■ IT’S showdown time between Darebin Councillors and Council officers. The question to be decided - ‘Who exactly is in charge? The elected Councillors? Or the $7000-a-week Chief Executive Sue Wilkinson? The majority of Councillors voted four weeks ago that signage and temporary safety fencing be erected around an asbestos contamination hotspot at Clements Reserve at Reservoir. One month later, neither instruction appears to have been actioned.

The stand-off comes just prior to Wednesday night’s Council meeting (Nov. 24) at which the Mayor for the next 12 months is due to be selected. Last week’s issue of The Local Paper revealed that a secret report to Councillors from a specialist firm, Prensa, identified potential lead poisioning at Clements Reserve from its days as a Northcote Rifle Club range. The Prensa report appears to be mysteriously disappeared from Councillors’ City-supplied computer system. Also surrounding the ‘who is in charge’ question is another instruction given by Councillors to Darebin Council CEO Sue Wilkinson to purchase a parcel of land from Vic Roads. That action also appears yet to be completed.
