juice and was escorted to a bedroom in the home.

The following morning, she woke with injuries consistent with a sexual assault and left the address immediately.

The sexual assault was reported to police in December 2018 and as part of the ongoing investigation, detectives are now hoping to speak to anyone that attended the party in September 2016.

Detectives believe those that were at the party will know who they are.

Moreland Council is endorising three possible names for inclusion in a poll to name the parkland at 33 Outlook Drive, Glenroy: ■ Bunjil Park; ■ Murnong Reserve; and ■ Dijirri Dijirri Park The Council acquired 33 Outlook Drive, Glenroy from VicTrack in June 2019, a 32,000 square metre site which forms part of the Moonee Ponds Creek linear parklands. The site provides green open space with shared trails connecting north and south between Kingsford Smith Ulm Reserve and Fran Str play space, and also across the Moonee Ponds Creek to Gowanbrae.

How long are the streetworks going to take in Fenwick St, North Carlton? The closed roads are costing big money for some local businesses.

By the look of some of the signs, the works might take as long as 12 months.

Six names have been suggested for three new roads within a subdivi sion at 105 Newlands Rd, Coburg North. They are McIlwraith, Cityview, Enterprise, Wangim (boomerang), Wirrigirri (messenger) and Gawan (echidna).

Moreland Council has to seek approval from the Wurundjeri Tribe Council to use indigenous names.

Hume Councillor reprimanded ■ Accusations of “misogynistic and inappropriate comments” in leaked text messages have led to Cr Naim Kurt being reprimanded by Hume Council.

Cr Kurt allegedly claimed in text messages that he "full-on bashed" Deputy Mayor Cr Karen Sherry at a meeting, tolerated homosexuals as long as they "don't flaunt it in front of my face" and disparaged relationships between Indians and white Australians.

Hume Council at its meeting held on June 9, reprimanded Cr Kurt and his unpaid leave of absence commenced immediately.

An email from The Local Paper to Cr Naim received an auto-response reply: “I am currently out of the office and away from council duties until August 10.”

A Council statement said: “Hume City Council does not tolerate inappropriate conduct. We do not tolerate threats of violence against women or any person, racial discrimination, or any other form of inappropriate conduct.

“Allegations of misconduct were reported to Council in May this year in relation to Cr Naim Kurt. Council takes all allegations of misconduct seriously and consequently due process had commenced in relation to the alleged misconduct.

“Our community rightly expects and deserves its elected Council representatives to uphold the highest standards of conduct and to act in a manner that supports and protects our community.

Rates submissions ■ Brimbank Council is setting a date for the Hearing of Submissions Committee meeting relating to the 2020-21 budget. The meeting is to be held at 6pm on Wednesday July 20, in the Council Chamber, Brimbank Community and Civic Centre, 301 Hampshire Rd, Sunshine and, if required, sets a further meeting to be held at 6pm on Thursday July 30, at Keilor Community Hib, 704B Old Calder Highway, Keilor.

Moonee Valley Gazette Renaming ideas

Brimbank ‘climate emergency’ ■ Brimbank Council has committed to zero net emissions in its operations by 2030 and to pursue zero net emissions for the whole municipality by 2040.

Council adopted the Brimbank Climate Emergency Plan 2020-2025 at its Council meeting on Tuesday last week (June 23).

It becoming one of the first Victorian councils to outline how it will implement its climate emergency declaration, and the first in Melbourne’s west.

Council’s Climate Emergency Plan commits to the following emission targets: ■ Zero net emissions for Council operations by 2030 ■ An interim aspirational target for Brimbank municipality of 70 per cent less net annual emissions by 2030 ■ Zero net emissions for Brimbank municipality by 2040 Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou, said a community petition resulted in Council declaring a climate emergency in June 2019.

“Our community has sent a strong message about the importance of local action on this global crisis and the need to act urgently to help restore a safe climate,” Cr Papafotiou said.

“Our consultations with the community have been overwhelming supportive of Council taking an active leadership role by declaring a climate emergency and there was general praise for the Plan.

“An immediate action in the Climate Emergency Plan is to develop an emission reduction pathway for the entire municipality to direct us towards the zero net 2040 target,” Cr Papafotiou said.

Mr McKenzie, a 3CR community radio presenter, is well known as a professional musician, and has been Grand Chaplain of Freemasons Victoria.

He took ill about 10 days ago, and has been in hospital with a heart ailment. Mr McKenzie is pastor at the House of Light Church in the western suburbs.

Hobsons Bay Mail Downer Oval bid

■ A petition was raised by Williamstown Football Club requesting that Hobsons Bay Council’s reconstruction of Downer Oval, Williamstown (also known as the Williamstown Cricket Ground) be brought forward to commence in October this year.

It was recommended to the June 23 meeting of Council that the Williamtown Cricket Club seek alternative arrangements for the 2020-21 summer season.

There are existing issues with the ground surface at Downer Oval.

■ Replying to the Council's letter of protest against the removal of tram cars from the Footscray car-barn, the Board, in reply, stated that at least six months would elapse before power would be available to run thelocal service;'and consequently it had been decided to iutilise the idle cars in the meantime.

They could earn a considerable amount of revenue, in addition to supplying a muchneeded public convenicnce. It was pointed out that interest had to be paid on the constructional cost of the cars. As soon as power was available, the trams would he put in operation, and the just claims of the district in regard to the cars would be fully respected.

Yarraville ‘Tartar’

■ A great deal of merriment was caused at the Footscray Court on Monday, when an elderly woman nam ed Susan E. Ballinger was charged with having used insulting words to Mrs. Corby on 11th June at Castlemaine street, Yarraville. It was not the first time Mrs. Ballinger, who is evidently a wellknown identity in the southern part of the city, has been charged with offences of this nature.

Her behaviour in court was decidedly unorthodox, and caused much amusement.

Mrs. Corby said that on the date in question she was carrying out her household duties, when the defendant called out to her and used the words complained of. The words were written on a piece of paper, and before she saw them the defendant exclaimed several times, "I didn't!" "I didn't!'

When at length the paper was handed to her she looked at the informant and said, "Oh! you bad woman! You wicked woman!"

Mrs. Ballinger denied having said anything of the kind. "If she swears that, she is swearing a lie. It is a word I never use."

Constable Rogers stated that in consequence of what he was told he visited the scene of trouble and saw the defendant with an axe in her hand knocking down a fence.

The defendant: It was not her fence.

The Chairman. That will do, Mrs. Ballinger. You must behave your self. Your conduct here this. morn ing has been quite, enough to show what you are capable of.

The defendant was remanded for seven days for medical treatment.

Unmitigated pests

Qantas job losses hit Sunbury, Tulla ■ Communities with airline workers in areas such as Sunbury, Tullamarine and Gladstone Park will be hardest hit by last Thursday’s announcement of 6000 job losses at QANTAS. The Australian airline says it will not resume substantial international airline operations until at least July 2021.

The job losses are a response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

QANTAS said around 100 of its aircraft would be grounded for up to 12 months, with some for longer.

“The airline will permanently retire its remaining six Boeing 747 aircraft six months ahead of schedule, and defer deliveries of new Airbus A321neo and Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

"Right now all airlines are in the middle of the biggest crisis our industry has ever faced," said Alan Joyce, QANTAS CEO. Mr Joyce said the crisis had hit QANTAS "very hard" and that "the impact will be felt for a long time".

■ Hobsons Bay Council is looking to implement a 2 per cent rate increase in iots 202021 budget.

“The proposed Annual Budget 2020-21 includes a 2 per cent rate increase, in line with the Victorian Government’s Fair Go Rates System, and is the most effective way in the current financial climate to offer an agile and responsive approach to direct support to those who need it,” said a Council spokesman.

“This represents an average general rate increase by slightly less than $1 per week across all property types in Hobsons Bay,” the statement said.

Brunswick tree

164 new jobs at Hume ■ Hume City Council will offer 164 jobs to locals that are currently out of work under a new Victorian Government initiative.

Mayor of Hume City, Cr Carly Moore, said the Government’s Working for Victoria fund will provide six-month employment opportunities to those who need it most.

“Many locals have been impacted by COVID-19 and now find themselves in financial hardship,” Cr Moore said.

“As we navigate our way through COVID19, it has never been more important to support our community to secure employment.

“By providing a quick return to work for locals here at Council, we can help them get back on their feet.

“We are pleased that we were successful in applying for the fund and are looking forward to welcoming our 164 new employees who will provide critical services across Hume City in response to COVID-19.”

The new jobs will focus on providing important services in the following areas: ■ community cleaning services ■ gardening ■ conservation and land management ■ assisting in digitising Council records ■ communications and community support ■ supervisory and asset management.

■ Moreland citizen Nic Dolby has questioned Moreland Council about an ironbark tree in Brunswick.

"The ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) tree on the corner of Dawson and Saxon Streets is both a landmark and a significant tree.

“I urge Council to include the clause that the tree will be protected and its health uncompromised. Will Council do this?" Mr Dolby asked.

Cr Mark Riley said “Council officers pointed out the value of this tree and its significance as there aren't too many large or older growth trees on the site or adjacent to it; “I am very hopeful the developer will be able to do a work around and not knock it over or have to trim it back too much; “Council is looking at other ways of putting bonds on trees in the public space for this purpose so that when they are damaged or removed we can at least get some value to reinvest in trees and maintaining them,” Mr Dolby said.

St Albans needs

■ Brimbank Council should write to Jaala Pulford, the Minister for Roads and Road Safety and the Transport Accident Commisrequesting an urgent assessment of pedestrian and road safety along Main Road East, St Albans, between St Albans Road and Stradbroke Drive and implementation of safety treatments to address identified issues, Brimbank Council was told last month.

QUESTION AT COUNCIL MEETING Moreland Council Director City Futures Kirsten Coster responded: “Council has identified a suite of improvements on two potential bike detour routes which Mr Englart has previously shared; “Council has also been working through getting ap-

provals with the relevant authorities particularly the Level Crossing Removal Authority; “The State Government has indicated that the $950,000 worth of work will not be funded, Council will now refer that expenditure to the budget process; “Council officers are also working on a detailed report to be presented at the July 2020 Council meeting, with a range of other methods to improve pedestrian cycling movement as well,” Ms Coster said.

■ Brimbank Council last week endorsed a Homelessness Implementation Plan to guide its response to homelessness in the municipality.

The Implementation Plan is aligned to Council’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response and Recovery Strategy, and is built on a series of recommendations arising from a project commissioned by Council.

The Implementation Plan represents a broad ‘statement of commitment’ from Council to support people experiencing homelessness in Brimbank.

It considers the role Council can play in advocating for long-term solutions that prevent homelessness, as well as contributing to a more integrated, flexible and coordinated response.

Brimbank Mayor, Cr Georgina Papafotiou, said the Study is critical in learning more about the issues facing many in our community who are sleeping rough or living in overcrowded dwellings.

“The harsh reality is that Brimbank has the highest rate of homelessness in Melbourne’s west. More needs to be done to help the estimated 1460 people experiencing homelessness in Brimbank (an increase of 30 per cent since 2011).

“This is placing considerable strain on already overstretched services, which has seen more than 5000 people seek specialist homelessness services in Brimbank in 201819 - the highest of any municipality in Victoria.

“The report also highlighted a lack of local data on rough sleeping, relatively high levels of overcrowding, and increased reliance on hotels and rooming houses due to a lack of locally-based emergency accommodation facilities.”

Local News $5 mil. funding for Moonee Ponds Ck

■ Moonee Valley Council is support a funding announcement of $5 million from the State Government to help transform a section of Moonee Ponds Creek, to improve the waterway biodiversity and create a more natural looking creek.

The money will be used to improve a stretch of the creek from Brosnan Crescent near the Strathmore North Primary School downstream to Lebanon Reserve.

In 2018, Council nominated revitalising the Moonee Ponds Creek in Strathmore as a top advocacy priority.

“Since then we’ve been working hard to see our dream of naturalising the Creek receive funding support and we’re proud to be part of the ‘Chain of Ponds Collaboration’, a group working to “transform the Moonee Ponds Creek into an iconic Melbourne waterway that provides high social and environmental benefits,” said a Council spokesperson.

This section of the creek was not always a concrete channel.

Before European settlement in 1835, Moonee Ponds Creek formed a ‘chain of ponds’ during drier months which swelled into a creek during heavy rains. It was, and still is of significant cultural importance to the local Aboriginal people.

As the area was developed, the Creek was realigned and changed into the drainage system we know today.

In the 1970s the Strathmore Progress Association successfully stopped the extent of concrete channel being constructed, and passionate community members still advocate for the area today through the ‘Friends of the Moonee Ponds Creek’ and the ‘Chain of Ponds Collaboration’.

“Naturalising a creek is no mean feat and the design will be dependent on testing and research, however, we hope it’ll lead to a better creek for the environment and the community,” said the Council spokesman.

“We’ll be working with our community including local Indigenous people on the transformation.”

Visiting the creek, Cr Samantha byrne, Mayor of Moonee Valley, said Council and the local community are behind this project and greatly appreciate the State support.

“During my time on Council improving the waterways has been a huge passion of mine,” Cr Byrne said.

“To see the project get to this point is really exciting, I know there’s plenty of work ahead of us but this is a big step in the right direction.”

Moonee Valley Council’s Strategic Planning and Environment Portfolio holder, Cr Nicole Marshall, said improving the health of the Creek had wide-ranging benefits.

“Not only is it good for the environment, improving this vital waterway and the surrounds creates more opportunities for our community to enjoy green open space,” Cr Marshall said.

“The funding, which is part of a $48.4 million investment in shovel-ready water projects under the Government’s new $2.7 billion Building Works program, will not only improve a precious part of Moonee Valley’s backyard, it will also create jobs so people can get back to work following the pandemic,” the spokesman said.

Hobsons Bay says ‘no thanks, Brimbank’ ■ Hobsons Bay City Council will lodge an objection to a planning permit application, which is before Brimbank City Council.

The squabble is over a chemical storage warehouse at 6/600 Geelong Rd, Brooklyn, just inside the Brimbank municipality.

Just 400 metres away are homes on the south side of Geelong Rd, located inside the Hobsons Bay boundary.

The applicant has been lodged by Derek Clark, of FBT Transwest, which gives its address on permit application paperwork as 490 Blackshaws Rd, Altona North.

Owner of the land is Brooklyn Logistics Park Pty Ltd, which has a registered address at offices in Bligh St, Sydney. ““The application contravenes the awardwinning Brooklyn Evolution Strategy, which slates the area as a key employment node for Melbourne’s west over the next 20 years,” says Sandra Wilson, Hobsons Bay Deputy Mayor.

“The strategy also earmarks Brooklyn as an area that will embrace, clean and green investment and development, as well as a great contributor to local employment, economy, image and placemaking.

“To say that this application concerns us greatly is an understatement.

“We need to send a strong message, on behalf of a very vocal and fed-up Brooklyn, that undergoes so much impost from the nearby industrial precinct.

“For this to happen on ours and Brimbank’s watch is really disappointing as it says that we are not willing to take into account the people of Brooklyn and how something like this affects them,” Cr Wilson said.

Cr Tony Briffa, of Cherry Lake Ward in Hobsons Bay, said: “The Brooklyn community has been disadvantaged and subjected to poor amenity and environment issues, including dust and odour issues for decades.

“It is deeply concerning and frustrating that the Brooklyn community havs yet again been put in an unacceptable risk situation from industry so close to their homes.

“This application is outrageous. Brimbank City Council, the state government, local Members of Parliament and referral agencies like the EPA must put a stop to this and must take the health and amenity concerns of Brooklyn residents seriously.

“There is so much to be proud of in Brooklyn as the area grows and develops and unfortunately when we are faced with these sorts of applications – retrospectively, no less – it really goes to the heart of what we as a Council are trying to achieve under the Hobsons Bay 2030 Community Vision – planning decisions that are visionary, vibrant, accountable.”

The application, which has been lodged retrospectively following the applicant already operating the storage facility for corrosives and combustibles, has been met with strong opposition from Councillors and the Brooklyn community.

The site is located in a large industrial precinct to the north of Geelong Rd with residential Brooklyn located to its south.

Hobsons Bay Council’s main objection is the close proximity of the storage facility to residential properties. The site is located only 420m from Brooklyn houses and 123m from the Fed-

“I want to put on record my deep appreciation to the outgoing principal, Paul Mulroyan, for his advocacy, along with the school council.

“Can I also say to see the Western Autistic School and Rosehill Secondary College taking shape is so important in our local community. These are wonderful schools.

“I am particularly proud of the Western Autistic School in Garnet St in Niddrie.

“More than $7 million is going towards this redevelopment that will provide students with special needs the care and support they need.

Review: Coriolanus ■ Not often performed, the plot of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus is convoluted.

The general, Caius Marcius (Tom Hiddleston) is contemptuous of the plebeians of Rome for rioting.

He finds them undeserving of the grain they want as the populace hadn’t fought to save Rome in the recent battles with the Tarquin kings.

The impending threat posed by the Volscian army then propels Marcius to glory as he defeats their leader, Aufidius (Hadley Fraser) and is greeted as Coriolanus – or conqueror.

Capitalising on his new found reputation Coriolanus enters politics only to find he cannot live up to the expectations of the people or political opponents who want to bring him down.

Sent into exile and humiliated, he defects to the Volscian army and leads them against Rome.

A change of heart occurs when his mother, Volumina (Deborah Findlay), appeals to his honour which will be forever tarnished by his betrayal. Coriolanus concedes and is slain by Aufidius.

Shakespeare’s reasons for tackling this topic may coincide with popular uprisings in England against the merging of small landholdings into larger estates by landlords consolidating their holdings.

Whilst audiences might be able to identify with the theme of disaffection, the character of Coriolanus is less sympathetic.

‘The strength of the language and the skill of the actors hold the moment’ He has no monologues that help establish his train of thought or change of heart. Coriolanus is not a conventional tragic hero nor are the vagaries of the general public easy to fathom.

For all that, this is a dynamic production. The minimalist set (Lucy Osborne) and the sparse direction (Josie Rourke) sees characters stepping into their multiple roles from seats set against a common wall.

The strength of the language and the skill of the actors hold the moment.

The back wall serves as a screen and a prop for graffiti.

A simple square painted on the floor becomes the prime focal area into which characters enter and depart the action.

At two hours and 40 minutes in length, this YouTube streaming of the National Theatre’s production first performed in 2014 is not for the faint hearted.

It is, however, more than just a record of one of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays, it is a testament to the theatrical arts and the performance skills by actors that make theatre come alive.

● Coady Green ■ The sound of live performances has been missing in Melbourne for more than three months now, but for concert pianist Coady Green, that's about to change.

Coady is performing three socially distanced classical piano concerts at Brunswick's Tempo Rubato later this week.

The concerts are on Friday (July 3_ at 8pm and Saturday (July 4) at 6 pm and 8 pm.

With only an audience of 20 people permitted, the concerts of Liszt, Kouvaras and Rubinstein are heavily booked, such is the desire for live professional classical music.

But if you miss out on scoring a ticket to the live concerts, Coady's pianist fingers are very busy at the moment, preparing to record his first set of CDs for British label Toccata Classics.

He will be recording the complete piano etudes of the Romantic Russian composers, Anthon Rubinstein.

This is a particular exciting project, as they have never been recorded in their entirety before and are notoriously difficult.

And that's not all for this busy musician he is also recording a CD of Australian music for saxophone and piano, with his classical saxophone playing partner Justin Kenealy.

Together they are Duo Eclettico, and this recording will be on the Australian Tall Poppies label.

Coady is adamant that he loves sharing his music with a live audience, because he says that while each of the audience come from different background with their own personal stories, all are united for a moment by the experience of the music.

So what has this passionate pianist missed most about not having live performances?

"The communication between performer and audience is what I have missed about live performance, and what thrills me to go back to performing live attain," he said.

Away from the concert state, Coady is a pianist and lecture in classical performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne.

Victorian Arts Bendigo Gallery Bessie Davidson & Sally Smart - Teo artists and the Parisian avant-garde Bessie Davisdon was one of a cohort of female Australian artists who.at the turn of the 19th century, sought to expand their lives and artistic careers by travelling to the renowned cultural centres of Europe, most notably Paris and London.

Many artists returned to Australia bringing their matured artistic style to an Australian audience.

Davidson was one of the few who choose to stay in Europe, firmly establishing herself within the vibrant artistic milieu of Paris's Montparnasse.

Over the course of her career Davidson received many accolades and awards including being made a chevalier of the Legion of Honour - the highest award conferred by the French Government.

Whilst Davidson's work has largely been overlooked in Australia, stories of Bessie Davidson's life as an artist living in Paris were a frequent part of conversation in artist Sally Smart's childhood home in rural South Australia.

Bessie was Sally's great aunt - her legacy empowered this renowned Australian artist to follow her own artistic ambitions.

This exhibition brings together more than 50 works that highlight Davidson's 'modern French impressionist' style of painting - with life filled domestic interiors, landscapes and portraits of women, in addition, the gallery has invited Sally Smart to create a new body of work responding to and developing upon the cultural legacy of Davidson as a pioneering female South Australian artist - firmly placing the work of this ground-breaking artist back into the story of Australian art history.

Sally Smart, who recently retraced Davidson's life in Paris, has worked with leading dancers, Deane Butterworth and Jo Lloyd, to create a new cross-disciplinary video installation that represents Davidson's relationship with lifelong friend and rumoured lover, Margaret Preston.

His newly commissioned work "embodies the timeless psychological tensions for these women, grappling with the avant-garde in art and life, at a traumatic period in human history with war, isolation, gender and modernity", and will be shown alongside a survey of key works from Smart's Australian and international collection.

Step into an imaginary world of hidden tunnels, lava pits and underwater caves without ever leaving home in Mountain Goat Mountain.

In this interactive journey, families will be guided with audio through a series of playful activities before being carried along through an immersive soundscape. Created entirely in isolation, Mountain Goat Mountain is designed for children and grown-ups to share together.

Last year, A Not So Traditional Story by Nathan Maynard took to the Fairfax stage in a story with a little bit of truth and a little bit of make believe.

This archival recording combines Terrapin entertaining and engaging children with the voice of a new generation of Tasmanian Aboriginal performing artists. The work will be available for 10 days from 12pm Monday (July 6) Kids can also participate in multiple workshops created by The Channel: Home Studio which allows them to get creative in their very own digital home studio.

Dear Australia ■ Arts Centre Melbourne alongside Playwriting Australia (PWA) and 25 arts organisations from across the country will broadcast Dear Australia; a collation of creative works from 50 Australian playwrights from July 2-5 on its digital hub, Together With You. Interim Executive Chair of Playwriting Australia, David Berthold, said that this was a project that “not only elevates the voice of playwrights, but also demonstrates the huge diversity of voices this nation enjoys.”

Police consider leaving

■ Nearly three-fourths of Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said in a poll that they are considering leaving the force amid a police reform bill recently passed by the D.C. Council.

The proposal would require law enforcement body camera footage to be released to the public more quickly following a police-related shooting and would restrict when officers can use lethal force.

It also would prohibit the department from purchasing military-style equipment from the federal government.

Local lawmakers stopped an attempt by one council member at large who proposed to limit the size of the force and cap it at 3500 from its current size of 3863.

However, several hundred on the force revealed to the D.C. Police Union, which represents 3600 Washington officers, detectives, and sergeants, that they are looking to leave anyway.

According to the survey of 600 local law enforcement members, of the 71 per cent considering leaving, 25 per centmay retire earlier than planned, 35 per centare seeking jobs at other law enforcement agencies, and 39 per cent are considering leaving law enforcement altogether.

Additionally, 96 per centof those members polled said they believe crime will increase, and 88 per centsaid officer safety will plunge.

Defunding Police ■ Over half of Democrats support the movement to defund the police, according to a new poll published last week.

Just 34 per cent of Americans support defunding the police, according to a ABC News poll.

This includes 55 per cent of Democrats, but just 9 per cen t of Republicans.

Support for the movement also cuts across racial lines, with 57 per cent of African Americans supporting the movement to defund the police, compared to 42 per cent of Hispanics, and 26 per cent of Whites. The poll has a margin of error of roughly 4.2 per cent. Calls to defund the police have escalated in recent weeks after four Minnesota police officers were charged in connection with George Floyd's death. A "veto-proof" majority of the Minneapolis City Council now supports defunding the city's police department in the wake of Floyd's death.

Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender said during a CNN appearance last week that the desire to call the police during an emergency situation comes from a place of privilege.

Some prominent Democratic politicians, including Reps. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York have signaled support for the movement to defund the police, while presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has said he does not support the idea.

A majority of Americans disagree with the call to defund the police and the proposed reallocation of funding, a national poll taken amid demonstrations for George Floyd found.

Almost two-thirds of Americans are against defunding law enforcement while 34 per centagree with the movement, according to an ABC News poll released last week. When asked about reducing the police budget to put resources toward other health and social programs, 60 per cent of Americans opposed the idea while 39 per cent supported it.

■ Remember those corny comedy films featuring Ma and Pa Kettle? Marjorie Main asMa Kettle was a fine comic actress with a gravelly voice and Percy Kilbride was just perfect as the mild mannered Pa Kettle.

The characters were simple hillbillies who lived on a run down farm with 15children. As a child I thought they were hilarious.

Mary Tomlinson was born in Indiana in 1890. When she became a vaudeville performer Mary took on the ‘stage name’ of Marjorie Main to avoid embarrassing her father who was a minister.

She debuted on Broadway in 1916. Marjorie married in 1921 but her husband passed away in 1935.

Her first film was A House Divided in 1931.

Marjorie became type-cast in high class dowager roles and made six films with Wallace Beery in the 1940s.

She became a contracted player with MGM studios. Some of her films at MGM included Meet Me In St Louis, The Harvey Girls and Summer Stock.

In 1947 she was cast opposite Percy Kilbride as Ma Kettle in the film The Egg And I. The public loved Ma and Pa Kettle and as a result in 1949 Universal Studios produced their first film titled Ma and Pa Kettle.

Marjorie asked to use her own clothes for the role of Ma and loved working with Percy.

Percy Kilbride was born in San Francisco in 1888 and had worked as a Broadway actor before making his first film in 1933.

Stars: **½ Review: John Shaft Jr, is no private detective like his family bloodline before him, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend's untimely death, he needs an education only his dad and legendary grand-dad can provide.

A direct sequel to 2000's "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson, which was a follow on from the Oscar winning "Shaft" (1971), "Shaft's Big Score" (1972) and "Shaft in Africa" (1973) starring Richard Roundtree as the super cool private detective, John Shaft, this time around is a formulaic by-the-book addition to the series that has nothing new to offer, but nonetheless, it is a comforting return that radiates a fuzzy nostalgic feel for those fans of the series, and a more than passable introduction to the legendary character for those who weren't around went Shaft first hit screens back in 1971, or 2000 for that matter.

Samuel L. Jackson is right at home as the sharp, quick witted and wise-cracking nephew, John Shaft, and it's a joy to watch him spar off against the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, returning in the iconic role, however, it is the young Jessie T. Usher as John Shaft, Jr, that remains the weakest link of the three protagonists, leaving the feeling that it could have been something far greater resonating throughout, as jokes and humour more of a misfire more often than not, ultimately making it the lamest in the series to date driven by a shallow screenplay and inept direction.

"Shaft" is far from a loss, as there are moments to enjoy, primarily Jackson and Roundtree as they navigate their way through the usual punch-ups, gun play and pyrotechnics, and even though the heavyhanded comedic route should have been pulled into line, and driven along with more depth and substance, this is journey down memory lane that strangely enough, when all was said and done, had me hoping that I would like to have another visit from them again, only better next time hopefully.

FILM: THE DEBT COLLECTOR: Genre: Crime/Drama/Thriller.

Cast: Billy Connolly, Ken Stott, Francesca Annis.

Year: 1999.

Rating: MA15+ Length: 109 Minutes.

Stars: **** Review: This is legendary comedian Billy Connolly as you've never seen him before, a gritty and hard-hitting crime drama of a notoriously brutal 'Debt Collector,' now straight and successful, and a detective obsessed on retribution for the horrendous crimes he inflicted on helpless people decades earlier in 1970's Scotland.

Billy Connolly gives a dark and gripping dramatic performance as the now successful artist with the vicious villainous past, and is aided with tremendous effect by veteran Ken Stott (Shallow Grave) as the avenging detective on a campaign to ensure that the violent crimes are not forgotten or forgiven.

Reflective of such outstanding British crime thrillers as Danny Boyle's 'Shallow Grave' (1994), Graham Greene's 'Brighton Rock' (1948), Mike Hodges 'Get Carter' (1971) with Michael Caine and John Mackenzie's 'The Long Good Friday' (1980), this is a compelling thriller that never lets go, an experience with the force of a sledgehammer that hits you right between the eyes.

Rating: M. Length: 99 Minutes.

Stars: **** Verdict: A young boy with an extraordinary talent with the guitar dreams of being a famous Blues guitarist, so he persuades legendary Blues musician Willie Brown to help him, but on the way deep into Mississippi, doesn't know about Willie's deal with the devil decades before at the crossroads, and that the Devil is now wants to collect.

Outstanding film from legendary director Walter Hill inspired by the legend of blues musician Robert Johnson and the classic myth that he sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads to achieve success.

Strong direction by Walter Hill from a superbly intelligent screenplay and top notch performances, most notably veteran Joe Seneca as Willie Brown, bring one of the great the legends of the blues to life with a searing edge and haunting intensity.

Wonderfully atmospheric and topped off by an electrifying soundtrack

by Ry Cooder, and an edge-of-your seat climatic guitar dual, this is a story of the deep south that brilliantly reflects why they call it the blues. Footnote: The Coen Brothers paid homage to this legendary story in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000).

Rourke’s Reviews Birthday ■ (M). 120 minutes. Available on Blu-ray and DVD. Touching on a subject that continues to deeply affect many members of the South Korean community, especially those who directly suffered from it, this exceptionally well-acted, genuinely moving drama sees the arrival of an exciting talent, writer/director Lee Jongeon, who has actually been working behind the scenes for almost two decades.

On April 16, 2014, a seemingly routine ferry trip turned into an absolute nightmare.

The Sewol, due to piloting error, turned too sharply and began to slowly tip over, but instead of getting the passengers to make their way to the upper deck, the crew told them to remain in their cabins, reassuring them that everything was okay.

By the time that it clearly became evident everything wasn't okay, the ferry had tipped to the point where the passengers couldn't escape, with the lower levels now largely filled with water.

On top of that, the coast guard response was far too slow, and government orders to keep outside experts, helpers and reporters at bay, hindered things even more.

By the time the disaster reached its conclusion, 304 passengers had drowned, around 250 of them students from Danwon High School.

Of the 172 people who survived, most were rescued by fishing boats who turned up 40 minutes before the coast guard.

The government then concentrated their efforts on covering up the numerous, incompetent mistakes made, enraging the public even more.

This, along with other incidents, lead to the downfall of President Park Geun-hye in 2017.

Set three years after the tragedy, Birthday centres on one particular family, who lost their teenage son, Su-ho (played by Yoon Chan-young in flashbacks). Jungil (Sol Kyung-gu) is the husband and father who returns to South Korea after several years abroad, wanting to re-enter the lives of his wife Soon-nam (Jeon Do-yeon) and young daughter Ye-sol (Kim Bo-min), who was too young back then to now recognise her father.

Soon-nam is totally broken from the death of Su-ho, and has never forgiven Jung-il for not being there during her darkest hour, and immediately asks for a divorce.

Jung-il is totally unprepared for the stifling, destroyed world Soonnam lives in (she even intermittently picks on or ignores Ye-sol), and his awkward attempts to console are frequently wrongheaded, but he does manage to slowly make

a connection with his daughter.

When volunteers from a Sewol support group show up asking if the couple want to commemorate their son's upcoming birthday, as a way of saying goodbye, Jung-il agrees, but Soon-nam refuses, feeling the whole exercise undermines her significant loss. The first three-quarters of Birthday are beautifully lowkey, as we see a family dealing with the sorrowful death of a loved one, and how it affects each person differently. Lee carefully concentrates on what each character says and does (or doesn't), and how they interact with people who are either trying to help, or have suffered like them, and even quietly (but powerfully) incorporates real locations and memorials that families of the disaster visit. This makes the finale all-the-more emotionally overwhelming, as we see damaged people finally externalise their pain, openly acknowledging how much Su-ho's death has devastated them.

This heart-wrenching catharsis eloquently follows the grimly measured drama that has proceeded it.

The acting is simply brilliant. Jeon (The Harmonium In My Memory, The Shameless, Ashfall, Beasts Clawing At Straws), who won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her searing performance in the magnificent 2007 film Secret Sunshine, totally immerses herself in what is a very demanding role, making Soon-nam's crippling grief wholly believable, but also allows us to understand her cold, at-times anti-social behaviour (a scene where Soon-nam breaks down is truly uncomfortable to watch). Sol (Peppermint Candy, Oasis, Idol) also impresses as Jung-il, while young Kim is perfect as Ye-sol. Lee Jong-eon has worked for a number of years for renowned filmmaker Lee Chang-dong (whose most recent film was the critically acclaimed Burning), as a script supervisor on Secret Sunshine, and as an assistant director on Poetry (2010); she also worked as an assistant director on Ounie Lecomte's outstanding autobiographical feature, A Brand New Life (2009), which was produced by her mentor. Lee, who actually volunteered for an association who provided a place where bereaved families could gather, treats the material with intelligence and respect, and never allows the film to fall into melodrama or cheap manipulation.

Birthday is certainly emotionally draining and demanding, but is an authentically human experience that deserves to be seen. There have been a number of documentaries made on the Sewol disaster, including The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol (2014), After The Sewol (2017), Intention (2018), and In The Absence (2018), which was nominated at this year's Oscars.

Rescue package ■ The live music sector is one of the winners in the Federal Government's new $250 million Arts and Entertainment Package announced last Thursday.

Live music gets $75 million of capital funding to help production and event businesses put on new festivals, concerts, tours and events as social distancing restrictions ease as reported by The Music Network.

What exactly is a GSM blend?

■ John Rozentals tells his readers about GSM blends.

So what exactly is a GSM blend?

Well, it's a dry red blended from three varieties - grenache, shiraz and mourvedre (aka mataro).

Though not always, apparently, do the varieties appear in that order of magnitude. Labelling a wine as MSG just doesn't have the same appeal, if you get my drift.

Each of the component varieties has a clear function.

Grenache adds its perfumed juiciness, and shiraz its trademark mid-palate richness and dark-berry flavours.

Mourvedre normally does come last in the varietal mix and has the stiffness to make sure it's a red we're drinking.

The blend originated, I believe, in France's Rhone Valley, and remains popular there.

It is catching on in Australia, too, especially where there are old plantings of grenache and mourvedre. That is, mainly in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.
