■ Detectives have charged a Truganina man following their investigation into a fatal collision in Epping last year. It is alleged a stabilizer arm attached to an articulated trailer had not been retracted when it struck an oncoming garbage truck at the intersection of Cooper St and Miller St. The driver of the garbage truck, a 51-year-old Mill Park man, died at the scene.

A confidential meeting of Whittlesea City Council, closed to the public, was held on Monday (Sept. 7) as this edition of The Local Press went to press. The meeting was held at 11.30am on Monday to agree on the terms of the contract for new Chief Executive Officer Craig Lloyd. An announcement was made at 12 Noon by Murrindindi and Whittlesea Councils.

Murrindindi Shire Council had nothing to say this week. There were no media releases issued at press time.

This ute was stolen from good people at Hamiltons Rd, Yea, late last week. It is believed that have been the vehicle that was involved in two fuel ‘drive-offs’ at Thomastown and Laverton. A man and a woman were arrested following a pursuit in Epping on Friday night. Local Police units were assisted by the Dog Squad and Air Wing who tracked the stolen Holden Colorado ute for over half an hour. Police deployed a tyre deflation device, but the driver reportedly continued on a rim. The driver allegedly pulled into a service station on High Street around 11.20pm and the female passenger ran from the car. It is alleged she attempted to carjack a nearby driver who was sitting in their vehicle, before police intervened and arrested her.

The male driver reversed into a police car before two other police cars moved in to prevent the vehicle from absconding. The male was arrested after OC spray was deployed. Three police cars were damaged in the incident, and one police member suffered a minor injury during the arrest. A 32-year-old man and 24year-old woman were arrested.

The Victorian Labor State Government is unfairly treating the state’s agriculture sector, Eildon MLA Cindy McLish told Parliament last week.

“The current levels of restrictions are too harsh for the rural industries, and the growing season is underway. Others have said, permitting agriculture, farming and horticulture with COVID-safe work practices must continue, and they are saying that even though they are in a local government area under stage 4, such as in the Yarra Ranges, there are lots and lots of rural areas there that practise farming and horticulture.”

Impact on country people ■ The heavy impact of Coronavirus, and the Victorian State Government handling of restrictions on country people was raised in State Parliament last week by Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish.

“For country Victoria things have been relatively COVID-free for some time,” Ms McLeish told the Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

“I know that at Easter people were exceptionally worried about cross-infection, and they still are because they see a lot of the things that the government have put in place have not quite worked.

“There has been a sieve around the city rather than a hard border and people have been very easily able to move between one and two without being checked.

“Certainly with V/Line, for example, for a long time people were able to move far too freely.

“And they are extremely worried at the same time that the longer people stay away the more regional tourism suffers, and when that bounce comes we need those businesses to thrive.”

Ms McLeish said that after the hotel quarantine - “the disaster on disaster”- the State Government had provided “appalling management”.

■ A decision to allow a planning permit for a cemetery at 265 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road, Kinglake Central, is bein g recommended in an officer report to Murrindindi Shire Councillors tonight (Wed.).

Maureen Jackson Planning has submitted the application for a permit that would allow the cemetery, associated signage, car parking to the satisfaction of the Council, alteration to access to a road in a Road Zone, and the removal of native vegetation (two trees).

The land was purchased by the State Government in 2010 for the purpose of providing a site to enable the replacement of the Kinglake National Park Office and Depot, and the development of the Kinglake Ranges Cultural and Community Facility. No development of the land has occurred since the approval of the amendment.

The land comprises an area of 5.1 hectares which is cleared other than a few scattered mature trees. Road access is available from Blackwood Lane.

The proposal suggests that the site will provide for up to 5350 cremated remains. The total number of burial sites has not been determined.

■ Murrindindi Shire Council will hold an ordinary meeting tonight (Wed.) at 6pm. The proceedings will be live streamed for public viewing.

Families struggle through COVID ■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish told State Parliament that families have struggled through the COVID pandemic.

“Homeschooling - earning remotely - was novel last term.

People thought it was a bit different, thought it was a little bit exciting,” Ms McLeish told the Legislative Assembly.

“They thought, ‘Great, it’s going to end’. They were over it well and truly by the time it ended, and then it started again.

“That was a real kick for so many people, not just for families and students but I know for teachers as well, who had absolutely done so much to extend themselves and be creative.

“Some of them were working at home and delivering from home while they were managing their own schoolchildren, and that cannot have been easy.

■ A planning permit application will go before Murrindindi Shire Council tonight (Wed.) for a cafe at 3 Back Eildon Road Thornton at the site of the former primary school. A Shire officer is recommending to Councillors that the permit be issued.

It is being suggested that plans incorporate relocation of the carpark so it does not encroach by more than 10 per centof the Tree Protection Zone of the Elm tree at the front of the site; that additional details be provided defining the area for the outdoor seating including any tables;and chairs; and there be definition of the location of staff parking.

Objections have been submitted from people at three neighbouring properties.

Flowerdale plan OK ■ It is being suggested to tonight’s Murrindindi Council meeting that a planning permit be issued for group accommodation at a 21hectare property at 86 Moores Rd, Flowerdale. King Parrot Creek is located approximately 200 metres to the east Six cabins are proposed for the site. Some 19 objections were submitted against the proposal. Reasons cited include biosecurity risks and trespassing, potential for wastewater to impact adjoining properties and creeks, visual impacts (the cabins will be visible from adjoining properties), the impacts of organic farming on surrounding properties ability to spray blackberries, potential for increased bushfire risk, traffic Impacts, exclusive for Chinese nationals, and current management of the land.

Lovell backs Wedge

■ Wendy Lovell, MLC for Northern Victoria, has backed the efforts of Nillumbik Mayor Cr Karen Egan and her Council to protect the amenity and landscape values of the Shire’s Green Wedge areas.

Ms Lovell raised the issue with Richard Wynne, State Minister for Planning, in State Parliament last week.

Ms Lovell urged the Minister to meet with Council representatives as a matter of urgency to discuss the depositing of clean fill in Green Wedge areas in the Shire and for him to approve planning amendments allowing the council to properly regulate the activity.

The amendments sought by Nillumbik Council will allow them to prevent dumping of fill through the requirement for a planning permit to be issued.

The Government’s Plan Melbourne Strategy highlights strategies to support planning for rural and Green Wedge areas in order to recognise and protect land for its agricultural, environmental, heritage, landscape, recreational and tourism values.

“Currently, there is no provision in Planning Schemes to regulate the deposit of clean fill in Green Wedge areas and I urge the Minister to meet with Nillumbik Shire Council representatives to discuss the issue and identify a path forward that will allow regulation of this concerning practice,” Ms Lovell told the Legislative Council.

“The amendments to the Planning Provisions lodged with the Minister for approval will allow Nillumbik and other councils to prevent this dumping by requiring a planning permit to be issued and I call on the Minister to take urgent action on the issue,” Ms Lovell said.

‘One click away’: VEC ■ Victorians unsure which local council election they must vote in can quickly and easily check using the ‘Find My Council’ feature, launched on the Victorian Electoral Commission’s website.

Elections for all councils in Victoria will take place in October, except for Casey, South Gippsland and Whittlesea.

“Suburban and council boundaries don’t always match up,” Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately explained.

“Using Find My Council, voters can quickly look up the council that covers their enrolled address, and from there go to information specific to their area.

“Find My Council puts you one click away from finding out about voting deadlines, the candidates who have nominated in your area, and when the time comes, the results for your council’s election,” Mr Gately said.

The new tool also enables people to search for details of elections (such as nominations) for other properties they own and pay rates for such as investment properties or holiday homes.

Voting for these properties is strongly encouraged but not compulsory unless the property is located within the City of Melbourne.

Find My Council has been developed by the VEC to make voting easy for all Victorians and

$2.5m for Yarra Ranges projects ■ Sport, recreation and energy projects in the Yarra Ranges will become a reality, following the announcement of $2.5 million funding from the State Government.

James Merlino, Monbulk MLA, announced funding for projects in the region, including $150,000 for the Upwey Skatepark Redesign, $1.85 million for a new pavilion at Kimberley Recreation Reserve in Chirnside Park and $500,000 for a new waste-to-energy project at Coldstream Waste Transfer Station.

Yarra Ranges Mayor, Cr Richard Higgins, said the Growing Suburbs Funding would turn these projects from ideas into reality.

Council CEO, Tammi Rose, said the Growing Suburbs Fund provides funding for community infrastructure projects in the ten interface and six peri-urban Council areas around Melbourne, including Yarra Ranges.

“Council has previously received Growing Suburbs Fund support for a number of major community projects, including the Queens Park Playspace in Healesville, the Burrinja Redevelopment in Upwey, the Mount Evelyn Community Sport and Recreation Pavilion project and the Upwey Tecoma Community Recreation and Sporting Hub (UTCRASH),” Ms Rose said.

The Council will join the Shires of Alpine, Indigo, Mansfield and Towong, Benalla Rural City, the Rural City of Wangaratta, and the Alpine Resort Management Boards of Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller on the Regional Tourism Board which represents the tourism industry of Victoria’s High Country.

Lovell backs Wedge

■ Wendy Lovell, MLC for Northern Victoria, has backed the efforts of Nillumbik Mayor Cr Karen Egan and her Council to protect the amenity and landscape values of the Shire’s Green Wedge areas.

Ms Lovell raised the issue with Richard Wynne, State Minister for Planning, in State Parliament last week.

Ms Lovell urged the Minister to meet with Council representatives as a matter of urgency to discuss the depositing of clean fill in Green Wedge areas in the Shire and for him to approve planning amendments allowing the council to properly regulate the activity.

The amendments sought by Nillumbik Council will allow them to prevent dumping of fill through the requirement for a planning permit to be issued.

The Government’s Plan Melbourne Strategy highlights strategies to support planning for rural and Green Wedge areas in order to recognise and protect land for its agricultural, environmental, heritage, landscape, recreational and tourism values.

“Currently, there is no provision in Planning Schemes to regulate the deposit of clean fill in Green Wedge areas and I urge the Minister to meet with Nillumbik Shire Council representatives to discuss the issue and identify a path forward that will allow regulation of this concerning practice,” Ms Lovell told the Legislative Council.

“The amendments to the Planning Provisions lodged with the Minister for approval will allow Nillumbik and other councils to prevent this dumping by requiring a planning permit to be issued and I call on the Minister to take urgent action on the issue,” Ms Lovell said.

Craig Lloyd is new Whittlesea CEO

■ Craig Lloyd will finish with Murrindindi Shire Council on Sunday, October 11.Acting arrangements are to be advised.

He will begin his duties at Whittlesea City Council on Monday, October 12.

Lydia Wilson, Chair of the Panel of Administrators at Whittlesea Council, said: ““We very much look forward to welcoming Craig to the City of Whittlesea and introducing him to our community.”

Mr Lloyd holds a Masters of Business Administration, a Post Graduate Certificate in Community Development (Emergency Management) and a Masters of Project Management.

He has also completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors Course and undertaken the Local Government Professionals Executive Leadership Program.

Mr Lloyd has an extensive background in leadership and management roles and is skilled in many facets of local government such as community engagement, environment, economic development, emergency management and IT. Mr Lloyd has extensive senior executive experience in the public sector, including roles with state and local government, emergency services and not-for profit organisations.

In addition to his busy role as CEO, he is on the board of the Bendigo Cemeteries Trust (Remembrance Parks Central Victoria), and Board Member of Regional Development Australia (Hume Region).

Outside of work he is a country music artist and is a Graduate of the Country Music Association of Australia’s Country Music Academy.

He is married and has two children.

Whittlesea Interim CEO Joe Carbone will remain at Council for a short time after Mr Lloyd arrives to provide a seamless transition.

“The Panel of Administrators would like to sincerely thank Joe for his leadership over the past six months,” Ms Wilson said.

“Joe did not apply for the permanent CEO role as he will return to his consulting business and directorship positions.

“I would personally like to thank Joe for his stable guidance during what was a significant period of change at the start of his tenure in March 2020.

“Since then he has put in a huge amount of time, effort and energy into leading this organisation and our community through the COVID-19 pandemic and in supporting myself and the Panel of Administrators.”

Murrindindi Shire Council thanked Mr Lloyd for his service to our community over the past 2½ years.

“Mr Lloyd has played an instrumental role in supporting our community through the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the 10 th Anniversary of the 2009 Victorian Bushfires,” said a Murrindindi Council representative.

“Mr Lloyd has led a significant positive culture change within Council and has been a strong advocate for additional State and Federal funding.

“He also helped guide the Council through considerable reform and modernisation, with a particular focus on improving customer service and improving community engagement.

“Additionally, Mr Lloyd has driven significant financial and capital works efficiencies within Council.”

Mr Lloyd made a statement this week about Murrindindi Council: “I would like to thank our wonderful staff for the amazing work that they do every day of the week, to serve communities across the Shire with passion, expertise and dedication, as well as their resilience during the pandemic.

“I would also like to offer my sincere thanks to our Councillors, and the three Mayors I have served under for their support, commitment to community and friendship.

“Finally, I would like to thank our community for their incredible support.”

Repairs needed at Badger Weir ■ The need for urgent repairs to be made to the road entrance of the Badger Weir picnic ground have been raised in State Parliament by Eildon MLA Cindy McLish.

Ms McLeigh told the Legislative Assembly last Thursday (Sept. 3) that Badger Creek has suffered greatly due to the lack of maintenance and poor weather conditions.

“I have been contacted by concerned locals who have reported that the current condition of the road is very poor.

“It is full of potholes, eroded in places and difficult to drive over.

“Located near Healesville township, Badger Weir picnic area is a popular recreation spot for locals and is also a destination for tourists wanting a real bush experience not so far from Melbourne.

It is usually filled with people enjoying the natural surrounds of the Yarra Ranges and utilising the onsite amenities by having picnics on the grass, firing up the barbecues and exercising on the many established walking tracks that lead off from the main area.

“Of course, given the pandemic and stage 4 restrictions that are in place in the Yarra Ranges, many people are unable to visit or use the grounds as they usually would.

“However, this is no reason to disregard repairs that need to take place.

“There are residents who live within the fivekilometre radius of Badger Weir picnic area and use the area for their one-hour of daily exercise or to even just take in the sights and get a breath of fresh air. Now, due to the much-needed restriction change, people can drive within the five-kilometre radius to then exercise.

“It is important to ensure the road is safe and comfortable to drive over. Furthermore, as we lead into the summer period, outdoor locations such as this will be utilised by locals and visitors post COVID-19. “To repair the road now will ensure it is in adequate condition during peak tourist season and that it is accessible for locals to still use while in stage 4 restrictions.

“This is not the first time I have raised the matter of repairs at Badger Weir picnic area.

Storms that swept through the area in October 2016 left much debris to clean up and caused damage to onsite facilities.

“It took the State Government over two years to organise clean up and repairs. During this period, the gates were locked to visitors. Locals and tourists were extremely upset by this and the amount of time it took to reopen the picnic grounds,” Ms McLeish said.

Month at a time ■ Tania Maxwell, MLC for Northern Victoria, says her preference is that the State Government’s ‘State of Emergency’ or ‘Disaster’ powers be extended month-by-month.

“I spoke in the Parliament against the proposed six-month extension to the State of Emergency,” Ms Maxwell said.

“This is undoubtedly one of the most important pieces of legislation on which I will be required to vote on during my time as a politician.

“That’s largely because the Bill requires us to address very important questions about the extent to which it is appropriate for governments and public officials to seek to impose their own will over the rights, freedoms and liberties of citizens.

“For my part, whilst I obviously recognise the need for very safe and careful management of COVID-19, I also

Clarke referred to disgraceful conduct carried on in the Sunday trains to Whittlesea, and said that on. a recent Sunday evening there were several woman visitors to the district helplessly drunk on the train, and their conduct was disgusting.

A constable's attention was directed to the matter, but he allowed himself to be bluffed off. Cr. Clarke moved that the Commissioners be asked if they have received a report from the travelling police on the matter.

MP hints at ‘malfeasance’ ■ Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green has hinted at the potential for ‘malfeasance’ at Nillumbik Council over soil dumping at Doreen.

“Over the last two months residents in the Nillumbik shire have pleaded with Nillumbik Shire Council to stop soil fill activities at 265 and 130 Chapel Lane, Doreen,” Ms Green said.

“I, along with the Chapel Lane residents, have grave concerns regarding Nillumbik Shire Council regulatory processes and its failure to use its powers.

“I’m astounded that council has allowed the company to continue works despite a permit being required.

“And when Melbourne Water and the Minister for Water made it clear that works needed to be stopped and the damage to the waterways needed to be repaired, council chose to implement traffic management protocols rather than seek an interim enforcement order.

“Understandably, residents are outraged that works have been allowed to continue, and so am I. “I’m deeply concerned that there may be malfeasance at council in relation to this matter.

Dan’s appalling management: Libs ■ Deputy State Opposition Cindy McLeish spoke in State Parliament last week about what she regards as the Andrews Government’s shortcomings in the handling of the Coronavirus pandemic in Victoria.

She said she was speaking to support the remarks of Michael O’Brien, State Opposition Leader, highlighting two elements of the current pandemic.

“One is the sacrifices that people have made, and the other element is the mismanagement that has occurred,” Ms McLeish said.

“I am going to start first of all with the sacrifices. It has been difficult for all of us and everyone is experiencing it in different ways, but there is no doubt it is extremely tough.

“There is a virus, and it is a nasty virus—and yes, it has also been mismanaged. And if you listen to speakers on the other side like the member for Eltham just now, you would think that it is actually being managed very well and life is a little bit rosier than perhaps it really is.

“Now, we have all needed to change our lives and our lifestyle for a period longer than we initially expected, and so many people have had to work hard through this difficult time.

“For some who are not working—they have lost their jobs—that is exceptionally difficult, and they are making different types of sacrifices.

“But then there are those on the front line—the police, the emergency services, our healthcare workers— that are all doing so much on that front line.

“Victorians in the metropolitan area were all subject to various restrictions, but stage 4 has been in place in that metropolitan area for about six weeks and it looks as though it will be another couple of weeks, so it is a couple of months.

That is a lot longer than people were expecting.

“For country Victoria things have been relatively COVID-free for some time.

“I know that at Easter people were exceptionally worried about cross-infection, and they still are because they see a lot of the things that the government have put in place have not quite worked.

“There has been a sieve around the city rather than a hard border and people have been very easily able to move between one and two without being checked.

“Certainly with V/Line, for example, for a long time people were able to move far too freely.

“And they are extremely worried at the same time that the longer people stay away the more regional tourism suffers, and when that bounce comes we need those businesses to thrive.

“Now, families have struggled a lot. Families with schoolchildren have struggled. Homeschooling— learning remotely—was novel last term. People thought it was a bit different, thought it was a little bit exciting.

“They thought, ‘Great, it’s going to end’. They were over it well and truly by the time it ended, and then it started again.

“That was a real kick for so many people, not just for families and students but I know for teachers as well, who had absolutely done so much to extend themselves and be creative.

“We are not sure whether the cleaners have been a source of transmission, because we have moved to a new method of cleaning contracts—a new unionised method of cleaning contracts—that has seen people go between schools. “ And schools, I know, are very worried about that. Let alone the hotel quarantine—the disaster on disaster—that others have prosecuted.

Trevor was a reisling ‘tragic’ ■ JOHN ROZENTALS remembers the late Trevor Mast's dedication to rlesling.

For Trevor Mast, the much loved late winemaker at central Victoria's Mount Langi Ghiran, who died of early-onset alzheimers in 2012, creating one of Australia's iconic shirazes was the easy part.

More difficult was taming his beloved riesling, the desire for which he had naturally picked up while studying grapegrowing and winemaking in Germany.

It wouldn't be wrong to classify him as a riesling tragic.

When I spoke with him in the mid-1990s, the wines Mast seemed proudest of were those he had fashioned from that prince of white varieties though he admitted he still had much to learn.

Certainly the dry whtes he made left very much in the shade the sauvignon blancs and pinot grigios that so dominate today's bottleshop shelves.

Fortunately, the current Mount Langi Ghiran team seems to have inherented this passion and has fashioned some delightful long-living wines from riesling.

Victorian Arts Maroondah Art Gallery

■ Maroondah Art Gallery was first established in 2001 within the community and cultural centre of Maroondah Federation Estate in Greenwood Ave, Ringwood. The Estate utilises the land and former buildings of the heritage listed 1920s Ringwood Primary School. The gallery space is in one of the school's original art studios.

The initial aim of the Gallery was to display Council's art collection and to further enhance and promote the arts in the region.

Exhibitions were a mixture if curated exhibitions, mid-career surveys, local artist and art collection exhibitions.

The Maroondah City Council Art Collection has its origins in the amalgamation of former Ringwood and Croydon municipalities in 1994.

The Collection continues to grow and now comprises more than 400 works including painting, photography, printmaking and ceramics with a growing focus on indigenous artists, the environment and sustainability.

Following the opening of ArtSpace at Realm, Maroondah Art Gallery has changed its name to Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery to more closely connect reflect the location of the space.

The Gallery moved towards a community-based program inviting applications form artists, curators and community groups to exhibit their work. The Maroondah Federation Estate Gallery hosts a broad variety if exhibitions with a focus on locally relevant content, including regular exhibitions of works from the Collection.

Wyreena Community Arts Centre also has a rich history. After it was saved from developers by a group of passionate locals in 1977. The property was purchased by the former City of Croydon and the Victorian Government to be repurposed as a Community Arts Centre. Since its official opening March1978 the Wyreena Community Arts Centre has remained the creative heart of the Croydon community and has become much loved by people from across Melbourne's outer eastern region. While all the art spaces are currently closed due to the COVIS-19 pandemic, exhibitions will be available again when restrictions are eased.

Eisteddfod by the Bay ■ Eisteddfod by the Bay, formerly the Mordialloc Eisteddfod, which was established in 1955, has held an annual eisteddfod for 65 years.

“We are proud of this tradition which we wanted to continue in 2020, and so decided to offerthe eisteddfod using Zoom,” said Jill Page.

“We think it is very important to offer an eisteddfod and it isvital during this current lock down period due to COVID- 19.

“We wanted to give a performance opportunity to young singers, actors and pianists which is so important. We were determined to provide a chance for competitors to be able to perform safely using a virtual platform at home, and ‘live’,” as this is an integral component of performance. Zoom has allowed this possibility.

“Unfortunately we had to cancel our Choral Festival, because of venue closure and numbers indoors.The Speech and Drama section ran first and worked very well, followed by the Junior Vocal section. Parents said, “ It gave my child something enjoyable to focus on”.

“The Senior Vocal section ran over two full days on the last weekend in August. The response from the young adult singers was very

positive and highlighted the need to provide the chance to work towards a goal and to perform.

“They were thrilled, not only to perform and sing, but also to “ dress up” as normal, which adds a professional element. “ Many young adults are studying at tertiary institutions and performance is an essential part of their studies. One entrant who had recently returned from overseas said that she felt “heartened" that members of the community such as EBTB were determined to have performance opportunities realised and that music can be made even in the most trying ofcircumstances. The Pianoforte section will be presented over two full days in September.

“It is crucial to have a team behind the scenes for planning and preparation purposes. There is always considerable work to do, but we had to adjust to the different genre and adopt different methods. But as we all know, life doesn't stop at 60, and British TV personality and author Richard Osman is correcting that balance with his new book, The Thursday Murder Club.

In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly to investigate unsolved killings. But their discussions strike close to home, when a local property developer is found dead, becoming The Thursday Murder Club's first live case.

With Elizabeth Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron on the case, will the mystery will be solved?

They may all be over 80, but they have at least 320 years of lived wisdom and insights into human nature to draw on.

As a lifelong reader of crime fiction, Osman kept this debut novel under wraps until he was ready to share it, and it will become an audio book read by popular British actor Lesley Manville, and a Steven Spielberg-led production company has bought the film rights.

Osman is known for his work on UK television series including Pointless and Richard Osman's House of Games, and with characteristic wit, he claims that The Thursday Murder Club is his first, and so far best, novel.

La Mama rebuilds

■ Rebuilding is going well at La Mama Theatre in Carlton, where builders have taken over La Mama on Faraday Street, and made a temporary home base at the Courthouse while La Mama staff are working from home.

Chroma Group started work on August 13, establishing the site and installing the hoarding. Stage 4 restrictions have been problematic, but the weather has been great and progress is at a rapid rat.!

Over the last few weeks the box office, theatre entry decking, storage shed and forecourt paving have all been demolished but the precious signage, fence panels and courtyard paving have been removed and stored off-site.

These items, as well as old bricks, floorboards, plants, paint and anything that can be salvaged will find their way back into La Mama's new home in resourceful and inspired ways.

The team has begun work on the in-ground stormwater and sewerage rough-in and the excavation and pouring of the new admin and rehearsal building concrete footings are in place, painting a picture of what's to come.

■ Wendy Lovell, MLC for Northern Victoria, is calling on the Andrews Government to provide a more tailored response to economic recovery in regional communities.

Sunday’s announcement by Daniel Andrews says the trigger to move to the “Last Step” restrictions is no new COVID cases for 14 days across the whole of Victoria, including metropolitan Melbourne, Ms Lovell said.

As at September 6, 31 country local government areas have not had a new case for at least two weeks, and three local government areas have never had a COVID case.

Of the 23 LGA’s in the Northern Victoria region, 18 have not recoded a new a case for over two weeks, twohave never recoded a COVID case and only 6 of the 23 LGA’s currently have active COVID cases.

“Yet the Andrews Labor Government is forcing all country areas to remain in Stage 3 restrictions despite most of Northern Victoria meeting the “Last Step” test,” Ms Lovell said.

■ The Los Angeles Dodgers are an American professional baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Dodgers compete in Major League Baseball as a member club of the National League West division.

August 23, 1978, was the birthdate of L. A. Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant. He lived an amazing life until the helicopter crash took his life on Sunday January 26 this year.

The LA Dodgers baseball team honoured the great man by wearing the Gold and Purple colours of the Lakers and each player wore his numbers on the back of their jerseys.

The Numbers 8 and 24 are Kobe's numbers that he played under. Both teams are part owned by Laker legend Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson Jr.

Sleeping habits change ■ So how are you sleeping these days? Some children and adolescents may actually be getting more sleep, or better sleep, while others are struggling with disrupted routines, anxiety and electronics, sometimes all at the same time.

And even for those who have settled into new schedules that leave them reasonably well rested, back-to-school season may mean a possibly problematic reset.

The results of the study showed that kids at home in the pandemic were going to sleep later 57 minutes later, on average than 2018 weekday bedtimes, and 30 minutes later than weekends and they were also waking up later, and the differences in wake-up times were larger. They were waking an hour and 52 minutes later than on weekdays in 2018, and an hour later than on weekends.

The researchers did not distinguish between weekdays and weekends in the 2020 sample, concluding that the children were essentially on "holiday schedule."

In other words, they were sleeping longer at night than the children in 2018 and, perhaps not surprisingly, sleeping less during the day; only 27.5 percent routinely took daytime naps, compared with 79.8 percent in 2018 (69.4 percent on weekends).

It added up to about the same amount of sleep in a 24-hour period, and, interestingly, "somewhat unexpectedly," as the researchers noted, the caregivers in 2020 reported fewer sleep disturbances. Daytime sleepiness, night waking, bedtime resistance and sleep anxiety were all lower in the pandemic sample than in the 2018 group.

■ Scientists who are studying immune responses to the novel coronavirus say there are encouraging signs of strong, lasting immunity after exposure, even in people who develop only mild symptoms of COVID-19.

According to The New York Times, studies have shown that disease-fighting antibodies appear to stick around for months after infections have cleared up. "Things are really working as they're supposed to," said Deepta Bhattacharya, an immunologist at the University of Arizona and an author on one of the new studies, which has not yet been peer-reviewed. While protection against reinfection cannot be fully confirmed until there's proof that most people who encounter the virus a second time are actually able to keep it at bay, Marion Pepper of the University of Washington, said: "This is exactly what you would hope for. All the pieces are there to have a totally protective immune response." However, researchers can't say how long these encouraging immune responses will last.

■ As the Coronavirus pandemic continues to devastate the global travel industry, British billionaire Richard Branson's Virgin Group, whose business sprawls across cruises, hotels, airlines and trains, is being devastated from all angles.

Increasingly, its long-shot space tourism and hyper-loop businesses represent its last shreds of hope.

Last week, Virgin's flagship airline, Virgin Atlantic, filed for bankruptcy protection in the US as the company raced to secure a $1.5 billion restructuring plan to maintain solvency.

The airline has resumed passenger flight after months of service suspension due to COVID-19, but it doesn't expect to turn a profit again until 2022.

■ Dr Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor for the Trump administration's Coronavirus task force, said this week that he sees "no reason" Americans should avoid voting in-person as long as social distancing guidelines are followed.

"I think if carefully done, according to the guidelines, there's no reason that I can see why that not be the case," Fauci said of in-person voting.

"If you go and wear a mask, if you observe the physical distancing, and don't have a crowded situation, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to do that."

Fauci cited the social distancing guidance at some grocery stores that have placed an "X" every six feet or so where the checkout line forms, as well as signs directing customers to remain on their "X" until the person ahead of them has advanced.

However, those who would be in danger if exposed to the Coronavirus because of health issues are better off voting by mail, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director said.

Homicides up ■ The homicide rate has spiked across 20 of America's major cities, The New York Times has reported, citing a criminologist.

The reported crime surge comes as the nation faces the coronavirus pandemic, ongoing protests and an upcoming presidential election.

The murder rate in 20 major American cities increased an average of 37% from the end of May to the end of June, University of Missouri-St. Louis criminologist Richard Rosenfeld said, according to The New York Times. In 2019, the murder rate increased an average of 6% from May to June. New York has seen a 30% increase in the homicide rate this year, according to the report. New York City has seen a surge in violent crime over the past several months, including a 205% increase in shooting incidents between June 2 and June 15 compared to that same period last year. Burglary and grand larceny crimes were also higher in June 2020 compared to June 2019.

Police stand at the scene of a shooting which happened as Save Our Streets (S.O.S.) was holding a peace march in response to a surge in shootings in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood in Brooklyn on July 16, 2020 in New York City.

The march and shooting was held near the scene in Brooklyn where a one-year-old child, Davell Gardner Jr., was recently shot and killed. Davell was shot near a playground during a Sunday picnic when gunfire erupted. Two other adults were wounded in the evening shooting. New York City has witnessed a surge in gun violence over the past month with nine people killed, including children, and 41 others wounded on the Fourth of July weekend alone. There were 6 killings in Kansas City over the weekend of August 7 to 9, bringing the total number of murders in the city this year to 122. At this time last year, there had been 90 homicides, according to The New York Times. Homicides doubled in May and June compared to those months the previous year. At the end of July, Kansas City had already reported about 490 non-fatal shootings the same number as it did in all of last year.

■ Sunset Boulevard is on my list of 10 favourite films. In 1950 Nancy Olson was only 22 when she was cast in the role of Betty Schaefer by Paramount Studios.

Nancy received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her performance opposite William Holden and Gloria Swanson.

Nancy was born in Milwaukee in 1928, educated at the University of Wisconsin and later moved to California.

She was spotted by a talent agent in a stage production and signed to a seven-year contract

by Paramount Studios.

After a good part in the western film Canadian Pacific, Nancy landed the "role of a lifetime" in Sunset Boulevard.

I did speak to Nancy Olson several years ago for a radio interview. Nancy told me that whilst they were filming Sunset Boulevard William Holden was having marital problems, he was not getting good roles and his career was a bit shaky.

The character of ‘Joe Gillis’ could not have come at a better time in his career and he was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award.

Nancy went on to make three more films with William Holden. During her film career she was cast opposite some of Hollywood's famous older leading men. Her co-stars included, Randolph Scott, John Wayne and Fred MacMurray.

Kakadu Bird Week starts Sept. 26

■ Nature will be at its most spectacular during the annual Kakadu Bird Week, which will be staged between September 26 and October 3.

The week-long celebration of nature offers visitors the opportunity to engage in free bird activities, join expert-guided tours and Aboriginal bird experiences, and cruise the wetlands.

With the dry season at its peak and the wetlands receding in advance of the arrival of the monsoon rains, Kakadu's rich variety of birds, crocodiles and other wildlife are at their most evident.

Kakadu was voted number one in bird-watching destinations in Australia by Australian Geographic and is home to over one third of Australia's bird species.

It is a great opportunity to view graceful sea eagles fishing in the Barramundi-filled waters and watch the remarkable jesus bird seemingly walking on water.

Kakadu Bird Week is the perfect time for nature lovers to discover Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory.

The festival will feature a packed itinerary of events designed for both dedicated bird watchers and those who just love seeing nature at its most spectacular.

Thredbo, the hot air balloons departed Thredbo and floated across the Kosciuszko National Park down the Crackenback Valley towards Jindabyne.

Craig Farrell of Balloon Aloft said the idea was a result of a long-held desire to fly a balloon over snow; a very unusual experience in Australia.

After a few discussions with a fellow Canberra balloonist about the most scenic place to launch they chose Thredbo, then researched the best conditions for the flight.

Production leaves Melbourne

■ It is almost certain that future taping of Nine’s Hot Seat will shift to Queensland. Eddie McGuire has already relocated to Queensland following the Magpies. His radio commitments are relatively easily transferred to the state with the sun. Production and crew will only return to Melbourne when safe.

■ Sad news that Australia’s first presenter of food and culinary presentation in Geraldine Dillon has died. Readers will remember Geraldine on her weekly show on Nine in the Sixties.

Stars: *** Review: An gorilla named Ivan, raised by a family since infancy, is the headline act at a shopping mall circus, and here he learns to draw and as a result becomes a sensation, and as he tries to piece together his past, some of his friends hatch a plan to escape from their captivity.

Surprisingly entertaining talking animals family adventure-comedy is carried along with delightful bursts of quirky comedy and heartfelt poignancy, a journey inspired by true events delivered through the true a time-tested formula that has been a staple diet for Disney story-telling for generations, and one that is sure to grip the hearts of children and even most adults in the room.

Veteran Bryan Cranston shines as the Mall Circus owner and ringmaster, and is aided effectively by Ariana Greenblatt as the daughter of the circus janitor who forms a special bond with the animals, along with such voices for the animals as Sam Rockwell as Ivan, Angelina Jolie as Stella the bush elephant, Danny DeVito as Bob, a stray dog, Helen Mirren as the poodle Snickers, Brooklynn Prince as the baby bush elephant Ruby and Chaka Khan as Henrietta the silkie chicken, among other delightful characters.

Based on the book by Katherine Applegate, written for the screen

by Mike White, and directed with great warmth and sensitivity by relative newcomer Thea Sharrock, this is a major step-up from the previous emotionless 2019 circus themed "Dumbo," this time delivering impressive visuals and much needed heart and soul, and although formulaic, for the most part as a family-friendly narrative it works, and works well, an enjoyable and uplifting experience that won't let go, right into the end credits by which time you will be reaching for the tissues.

FILM: I AM WOMAN (Now Streaming on STAN): Genre: Biography/Music/Drama.

Rating: M. Length: 116 Minutes.

Stars: **½ Review: In 1966, at age 24, native Australian singer Helen Reddy arrives in New York with her three-year-old daughter, a suitcase and little money, and follows her battle with a sexist culture and troubled relationship with husband and manager Jeff Wald, but within five years becomes one of the biggest superstars of her time with eight number one US singles and an icon of the 1970s feminist movement beginning with her hit song "I Am Woman."

Fascinating and on the surface a generally entertaining biopic from first time feature director Unjoo Moon from a screenplay by Emma Jensen (Mary Shelley/2017) is an ultimately all too shallow and fractured depiction of the music stars rise to fame, for example: "I Am Woman" was not the star-making hit from her debut album as depicted in the film, but in fact was from her second album, by which time she already had five or so hit singles from her first album, and more disappointing is that there is no substantial Melbourne born/Australian back-story, other than her Aussie accent ... and surprisingly her major film breakthrough roles such as "Airport 1975" or most notably her starring role in "Pete's Dragon" for Disney in 1977 are ignored.

As far as performances are concerned, Tilda Cobham-Hervy gives a generally effective performance as Helen Reddy throughout as she mimics a number of hit tracks including "I Don't Know How To Love Him," "Angie Baby" and twice with "I Am Woman," among others, along with a solid performance by Danielle Macdonald as friend and author Lilian Roxon, author of the influential Rock Encyclopedia, however, it is Evan Peters who hits the ball right out of the park with a highly passionate sledgehammer performance as manager/ husband Jeff Wald, who would managed such stars as Sylvester Stallone, Donna Summer, Deep Purple and Tiny Tim. With material drawn from Helen Reddy's autobiography "The Woman I Am: A Memoir," creative liberties are nothing new to screen biopics, but at least previous efforts such as "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Rocketman" had a forceful and energetic drive, which this lacks, and along with disappointing cinematography by Australian Oscar winner Dion Beebe, all-in-all, this story of an extraordinary woman and entertainer who gave feminism a powerful anthem deserved better and more, a story that without doubt would have suited better with more coherent screen time, or most notably, as a miniseries.

Rourke’s Reviews Becky ■ (MA). 93 minutes. Opens in selected states September 10.

Home Alone goes extreme with this ultra-violent black comedy/ thriller, which sees a 13-year-old girl take on a group of unwanted guests.

Lulu Wilson stars as Becky, a teenager who is filled with anger and abandonment after the death of her mother, who succumbed to cancer.

Becky's father, Jeff (Joel McHale), tries to connect with her, but is continually pushed away, even more so when he introduces his daughter to new girlfriend Kayla (Amanda Brugel) and her young son Ty (Isaiah Rockcliffe) during a stay at the family lake house.

Things take a turn for the worse when escaped convict Dominick (Kevin James) and his accompanying goons turn up on their doorstep, looking for a key that the leader has hidden there.

Apart from the group when the neo-Nazis arrive, it is up to Becky to save the day, with a ferocity that will lead to much bloodshed.

Though the script keeps characterisations to a bare minimum, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion (Cooties, Bushwick) take to the material with gusto, unafraid to show a young teen venting her anger in such relentless fashion, resulting in some quite effective confrontations.

Only during the final act does the film stumble, becoming somewhat clumsy in wrapping things up.

Wilson is fine as Becky, while James, a bafflingly popular comedic actor who has given audiences some of the worst films ever made (the Paul Blart films are a prime example), is surprisingly good as the lead heavy.

However, those who are squeamish beware, as the violence is graphic and impactful.

She Dies Tomorrow

■ (M). 85 minutes. Now available on DVD. Both compelling and unsettling (not to mention timely), this wellobserved, finely tuned film from actor-turned-writer/director Amy Seimetz (Sun Don't Shine) will either intrigue or infuriate viewers, but those who embrace its surreal approach and slow-burn pacing, will most likely put this among the most absorbing efforts of the year.

Amy (Kate Lyn Sheil), a recovering alcoholic who is moving into a new home, suddenly believes she is going to die tomorrow.

Calling her friend Jane (Jane Adams), Amy relates this information to her, but is casually dis-

missed, with Jane passing the troubling comments off as a booze-related relapse. However, when Jane returns home, she starts to feel the same kind of dread and anxiety that was enveloping Amy, and after Jane pays a surprise visit at the house of her brother Jason (Chris Messina) and his wife Susan (Katie Aselton), it becomes apparent that this dark depression is contagious, like a virus.

Seimetz shows great intelligence and restraint in the telling of her story, and is confident in the possibilities raised in her script.

Seimetz is also adept at not falling into either bombastic excess or tiresome David Lynch homage.

Seimetz relies on a disorientating mood to get into the main characters' fractured headspace, and the results are immersive and potent.

Strong performances are also a major asset, with Sheil and Adams (Happiness) particular stand-outs.

There is even a cameo by director Adam Wingard (Pop Skull, The Guest), who gave Seimetz a meaty role in the underrated 2010 thriller A Horrible Way To Die. Praise too must go to Jay Keitel, who creates some impressively memorable imagery. Though its premise does remind one at times of films such as Perfect Sense (2011), Pontypool (2008) and The Signal (2007), She Dies Tomorrow is a creation that successfully attains an identity all its own, and confirms Seimetz as a film-making talent to watch.

Ava ■ (MA). 97 minutes. Now available on Blu-ray and DVD. For anyone who may think they are in store for a classy action/ thriller with Ava, then here's a warning; a great cast doesn't necessarily guarantee a great film.

Jessica Chastain plays Ava, an assassin-for-hire who becomes a target when the obligatory important mission goes predictably wrong.

Everything about this turkey misfires, from unconvincing fight scenes, laughable dialogue, a complete lack of excitement, and a sense that we've seen this a million times before.

Most of the blame falls on Matthew Newton's abysmal script and Tate Taylor's borderline incompetent direction.

Chastain is a great actor, but the poor writing completely betrays her.

A talented but wasted cast includes John Malkovich, Colin Farrell, Geena Davis and Joan Chen.

8-race program at M’borough ■ Maryborough commenced the week with a eight race program and Kiwi bred Dream Vacation-Chiola Belle filly Aldebaran Belle scored her first victory at start number 18 by taking the Moonlight Lodge 3Y0 Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres to the delight of Duncan McPherson's Aldebaran Lodge Pty. Ltd. and a number of delighted co-owners.

Trained at Daylesford by Anne-Maree Conroy, Aldebaran Belle driven by brother Glenn settled three back along the markers from gate two as Whos Countn led from barrier four with the favourite Hopeful Beauty (barrier six) going forward to park in the open.

The race changed complexion on the final bend when Hopeful Beauty went off stride allowing Bellmac Beauty which had trailed to come off the back of the pacemaker, with Glenn easing Aldebaran Belle three wide to issue a challenge. Finishing strongly, Aldebaran Belle recorded a 2.2 metre margin over Bellmac Beauty terurning a mile rate of 2-07.8. Whos Countn held down third 2.1 metres away.

■ Another with the Aldebaran moniker Aldebaran Sundown bred by Duncan, scored in the Aldebaran Park Maiden Trotters Mobile over the sprint trip of 1690 metres. Trained at Shelbourne by Kate Hargreaves and Alex Ashwood and raced by both families, Aldebaran Sundown a beautifully bred Skyvalley-Aldebaran Sunset 4Y0 gelding driven by Josh Duggan starting from inside the second line spent most of the race bottled up four back along the markers, with Rockford Beach leading from gate five.

Extricated to be three wide in the last lap, Aldebaran Sundown making his eighth race appearance ran home best to score a last stride half head victory over Rockford Beach, with The Night King third 9.4 metres back after racing exposed. The mile rate 2-03.

■ Beeac trainer Courtney Slater used the services of Michael Stanley to land the 1690 metre Avoca Maryborough Community Bank Branches 3Y0 Maiden Pace aboard Somebeachsomewhere-Bella Joy colt Goodtime Floyd.

Trailing the poleline leader and favourite The Big Yin second up from Kiwiland, Goodtime Floyd using the sprint lane prevailed by 1.9 metres from a game Trittrittbangbang (gate five) which faced the breeze, with The Big Yin a disappointing third 4 metres away. The mile rate 1-59.8.

■ Huntly part-owner/trainer Barry Quigley was successful in the Jacinta's Hair Stylist Pace over 1690 metres with 4Y0 Petrock-Major Love mare Miss Moraine in a rate of 1-58.6. Driven by Ellen Tormey, Miss Moraine began brilliantly from outside the front line to lead throughout, accounting for Jet Black Orion (one/two - three wide last lap) and Its A Borg (one/one) which was badly held up approaching the final bend finishing 1.2 metres away.

Top combination ■ Shepparton raced on Tuesday and veteran Tatura trainer Russ Thomson was victorious with a 4Y0 Rock N Roll Heaven-Nightn Georgia gelding by the name of My Mate Col which scored in the 1690 metre Central Tyre Service Maiden Pace, but not before giving his supporters a few worries.

Leading out from gate two, My Mate Col travelled sweetly for Josh Aiken until the last lap when he seemed to lose interest, raced roughly and galloped allowing Gigis Grinner which had made a swift forward move from last to dash clear prior to the home turn.

Regaining his composure, My Mate Col using the sprint lane on turning was able to gain the day by 4 metres in a mile rate of 2-00.2 from Gigs Grinner, with Rambleon (three back the markers - three wide home turn) running on late after being checked in the back straight for third 1.5 metres away.

■ The state's leading training combination of Emma Stewart and Clayton Tonkin snared a double at the meeting courtesy of first starter Ladies In Red in the Your Sold Real Estate 2Y0 Maiden Pace over 1690 metres and quality filly Amelia Rose in the Neatline Homes Pace over the same trip, both horses driven by Jodi Quinlan.

■ Bolinda trainer/driver Lisa Miles was a winner at Shepparton when cleverly named 4Y0 Bacardi Lindy-Ima Tartan Tease gelding Tam Oshanter greeted the judge in the Saddleworld Shepparton Trotters Mobile over 2190 metres.

Raced by a large group of trotting enthusiasts, Tam Oshanter (gate two) settled four back along the markers as Venkman (gate three) crossed Starlight Storm (gate five) shortly after the start.

When Angels Breath (three back the markers) came away from the inside hitting the back straight on the final occasion and Starlight Storm doing the same on the final bend, Tam Oshanter obtained a dream sprint lane passage to gain the day by a neck from Starlight Storm, with the raging hot favourite Cracker Jet (one/one last lap - three wide home turn) a disappointing third a neck away. The mile rate 2-02.5. It was Tam Oshanter's fourth success in 26 outings.

Settled four back ■ Ballarat held a seven event card on Wednesday and Elliminyt (Colac) trainer Daniel Laird combined with Western District reinsman Xavier O'Connor to land the C & L Electrical Pace over 2200 metres with Searover, a 5Y0 Cullens Hope-Mosquito Flyer gelding who chalked up his 3rd success in 35 outings.

Settling four back in the moving line from gate five, Searover after going forward three wide in the final circuit ran on well to register a 4.1 metre victory in advance of the pacemaker Atego Shades, with Change Of Plans (one/one) 6.1 metres back in third place. The mile rate 200.7.

■ Four year old Dejarmbro-Fire Chase mare Whisp Of Smoke recently purchased by clients of the Kate Hargreaves/Alex Ashwood stable had a first up victory for them in the BHRC Ladies Committee Trotters Mobile over 2200 metres.

A little slow to begin from barrier six, Whisp Of Smoke once balanced was sent forward by reinsman Josh Duggan shortly after the start to cross the early leader Well Deserved which flew away from outside the front line to lead easily.

Rated to perfection, Whisp Of Smoke raced away on turning to record a 24.1 metre victory in 2-02.9 over Charlie Walker (three back the markers) and Kyvalley Catwalk (one/one) who was 2.6 metres away.

■ Duncan McPherson's luck is running hot at present and 5Y0 Majestic Son-Solar Powered gelding Aldebaran Willo trained by Brent Lilley at Bolinda and driven by Chris Alford was a strong victor of the Eureka Concrete Trotters Handicap over 2200 metres. A trifle slow to begin from 10 metres, Aldebaran Willo was immediately sent forward out very wide on the track to park outside the leader Eoghan Omaille for the majority of the race.

Travelling kindly approaching the final bend, Aldebaran Willo when given full rein in the straight raced clear as the winning post came into view to score by 5.7 metres from Namoscar (one/two at bell - three wide last lap) after galloping away from barrier three, with Eoghan Omaille holding down third 8.9 metres back.

The rate 2-02.7.

Another of the team Aldebaran Levani (Donato Hanover) also was successful at Pennsylvania in the USA overnight.

■ Parwan's Jodi Quinlan trained and reined 4Y0 Mach Three-Placid Castle mare Error to capture the 1710 metre Grease Monkey Pace in a rate of 1-56.3. Second up since April, Error possied three back in the moving line mid-race after starting inside the second line as Julius Shadow (gate four) led.

Easing three wide running into the home turn, Error finished strongly to record a 1.5 metre margin over Just Call Me Mac from last, with Seemepearlywhites third 3.3 metres back after going forward to race uncovered.

Double Day ■ Thursday as usual was double day with Cranbourne racing in the afternoon and Bendigo at night.

■ Shepparton's Stephen (Boyo) Boyington enjoyed a super night at Bendigo with a winning double - Frankie taking the Lather Up Standing At Woodlands Stud 3Y0 Pace over 2150 metres and Reality Writer the Yankee Rockstar Standing At Northern Rivers Equine Pace over the same trip. Frankie (Pet Rock-Gold Liner) sprinted sharply from mid-field in the moving line to defeat the fast finishing Celestia from last by a head in 1-58.8, with Crompton Bay (four back the markers) flashing home late for third 2.7 metres away, while Reality Writer, a 4Y0 Sportswriter-Reality Check mare having her first outing for 26 months scored in almost identical fashion, running home strongly to account for Cracked Pepper which led on the home turn by a half neck in 1-58.1. Ace Montana (four back the markers last lap) finished fast when clear on straightening to be third 3.1 metres away.

■ Bannockburn trainer/driver Geoff Webster produced a smart ex-Kiwi 4Y0 Bettors DelightTara Gold gelding by the name of Stingray Tara to land the 2150 metre Sebastian K Standing At Trump Bloodstock Pace in a rate of 1-56 at his Australian debut. Going forward from gate four to settle outside the leader Monash (gate two), Stingray Tara who's racing was all in the deep south cruised to the front on the final bend, holding a margin to the wire to greet the judge by an impressive 7.8 metres from Izzy Jolie (one/one) and Ajay Breezy Rose from mid-field which switched down to the sprint lane on turning.

■ Tatura trainer David Abrahams combined with Amanda Turnbull aboard Muscle MassAldebaran Sunset gelding Sunsup to snare the Aldebaran Eagle Standing At Aldebaran Park 2Y0 Trotters Handicap over 2150 metres no doubt delighting mother Patsy who races him.

Given a charmed passage from barrier two trailing Sweet On You which drew outside him, Sunsup when easing off the back of the leader on the final bend finished full of running to score by 16.5 metres from Bromwich which led up the outside division last lap after easing away from four back the markers. Surprise To Me (three back the markers) ran on late for third 3.4 metres away. The mile rate 2-04.6.

■ At Cranbourne, Rockbank popular Rockbank trainer/driver Freddy Spiteri was successful with Fling It-Golden Photo filly Mariachi in the 2080 metre Hygain 3Y0 Trotters Mobile. Given every opportunity from gate three after leading then handing over to Aldebaran Stevie which crossed from outside the front line, Mariachi using the sprint lane outgunned the leader to record a half neck margin in 2-06.3. Jade Nien also used the sprint lane from three back the markers for third 4.9 metres away.

■ It was a big day for Melton based ex-Kiwi trainer Kelly Stuart-Mitchell, a step sister of top New Zealand reinsman Todd Mitchell who possibly landed her first winner after Angus HallAll Finesse gelding Claudy And Gus scored in the Decron 2Y0 & Older Trotters Handicap over 2110 metres.

Travelling kindly, Claudy And Gus defied all challengers over the concluding stages to register a 2.8 metre victory from Abitofadreamer which moved to raced exposed at the bell, with Quick Witted (one/two) third 36.9 metres away.

Presently working for the Caldow's the victory gave Olivia an early birthday present as she celebrated turning 19 the next day. Settling at the tail of the field from the extreme draw, Our Sportscaster ran home off a three wide double trail to register a head margin in 1-54.9 over Bulletproof Boy along the sprint lane after trailing the weakening leader Huli Nien. Kasbah Kid (three wide last lap) was third a half neck back.

■ It was a big day for the Caldow's as John was victorious with 6Y0 Always A Virgin-Evasive Moves gelding Pantzup in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile over 2240 metres. Can the big one strike again?

■ Top South Australian sprinter Behemoth proved in his Memsie Stakes win that the big galloper, weighing around 600 kilos, and standing 17 hands - incidentally the same height as the great Phar Lap - that he will be hard to beat again when he contests the Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington on Saturday (Sept. 12).

From his 16 race starts, he has won six, with four seconds, and mostly in top company.

He has now topped over one million dollars in stakemoney for the David Jolley camp in South Australia.

In recent runs he ran fourth in the Goodwood Handicap behind Trekking, Gytrash, and Lyre, then won the Spring Stakes over 1200 metres, beating the class horse Dalasan, although the latter, wasn't suited over the short trip.

He again looks the one to beat in the Makybe Diva, although stepping up to 1600 metres.

On the next line is the good Western Australian mare, Arcadian Queen, who was a late scratching at Caulfield from the Memsie.

She is all class having won nearly $2 million in stakemoney, and one of the best to come out of ‘Sandgroper’ town.

From her only 10 starts, she has won six of those all in top company, with a third.

At her first run back since November last year, she ran fifth in the Peter Lawrence Stakes over 1400 metres on August 15 at Caulfield, around 2.5 lengths off the winner, Savatiano.

On her day she is hard to beat and always puts in.

The James Cummings-trained Cascadian, wasn't far off them in the Memsie, finishing fourth, about 2.5 lengths off the winner, Behemoth, after being in a bit of trouble earlier.

The stable has a big opinion of the six yearold who came a good fourth in the Peter Lawrence Stakes at Caulfield on August 15.

He is one you just can't leave out, as like Arcadian Queen, always does his best.

Next we have Mr Quickie, whose two recent runs have been first-class.

He ran a good second to Sentimentalist in the Caulfield Open over 2000 metres after missing the start, but finished strongly to go down by just under a length.

His run in the Memsie was a ripper coming from eighth at the 400 metre mark to get beaten by 1.5 lengths.

He could be on the way back, he has always shown ability, maybe it's starting to show, and the 1600 metres at Flemington will help.

Next is the Graeme Begg-trained four-yearold, Nonconformist, who has only had seven runs, for three wins and three minor placings, missing a place for the first time, when fourth in the Member's Handicap over 1400 metres.

The consistent Oceanex put in a shocker finishing second last in the Members Handicap, and unless something unexpected happened, would need to improve on that run to beat these.

However, he is in the strong camp of Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior, and he is sure to improve rapidly with the skilful double.

One that you have to keep your eye on is the top Western Australian horse, Regal Power, a winner of nearly $4 million in stakemoney having won seven of his 22 starts, with seven mi-

It's bad luck for the Adam Trinder stable, who has had no luck with the top mare, winner of the All Star Mile and a good fifth in the Cox Plate last year, this time around.

Another good run in the Heatherlie Handicap was that of Dr Drill from the powerful Maher-Eustace camp.

The smart galloper, put in a blinder coming from 13th at the 400 metre mark to finish only 1.5 lengths behind, In Good Health.

On his day he is smart, having won seven of his 25 starts with nine minor placings.

How good is he?

■ The question on all racelover's lips at the moment is ‘how good, is Anders?’, an absolute

dominant winner of the San Domenico Stakes over 1100 metres at Rosehill.

Pitted against three smart colts in Doubtland, unbeaten in two starts, Peltzer undefeated in three starts, and Mamaragan, who ran third in the Golden Slipper.

The race was over at the start, when Anders flew the barriers, and shot to about a four-length lead in a matter of a few strides.

He has now won his last four starts from his eight outings.

He is prepared by the top team, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, who are taking all before them Impeccably bred, by Not A Single Doubt, from Madam Andree, Anders has caught the eye of many in Racing with his brilliance, especially his trainer, Ciaron Maher.

He was quoted as saying after his big win, that he wouldn't be afraid to put him in in any race.

This was the question posed by the media after his brilliant win in the San Domenico.

There’s a possible start in the Everest, after his brilliant win.

Anders belted around the tricky Rosehill track in an exciting display of sheer speed.

Maher said later: “I was a bit nervous when he was peeling off 10.4 seconds for his 200 metre sectionals".

Anders crossed to the lead straight after they jumped, and had his five rivals really struggling to keep up, winning by three and quarter lengths.

Anders ran a stunning one minute 2.67 seconds, a race record, and only a tick outside Westicaro's long standing course record of one minute 2.51 seconds set 13 years ago.

Bookies have made him a $15 chance in the Everest, if he runs.

The favourite Nature Strip is being quoted at $ 2.80.

Anders is all class, but it's a big task for a horse that has just turned three.
