State Politics Recovery steps for bushfire victims

● Lisa Neville ■ Families who lost their homes in the 2019-20 Victorian bushfires are taking the next steps in their rebuilding and recovery journey, says the State Government.

This comes with the support of payments from the Victorian Bushfire Appeal and grants, modular housing, expert planning advice and extra assistance.

People who lost their primary place of residence are receiving an additional $15,000 Housing Assistance Payment from the Victorian Bushfire Appeal on top of the $25,000 Housing Assistance Payment disbursed from April.

This is on top of other Victorian and Commonwealth grants, such as up to $42,000 in Emergency Re-Establishment Payments for underinsured households and up to $75,000 in grants for directly-impacted farm businesses. ““We’re providing as many choices and supports as possible, supporting bushfire-affected residents through the rebuilding process with grants, faster processes and tailored advice – but we all have a responsibility to ensure that homes in bushfire-prone areas are going to be safe to live in," said Lisa Neville, Minister for Police and Emergency Services “Families who wish to take a bit more time planning their rebuild can move into high-quality short-term modular housing back on their land, and those who want to start as soon as possible can make the most of our Rebuild Support Service and streamlined rules that make the process faster and easier," Ms Neville said.

Ten high-quality, short-term modular housing units have been constructed by Victorian manufacturers Ausco and Modular Spaces, and delivered to sites across Towong and East Gippsland. Five units are now formally occupied, 17 more units are under construction, and more orders are expected.

Paul Denton asks petition detail to be corrected

■ The September 16 meeting Minutes of Murrindindi Shire Council refer to a petition by Paul Denton, signed by five people.

The Minutes note: “A petition was tabled at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on August 26, 2020. The petition was submitted by Paul Denton and was signed by five people.

The petition requests that Council apply or provide support to an application to VicRoads (Regional Roads Victoria) to extend the 80km speed zone to the north side of Nichols Rd, Kinglake West to suit the Rural Living Zone and specific road hazards (identified in the petition).”

Mr Denton asks The Local Paper to note “The proposal is the reduce the limit from 100 to 80 through the rural living zone South of Nichols Rd. Also, the proposal does not discuss anything ‘to the North side of Nichols Rd’.”

Mr Denton also requests that The Local Paper note that his petition refers to a reduction of speed limit toi 80-kmh, not 60-kmh as published in the newspaper.

Mr Denton contacted The Local Paper office at 4.02am yesterday, later adding “I’ll correct your mistakes publicly to avoid further people contacting me about an apparent 60kmh zone” - Editor

Sir, It's my pleasure to report that I have nominated as a candidate for Council. It would be my privilege to represent the people of Red Gate Ward and fellow Murrindindians.

My wife, Maree, and I purchased property in Alexandra in 2010, and ever since we've sought to build a future in Murrindindi for our family of three daughters, now 16, 13, and 10.

As members of Alexandra Pony Club, we have each established life-long friendships.

I'm one of the founding directors of the non-profit Alexandra Events Corporation, and for eight years have proudly served on committees for the Alexandra Truck, Ute & Rod Show, Alexandra Pro Rodeo, and contributed to construction and ongoing management of the Victorian Truck Drivers' Memorial in Rotary Park.

Professionally, I'm the Chief Technology Officer for an Australian software company, having worked as a Software Engineer with the same business since 2000.

My first ambition for Red Gate is to provide electors a choice and an opportunity to engage with the electoral process.

If elected, I'll bring passion, pragmatism, and moderation to Council. I'll give representation to families and youth, work with other Councillors to appoint a Shire CEO to lead a post-COVID recovery, and help to develop a credible path forward for Murrindindi.

Ilona is Kinglake’s Cr ■ Ilona Gerencser will become Kinglake’s Councillor for Murrindindi Shire for the next four years.

Ms Gerencser was the only person to nominate for the Kinglake seat, after Mayor Cr Leigh Dunscombe announced that he would not restand for election after one term.

Similarly, Cr Sandice McAulay will be returned to the Cathedral Ward seat, after being the only person to nominate.

Five Councillors - Crs Jackie Ashe, Charlie Bisset, Bec Bowles, Leigh Dunscombe, Margaret Rae - did not seek re-election.

Cr Eric Lording is contesting the King Parrot Ward seat; he has Mayoral ambitions.He will first need to defeat opponent Kim Travers.

In the Koriella seat, the ballot paper lists Adam Neeves, John Walsh and John Steer.

In the Red Gate Ward, it will be a three-way contest between Damien Gallagher, Robyn Walsh and Ian McKaskill.

The Eildon Ward poll is between Karine Haslam and Robyn Ellis.

The Cheviot Ward election is between Sue Carpenter, Allan Brew and John Carpenter.

Voting packs will be mailed out from Tuesday (Oct. 6). Voting closes at 6pm on Friday, Oct. 23. Poll declaration is on Fri., Nov. 13.

Myers Creek works ■ Works have been scheduled to start this week on Myers Creek Rd between Toolangi and Healesville. The 22km section is a popular riding route which has been identified for further infrastructure upgrades to create a safer riding environment for motorcyclists.

During that time, I represented the Shire on numerous external bodies, and actively supported local community organisations.

I am standing for election again because the next four year Council term is going to be difficult.

Australia is now in a declared recession and there is no clear pathway out of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Equally all the major economies of the world are riddled with debt, economic uncertainty, and political storms.

So realistically the outlook is going to be particularly challenging for families, job security, our businesses, and even our lifestyle.

With the recent departure of the Shire's CEO the new Council could face up to six months without a replacement.

I am up for the challenge by working hard to ensure that Murrindindi Shire emerges from this economic storm as still a vital place in which to live.

I will work to ensure that the Shire has a 'shovel ready' list of projects that can receive State or Federal grant funding.

I will work to explore all alternative energy options locally.

And I will seek to enhance our Shire's reputation and appeal as a visitor destination.

After a long and successful business career I will apply a common sense approach to local issues.

Changes at Yea CFA ■ Yea CFA members have been advised by Assistant Chief Fire Officer Rob van Dorsser that Ross Williamson will continue as Officer-in-Charge of the Brigade “for the next little while”.

This follows the departure of former Captain, Rod Carbis.

Elections have not been able to be held because of COVID19 circumstances.

Mr van Dorsser, who is Officer-in-Charge of Region 12, sent messages to Yea Brigade members last week.

In his note, Mr van Dorsser referred to the Country Fire Authority values and code of ethics. He directed members to services such as Wellbeing Support and the Peer Support Program.

Local Briefs Fire at Lilydale

■ Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following a fatal fire in Lilydale on Sunday morning (Sept. 27).

Emergency services were called to a house on Old Gippsland Rd following reports several explosions were heard about 3am. Sadly, a person died at the scene. A crime scene was set up and the circumstances surrounding the fire were yet to be determined. An arson chemist and fire investigators from the Arson Squad were attend the site this morning to process the scene.

Wal is Rebels coach ■ Alexandra Football Netball Club is welcoming the appointment of Nick Wal to the position of senior football coach for the 2021 season.

Nick was assistant senior coach to Sam Kidd in 2019 and during the pre-season for the abandoned 2020 season.

Prior to joining the Rebels, Nick was assistant senior coach to Jack Cole at the Healesville Football Netball Club for season 2017 and 2018.

Nick's playing career was primarily at Healesville, seniors 1994-2008 (234 games), seniors Captain 2004 and seniors Vice-Captain 1999-2003, seniors best and fairest 2000, receiving Club Life Membership at Healesville in 2009.

Nick played Eastern Ranges TAC Cup in 1994 and was drafted on the supplementary list (rookie list) for 1994-95 at Carlton Football Club.

Nick turns 44 years of age in October this year, is married to Holly and they have two sons, Luke and Matthew, who both play junior football at the Rebels. In 2018 the family moved to Alexandra as Nick commutes to Melbourne and surrounds in his role as a works supervisor to a workforce of 18 mainly young people working across multiple sites on sites for roof plumbing company BMH Roofworx.

Local People Op Shop re-opens

■ Eildon Community Opportunity Shop will re-open on Tuesday (Oct. 6) after a sixmonth closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The difficult decision to close in late March was made because the volunteers were in the age group considered most at risk of contracting the virus.

"We were very reluctant to shut the door on our ever-loyal customers, but the medical advice was too overwhelming to ignore," President Fay Crimeen said.

"We know how disappointed so many people have been that we have had to be closed for half a year, and that disappointment is shared by the volunteers.

"We love the shop, and have greatly missed interacting with local and out-of-town patrons who have supported us through so many great years.

"However, we have been able to utilise the closure to improve the amenity of the Op Shop in a number of ways.

"New shelving has been built for several rooms, racks have been rearranged, and we believe it will make it easier for shoppers."

Initially, the reopening will be limited to three days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday - from 10am. to 4pm, and the customer limit will be four. At the end of October, the committee intends to review the number of days the shop will open.

All shoppers will be required to wear a mask, have their temperature taken, sanitise their hands, sign the contact tracing book, and adhere to the social distancing conditions with only one person in a room at a time.

"The community has shown great restraint during the closure, and we thank everyone for not leaving goods outside the door," Fay said.

"We also urge everyone to donate clean and saleable goods because it costs the Op Shop a considerable amount of money each year to take items unfit for sale to the transfer station.

"And that is money we would dearly love to distribute into the community."

Established nearly 30 years ago by a dedicated group of local residents, Eildon Opportunity Shop has raised and disbursed more than $260,000 to wide-ranging organisations in the district.

■ The search for a missing autistic boy has ended in tragedy, with the teenager’s body being found in Yarra Junction.

Victoria Police confirmed just before 5pm on September 23 that 14-year-old William Wall had been found dead.

Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious and that a report would be prepared for the Coroner.

It’s shining brightly, manicured to perfection just waiting the return of the competition golf bug, who by the way is just itching to try and defeat the poor unsuspecting golfer.

You know the one who thinks he or she is just getting it right, feeling smug. Guess again. The bug whisks it all away bringing back the humble.

The bug knows too well that we will have to come back again, the disease having taken hold deep down in the soul. We will get it right one day.

The girls are not being deterred by lockdown or the weather not always being favourable, and they have continued their practice sessions and are coming along in leaps and bounds loving their golf much to the bugs delight.

Social golf has also attracted many on Wednesday and Saturdays honing their skills, just enjoying the time out strictly all under the rules of COVID. We have forgotten what most of us look like apart from the eyes but a small price to pay for the safety of us all.

I am delighted to report the results from our first day of competition for some time. Although the weather was not the best, the sky sprung a leak a time or two, a field of seven for 18 holes and another two for nine took to the course for another monthly medal battle.

Consistent Vicki Clements (25) had the goods. Coming in with a nett 72 also managing a gobbler and a birdie! Clever girl.

The putting had Miranda Gill and Di Holdsworth a tie 32 putts. The nine-hole girls Helen Burnett pipped Robyn Parsons on the day. Well done girls great to see you having a go.

Get into Golf for Women A program for women who are total novices is currently in the making. The program will be run for six weeks. One evening a week, starting in October, dates yet to be finalised.

So for those who may want to come along, or know of someone that would be interested in getting bitten by the bug, watch this space or feel free to contact our Captain Doreen Lehmann 0414 617 972. I am so happy to be back reporting. Hopefully soon we will be able to socialise like we used to.

It was terrific to see two returning members playing on the course after some time.

Jeff Moss and John Phillips had indifferent days but we hope to see them back out and playing alot more.

Winner with a nett 70 was new member Dan O’Dwyer (24), who won $60 plus a Club Medal.

Second on CB with 71 was also a new member in Hamish Stares (31) winningthree golf balls.

Third was Jonathon Fisher (16) with 71 and he also won the putting with 25 putts. He collects three balls.

Fourth was Alan Pell (15) with nett 72 from fifthKen Whitfort (7) with nett 73 on CB from Jeff Aurisch. They both win one ball each. NTP on the 18th was Phil Armstrong and the Club Award went to John Phillips.

The stroke event held was the final round of the “54 Hole Event”, one of our men’s board events. Last year’s winner was Peter Johnston.

The top 10 placings on each of the Stableford, Par and Stroke Events receive 10-1 points each round.

This year, with 24 points, the winner was Club Captain Alan Pell. Carl Maffei was second with 18 points and Dr Martin Lowe was third with 14 points.

Next Saturday sees the start of the Men’s Club Championships. Three grades will be involved with A Grade – (0-13), B Grade – (1420) and C Grade – (21+).

There will be scratch and handicap winners each week. The Championships will be conducted over three weeks. The best handicap score from all three grades will win the Clark Trophy.

Plea to reclassify ■ Tania Maxwell, MLC for Northern Victoria, has written to Premier Daniel Andrews asking for dance studios to be reclassified under the regional roadmap and allowed to reopen across regional Victoria.

Ms Maxwell says she has been contacted by numerous dance studio operators across Northern Victoria asking for assistance.

She says they want confidence in being able to operate safely and within COVID-safe guidelines.

Dance studios in regional areas were already safely operating after the first lockdown and they also typically restrict participant numbers and observe physically distancing as part of their usual practices, especially for children’s classes.

Ms Maxwell says this extends to limited personal contact and parents generally waiting outside for dropping-off and picking-up their children outside in order to reduce congestion.

■ Without doubt, a good many wo men go warmly' clad in rabbit-skin coats which they buy under such fancy names as coney or electric seal.

A rabbit-skin properly dressed makes as good a fur coat as anyone can wish for.

But the vast majority of rabbit skins are worn by men in the shape of hats, both hard and soft.

The centre of the rabbit-skin in.dustry is Brandon, in Norfolk, where no fewer than five million skins are dealt with yearly. About two millions are English, the rest come from abroad, principally from Australia.

A rabbit has close fur next its skin, which is practically hidden by longer hair. The skins, when they arrive at the factory, are handed over to women to "pull." When this has been done, the skins are washed by machine which is constructed for the purpose of taking the fur off.

Board’s area ■ The proposed extension of the area of the Metropolian Board of Works for reticulation and sewerage purposes is exercising the attention of municipalities likely to be affected by the suggested alteration.

Health Minister Jenny Mikakos quits ■ Victorian Health Minister Jenny Mikakos quit on Saturday, after Premier Daniel Andrews laid responsibility for the COVID-19 quarantine problems with her.

“Since the start of the pandemic, I have worked every day with a single focus - to protect Victorians from an unprecedented global public health threat in our life-time,” Ms Mikakos said on Saturday (Sept. 26).

“It has been a responsibility for which I have felt only a sense of urgency and resolve.

“I have been in awe of our health professionals saving lives every day and I can never express my admiration of them enough, “When the case numbers started to rise in June I sought an explanation. On June 30, I received a briefing on a genomic sequencing report.

To say that I was shocked would be a massive understatement. The sacrifice and suffering of Victorians is something that I feel deeply.

“As I said to the Board of Inquiry, I take responsibility for my department, the buck stops with me.

“With the benefit of hindsight, there are clearly matters that my department should have briefed me on.

“Whether they would have changed the course of events only the Board and history can determine.

“For three months I had looked forward to learning who made the fateful decision to use security guards. Victorians deserve to know who.

“I have always put everything into my Ministerial responsibilities. I have never wanted to leave a job unfinished but in light of the Premier's statement to the Board of Inquiry and the fact that there are elements in it that I strongly disagree with, I believe that I cannot continue to serve in his Cabinet.

“I have never shirked my responsibility for my department, but it is not my responsibility alone.

“I look forward to the Board of Inquiry's final report.

“I am disappointed that my integrity has sought to be undermined. I know that my statement and evidence would have been uncomfortable for some.

“I have today written to the Governor of Victoria to resign my commission as a Minister effective today. I will also be resigning from the Parliament.

“I am deeply sorry for the situation that Victorians find themselves in. In good conscience, I do not believe that my actions led to them.

“I thank Victorians for the privilege of serving them. I thank the Premier, my colleagues, my loyal staff, the Labor Party and broader Labor movement for their support.

■ Jenny Mikakos not only resigned as Victoria’s Health Minister, but is also leaving politics.

She has been Member of the Legislative Council for Northern Metropolitan Province.

The Northern Metropolitan Region spans from Melbourne’s CBD to Mickleham and Kalkallo in the north, South Morang and Greensborough in the east and Bulla and Oaklands Junction in the west.

Some of its diverse features include the MCG, Parliament House, the Docklands, Flemington Racecourse, the Royal Agricultural Society Showgrounds, the Zoological Gardens and Fitzroy Gardens.

It takes in 11 lower house seats: Broadmeadows, Brunswick, Bundoora, Melbourne, Mill Park, Northcote, Pascoe Vale, Preston, Richmond, Thomastown, and Yuroke. ★ Fellow Northern Metropolitan MLC Fiona Patten (Reason Party) said this: “I have known Jenny Mikakos for 20 years and from the very beginning, whilst she didn’t always agree with me - and wasn’t afraid to tell me - she always gave me a fair hearing.

“Jenny was strong on some of the issues close to my political heart. She was there for the Safe Access Zones legislation that helped protect women’s medical privacy and she was there for the Voluntary Assisted Dying laws that now give so many people peace of mind at the end of their life. For that I will always be grateful.

“It has been an extraordinary time for us all, but especially so if you are the Health Minister.

Jenny has carried herself remarkably well during these difficult times.

“She certainly was a real presence in the Upper House chamber and, at least from my own point of view, will be missed.

“I look forward to working closely with whoever the new Health Minister is and welcoming the next Member for Northern Metropolitan to the parliament,” Ms Patten said. ★ Giving evidence to the Board of Inquiry on Friday, Mr Andrews said: ““We are left with a situation where no one owns the decision for the purposes of following up, if it was the right one, and if it wasn’t the right one, making necessary changes.”

The Andrews Government spent $130million on the program, including $60million on security.

Nearly all of the 18,000 cases and 750 deaths in Victoria since the end of May can be traced back to COVID-19 outbreaks transmitted from returned travellers to staff at two quarantine hotels – the Stamford Plaza and the Rydges on Swanston.

“I want to make it very clear to each and every member of the Victorian community that I am sorry for what has occurred here,” MrAndrews said.

Victorian Arts Benalla Art Gallery

■ For those who are eagerly waiting to visit the Gallery again, a reminder that the gallery unfortunately remain closed for the present moment.

On Sunday September 6, the Premier Daniel Andrews released the Victorian Government's Coronavirus Roadmap to Reopening.

Under this plan, galleries in metropolitan Melbourne and regional Victoria remain closed until November 23.

Given the period of closure, Kirstin Berg's Still in Love with the World has been extended to January 17. 2021.

To launch her Benalla Art Gallery exhibition Still in Love with the World artist Kirstin Berg spoke with curator Mardi Nowak about the origins of the work, the processes that brought it into being and her affinity with the community of Benalla.

Exploring ideas around residence, transformation, and the making of strength from darkness Still in Love with the World looks at the importance of using challenging times like these to slow down, find beauty in the mundane, and turn tough circumstances into new beginnings.

Merricks House

■ Merricks House brings art from nearby and from across the country to the Mornington Peninsula for regular exhibitions.

It is an intimate space for artists and visitors.

Merricks House was built in 1926 by John Joyner and his sons as a home for John's daughter Tilly and her new husband Alf Weston.

This fine old home had become run-down, but major renovations in 2013 turned it into an award-winning heritage site.

Today it provides an open, light space for exhibitions of prominent Australian artists and sculptors.

Observations Portraits From Home ■ Artists of the Victorian Artists Society, founded in 1870 and based at Albert Street East Melbourne, have turned the COVID lockdown into an exhibition titled Portraits from Home, with a range of subjects based around their home life.

Normally out and about painting the scenes of Melbourne or painting plein air in the countryside, artists have turned the view from the lounge rooms, kitchen gardens, selfportraits, home studies and pets into a new exhibition.

The historic Victorian Artists Society, which is celebrating its 150th Birthday this year and with a recent $2.5 million renovation, has been forced to temporarily close with the COVID-19 restrictions and cancel its traditional exhibitions, and has now turned to the online exhibitions.

Within the walls of the Victorian Artists Society, young artists including Arthur Streeton, Charles Conder, Tom Roberts, Walter Withers, Frederick McCubbin, and many others, commenced their journey of brushstrokes, which today form the foundation of Australia’s major art collections in national galleries across Australia.

President of the Victorian Artists Society, Eileen Mackley said: ”The Artists and the Society are looking forward to the time when it will be safe to resume the Victorian Artists Society’s normal exhibitions and the freedom to paint outdoors.”

"There's nothing like being absorbed in a new story over many months of writing as the plot takes unexpected twists and turns. I still love that feeling, even after 20 years," McInerney said.

Great times with Brian

■ One of the best days I had in West Hollywood was when Aussie rocker Brian Mannix visited our little village. He stayed at the Rock and Roll Hotel, the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites on Santa Monica Boulevard.

I showed Brian and his lovely wife Sue around Los Angeles.

We had so much fun.

Brian Mannix is an Australian rock music singer and actor.

He was formerly the lead singer of 1980s band Uncanny X-Men, and in 2006 performed in the Countdown Spectacular He starred on Dancing with the Stars, and also at the 2006 AFL Grand Final.

In my Countdown podcasts, Brian Mannix has revealed so many amazing and funny stories.

Bought on Craigslist ■ For $17,000, an imported 1995 Japanese Toyota Hilux fire truck can be yours.

"This particular unit features ladder and hose racking, a slide-out pump tray in the bed, cargo basket, and two spot lights on the driver's side," reads an ad, one of many on Craigslist right now, hawking private fire trucks in California.

The devastating 2020 wildfires, sparked by an unforgiving dry lightning storm in August amid a soaring heat wave, left over one million acres of California torched, and the state's fire services dangerously depleted of firefighters, trucks and other resources.

It should probably come as no surprise that worried residents would start to look into DIY fire protection, but the market for fire trucks on Craigslist right now is unprecedented.

NPR reports that a Sacramento company called Vans From Japan is cashing in on the demand by buying up trucks from Japan and making money selling them in on California, and they're using Craigslist to offload the vehicles.

Meth floods across border ■ US Customs and Border Protection officers are noticing an alarming trend in the illegal drug trade: Methamphetamine is flooding across the border at an alltime high, and officers say the Coronavirus pandemic has affected its prevalence and price tag.

"They're in business to make money, so [the cartels] are still looking for every possible way to get narcotics across," Tucson field office Director of Field Operations Guadalupe Ramirez Jr. said.

While battling the coronavirus pandemic, Border Patrol agents and U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers said they've been working nonstop to intercept illegal drug activity at the U.S.Mexico border.

In Tucson, Ariz., officers said they've seen a recent spike in meth and fentanyl at the southern border.

"We're actually the smallest field office but we're normally number two or three when it comes to narcotics seizures," Ramirez said. "Where other locations have seen meth really go up, we've seen fentanyl go up here, but we're still, out of the four southwest border field offices, we're still number three in meth seizures. So, they're still very high."

Officers say in all, the total volume of meth seized is almost double than last year with still a couple months left to go in the fiscal year. In fact, the volume of meth seized has been increasing annually for several years. In fiscal year 2019, the Office of Field Operations seized some 68,585 points of meth nationwide, compared to 118,153 pounds so far this year.

In Laredo, Texas, meth seizures have been happening almost daily. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers intercepted shipments containing methamphetamine with an estimated street value of over $29.8 million in two enforcement actions at the World Trade Bridge back in August.

A few days later, at the Juarez-Lincoln Bridge, they seized additional meth totalling over $3.3 million in street value. "Supply and demand, you know, as we hit their supply line, the demand is still there, so the price goes up," Ramirez said.

■ A ground breaking discovery in Australia is giving new meaning to the term natural remedy.

Using hundreds of honeybees, a new study reveals the venom in these insects' stingers quickly kills breast cancer cells.

Dr Ciara Duffy says honeybee venom destroys multiple types of breast cancer, even the hard to treat triple-negative variety.

The study in the journal, Precision Oncology finds honeybee venom not only eradicates these cancers, it also breaks up a cancerous cell's ability to reproduce.

The venom also contains a compound called melittin which researchers say helps this natural remedy stop the disease with remarkable speed.

■ It probably won't take a great deal of persuasion to convince investors that there's an "age of disorder."

That's the title of a new Deutsche Bank research note, which says the world is entering its sixth distinct era of modern times.

So say goodbye to the "era of globalization" and brace yourself for the "age of disorder" where millennials, firmly established as the generation of 'have nots', take their revenge and redistribute wealth from the old to young.

Millennials are usually defined as those between the ages of 22 and 38 years old in 2019, according to Nielsen Media Research.

The note by strategist Jim Reid warns the discussion of inequality within and between countries will not be limited to wealth and income.

"In fact, an issue that is quickly emerging as a political force is the intergenerational gap," the report says.

"Assuming life does not become more economically favourable for Millennials as they age (many find house prices increasingly out of reach), this could be a potential turning point for society and start to change election results and thus change policy."

US debt problems ■ US government debt is on track to exceed the size of the economy for the 12 months ended Sept. 30, a milestone not hit since World War II that has been brought into reach by a giant fiscal response to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Congressional Budget Office is expected to report on Wednesday that federal debt held by the public is projected to reach or exceed 100 per cent of U.S. gross domestic product, the broadest measure of U.S. economic output.

That would put the U.S. in the company of a handful of nations with debt loads that exceed their economies, including Japan, Italy and Greece.

U.S. government debt is expected to exceed the size of the economy for fiscal year 2020.U.S. federal debt as a share of GDP Sources: Office of Management and Budget.

The surge in borrowing so far isn't creating angst among investors or hampering the U.S.'s ability to borrow more. Investors have gobbled up U.S. Treasury assets, drawn to their relative safety.

Moreover, interest rates are expected to remain low, suggesting the government still has plenty of room to borrow. By another measure, the U.S. passed the mark in the April to June quarter, when government spending surged to combat the new coronavirus and tax revenue plunged.

But this would be the first time in more than 70 years for it to do so for the federal government's full fiscal year.

The last time the U.S. debt level exceeded economic output was in 1946, when it stood at 106% after years of financing military operations to help end the Second World War. "The problem, of course, is spending. More and more and more and more and more spending.

The promises of "free" stuff come with a price tag and are not free. Even a relatively bright 10-year-old knows that." said a Washington insider who has worked for both political parties. "People in government, in both parties, are like really bad alcoholics. They simply can't stop themselves from spending. Ever!"

■ Irene Hewitt was born in 1922 and began singing at an early age. Irene was 18 when she became the resident vocalist in Tye's Radio Revue on 3XY, which was broadcast every Sunday night from the Princess Theatre.

The compere was Eric Pearce, and Irene sang Ida Sweet As Apple Cider as her debut song on the show. On many occasions Irene sang duets with Jack Perry.

She sang at many of the local dances and was also resident vocalist at the Coconut Grove Nightclub in Chapel St, South Yarra.

Around that time she married her first husband, who played saxophone in the band at The Coconut Grove. Irene also sang regularly at the famous Chevron Hotel.

In 1954 Irene appeared on the national radio show Australia's Hour of Song with Dick Fair.

She was a regular guest on ABC radio shows and sang on cruise ships.

In 1957 Irene was cast in the television series Take That which was a ‘live to air’15-minute school classroom comedy. It was one of the first comedy shows produced by Crawford Productions, a bit like Yes What, the old radio series.

Take That also starred English actor Phillip Stainton, Joff Ellen, Frank Rich, Keith Eden and Jack Perry.

Irene sang on many television variety shows during her career. Her film credits include Blue Fire Lady, Dimboola, I Live With Me Dad and Lonely Hearts.

In 1981 Irene was cast as Mrs Swabb, the housekeeper, in an Australian tour of the Alan Bennett-play, Habeus Corpus. The cast included a great bunch of popular television actors - English actor Frank Thornton (Are You Being Served), Pat McDonald (Number 96) and Liz Burch (The Flying Doctors) .

There was a night during the tour when a leg snapped off the stage settee that almost everyone had to sit on. Irene madly searched around back stage in the dark and finally walked onstage with a paint tin which she popped under the edge of the settee and the play proceeded without a hitch.

She remained friends with Frank Thornton

and his wife and they always sent each other Christmas cards. Irene played guest roles in many television series including Prisoner and The Henderson Kids.

Irene loved music and was a regular attendee at the International Sinatra meetings. Some of her recordings were - When Johnny Comes Marching Home, I Didn't Know The Gun Was Loaded and One More River To Cross (with Don Harper and His Orchestra).

In 1997 Irene was a guest vocalist at a special fundraising concert for 96.5FM. It was a big show with Val Jellay, Clyde Simpson, Bruce Skeggs, David McGee, Ray Lawrence, The Creole Bells and many others in the line up.

Irene Hewitt loved life and when she was very ill she just refused to give in and slipped out of the hospital to visit her friends.

She passed away in 2004 and I attended her funeral. Long time friends Terry Gill and Carole Anne got everyone singing. Irene would have loved it and also the thunderous applause as the coffin was carried out of the funeral parlour.

The list of characters includes a deeply tormented WWII veteran (Bill Skarsgard), a self-possessed spider crazed evangelist (Harry Melling), a dangerously twisted travelling couple of evilly perverted intentions (Jason Clarke and Riley Keough), an unholy preacher (Robert Pattinson), and a crooked Sheriff (Sebastian Stan), among other colourful characters, however, the standout is "Spiderman" star Tom Holland as the young and protective Arvin with a bewitching and compulsive performance of total believability as he fights the threatening forces that increasingly surround him.

Based on the novel by Donald Ray Pollack, who supplies the delightfully entrancing narration, co-produced by Jake Gyllenhaal, and co-written and directed with tremendous grip and sensitivity by Antonio Campos, and aided by a significantly striking soundtrack, the end result is a deep rooted, intelligent, slow burning, provocative and haunting backwoods tale on delusion, loss and the abandonment of control, all brimming with a mixture of knife-cutting atmosphere, eerie chills and uneasy seat-squirming suspense with the devil at its heels.

Stars: *** Review: Movies about possessed or menacing inanimate objects are almost a genre unto themselves with such devilish delights that includes Dolls in "Dead of Night" (1945) and Annabelle in "The Conjuring" series, Cars in John Carpenter's "Christine" (1983) and "The Car" (1977), a Computer in Stanley Kubrick's "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968), a Videotape in "The Ring" series, a Television in Tobe Hooper's "Poltergeist" (1982), almost endless haunted house movies, most notably "The Innocents" (1961), "The Haunting" (1963) and "The Changeling" (1980), the Ark of the Covenant in Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of The Lost Ark" (1981) and even a Homicidal Car Tyre in "Rubber" in 2010, to name just a few.

Now add to the list a Red Dress in "In Fabric," an effectively quirky and darkly serious comic ghost story set against the backdrop of a busy winter sales period in a department store and follows the life of a cursed dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences, a surreal and imaginative kaleidoscope of images set in 1970s London from the uniquely talented cult filmmaker Peter Strickland (Berberian Sound Studio) who evokes the idiosyncratic work of such British filmmakers as Ken Russell (The Devils), Nicolas Roeg (Don't Look Now) and Donald Cammell (Performance and White of the Eye), as well as the supreme screen surrealists, David Lynch (Blue Velvet) and Dario Argento (Deep Red and Suspiria).

Brimming with an array of striking colour palates to enrich the 70s feel, and driven by a stellar cast that includes Marianne JeanBaptiste, Hayley Squires, Steve Oram and Julian Barratt, among others, they all combine to reveal bizarrely fun, subtle, bonkers, ambiguous and deliriously artificial horror-comedy that remains consistently frightening and inventive throughout, and even though it remains consistently busy on the surface, there is a shallowness at its centre, but overall, this story of a haunted one size fits all blood coloured dress works well, and is a worthy addition to the growing list possessed objects before it.

Breezily likeable is the best way to describe the new film from Sofia Coppola, whose lightweight touch actually suits the material this time around.

Rashida Jones stars as Laura, an author who has been married to Dean (Marlon Wayans) for several years, with their two young daughters taking up a lot of her time.

Dean is constantly travelling, trying to make his newly created advertising agency a success, but a strange incident suddenly makes Laura believe her marriage isn't as stable as she once thought.

Giving this doubt added life is Laura's playboy father Felix (Bill Murray), who irresponsibly encourages his daughter to follow her husband.

Complications ensue when she agrees to do so. On The Rocks gets off to a shaky start, feeling like a Woody Allen-Whit Stillman wannabe (also reminding me of Rebecca Miller's disappointing 2015 film Maggie's Plan), but once Bill Murray arrives on the scene, things pick up considerably.

Murray is in fine form, and what's better is the chemistry between him and the wonderful Jones, who both appear comfortable ad-libbing with each other.

Like Coppola's previous efforts, this is slight stuff, but there is a noticeably relaxed nature to her direction here, allowing the story to just entertain.

Outdated patriarchal entitlement is very gently touched upon, and there is obvious inspiration from Coppola's own relationship with her larger-than-life father, Francis Ford Coppola.

On The Rocks may not be substantial viewing, but it is surprisingly fun (and one of the most laconic views of New York City ever seen), anchored by terrific performances by two actors who expertly know how to play off one another.

Sputnik ■ (MA). 113 minutes. Opens in selected states October 1.

A deft mix of sc-fi/horror and political commentary, this smartly crafted endeavour makes for absorbing viewing.

Set in 1983, when the Cold War between the USSR and the USA was still going strong, the film opens with a two-man space module making a less-than-routine return to earth.

Only one, Konstantin (Pyotr Fyodorov), survives, and is taken to a secret military facility to be treated and briefed. Colonel

Semiradov (Fedor Bondarchuk), in charge of the operation, persuades outspoken doctor Tatiana Klimova (Oksana Akinshina) to oversee and detail Konstantin's condition, but she soon sees that the cosmonaut's issues don't originate from this world.

Screenwriters Oleg Malovichko and Andrey Zolotarev astutely use an era many of us remember to examine what is happening in Russia now, with a government's increasingly overt suppression of freedom of speech and difference in political viewpoints.

The situation involving Konstantin intelligently symbolises the varying moral paths people under such tyranny may walk down in order to survive.

While these themes give the material a meaty foundation, director EgorAbramenko doesn't forget to deliver a highly entertaining scifi/horror/thriller, and Sputnik succeeds on this level as well. Performances are fine, with Akinshina (Lilya 4-Ever) a clear stand-out.

Production values are first-rate.

However you want to approach it, Sputnik is a winner, and deserves to find an audience before the inevitable remake shuffles our way.

Antebellum ■ (MA). 105 minutes. Opens in selected states October 1.

If you're looking for subtlety, Antebellum isn't the film for you. If you're after a visceral, atmospheric thriller that uses an interesting gimmick to look at important subject matter, then chances are you will be reasonably enthralled.

The story centres on Eden (Janelle Monae), a slave who works on a notorious cotton farm, and along with her fellow prisoners, is constantly abused by the Confederate owners of the plantation.

After a number of failed escapes, Eden plans another one, but things take some strange turns which will not only affect the present, but also the future.

Gerard Bush and Christopher Renz, making their feature film debut, direct proceedings with confidence, and with a talented technical crew, ensure that this is a gorgeous looking movie.

Their script is a mixed bag, presenting its sadly relevant themes and messages in a heavy-handed, obvious manner, rather than quietly weaving them into a story that gets under your skin in a genuinely unsettling way.

The duo also seem influenced by the films of M. Night Shyamalan, and Alex Cox's 1987 cult movie, Walker. It's on the brink of falling into another civil war.

Having his first outing since May, Aldebaran Zeus trained by Brent Lilley and driven by Chris Alford was swiftly away from a 20 metre backmark and was immediately sent forward to arrest the lead away from first starter Evas Image at the post on the first occasion which had stepped cleanly from the pole.

Settling mid-field in the moving line after going forward at the start from gate three, Goodtime Floyd ran home strongly to prevail by 3.8 metres in 1-58.9 from Myzarmi which followed him home. Our Sir Oliver (three back the markers) used the sprint lane for third 3.1 metres back.

With Ararat's Michael Bellman in the sulky, Shady Dancer starting from inside the second line was able to follow the poleline leader Officially Shady all the way enjoying a sweet trip. Easing away from the inside approaching the final bend, Shady Dancer finished best to register a 2.5 metre margin over the raging hot favourite Vigoroso which raced exposed from the bell. Oficially Shady held down third 7.2 metres back. The mile rate 1-57.8.

■ Riddell trainer/driver Chris Lang's 3Y0 Orlando Vici-Moyabamba gelding Red White And Bloom was impressive in taking the 2190 metre Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile in a rate of 203.3. Having his first start sinceApril, Red White And Bloom was taken back from gate five to possie five back along the markers as Iona Spider led from gate four.

Coming away from the inside to race exposed for the final circuit, Red White And Bloom showed plenty of heart to defy all challengers, accounting for Little Yankee which trailed the pacemaker by 7.4 metres. Iona Spider held on for third 1.6 metres away.

Kilmore fixture ■ The Claire Weston Photography Pace over 1690 metres commenced the Kilmore fixture on Tuesday with the victor being Monegeeta based 4Y0 Bettors Delight-Majestic Reign gelding Reign Maker for part-owner/trainer Nick Beale and youthful reinsman Jayden Barker who is attached to the David Miles stable.

■ Daylesford trainer/driver Anne-Maree Conroy's 8Y0 Framework-Melva Grace gelding Uncle Al ran up to his last start second at Ballarat when successful in the 2190 metre OKR 98.3FM Trotters Handicap. Stepping safely from barrier four, Uncle Al was awarded the front after Mystic Chip galloped running into the first turn and after being rated to perfection, kicked clear on turning to just last by a head from Morgan Mylee (one/one at bell) and Regal Assassin which trailed the winner finishing a neck back.

Philip a former Geelong HRC President and committeeman was a long time bookmaker who operated around many Victorian tracks as well as conducting a highly profitable betting agency on international cricket which turned over millions of dollars. Restrained back to the tail of the field from outside the front line, Shes A Hovercraft despite being four wide in the last lap dashed to the front on turning to score by 6.6 metres from Safe Jewels (three wide ahead of her) and Bella Bronski (one/two), returning a mile rate of 1-57.9.

Trained by Bolinda's Brent Lilley for Julie Mifsud (Aussies wife), Majestic Connies having her second start on Australian soil began brilliantly from 10 metres to assume control on the first turn. ■ Shepparton was the Thursday venue and Junortoun's Graham family - Garry, Melva and Kirsten were elated when their 4Y0 A Rocknroll Dance-Three Secrets gelding Heza Secret at start number two scored in the 2190 metre Shepparton BMW Maiden Pace, Trained by Garry, Heza Secret driven by Bendigo based Jayden Brewin after starting inside the second line finished full of running from a mid-field passage to register a 8.5 metre victory from Not So Big from near last returning a mile rate of 2-00.7. Awesome Reactor was third 2.7 metres away after racing in the open.

■ The JDC ConstructionsTrotters Mobile over 2190 metres looked to be a highly competitive race, however the heavily supported favourite Peregrine Phoenix first up since July for the Romsey stable of Chris Svanosio justified the backing by winning in a rate of 2-02.9.

Driven by Chris, Peregrine Phoenix began best to lead from barrier three, before electing to take a trail on Nerveracking who handed over to Lord Loki which had been slow to begin from the extreme draw within a lap. Using the sprint lane, Peregrine Phoenix finished with great zest to defeat Nerveracking by a neck which also used the sprint lane, with Lord Loki a game third 4.2 metres back.

Police look for missing Springvale girl Soe Mar Yar Bee

■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teenager Soe Mar Yar Bee. The 15-year-old was last seen at her Springvale address about 2am 27 September.

Police and family hold concerns for Soe Mar Yar Bee’s welfare due to her age and her disappearance is out of character.

It is hard to go past Rothfire, but I am a big rap for the Hawkes-trained North Pacific, especially if it is wet.

Top jockey unwell

■ I was saddened to hear from leading owner, John Sweeney, that former top jockey, Peter Mertens, is not well.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Peter couldn't talk long, unfortunately he is really battling.

A winner of over 2500 races, he had a very bad fall back in 2013 at Hamilton, badly injuring his shoulder. This brought about his retirement.

John said Peter won many a race for him, 17 in all.These included the Sunline Stakes on Candy Vale, and Pretty Penny, the sire of Pretty Brazen and others.

In all he booted home seven Group One winners, including two on Sirmione, for Bart Cummings, including the Australian Cup. He also scored for John Sweeney on Dame Claire in the Ansett Classic. Dame Claire was the dam of the ill-fated McLairey, which John raced, unfortunately injured racing.

Tim is on the mend

■ Former Racing Editor of the Herald Sun, Tim Habel, is on the mend, and back in action.

Tim is the popular Secretary of the Victorian Media Association, and was hit with an illness a few weeks back.
