More grants cash

■ Whittlesea Council has reimagined some of the community grant programs to support community connectedness.

The Community Group Support Grant Program is a one-time only opportunity with funding of up to $2000 is available to support community groups to reconnect with each other by resuming pre-COVID activities or transitioning to new ways of operating.

B’bank re-opens ■ Brimbank Council is able to reopen some select spaces and services this week. Outdoor playgrounds, off leash dog parks and outdoor exercise equipment will re-open for use, with physical distancing and group number limits in place.

Llibraries will bring back the Click and Collect service for members.

Compulsory move

■ Monash Council has compulsory acquired part of a parcel of land (2,720m2) that abuts Scotchmans Creekin Mount Waverley to preserve it as open space and to ensure the continuation of a section of the Scotchmans Creek Trail. Council is planning to relocate the path from its current location to move it closer to the creek to sit on the land that has been acquired.

Plans for Kilsyth

■ Yarra Ranges Shire Council has adopted its Master Plan for the Elizabeth Bridge Reserve in Kilsyth, a document that maps out how the reserve will look in the coming 10 years.

The Master Plan proposes improvements to the reserve, including expanding the path network in the reserve.

Industrial boost

■ Mitchell Council has endorsed the start of a formal process that proposes the rezoning of land to meet future industrial and business needs. The land at 470 SeymourTooborac Rd, Hilldene will have the ability to support jobs and investment in the medium to longer term with a planning scheme amendment drafted that proposes the rezoning of 53 hectares of land.

■ Tania Maxwell, Northern Victoria MLC, is calling for tougher checkpoint checks on public transport into regional areas from Melbourne ahead of restrictions easing which are expected to come into effect in regional Victoria this week.

Helen Haines MHR for Indi, has congratulated Murrindindi Shire Council on receiving $1.08 million funding for projects. Dr Haines said Federal Government support for shovel-ready projects in North East communities was vital for economic and community recovery from the impacts COVID-19 business and social restrictions. “Funding from the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure helps to sustain jobs and improve access, amenity and safety in Yea, Alexandra, Castella, Buxton, Kinglake and Kinglake West," she said.

The Labor Party looks likely to throw everything it has at the Nillumbik Shire Council in a bid to wrestle control back from Cr Karen Egan and conservative colleagues. Part of the offensive was a speech in the Legislative Assembly this month by Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green who - under Parliamentary Privilege - hinted as “malfeasance” at the Council.

Marysville’s ‘Light In The Trees’project will receive $6000 funding from the Murrindindi Shire Community Planning Grants Program, after an application for $7500. Decorative lighting will be installed in Murchison St, with solar panels and lights to be installed as the first phase.

4-3 vote on Cemetery ■ A planning permit for a cemetery at Kinglake was passed on a narrow 4-3 vote at last week’s Murrindindi Shire Council.

Mayor Cr Leigh Dunscombe, Cr Eric Lording and Cr Charlie Bisset voted against the controversial application. In favour of the motion were Crs Jackie Ashe, Bec Bowles, Sandice McAulay and Margaret Rae. At one stage of the debate, Deputy Mayor Cr Rae raised a point of order that Mayor Cr Dunscombe’s debate “is irrelevant to the substantive matter of the motion”.

Cr Eric Lording’s bid failed for Cr Dunscombe be granted an extension of his speaking time to address the motion. Cr Lording’s motion failed to gain a seconder.

Crs Dunscombe and Lording proposed a motion that the planning permit be denied, and said that the proposal was inconsistent with the Murrindindi Planning Scheme.

Crs Dunscombe and Lording said that the proposal would “adversely impact on the significant geographic and physical features of the area”.

They claimed that a cemetery at the 265 Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd address would permanently remove land from any future agricultural production. The denial motion was lost.

Mayor Cr Leigh Dunscombe was defeated in his bid for the cemetery planning permit to be denied.

Only Crs Eric Lording and Charlie Bisset supported the motion to deny a permit.

They unsuccessfully argued that the proposal is inconsistent with the Public Use Zone, and also is inconsistent with the decision guidelines of the Murrindindi Planning Scheme.

Cr Rae’s move to close down Cr Dunscombe’s debate on a point of order that he was being “irrelevant” is one of the first public indications of a split between the Deputy Mayor and the Mayor.

Observers believe that Cr Rae would like to be re-appointed as Murrindindi Mayor if she is returned to Council after the election that closes at 6pm on Friday, October 23.

Results will be declared on Friday, November 13.

Exemption to not wear mask ■ Yea newsagent Lyn Bailey says she was “gutted” that a local customer complained to local Police that she was not wearing a COVID19 at her High St shop.

Ms Bailey has an official written exemption from wearing a mask, due to serious health reasons.

Ms Bailey praised the approach of the Yea Police for their kind and balanced approach when they visited the shop to investigate the complaint.

Ms Bailey said that no customer had asked her about the exemption, and that she was disappointed about the person’s lack of courgae to raise the subject with her personally.

She questioned where the traditional Australian spirit, and said that in the past people would have the fortitude to raise an issue directly with a person.

Ms Bailey cited the example of a lady customer, suffering from lung cancer, who had to wear a mask, because she had not sought an exemption.

Ms Bailey said the woman had great difficulty in breathing normally.

Ms Bailey asked people not to rush to judgement of people who were not wearing masks.

■ Murrindindi Council’s Cr Charlie Bissett disclosed a material conflict of interest at last week’s Council meeting.

Cr Bisset’s disclosure was connected with the use and development of land at the former Thornton Primary School for the purpose of a café.

Cr Bisset said family member of hers has a financial interest in the works that may result if a planning permit is issued.

■ The Council voted to give notice of a dicision to grant a permit. Cr Bisset left while the motion was discussed, and did not vote.

Citizen Angelina Bell spoke in support of the cafe planning application.

Nominations open

Citizens object to plan ■ A calvalcade of local residents appeared at last week’s Murrindindi Council videoconferenced meeting to object to plans for a cemetery at 265 Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd, Kinglake Central.

Speaking against the proposal were Jemima Richards, Linda Brodersen, Shane Sparkes, Bron Sparkes, Ann Burgess, Paul Rogers, John Griffiths, Colin French, Nigel Head, Lola Sparkes, Dom Sparkes and Bev Johns.

Murrindindi Shire CEO Craig Lloyd read submissions against the cemetery proposal from Lyn Gunter, Nina Lunde and Mei-Ling Griffiths.

Speaking in favour of the proposal were Alex Pottage, Christine Stonehouse, Cheryl Phillips and Liane Dawson.

Mr Lloyd read a submission to the meeting on behalf of Les Joynson in support of the application.

■ Nominations open tomorrow (Thu., Sep. 17) for the local Council elections. It is a brief period for nominees to file their paperwork, as nominations close at 12 Noon on Tuesday (Sep. 22). Lodgement of candidate statements, photos and questionnaires closes 12 noon on Wednesday (Sep. 23).

The mailing of ballot packs starts on Tuesday, October 6, and continues over 48 hours.

Voring closes at 6pm on Friday, October 23.

Results will be declared on Friday, November 13.

These dates apply in each of Murrindindi, Mansfield, Mitchell, Nillumbik, Strathbogie and Yarra Ranges Shires. No elections will be held in the City of Whittlesea.

Libby at Rotary ■ Libby Kotschet of the Murrindindi Library Service was guest speaker at the Rotary Club of Alexandra this month. She spoke about the Book Butler Program, a contactless delivery service available to all residents in the Murrindindi Shire.

Despite COVID-19, the library service continues behind closed doors, but without access to resources from other libraries. In April, some 2013 items were delivered to 400 homes.

In August 3451 items were delivered to approx 300 homes. Initially deliveries were made by library staff, but Working for Victoria staff have taken over this task.

People phone in to the library (5772 0333), let staff know what their interests are and a bag of relevant items are delivered. Many of the clients are repeat customers. .

Borrow Box is another option for access to e-books and audio books. Access is via a library membership card. An app allows access to the electronic resources of Yarra Plenty Regional and Murrindindi libraries.

KLW speed limits

■ Murrindindi Shire Council will tonight (Wed.) consider a petition that calls for the extension of a 60-kmh speed limit to the north side of Nichols Rd, Kinglake West.

A petition was tabled at the meeting of Council on August 26. The petition was submitted by Paul Denton and was signed by five people.

Plan for Reserve

■ A Master Plan for the Kinglake Memorial Reserve has been prepared. Murrindindi Council engaged Michael Smith and Associates in April.COVID-19 restrictions affected the Shire’s planned methods of community engagement and consultation, however they were undertaken via online methods. Only one submission was received in the public exhibition period.

The 2020-21 budget currently includes Capital Works commitments for: ■ Public toilets ■ Pavilion safety railing associated with concrete steps ■ Cricket nets chain wire mesh conversion ■ Tennis Courts maintenance.

A proposed $1.8 million project budget includes a basic oval surface upgrade ($600,000), pathway/roads/drainage upgarde ($446,000), netball shelter upgardes ($492,500), landscape improvements ($38,500) and signage upgardes ($61,500).

Flowerdale farm gets nod ■ Murrindindi Council has given the green light to use and development of the land at 86 Moores Rd for the purpose of group accommodation.

Despite substantial community objections, Deputy Mayor Cr Margaret Rae and Cr Bec Bowles combined to propose that a planning permit be issued.

Prior to the commencement of any buildings and works associated with the cabins and communal space the developer must demonstrate that the endorsed farm management plan has substantially commenced.

They will need to show completion of fencing, the establishment of the walnut and chestnut farms and evidence of the re-establishment of the cherry farm to the Council.

A number of Flowerdale made submissions to Murrindindi Council, speaking against the proposal: Tony Humphrey, Donna Humphrey, Vikki Patten, Paul McNamara, Sarah Hart, and Langton McKenzie-McHarg.

Shane Sylvanspring spoke in support.

The use of the group accommodation building approved under this permit and the use of the cabin accommodation must not operate after 10am on any day with a declared fire danger rating of Code Red and Extreme.

● Cindy McLeish, Eildon MLA Support Fund. Ms McLeish said that whenasked why the government was not supporting 400,000 sole traders in Victoria, he responded, "Many

of them don't actually have a tax-paying relationship with the state".

"Hardworking business owners are having their life's work ripped from them because Daniel Andrews' incompetence caused Victoria's second wave of coronavirus, yet no substantial support is being offered,” Ms McLeish said.

Despite promising that a support package was coming, Daniel Andrews has made no announcements of support for business.

"Businesses can't survive on the empty words of an incompetent Premier, they still have to pay their bills," Ms McLeish said.

The Liberal Nationals have called on Daniel Andrews to immediately announce a comprehensive business support package to help businesses keep their door open and staff in a job.

Recognition for Sir John ■ There has been a call for Murrindindi Shire to give greater recognition to pioneer resident Sir John Gellibrand.

Sir John held the ‘Balaclava’ property, with a homestead alongside the Murrindindi River.

After his death in 1945, his remains were buried at the Yea Cemetery.

Major General Sir John Gellibrand, KCB, DSO and Bar was a senior Australian Army officer in the First World War, Chief Commissioner of the Victoria Police from 1920 to 1922, and a member of the House of Representatives, representing the Tasmanian seat of Denison for the Nationalist Party from 1925-28.

Sir John purchased the ‘Balaclava’property, at Murrindindi on August 1, 1936, where his son Tom had a farm, and made his home there, selling properties in Tasmania.

Gellibrand died at Balaclava from a cerebral haemorrhage on June 3, 1945, and was buried in Yea Cemetery. He was survived by his wife and children.

Current day Murrindindi identity Don Lawson says that he believes greater historical recognition is due to Sir John, who was consulted by Prime Ministers Joseph Lyons and Robert Menzies about defence matters.

■ Queensland Fruit Fly will start to become active again soon.The insidious pest that lays its eggs in a wide range of host fruits, including major crops of stone fruit, tomatoes, cherries, citrus and grapes.

These eggs become maggots within the fruit, spoiling the fruit and making it inedible.

This be problematic for backyard harvests, and also a significant threat to our commercial operators within the region.

Murrindindi Shire Council's Environment Portfolio Councillor Rebecca Bowles is urging community members to take action to help reduce the spread of the Fly. “We all have a role to play in the control of QFF. Understanding the threat and taking the necessary steps to educate yourself is crucial to protecting our horticulture industry,” Cr Bowles said.

“For the last two years, Council and Upper Goulburn Landcare Network have run a QFF monitoring and trapping program, which resulted in several confirmed captures.

“These captures occurred in Yea, Murrindindi and Trawool areas. However, we expect that QFF is more widespread within our Shire than just these locations, so we need to make it as hard as we can for the pest to multiply.

“Residents who are already involved in the Program and have received a trap, can get in touch with Council or UGLN to receive another lure to replace the original one (which has a lifespan of three months once opened).

“If you want to find out more about this pest and how you can help manage its spread, Goulburn Murray Valley Regional Fruit Fly Co-Ordinator, Ross Abberfield, has put together a fantastic 'No Flies on Us' information pack.

Thornton permit

■ Murrindindi Councillors voted unanimously in favour of issuing a Notice of Decision to grant a permit for use of land (the existing old Thornton Primary School building) for a café at 3 Back Eildon Rd, Thornton.

The café will have seating capacity for 36 patrons and include both sit-down and takeaway food, serving breakfast and lunch, as well as morning and afternoon teas and hot drinks for patrons.

Council's Land Use Portfolio Councillor, Margaret Rae, said three submissions from neighbouring properties were considered at the meeting, including objections about the noise, traffic and environmental impacts.

“Councillors decided the issues raised by objectors could be managed through permit conditions, such as setting regular opening times for the café and conditions on excessive noise.

“This application is supported by local and state planning policies and the café will be a fantastic addition to the local community and to visitors to the Thornton area.” Cr Rae said.

Letters to the Editor Wire rope barriers Sir, The Local Paper has had a piece about the disputed value of wire rope barriers, including quotes from Eildon MP, Cindy McLeish, in support of her objection to them.

I support the objections of Ms McLeish, and have tried to contact her.

I have driven most of the main roads in Victoria over the last 56 years, in the course of my profession, I fund the wire rope barriers to be a major retrograde step, wespecially where, and how, they have been installed in the last few years.

A lot of my driving is at night and, apart from poorly adjusted, missing, and over-powerful headlights on ‘boy toys’ and trucks, the main hazards are from wombats, deer, and kangaroos, a particular problem along the narrow main roads from Coldstream to Shepparton, Benalla and Mansfield.

Prior to installation of the centre-of-theroad wire rope barriers, I had plenty of warning, and time to avoid these animals as they and other pedestrian animals such as echidnas and koalas, could be seen heading for my side of the road.

Now I get almost no warning when one emerges from, or leaps over, the centre barrier, resulting in damage to vehicle and animal, if not another avoidable road-kill statistic.

Another problem arises, especially between Yarra Glen and Yea, and Yea and Merton, where parts of the road width is restricted to the point where there is no opportunity to safely pull over, to rescue the injured aninal, or remove a dead animal and check for young etc.

Several times, I have had to replace an off-side wheel, close to the remaining lane, a scary exercise at the best of the times.

Trucks, especially along these road sections, do not seem to reduce speed for very much at all, or even stop for the animals they have killed.

I have a few suggestions: ■ Lower the speed limit where centre-ofthe-road barriers are installed; ■ Improve/widen the section of roadside where centre-of-the-road barriers exist, for emergency stops, or to run off the road when avoiding an animal; ■ Place a continuous metal barrier sheet under the rope barriers, especially centreof-the-road barriers, such as those being installed under steel Armco barriers, to prevent animals crossing; ■ Collect truck-created debris, such as tyre chunks, barrier damage debris, and dead animals, more frequently.

■ Alternatively, centre-of-the-road wire rope barriers should be removed, in favour of a more suitable solution to the problem of head-on collisions, which can happen on most other roads.

14 projects funded ■ Murrindindi Shire Council is receiving $1.083 million in funding to deliver 14 priority projects as part of the Australian Government's 'Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

“We will be replacing cricket nets at the Kinglake Memorial Reserve with new and safer nets that don't have exposed poles with the potential for cricket balls to ricochet,” said Cr Eric Lording.

“In preparation for the opening of the summer pool season, we're going to be upgrading the pumps at the Alexandra Swimming Pool.

“Pending an easing of COVID-19 restrictions, we anticipate this year's pool season to be as busy as ever and we don't want the pumps to let us down.

“Families in Yea will be delighted to see the final piece of playground equipment (a spinner) installed at the Yea Railway Reserve Playground, which will complete the Master Plan for that area.

“Almost half of the projects involve road and footpath improvements or safety and accessibility upgrades.

“Council is disappointed in the circulation of baseless accusations alleging a lack of action on this issue when that is so clearly not the case,” Cr Clarke said.

Improvements at Eildon ■ Members of the public have made suggestions to Murrindindi Shire Council about how its Eildon Precinct Plan can be improved.

Suggestions have included: ■ Lighting along central pathways ■ Replacement trees following removal of 20 pine trees ■ Additional seating, litter bins and drinking fountains The final draft Plan was made available for public exhibition between August 6-27.

“This project aligns with the strategic direction contained within the Recreation and Open Space Strategy 2018-2028, the Eildon Structure Plan 2016, and the Lake Eildon Masterplan,” says a report to Council due to be delivered to tonight’s Shire meeting.

“Investment in recreational ventures has been highlighted as an important factor in stimulating the local economy.” Total budget for the project is $4.9 million. “Given the scale of the project, delivery is likely to be staged if significant external grant funding cannot be obtained to support the full program. This staged approach to project delivery will need to be carefully communicated with the community to manage community expectations.

■ There passed away at her daughter's residence, Bendigo, on August 18th, one who deserves more than a passing notice. I allude to the late Christina Stewart, who, with her first husband, the late John McDonald, arrived on the Plenty in the year 1851. They, with several other Scotch families, came to the colony under engagement to Captain McPherson, who at that time was an extensive squatter in the valley of the Plenty and out to Arthur's Creek. Mrs Stewart, many years ago, some time after her first husband’s death, married Mr Cornelius Stewart, who is still living. Shortly after the deceased arrived in this district the bush- fires swept the countryside destroying sheep, as well as leaving the country desolate. Mrs Stewart and her first husband then took a situation with the well-known and highly respected Frank Owens, where for some time they assisted in dairying.

Dindi Doings Projects underway

■ Cr Eric Lording has outlined a number of projects being undertaken by Murrindindi Shire Council.

“In Alexandra we're extending the footpath along Bayley St and improving various crossing points to allow people with a disability to navigate the town safely,” Cr Lording said.

“In Kinglake West we're installing new footpaths along Watsons Rd from Kelly Court to Whittlesea-Kinglake Rd. “In Buxton, we're installing lighting on the footpaths of the Buxton Reserve to help people feel safer when going for a walk in the Reserve after dark.

“The Tumbling Waters Toilet Block in Thornton will be undergoing a significant makeover, including the renewal of plumbing fixtures, rendering, lighting, sinks and flooring.

“We're going to set up seating between the Yea Pioneer Reserve and Pelissier St to provide an area for residents to stop and rest on their way into town,” Cr Lording said.

You beauty, Marysville ■ The Marysville Garden Beautification Committee has won $6000 in funding from the Murrindindi Shire Community Grants Program.

The grant will be used to establish and plant new raised garden beds ad enhance an existing garden bed near MIRA in Murchison St. The project auspice is the Triangle Arts Group Inc.

$1.9 million deficit ■ Murrindindi Shire Council delivered a $1,923,994 deficit in the 2019-20 financial year instead of the budgeted $795,735 surplus.

The operating deficit posted for the financial year of $761,994 was largely the result of increased revenue of $795,735 and increased expenses of $2.72 million.

Claude in the chair ■ Claude Baxter is set to be re-appointed as ‘Chairperson’of the Audit and Risk Committee of Murrindindi Shire Council for the 2020-21 financial year.

Mr Baxter served as Chair for the former Audit and Risk Advisory Committee for the 2019-20 financial year.

Cash for Optair ■ A cash grant of $20,000 has been given to Optair Eyecare by Murrindindi Shire Council for the purchase of a OPTOS Ultra Wide Retinal Scanner.

The grant, approved by Council officers under delegation, helped with the purchase of technology for detecting sight reducing retinal conditions such as Macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetes and other retinal eye diseases.

“The project also delivers significant community benefit, in particular reduding the requirement fro loacls to travel to Melbourne to receive optical investigations,” says a report to Councillors.

$600 for ASC dux

■ Alexandra Secondary College Parents and Friends Committee has successfully applied for a $600 grant from Murrindindi Shire Council in connection with the sponsorship of the ASC 2020 dux student.

Money for Shed ■ The Alexandra Community Shed/Eildon and District Woodworkers Guild Inc will be able to proceed with a kitchen fit-out after securing $4000 of the $4600 funding it wanted from Murrindindi Shire Council.

The kitchenette fit-out at the Community Shed will enavle the group to cater for their events and for themselves from their own facility.

The Taungurung Land and Waters Council is now using the main kitchen at the facility, says a report to Councillors.

Reclassify Ranges as regional ■ Yarra Ranges Council is again urging the State Government to reclassify non-urban areas in the Shire as regional, with rural areas caught up in the metropolitan Melbourne lockdown.

Councillors last week endorsed an urgent motion brought forward by Cr Jim Child, calling on the Andrews Government to reclassify the Ryrie and O’Shannassy Wards – and rural communities in the Chandler Ward - as regional and therefore be excluded from Stage 4 COVID-19 restrictions.

Ryrie Ward Councillor Fiona McAllister said that regional areas were caught up in the metropolitan Melbourne region’s lockdown because of Yarra Ranges’ status as an interface Council.

“We have one of the most unique Council areas in the state, due to our mix of urban areas, the hills in the Dandenong Ranges and the regional towns in the Yarra Valley, and this is something we’re proud of,” Cr McAllister said.

“Unfortunately, it also means that our regional areas have been unfairly swept into the metropolitan classification for COVID-19 restrictions.”

O’Shannassy Ward Councillor, Jim Child, said that while the Stage 4 restrictions were suitable for urban areas, they didn’t suit outer regions like the Upper Yarra.

Boost for family services ■ Families and children in Mitchell Shire will soon have better access to community services and early education in Kilmore and Wallan with $1.9 million from the Growing Suburbs Fund announced by the Victorian Government this month.

Mitchell Shire Council will develop a new community hub at the former Killara Child Care Centre in Wallan thanks to the $850,000 from the State Government.

A planned $3.3 million expansion of Kilmore’s Marie Williams Kindergarten into a Family and Children’s Centre is also a step closer thanks to $1.1 million funding.

Local Government Minister Shaun Leane, Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green, and Northern Victoria MLC Jaclyn Symes announced the V contribution of $1.9 million for the two projects.

● Jaclyn Symes MLC Wallan Community Services Hub will create a single integrated cohesive community facility to support community access to services and programs focused on early intervention and prevention.

Expansion of Marie Williams Kindergarten in Kilmore will provide much-needed space for maternal and child health and early learning services, increasing numbers for

“This funding announcement comes at a time when families in Mitchell Shire are planning for the future after a disruptive 2020 due to COVID19,” said Mayor Cr David Lowe.

“The new facilities will mean our community can access modern, purpose-built services now and in the future as we continue to grow.

“The family and children’s centre expansion will help us continue to meet demand from a growing community for families to access to maternal and child health and early learning services.

“It will also mean those services can be provided in a more contemporary space that suits modern practices for service delivery.

“The funding for the Wallan Community Services Hub is also great news,” said Cr Lowe

Competition at Mitchell ■ A competition to share the love for Mitchell Shire is helping to keep spirits high and support businesses amid Stage 3 COVID-19 restrictions, says a Council representative.

The MyMitchell MyHomecompetition allows locals to share the love by telling about the businesses they love or miss during this time, and by shining a light on some of the great attractions and hidden gems within Mitchell.

Aimed at local social media users, the competition will run for three weeks on the Discover Mitchell Instagram and Facebook pages with challenge prompts released regularly.

“It has been a tough time for our community and for businesses during the pandemic,” said Cr David Lowe, Mitchell Shire Mayor.

“We hope this competition will bring joy and a sense of fun to the locals who are stuck at home as we start to look forward to being soon able to get out more soon. ““Supporting our local businesses will be a key to our recovery and this competition is also an important part of that process by showing locals what is available and using that local knowledge to help people from other parts of Victoria to discover what Mitchell is has to offer,” Cr Lowe said.

Regional Rounds Reedy Creek works

■ “Reedy Creek residents may have noticed some fuel reduction works along the length of Reedy Creek Rd and within an identified area across from the local CFA station, to help reduce the overall bushfire risk,” said a Mitchell Shire statement this month.

“These works have now been completed and the outcome will be beneficial to Reedy Creek residents in the upcoming fire season.

“Council has been working on this project in partnership with a number of agencies including Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, Country Fire Authority, Goulburn Broken Catchment Management Authority, Taungurung Land and Waters Council and Dabyminga Landcare Group.

“Reedy Creek Rd is rated high in terms of bushfire risk to the community. The completion of these works has reduced the overall roadside fuel levels in the area from extreme to high and will make it easier to maintain the roadside into the future.

“The project complements the work by the Dabyminga Landcare Group along Reedy Creek to keep weeds and fuel loads managed to a reasonable level,” said the Mitchell Council representative.

Drive-thru tests ■ Health authorities held a drive-through and walk-up COVID-19 testing station at The Stables Shopping Centre in Mill Park last week.

$6000 for youth ■ Marysville Triangle Youth Inc has achieved a $6000 grant through the Murrindindi Shire Community Planning Grants Program. An application for $7500 had been made.

“This grant will be used to complete some key works at the Marysville Youth Space to satisfy occupancy so the building can be utilised by local young people, youth groups and other community groups.

“This will see a nine-year dream come to fruition. Works include completing the bathrooms and establishing a disabled carpark,” says a Murrindindi Council report.

Volunteers wanted ■ Nillumbik residents looking for a way to support others in othe community, improve their local environment or get involved in an exciting youth project are encouraged to consider their Shire Council’s current volunteering opportunities.

These roles offer people of all ages the opportunity to connect with members of their local community – an ideal antidote to COVID-19 restrictions which have left many feeling isolated.

Both the ‘Be Connected’ Digital Mentor and FReeZA Committee Member roles can be conducted online and are not affected by any COVID-19 restrictions.

The Environmental Works Teamand L2P Mentors are face-to-face roles which will commence once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so, but we would love to have a team of volunteers ready to call upon when we can.

Sparkling trip from central Victoria ■ At winemaking college one of my lecturers taught me that sparkling shiraz, along with Rutherglen muscat and aged Hunter Valley semillon, constituted a uniqueAustralian wine style.

It signified the beginning of a love affair with red fizz, one that culminated, I guess, when I took a glass of sparkling shiraz into a cemetary at central Victoria's Great Western to salute the graves of the founders of the style.

Seppelts, at its Great Western winery, may well have invented sparkling shiraz - or 'sparkling burgundy' to use its original title - but these days another central Victorian winemaker, Andrew Koerner, of Blue Pyrenees Estate, has definitely joined the fray and seems to have produced the goods.

And please don't look askance at the NV tag on the wines. I know that we look for what is the vintage of our table wines but the extensive use of aged reserve wine is normal in the production of fizz in Champagne and most houses value their NV offering as highly as their rare vintage wines.

And so they should, both there and here.

Victorian Arts Design Week Melbourne Design Week, Australia'spremier event showcasing local and international design returns in 2021 and expressions of interest are now open to participate on the Victoria-wide 11-day program of talks, tours, workshops, launches and exhibitions.

In 2021, Melbourne Design Week explores the theme 'Design the world you want'.

Participants will consider how the design community can work together to create a better, healthier future for the planet and its inhabitants.

In line with the program's multi-disciplinary and diverse approach, expressions of interest for the 2021 program are open to a wide range of practitioners including designers, galleries, educators, innovators and industry.

An initiative of the Victorian Government and delivered by the National Gallery of Victoria. The inaugural Melbourne Design Week was launched in 2017.

The Victorian Government has also renewed its presenting partnership with the National Gallery of Victoria for another four years, cementing Melbourne Design Week as key event on the cultural calendar for years to come.

The Victorian Design Challenge returns, offering a share of over $25,000 in prizes for students and professional designers to develop inventive solutions to the 2021 brief of making more age-friendly communities.

In 2021 Melbourne Design Week also expands its digital presence with online exhibition tours, talks and video.

Melbourne Design Week will run Victoria-wide from Friday March 26 - Monday April 5. 2021. Expressions of interest to participate in the 2021 program will be from Friday September 4 - Friday October 9, 2020.

Observations The Story Behind The Letter

■ In 1984 my aunt, Zoe Caldwell, came to Melbourne with her husband, Broadway producer Robert Whitehead and their two children, Sam and Charlie.

She opened the new Playhouse Theatre at the Victorian Arts Centre with the Robinson Jeffers's adaptation of Euripides' Medea.

Robert directed this Melbourne Theatre Company production. At that time he was also producing Arthur Miller's Broadway show, Death of a Salesman, starring Dustin Hoffmann.

While in Melbourne, the family received a letter from their old friend and Robert's tennis partner, Kate Hepburn.

She told Robert not to worry about being away from New York. She was pleased that things were going well with Medea and suggested they go to Sherbrooke Forest in the Dandenong Ranges to see the lyrebird and also to the Great Barrier Reef, which, she said, are all much more fun than Dustin Hoffmann.

I drove my uncle Robert and young cousins to Sherbrooke Forest for a picnic but we didn't see a lyrebird that day.

When Zoe left Melbourne she gave me Kate Hepburn's handwritten letter as a momento but I puzzled over why Kate had suggested they visit Sherbrooke which led me to research the background. This is the story behind the letter.

In 1955, when in Australia on tour with the Old Vic theatre company, Katharine Hepburn visited the Dandenongs several times during the tour in Melbourne.

She spent many hours watching the birds in the company of a Sherbrooke Forest local, a young boy, who told her of their habits and where to find them.

She took Robert Helpmann to Sherbrooke Forest to see the lyrebird's mating dance on its mound.

Some time after, Helpmann claimed to have had a dream in which Hepburn was seen dancing naked on a mound surrounded by lyrebirds.

The dream heightened his fascination for the bird's mating dance and was the impetus for his choreography of The Display, his first production for the Australian Ballet and performed in 1964.

The story of The Display centred around a bush picnic in which a bunch of young footballers start drinking and fight over a girl.

She is raped and left lying exhausted on the ground. This dramatic ballet opens with the dance of a lyrebird behind gauze and the bird reappears in the final scene dancing around the girl with its tail fully displayed until he holds her in his fanned plumage.

Helpmann engaged Sidney Nolan for set design and Carlton Football Club coach, Ron Barassi, to coach the dancers' football moves.

Through Katharine's captivation with the lyrebird and Helpmann's subsequent dream the ballet was created. Helpmann dedicated the ballet to Katharine. I was inspired to write a poem titled The Display which tells the story of this creation.

■ Following the Victorian Premier’s COVID roadmap announcement, the Board of the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz and Blues confirms the 2020 festival will proceed as a streamed online event from Friday, October 30 to Sunday, November 1.

In recent months the festival had developed a mix of both in person and online presentation options. Whilst the road map provides a better understanding of the way forward, it also presents challenges, so in light of the restrictions within the announcement, it is not feasible to proceed with live audience events this year. n 2019, the Board and the artistic team had decided on an all-Australian program as fitting to celebrate the anniversary festival.

The full program and streaming details will be announced on Monday, September 28.

America remembers 9/11

■ Hi everyone, from my suite at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites comes this week's news.

Patriot Day 2020

■ Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11 to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11.

On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House and all United States government buildings in the whole world.

The flag should be flown at half-staff as a mark of respect to those who died on September 11, 2001. Many people observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM (Eastern Daylight Time).

This marks the time that the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities, particularly in the areas directly affected by the attacks, hold special church services or prayer meetings.

People who personally experienced the events in 2001 or lost loved ones in them, may lay flowers or visit memorials.

● The Beverly Hills Fire Department remembers the lost first responders and to support the 9/11 remembrance was Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites Managing Director, Alan Johnson.

The King Under Attack ■ Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion was defaced with graffiti reading ‘Black Lives Matter’, ‘Defund MPD’ referring to the Memphis Police Department and ‘Eat the Rich’, leaving the historic home with around $150,000 in damage.

The mansion, which appears on the National Register of Historic Places, is now a museum dedicated to the life of Elvis Presley, who built the home and owned until he died in 1977.

Elvis's daughter, Lisa Marie Presley, is now the owner and caretaker of the mansion, which recently underwent an extensive renovation.

Memphis, Tennessee, where Graceland is located, like many major cities, has seen its share of unrest in the wake of George Floyd's death while in the custody of the Minneapolis Police Department and also like many major cities, Memphis has experienced a dramatic rise in crime this summer.

According to USA Today, Memphis is one of the primary targets of Operation Legend, which seeks to bolster urban police departments with specialty agents of the federal government agents of the FBI, the DEA, and the ATF. Memphis received a deployment of 40 federal agents back in July, in Operation Legend's second wave.

The unrest turned destructive this week when rioters targeted Graceland and the adjoining Levitt Stadium, where Elvis Presley gave his first paid concert.

"The walls outside of Graceland in Memphis, Tenn., were tagged with graffiti by vandals, with phrases like 'BLM' and 'No Justice No Peace,'" Fox News reported.

"Fox 13 reporter Shelia O'Connor tweeted out photographs of the damaged walls, which included messages about the death of Breonna Taylor who was killed in Louisville while police were serving a no-knock warrant on her home."

Peaceful protests OK ■ Americans across racial lines remain overwhelmingly opposed to violent protest to "improve the situation of black Americans with 73 per cent of respondents indicating it tends to "hurt" that cause, according to a new Gallup poll just released. The poll found a higher percentage of white Americans opposed violent protest (79 per cent) than black Americans (59 per cfent). Both groups overwhelming agree that nonviolent protest helps blacks, with 78 per cent of whites supporting it and 72 per cent of blacks. Gallup based data on June 8-July 24 survey of US adults. The polling company noted that "Since Gallup last polled on this subject in 1988, there have been meaningful increases in the percentages of Americans saying that nonviolent protest, violent protest and economic boycotts, in particular, can help. Opinions on the effectiveness of legal action are little changed."

Robin’s final days

■ Robin Williams' self-inflicted death on Aug. 11, 2014, at the age of 63 shocked the world, not only because few knew that the acclaimed actor had been suffering in any way, but because despite his history of substance-abuse problems, his effusive, uninhibited, hyperactive spirit was so joyous and infectious that it simply didn't gibe with suicide.

With no concrete explanation for why he'd taken his own life, the media filled in the gaps with wild speculation about depression, drugs, and financial woes. None of those guesses, however, did anything to alleviate the sheer mystery of it all. It was simply incomprehensible to fans, friends and family.

And, as Robin's Wish makes clear, it also didn't make sense to Williams himself.

Tylor Norwood's new documentary is an intimate look at the final days of the Hollywood star, whose success as both a comedian and a dramatic actor made him one of his era's most beloved headliners. Considering that focus, it's far from a comprehensive non-fiction biopic; those looking for copious movie clips, or a chronological timeline of his professional and personal ups and downs, will have to look elsewhere. Yet while that narrow perspective does much to hamper its impact, it nonetheless achieves its limited primary goal: bringing to light the fact that, rather than a man who killed himself simply out of unhappiness or addiction, Williams was a victim of a little-known condition that left him mentally and physically compromised, unsure of himself, and terrifyingly adrift.

■ More than half of all storefronts in San Francisco are no longer in business, according to the survey by the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. "The survey showed only 46 per cent of storefront businesses in San Francisco that were open at the beginning of the pandemic are still operating," said Jay Cheng, spokesman of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce. That means 1200 stores are still open, while about 1300 have closed, Cheng said. "There's a lot of reasons for that. If you're a fitness studio, you can't open because of the pandemic. If you're a retail space, you could open, but you might have decided that there isn't enough foot traffic or enough customer base to make that worthwhile to reopen. The outbreak of the coronavirus in January and implementation of lockdown orders in March forced couples to manage a plethora of new challenges.

The combination of quarantine life, wavering finances, mounting unemployment rates, illnesses, deaths of loved ones, mental illness and child care has led Americans lawyers to predict a record number of divorce filings.

■ There were two major dancing teams in Hollywood films - Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and then Marge and Gower Champion.

Marge and Gower appeared in MGM musical films during the 1950s.

Marge was born, Marjorie Celeste Belcher, in Los Angeles, California, in 1919. She began dancing and teaching at an early age.

In 1935 Marge was hired by the Walt Disney Studios to be a live action model for Snow White in the animated feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

In later years Marge also became a model for The Blue Fairy in Pinocchio and the Dancing Hippo in Fantasia.

In 1937 Marge married Art Babbitt from the Disney Studios but the marriage only lasted for three years.

Gower Champion was born in 1919 and worked as a dancer on Broadway prior to World War II in which he served as a member of the US Coast Guard.

After the war he resumed his career and met Marge, who became his dancing partner.

They married in 1947 and became popular through their marvelous performances in the MGM remake of Showboat in 1951.

Their song, Life upon the Wicked Stage, was a standout in the film. This led to other roles as a singing dance team in films such as Mr Music, Jupiter's Darling and Three for the Show.

Whatever Happened To ...

Marge Champion

By Kevin Trask of FM of 3AW 3AW and 96.5 Inner FM They played the lead roles in Give a Girl a Break and co-starred with Debbie Reynolds.

MGM had plans to use Marge and Gower in remakes of the old Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers RKO films.

This only happened once when Roberta was remade under the title of Lovely to Look At. They starred in their own television series The Marge and Gower Champion Show in 1957.

They had two children together but sadly, their son Blake was killed in a car crash at the age of 25.

Gower became a very successful Broadway director and won eight Tony Awards in his career.

as The Swimmer with Burt Lancaster, and The Party with Peter Sellers. Marge continued to work on Broadway after her marriage to Gower ended in 1973. Four years later she married the director Boris Segal. In 2001 Marge starred in a revival of Stephen Sondheim's Follies and sang four songs in the production at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway.

Sadly, Gower Champion passed away on the opening night of a stage production on Broadway in 1980. Gower had choreographed 42nd Street and after numerous curtain calls the producer David Merrick announced to the cast and audience the sad news that Gower had died that afternoon.

Marge Champion was a member of the nominating committee for the Tony Awards on Broadway from 1991-98 judging all the shows. These days Marge Champion is 98 and lives in New York.

Will we ever see this type of singing and dancing team in films in the future? Who knows - my guess is probably not.

After touring Australia, Ian quit the band and went to live and work in California. He took a day job as a computer programmer, combined with session work playing guitar. Next step was as a motivational speaker prior to his untimely death this month, aged 62.

■ Ten has announced Tristan McManus is to be the new co-host of Studio 10 alongside Sarah Harris.

Who is Tristan McManus? His main claim to fame is as a judge on Dancing With The Stars. Trained as a professional dancer he is said to have an engaging personality and should interact well with the rest of the regulars on the morning show. Time will tell.

Originally intended for theatres, this latest Disney live-action reimagining of the 1998 animated Oscar nominated film of the same name, based on the Chinese folklore "The Ballad of Mulan," is a major step up from some of the more recent Disney's live action efforts, and even though it doesn't quite reach the more richly acceptable heights of its animated predecessor, this is still nonetheless a sweeping coming-of-age tale that is both epic and at times intoxicating with its finely tuned emotional intimacy, energetic drive and beautifully textured wide canvas steeped in Chinese mythology and martial arts warfare.

Directed by Niki Caro, whose previous credits include the superb "Whale Rider" 2002 and more recently "The Zookeeper's Wife" (2017), the breathtaking cast kicks off an emotionally sensitive yet fiercely captivating performance by Yifei Liu as Mulan, along with a host well established and revered Chinese super-stars that includes Jason Scott Lee (Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story/1993) as the villain, Donnie Yen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story/2016) as the Commander, Jet Li (Hero/2002) as the Emperor and the legendary Gong Li (Memoirs of a Geisha/2005) as the evil witch.

Filmed with breathtaking results in China and New Zealand, the costume and set design of the period are nothing less than spellbinding, a beautifully woven tapestry of deeply rich colour palates that are a feast for the eye, all-in-all culminating in a simplistic yet exciting mythological tale driven by a big heart, a well crafted effort that balances history, humour, romance, drama and action effectively, and with now two versions to chose from, a classic story that will no doubt enthrall young and old for generations to come.

Stars: **½ Review: A ragtag quartet of teenage miscreants are given one last chance to turn their lives around by completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award trek across the Scottish highlands, but once they are dropped in the middle of nowhere, they soon realize they aren't as alone as they think, as they are being stalked by wealthy aristocrats who intend to hunt and kill them for sport.

Wildly wacky low budget hip-hop inspired absurdist comedy-horror is a mixed bag of craziness evocative of the classic thriller "The Most Dangerous Game" (1932) on acid, a slapstick "Trainspotting" meets "Deliverance" meets "The League of Gentlemen" wannabe, but therein lies its charm, an off-the-wall, naively driven and passionate stoner journey that has more to offer than not.

The ragtag misfits include Viraj Juneja as DJ Beatroot, along with Lewis Gribben, Samuel Bottomley and Rian Gordon, who all deliver performances with delightful results, along with Kate Dickie as Police Sgt Morag and veteran Scottish actor James Cosmo (Braveheart/ Trainspotting) as the farmer, and a welcome addition to the cast by veteran comic and actor Eddie Izzard as the eccentric and mysterious huntsman "The Duke" and Georgie Glen as "The Duchess."

Filmed with breathtaking beauty in the beautiful highlands of Scotland, which is not difficult to achieve, the material may be paper thin, scattered and repetitive, but there are moments of side-splitting gags and even poignancy, and-all-in-all, this is a smart(ish), dumb, endearing, stupid, psychedelic, repulsive and clichéd adventure that, for better or worse, is a twisted romp across the Scottish highlands, so go at your own risk.

Rourke’s Reviews Mulan ■ (PG). 115 minutes. Now streaming on Disney+.

After the execrable CGI remake of The Lion King in 2019, I had little expectations for Disney's live-action redux of their 1998 animated film Mulan, so it was nice to be pleasantly surprised by the resultant film which, while flawed, proves to be quite entertaining.

The plot is basically the same Mulan (Yifei Liu), the eldest daughter of war veteran Zhou (Tzi Ma), secretly disguises herself as a man to take the place of her father, who along with thousands of other men, have been called up by the Emperor (Jet Li) to help fight against invading Rouran warriors, led by Bori Khan (Jason Scott Lee).

Khan is aided by a witch, Xianniang (Gong Li), who also has her own agenda.

Mulan 2020 is a strikingly crafted endeavour, with superb cinematography, costume and production design, and the $250 million production is confidently handled

by Niki Caro (Whale Rider), who gives the story a colourful, fablelike glow.

The script (credited to four writers) is on the clunky side, turning Mulan's inner strength into something more akin to Jedi powers, while of course historical accuracy is left far behind.

What hurts this latest iteration the most is a missing sense of humour, replaced by an earnestness that sometimes needlessly weighs the film down.

The animated film (one of my favourite Disney titles) managed to combine drama and comedy to superb effect.

Liu is likeable as Mulan (and was actually up for the same part in the 2009 Chinese film, which eventually went toZhao Wei); Gong Li makes the most of her limited screen time; Lee is okay as the villain, while Yen is sadly wasted in a thankless supporting role.

Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 ■ (M). 119 minutes. Now available on R3 DVD. Based on the best-selling book

by Cho Nam-joo, this highly anticipated big screen adaptation proves to be a mixed blessing, bringing important subject matter to light, while also not quite delivering the genuinely emotional gut-punch its source material did.

Jung Yu-mi plays the title character, a 30-something housewife and mother who has given up a successful career to devote all her time to husband Dea-hyeon (Gong Yoo) and daughter Ah-young, who is

now two years old. Exhausted and under-appreciated, Kim's frustration turns into something more worrying when she briefly takes on the persona of her mother at Deahyeon's family's house during a Lunar New Year visit.

Consulting a psychiatrist, Deahyeon wants to understand his wife's increasing mood swings, but Kim's behaviour comes from a societal patriarchal structure that has crushed many a woman's dream and self-worth. The book is an excellent, matter-of-fact account of generational, systemic gender inequality, told in a deceptively simple style that actually creates multiple layers, showing a problem that is still firmly entrenched in society (it's fascinating to note that Korean actresses and singers who liked and supported the book were continuously attacked online).

Cho's vivid, affecting details, chronicling decades of genderbased injustice, is understandably condensed for its movie incarnation, but for me, too much was excised (some flashbacks appear without context), and the book's critical tone is softened by shifting some of the focus onto Dea-hyeon and his attempts to 'fix' Kim's problem, and along with the entire third act being completely altered, ultimately mutes the film's impact and the book's point (the final pages were a particular kick in the teeth).

Actor Kim Do-young (All About My Wife) makes her directorial (and screenwriting) debut, and while admirably staying away from melodrama, struggles to fluidly thread the long-term pieces together (there are a couple of nice stylistic touches though), jettisoning not only crucial moments in Kim's life, but also those of her mother and sister.

Kim Do-young does make sure however that she gets strong performances from her cast.

Jung, so good in films such as My Dear Desperado, Psychokinesis, The Table, and of course the blockbuster Train To Busan, is outstanding here, making us care for Kim and her state-of-mind.

While it may not be up there with Jeon Do-yeon's phenomenal turn in the moving Birthday, this is still a memorable performance.

Yoo (The Age Of Shadows) offers solid support, while praise must also go to Kim Mi-kyung and Park Sung-yeon, as Kim Ji-young's mother and Team Leader respectively. There are strong moments in Kim Ji-young, Born 1982, as well as a terrific central performance, and while the subject contained within needs to be fully revealed and examined, an important, insightful and heartfelt book has become an interesting film that doesn't reach the same provocative, powerful heights.

Herbie’s Maryborough double ■ Maryborough commenced the week on Monday September 7 and Lexton reinsman James Herbertson without doubt produced the "drive of the day" when successful aboard the Craig Demmler (Parwan) trained Courage Under Fire-Allfouru filly Burnfouru in the Goodnight The Fox Shiraz 3Y0 Fillies over 1609 metres restricted to the fairer sex.

Settling three back in the running line from gate three as Keilah (gate four) led. Moving to be one/one in the final circuit when La La Bron ahead of her dropped out sharply, Burnfouru in a winning move switched down to trail the leader approaching the home turn using the sprint lane and bloused Keilah by a half head, with the favourite Dasha The Great which raced exposed, weakening slightly over the concluding stages to finish third 2.3 metres away. The mile rate 1-56.7.

■ Herbie chalked up a double after partnering the AJ & Beau Tindale trained consistent 5Y0 Elsu-Indie Jazz gelding Mended to land the 2190 metre TAB Long May We Play Pace.

Beginning fast from gate five Mended was unable to head off Good Guy Mack (gate three) leaving him exposed. Gaining cover mid-race when Fowsands vacated the one/two spot to park outside the pacemaker, Mended enjoyed a little breather. Off and running three wide in the final circuit, Mended in a punishing finish scored by a head from Good Guy Mack returning a mile rate of 2-00.3.Aviero (one/two) was third 2 mtres away.

■ Naneenna part-owner/trainer Col Godden has been having a terrific run of late with his small team and 4Y0 Jet Laag-Heavenly Pocket entire Black Jack Orion (gate six) was a strong victor of the 2190 metre Maryborough School House Village Maiden Pace in a mile rate of 200.4. Driven by Josh Duggan, Jet Black Orion commenced a forward move three wide from five back in the running line at the bell, being accommodated in the last lap by The Knight Star three back which eased three wide to go in sight of the leader Be A Good Scout. Again moving three wide into the final bend, Black Jet Orion defied a late challenge from Imawingate (one/one) to score by 1.6 metres. Awesome Reactor was third from mid-field 4.6 metres back after shifting down to the sprint lane on turning. Josh and partner Monique (Burnett) are looking forward to the birth of their first child in December.

■ Charlton's Greg Norman snared the Jester Event Services Pace over 1690 metres with Fiftyshadesofhay which produced an eye catching second at Maryborough a week earlier.

With Kerryn Manning in the sulky, Fiftyshadesofhay, a 4Y0 Badlands HanoverSupreme Classie mare starting from the extreme draw settled at the tail of the field before being set alight racing for the bell to lead for the final circuit.

Going powerfully approaching the home turn, Fiftyshadesofhay defied all challengers to register a 7.4 mere margin in 1-56.4 over Inaugurate (one three - one/one home turn), with Smile Lyle coming from last to finish third 1.1 metres away.

■ Bendigo duo Maddy Ray and Haydon Gray's 4Y0 Majestic Son-Galleons Bliss gelding Rigondeaux first up since May was a brilliant winner of the Haras Des Trotteurs Trotters Mobile over 2190 metres.

Driven by Tatura'sAbbey Turnbull taking a concession, Rigondeaux spent most of the race at the rear after starting from the extreme draw as David Murphy's Fox Force Five led.

Giving away a big start approaching the home turn, Rigondeaux must have been five and six wide on the final bend before motoring home at 100 miles an hour to score by a half head in a thrilling finish from Beefour Bacardi (one/one three wide last lap) in a rate of 2-02.3. Rank outsider Lord Lohki (one/three) was an eye catching third a head away.

■ The Big Yin (Chris Alford) led throughout from the pole to run out a 4.1 metre victor in a mile rate of 1-58 over Midnight Calm which trailed, with a death-seating Radiant Rose holding down third 10.9 metres away.

First for 15 months

■ Stress Factor raced by long time stable clients John Wilkinson, Gary Dowling and Rob Owen, along with Elizabeth Crews and Bruce and Denise Morrison coming from 20 metres was given a perfect passage by Chris Alford following the hot favourite Full Noise (20m) for the entire race.

Settling four back along the markers trailing Full Noise, then one/one after Full Noise moved to race exposed for the final circuit, Stress Factor was poised to pounce on straightening and that he did, scoring by a metre in a rate of 203.9. Iron mare Fear Not was third 5.3 metres away in third place after gaining inside runs after trailing the two favourites. It was Stress Factor's first victory since May 2019.

Latest on Caulfield Guineas ■ Flemington trainer Danny O'Brien is looking to add another big trophy to his mantel piece with his good three-year old, Flying Award, in the Caulfield Guineas to be run on October 10.

The three year-old is by his Cox Plate winner, Shamus Award, out of the New Zealand bred mare, Flying Dansino.

The colt has impressed good judges with his tenacity in his runs, having now raced fives times for a win and two seconds, all in top company.

After his success in last year's Melbourne Cup with Vow and Declare, and Russian Camelot in the South Australian Derby, he is on the top of the world.

In the McNeil Stakes at Caulfield he came off the pace to flash home for a good second behind, Immortal Love, with the Blue Diamond Stakes winner, Tagaloa, in third spot.

At present he is around the $ 7 mark, and represents good value at that price.

On the next line is the smart Sydney youngster, Mamaragan, who ran third in the Golden Slipper.

Top Sydney jockey, Nash Rawiller, is a big rap for the three-year old, and claims he is one of the best going around.

His third in the Slipper was a big run behind Farnan, trained byGai Waterhouse and Andrew Bott.

At his most recent run, he finished third behind the flying youngster, Anders, in the San Domenico, after the winner ran them ragged over the 1100 metres, in a tick outside the race record, run some 13 years ago.

It was no disgrace in finishing third to one of the fastest horses in Australia.

Although there were only six runners in the San Domenico, his run was good.

Another promising type, Peltzer, from the Gerald Ryan camp, was a good second, although beaten easily, while Doubtland from the Hawkes stables unbeaten in two starts was never in it, but is still a smart young galloper.

Yet another type from the powerful Ciaron Maher-David Eustace camp, highly ndelighted with the way Anders is going is happy with another of their charges in, Holyfield who hit form with a vengeance in the Ming Dynasty at Rosehill leading all the way over 1400 metres.

If he can produce a run like that again, he will take some catching, but it's hard to run a strong 1600 metres at Caulfield, when leading in a class field.
