A State Government spokeswoman said people in the six local government areas needed to be “particularly vigilant”.

● Anthony Carbines, Ivanhoe MLA ■ Ivanhoe MLA Anthony Carbines last week asked a question in State Parliament about community hospital progress in Nillumbik and Banyule.

“It relates to the community hospital which the member for Eltham is doing a lot of lead work on in our broader community, outside of our electorates of course but across the Banyule and Nillumbik areas,” Mr Carbines said.

“Some of the information that I seek from the minister is the start date for construction in relation to the community hospital commitments that we have made in our broader Nillumbik and Banyule community.

“In particular, given the very significant work at Austin Health, at Warringal Hospital, at Mercy Hospital for Women, at the Heidelberg Repat and across the Banyule Community Health Service, there have been very significant contributions from our local community and our health providers.

“The community hospital in our broader region will continue to add to the stellar health services in our community, and I look forward to that information from the minister,” Mr Carbines said.

June MacKenzie ■ In last week’s Local Paper there was an item about former Thomastown resident June Mackenzie celebrating her 96th birthday.

Her daughter Fiona Mackenzie wrote: “Mum taught kindergarten in Thomastown for 10 years - established 4-year-old kinder with 35 students in the class, where they learned nursery rhymes and songs, had playtime, were read stories and went on excursions to Puffing Billy.

“Mum used the volunteers ‘off’ as the mums loved being there. There might be some people still in Thomastown who remember.”

The Australia Light Foundation received a large number oif payments, with $700,000 in grants between 2015 and 2019 from Mr Scott’s department, The Age claimed.

Talks about Treaty ■ Northcote MLA Kat Theophanous has asked the Minister forAboriginal Affairs to join in meeting with key Aboriginal organisations residing within the electorate of Northcote.

Ms Theophanous says the meeting would discuss the Government’s work towards treaty and its work to overcome the systemic and cultural barriers that continue to impact Aboriginal Victorians.

“I spoke recently with Esme Bamblettof the Aborigines Advancement League in Thornbury, which has long fought for racial justice and a better life for future generations of Aboriginal people,” Ms Theophanous said.

“We reflected on the global and local events that have led to the latest groundswell of change, and we spoke about the many people who have asked what they can do to lend their support to this movement and how we can collectively do better.

“Esme reminded me of the words of Tom Calma, a former Aboriginal social justice commissioner, who stated: “Indigenous peoples are not merely ‘disadvantaged citizens’. The poverty and inequality that they experience is a contemporary reflection of their historical treatment as peoples.

“The inequality in health status that they continue to experience can be linked to systemic discrimination.

“She also reminded me of the mural on St Georges Rd, an Aboriginal face looking to the future with hope.

“Above his head the justice scales are drawn.

“They hang with the question ‘Just this’ at one end or ‘Justice’ at the other.

“Minister, there have been 432 deaths in custody since the 1991 Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

“Aboriginal people are still disproportionately represented in the justice system, rates of unemployment, children in out-of-home care, chronic health conditions and life expectancy.

“Now more than ever I believe it is incumbent on all of us to reflect on our own understandings of race and privilege in modern Australia.

■ Cr Susan Rennie this month addressed Darebin Council: “About a month ago, I reaffirmed Darebin’s absolute commitment to our diverse community and stand side by side with them to call out any form of racism or discrimination and that we will not tolerate any form of racism and will speak out loudly and strongly when it occurs.

“The tragic murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis has again shown the deadly consequences of racism – an issue which we as a country continue to confront.

“Racism and bigotry harms people - it results in the national disgrace of the increasing and unacceptable over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in prisons: • Aboriginal men are overrepresented 16 times and Aboriginal women 22 times overrepresented compared to non-Indigenous men and women in prison • Aboriginal children as young as 10 years are in youth detention • At least, 432 people have died in custody since the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991.

“We have an unwavering commitment to a racism-free Darebin and proudly walk alongside First Nations peoples – Black Lives Matter - we see you and we stand with you in strength and solidarity,” Cr Rennie said.

Austin acknowledged

■ Teams at the Austin and other hospitals have been praised in State Parliament by Anthony Carbines, MLA for Ivanhoe. The praise centres around their work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The team across my electorate at the Austin Hospital are led by Dr Max Alexander, our interim CEO who has just stepped aside from his role of course filling in, and Adam Horsburgh, who has started just this week as the new CEO at Austin Health,” Mr Carbines said.

“Max and his team at the Austin, the Mercy Heidelberg, Warringal Private Hospital and Banyule Community Health Service, these are really big and significant health services in my electorate.

“They have worked as a team across the public and private sectors, picking up on the work that has happened in the national cabinet arrangements around the extra heavy lifting that we have needed private hospitals to do. “ I have seen the system in which people have worked collaboratively up close in my electorate at the Austin and at Warringal Private Hospital.

“To the team there, to Austin Wills at Warringal Private Hospital and his staff, I want to thank them for the ongoing, continued work they do hand in glove with the public system to make sure that we have the capacity that we need across the system to support Victorians,” Mr Carbines said.

■ Darebin Mayor Cr Susan Rennie welcomed Erica Higgins, a Member of the Darebin Aboriginal Advisory Committee to the Council lectern to make a collective statement.

“We, the members of the Darebin Aboriginal Advisory Committee, call for change across this country. We call for national accord and personal acceptance of the fact that black lives matter.

“For all our people, our lives, families, lands, waters, culture, lore, history and identity as First Nations people have always mattered.

“We believe that there is no better time than now for all Australians to join with us in the struggle to bring to an end the centuries-long racism and social inequity that has been forced upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Is-

lander people of this country. We call upon all Australian governments – federal, state, territory and local - to do more. We call upon Australian businesses - corporate, private, large and small – to do more.

“We call upon all to join in, with a sense of urgency and determination, the fight against injustice, racism, inequity and discrimination.

■ The State Emergency Services has developed flood guides for the Shire of Nillumbik and City of Banyule.

Flooding of the Diamond Creek, Plenty River, Salt Creek, Wilsons Creek, and Yarra River have historically caused issues for communities along these water courses in the Banyule and Nillumbik Council areas.

School infection

■ St Monica’s College, Epping, was closed on Monday (June 22) after it was confirmed that a staff member tested positive for the Coronavirus.

The shutdown is ahead of the start of school holidays this weekend. Principal Brian Hanley write to parents at the weekend to say that a full risk assessment would take place.

“This includes identifying and notifying any person who has been in recent contact with the affected staff member who has tested positive for COVID-19,” Mr Hanley said.

“Affected students, their families and college staff will be notified by the DHHS over the next 24 hours and supported to ensure they understand what actions to take.”

Wood heaters are creating ‘unbearable pollution’ in the Reservoir neighbourhood, says resident Steve Minos. “Breathing is difficult when out for a walk. Will council consider banning the health-destroying air- polluting wood fires?

Mr Minos askede Darebin Council: “Even though there's many recommendations of how to burn dry wood, most people do not follow this and burn building materials or anything else they can get their hands on. I think the time has come with global warming etc. Ban the wood heaters. There's better alternatives,” Mr Minos said.

● Tyson Forsaith Police are appealing for public as sistance to help locate Tyson Forsaith. The 31-year-old is wanted on warrant for failing to appear at court for theft related offences. He is known to frequent the Abbotsford and Melbourne CBD areas but police believe he may have travelled to New South Wales.

Eltham Leisure Centre was due to reopen to gym users and provide further increased access to pools from Monday morning (June 22). It is not known if revised regulations affect this.

Ivanhoe MLA Anthony Carbines has spoken in State Parliament about work that Banyule council has done with traders and shopping strips in thecommunity. “For those of us who have the capacity to support our local businesses, to order takeaway or to get meals delivered to home, that is a nice thing to do, but the sad reality is there are many families that just cannot afford to show support in that way; they just cannot afford to do it at this time. We need to make sure that we continue to redouble our efforts in providing the necessary supports to those families,” Mr Carbines said.

Mr Carbines also had good words for Northland traders and staff. “I want to touch on the team out at Northland. All roads lead to Northland in the northern suburbs. The teams out there doing the health checks have been fantastic, and the support that they have received from the local community is also critical. Our supermarket workers, we know they have also been on the front line and experienced everything that human behaviour can throw at them. But I have seen the best of it I think. I want to place on the record my sincere thanks and regard to all those casual and part-time and full-time workers in our shopping centres and in supermarkets who have also contributed and, under pressure, done it with a smile on their faces.”

Local member resigns in Somyurek scandal ■ Preston MLA Robin Scott last week resigned from his position as Assistant State Treasurer, following the 60 Minutes coverage of his Parliamentary colleague Adem Somyurek.

Mr Scott is a factional ally of Mr Somyurek, who was sacked by Premier Daniel Andrews.

Channel 9 aired allegations that Mr Somyurek had been involved in branch stacking. Mr Somyurek has denied the allegations.

Mr Somyurek also resigned his Labor Party membership after MrAndrews and federal Labor leader Anthony Albanese moved to expel him from the party.

Mr Andrews said both Mr Scott and a second Minister, Marlene Kairouz, who was also mentioned in the TVreports, had assured him they acted appropriately "at all times".

Mr Andrews said the matter had been referred to Victoria Police and the Independent Broad-based Anti-corruption Commission.

In a statement, Mr Scott said he found the reporting of the matter "especially confronting".

“The Australian Labor Party has played an enormous part in my life, and champions values that I hold particularly dear.

“To the extent that these matters relate to my conduct, I look forward to the opportunity to clear my name,” Mr Scott said. “I will continue to serve my electorate of Preston to the best of my ability.”

Noise pollution

■ Northcote resident Julie More has asked Darebin Council to ban the use of leaf blowers.

“I would like the Council to consider banning the use of leaf blowers at residential housing,” Ms More told the June 9 meeting.

“Perhaps there might be some exception made for residential houses on land greater that 1000 square metres. We have regular users when one can’t help feel a broom would do the trick. The fact that has been quiet serves to highlight the return of noise pollution.”

Aggravated burglary in Collingwood

■ Stage 1 of the Darebin Creek Trail upgrade project at West Heidelberg re-opened last Friday afternoon (June 19).

The project improves the current pavement conditions, and makes walking and riding a pleasurable experience. Some sections of the trail are being realigned to improve safety, sight lines and reduce blind corners.

While some trail sections are closed for upgrade, an extensive array of detour and trail closed signage helps guide members of the public safely around the project area, says a Banyule Council spokesman.

Diamond Valley News Witnesses wanted ■ Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses following a collision in Greensborough on June 16.

Investigators have been told a pedestrian was crossing Vermont Pde at a T-intersection when he was struck by a Ford Ranger making a right-hand turn from Henry St about 6.30pm. The 44-year-old Greensborough man was taken to hospital in a critical condition but has died in hospital. The driver of the the Ford, a 39-year-old Greensborough man, stopped to assist at the scene.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed or who may have dash cam footage to come forward.

Deer, oh deer: MP ■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish spoke last Thursday (June 18) about deer problems.

Ms McLeish addressed a question to Jaclyn Symes, Minister for Agriculture.

“There has been an explosion of deer across the state in recent years, and we have seen very little action from the Andrews Labor Government to tackle the matter,” Ms McLeish said.

“The deadline for the deer management strategy release date has come and gone and is now embarrassingly overdue.

“There are now huge numbers of deer on Melbourne’s fringe.

“Recent sightings at Sugarloaf are alarming for residents of the Nillumbik shire as the deer are causing substantial damage to property and produce in the area.

“The sightings are of enormous numbers of deer that are there.

It is really quite staggering.

“Residents of the Upper Yarra have been advised that there will be a deer cull at nearby Haining Farm.

“Will the minister placate angry and frustrated residents of the Nillumbik shire and arrange for a cull of deer at Sugarloaf?”

■ Bronwyn Halfpenny, MLA for Thomastown, spoke in State Parliament about an Order of Australia award that went to a West Lalorcommunity worker.

“Congratulations to Andrew MacNeill and theWest Lalor Tennis Club. Andrew recently received a Medal of the Order of Australia for his outstanding service to tennis, as president of the West Lalor Tennis Club, as well as his contribution to accountancy,” Ms Halfpenny said.

“Andrew started at the West Lalor Tennis Club in 2013 on the committee there, and he became president in 2015.

“Over his relatively short time in the leadership position as president at the club, the club has gone from strength to strength. Last year it won Tennis Victoria’s most outstanding tennis club of the year award for its volunteerism.

“Tennis Victoria has also awarded the club the most outstanding coach of the year award. We know that in the community it is a very well regarded club, not just because of the outstanding tennis that is played there and the coaching but also for what it gives back to the community.

“They have always been involved in This Girl Can and other programs to ensure that women and young girls who are not normally as active are participating. Congratulations to all,” Ms Halfpenny said.

$10,000 grants

■ The Business Victoria $10,000 grants, now closed, have been an important boost to local firms, according to Kat Theophanous, MLA for Northcote.

“On a typical afternoon local businesses along High St in my electorate are buzzing.

They run through Westgarth Village, Ruckers Hill, Northcote, Thornburyand into Preston South,” said Ms Theophanous.

“So too the retail precincts in Fairfield Village, those up at Miller and Gilbert streets and so many others dotted around our community, but the days have not been typical and so many of these traders are still struggling to get back on their feet.

“Last week I had the opportunity to speak with Benita Bunting, who is president of the Northcote Business Association and runs Brown and Bunting booksellers on High St. “We spoke about the diversity and uniqueness of our local traders in Northcote, the ethical and cultural depth they bring to our area and how in a lot of cases they are women sole trading with goods they are making with their own hands.

“This eclectic diversity is what makes our area so special, and yet it is also what makes these businesses vulnerable to the economic impacts we are facing.

“The $10,000 Business Support Fund grants have been helpful, and I am pleased that so many of my local businesses have accessed them.

“I have been on a mission to make sure that every business in my electorate that could access the fund has accessed the fund.

“JobKeeper has been good but it could have been much better, and I have spoken about that before.

“Perhaps the toughest nut to crack has been in the arrangement between many businesses and their landlords.

“These are always complex matters, and there is no quick fix for a landscape that has largely shifted from businesses owning their shopfronts to renting their shopfronts. Government has asked a lot of the community, and I am proud of the way my community has responded,” Ms Theophanous said.

Criminal activity in Darebin ■ Illegal activity is taking place in the Darebin municipality, resident Andy Roberts told Councillors this month.

“As a concerned tenant ... I would like to ask when the council will implement its AirBnB policy, similar to the Mornington Peninsula Council, that will prevent illegal criminal activity from blighting the lives of law abiding residents in this community?” Mr Roberts said.

“It was referenced by Christine Schmidt in the council notes of September 2018 and needs your urgent attention please.

“Please be advised that there will be three victim impact statements presented to the council on June 9 with regards to recent events at this address,” Mr Roberts told the June 9 meeting.

Mayor Cr Susan Rennie said that she understood that the property was an apartment building, which meanst that the owners’ corporation has the power to issue breach notices.

“The State Government made changes to the Owners Corporations Act 2006 in February 2019 to help prevent short-term accommodation apartment buildings being used to host unruly parties.

“These reforms allow owners corporations and residents to take action against owners and guests. Owners and guests are now jointly and individually liable for any compensation, fines, and awards for damage to common property.

“Council is unable to legally enact a local law addressing this issue because State legislation is in place and it overrides any local law.”

■ Nazih Elasmar, Northern Metropolitan Region MLC, was elected as President of the Legislative Council of State Parliament on Thursday (June 18). He replaces Shaun Leane of Eastern Metropolitan Region.

Mernda philanthropic gesture: it’s a Wynne, Wynne situation ■ State Planning Minister Richard Wynne spoke last week in State Parliament about a proposed development at Mernda.

“Let me just take you briefly to Whittlesea City Council planning scheme amendment C203,” Mr Wynne told the Legislative Assembly.

“The subject site is located at 280 Bridge Inn Rd, Mernda, and straddles the urban growth boundary.

“The amendment seeks to subdivide the land for a vineyard, winery and function centre, as well as a portion of residential development inside— and I emphasise inside—the urban growth boundary, and to gift a parcel of land to the Quarry Hills regional parkland.

“The site is 109 hectares and currently contains a homestead.

“The 15 hectares of land zoned farming land to be rezoned general residential zone 1 with a development plan and vegetation protection overlay, as I indicated, is within the urban growth boundary and directly adjacent to residential areas.

“Sixty-four point one hectares of land will be transferred to the council for the purpose of adding to the wider Quarry Hills regional parkland, a fantastic addition to the area, and the remaining 30 hectares, which sits outside the UGB, will be used for the vineyard, winery and function centre.

● Richard Wynne “The extension of the park is supported by local planning policy but specifically the Whittlesea Green Wedge Management Plan of 2017, which is quite a contemporary document, which I know the local member my colleague has provided extensive input to.

“The Whittlesea Green Wedge Management Plan, as we know, seeks to protect and facilitate the continuation of agricultural uses on the urban periphery.

“As such, the use of the land for a vineyard, winery and function centre is regarded as consistent with the ambitions of the council in relation to that green wedge management.

“The landowner of course could seek to develop the land within the urban growth zone through a regular permit process, as could the landowner seek a permit through the coun-

cil to develop and use the land as a vineyard, winery and function centre.

“However, to gift the large parcel of land means the landowner no longer meets the requirements for subdivision in the green wedge policy.

“I mean, this is actually a very significant—I guess one could characterise it almost as a philanthropic gesture by the landowner.

“It is the council’s view that the gifting of parkland results in a significant net community benefit, and the proposal is otherwise consistent, as I indicated at the outset, with state and local policy “The amendment does not—I repeat, does not—open up the potential for further development or urban development, and any expansion or changes to the proposal would be required to come back for ratification through the normal process of both houses of the Parliament.

“The amendment does not break any election commitment around the green wedge as the residential component sits within the urban growth boundary.

“The size of overall land and transfer of land to council for parkland sets this proposal apart from other requests in the green wedge and provides what I would regard as a very, very significant net community benefit to the good folk of the northern suburbs of Melbourne,” Mr Wynne said.

“It was a big time, early June, and of course on May 30, David celebrated his 87th birthday.

“As a former MHR for DiamondValley— more familiar to people in this place as the seat of Jagajaga in our Federal Parliament— in those turbulent, exciting and reforming days of the Whitlam government he was our local MP from 1972 to 1975 and set the gold standard for representation that we have seen maintained by his successors, Peter Staples and Jenny Macklin.

“Can I say also that in his work as a life member now after 25 years service as a board member at the Banyule Community Health Service, with campuses in West Heidelberg and in Greensborough, his work there has been exceptional, and we have seen of course that service recognised by the Premier in the healthcare awards.

“He has also worked as a former Shire President at Diamond Valley and given many years service as a councillor there, now well known to us across the Banyule and Nillumbik area.

“That work has been most significant, and I congratulate him for being recognised for a lifetime of community service and also for his wise counsel to me and support for me in the work that we continue to do together in our community, and to his wife, Barbara, congratulations,” Mr Carbines said.

‘What leverage?’

■ Kat Theophanous, MLA for Northcote, last week asked a question of the Minister for Community Sport, and it related to local sports infrastructure.

“The Premier has announced an unprecedented infrastructure program to kickstart the Victorian economy and get Victorians back to work.

“What opportunities are there for local sports clubs in my community to leverage state government funding in order to benefit from our infrastructure program?

“Minister, for many in my community one thing that has been made clear, if it was not already, is just how important local sports clubs and competitions are to them.

“Our sporting clubs are so much more than a place where we play sport. They are our community.

“In order to do what is needed to stop the spread of coronavirus we asked them not to take part in their local sports events. It was tough but it was the right thing to do.

“Now that we are in a new phase our clubs can slowly return to competition, and as they do I want to make sure that as many clubs in my community as possible get the benefit of Victoria’s Big Build,” Ms Theophanous said.

■ Improvements are needed at the J.C. Donath Reserve in Reservoir, near Keon Park, Darebin Council was told this month.

Jason McCall on Thornbury said: “The rooms at Donath Reserve West are in desperate need of an overhaul similar to Preston Bullants new rooms. With the added participation of both men and women's sports likely to increase significantly from 2021 what process has the council got in place to house these participants in the existing infrastructure available?”

Mayor Cr Susan Rennie’s reply spoke of works in the past, and said that Donath Reserve works were not a high priority for the Council.

This week that statistic remains unchanged. There have been no new cases.

One month ago, in Mansfield Shire, there had been three COVID cases. That stat-istic remains unchanged.

One month ago, in Strath-bogie Shire, there had been two COVID cases. That stat-istic remains unchanged.

One month ago, in Mitchell Shire, there had nine COVID cases. That figure has increased by one, to 10.

One moth ago, across Yarra Ranges Shire, there had been 24 COVID cases. That figure has increased by one, to 25.

It is in the metropolitan and periurban municpalities that there is a different story.

In the City of Whittlesea, the statistic one month ago was 30. It is now up to 36.

In the NIllumbik Shire, it was 24.

Now up to 26.

In the City of Manningham, it was 28, now up to 33.

Nearby, the City of Darebin figures were 40, they are now 47.

The ‘cot case’ Banyule municipality was 91. It is now 95.

The Department of Health and Human Services figures released at the weekend show that it is in places like the City of Melbourne where the real COVID-19 problems lie.

The central city municipality had 94 cases one month ago. That statistic has jumped alarmingly to 133.

There are 23 active cases.

Let’s look to where the most active cases are at the moment: Melbourne (23), Brimbank (9), Hume (8), Casey (7), Cardinia (6), Moreland (5), Darebin (4), Manningham (3), and Whittlesea (2).

There are no current cases in Mansfield, Mitchell, Murrindindi, Strathbogie and Yarra Ranges.

Premier Dan Andrews wants people in these rural areas to work at home, because of a fear that COVID-19 will be spread on trains and trams.

There are no local trains and trams across rural municipalities.

City problems are wrongly becoming country problems.

Country areas of Victoria are needlessly in lockdown because of problems in the city.

■ Community hopes of a reprieve from the restrictions of the past three months were dashed this week as Premier Dan Andrews announced a last-minute change of arrangements.

“From the outset, we have always listened to our medical experts. And they’re telling us we’ve come to a critical crossroads,” Mr Andrews said on Saturday.

“Today, our case numbers have hit the highest they’ve been in more than two months.

I know that’s not what people want to hear – but sadly, that is our reality.

“The experts tell us that, largely, the numbers are being driven by families – families having big get-togethers and not following the advice around distancing and hygiene.

“In fact, around half of our cases since the end of April have come from transmission inside someone’s home.

“You can see how this could happen. People feeling relaxed at home. Letting their guard down. Letting old habits creep back. But we are still in a pandemic – and people’s lives are still at risk.

“It’s why today, we’re announcing a number of changes.

“From 11.59pm on Sunday, the number of visitors you can have at your home will reduce to five. Outside the home, families and friends can meet in groups up to 10.

“As we’ve seen across the world, this virus has the ability to turn a few cases into hundreds in a matter of days.

“That’s why we also need to delay an increase to gathering limits in businesses and community facilities.

“That means restaurants, pubs, auction halls, community halls, libraries, museums and places of worship – will all stay at a maximum of 20 people in any one space until July 12.

Businesses that were set to open on Monday like gyms, cinemas, theatres and TABs can do so – but again, only with a maximum of 20.

“Community sport for kids and non-contact competition for adults can proceed as planned. Ski season and accommodation facilities with communal spaces will also open, but with increased screening and safeguards in place.

“I know this is not where we wanted to be. And that Victorians will feel disappointed and frustrated. I’m frustrated too.

But we have to channel that frustration into action.

“We can’t let this thing get away from us. We must act – while we can.

“That means staying safe while out in the community – but just as importantly, staying safe at home. And that means only seeing those you need to – if you need to. Not your third cousin. Not your third best friend from primary school.

State of Emergency extends until July 19 ■ The State of Emergency in Victoria will be extended for another four weeks to continue the measures designed to slow the spread of Coronavirus.

The State of Emergencywill be extended until 11.59pm on July 19, which allows the Victorian Government to continue to enforce physical distancing and isolation requirements, as well as other directions from the Chief Health Officer.

The substantial increase in the number of household contacts spreading the virus amongst extended family groups shows the battle against coronavirus is far from over.

“As we’ve seen across the world, this virus can turn a few cases into hundreds in a matter of days,” said Jenny Mikakos, Health Minister.

“Our message is clear: stay safe. If you do need to see people keep your distance. No handshakes and no hugs. Maintain good hygiene. Don’t share food or drinks. Avoid crowds.

Epping v T’town

■ When teams representing neighbouring towns meet it is only to be expected that there will be a great deal of excitement and " big" talk. For weeks past the meeting of the above teams has been the main topic of conversation between football supporters of this side of the Association.

Tales of big wagers (mythical for the most part) on the ultimate result were carried from one township to the other, and every "fair " in the district was worked up to imagine that this was to be the meeting of giants.

Thomastown players and supporters were reported to be particularly sanguine that their team would easily account for last year's premiers, and on the other hand, the Epping folk considered that it was to be the easiest victory of the year; so it was quite expected that a good crowd would be present to cheer their favourites on.

■ Arts Centre Melbourne announces the recipients of the 5x5x5: Memory; a mentorship program developed to support aspiring young composers across Victoria.

Ceridwen McCooey, Mabel WindredWornes, Samuel Kreusler, Sue-Anne Tan and Theo Carbo have been selected to showcase their work under the direction of Artistic Mentor Kate Neal.

The final works will be professionally recorded in their home studios and Arts Centre Melbourne alongside The Channel will release the content through their new digital channel Together With You in July, 2020.

“There was a huge response to this year’s 5x5x5. There are simply so many outstanding and thoughtful young artists in our community - covering a diversity of style, genre, craft, and hailing from contrasting musical backgrounds, It is inspiring to see so many different approaches to sound, craft and content,” said Kate Neal, Artistic Director for 5x5x5.

Each composer will now receive a $1250 commission and work with Neal, who will meet with the recipients (online) to guide them with the process.

The latest edition of the 5x5x5 project provides another powerful development pathway for young creatives in Victoria.

“This is an incredibly important program in fostering young sound makers in our community.”

Participants' compositions will be published online from July 20.

Cookin' on 3 Burners ■ Arts Centre Melbourne introduces Fridays at the Playhouse Lounge as part of their reopening program.

The first three Fridays in July will see the new series open with Australia's Hammond organ trio, Cookin' On 3 Burners on Friday, July 3, 10, 17.

The three-week Friday night residency will see the band (Jake Mason, Ivan Khatchoyan and Dan West) in the intimate settings of the Playhouse, Lounge for a night of organ, guitar and drums.

The shows will be full of funky vibes and fiery interplay from the trio as they break free from isolation measures.

Special guests from the extended Cookin' On 3 Burners family - Stella Angelico, Raleigh Williams and Thando, will also be dropping by each week.

Formed in 1997, Cookin' on 3 Burners was meant to be an experiment in sound.

In Croc Country, Kerry wants to take us urban souls to the wild beauty of the country she knows so well, as many of us have never seen the Gulf country she loves.

Kerry also wants to show us what life in Nature's lockdown is like - otherwise known as the Wet Season.

"In the current COVID crisis one hears so much about the boredom, the difficulties, the hardships city people have experienced in Lockdown,” Kerry explained.

“Yet they receive mail and regular groceries, they have the Internet and can wave at their neighbours and pass them at the appropriate distance in the street. “ During the Wet Season my characters at Binboona would see nobody, receive no mail, have spotty radio communications and no sight of another human being for three months or more, and consider it normal."

Living under these conditions, it's no surprise that the women Kerry writes about are strong women in the rural workforce.

Croc Country arose from various experiences in Kerry's past, including a real-life tragedy that is similar to one faced by her protagonist, Tilly.

Coriolanus

■ Not often performed, the plot of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus is convoluted. The general, Caius Marcius (Tom Hiddleston) is contemptuous of the plebeians of Rome for rioting. He finds them undeserving of the grain they want as the populace hadn’t fought to save Rome in the recent battles with the Tarquin kings.

The impending threat posed by the Volscian army then propels Marcius to glory as he defeats their leader, Aufidius (Hadley Fraser) and is greeted as Coriolanus – or conqueror. Capitalising on his new found reputation Coriolanus enters politics only to find he cannot live up to the expectations of the people or political opponents who want to bring him down. Sent into exile and humiliated, he defects to the Volscian army and leads them against Rome. A change of heart occurs when his mother, Volumina (Deborah Findlay), appeals to his honour which will be forever tarnished by his betrayal. Coriolanus concedes and is slain by Aufidius.

At two hours and 40 minutes in length, this YouTube streaming of the National Theatre’s production first performed in 2014 is not for the faint hearted. It is, however, more than just a record of one of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays, it is a testament to the theatrical arts and the performance skills by actors that make theatre come alive. - David McLean

Cabaret re-opening ■ Arts Centre Melbourne has begun turning off its ghost lights to welcome back visitors from Saturday June 27, with music and cabaret on the Playhouse stage, a light and sound installation at Hamer Hall and fun activations for families on the Forecourt.

The program is the first part of a staged reopening following the Victorian Government’s gradual easing of coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions.

Beginning Saturday June 27, for several weeks, Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse stage will be transformed into the Playhouse Lounge, a salon-style performance venue where audiences sit on stage to enjoy local music, comedy, cabaret, burlesque and contemporary performance while enjoying a bespoke menu of food and beverages designed to suit the event.

The season will support more than 70 independent local artists as they entertain audiences.

Launching the season on June 27 will be Ali McGregor's Late-Nite-Variety-Nite Night, every Saturday night at 6.30pm and 9pm, featuring comedy acts, saucy burlesque, and cabaret from Melbourne’s finest acts hand-picked by McGregor. This variety show is a night of quality entertainment and was one of the first shows to be cancelled as part of the closure in March.

National Playwright Competition

■ Entries are now open for the 19th annual National Playwright Competition. This year's entry closing date has been extended to July 31 due to the pandemic.

Finalist plays will be chosen for cash awards and for four premiere performances of the work.

The National Playwright Competition is presented by Playhouse Players Inc., who will appoint directors and call for cast in early October for rehearsals.

Performances of the three finalist plays will be presented from December 3 - 5 at the Rentoul Theatre, 16 Livingston Street, Burwood.

Observations Ghost lights still on

■ Arts Centre Melbourne has postponed welcoming visitors back to its venues following the recent changes to public health restrictions in Victoria. The ghost lights will stay on a little longer with scheduled reopening performances and events on hold.

Arts Centre Melbourne’s Playhouse Lounge series, Ghostly Machines experience in Hamer Hall and family activations on the Forecourt will be postponed with further information to be provided soon.

The Theatres Building, including the Australian Music Vault, will not open on June 27 and the reopening of outdoor cafe Protagonist has also been postponed.

Ticket holders booked to attend a performance will be contacted by email when a new date is confirmed. Taking place on Saturday June 27 from 10am – 1pm, kindergarten and primary school-aged children can take part in the MSO’s activity-filled Kids Marathon featuring interactive music-making and stories from different countries and cultures across time.

The Kids Marathon begins with a musical acknowledgment of country, recognising Australia’s first people reaching back over 40 thousand years and then ends with a look at Holst’s journey into the universe with The Planets.

The event will feature conducting workshops, drawing to music sessions, instrument making as well as musical interludes and short interactive concerts, alongside popular MSO programs Jams for Juniors and Classic Kids.

Harvard discovers Vitamin D ■ In the past decade, studies have found that taking Vitamin D can lower the odds of developing respiratory infections like the cold and the flu, especially among people who have documented deficiencies.

Now scientists are trying to find out whether Vitamin D might also help protect against COVID-19. Some scientists believe that people with Vitamin D deficiencies have weak or abnormal immune responses that make them more susceptible to developing COVID-19 and experiencing severe symptoms.

The notion that Vitamin D levels could influence the risk of COVID-19 has sparked debate among experts and prompted researchers at Harvard and other universities to start randomised trials examining whether there is a link. But so far, most of the evidence for the claim comes from observational studies that do not prove causation.

And experts are urging people to be cautious about gobbling down high doses of supplements in the hopes of obtaining benefits that may not exist.

Big Apple now Big Toilet ■ Working at a beer store on St Mark's Place, Brittany Spano, 27, has seen the Big Apple's robust social life return, albeit in an abridged form.

Drink windows selling to-go cocktails and beers have sprung up throughout the city, drawing in socially starved New Yorkers who have been in quarantine for three months. But this re-emergence has come with a stream of issues mainly a steady flow of revellers freely peeing in public since most bathrooms remain closed.

And now, with thousands of protesters taking to the streets each day, more people than ever are contributing to NYC's No. 1 problem by whizzing in the wild.

"Last night, my co-worker saw some guy just coming down the street and pulling down his pants to urinate," Spano says.

A lack of restrooms has left New Yorkers in a bind. They want to go out but then they are left holding it in. Restaurants, bars and coffee shops where New Yorkers could always find relief in the past have closed their restrooms to the public. Plus, with fears over the coronavirus still very present, many don't feel safe going into germ-infested public restrooms.

And hey, peeing in public isn't even a crime anymore. In 2017, New York City introduced the Criminal Justice Reform Act, which decriminalised low-level offenses. Deadliest city in the US ■ The city of Chicago notched a grim milestone as 18 people were murdered on Sunday, May 31 alone, marking the deadliest day in the city since at least 1961.

The University of Chicago Crime Lab's numbers do not go back further than 1961, so it's impossible to say how long it's been if ever since so many people were murdered in the city one 24hour stretch. The Chicago Sun-Times describes some of the victims: ■ A hardworking father killed just before 1am.

■ A West Side high school student murdered two hours later.

■ A man killed amid South Side looting at a cellphone store at 12:30 pm.

■ A college freshman who hoped to become a correctional officer, gunned down at 4.25pm after getting into an argument in Englewood.

In the entire weekend, 24 people were killed in Chicago.

■ President Trump's infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci on called the Coronavirus his "worst nightmare" and warned that the fight against its spread is far from over.

The bleak outlook from Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, comes as the US continues to slowly reopen from lockdown while grappling with massive protests in cities over the police killing of George Floyd.

"In a period of four months, it has devastated the whole world," Fauci said, during a virtual appearance at a conference held by Biotechnology Innovation Organization.

"And it isn't over yet." Fauci added that there is still a world of uncertainty around the virus and how it spreads and impacts the body. He said COVID-19 is much more complex than HIV, a virus he spent his career studying because of the varying levels of seriousness in infections from asymptomatic carriers to patients who develop fatal conditions.

"Oh my goodness," Fauci added. "Where is it going to end? We're still at the beginning of really understanding."

Fauci said vaccines will be the only way to stop the spread of the coronavirus, though he did express confidence that an antidote is in the works.

He expects "more than one winner in the vaccine field because we will need vaccines for the entire world, billions and billions of doses," he said.

"I'm very heartened by the fact that the industry has stepped to the plate very much differently than what we saw with SARS," Fauci said. "The industry is not stupid they figured it out. SARS had a degree of transmissibility that it burned itself out with pure public health measures. No way is that going to happen with this virus.”

■ Deanna Durbin was born 98 years ago on December 4.

Deanna is fondly remembered for the films and recordings that featured her beautiful soprano voice.

Edna Mae Durbin was born in Canada in 1921. When Edna was only one year old the family moved to California.

Her older sister Edith recognised Edna's singing gift and helped her to take singing lessons.

In 1935 Edna was signed by MGM Studios and changed her name to Deanna Durbin.

Deanna appeared in a 10-minute short film titled Every Sunday where she sang with another young hopeful named Judy Garland.

For the first time we heard Deanna's operatic voice onscreen and their duet at the end of the film is sensational. (It is on You-Tube) In 1936 Deanna signed a contract with Universal Studios. Her first film, Three Smart Girls, was a box office smash and it got the studio out of financial difficulties.

It was not a leading role but Deanna was a ‘standout’ and she received a Juvenile Academy Award.

She worked with Ray Milland and Nan Grey (the wife of Frankie Laine) in Three Smart Girls.

Whilst making films Deanna was also appearing on the Eddie Cantor Radio Show and teamed up with the young singer Bobby Breen.

She was considered for the singing voice of Snow White in the animated film but Walt Disney

By the time Deanna was 21she was the highest paid film star in the world.

Deanna received her first screen kiss from Robert Stack in the film First Love.

Generally her leading men such as Charles Laughton, Joseph Cotton and Vincent Price were much older.

Deanna Durbin represented the teenage daughter that millions of mothers and fathers wished they had.

Her recordings were in demand and most of her released songs came from her films.

Some of her popular recordings included The Turntable Song, Always, The Last Rose Of Summer, My Own and Someone to Care For Me. In 1942 Deanna went on a tour of Army camps to entertain the troops.

Her only technicolour film was Can't Help Singing was released in 1944. She was never happy with glitz and glamour of Hollywood and after making21 films Deanna retired from acting.

She was offered stage roles in Broadway shows such as Kiss Me Kate and My Fair Lady but turned them down.

In 1950 Deanna married her third husband Charles David in Paris. Charles had directed her in the film Lady On A Train.

Sadly he passed away in 1999. Deanna had two children - Jessica born in 1946 and Peter born in 1951.

His comment at a Seven in-house presentation was brilliant – “there’s only room for one nut bag at Seven”. The ‘nut bag’ Mick was referring to was Pete Evens - one time celebrity chef at Seven,who has caused the weirdest headlines over cures to COVID-19, and his extreme way of living.

■ There’s no stopping Daryl Braithwaite, not even current period of isolation. He has just released a new single Love Songs with great response to date.

Another project that Daryl penned a few years ago has come to life.

Stars: ***½ Review: A couple's first date takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over, and as a result, have no choice but to go on the run and evade the law, and when a video of the incident goes viral, the unwitting outlaws soon become a symbol of trauma, terror, grief and pain for people all across the country.

A variation of a theme in a long list of "Fugitives on the Run" films that includes "Bonnie & Clyde" (1967), "Gun Crazy" (1950), "The Getaway" (1972), "Badlands" (1973), "True Romance" (1993) and "Moonrise Kingdom" (2012), with an intensely subtle spin on '70s "Blaxploitation Cinema," as well as Steven Spielberg's "The Sugarland Express" (1974), "Thelma and Louise" and the cult classics "Vanishing Point" (1971) and "Dirty Mary Crazy Larry" (1974), an though not without its flaws, this is worthy addition to this list that is all encompassing a captivating and compelling journey.

An impressive feature directorial debut from Melina Matsoukas, the combined personal emotional relationship and bruised cultural social boundaries are inseparably intertwined with an effective cinematic style and sense of raw realism, all brought vividly to life by the startling performances by Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out/Black Panther) and most notably relative newcomer Jodie Turner-Smith, as they drive deeper into their own subconsciousness in this multidimensional cross country "Black Odyssey."

An unapologetically galvanizing "Road Movie" that drives to the very heart and soul in its own racial history, but also a simple tale of human arrogance, beliefs, the power of the media and survival of two protagonists turned folk heroes in a new form of protest art, a subversive retelling on the "Bonnie and Clyde" myth, among others, that is ultimately a well made, solid, moving, angry, poignant, lyrical and thought provoking journey, and a cross country journey that we can only hope that we never have to go on.

Stars: **** Review: Now available in a Blu-ray special edition, this wonderfully entertaining and nostalgic romp set at the birth of "Beatlemania" in the U.S. and a group of teenagers who are determined to see The Beatles in their first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show on February 9, 1964, who get more than they bargained for, is a gem!

Sharing a similarity with George Lucas' "American Graffiti," Oscar winning "Romancing The Stone" and "Back To The Future" trilogy director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis' directorial debut is a delightful and insightful look at early pop culture phenomenon mixed with the zany antics of The Three Stooges sensibility.

Pacing, period detail, humour from a sparkling screenplay by Zemeckis and partner Bob Gale and cast all excel, but it is the use of technology with the performance of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show that lifts the experience to a whole new level, making "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" a joyful journey down memory lane well worth taking. This is one of the most dramatic and dynamic screen performances of Sinatra's extraordinary career, ranking alongside other greats such as "The Manchurian Candidate," "The Man With The Golden Arm," "Von Ryan's Express," "The Devil at 4 O'Clock" and "Some Came Running," to name a few.

Rourke’s Reviews Da 5 Bloods ■ (MA). 156 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

After achieving critical and commercial success (as well as finally getting that long overdue Oscar) with the magnificent Blackkklansman, Spike Lee returns with his distinctive examination of the Vietnam conflict, filling an at-times unwieldy film with plenty of heart, anger, and historical context.

The story involves four vets (superbly played by Delroy Lindo, Clarke Peters, Norm Lewis and Isiah Whitlock Jr.) who return to Vietnam to seek out a cache of gold bars they came across during their tour of duty (a definite homage to the 1948 classic, The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre).

Accompanied by one vet's son (Jonathan Majors), who turns up unannounced, and initially helped by local guide Vinh Tran (Johnny Nguyen), the group journey into familiar terrain, and begin reminiscing about the one member of their group who didn't make it out, Norman (Chadwick Boseman).

But as the possibility of riches gets closer to becoming a reality, old frictions and wounds start to surface.

Lee is passionate from the very beginning, presenting many reallife people and incidents, showing how America used and abused an entire race who were prepared to fight for that same country (detailing cyclical brutality that dates back to 1619).

Lee also shows with conviction the generational ripple effect the war has had on the Vietnamese people.

Lee even occasionally alters the film's aspect ratio to convey various themes and points of view.

While there are familiar directorial indulgences, and some of the CGI doesn't fully convince, Da 5 Bloods is both provocative and powerful (with nicely timed moments of humour), and having an incompetent, racist President in the White House seems to have fully re-energised Lee, and that's a wonderful thing for cinema.

7500 ■ (M). 93 minutes. Now streaming on Amazon Prime.

Well-crafted and effectively compact, 7500 makes for a tense thriller, cleverly using its confined space to achieve a largely successful mix of drama and suspense.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Tobias Ellis, an American pilot living in Germany with his flight attendant partner Gokce (Aylin Tezel).

Both are working on an aeroplane that will be flying from

Berlin to Paris, with Tobias handed major responsibilities by veteran Captain Michael Lutzmann (Carlo Kitzlinger).

Not long after takeoff, a group of Islamic terrorists, which includes eighteen year-old Vedat (Omid Memar), attempt to take control of the plane, but things don't go smoothly for either side.

Co-writer/director Patrick Vollrath, making his feature film debut, strips everything down to the absolute essentials, not only to keep the premise as uncluttered as possible, but to make his players as apolitical as possible.

While this means that the characters aren't fully three-dimensional creations, they are human, with Vollrath wanting the viewer to bring their own emotions, beliefs, and prejudices to what is happening on screen.

Gordon-Levitt remains marvellously grounded throughout, and is well supported by Memar as the growingly uncertain Vedat.

Technically the film is first-rate (98 percent of the film takes place in the cockpit).

A predictable plot turn does partially mute one of the story's confrontations.

While not in the same league as Paul Greengrass' United 93 (2006), 7500 is still gripping viewing, and should see most movie-goers looking forward to what Vollrath does next.

Artemis Fowl

■ (PG). 94 minutes. Now streaming on Disney+.

A long, troubled production (which has been in the works since the first novel was published in 2001), this big budget fantasy finally wheezes its way to the small screen (due to COVID-19), and to say that the wait wasn't worth it is a severe understatement.

The plot centres around the title child genius (Ferdia Shaw), who discovers that the world of fairies, trolls and goblins are real, and has to make sense of their powers and rules in order to save his father (Colin Farrell, who has very little screen time), and defeat a mysterious villain who needs a mythical device to defeat all who get in her way.

Two books are clumsily stuffed into a 90-minute running time, and there are obvious signs of post-production tinkering, with details cut to a minimum, replaced instead by moronic narration by Josh Gad (who chews the scenery as usual), ludicrously over-explaining everything as if it were a children's audio book. Performances register zero due to the busy-yet-empty script, while Kenneth Branagh's slick, swirling direction cannot hide an adaptation that wants to take any and all possible short cuts in the telling of its story.

Footnote: Based on the bestseller by of the same name by Roderick Thorp, the sequel to the book "The Detective," titled "Nobody Lasts Forever," later became the source novel for the 1998 action blockbuster, "Die Hard" starring Bruce Willis and Alan Rickman.

I remember writing about the Blue Pyrenees 2012 Shiraz and referring to the district's hallmark pepperiness and of being almost able to taste the gumtrees that dominate the landscape in its region of origin.

Those signs of regionality are gone from both the BPE 2018 Richardson Shiraz and the BPE 2017 Shiraz, gone presumably with the global warming and climate change that are affecting so many of Australia's viticultural areas.

Not that they are bad wines because of the loss of regionality, far from it, especially in the case of the 2018 Richardson which is a ball-tearer of a red with plenty of berry-fruit richness to tantalise the tastebuds.

Shortly after Colin Richardson died, a couple of decades ago, Blue Pyrenees Estate released a very special merlot in his honour and vowed to release the best red of every subsquent vintage as a mark of respect for one of their most significant employees.

Now there are two wines - the aforementioned shiraz and a cabernet from the same vintage.
