MONITOR APPOINTED TO DAREBIN COUNCIL

Local Government Minister Shaun Leane said the monitor will address concerns about governance and councillor conduct at Darebin.

The monitor will work to prevent issues from escalating and support councillors to perform their duties successfully.

The monitor for Darebin City Council will also guide the council to appoint a Chief Executive Officer, with the departure of Sue Wilkinson from the top job.

The municipal monitor will be appointed in coming weeks and will provide regular reports to the Minister on the council’s progress and recommend any further actions.

The State Government is supporting and improving council culture throughout the state, last year conducting a wide-ranging study into what influences council culture as part of the Local Government Culture Project.

■ THE State Government has announced the appointment of a Monitor for Darebin City Council. The Monitor will support good governance and guide the Council to best serve their communities.

Mr Leane said: “We’re serious about improving culture in local councils. We want to encourage positive practices and stop negative behaviour.

“Municipal monitors have proven to be effective at guiding councils to make improvements in governance that help them better serve their communities.

“We expect councillors to maintain high standards and practice good governance – which is what people rightfully expect from their elected representatives.”

Darebin City CEO Sue Wilkinson has left her position to go to the pro-Greens City of Yarra.

Under her watch, planning permit applicants were banned from using The Local Paper for their advertising.

Over two years, the Council refused to answer any questions from The Local Paper. The Council has tried to obstruct The Local Paper, as has the nearby Whittlesea Council, by denying any paid advertising.

■ DAREBIN Mayor Cr Lina Messina has failed to satisfactorily answer governance questions put by this newspaper.

Cr Messina was asked 14 questions

by The Local Paper, after potential inconsistencies were discovered in the Biannual Return that Councillors and executives are obliged by law to answer.

Kristi High, the Executive Manager - Corporate Affairs Manager of nearby Whittlesea City Council, left her position abruptly last year after inconsistencies were found in her return.

The questions asked of the Mayor on Friday (Jan. 28) by The Local Paper were: “You are the Mayor and Councillor of the City of Darebin. The Local Government Act and other legislation, and various codes of conduct, require that holders of such positions are obliged to demonstrate the highest levels of candour, transparency and accountability.

“In the interests of fair and balanced reporting, and to provide you with the opportunity to state your case, we ask a number of questions about matters that are of public interest.

■ Would you please confirm that the trade mark and the business name of 'Feminae' is registered to you at the address of Unit 1, 129 Darebin Boulevard, Reservoir? Would you please confirm that this is your current residential address? If it is not your current address, would you please list your current residential address?

■ Would you please confirm that your Trade Mark registration with IPAustralia for 'Feminae' is under opposition from the Barbaro IP Trust?

Would you please advise if you conduct or have conducted business under the 'Feminae' name?

■ Would you confirm that the Barbaro interests filed their trade mark application on August 21, 2020? Would you please confirm that you filed your trade mark applications on March 10 and July 26, 2021.

Governance worries

The appointment of the Monitor comes after months of instability following Mayor Cr Lina Messina’s deal with the pro-Greens Councillors to secure control of the Council.

The 5-4 majority is held by Councillors Hannan, McCathy, Messina, Newton and Rennie.

The four minority Councillors - Dimitriadis, Greco, Laurence and Williams - had run an ongoing campaign to throw a spotlight on irregular governance at the Council.

Those four Councillors were denied membership of a committee established to review the work of the Council CEO, yet an independent citizen has membership and voting rights.

Late last year, Cr Messina did a deal with the pro-Greens Councillors that she would retain her Mayoralty in return for her vote on vital matters.

The minority Councillors say that citizens in the northern part of the municipality - north of Bell St - have been neglected by the Council.

● Cr Lina Messina, Darebin Mayor ■ Australian Securities and Investments Commission records appear to indicate that you hold a business name registration for 'Feminae'.

Would you please explain why there appears to be no reference to your 'Feminae' business interest on your latest Darebin Council 'Biannual Personal Interest Return'?

■ In your candidate's notes in 2021 for Football Victoria, you describe yourself as the "Founder, Director [and] CEO of Feminae". You appear to have deliberately chosen the word 'Director', which has implications under Corporations law. However, you appear not to have declared this 'Director' position in your Biannual return. Please explain.

■ You have chosen to describe 'Feminae' on its Facebook page as a "charity organization".

There appears to be no registration of 'Feminae' or yourself as a charity organization with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission. Is 'Feminae a charity organization, as you publish? Is it a business, given that you have

registered a business name, and made a trade mark application in your own name? Please explain.

■ In your latest Biannual return (September 2021), you state you have 'nil' interest or beneficial interest in land. Is this still the case?

■ ASIC records show that you own 100 $1 paidup shares in each of two companies: Messina Ink Pty Ltd (January 30, 2020) and Ms Messina Pty Ltd (March 3, 2021). Your Biannual return offered a 'nil' answer in your September 2021 declaration about "shares you own or have a beneficial interest in". Please explain this apparent inconsistency.

■ In your Biannual return, you made a 'nil' declaration about "companies which you solely or jointly with family members hold a controlling interest", you answered 'Nil'. ■ In your Biannual return, you state that you are working in the aged care and disability sector as a 'Pandemic Officer'. You list your employment as being with COAS IT. Is this still the case?

■ Given the apparent inconsistencies between the answers you have furnished in your Biannual return, and the high levels of behaviour required of Mayors and Councillors, do you believe that you should continue in the role as Mayor and/or Councillor with Darebin City Council?

Sex assault in North

■ Melbourne Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Team detectives are investigating a sexual assault which occurred in Richmond last month.

Investigators have been told a 15-year-old boy was at a playground in a park on Highett St when he was approached by an unknown male around 7.30pm on March 27.

The man struck up a conversation with the boy and sexually assaulted him, then left the scene in an unknown direction.

Detectives have released an image of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The man is perceived to be Asian in appearance and aged between 25 and 35-years-old.

He was wearing dark-rimmed glasses, a dark-coloured t-shirt, light-coloured cargo shorts, dark-coloured sneakers and a distinctive silver coloured watch.

Melbourne West Police caught a speeding P-plate driver on the Eastern Freeway early Sunday morning.

Officers clocked a Honda Civic ravelling at an alleged 174kmh in a 100kmh zone inbound on the freeway in Kew just after midnight. Police intercepted the vehicle and spoke to the driver, an 18-year-old woman.

Eltham MLA Vicki Ward said that country drivers who complain that dangerous potholes are hazards on the rural road network are living in “imagined fantasies”, according to Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish, who said the Government was “naive” about country road.

■ Plans are progressing to create an accessible walkway and cycle path at Gipps St in innereast Melbourne, with Parks Victoria requesting tenders for construction of this major upgrade on the Main Yarra Trail.

The Main Yarra Trail followsthe Yarra River (Birrarung) from the north eastern suburbs to the city.

Currently, the trail meets steep steps at Gipps St in Abbotsford, presenting an obstacle to cyclists and walkers and a barrier to anyone with limited mobility.

The project will replace the steps with an approximately 150 metre-long, curling elevated walkway and bicycle path which will follow a gentle gradient, enabling all users to enjoy a continuous journey along the trail. The project will also involve extensive revegetation along the river embankment.

Bundoora drug arrest ■ Three people have been arrested as part of a Taskforce Icarus investigation into the importation of methylamphetamine into Melbourne.

A 24-year-old Glen Waverley man, 36-yearold Doncaster man and a 20-year-old Bundoora man were all arrested by police in Doncaster East on Monday night (Apr. 4).

The arrests followed the attempted importation of approximately 40kg of methyl-amphetamine, which was seized and detected offshore in the United States.

The consignment was collected and transported to a residential property in Doncaster East, when Victoria Police, Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force members made the arrests.

Police searched three vehicles the men were travelling in and seized a number of items including over 3kg of methylamphetamine, drug paraphernalia including scales, a firearm, knuckle dusters, tools, passports, radio equipment and mobile phones.

The trio were interviewed and subsequently charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs.

They faced Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (Apr. 5) and were remanded in cus-

■ Detectives from Darebin Crime Investigation Unit have charged a man following an alleged hit-run in Kingsbury on March 31.

Police arrested a 31-year-old man at a Heildelberg West address on April 5.

He has since been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury and remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on June 26.

The charges come after a 27-year-old Kingsbury woman, who was participating in a charity fun run, was struck by an allegedly stolen Toyota on Chenies St in Kingsbury about 4.30pm.

The victim remains in hospital with serious injuries. Detectives would still like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has dashcam footage.

Stage 2 of the Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre may require up to $21.6 million of Banyule Council funds, this week’s municipal meeting was told. The current budget allocation over three financial years is $12.7 million. Council will be advocating for funding opportunities from external bodies throughout the design development process and refer any shortfall to future budget processes. The Council has a commitment to net zero through an all-electric, 5 Star Green Star accredited facility outcome. A Community Engagement plan has been developed and broad consultation on the plan will take place throughout April and May.

Local Briefs Kingsbury hit-run

■ Darebin Council will hold a special meeting at 5.30pm on Thursday (Apr. 14) at the Preston chambers.

Agenda items include the composition of the CEO Employment Matters Committee, and the proposed recruitment process for a new Chief Executive Officer.

The meeting is to be livestreamed.

Donnybrook name

■ City of Whittlesea residents are being into assist in the search for a name for Council’s future community centre, to be located in the Olivine estate in Donnybrook.

The multi-purpose centre will include a kindergarten, maternal and child health services, a pop-up library, and flexible spaces for community programs.

Residents can get involved by considering what they love most about Donnybrook and the heritage of the area. The Council will shortlist a selection of the submitted names for the community to vote on at a later date.

City of Whittlesea Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said that naming the community centre is a great opportunity to connect with the area’s history and understand the community’s aspirations for Donnybrook.

The community centre in Donnybrook is currently in the design stage. Construction of the centre is expected to start late next year, with the facility up-and-running in 2025.

■ A petition with 37 signatures was due to be presented to this week’s meeting of Banyule Council (Mon., Apr. 11).

All signatories are from Wattle Ave Montmorency, and the petition outlines objections to the development proposal at 12 Wattle Ave. The petitioners argue that any further developments in Wattle Ave should not be supported bythe Council.

The signatories say they do not want Wattle Avenue to be over developed and end up like GraemeAvenue.

‘Keep the bastards honest’ ■ Labor leader Anthony Albanese is not likely to be voted in at next month’s Federal Election ... but Prime Minister Scott Morrison is likely to be voted out.

The Local Paper through its localised eitions covering 38 local government areas around Melbourne, will maintain an energetic coverage of the campaign, particularly in marginal seats.

Don Chipp, leader of the Australian Democrats back in the 1980s, coined the phrase that his job was to “keep the bastards honest”.

Our ‘public interest news gathering’ role is much the same.

Over the years, we have seen a consistent pattern arise.

Authorities - and the people at the top of them - try to put obstacles in front of independent media to prevent the investigative blowtorch becoming too powerful.

In Melbourne, The Local Paper has faced a number of examples.

At Whittlesea City Council, its team headed by Chief Executive Officer Craig Lloyd - withdrew all paid advertisingat exactly the time we exposed its governance shortcomings.

In a childish move, Whittlesea Council refuses to answer any emails from us, won’t answer any questions, and its Administrators live in a pretend world where they must think they are beyond scrutiny by local press.

At Darebin Council, it has been much the same. Its team, under then-CEO Sue Wilkinson refused to

Changes at Fitzroy

■ Yarra Council is upgrading the facilities at Brunswick Street Oval in Fitzroy North, The Council has had to make some changes to its plan to ensure the proposed upgrades to the historic grandstand meet heritage requirements.

The proposed changes include: ■ A new sporting pavilion with club rooms and amenities.

■ Two additional tennis courts.

■ Upgrades to the tennis pavilion, including new community rooms and facilities.

■ New public toilets.

■ A landscaped garden with a bocce court.

■ Improved pedestrian safety and access.

There will be minimal changes to the exterior of the heritage-listed grandstand.

The Council is now asking for community feedback on the changes to the original concept plan. It is also seeking ideas for artwork at the site.

Whittlesea Probus

■ The the Combined Probus Club of Whittlesea April meeting saw Ivan Peterson as guest speaker, telling of his time in Papua New Guinea in the 1960s. He presented reformatted 35mm Kodak slides.

When Ivan moved to PNG to take up a teaching role,it was made up of two separate territories administered by the Australian Government’s Department of Territories.

Papua was an Australian territory similar in status to the ACT, the NT, and several other islands. New Guinea was a United Nations Protectorate administered by Australia.

Ivan, a major league baseballer with the Collingwood Magpies prior to his PNG days, is proud of his contribution as playing coach of a team of local technical college students.

The Probus morning ended with community singing of a nursery rhyme in Pidgin English.

The Probus Club meets at Whittlesea Bowling Club on the first Monday of the month and visitors are welcome.

Darebin Council even took the step of advising planning permit applicants that they could not advertise in The Local Paper.

It’s a peculiar move because The Local Paper is the only local weekly community newspaper in that area.

We think that is shameful behaviour, and we have said so.

In this week’s Local Paper, readers will see the launch of our campaign against Prime Minister Scott Morrison, and his superintenance of the Australian Communications and Media Authority.

In 2020, The Local Paper entered a grant agreement to perform $74,000 of work in its regional edition.

The Local Paper has done all the work, and sought reimbursement for the expenses incurred.

All receipts have been provided. Audit requirements have been met. Despite COVID, we have deducted adjustments because it was the right thing to do.

Rather than pay its bills, the Australian Communications and Media Authority won’t pay its outstanding commitments to us, and indeed has demanded a $11,970.97 rebate.

Good luck with that, Mr Morrison.

His Government’s approach lacks honesty. We won’t be paying a cent.

Nor will we be giving him our vote. Long Shots senses that in a few short weeks, Scottie from Marketing will learn plenty about Jobseeker.

“In considering this additional information, officers still propose a 20 per cent discount be applied to all cricket clubs in Banyule, which would equate to a total of $18,846.00 for the 2021-22 season for all cricket clubs. Shute said that in the eighties she and other crime readers were swept away by the explosion in women’s crime writing driven by Paretsky, Sue Grafton, and Val McDermid and, in Australia by Kerry Greenwood and her now world-famous Miss Fisher Murder Mystery series.

“Sisters in Crime’s origins were rather accidental. During a visit to North America, I decided to interview five women crime writers and produced a program for RN’s Coming Out Show, which went to air on Good Friday, 1991.

Local Theatre The Best of Akmal

■ The Athenaeum Theatre is the Melbourne International Comedy Festival venue for Akmal’s show entitled The Best of Akmal.

At the outset he blames his management for the title of the show and apologises if the audience expectations are not fulfilled. As a seasoned stand-up comedian, Akmal has many stories to tell. He also likes to involve individual audience members and improvise by asking them personal questions.

The topics covered were numerous and seemed to waft from one to another without any clear segue or clarity. This says a lot about Akmal’s laid back persona. He lamented how COVID has affected the entertainment industry and how comedians really don’t have any other skills to survive in the future unless the industry is revived fully.

Being an immigrant who was born in Egypt, he views the world as a phenomenal place to travel and see the diversity of sights and people. Akmal talked about family, friends and loving his three dogs. Religious stories of his travels in Israel and how scary he finds the Vatican are a highlight.

He has a lot of advice to impart but all of it is flippant and light-hearted. His views on ‘how to spot a predator’ and how sport is the true Australian religion, enhances his perception that everyone is far too serious. Stories about his worst audiences were hilarious.

His improvisation and asking the audience to ask him questions didn’t really work on the night. People took a while to respond to this unexpected banter. His final comment was that his favourite comedian is Scott Morrison.

Akmal commented at the end of his show, that the show was a little scrappy and this reviewer would agree with that sentiment.

Trash with a Porpoise

■ A new sketch comedy show for children and families being presented at La Mama Courthouse during school holidays from April 20 -24 is full of puppetry, clowning, song and of course, plenty of Trash.

New, original puppet characters, including Crabs, Sea Slugs, Penguins, Sea Horses and a Puffer Fish, join the Porpoise and starring character ‘Merf’ to share stories, songs and jokes.

Trash with a Porpoise has the format of a sketch comedy show with short, punchy, hilarious sketches, whilst exploring the themes of marine waste, and how we can address it.

The show includes participatory elements, wherein the audience will be called upon to assist, including call and response and even inviting some audience members on stage.

We follow the trials of this young Italian immigrant, now living in Australia and trying to fit in. The brilliantly written script includes stories, songs, Shakespearean style repartee and a myriad of distinctive characters.

This thought-provoking show centres on the theme of racial discrimination and how to cope with people who insist they are ‘telling it like it is’, whether this is beneficial or not to the character in question.

This is a story based on true events, as Fabio takes the audience through eight distinct segments of Mario’s life. From the young innocent Mario to the polite, respectful adult Mario, we want him to win, to do the things he loves and cherishes.

Fabio questions whether the Australia we now live in is really accepting of those not born here. We have a sense of the every-day struggle for families where English is not their first language. He makes us understand the deep sense of loss of nationality and identity that goes along with that.

Fabio is able to interchange characters with faultless precision, both vocally and physically.

Timing is everything in this show and Fabio is a master of comic timing. Movement direction by Zya Kane augments the portrayal of characters.

The precision of the lighting and sound operator, Brad Vaughan, enhances the excellence of this show. Music by Munro Melano enriches the story even further. Congratulations to all involved in this production.

It was a pleasure to witness such an accomplished actor.

■ Monash University commissioned this premiere to be presented at Monash’s several Performing Arts Centres. It is not your high-flying circus, far from it, but one of great mental concentration, strength of body with suppleness by eight lives that explore the gift of weight that lies at the heart of acrobatics and mostly without leaving the stage floor.

The ensemble of Holly-Rose Boyer, Rhiannon Cave Walker, Keaton HentoffKillian, Bridie Hooper, Gerramy Marsden, Paul O'Keeffe, Lachlan Sukroo and Billie WilsonCoffey all seamlessly worked through a density of entanglements, multiple arm lifts, towers of three and far more under the direction of the creator, Yaron Lifchitz.

While unable to identify by name (no photos provided) who in particular withstood the weight of all the lives often, others all exhibited great sense of timing in their vertical lifts and horizontal swings during many moments of personal encounter and often sharp moments of close-up intimacy.

A bare stage with some striking sequences of lighting by designer Paul Jackson, allowing the lives to work at all angles, across, the perimeter and centre and, as the Creative Director said, could resemble living in an apartment, maybe a courtyard or even a sports arena.

Added to the lighting was the original musical score created by Melbourne composer Jethro Woodward. At times melodic, at times syncopated giving emphasis to the offbeats while displacing standard rhythm. It was quite fitting.

● Fabio Motto Monash continues to give contemporary work a place in the theatrical performance scene and this was something that the “lives” would have well met their expectations.

We Take Back Our Mother Tongues

■ We Take Back Our Mother Tongues will be presented from May 6 -7 at Arts House, North Melbourne Town Hall at 7.30pm.

Created by FAMILI, a multidisciplinary storytelling project, a team of Oceanic artists will represent their complex experiences of culture and identity in diaspora.

Some 15 artists will come together whose bloodlines hail from Pasifika and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, that weave together to create some of the most essential queer, transgender and Bla(c)k voices across Australia.

We Take Back Our Mother Tongues features a line-up of live music acts, DJ sets, video projections and sculptural installations by Mossy 333.

Drawing on hip-hop, new wave R&B, Oceanic musicality and more, We Take Back Our Mother Tongues is driven by the currents of queer and LGBTQIA+ experience. The electronic music stems from traditional percussive and melodic instruments like conch shells, log drums, bamboo shakers, split canes and flutes.

Mossy 333’s installation blends the elemental themes of water, flora and flames, where sculptures transform between rocks, plants and coral – they represent the ideas of morphing bodies, duality and gender fluidity.

An intimate cabaret experience directed

by Miranda Middleton (Voldemort and the Teenage Hogwarts: AMusical Parody, Great and Powerful Ozzie), Not Today takes audiences on a rollercoaster ride through the ups and downs of being a young queer performer working at a children's hospital during a pandemic, and the climate anxiety that permeates it all.

Not Today was inspired by Ally’s song Quiet Australian, a climate change anthem originally written in response to the 2019 bushfires, and performed for the Bushfire Benefit Concert that Miranda produced at the Giant Dwarf Theatre, with thousands of people engaging with the work across social media. It led to Ally’s debut single and a music video that brought together over 20 artists from across Sydney.

As theatres began to reopen in 2020, Ally and Miranda united again with a new mission to weave Ally’s music into a one-woman cabaret, and Not Today began to take shape.

Producer Robbi James from Rogue Projects said, “The Rogues are thrilled to be working with Miranda and Ally to bring this wonderful work to Melbourne after such a great reception to the show in Sydney. Legends of the Skies

■ LOTS (Legends of the Skies) Theatre is flying in a different direction on April 24 with their one-off ANZAC Eve tribute performance to be presented at 7.30pm in the intimate Casey Hangar at the Moorabbin Air Museum (previously known as the Australian National Aviation Museum) at Moorabbin Airport.

■ Melbourne-based comedian and former combat soldier Jarryd Goundrey, 35, makes his MICF debut in Incoming on April 11, playing until April 23 at Bard's Apothecary in Melbourne.

As part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and March to Art: Voice, Incoming is a sharp look through the lens of a military man, trying to find his place in the world after fighting in Australia’s armed forces.

From combat soldier, to chef to one of Australia’s fastest rising comedy stars, Jarryd Goundrey has lived “three lifetimes in one” so far.

Reminiscing on his time in the armed forces, Incoming is Jarryd’s lighthearted and hard-hitting exploration of his journey from growing up in sleepy WesternAustralia, to entering into and out of the armed forces.

Including stories on how he joined the army by mistake, his pet monkey in East Timor and how going from the stress of the army to the stress of cheffing seemed like a natural progression.

According to Jarryd, having spent the first half of his adult life as an Infantry soldier in the Army, gave him the opportunity to naturally gravitate to comedy as an avenue of expression and creativity.

“The seven years I spent in the Army in Townsville, as well as a deployment in East Timor, was an ideal foray and baptism of fire into the world of comedy. I found myself doing comedy shows artificially during my time in the Army, which then allowed me to seamlessly continue after I left.

“The veteran community has been very supportive with my shows – which are raw and authentic, and I find my time up on-stage exhilarating.

Comedy is unique in the sense that the audience and you become one entity and I feed on their enthusiasm and reaction.”

Heroes of the Fourth Turning

■ The worn cladding and faded curtain of the weatherboard house that is the set (Louise McCarthy) for Will Arbery’s Heroes of the Fourth Turning, form the flag of the United States.

We are in the heartland of conservative America where four former students of a fundamentalist Catholic College reunite.

Each is an archetype of traditionalist belief.

Kevin’s (Darcy Kent) desire for a girlfriend conflicts with him thinking of being a priest and Emily’s (Mollie Mooney) autoimmune disease allows her to sympathise with those holding more liberal views. They each want to celebrate their former mentor’s success.

Gina (Margaret Mills) has been appointed college president.

Each and all are flawed in their own way and Arbery has them espousing their own fundamentalist views allowing the audience to make up their own minds as to the veracity of the character’s opinions.

Arbery has skewed the theatrical balance in this regard. The debates about cancel culture, race and abortion are more polemical than dramatic but we witness the destructive nature of such extremism on their personalities.

The cast revel in highlighting these extremes of conduct; Teresa is bitter and misdirected, Justin has retreated to backwoods militarism, Emily struggles with trying to achieve unity while Kevin’s drunkenness identifies him as the most human in his self recriminating fallibility.

Gina’s rationalism leads her to the conclusion that the college has ultimately failed them all. After seven years away, they have returned to where they were educated and haven’t progressed.

The backlighting of the front door (Efterpi Soropos) reveals a crucifix and Justin’s obsession with cleaning blood from the doorstep are both biblical.

Arbery also insinuates that the house is haunted with the periodic screaming that is attributed to a failed generator. These dramatic touches and the personal tensions of unfulfilled promise - Kevin’s unrequited love for Teresa, Gina excoriating her charges for false thinking, Emily’s frustration with her mother, Justin coming to terms with his past – might have enabled Arbery to achieve greater dramatic tension.

As it is, I wonder how Australian audiences will relate to the profundity of America’s obsession with such conservative idealism.

Red Stitch’s production provides us with an intriguing insight into the core values of what could almost be described as isolated, inward looking, sect like thinking or, in other words, the heart of America.

Observations Elizabeth: A Portrait

● Queen Elizabeth II. ■ For anyone under 65, the only reigning English monarch we have known is the current occupant of the throne, Queen Elizabeth the second.

It is this fact that gives automatic fascination to a new movie-length documentary about Her Maj, titled Elizabeth:A Portrait in Parts, that gently explores many facets of the longest reigning monarch in the world.

To be still doing the same job at 95 that she started as a young woman in her 20s is remarkable enough, but she has managed to do it with grace, dedication and a strong work ethic.

And also kept herself free of personal scandal, even if her family hasn’t.

What is refreshing about the late director Roger Michell’s creation is that it is not a sycophantic film with a gushing narrator.

In fact, there is no narrator – the narrative is carried by pithy slides with short titles as the film ducks back and forth between different decades. But these signposts enable us to keep up and not get lost.

What I liked particularly was the slight tongue-in-cheek humour in the approach in making the film.

The music is eclectic, and often is a comment on what we are seeing, such as shots of the opulence of Buckingham Palace accompanied by the pop song ‘Our House’.

It is these touches that keeps the documentary from getting too serious, and it also means that director Michell can show us many examples of the woman behind the crown, with a sense of humour her official role often doesn’t allow her to show.

Would a Republican like this documentary? Probably not, but anyone who finds the Queen a person of interest, and anyone interested in social history will enjoy this thoughtful film, which is dedicated to director Roger Michell as it was one of his last creations before his recent death. It’s an absorbing portrait of the woman who has been on a throne for much of our lives.

Elizabeth: A Portrait in Parts opens on the royal lady’s actual birthday, April 21, at Palace Cinemas and Cinema Nova.

What’s On Home and Other Mysteries

■ Two hours of tireless energy buzzes by when Monash University Student Theatre (MUST) takes over the stage with Home and other mysteries embodying the lives of young Australians on the cusp of change. This is a collaboration of three MUST writers and four emerging composers under Georgia Kate Bell's direction.

We are offered three stories in one when a bunch of university students try to make sense of life and to establish where their individual homes lie. Their pervading family scripts and parental shackles of expectation are being shaken.

The group gather together when Eli (Spencer Tripodi) throws his first grown-up uni party.

Eli is holding on to his familial cocoon of order and domesticity which is upset when his new-found friends throw him into foreign territories of chaos, drug-taking, yoga, spiritualism and much more.

Ange (Natasha Nosiara) experiences selfdoubt about her relationship with a boy she really likes. Her crutch is to present as being constantly busy when in reality she is failing in her grades and every aspect of her life.

Will she take up the lifeline offered by her good friend, the non-threatening, quirky Wally?

An initial confused intimate relationship between Allie (Lauren Caltabiano) and Mel (Madeleine Burgess) is worked through as they lovingly unravel differences made more edgy by the suspected presence of aliens.

This performance is permeated by an infectious sense of youthful exuberance and fun. The choreography is impressively executed and the music is pertinent to mood changes: the beat succeeds in picking up the threads of uncertainty and optimism of the generation. Despite COVID Lock down production limitations, I applaud this young company for achieving an obvious sense of ensemble.

Judith and Denise

■ Was there no orifice unmentioned, no part of the anatomy taboo, no confession too shameful? In short – no. Judith Lucy and Denise Scott, like dowagers theatrically ensconced on the Playhouse stage, revealed all - metaphorically speaking.

Having acquainted themselves with the audience, especially those in the front row, they proceeded to beguile and even taunt while encroaching the boundaries of propriety with references to breasts, vaginas and the clitoris.

This ribald anatomical examination was all prompted, of course, by their recent experiences of lockdown with which the Melbourne audience had no difficulty in identifying.

In fact, this was the cruellest aspect of their show, the reminders of what we have lived through.

Damn you ladies for revisiting our recent past. The remedy, of course, for all the isolation and zombie Zoom mentality that we suffered was laughter.

From the perspective of Judith and Denise, their engagement with the audience was the lifeblood of comedy – of their identity – and was something many performers were deprived of under lockdown.

Think of the five kilometre limits and ‘significant other’ restrictions. All of this made for the stuff of comedy – from the worst moments come the best jokes.

Judith, naturally, took this to extremes.

Her frenetic energy and mind takes things to the edge of comedic absurdity.

Denise, the more demure, still packed a wallop with the tale of her partner’s colonoscopy. And both appealed to their schoolgirl past with a stint of liturgical dance while, all the while, teasing individuals in the audience making their presentation immediate and relevant.

Ladies, Melbourne thanks you. I thank you for an entertaining night out – but did we have to go through lockdown to appreciate the humour? Your show could justify any catastrophe.

Lano and Woodley

■ One cannot help but feel as if an existential crisis is occurring in Lano and Woodley’s Moby Dick at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Colin Lane valiantly attempts to retell Melville’s epic saga (in one hour) only to be constantly interrupted by Frank Woodley. The Abbott and Costello type shtick is funny enough.

The border between a theatrical retelling of the story and a present day intrusion is clear. But such is Lano and Woodley’s comic affinity that they tease each other as an alternate idea comes to mind.

Is this scripted or not? And when technical difficulties with the sound system occur, this is incorporated into the show – or was it part of the show in the first place?

The artifice behind the staging is also made clear; the Ryobi blower lifting the plastic is a great touch. It was made plain for all to see.

And the ripping down of the sails on which the journey of the Pequod was projected is the culmination of this joyous act of creation which can be generated, scripted, reshaped and improvised upon with impunity.

The limerick linguistic prestidigitation was a delight and the squid game completely anachronistic. Had Melville realised what could have been done with his work, he might have condensed it to make it an easier subject upon which to riff. Ahab may have come to his senses and thought better of poking a whale.

As it was, the audience went away feeling better about themselves given the comic exuberance of the performance. And perhaps comedy is all we need to appreciate our existence and be grateful for who and what we are.

Quicker Than The Eye

■ Moving on from his 2021 Magic Festival show Moments in Time, Josh Staley returns to the Melbourne International Comedy Festival with Quicker than the Eye. Up close magic card tricks and sleight of hand are Staley’s power force, but he slots quite comfortably into the Comedy Festival with his quip humour and daggy gags. While there is an endearing bumbling to his character, there is stealth and precision in his card trickery.

A card master, he shuffles and manipulates, magically making them disappear and reappear with mind-boggling ease that is nothing short of perplexing. And that’s not all. Then there are the inexplicable mind games. He selects random people from the audience to think about random thoughts - could be a name, a number, a card and somehow Staley knows exactly what it is they are thinking – or does he? Could every other person in the audience be planted? Ok very unlikely but how else can his ‘magic’ be explained?

There is no faulting Staley’s performance and the thrill of his show, however there are a few things he might consider that could take his performance to the next level. While it seems inherent in his nature to talk quickly, as a performer he needs to slow down a tad and focus on diction.

Additionally, while the Carlton Brewery provided an excellent venue, it was difficult to see what was going on from a few seats back. If you are spruiking sleight of hand then it is quite important that the audience can see what’s going on.

Those minor issues aside – if you think you can’t be hoodwinked or bedazzled by a clever card trick, then Quicker Than the Eye is a must see – because even a hard-core skeptic will be thrilled and astounded by Staley’s magical performance.

■ From April 21-May 15, Melbourne audiences can enjoy the 2022 Moro Spanish Film Festival presented by Palace at various venues. The program reveals a line-up of Spanish language cinema from Spain and Latin America, featuring famous faces, including Penélope Cruz, Antonio Banderas, Oscar Martínez, Paco León and Blanca Portillo along with new talent.

The program of 34 films consists of 21 features from Spain, 10 from across Latin America including Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay and the Dominican Republic and another three from Australia and the USA, and features a wide range of genres from periodset drama, documentary, realist drama, to satire and comedy.

The Corner Shop

■ The word for the night was ticket- brought to you by a member of the audience.

Following were various scenes created around the use of the word ticket. Plane tickets, ticket stubs, tickets to keep surveillance on the world anything this group of five could think of on the spot that had some connection with this theme.

Impro Melbourne Company led by Rik Brown have put together a fabulous cabaret style ‘skeleton’ entitled Kit Kat: An improvised Cabaret.

Perfect for the late night, small venue, comedy festival vibe at the Town Hall.

Each night the word is different, therefore each performance is different.

The cast is slick, consisting of experienced, talented comedic actors. Rik Brown the director of this show is the obvious leader, steering the various scenes ensuring the show flows, keeping it moving with the theme always in the foreground.

The improvised songs are accompanied by the talented musician Panfred Reed.

All the cast members from Impro Melbourne Company, are as interchangeable as the nightly themes.

Rik Brown was an obvious standout, a talented singer, actor, comedian, writer. Some of the cast were better singers than others, all held their own well as actors, though there were some moments when they were vying for speaking time- easy to stumble when improvising.

For those not used to this style of theatre I am sure you will be in awe of the skills all the cast show in making up rhyme and stories on the spot.

For those of you who are familiar with impro this is a great masterclass, and with a different theme each performance, this is a show that can be seen more than once.

A very entertaining , funny fifty minutes.

■ ABC TV Hard Quiz die-hards will relish the chance to meet Tom Gleeson performing in the Melbourne Comedy Festival when the Gold Logie winner hosts his Hard Quiz Live, at Melbourne Town Hall. Part of a national tour and the first time performance in Tom's home town Melbourne.

Tom is known for his unmerciful, sarcastic taunts directed at quiz contestants. He is hungry for self-revealing snippets of personal information and thirsty for contestants' unwitting slips of the tongue. No-one is spared.

On opening night, contestants chosen from the live audience had their knowledge tested on stage from selected topics. Apart from a few organisational tweaks to suit the venue, the formula for this quiz event was familiar, enabling the winner to give full voice to the customary finale catch-phrase, 'Thanks for playing hard'.

Tom sought culturally diverse contestants who proved to be a good-natured mix. His guess as to who would be winner proved wrong when university politics student, Aileen, was trumped on her political leaders topic and was the first to be eliminated.

We learned that Tom's own Comedy Festival stand-up debut had actually been in the Melbourne Town Hall, although it was in a small space in the basement. In recognition of his debut and in keeping with his typical sardonic humour, we were invited to participate in an act of vengeful wickedness.

Our quiz master humorously dealt with the occasional audible shout out of answers from the audience and the show rolled on.

He also demonstrated a few surprise talents and related personal anecdotes to round off an entertaining night of theatre.

After an exhaustive search to find the perfect corner shop for the Ferrones to inhabit, filming began last week on Back In Time For The Corner Shop (5x60mins).

In the latest installment of this much-loved living-history series, the Ferrones will experience close to 150 years of running a familyowned corner shop.

■ Months of meticulous planning for all the tourists from down under. Hotels in West Hollywood have come together to plan for more than 8300 Australians who arrive at Los Angeles Airport every week.

Thousands of travelling Australians using their travel credits have made April very strong in ticket sales. Additional flight capacity is being added after sales shrunk down to 4000 seats per month, a year ago.

I am very happy to report that QANTAS is returning to Los Angeles Airport with the A380 aircraft giving extra seat capacity.

Historically, when Australians travel to West Hollywood they tend to stay for more than five days every trip. It’s a wonderful village with everything close by. Restaurants, boutiques, tourist attractions and friendly people.

Your plastic gut

■ How much plastic is sitting in your gut? If you think the answer is zero, think again. A recent review suggests people consume about five grams of plastic particles per week, the equivalent of the weight of a credit card.

Nano plastics are any plastics less than 0.001 millimeters in size. Microplastics, on the other hand, are 0.001 to 5 millimeters and on some occasions still visible to the naked eye.

Most microplastic and nanoplastics find their way to the human food chain from packaging waste.

Plastic particles can enter the body through seafood, sea salt, or drinking water. One study referenced in the review found people who drank the recommended 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day from plastic bottles takes in 90,000 plastic particles per year from this way alone.

People who opt for tap water reduce their ingested amount to about 40,000 plastic particles.

Federal tax payers down

■ More than half of American households paid no federal income tax last year due to COVID-relief funds, tax credits and stimulus, according to a new report.

The non-partisan Tax Policy Centre estimates that 57 per cent of US households paid no federal income taxes for 2021, up substantially from the 44 per centbefore the pandemic.

Howard Gleckman, senior fellow at the Tax Policy Centre, said COVID-related job losses, a decline in incomes, stimulus checks and tax credits were largely responsible for the increase.

The expanded child tax credit was a large factor. It substantially reduced “the income tax liability of more than a hundred million households and temporarily turned many from payers of small amounts of federal income tax to non-payers,” Gleckman wrote.

With many of the tax programs ending, Gleckman forecasts the number of non-payers will decline to 42 per cent in 2022 and 38 per cent by 2029. “We predict it will go back down and remain fairly low relative to historical standards,” Gleckman said.

NY population declines

■ New York County, which is the borough of Manhattan, and San Francisco County, which is the City of San Francisco, led the nation with the highest percentages of population decline from April 1, 2020, to July 1, 2021, according to data published by the Census Bureau.

New York County had a population of 1,694,251 as of April 1, 2020. By July 1, 2021, it had dropped to 1,576,876 a decline of 6.9 per cent.

San Francisco County had a population of 873,965 as of April 1, 2020. By July 1, 2021, it had dropped to 815,201 a decline of 6.7 per cent.

■ The finance minister ofAfghanistan before the Taliban took over the country is now driving an Uberin Washington to support his family.

Khalid Payenda oversaw a $6 billion budget in his homeland but fled as the country teetered on the verge of collapse.

Now the father of four has joined the gig economy and tells The Washington Post, “I feel incredibly grateful for it. It means I don’t have to be desperate.”

Payenda is also co-teaching a course at Georgetown University and occasionally speaking at think-tanks as he copes with a sense of rootlessness and failure.

“Right now, I don’t have any place,” he said. “I don’t belong here, and I don’t belong there. It’s a very empty feeling.”

■ A Manhattan Spanish teacher yanked from the classroom after investigators found she sucked on a man’s nipple during a Zoom class, returned to the same school this month – stunning students who had witnessed the lewd display.

“It’s weird. It’s wrong,” a junior told The Post. “It was so embarrassing for her to come back.” The city Department of Education removed teacher Amanda K. Fletcher from Columbia Secondary School for Math, Science, and Engineering amid the COVID19 shutdown in October 2020 after investigators found she “engaged in an inappropriate sex act” while remotely instructing her class.

During the lesson, “Professor Fletcher”, as students called her, sat at a kitchen table eating spaghetti with a shirtless man standing behind her.

She appeared to “suckle” on the man’s nipple while rocking back and forth, then turned to the camera, smiled and wiggled her shoulders, the Special Commissioner of Investigation for city schools reported.

■ Medical marijuana fails to improve symptoms of pain, anxiety, and depression while increasing the risk that patients will develop an addiction to cannabis, a new study warns.

Researchers from Massachusetts General Hospital add that up to one in five users may develop cannabis use disorder (CUD).

The findings come from a review of medical marijuana card holders in the United States. A growing number of states now allow the use and sale of medical marijuana to help alleviate the symptoms of conditions including epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, and the side-effects from chemotherapy.

“There have been many claims about the benefits of medical marijuana for treating pain, insomnia, anxiety and depression, without sound scientific evidence to support them,” Professor Jodi Gilman said in a media release.

Curtains for your heart

■ Closing your curtains won’t just give you more privacy at night, a new study finds it can also protect your heart while you sleep.

Researchers from North Western University found that even a small amount of light exposure while sleeping increases the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Researchers say heart rates rise and the body can’t rest properly when there’s light in a bedroom.

Their findings add that exposure to even moderate ambient lighting during night time sleep, compared to sleeping in a dimly lit room, harms cardiovascular function and increases insulin resistance the following morning.

“The results from this study demonstrate that just a single night of exposure to moderate room lighting during sleep can impair glucose and cardiovascular regulation, which are risk factors for heart disease, diabetes and metabolic syndrome,” says senior study author Dr Phyllis Zee in a university release.

“It’s important for people to avoid or minimise the amount of light exposure during sleep.”

Stars: **** Review: Oscar winning semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy-drama that centres on a young boy's childhood with his working class family amidst the turmoil of Belfast, Northern Ireland, in the late 1960s.

Written and directed by Kenneth Branagh, who has described this as his "most personal film," this is a beautifully crafted valentine of family, community, political turmoil, cinema and irrevocable change, all brought vividly and believably to life thanks to an outstanding cast that includes Jamie Dornan and Caitriona Balfe as the parents, but most notably, the wonderful Judi Dench and Ciaran Hinds as the lovably arresting grandparents, and a stand-out scene-stealing performance by Jude Hill as the young boy Buddy at the centre of it all.

Primarily told in striking black & white by regular Kenneth Branagh cinematographer, Harris Zambarloukos, and aided by a superlative soundtrack by the legendary Van Morrison, along with virtuoso pacing, editing and period detail, this is as much a valentine and homage to cinema itself strongly and most delightfully referencing such films of the period as "One Million Years B.C." and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang," as well as the TV series "Thunderbirds" and earlier films through television such as "High Noon" (1952) and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."

Often compared to John Boorman's equally outstanding 1987 autobiographical WWII comedy-drama "Hope and Glory," this stands very much on its own, "Belfast" is a highly spirited, funny, tragic, heartfelt, poignant, intelligent and marvellously entertaining journey of reality and myth that all too many will so easily relate to as their own, and when all is said and done, as you gaze at the end credits you'll be wishing for more. 2022 Oscar nominations include Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor (Ciaran Hinds), Best Supporting Actress (Judi Dench), Best Director (Kenneth Branagh), Original Song (Down to Joy by Van Morrison).

Rourke’s Reviews Everything, Everywhere All At Once

■ (MA). 140 minutes. Opens in cinemas April 14.

Imagine if Charlie Kaufman and Michel Gondry directed Jet Li’s The One, and you’ll be on the way to understanding what kind of journey you will be taking.

Michelle Yeoh is terrific as Evelyn Wang, a Chinese-American who runs a laundromat with her husband Waymond (Ke Huy Quan, who most audiences won’t have seen on screen since the mid 80s, in Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom and The Goonies), and has a tempestuous relationship with her daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu).

Her very traditional father, Gong Gong (a superb James Hong), also lives with them.

While going through a particularly difficult audit with a tough IRS agent (Jamie Lee Curtis, having a whale of a time), Evelyn is suddenly made aware that the universe she lives in is not the only one, and that hundreds of others exist, each containing an alternate version of herself, and if she is unable to tap into their various skills, she won’t be able to defeat a powerful entity who wants to destroy everything.

Directors Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (who helmed the frustrating misfire Swiss Army Man) have carefully thought through their script, which is meticulously plotted, and the world building is convincing and enthralling.

Unfortunately the emotional core doesn’t resonate as much as the film-makers would like, so the epic nature of the story doesn’t fully work, which in turn makes the 140 minute running time feel somewhat unjustified.

Due to this, some elements fall into repetition. Production values are strong. While not a total bullseye, this is good fun, where everyone fully commits to the material.

More sensitive movie-goers may want to prepare themselves before going to see Happening, an outstanding, unforgettably intense drama, which shows in an unflinching manner the horrors that occur when reproductive rights are taken out of a woman’s hands.

Anne (Anamaria Vartolomei, in an incredible, supremely brave performance) is a student circa 1963, a smart and ambitious young woman who wants to become a teacher.

When Anne finds out she is expecting, she quickly finds out how hard it is to get support to terminate her pregnancy, as abortion is illegal in France at this time.

As each week goes by, and her options are quickly disappearing, Anne is forced to seek out a backstreet operator, and it’s a decision that could have serious repercussions on her health.

Based on the autobiographical novella by Annie Ermaux, this big screen adaptation by writer/director Audrey Diwan (Losing It) is passionate and confrontational, with the film-maker presenting the world of Anne and her friends in a natural, low-key fashion, filming a number of scenes in long, unbroken takes, intimately capturing her descent from a normal life where the world is her oyster, to a distressing, heartbreaking nightmare where a patriarchal system won’t allow her to choose what she does with her body.

Happening is not only a magnificent film, but an important one too, addressing a very real, sadly relevant subject, a horror story that appears to be returning to areas around the world (most prominently in the US).

Diwan deliberately makes what happens hard to watch, its graphic nature entirely appropriate, and hopefully audiences will see that this is a barbaric road that we cannot go down again.

The Good Boss

Writer/director Fernando Leon de Aranoa (Mondays In The Sun) returns with The Good Boss, a fluid, darkly funny, highly relevant film about how malignant modern work environments have become.

Javier Bardem is excellent as Blanco, the title character who exudes surface level charm which hides a cruel hypocrisy, believing image and success overrides basic human decency.

Blanco’s ability to control, seduce and crush those around him will be put to the test during a turbulent time for the manipulator, both on a personal and business level.

The film has a lot on its mind, dealing with topics such as employee expendability, gender and racial inequality, and power imbalance.

Even the product Blanco’s company manufactures, scales, is effectively used as a metaphor.

■ For those who remember radio station 3DB in the 1950s, and the beginning of GTV Channel 9 in Melbourne ,you may recall Geoff Corke.

Geoff Corke was born in Melbourne in 1935.

His father was a rubber plantation farmer in New Guinea, and Geoff spent some of his childhood there.

The family were evacuated in 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour and returned to Melbourne.

Geoff went to South Auburn Primary School and then Scotch College.

When he left college, Geoff started working for International Harvester as a tractor salesman.

He loved radio and one day he heard an advertisement for a position at 3DB on Danny Webb's breakfast show. He applied for the job and started working there as an office boy.

Geoff advanced to being a turntable operator and worked with many of the radio personalities such as Eric Pearce, Jack Little, Dick Cranbourne, Geoff McComas, Binny Lum and Stephanie Deste.

He eventually became an announcer on 3DB and he had a late night program.

Geoff gained television experience doing oncamera work in the Brashs store window. Norm Spencer invited Geoff to join GTV Channel 9 and when the test transmissions began on the September 27, 1956, Geoff Corke became the first person in Melbourne to be seen on "live to

air" television from the Mt Dandenong transmitter. The studios at Richmond had not been built at that stage.

When GTV9 opened in 1957 Geoff became a popular personality hosting breakfast shows and other programs such as Anything Goes, Penalty Box, Geoff and Judy and Happy Go Lucky.

Geoff was tall and "a gentle giant". When In Melbourne Tonight began, Geoff was working as the "off sider" to Graham Kennedy.

I used to go into the studios as an audience member to watch Geoff and Graham working together on - it was live television and brilliant to watch.

In 1958 Geoff married Val Ruff, who was a

singer at the television station and they were featured on the front cover of the first TVWeek magazine.

The marriage lasted about five years and they had a daughter Lindy.

In the early 1960s Geoff took over as host of The Tarax Show as King Corky, King of the Kids.

When Geoff took leave, Philip Brady was the replacement as ‘Prince Philip’.

Ron Blaskett and ‘Gerry Gee’ were always a big part of the show.

Geoff Corke was a private man and retired from television and public life in the late 1960s and concentrated on other projects.

In 1979 he married Sue, who he met whilst in hospital and Sue was his nurse.

They were happily married for 14 years.

Geoff Corke passed away in 1993 at the age of 58 after a long illness.

Geoff is the uncle of 3AW's Simon Owens.

Extended Canvas at Town Hall Gallery Review: Beauty

■ Whether it is said by Plato, Hungerford orLawrence Mooney ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ and, as the latter said, does not come from the audience of his latest show Beauty.

He is probably right too, with the almost full house at the Athenaeum Theatre consisting of over forties, a generation whose beauty is now not so obvious, yet old enough to know and appreciate this comedian /actor.

Mooney is a seasoned performer who can keep a show moving for over an hour with just a microphone and a couple of slides.

No topic is off limits, as such I would not recommend this show to under 20s or anyone easily offended by sexual, racist or ageist humour.

Much of Mooney’s show is visual; he is a terrific physical performer and can really create an image, mostly literally ‘below the belt’. Both the male and female body are described in detail.

Whilst nothing was off limits and an open mind required for most of the show, Mooney went too far with’ jokes’ about child sexual abuse.

I am glad I had not invited anyone I know personally traumatized by this and hope Mooney can reconsider these inclusions in future shows.

Lawrence Mooney is not just a terrific storyteller or stand up comedian he is a talented actor with an ability to impersonate.

He engaged the audience well by responding to those calling out respectfully as well as inviting us all to take part in a Malcolm Turnbull speech class.

‘Good on you’ Lawrence Mooney for maintaining a career for so many years that can still fill a venue of people ready and willing to laugh out loud.

The Ledger Collection

■ Laurence (Laurie) Ledger MBE and Emma Ledger and their farming enterprise ‘Wooleen’ are major benefactors to the gallery, donating works that have formed the backbone of the Collection and featured n many exhibitions.

This exhibition is drawn entirely from the works donated by the Ledgers, celebrating their incredible legacy. Displayed as a ‘salon hang’ the exhibition features over 200 works, which is approximately half of the Ledger’s total gift of artworks.

The Human Figure Benalla Art Gallery presents a suite of key figurative works from the Benalla Art gallery Collection.

This exhibition explores the ways in which artists have depicted the human figure across time. Banksia – Atong Atem Exploring the lesser-known history of Australia’s first African settlers, Banksia considers migrant stories from a non-colonial perspective.

The video – accompanied by an amazing score by Melbourne composer JerryAginya, and photographic series work in conjunction to reveal otherwise obscured layers of history on a cinematic scale.

The works highlight the experience of African men and women who arrived on the First Fleet in 1788 – a colonial history that started long before Atem’s own family arrived from South Sudan in 1987 In fostering a deeper understanding of Australia’s fist African migrants, Atem interrogates the shaping of national policy throughout the centuries.

The video work Banksia was commissioned by Rising and Illuminate Adelaide in partnership with The Nielson Foundation. Benalla Art Gallery will present for the first time a gallery exhibition of the photographic stills in concert with a gritty outdoor screening of the work of the video Banksia.

■ With so much choice at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival there should be something for everyone, Madeleine Stewart in my mind is that someone for everyone (over 16 – some coarse language).

In her 2022 show So Brave, Stewart tells her very personal story. Most of it is funny, some very intimate, all interesting, fresh, quirky and unique.

This 60 minutes was gone in no time, I could have enjoyed an hour more. There was a lot to laugh at. I did, out loud, along with others in the audience.

Not all of Stewart ’s show is funny. I found myself tear up on occasion with some very raw, personal family disclosures, some of which made me uncomfortable.

I am not sure how much a comedian should use parents for material, but it did provoke thought and highlight the negative influence some thoughtless words and behaviours can have on children.

Madeleine Stewart was mostly positive about the various influences on her life, and to those she wasn’t sounds like they deserved the ridicule.

She was ‘So Brave’ sharing so much of her life with a group of strangers out for a laugh on a Friday night.

Can’t be easy putting your whole self out there, no music, very few (cleverly used) props, just a woman, microphone and a unique,

interesting, often hilarious, very visual story to tell.

Madeleine Stewart, to quote many others in her life ‘you’re so funny’, with director Jason Marion she has put together a show not to be missed at this year’s event. See for yourself.

No Ball Games Allowed

■ Out of the first lockdown in Melbourne in 2020 came this postdramatic play written by Kristen Smyth (she-her), a work that explores where a young woman disappears and her life is remembered, a life that was both unsettling and particularly cathartic.

He further explains that as a trans woman, his mother struggled with accepting his transition and so to channel his sadness and frustration the seeds of No Ball Games Allowed were born.

The 50-minute work is set on a raised stage with a clever backdrop of a mirror wall tilted toward the audience that gives us a virtual 3D effect during the course of the dialogue and movement.

Back in 2018, the LiberalNational Federal Government launched the Regional and Small Publishers Innovation Fund.

Like most other publishers, The Local Paper was unsuccessful in its first application. The Liberal-Nationals Government played dumb politics - it rejected most of the publishers who publish their messages.

In a second try, an independent panel awarded a $74,000 grant for a local news project.

The Government gave the job of administering the fund to the Australian Media and Communications Authority.

The ACMA has procrastinated and stumbled its way through. Delay after delay, mistake after mistake.

The ACMA ticked off the first two of three payments ... albeit late payments. It paid $48,400.

The Local Paper delivered everything in good faith: 45 special Local People supplements. We provided a full acquittal: receipts, odometer readings, everything asked of it.

This scheme was supposed to help small publishers. Instead, the Morrison Government has short-changed us with broken promises. No way Scottie. No vote for you and your mates.

District race meetings of the 1880s ■ The Whittlesea Races meeting of 1882 was reported in The Evelyn Observer (Dec. 29): The annual meet of the above race club was held in the paddock adjoining Mr. Timms's hotel, Whittlesea, on Boxing Day. The weather was all that could be desired. There was a very good attendance. Mr. Timmss had a booth on the course, which was well stocked with refreshlments, and, its a matter of course, was well patronised by the public.

The racing on the, whole was good, and there were no disputes or serious accidents to mar the pleasure of the onlookers.

Mr. Taubman had very hard luck with his horse Young Confusion, who start for three events, and made a mull of each one; dislodging his rider twice, and running inside a post.

The Stewards, Messrs. R. Batten, E.H. Sorrell, W. Patton. P. McCormack, T. Glover, A. McDonald, J. Johnston, E.H. Macmeikan, R. H. Abbott, J. Masters, and D. Smith, deserve great praise for the way in which they conducted the meeting, as also do Mr. D. Johnston, jun., starter, Mr. J. Clark, judge, Mr. W. 'Timms, and Mr. W. Smith, clerk of the course.

Mr. William J. Collier was indefatigable in his exertions as secretary.

Of the Maiden Plate, the Observer noted: “Six horses started.

Ranger taking the lead and winiing, with Edith a good second. The rider of Young Confusion came to grief about a quarter of a mile from the starting post, and the horse, getting clear of its rider, bolited, jumnping a fence on his way.”

The Handicap Hurdle Race, with prize money of 8 sovereigns, was run over about one and a-half miles, over eight jumps about 3ft 7in high.

“Three horses started. This was a very one-sided race, Councillor going to the front and taking the hurdles in good style. Nellie Grey went once round the course, and was then pulled off, standing no show against Councillor.

“Ranger baulked at the third jump; after a few attempts lie managed to get over, but neither whip nor spur would make him face the fourth leap.”

Three started in the Ladies’ Purse, with entries limited to horses that been the bona fide property of persons living within six miles of the racecourse.

“This was a good race between Barwon and Midge, Young Confusion running inside a post, so of course was out of the race.”

The Farmers’ Purse was run over about one and a quarter miles.

“Five horses were entered for this race; four started, Councillor being scratched. It was a hard rice between Hlilda and Sovereign; the weight telling too much on the latter, Hilda came in first.”

Three started in the Publican’s Purse. “Councillor took the lead but was soon passed by his companions.

The Consolation Stakes was run for all horses that had been defeated during the meeting.

“Four started for this race. Sovereign gaining first honours. Young Confusion came to grass, but was not hurt.”

The ‘Hurry Scurry’ was the final race of the day: “This was the last race on the programme, and perhaps was the most exciting one of the day.

Coodabeen sadness

■ It was a Saturday morning institution. Listening to the Coodabeen Champions on the way to a Saturday footy match. The team were on ABC radio, but decided to make the switch to 3MP, and they now broadcast ob Friday afternoons.

Radio industry observers say the Coodabeens would now have less than a quarter of the number of metro listeners that they once had.

Happy at Healesville

■ Last week’s Grandstander column included a snippet on the Weekly Times tip that Healesville was on the slide in the Outer Eastern Division 1 competition.

They won Round 1, then brought home Seniors and Reserves victories last Saturday.

Easter rounds

■ Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League Division 1 fixtures for this weekend see Good Friday games between EdithvaleAspendale v Bonbeach, and Red Hill v Dromana. Saturday games are Rosebud v Sorrento and Pines v YCW. The Division 2 games are on Good Friday: Karingal v Mornington and Rye v Tyabb.

Outer East Premier Division, Division 1 and Division 2 takes a break over Easter. They are back on the ground on Saturday, April 23 - for the ANZAC Round.

Ine the Southern Division 1 competition, Springvale Districts v Dingley and Cheltenham v Cranbourne will be played on Good Friday. Saturday matches are Port Melbourne Colts v Mordialloc, Cheltenham v Bentleigh, East Malvern v St Paul’s McKinnon, St Kilda City v Cranbourne.

In the West, a Division 1 Good Friday contest will be staged between St Albans and Hoppers Crossing.

New cricket boss

■ Cricket Victoria has confirmed the appointment of David White as General Manager – Community Cricket.

Mr White has experience working in sport, events and local government and most recently led the City of Melbourne’s Event Partnerships Team.

He was previously the General Manager – Events and Leagues at Hockey Australia and has broad cricket administration experience at both club and national level with Cricket Australia.

Cricket Victoria CEO Nick Cummins welcomed the appointment.

“We’re pleased to welcome David to Cricket Victoria and look forward to his leadership in one of the key pillars of our organisation,” Cummins said.

“David has a strong affinity with cricket which, combined with his experience in other sports and local government, will be critical to working through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Cricket Victoria’s community division oversees wide-ranging support for clubs.
