INFECTION OUTBREAK

Statewide spotlight on West Heidelberg, Preston and Macleod

■ THE EYES of Victoria turned to Melbourne’s northern suburbs this week as a fresh Coronavirus outbreak delayed the easing of restrictions.

East Preston Islamic College, Croxton Special School and Regis Macleod Aged Care Facility were linked to fresh cases.

More than 12,000 tests were completed over the past week in the area including Darebin, Banyule, Nillumbik, Hume and Moreland.

Residents in Dallas, Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Preston and West Heidelberg who have even the mildest of symptoms are being encouraged to get tested for coronavirus.

Some 2500 tests were taken on Saturday. This led Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews to put a pause on announcing any ease of restrictions until all results were delivered. ● Turn To Page 4

■ In Hebrew days, the name ‘Jaala’ meant ‘mountain goat’ and ‘She Who Gets Somewhere Because She's Good At Something Useful’. In Victorian politics, Jaala Pulford has been described as “the best ‘retail’ politician’ in the state.

As Small Business Minister, the State Opposition has found Ms Pulford’s Archilles Heel. Her weakness is an inability to get her Ministry to deliver detailed jobs done on time.

It could be her downfall.

550 complaints ■ Shadow Attorney-General Edward O’Donohue nailed Ms Pulford in State Parliament this month: “ I have had a number of constituents contact me regarding their first-round applications for the Business Support Fund. They have had their applications rejected for reasons they believe are not correct,” Mr O’Donohue said.

“I note the Ombudsman is now investigating almost 550 complaints regarding similar issues. I have in recent days had a number of small business owners contact me regarding round three of the Business Support Fund.

“Despite this being the third round of the fund, there appears to be a number of issues with this process still, and the 10-day turnaround that many were promised is not eventuating.

“These grants are the difference in some businesses surviving or closing down, and Business Victoria does not seem to be able to assist these businesses with the issues that have been raised or provide any certainty or hope of when they will be.

“Minister, what are you doing to ensure businesses are being assessed accurately and quickly to ensure the support is being received as quickly as possible? “:The Federal Government has been able to do it. They got JobKeeper and other supports into the economy immediately. The Victorian Government should be able to do it as well.”

Sword of Damocles ■ In The Whip’s early reporting days around Magistrates’ Courts in Victoria, jurist Jennifer Coate was seen in action. Firm but fair.

Ms Coate soon became Deputy Chief Magistrate, then County Court Judge, then State Coroner, then President of the Children’s Court.

Judge Coate was named as one of the six Royal Commissioners appointed to investigate child sexual abuse by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

What a splendid choice that she heads the COVID-19 Hotel Quarantine Inquiry which this week is requiring refreshed statements from witnesses including Premier Daniel Andrews, Police Minister Lisa Nevillle, and Chief Health Officer Prof. Brett Sutton.

Additionally, there is evidence that is not in the public arena, with a number of restricted publication orders in place.

Do not underestimate Judge Coate’s ability to bring down findings that could potentially shake the Andrews Labor Government.

Points of Order ■ There could be some challenging times ahead for Government minister Martin Pakula.

■ State Parliamentarians have two sessions remaining for 2020: three days in mid-November, and three days in early December.

■ The Coate Inquiry could see the end of term for Premier Daniel Andrews.

■ The Government’s hand-brake on rural land owners clearing their properties will soon have ramifications as the fire season begins.

In addition, she has been Darebin Mayor, which has attracted an annual allowance of $109,000, with further expenses claims of $858 for mobile phone, $267 for internet, and $276 for conferences and training. Dr Rennie should discover this week if she - or one of her seven opponents - won the South Central Ward seat on Council.

● Jordan Watts Police are appealing for public as sistance to help locate missing Reservoir teen Jordan Watts. The 16year-old was last seen at an address in High Street on October 16. Police have concerns for her welfare due to her age and the length of time she has been missing.

Darebin City placed a statutory advertisement in The Age - at big expense - early this month to notify that the Annual Report would be presented to the October 19 Council meeting. City officers could have placed the same advertisement in The Local Paper at much cheaper rates, and made savings for ratepayers.

Your rates at work ... Darebin Councillors last week voted to advertise, expensively, in the statewide Herald Sun newspaper about a Fairfield lanewayroadway. Heaven knows why the Council is wasting money on advertising in a paper seen in places as far away as Mildura and Bairnsdale, when there is a perfectly adequate local newspaper within in its own municipality, and at less expense to ratepayers. Mayor Cr Susan Rennie was the only Councillor to vote against the overall motion relating to the roadway.

‘Fat Cats’ salaries revealed

■ Sue Wilkinson, Darebin Council Chief Executive Officer, is being paid an annual salary of $380,000-$389,999, a report revealed last week.

Darebin City Councillor met on Monday last week (Oct. 19) to ratify the annual financial report in which the salaries of the municipality’s are published.

Ms Wilkinson’s package reveals a weekly pay packet of at least $7307, more than $1000per-day.

The report indicated that another key manager received a package of $300,000 annually, with one on at least $280,000, and another on a minimum of $240,000 per year.

Three other key personnel were on minimums of $100,000, $110,000 and $150,000 per year.

The senior personnel were identified in the report as Sue Wilkinson, CEO; Sam Hewett, GM Operations and Capital; Rachael Ollivier, GM City Sustainability and Strategy; Ingrid Bishop, GM Governance and Engagement; Kerry McGrath, GM Community (a position previously held by Cathy Henderson).

A further 30 senior personnel employed by Darebin Council received annual packages of between $151,000-$280,000 per year.

500 ordered to isolate ■ More than 500 northern suburbs residents were ordered to isolate after a fresh outbreak of Coronavirus in the past week.

The fresh cases affected residents of Dallas, Roxburgh Park, Broadmeadows, Preston and West Heidelberg.

Additional cases were identified in a social housing block at Broadmeadows, where notices were issued to 120 residents advising them to self-solate for 48 hours.

A close contact was identified at Dallas Brooks Primary School. Other cases centred around the East Preston Islamic School.

Council will pay upfront for installation and supply of the solar power systems, last week’s meeting was told.

All participants are expected to be eligible for state government rebates. No interest is charged on special schemes.

Hey, big spenders ■ Darebin Mayor Susan Rennie’s big-spending $181 million income annual financial report for 2019-20 was handed down at last week’s Council meeting.

Some $127.7 million was raised from rates, up $1.7 million compared to the previous year.

Capital works represented $44 million, with just $4.4 million spent on roads. This was 2.4 per cent of the total rates income.

Usual expenses of $3 million did not occur because of the COVID-19 closures of leisure centres, golf courses, art venues, libraries and community centres. Accompanying revenue of $2.9 million did not occur.

The debtor balance of Darebin Council has increased by $4.2 million, compared to last year, because of COVID-19 deferred rates, which are interest-free.

There was a $6.2 million surplus for the financial year. The previous year’s surplus was $19.2 million.

There were delays in the completion of works on projects including Bundoora Homestead ($1.1 million), Bill Lawry Oval Pavilion ($1.0 million), Northcote Town Hall ($1.8 million), Northcote Aquatic and Recreation Centre ($600,000), and Reservoir Leisure Centre ($500,000).

Call to help women’s sport ■ Northern Metropolitan MLC Craig Ondarchie has called for more facilities for women’s sport.

“There are not enough facilities to meet the demand for outdoor playing space, and many of my clubs in Melbourne’s north lack basic changing facilities and training for young women,” Mr Ondarchie told Martin Pakula, State Sports Minister.

“If we are serious about encouraging more girls and women to play sport in Victoria, we have to provide appropriate funding so they can have the change rooms and facilities they need.

“Many of these girls and women are getting changed at home or getting changed in the car or after the game going home to shower and get changed. It is simply not acceptable.

Zero emissions at W’sea ■ The City of Whittlesea is launching the Council's Zero Net Emissions Plan.

Its goal is to become a leader in clean, sustainable living and a Zero Net Emissions organisation by 2022.

Nick Mazzarella , Manager Major Projects, said the plan sets a clear, strong, achievable pathway in climate change action.

“We know how important it is to address climate change, which is not just a distant problem, but one that science tells us we can expect to bring serious impacts at a local level in the coming years.

“In fact, most experts believe we are dealing with the adverse effects already, as we saw with last summer’s severe bushfires,” Mr Mazzarella said.

Council has already upgraded 12,500 street lights with LED and CFL lamps, installed solar power systems across more than 60 Council buildings and purchased fuel efficient and electric vehicles for Council’s fleet among other energy initiatives.

“Since 2011, we have reduced our annual emissions by 19.7 per cent and reduced our annual energy and operation costs by $1.175 million,” Mr Mazzarella said.

Odd Spot Binary blunder?

One of the key initiatives is to insist on traditional labels of ‘male’ and ‘female’ on its people.

Yet, Darebin Council’s Annual Report, published last week does just that. The document examines its 1316 people which includes 766.62 full-time equivalent employees, and assigns them either a male or female tag.

According to the report, there are 225 permanent full-time - females, 283 permanent full-time - males, 162.8 permanent parttime - females, 30.8 permanent part-time males, 41.1 temporary - females, and 23.9 temporary - males.

■ A volunteer group has been left disappointed after its hard work maintaining the Kilmore East Reserve was disregarded by thieves who stole all seating and a beloved statue from the park.

“In the last two weeks and over a number of years someone has stolen one composite timber-look park bench, two timber slab seat bench tops, two huge timber slab tables with matching seats, and one kookaburra carved wooden statue," said Mandy McCracken.

Deer, oh deer

■ Nillumbik Council hosted a two-hour online webinar Deer Information Session to address the continuing problem of wild Sambar deer causing considerable destruction in the shire.

A Council representatve told the Diary “198 people booked a place at the deer webinar, with 270 people tuning in”.

This is a surprisingly high number, particularly as other household members not counted may have been watching as well, and perhaps indicates the seriousness of the deer problem in the Shire.

Wall damage

■ Two males have been arrested after it was alleged they vandalised the newly opened Warburton Water World earlier this month.

A 19-year-old Warburton male and a 15year-old male have been charged on summons after the water park was damaged on October 4. It is alleged the pair, who will face court at a later date, caused over $4000 worth of damage to the newly opened attraction.

■ Lynette Schiavello, the manager of Westfield Doncaster’s MyChemist store, is retiring on Friday (Oct. 30) after more than three decades working at the centre.

Small businesses await funds ■ The Andrews State Government boasts on its Business Victoria website that most applications for business grant funds are processed within five business days.

Opposition spokesman David Davis this month raised the matter of substantial delays, often months and months, for grant funds to reach struggling local businesses.

“Minister, all of us in this chamber are in contact with many small businesses, and the story is the same everywhere. There are long delays in getting those grants, and I ask: can the businesses expect all of these grants that they are entitled to by the end of the week or by the end of the month?” Mr Davis asked.

Jaala Pulford, Small Business Miniser, replied: “That is a very broad question, and it assumes that I know the details of literally tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of applications.

“I would reflect on Minister Symes’s recommendations that there have been more grants paid to businesses in the last six months than there have been in the previous six years, to just give you a sense of the scale of the task, and where applications are requiring further information then there is a process to get that.

Questions on manslaughter law ■ The hundreds of aged care deaths due to COVID-19 have been raised in State Parliament this month by Shadow Attorney-General Edward O’Donohue, MLC for Eastern Victoria.

“My question is to the Minister for Workplace Safety,” said Mr O’Donohue. “Minister, noting the almost 800 deaths resulting from the hotel quarantine debacle, many of those deaths since July 1, and with negligent conduct continuing until recently, will the industrial manslaughter laws apply to every minister with respect to the hotel quarantine debacle?

Ingrid Stitt, Western Metropolitan MLC and Minister for Workplace Safety, replied: “As the member would be aware, the workplace manslaughter legislation was developed to ensure that every employer and officer would be accountable, whether that was in the public or the private sector.

“As the member would recall, under hat legislation that passed through this house, there were no exceptions to liability for the Crown, and the government and government agencies owe duties under occupational safety law like every other employer.

Crisis in public housing ■ Northern Metropolitan MLC Samantha Ratnam (Greens) has questioned the State Government about public housing.

“Independent research suggests that Victoria’s public housing waiting list has grown to now be over 100,000 people, or over 50,000 households. Can the minister confirm that there are now over 100 000 people on the housing register in Victoria, and if not, how many people are waiting for a safe and secure home in Victoria?”

The majority of residents consider the Local Option business an utter farce. Wonga Park does not possess either an hotel or wine establishment, and the nearest of any of these is a distance of 5 miles.

Kinglake West ■ The sports carnival held at Kinglske West in aid of the local Tennis Court was a great success financially and otherwise. The sports events were keenly competed for. The potatoes shown were excellent, the judging being in the capable hands of Mr Balharry, of Glen Vale, who gave every satisfaction, Mr Pearce, sen., secured first prize in the white variety, Mr D. McNimmie second ; red variety, Mr Pearce first, Mr Burton second. The committee are to be congratulated on having such a very popular and energetic Secretary. Miss Scott is to be complimented on the way in which she carried out her duties, for which the committee have much to thank her for The Tennis Club have arranged to play a tournament, and later on hope to arrange matches with other clubs.

Wallan East ■ Polling day passed off very quietly locally, and not a great deal of interest was taken in the Bulls contest, as it was generally conceded that Mr A. R. Robertson would win easily as not many apparently favoured the Farmers' Union candidate, and as a matter of fact Mr .Robertson polled about two votes to one by Mr McGuine's at Wallan.

More interest was taken in the liquor referendum, and no one seemed to know how the vote was going to go. A large number of temperance advocates voted for continuance, as they thought that the present Act was full of holes, and it would be better to let things as they were, so that a better and fairer Local Option Act could be brought in. A good number who voted against prohibition were of opinion that the Labor Party's proposal to nationalise the drink trafficwas the best solution of the matter.

● Roy Joseph rehearses Loaded.

■ The 1995 debut novel from Christos Tsiolkas, Loaded, instantly hit a nerve.

Its cinematic adaptation, Head On, exploded into cinemas three years later.

A new production for the Malthouse stage was set to do the same until the strange times we’re in made a live version impossible.

Instead, Tsiolkas and playwright Dan Giovannoni have reimagined Loaded as an immersive four-part digital audio play.

Directed by Stephen Nicolazzo, Roy Joseph’s Ari has lost none of his zeal for sex, drugs, rock and roll and non-stop partying.

Heaven, for Ari, is sound-tracked by Nile Rogers.

“Heaven is old school disco,” he tells us.

We follow Ari through a 24-hour bingefest of drug-taking, drug dealing, clubbing and hook-ups around inner-city Melbourne.

Tsiolkas and Giovannoni state that this is Ari’s story reconceived for the 21st century.

This feels like a 90s story; its cultural awareness is firmly planted before the new millennium.

Much of what might have been shocking in the 90s is now mainstream.

We are no longer reaching for the smelling salts at the thought of gay sex and drag queens.

After all, every millennium is on either Tinder or Grindr now.

Now and then contemporary references— Taylor Swift, FKA Twigs—are thrown in almost as an afterthought.

They are not grounded in the narrative, nor did they need to be.

What Loaded does evoke is a feeling of nostalgia for those heady times where uni students could hold parties in share houses instead of being stuck at home with their parents in these dark days of lockdown.

In 2020, the party is definitely over.

■ Once a faraway curiosity vicariously experienced via Hollywood films, over the past two decades Halloween has become increasingly popular in Australia.

This year's All Hallows Eve occurs on a weekend for the first time in five years, and many young Australians will be in search of scary thrills and trick-or-treat lollies.

The spanner in the spider web is that Coronavirus restrictions mean some activities could incur a fine that would frighten even the spookiest gaggle of ghosts.

"We'll have more to say on this closer to the time, but as current restrictions stand, trick-or-treating would not be allowed in metropolitan Melbourne," a Victorian Department of Health and Human Services spokesman said.

The news is better for Victorians living outside Greater Melbourne. "Halloween could take place in regional Victoria, but with COVID-safe guidelines," the DHHS spokesmansaid.

In West Hollywood last year over 450,000 people celebrated Halloween on the boulevard outside the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites. I believe it will be reduced in numbers for 2020.

Quarterback digs deep ■ The series titled "Abolition for the People: The Movement for a Future Without Policing & Prisons" is a partnership between Kaepernick Publishing and the Medium publication Level that builds on a rich tradition of Black organising and freedom-fighting, according to the website.

"Over the next four weeks, we will publish 30 essays from political prisoners, grassroots organizers, movement leaders, scholars, and family members of those affected by anti-Black state violence and terrorism," Colin Kaepernick wrote in the debut essay titled The Demand for Abolition that was published on Tuesday.

The essays will focus on several themes, including police and policing, prisons and abolition of police instead of reform.

The former NFL quarterback explained what each of the categories means and what it will encompass in the series.

■ As we age, the countless cells and neurons in our brains can come under attack from harmful tangles and plaque build-ups.

This interference is the common cause of dementia, which destroys the memory and thinking abilities of many seniors. While scientists continue to work on treatments for dementia, a new study finds your personality may be the best weapon you have.

Researchers at North Western University say anxious and moody people are more susceptible to the effects of brain damage later in life. A review of patient brains donated to science finds certain people can still function at a high level despite having the same neuropathology of someone suffering from cognitive decline. Reviewing annual psychosocial surveys these patients took before their deaths, researchers discovered individuals with a greater tendency for self-discipline, organization, diligence, high achievement, and motivation fight off the causes of dementia better than others.

This personality, known as having a high level of conscientiousness, shows a link to better resilience against memory and thinking problems. On the other hand, patients who experience anxiety, moodiness, impulsivity, and generally worry more have less cognitive function before their deaths. "These findings provide evidence that it is possible for older adults to live with the neuropathology associated with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias while maintaining relatively healthy levels of cognitive function," lead study author Eileen Graham says

■ Around the world, a million bottles of water are sold every minute, and although they're almost entirely recyclable, most get tossed into landfills, clog up rivers, and sink to the bottom of the sea, taking anywhere from 500 to 1000 years to degrade.

In the US, more than 70 per cent become waste.

In just a few decades, water went from a common resource many of us, especially those in the developed world, could access with minimal impact, to an incredibly popular packaged commodity with a serious environmental footprint.

Companies have had enormous commercial success selling us on the idea that water is better bottled.

They have marketed their products as healthy, energyboosting, ultra-hydrating, youth-enhancing and pure.

Today, a true connoisseur can buy a $90 bottle of water extracted from melted Norwegian icebergs, while the average consumer thinks nothing of dropping a buck-fifty on 16 ounces of a liquid that tumbles from the tap at home.

"Companies like Nestlé and Coke are taking the public's water, putting it in a plastic bottle and marketing it," said Judith Enck, founder of Beyond Plastics and a former EPA regional administrator under President Barack Obama.

In some ways, their success is the ultimate expression of modern capitalism.

At the root of multiple, enormous environmental crises is an industry that has risen to a market value of $160 billion in 2019 by convincing the world to buy something most of us can get virtually for free.

While the US has some of the safest tap water in the world, public systems are imperfect.

This was made very clear by the crisis in Flint, Michigan, where a switch in the city's water supply in 2014, made to save money, ended up piping tainted water into people's homes.

Even six years after the scandal, distrustful of the water flowing from their taps and the pandemic stalling the city's work to finish replacing its water pipes some residents continue to rely largely on millions of donated bottles of water to get by.

But the industry hasn't become an economic behemoth by providing an essential service in times of crisis. It has captured customers with big claims and bold branding.

We continue to lap it up. Bottled water overtook soda as the largest beverage category in the US in 2016.

Americans bought 14.4 billion gallons of bottled water in 2019 and global sales are only expected to grow, predicted to reach $307.6 billion by 2025.

Statues pulled down ■ Two statues of Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt in Portland, Oregon, have suffered a now-familiar fate after being torn down by protesters and daubed in red paint.

According to KATU News, a gathering of protesters in the southwest of the city was declared a riot by police after the statues were targeted.

Earlier in the night, Portland Police said protesters had been caught trying to pull down a statue with a chain, and warned that they would use tear gas and "impact weapons" if the gathering didn't disperse.

The warning apparently fell on deaf ears as police later declared a riot, and photos published by KATU showed that the two statues had been pulled to the ground.

The viewership numbers for the sixth and final game of the NBA Finals are in, and they are atrocious.

Game 6 drew, at its peak, 6.028 million viewers.

To put that in perspective, Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, which included a team from Canada and did not include LeBron James, drew 18.34 million viewers.

Those figures represent a 66 per cent drop.

The heavy viewership losses are consistent with disastrous viewership numbers from the first half of the series when games one through three drew consecutive, historically low numbers.

Indeed, the low numbers are consistent with an entire season of bad television viewership performances.

The NBA restarted its season, after a five-month hiatus due to the Coronavirus, by making social justice messaging and imagery a center piece of their television broadcasts.

That messaging was greeted with historic drops in ratings, drops largely due to fan dissatisfaction with the overtly political nature of the games

Magazine ■ My first memory of seeing Richard Widmark in a film was as a giggling gangster who pushed an old lady in a wheelchair down a flight of stairs in Kiss Of Death. I thought what a rat!

Then, as a 10-year-old who knew everything, I saw him in a film titled The Frogmen where he played a ‘goodie’ and I immediately changed my mind - what a guy! I thought to myself.

From that time on I was a fan of Richard Widmark. Richard Weedt Widmark was born in Minnesota in 1914.

His father was a travelling salesman and the family moved to various locations during Richard's childhood.

He studied acting at college and made his radio debut at the age of 14. He tried to enlist during the war years but was rejected because of a perforated ear drum.

Richard worked in radio and appeared in many popular shows including an ongoing role in the serial Front Page Farrell.

In 1942 he married Jean Hazelwood and they had a daughter. The following year he appeared in the Broadway comedy, Kiss And Tell.

Richard Widmark made his film debut in 1947 as Tommy Udo, the giggling killer in Kiss Of Death, the film that impressed me as a child.

The role must have also impressed others as he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

After his contract with Twentieth Century Fox studios expired Richard became a freelance actor and even appeared as himself in an episode of the television series I Love Lucy.

During his career Richard Widmark starred in more than 60 films. He worked for various studios and starred in films such as Hell And High Water, Broken Lance, The Last Wagon, How The West Was Won and Murder On The Orient Express.

One of my favourites was Judgment At Nuremberg. Richard played the prosecuting at-

Many of the actors in the film worked for a fraction of their normal salary because they felt

the subject matter was very important.

He also starred opposite Doris Day in the romantic comedy The Tunnel Of Love which was a complete departure from his ‘tough guy’ roles.

The film was directed by Gene Kelly, but it was not a success at the box office.

In 1968 Richard starred in the successful film Madigan which was later produced as a television series.

His acting idol was Spencer Tracy and he became a good friend of Sidney Poitier afterthey made three films together. From everything I have read about Richard Widmark during my research it seems that he was a decent human being.

In his later years he enjoyed being at his farms in California and Connecticut.

His final film was True Colours with John Travolta in 1991. Sadly his wife passed away in 1997 and Richard married again in 1999.

Richard Widmark passed away in Connecticut, after a long illness, in 2008 at the age of 93.

Talking Blak to History at National Museum ■ Remarkable, rarely seen objects feature in Talking Blak to History.

A new exhibition and introduction to the First Australians gallery showcases objects drawn from the National Museum of Australia's extensive indigenous collections.

National Museum Director, Dr Mathew Trinca, said: "The carefully chosen objects in Talking Blak to History celebrate indigenous cultures and open the gallery's conversations on issues including land rights, sovereignty, cultural renaissance and deaths in custody.

"The undeniable power of the objects draws visitors into the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander story."

It begins with one of the Museum's treasures, Uta Uta Tjangala's stunning work Yumari (1981).

Other highlights include Vernon Ah Kee's artwork Canchant (about 2010), a 'surfboard' depicting an image of his grandfather's face, and the 1992 Renault Twingo car decorated with John Moriarty's Balarinji Wunala Dreaming design, which Frenchman Jean Dulon drove on a 25,000kilometre promotional tour of Australia in 1994.

The exhibition includes objects never before displayed at the Museum, including Queenie McKenzie's painting Mistake Creek Massacre (1997) which references the 1915 incident in which eight indigenous people were killed, a two-metre-high metal basket (2014) by Lorraine Connelly-Northey, and dialysis equipment from the remote Kintore community in the Western Desert.

There are rarely seen works by artists including Michael Cook, William 'Bill' Onus, Julie Gough, Yondee (Shane Hansen) and Kevin Gilbert.

Head of the museum's Indigenous Knowledges Curatorial Centre, Margo Neale, said: "Talking Blak to History provides a counterpoint to the white narrative that has dominated the national story for so long.

"Talking Blak reveals feelings about attachment to Country. It tells stories of survival and resilience, overcoming the grief and loss brought about by colonisation through endurance, reconciliation and truth-telling.

■ Seven has received a wrap over the knuckles for a segment aired in May on the Morning Show. Case entailed Seven screening a blatant advertorial for a major retailer.

The advertorial failed to disclose to viewers the segment was a paid advertorial. The advertising police pounced, Seven apologised and gave the retailer a credit yet more fines and penalties are yet to be adjudicated.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs HUBIE HALLOWEEN (M/Streaming on NETFLIX): In his hometown of Salem, simpleton and good natured Hubie Dubois is a figure of mockery for kids and adults alike, but this Halloween, there's something more that's going bump in the night, and it's up to Hubie to save the town.

Following on from his critically acclaimed performance as the fast talking ill-fated jeweller in 2019's "Uncut Gems," any credibility Adam Sandler established in that one is thrown to the wind in this generally harmless but unashamedly inane comedy-horror romp that fails overwhelmingly in scares, laughs and intelligence, throughout which Adam Sandler, as the central character of Hubie Dubois, delivers an almost unintelligible performance and characterization that makes any Donald Trump speech look and sound positively Shakespearian by comparison.

Brisk and bright, but woefully unbalanced and sketchy, the standout cast includes Kevin James, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Maya Rudolph, Michael Chiklis, Rob Schneider and Ben Stiller in a cameo, but all seem lost as they deliver lame dialogue and clichéd expressions, but overall, comedy or drama, or both, Halloween has been the subject of many memorable films, and inspires each year the traditional viewing of many great classic movies, but sadly, with the exception of the end credits, this diabolically dumb, frightfully unfunny and ultimately forgettable fantasy-horror-comedy pot-boiler fails to make the list by a mile. by Tom Wolfe that explores the Mercury 7 astronauts and the origins and growth of the United States' space program.

I don't mean to be a grump, but the big question for this series is why? This well made and well cast effort with good production design and period detail is only a shell of the classic book by Tom Wolfe and subsequent film, one of the major disappointments in the series is the exclusion of the very key element of "The Right Stuff," that of legendary breaking the sound barrier test pilot Charles "Chuck" Yeager, and overall, lacks the sheer energy, emotional impact and gripping ferocity of Philip Kaufman's 1983 multi Oscar winning 193 minute blockbuster movie of the same name, also driven by an unforgettable super-charged Oscar winning score by Bill Conti.

Remaking any much revered movie based on a literary classic is a fragile undertaking fraught with all kinds of emotional and physical obstacles at the best of times, but turning a classic movie into a TV series is even more so, a current example now streaming is "The Haunting of Bly Manor" based on the novel "The Turn of the Screw"

by Henry James and the subsequent classic 1961 film "The Innocents" starring Deborah Kerr, and the upcoming remake of "Rebecca" from the celebrated novel by Daphne Du Maurier and the highly revered Oscar winning 1940 film by Alfred Hitchcock.

As for "The Right Stuff" the TV series, all new generations may find it of interest, but I'm three episodes in and I won't be returning to it, and like all remakes, there will always be the original inspirations to fall back on, and at best, this series serves well only as a trailer for both the original literary masterpiece and the unmissable pulse-pounding 1983 cinematic classic, both of which are what "The Right Stuff" is really all about, and then sum! Stars: **1/2 THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD (PG/New to DVD and Blu-Ray, and Now Streaming on AppleTV & Goodle Play): A unique take on Charles Dickens' semi-autobiographical classic set in 1840s England that chronicles the life of its iconic title character as he navigates a chaotic world to find his elusive place within it.

A delightfully brisk comedy-drama from Co-Writer and Director Armando Iannucci, whose previous credits include the award winning series Veep (TV), The Thick of It (TV) and subsequent film In The Loop, as well as the acclaimed satire The Death of Stalin (2017), and this time delivers an engaging and entertaining period tale with a stellar cast all in top form that includes Dev Patel, delivering an energetic and sprightly performance as David Copperfield, along with veterans Hugh Laurie, Tilda Swinton, Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw.

As you would expect from Armando Iannucci, this is driven by a solid screenplay and tautly concise direction, and along with superb production design, period detail, set design and cinematography, the end result is a colourful 19th century journey full of wit, drama, surrealism and satire that is sure to send you on the way when all is said and done with a smile on your face and a spring in your step.

Rourke’s Reviews Blackpink ■ Light Up The Sky (PG). 80 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Though it never quite goes into particular areas one would like explored, this ultra-slick documentary detailing the rise of one of K-Pop's biggest groups is a great introduction to Blackpink, offering up a pretty good profile of its very talented members.

Blackpink debuted in 2016 (I remember hearing their terrific single Boom-Bayah for the first time on SBS PopAsia, which we got before their actual debut single, Whistle), but each member, Jennie, Lisa, Rose and Ji-soo, had to endure between four and six years of intense training before that chance could eventuate.

Like many K-Pop artists, this meant that a huge chunk of their childhood basically disappeared, while dealing with incredible amounts of responsibility, isolation and pressure.

The K-Pop industry will always remain very well-guarded about how this affects all these young people wanting to achieve success, but after high profile suicides such as Goo Hara (from Kara), Sulli (from f(x)) and Jong-hyun (from SHINee), company executives have had to start taking the mental welfare of the artists they promote seriously, whether it be how hard they are pushed, or in dealing with the horrific abuse these impressionable people suffer on social media.

Things look a little ominous early on when the group's producer/ songwriter Teddy Park is the one talking about the group members, but once the four women themselves are placed front-and-centre, the documentary improves considerably, and director Caroline Suh manages the impressive feat of getting information from the artists that means more if you read between the lines (I didn't know that Rose grew up in Melbourne; she even still has a bit of an Aussie accent).

But Suh also captures how each member connected, and best of all, shows both the passion they have for music, and the genuine talent that they do possess. Blackpink : Light Up The Sky may keep certain aspects of the industry in the dark, but it does categorically show that K-Pop does contain genuinely talented artists, who train long and hard to get where they are, and Blackpink are a perfect example of that, and hopefully this documentary will help increase their already sizeable fanbase.

The group's first full album, simply entitled Blackpink : The Album, is available now, and is a great listen, and definitely worth the pur-

chase. I am also eagerly awaiting the next full album by supergroup Twice, called Eyes Wide Open, which was released on October 26 (and helps celebrate the group's fifth anniversary), Mamamoo's tenth mini-album Travel, due November 4, and Loona's third mini-album 12.00, which came out on October 19.

The Mortuary Collection

■ (MA). 111 minutes. Now streaming on Shudder.

Anthology films have always been a hit-and-miss affair, but sometimes a true classic is delivered (Dead Of Night, Kwaidan and Creepshow are prime examples, while Ghost Stories, Trilogy Of Terror, the Three Extreme films, Cat's Eye and Phobia 2 are all very entertaining), and while it may not be quite on same level as those first three mentioned, The Mortuary Collection is a beautifully crafted concoction that deserves both notice and praise, making for perfect Halloween viewing. The framing story is set at an appropriately dour funeral home, run by the eerily unhealthy looking Montgomery Dark (a wonderful Clancy Brown, of Highlander and Buckaroo Banzai fame), who is interviewing young, enthusiastic Sam (Caitlin Custer) for an assistant position.

Curious rather than repulsed by her surroundings, Sam asks Dark for a gruesome story, which the mortician happily agrees to serve up.

A total of four stories will be told.

While the tales themselves are rather predictable, it is the level of care, detail and imagination afforded to each that makes them so entertaining, and the non-specific time period allows horror fans to see rich homages to films from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s.

Writer/director Ryan Spindell, making his feature film debut, has spent seven years bringing this project to life, and the love and affection shows in every frame and character.

While obviously a huge fan of the genre, Spindell doesn't make his film an empty imitation, instead filling it with an identity all its own.

Production values are absolutely first-rate, and indeed this is a real feast for the eyes.

Though horror fans will get an extra kick out of what transpires onscreen, general audiences will be able to enjoy this too, seeing a filmmaker truly investing in his material in the best possible way.

Open race for the Victoria Derby

■ The Danny O'Brien-trained youngster, Young Werther, heads the betting for the Victoria Derby to be run at Flemington this Saturday.

In one of the most open Derbies in recent years, Young Werther, by the top New Zealand sire, Tavistock, is the punters pick despite having only had the two runs.

At his outing at Geelong, back on September 6, he impressed good judges with the way he won over 1500 metres in winning his maiden, coming home with a good split of 35.26 seconds for the last 600 metres.

O'Brien then took him to Flemington on October 3 running him in the Super Impose Stakes over 1800 metres on the spacious circuit.

It was a good run at his second try, stepping up in class from a maiden to get beaten by a smart galloper in Khoekhoe, in the care of Matt Cumani.

It's common knowledge that O'Brien feels he has another good youngster in his stable alongside two stars, Russian Camelot and Vow and Declare.

It is a big ask for the three-year-old at only his third run, but he is classy.

In early markets on the TAB he is being quoted at $5 to get the biscuits.

On the next level is another that has impressed and that is Hit the Shot, who got home hard over 2000 metres at Caulfield on Cup Day behind Albarado, to finish third in a tight finish.

That run impressed a lot of shrewd judges who marked him as one to watch.

That was his fourth outing, having won his first race at Ballarat, back on August 20.

He then put in an ordinary run when eighth at Moonee Valley, when he was up in class.

He then got within a length of the placegetters at Flemington over 1800 metres coming home strongly, back in fourth place, impressing many with the run.

Hence the $8 being offered on the TAB. Two runners fought out the finish of the Caulfield Classic over 2000 metres with nothing much separating them at the finish, with Albarado beating Let's Karaka Deel.

Both are being quoted at around the $9 mark, Albarado is with the powerful stable of Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young at Cranbourne, whom have a dearth of good horses.

While Let's Karaka Deel is with another top combination, in Ciaron Maher and David Eustace at Caulfield.

Both youngsters are bred to stay, Albarado is by the Cox Plate winner, Savabeel, and Let's Karaka Deel, is by the top New Zealand sire, Dundeel.

So both will stay OK over the 2500 metre trip of the Derby at Flemington.

Next is the early Derby favourite in Cherry Tortoni, prepared by leading trainer Pat Payne, who trains from Plumpton, west of Melbourne.

The stable decided to give him a try in the Champion Stakes in Sydney, on October 10 over 2000 metres, but he was found wanting towards the end of the race fading out of it, on a good four track.

He has been set for the Victoria Derby over the 2500 metre journey, and I feel he can get

Melbourne Cup

● Surpise Baby.Racing Photos. the Caulfield Classic behind Albarado, over the 2000 metres, and will improve on that run.

It was only his third outing, having run third at his first try at Donald, running over 1354 metres, coming from last at the turn, beaten three lengths.

At his next outing he won in good fashion at Ballarat, over 1600 metres, coming from fifth at the turn, racing away to win by 1.5 lengths.

He is one improving, as the distance goes out, and is bred to stay being by the English sire, Redwood, out a New Zealand mare.

Plus, the combination of Price and Kent Junior, are hard to beat, when they are on song.

I feel it is one of the hardest Victoria Derbies to pick.

If I had a bet, I would stick with the favourite, Young Werther, and, Cherry Tortoni, especially at the odds.

■ The Aidan O'Brien trained galloper Tiger Moth is the one to beat in the Melbourne Cup, mainly on weights, getting in with 52.5 kilos for the big one.

He has only had four starts winning two of those, with two minors.

He is by the English Derby winner, Galileo, out of an Irish bred mare, so the distance shouldn't worry him, although he has hadn't much experience for a four-year-old.

On the second line is Russian Camelot, who contested the Cox Plate.

He is all class, but he would still have to get the 3200 metres.

The good young Victorian stayer, Surprise Baby, in top of his form this season so far, has got to be the one to beat among the Australians.

His run in last year's Melbourne Cup was a beauty, after getting into trouble, he flashed home for fifth behind Vow and Declare.

He has done everything right since resuming, over distances a bit short for him.

The English Derby winner, Anthony Van Dyck, ran a great race with his 58.5 kilos in the Caulfield Cup coming from barrier 17.

He came from 16th in the running at the 600 metre mark, to go down by only a neck to the good mare, Verry Elleegant, in the Caulfield Cup. Think Big won the Melbourne Cup back in 1975, with the same weight, but it is a big ask, but he is all class.

I am a little concerned about whether Verry Elleegant can run a strong 3200 metres with her 55.5 kilos.

I like Tiger Moth, Russian Camelot, Surprise Baby, Anthony Van Dyck, and Verry Elleegant.

Looking for a Professional to run the show? back to his best. He has only had six starts down for three wins and two minor placings, so you have got to get him a chance.

Rewards reaped at Charlton

■ Charlton commenced the week on Monday October 19 and 10Y0 Courage Under Fire-Realy Dry gelding Realy Under Fire, a winner of 14 races appeared to be thrown into the 1609 metre Charlton Supports Tim Tetrick Pace and those who supported him reaped the rewards.

Trained at Heathcote by Jim O'Sullivan for daughter Shannon and teenage son Sean, Realy Under Fire with Shannon in the sulky showed his usual gate speed to lead from gate three, before taking a trail on former South Australian Courts Bliss which went forward from outside the front line to assume control.

Enjoying the run of the race, Realy Under Fire dashed through along the sprint lane in the shadows of the post to gain the day by a head, with Jilliby Roy third 6 metres back off a three wide trail from mid-field in the last lap. The mile rate 1-58.3.

■ Kingston part-owner/trainer/driver Steve Martin landed the Meadowlands Racing & Entertainment Trotters Handicap over 2570 metres with honest 5Y0 Angus Hall-Petite Flair mare The Girls Gotflair in 2-05.9.

Jumping straight to the front from the pole, The Girls Gotflair first up since August was able to dictate the terms to a nicety with no pressure being applied and under hard driving defied all challengers to defeat Sonny Brooke (one/one three wide home turn) by a nose, with Sarahleonie Bow third a head away after trailing the winner and using the sprint lane.

■ Lawrence trainer Ken Whelan snared the Thank You Peter Hibberd and Buloke Time Trotters Mobile over 2100 metres with 4Y0 Louey Louey Louey-Telern Tilly gelding Charlie Walker. Raced by Merna and Ken Whelan along with Maryborough's Geoff Walker, Charlie Walker driven by Chris Alford possied four back in the moving line from gate two on the second line travelling sweetly throughout.

Going forward three wide solo in the final circuit, Charlie Walker raced clear halfway up the running to register a 1.2 metre margin from Mystic Chip (one/one) and Blis Valley which raced exposed from the bell, finishing 4.7 metres in arrears of the runner up. The mile rate 2-03.2.

■ Rochester breeder/owner/trainer Neville Pangrazio's Hes Watching-Modern Velocity filly Covered Kyle was a strong victor of the 1609 metre North West AG Services 2Y0 Pace in a 156.6 mile rate.

Driven by James (Herbie) Herbertson, Covered Kylie came out quickly from gate three as Tay Tay whizzed across the face of the field from outside the front line to lead leaving her in the open. Gaining cover for the final circuit when Ifitstobeitsuptome went forward from near last to shadow the leader at the bell, Covered Kylie after easing wide in the straight finished best to score by 1.4 metres from the pacemaker, with Ifitstomebeitsuptome holding down third a half neck back.

Quinella snared

■ Cranbourne trainer Dylan Stratford based at the training centre on course, snared the quinella in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile over 2080 metres at his home track on Sunday October 18 with Scooting Around and Goober - the victor being 3Y0 Bacardi Lindy-Redneck gelding Scootin Around in a mile rate of 2-04.6.

Driven by Zac Phillips, Scootin Around starting from outside the front line was restrained at the start to settle well back in the field, before going forward with a rush to join the leader Hades Sky prior to the bell.

Angling to the back of the pacemaker when the lead was unavailable, Scooting Around enjoyed a sweet trip for the rest of the journey.

Using the sprint lane, Scootin Around bloused his death-seating last lap stablemate by a half head, with Hades Sky holding down third 4.5 metres back. Scootin Around is raced by long time harness enthusiasts David Scott, Robert Blanche, Duncan McPherson, John Murdoch, Bill Hutchison and Rob Molloy.

The mile rate 2-01.7. Yabby Dam Farm's Pat Driscoll would have been delighted with the performance. Dreamcatcher Swe has sired several unraced youngsters at the farm.

■ The stable scored a double after 4Y0 Wishing Stone-Olesya entire Goodman (Darby McGuigan) came from the tail of the field to mow down the pacemaker Fear The Yankee and win by head in the Max Bakery & Café Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres. Tam Oshanter ran on late from the rear to be third 12 metres back. The mile rate 2-00.4.

■ Long time Rockbank breeder/owner/trainer Ian Caruana was in the winners stall following the victory of Skyvalley-My Spanish Angel filly Daring Angel which landed the 2150 metre Bush's Produce 3Y0 Trotters Mobile. Driven by John Caldow, Daring Angel began swiftly to lead from gate five before electing to take a trail on Hopeful Beauty another Yabby Dam runner which circled the field from the extreme draw to take over.

When the leader shifted ground at the winning post with a lap to travel, Daring Angel dashed through to lead for the rest of the journey to score by a half head from Hammers Pegasus (one/one) and Whos Countin (three back the markers) which finished 4.7 metres from the runner up. The mile rate 2-00.2.

■ Havelock's Derrick and Nola Kraftt provided a shock winner of the Pryde's Easifeeds Pace over 2150 metres with 9Y0 Elsu-Tapestry gelding Our Pontiac, paying tote odds of $72.00.

Eased from gate four on the second line to settle last on the markers, Our Pontiac driven by Derrick gained inside runs everywhere to be on the back of the leader Causing Strife approaching the home turn.

Extricated four wide on straightening, Our Pontiac a winner of 10 races prior, charged down the outside of the track to prevail by 2.2 metres in 1-57.5 from Cracked Pepper which trailed the weakening pilot. Pearls For Tash was third 2.3 metres back after racing parked from the bell.

■ The first of two double day meetings for the week was held at Melton during the day and Echuca at night.

At Melton, Marong part-owner/trainer Shaun McNaulty provided an upset result to the DNR Logistics Claiming Pace over 2240 metres when former Queenslander Guptas Cullen a 8Y0 daughter of Gotta Go Cullen and Itsa Trick driven

Leading out from the pole in the four horse field, Guptas Cullen was eased after a short time when pressured by the long odds-on favourite Elroy Jetson ($1.10) when it was clear that Chris Alford wanted the lead.

■ Teenage Dunnstown reinsman Brent Murphy brought up two wins in succession aboard 9Y0 Courage Under Fire-Sealed With A Kiss gelding Image Of Courage trained by father David in the Melton Toyota Pace over 2240 metres.

Settling at the tail of the field from gate three on the second line, Image Of Courge was set alight racing for the bell to lead for the final circuit after the pacemaker Polonis Our Mate galloped at the post, accounting for Megiddo (one/one last lap - three wide home turn) by 4.7 metres, with Sir Fortune third 1.3 metres after following the runner up home. The mile rate 159.7.

■ Brent repeated the dose in the 2200 metre Nutrien Ready To Run Sale November 20-22 Pace aboard the Anthony Butt trained beautifully bred Bettors Delight-Tailamade Lombo 4Y0 gelding Colossal Stride.

Trapped three wide from gate six, Colossal Stride went forward to park outside the leader First And Erst before taking a narrow margin at the straight entrance.

Holding a margin to the wire, Colossal Stride lasted by a half head in 1-59.1 from Hit The Sky (four wide off a three wide trail last lap). Image Of Starzzz ran home late from mid-field after being held up approaching the home turn for third3 metres back.

■ Four year old Live Or Die-Make It Brief mare Im Short And Sweet trained at Lara by Amanda Grieve landed the Woodlands Stud Pace over 1720 metres with Chris Alford in the sulky.

Gaining a lovely three wide trail home from the rear in the final circuit on the back of Bettor My Dream ahead of him, Im Short And Sweet finished strongly to record a 1.8 metre margin in advance of Bettor My Dream in 1-55.2. Mended (three back the markers) ran his usual honest race for third 10.9 metres away.

■ At Echuca, 4Y0 Shadow Play-Roses For Tash mare Pearls For Tash backing up from a third at Bendigo the night before, blitzed her rivals in the 2160 metre O'Briens Electrical Echuca Moama Pace.

Trained at Bagshot by Mary Jane Mifsud.

Pearls For Tash once again driven by Daniel Jack led from gate two, but was crossed by Jedda Shannon shortly after, before a retake to take control. Giving her rivals the slip prior to the home turn, Pearls For Tash reached the wire 10 metres ahead of Fowsands (one/one), with Missmetro third 2.4 metres away after following the pair. The mile rate 1-59.7.

■ Local trainer Wayne Lear snared an entertaining Jodale Cleaning Echuca Trotters Handicap over 2130 metres with 6Y0 Skyvalley-Aldebaran Revenue mare Aldebaran Poppy in a rate of 2-07.7.

Driven by Greg Sugars, Aldebaran Poppy first up since July settled four back along the markers from 10 metres for Greg Sugars as Excellent Drop went forward from the same mark to lead.

Coming away from the inside racing for the bell to be one/one on the back of Levina ahead of him. Aldebaran Poppy was slightly held up as Aldebaran Jaytee went four wide in the last lap, with Levina shifting wide as the leader hung out.

Joining the leader on turning, Aldebaran Poppy did best to register a neck victory over Aldebaran Jaytee, with Excellent Drop 1.2 metres back in third place.

■ Shepparton based Amanda Turnbull enjoyed a fabulous night at Echuca proving four winners, three of them driven by herself, those being Treasure Rainbow - the A & R Water Solutions 2Y0 Pace, Viva Las Vegas (Moama Bowling Club Pace) and Vigoroso (Super Clean Linen Pace) while cousin Abbey Turnbull was successful aboard Sabruer in the Rich River Auto Body Pace after taking a concession.

Driven by Ryan Duffy, Scruffy Doolan, a 4Y0 Majestic Son-African Magic gelding began swiftly as the tapes released to spend most of the race one/one as solo front marker Celtic Rose led.

Angling three wide in the last lap, Scruffy Doolan put paid to his rivals in a couple of bounds to lead into the straight and score by 3.4 metres in 2-02.5 from No Biggie (three back the markers), with a death-seating Benji Hall a head away in third place.

■ Portland's Emily Hinch (Wombwell) was responsible for a training feat when 7Y0 Changeover-My Bagatelle Lombo gelding El Banco landed the Flying Horse Bistro Maiden Pace over 1710 metres when making his first race appearance since August 2019.

Eased three wide

■ At Stawell on Friday, Moonlight trainer Joanne Franklin was successful with Imperial Count-Catcha Muscle gelding Glengarriff in the Sign Online 3Y0 Trotters Handicap over 2180 metres.

Driven by Jackie Barker, Glengarriff stepped cleanly from outside the front line to enjoy a sweet passage trailing the leader Caledonian Spirit.

When the hot favourite Jazspur after a break shortly after the start losing valuable ground circled to race exposed at the bell and applied pressure to the leader on the final bend, Glengarriff was eased three wide and finishing strongly to gain the day by 5.3 metres in a rate of 2-06.6. Caledonian Spirit held third 11.6 metres away.
