Lockdown Love Story

● Most weddings have been banned under the State Government restrictions introduced because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Rebecca Gallo and Ryan Hurst received a special exemption for their wedding last Friday (Aug. 7).

Rebecca, 26, is fighting cancer. Ryan’s father, Jeff, petitioned the State Government, and the wedding took place on the couple’s Kinglake property.

Ryan is well known throughout the North-Eastfor his Kinglake Football Club involvements. He is a voluntary football scribe for The Local Paper.

C’burn up-skirting ■ Fawkner Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives are hoping to identify a man following an up-skirting incident in Craigieburn last month.

The incident occurred at a Craigieburn Rd shopping centre about 7.30pm on Wednesday, July 22.

Investigators have been told a 20-year-old woman was inside a bathroom cubicle when she noticed trade boots under the next cubicle.

The woman then looked up and observed an unknown man filming her on his mobile phone from above.

The woman screamed and the man quickly fled before driving away in a dark-coloured 2002-2004 Holden Commodore VY. The man is perceived to be Caucasian in appearance, aged in his 20s, and had short black hair and a beard.

Macleod charges

■ A 41-year-old man from Macleod was to face the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court charged with four counts of theft, handle stolen goods, deal property suspected proceeds of crime, dishonestly tamper with mail receptacle, loiter with intent to commit indictable offence and commit indictable offence whilst on bail. He was issued with a penalty for breaching the Health Officer’s directions.

Dangerous dog ■ Yarra Council's decision to declare ‘Boreen’ a dangerous dog has affirmed been affirmed by Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal Member R. Tang.

Rhodesian ridgeback cross (‘Boreen’) attacked and killed a West Highland terrier (‘Prue’) at a park in Hoddle St and Perry St in Collingwood.

High harm crimes

■ Victoria Police have charged another person in relation to a series of alleged highharm crimes linked to a number of aggravated burglaries in Melbourne’s south eastern suburbs. Two males were arrested following an alleged aggravated home invasion.

Two other teens were arrested and charged Wednesday after they were found in an allegedly stolen vehicle.

700 laptops

■ Yarra Ranges Shire Councillors were last night (Tues.) due to vote on the purchase of 700 HP laptop computers and associated equipment from Thomas Duryea Logicalis Pty Ltd for the for the total lump sum of $1,134,928.57 excluding GST. "There were no locally-based approved panellists able to undertake this project.”

Kilmore plan

■ Some 16 submissions have been made to Mitchell Shire Council about the development of land, south-east of Kilmore.

The subject land is comprised of 170 hectares and is bounded to the north by Tootle St and the Elms Retirement Estate, to the east

by Quinns Rd, to the south by Wandong Rd. The matter is due to go before Mitchell Council next Monday (Aug. 10).

Photo: 2018 party at The Standard The Mott family of Whittlesea and Wallan - which once appeared in the BRW Rich 200 List - has scored a $119,410 grant from the Liberal Federal Government for their North Central Review newspaper. The 2020 round of grants was announced last week. Another grant, amount undisclosed, was granted to the Mott family’s Alexandra Standard and Yea Chronicle to “increase productivity and sustainability by redeveloping the Grantee’s website and replacing out of date IT equipment.”

This means some businesses received grants of up to $2500, but many did not. To be scrupulously fair, perhaps the Council should provide for all COVID-19 affected businesses, rather than those selected by Shire officers.

The Victorian Electoral Commission is preparing to deliver a safe election during the extraordinary circumstances of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Murrindindi Shire Council election will be conducted by post. It is described as a safe and completely secret method of voting.

Electoral Commissioner Warwick Gately issued a call to Murrindindi Shire residents and ratepayers to be ready to have their say.

“Make sure you’re enrolled correctly by the close of roll, which is 4 pm on Friday, August 28,” said Mr Gately. “ As this is a postal election, it’s important to check your address details are correct – this includes any alternative postal address.

“If you’re an Australian citizen and you’ve recently turned 18 or moved, and haven’t enrolled or updated your address, or if you've just closed your post office box with Australia Post, you can enrol or update your details online at vec.vic.gov.au/enrolment.”

Non-resident owners who were enrolled at the most recent election (including any by-elections) for Murrindindi Shire Council will be automatically enrolled. Applications close at 4 pm on Friday, August 28.

War 75th anniversary ■ This Saturday Saturday Aug. 15) marks the 75th anniversary of Victory in the Pacific and the end of the Second World War (WWII).

Tuesday (Aug. 18) is Vietnam Veterans' Day and the Sub-Branch would also like to recognise and thank the remaining six Vietnam veteran members. All are now in their 70s or 80s.

DV library upgrade

■ The Diamond Valley Library is set to undergo a major upgrade and Nillumbik Council wants to hear thoughts on the draft designs.

The $850,000 upgrade to the library in Civic Drive, Greensborough, is funded through the Victorian Government’s Living Libraries Infrastructure Program, Nillumbik Shire Council and the Yarra Plenty Regional Library Service.

The upgrade will create a series of zones within the library including: ■ An expanded kids’ zone with a new parents’ room, pram and bag storage.

■ A co-working zone for micro businesses with a meeting pod and personal study areas.

■ Community zone featuring a community meeting room with kitchen facilities, and multi-use area with seating for up to 80 people.

■ Book Express zone at the entrance with an information desk and Top 10 book displays.

■ Pop-up café and outside decking area.

■ Accessible unisex toilets.

■ Shared outdoor facilities including playgrounds, skate parks, barbecues and picnic tables in Murrindindi Shire must be closed to the public under Stage 3 restrictions.

All public toilets in Murrindindi Shire will remain open at this stage, with strict cleaning protocols in place. However the public toilet located within Bollygum Park in Kinglake will be closed, as there will be no public access to the Park itself. There are public toilets located nearby in Aitken Cres.

Stage 3 restrictions across regional Victoria ■ There will be a range of changes to how Murrindindi Council delivers its services from now until restrictions are due to be eased again on September 13.

Murrindindi Shire Mayor Cr Leigh Dunscombe said Council is doing everything it can to minimise the impact of restrictions on its services.

Stage 3 restrictions aimed at halting the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic are again in place in regional Victoria.

“Like everyone else, our first priority is to observe measures put in place to halt the spread of this pandemic,” Cr Dunscombe said.

“But we are thinking creatively about how to deliver our services in new ways that also meet safety standards during the pandemic.

“While our library and customer service centres are closed again, we are still offering library and customer services to our community we are just doing it a little differently.

“Our wonderful Customer Service staff will continue to answer your calls from their homes - just call 5772 0333.

“Please bear with us if you have difficulty connecting to our team - there is quite a strain on the mobile network at the moment and we are aware some calls are not making it through.

“You can of course also access a range of our services online or email us at customer@murrindindi.vic.gov.au if you need to access our services,” Cr Dunscombe said.

“Our library 'Book Butler' service is running at full tilt, so we will be able to deliver books, DVDs and audio to our members' homes - and pick them up again when they are done.

“We will of course do this while maintaining strict safely and hygiene procedures including through 'contactless' delivery, with our team wearing a mask and maintaining a safe social distance.

“All our returned library items are quarantined for three days before going out on loan again.

“Unfortunately, we have had to turn off the 'holds' function on our online catalogue, so there is no ability to reserve an item at the moment.

“But please give us a call to talk through your borrowing needs - our staff are happy to curate a selection of items for you, based on your particular preferences.

“And they might include a surprise or two in your delivery to get you to try something new.

Not a library member? No problem - just give us a call and we'd be happy to sign you up,” Cr Dunscombe said.

“We are also offering our 'Print and Post' service for those in the community who might need to print essential paperwork. “'Essential' paperwork includes documents such as government forms, official letters, resumes, Council forms and the like. Simply email your document to us at mls@murrindindi. vic.gov.au and we will print it for you and return it by post (or by car if our Book Butler happens to be driving past) - free of charge'.

“Our Maternal and Child Health Services

● Cr Leigh Dunscombe, Murrindindi Shire Council Mayor in Yea, Kinglake and Alexandra are continuing to operate, but by appointment only. Appointments for immunisations will also continue.

Masks are compulsory for anyone attending these sessions who is over the age of 12,” said Cr Dunscombe.

“Of course you will still see our outdoor crews out and about, and they will again be cleaning, putting up and maintaining signage and barriers around barbecues, playgrounds and skate parks.

“Public toilets will at this stage remain open (except toilets at Bollygum Park, as the whole Park will be closed to the public).

“We are also endeavouring to move all of our meetings online wherever possible, and that includes for meetings where we ordinarily would have met onsite',” Cr Dunscombe said.

Cr Dunscombe said Council understands the impact this second round of restrictions is having on individuals and businesses.

“We know many people are hurting right now and the resumption of restrictions is affecting not only many people's livelihoods, but in many cases is also increasing anxiety and stress levels, particularly for those who are isolated and can't see friends and family right now.

“This is especially true for those of us whose support networks might be living in metropolitan Melbourne, which is under even tougher Stage 4 lockdown restrictions.

“DindiLink is a service aimed at supporting those in our community who are vulnerable, isolated or in a high risk category for COVID-19 and who might need help in getting the essentials.

“There is more information here on our website or please give us a call - including if you know of someone who is in need of support,” Cr Dunscombe said.

“There is also a range of support available for businesses right now. If you'd like to learn more, please take a look at the COVID-19 Business Resources and Support section on our website'.

COVID-19 Briefs Stage 4 in Yarra Ranges Shire

■ Due to the State Government announcement of Stage 4 restrictions being implemented for businesses in metropolitan Melbourne, Yarra Ranges Council closed all of its community links from last Wednesday (Aug,. 5) until further notice.

“For community members who usually come into one of our community links to make a payment, our friendly contact centre team will be able to assist you over the phone,” a Council representative said.

“Our usual online channels will also be available for enquiries and payments.

“If you need assistance with accessing our online services, please don't hesitate to give us a phone call on 1300 368 333 or by emailing mail@yarraranges.vic.gov.au.

“We know this is a challenging time for everyone, please take care and we hope to be able to welcome you back to our links when restrictions ease,” the Council representative said.

Extra COVID case

■ Murrindindi Shire temporarily had a fourth COVID-19 case in official figures released by the Department of Health and Human Services late last week.

The fourth cumulative case, noted as the second active case in Murrindindi, was reversed from the list within 24 hours.

The existing case had a residential address in the Narbethong area. The extra case was speculated to be in the Kinglake area.

■ Lilydale Police are investigating an aggravated carjacking incident in Lilydale where a rideshare driver was threatened at knifepoint.

The rideshare driver was looking for business in the Lilydale area. When he asked a male at Yarra Valley Shopping Centre if he needed a ride, the male produced a knife and demanded money.

The male then stole the victim’s car, a silver Toyota Camry sedan (1PE9BE), and drove away at 12:30am on July 24. The vehicle was later recovered in Kinglake.

Snow in Ranges

■ Residents from parts of the Dandenong Ranges had something to smile about on August 4 as snow fell across numerous towns.

In what’s been a difficult year for many due to COVID-19, locals in suburbs such as Olinda, Kallista and Sassafras took some time to enjoy their brief winter wonderland.

Late in the afternoon and night, videos and photos were shared across social media of snow falls that blanketed towns.

Second hearing

■ Greater Dandenong Council will lodge an appeal against the EPA’s approval of a proposed waste-to-energy plant in Ordish Rd, Dandenong South.

The Council announced it will lodge its intentions to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal before the August 10 deadline.

It will be the second VCAT hearing on the controversial project, following a planning permit hearing in July.

Deputy Mayor Cr Margaret Rae says that while many have enjoyed seeing family and friends in the past couple of months, the recently reinstated 'Stage 3 Restrictions' for regional Victoria and even more stringent Stage 4 Restrictions in metropolitan Melbourne present an enormous challenge.

“We all understand the need for restrictions on our movements to stop the spread of this awful pandemic,” Cr Rae said.

“But we also need social connection to feel happy and well. Understanding this, our DindiLink service is here for anyone who may benefit from being connected to practical, emotional and social support.

“For example, if you need some emotional support and think you'd benefit from having a regular chat with someone, we can help put you in touch with like-minded locals.

“If you need practical help to get essentials or to make video calls to friends and family, we can connect you to organisations that can help.

“If you need food or material aid relief, we can connect you to emergency relief and also refer you to various support services.

“There is a range of social activities out there (that are now running online), including book clubs, fitness classes and volunteering groups.

■ The players. and committee of the Footscray Football Club held a motor picnic at South Morang during the week-end. On the way out the driver of the char-a-banc took the wrong turning and went ten miles out of the right road. On the way back the petrol supply ran out, and an hour was lost in securing more.

Despite these drawbacks, and the very. cold weather, the outing was a most enjoyable one.

Percy Maybury won both the long distance kick and a goal-kicking com petition. He refused to take the prize for the latter event, and it went to Frank Davidson. A sprint over 100 yards was won by Sam Holden, which suggests that the little wing man has more '"toe" than he is generally credited with possessing.

Lake credit where it’s due Sir, Thank you for providing a traditional newspaper covering local news, events and history.

I would like to draw your attention to some important omissions in your article covering ‘30 years of Lillydale Lake’, the article gave credit to the Shire of Lillydale and the Melbourne and Metropolitan Board of Works for the development of the Lake.

There was a third party involved; the Cavehill Group, which provided approximately half of the land and half a million dollars for the development of the Lake.

At the time, the Cavehill Group was a major property owner in and around the Lilydale area and is today known as Imran Holdings Pty Ltd. The company is still involved in the local area, in fact many of our founding unitholders or their descendants are still local residents in and around the Lilydale area.

It may also be of interest to your readers that the land on which the Box Hill Institute’s Lilydale Lakeside Campus is located on, also belong to us but was subject to compulsory acquisition by the State Gov-

DAREBIN ARTS GRANTS ● Ralph Knight ■ Community radio station 3CR 3CR has announced that long-term broadcaster Ralph Knight passed away on Friday, July 31.

Ralph presented music programs Nostalgia Unlimited, Swing and Sway and Steam Radio, as well as the Unitarian Half Hour, a program of the Melbourne Unitarian Peace Memorial Church.

“He made an enormous contribution to 3CR over the years both as a presenter and a radio technician and will be greatly missed at the station,” said a station spokesman.

Ralph’s career included a stint at commercial station 3XY, where he first earned the nickname of ‘Mr Steam Radio’.

Politics 41 publishers share in the cash

■ The Australian Communications and Media Authority has announced the successful grant recipients of the 2020 Round of the Innovation Fund.

Some 41 small and regional publishers will share in the $5 million available in the 2020 Round, to help them address some of the significant challenges facing the news industry.

The ACMA says it received more than 300 applications for the 2020 Round, almost three times the previous round.

The ACMA says it carefully assessed each application against eligibility and merit criteria and was assisted by an independent advisory committee appointed by the Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, Paul Fletcher.

From the large hotel chains that employ thousands to the retail stores, the travel and tourism industry is a vital part of the economy.

The Hollywood Sign ■ It's fitting that the Hollywood Sign, the worldwide symbol of the entertainment industry, was conceived as an outdoor ad campaign for a suburban housing development called ‘Hollywoodland’.

After all, despite the high profile of the film biz, real estate has always been Hollywood's primary economic driver.

Although the Sign's appearance and purpose have evolved over the years, its basic aspirational message remains the same: This is a place where magic is possible, where dreams can come true. Back then, the dream was a beautiful home and lifestyle.

Circus of Books ■ The Circus of Books documentary has been nominated for a 2020 Emmy Award.

The little documentary that could has been recognised for excellence by the television industry is in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Nonfiction Program.

Writers Rachel Mason (who is also director, producer and cast member) and Kathryn Robson (also a producer) could walk away with the coveted golden winged statuette holding an atom.

"I can't even begin to process how cool this is.” Rachel Mason posted on her Instagram account following the news of her nomination. "Me and my post production hero Kathryn Robson are nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing. This film was an absolute labor, and not always a labor of love, just labor but Kathryn steadfastly focused like no one I have ever seen and poured her heart into this movie so it could shine. She allowed me to be more vulnerable than I ever wanted to be. I couldn't be more proud that the Emmy voters are having us share this honor.”

■ Dogs with a few days of training are capable of identifying people infected with the corona virus, according to a study by a German veterinary university.

Eight dogs from Germany's armed forces were trained for only a week and were able to accurately identify the virus with a 94 per cent success rate, according to a pilot project led by the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover.

Researchers challenged the dogs to sniff out COVID-19 in the saliva of more than 1000 healthy and infected people.

"We think that this works because the metabolic processes in the body of a diseased patient are completely changed," Maren von Koeckritz-Blickwede, a professor at the university, said in a YouTube video about the project.

"We think that the dogs are able to detect a specific smell."

Dogs, which have a sense of smell around 1000 times more sensitive than humans, could be deployed to detect infections at places such as airports, border crossings and sporting events with the proper training, according to the researchers.

The study was conducted jointly with the German armed forces, the Hannover Medical School and the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.

Von Koeckritz-Blickwede said that the next step will be to train dogs to differentiate COVID samples from other diseases like influenza.

Junkies takeover Broadway ■ A woman injects herself with a needle near a pedestrian plaza at Broadway and West 40th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

It's the Great Black Tar Way. A cluster of junkies has turned Broadway into a shooting gallery, injecting drugs unhampered in broad daylight and then shuffling around in a zonked-out stupor, seemingly oblivious to the Midtown bustle around them.

If that wasn't enough, the addicts are peppering the area with used syringes, turning individual planters on 40th Street and Broadway into mini needle parks.

"They've taken over the tables, blatantly using needles and shooting up heroin all day long," said a local worker who asked that he only be identified as James.

"There's no police action, there's no reach-out.

“There's nobody preventing this, and you know we've had multiple calls to 311 but nobody really responds.

“It's becoming a real problem."

He called his own 311 calls "futile exercises”.

Several of the spent needles dumped at the scene and even caught one of the vagrants shooting up out in the open on Tuesday afternoon, with no one stepping in or saying a word.

■ Prominent podcaster Joe Rogan said that he's had enough of Los Angeles and is leaving for Texas.

"I'm outta here," Rogan said during a Friday interview with CEO of Spartan and Death Race, Joe De Sena.

Rogan told De Sena he is leaving LA for Texas "soon" because he wants to live somewhere that is "in the centreof the country, somewhere it's easier to travel to both places, and somewhere where you have a little bit more freedom”.

Rogan also cited LA’s overcrowding, which he says proves problematic in the age of COVID-19.

"When you look at the traffic, when you look at the economic despair, when you look at the homelessness problem that's accelerated radically over the last six, seven, 10 years, I think there's too many people here," said Rogan.

"I think it's not tenable. I don't think it's manageable. I think every mayor does a crap job of doing it, because I don't think anybody could do a great job of it.

“I think there's certain things you're gonna have to deal with when you have a population of whatever LA is, it's like 20 million plus people."

More American smoking ■ Americans are smoking more during the coronavirus pandemic because they are spending less on travel and entertainment and have more opportunities to light up.

They are also switching back to traditional cigarettes from vaping devices in the wake of federal restrictions on e-cigarette flavors.

Executives at Marlboro maker Altria Group Inc. pointed to the trends on Tuesday and said they have been significant enough to slow the years long decline in US cigarette sales.

Altria now expects US cigarette unit sales to fall by 2 per cent to 3.5 per cent this year compared with its previous projection of a 4per cent-to-6 per cent decline.

Pandemic lockdowns have meant fewer social outings and more time to smoke at home, Altria Chief Executive Billy Gifford said.

Though unemployment rates are high, stimulus checks and increased unemployment benefits have helped ease the financial hardship for low- and middle-income cigarette smokers, he added.

Adult cigarette smokers are making fewer trips to the store, but they are stocking up on packs when they do go.

"Fewer social engagements allow for more tobacco-use occasions," Mr. Gifford told analysts last Tuesday.

The company's Marlboro brand accounts for 43 per cent of all cigarettes sold in the US.

Sexual assault â– Detectives from the Sexual Crimes Squad have charged a man after the reported sexual assault of a woman in Shepparton.

Investigators have been told the victim was asleep in a private residence on Monash St when she was woken by a man in her bed and subsequently sexually assaulted about 3.30am on August 8.

A 28-year-old man, of no fixed place of abode, has since been arrested and charged with aggravated burglary, burglary, sexual assault and two counts of rape.

Avian flu outbreak â– Agriculture Victoria has confirmed that there has been a second egg farm in Victoria impacted by avian influenza. The farm has been quarantined and movement controls have been introduced to prevent further spread.

The egg industry is working with authorities to eradicate the virus with increased biosecurity protocols being implemented.

■ Clark Gable had an interesting life and will always be remembered for his role as Rhett Bulter in Gone With The Wind.

Clark was a very handsome man and was dubbed the ‘King of Hollywood’ in the 1940s.

Over the years I have conducted radio interviews with people who knew the famous actor.

Even ‘Clark Kent’ in Superman was named after him.

William Clark Gable was born in Ohio in 1901. He started out as a stage actor and then worked in small roles in silent films before landing supporting roles at the MGM Studios in the early 1930s.

At that time the young actor changed his name to Clark Gable.

In 1932 he was cast opposite Jean Harlow in Red Dust and the world started to take notice of him.

Clark was considered to play Tarzan The Ape Man but lost out to Johnny Weissmuller.

He was reluctant to accept the role in It Happened One Night opposite Claudette Colbert but it earned him his only Academy Award in 1934.

The following year he was again nominated for an Academy Awardfor Fletcher Christian in Mutiny On The Bounty.

I spoke to Judy Lewis who was the daughter of Clark Gable.

Judy told me the amazing story of how Clark and Loretta Young fell in love on the set of The

Call Of The Wild in 1935. When Loretta fell pregnant they decided that the scandal would ruin their careers and an elaborate cover story was developed.

Loretta went through the charade of pretending to adopt Judy from an orphanage and never told her who her real father was.

Judy only met Clark Gable on one occasion but found out after his death when a boyfriend told her, "Oh you're Clark Gable's daughter, everyone knows that!"

Sadly Judy passed away in 2010 but thankfully she had resolved her differences with her mother Loretta Young.

Clark's war record is amazing; he joined the US Army Air Forces in 1942 and trained as a

● Clark Gable pilot. He was eventually promoted to Captain and flew over Germany in bombing raids. Clark was awarded the Air Medal and the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service during WWII. The notable films of Clark Gable included Red Dust, It Happened One Night, San Francisco, Mogambo and Soldier Of Fortune.

In 1957 he starred opposite Doris Day in one of my favourite films Teacher's Pet. Sir Donald Sinden co-starred with Gable in the 1953 film Mogambo. When I asked him what he thought of Clark Gable his response was, "Oh Clark wasn't an actor at all. He was a superb technician, he looked lovely and the girls loved him.

“He knew all about making films but that doesn't mean he was an actor."

Clark was married five times but the love of his life was his third wife actress Carole Lombard who was killed in a plane crash in 1938.

His final film role was in The Misfits and many say it was the strain of making this film that led to his early death.

It is said he did smoke three packets of cigarettes a day. Gable was working with Arthur Miller, Marilyn Monroeand Montgomery Clift and he was quoted as saying: "The title sums up this mess. Miller, Monroe and Clift - they don't know what the hell they're doing. We don't belong in the same room together."

Clark Gable never worked in television productions.

Hollywood author James Bacon told me that the minute he heard that Clark had suffered a heart attack he raced to the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and arrived just as Clark was being wheeled in.

Clark said to James: "How's the food in this joint?"

Clark Gable died in the hospital 10 days later on November 16, 1960 at the age of 59.

Five months later his wife Kay gave birth to his only son John and Marilyn Monroe attended the christening. John Clark Gable has inherited his father's good looks.

Gilligan’s Island

While at Ten he made headlines worldwide with his report on the world’s first verified film encounter with a UFO . He won a Logie in 1985 for a doco he produced Frontline Afghanistan . Stars: ***½ Verdict: Good solid drama based on a true story that follows the efforts of Pentagon staffer Scott Huffman and numerous Vietnam veterans to see the Medal of Honour awarded to William H. Pitsenbarger, Jr, ("Pits) thirty -four years after his death, a United States Air Force Para-rescue-airman who flew in helicopter rescue missions during the Vietnam War to aid downed soldiers and pilots.

Sebastian Staff is compelling as the, at first cynical, Pentagon Staffer assigned to the task, as he unveils and battles present day political and bureaucratic incompetence every step of the way, and aided by a strong cast that includes Ed Harris, William Hurt, Samuel L. Jackson, and most notably Peter Fonda (in his final screen role) and John Savage (The Deer Hunter) as the Vietnam vets whose lives "Pits" saved, along with Christopher Plummer and Diane Ladd and the long suffering parents.

Brimming with well executed battle sequences, this is not without any minor flaws or weaknesses, but when all is said and done, writer-director Todd Robinson has created an extraordinarily well made journey, a gripping, moving, respectful, intelligent and poignant tale of a heroic young man and of people we will never otherwise know, who for a time too long ignored and forgotten, and only now long overdue in their well deserved recognition.

Stars: ***½ Review: A covert team of immortal mercenaries are suddenly exposed and must now fight to eliminate the threat of their powers and immortality from those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary, just as an unexpected new member is discovered.

Despite its familiarity with the unending list of super-hero movies in recent times, based on the graphic novel series and written for the screen by Greg Rucka, this latest addition to the genre is a well grounded and tremendously entertaining action-adventure filled with enough fresh inventiveness, unrelenting action and intriguing twists and turns to satisfy the most jaded palate, all driven by immensely likeable characters with uniquely historical backgrounds that spans centuries.

Characteristically, following such action fare as 2015's "Mad Max: Fury Road" and 2017's "Atomic Blond," star Charlize Theron returns to the action genre with an abundance of gusto and grit as the soul searching leader of the group with a commanding performance that separates her character from the more cliché driven pulp on offer, and is aided superbly by her loyal group of immortals that includes Matthias Schoenaerts (a French soldier who fought under Napoleon), Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli (who reign from The Crusades), KiKi Layne (as the newest member who served in Afghanistan), and Chiwetel Ejiofor (as a former CIA agent), among others.

With length and some exposition its only minor flaws, as formulaic as it may sound or be, overall, in a time when you think you may have seen it all, this works, and works well, a slick, well staged, full throttle, butt-kicking, adrenaline pumping ride that once all is said and done will have you wanting more! And don't miss the end credits.

A stunning mix of political intrigue and kinetic zombie mayhem, this Korean production was one of the best TV series shown in 2019, and with Season Two also streaming, now is the perfect time to indulge.

Set during the Joseon dynasty, the story centres on Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Ji-hoon), whose father, the King, has fallen ill to a mysterious disease.

The King has married the young Jo (Kim Hye-jun), daughter of Chief State Councillor Jo Hak-joo (Ryoo Seung-ryong), leader of the most powerful military clan in the country.

Forbidding anyone to enter the King's Palace chamber, the now pregnant Queen and Hak-joo hold power over the court, and to ensure the unborn child is the next heir to the throne, charge Lee Chang with treason, and because of this the Crown Prince has to keep his identity a secret, aided by his trustworthy guard Moo-young (Kim Sang-ho).

What the Prince doesn't know is that his father has become one of the undead (a situation which is explained), and due to a series of events, has spread the virus to the poor villagers in regional areas.

With Hak-joo and others desiring power and control by any means necessary, Lee Chang and his growing group of supporters, including medical assistant Seo-bi (Bae Doo-na), must stop this toxic, virulent virus before it destroys the entire nation.

Though the zombie sub-genre has been over-run with entries in recent years, this superb production is easily a cut-above the norm (it does bear similarities to the 2018 film Rampant), cleverly intertwining Korean history and social commentary with horror elements, and thankfully there is a first-rate cast and crew to bring this heady brew to exciting, intriguing life.

Kim Sung-hoon, who scored major success with the terrific cop comedy/thriller A Hard Day (2014) and the compelling drama Tunnel (2016), directs with style, intelligence and abundant energy, and again shows what a distinct filmmaker he is.

Aiding Kim's efforts is Kim Eun-hee, whose script (based on her webcomic) is superb, carefully building political intrigue and characterisation, drawing us into the heads of various characters and the journeys they are taking.

Kim is a considerable talent, for anyone who has watched the critically acclaimed TV series Signal

(a remake of the outstanding 2003 Bong Joon-ho crime thriller Memories Of Murder) will attest. The entire cast is excellent, including the always wonderful Bae Doo-na (Linda Linda Linda, The Host, Air Doll, A Girl At My Door, Tunnel), Ju Ji-hoon (The Spy Gone North, Dark Figure Of Crime) and Kim Sang-ho (The Big Swindle, The Tiger). The huge budget has enabled this to attain world-class production values. Kingdom is such a magnificent ride, filled with drama, action, horror, and people worth caring about. For those who did watch, that cliffhanger was a real doozy.

Kingdom Season 2

■ (MA) (2020). 6 Episodes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Back when Season One of this superbly crafted, hugely entertaining series ended on such a cliffhanger, it was immediately followed by a sense of almost anticlimactic disappointment, knowing we would have to wait twelve months before we discovered how that final scene played out.

Well, with Season Two now readily available, we can just binge both at once, and to say that the filmmakers ramped up the intrigue, action and gore is quite an understatement.

Returning characters include Crown Prince Lee Chang (Ju Jihoon), his loyal guard Moo-young (Kim Sang-ho), medical staff member Seo-bi (the marvellous Bae Doo-na), ruthless Chief State Councillor Jo Hak-joo (Ryoo Seung-ryong) and his equally scheming daughter Queen Jo (Kim Hye-jun), among others, and all have their own journeys to take, while the bigger picture begins to click together in ways that are both surprising and exciting.

Kim Eun-hee returns to script all six episodes, and while original director Kim Sung-hoon is on hand to direct episode one, the remaining five are helmed by Park In-je (Moby Dick), and he does an admirable job of carrying on his predecessor's exceptional handling of the material (the final episode is particularly spectacular).

The are a number of elaborate, eye-popping set-pieces (those who are squeamish will definitely want to avoid this), but like Season One, doesn't forget the characters who are trying to navigate this terrifying situation. I've deliberately steered clear of plot details for those who still haven't seen Season One.But if you thought the cliffhanger that ended Season One was frustrating, wait till you see how this latest entry concludes.

Legacy of WA’s Roe family ■ Queen Victoria granted John Septimus Roe, WesternAustralia's first Surveyor General, 3000 acres of land on the riverbanks at West Swan in honor of his 57 years of service to the Commonwealth.

He named the property Sandalford after a priory in England's Berkshire, his original home.

Sandalford eventually passed to John Frederick Roe, who took a keen interest in the fertile lands of the estate.

The property hummed to seasonal rhythms. Stone-fruit picking was followed by harvesting grapes until late autumn when the currants, sultanas and raisins were dried on wire-netting racks and the yearly task of seducing the soil into producing the next crop began all over.

John Septimus experimented with many varieties of table grapes that found their way to the new colony.

The bunches of wine grapes were left on the vines until a test revealed they had reached their desired sugar content.

The grapes were transferred by horse, lorry, and later a very impressive Chevrolet truck - to the nearby winery where generations of the Roe family oversaw pressing and bottling.

The estate flourished and wines produced from its vines satisfied the requirements of the local community and indeed further afield as the region's reputation grew.

Mare is back at her best ■ The showy chestnut mare aptly named, Brooklyn Hustle has at last had some luck in her races so far with one of the best victories you could see at Moonee Valley.

The mare, by Starspangled Banner, has been a constant worry to her trainer, Jason Warren, trying to correct her wayward ways from when she first started to race.

Going back to February last year, she competed in the Blue Diamond lead-up events, and in the final, where as usual she was slow away, and 13th at the turn, then laid out all the way down the straight, yet finished a good fifth to Lyre.

Her run before her big win at the Valley was back on November 19, in the star-studded Coolmore, where she ran a great fifth behind Exceedance.

She hadn't race since then, and when produced at the Valley, some critics said she had to show something there otherwise Jason would have the same old problems.

The run at the Valley was one of the best you could see.

As usual she settled back last, and her rider, Dwayne Dunn, was content to let her get her balance.

However, at the half way of the 600 metre event she was still well back.

Then around the 400-metre mark, Dunne started to get right along the fence, and she quickly came into it, but he was caught on the inside.

With a magnificent ride, Dwayne got her out and blitzed them, winning running away.

Jason said after her great win, it is still a worry with some of her bad traits, but hr would persevere, and hope she will get over her faults.

He would like to have another crack at the Coolmore Classic at Flemington over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Racing needs something like Blonde Hustler to lift our spirits at the present time, and she has got all the ability in the world.

Record sales

■ There is plenty of money about for good broodmares after a great sale at the National Broodmare Sale on the Gold Coast.

Just a couple of days after champion mare, Sunlight, was knocked down for $4.2 million, another couple of smart mares fetched plenty.

Sunlight, who had just turned four on August 1, was an outstanding galloper, winning Three Group One races, including the Newmarket Handicap at Flemington among her many victories.

At her last couple of races, she appeared to have had enough of going around, and her trainer, Tony McEvoy, and her owners, decided to call it a day, and we lost a good horse on the tracks.

At the sales the bidding for Sunlight was keen going up in $200,000 lots, before being knocked down.

Sunlight was the most expensive mare to go through the Magic Millions Sales ring on the her form tapered off as she went on. However, on her day, she was hard to beat.

She was knocked down to the powerful The good race mare, Unforgotten, an Oaks winner in Sydney, prepared by Chris Waller, Yulong Racing Group for $2.75 million.

It had been desperate to increase its foothold nationally, but is now left with just Victoria and South Australian races.

Racing Queensland and Sky Channel, which is owned by Tabcorp, has signed a new 10-year deal in involving the three codes of racing.

Tabcorp's top man said the growth during the past 12 months of Sky Racing in the state was a major factor behind the new arrangement.

It's bad luck for Racing. Com, and Victoria, missing out on Queensland, and also Western Australia.

We are all sitting home watching the races, but you have to keep switching between the two constantly to check on your bet.

Kilmore changes to regional zone ■ Kilmore has now changed zones, shifting from Metropolitan to Regional giving many of the district trainers the opportunity to race there.

This leaves only Tabcorp Park and Cranbourne in the zone.

Dasher’s drive ■ To some he may be called Dasher, Double Dee, Dazzles, Dash or just plain Daryl - I refer to Daryl Douglas who has returned to the harness scene in a big way after snaring a treble at Shepparton last Tuesday including what was the "drive of the night" aboard Art Major-Jodi Lindenny gelding Major Joe in the Saddleworld Shepparton 3Y0 Pace over 2190 metres showing that none of the magic has been lost after a four year hiatus.

Trained by brother Glenn at Strathfieldsaye, Major Jodi was restrained from outside the front line to settle at the tail of the field as last start winner Lets Make Tracks (Greg Sugars) crossed Jemsons Pet (gate three) to lead from gate four.

Trailing up the filly Safe Jewels in the last lap to be three wide approaching the final bend, Major Joe switched back inside her on straightening and after gaining a split in-between runners, finished with a wet sail to register a 1.8 metre margin over the pacemaker, with Allshookup 3 metres away in third place after racing uncovered. The mile rate 2-00.2.

Golden Wahine mare Golden Spurs. Raced by Seymour's Billy Morgan and partners, Golden Spurs was having her second outing since December and began swiftly from 20 metres to settle nice and handy in the moving line three back as Chris Svanosio sent Im Hector (10m) forward to take the lead away from Dream Over within a lap.

Commencing a forward move out wide prior to the home turn, Golden Spurs ran home strongly on straightening to record a 2 metre victory over Regal Assassin (three back the markers) and Tam Oshanter (four back), returning a mile rate of 2-03.

■ Young Terang trainer Paddy Lee produced an impressive Wishing Stone-Another Clare gelding by the name of Keayang Ninja to take the 2150 metre TAB Long May We Play 2Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile on debut in a rate of 203.3.

Given the run of the race one/one from gate two by brother Jason, Keayang Ninja after easing three wide approaching the final bend sprinted brilliantly to lead on turning and score by 1.3 metres from another first starter Sunsup (three back the markers) and Mustang Kelly which followed the winner throughout finishing 13.4 metres away in third place.

Stepping safely from barrier five to take over from Im Notta Trotter (barrier two) shortly after the start, Aldebaran Rocky was rated to perfection and had too much in reserve to hold off a determined challenge from John Meade's Whisp Of Smoke which raced outside him from the bell by 2.9 metres, with Im Notta Trotter third 6.5 metres away after using the sprint lane to no avail. Given a cosy passage three back in the moving line from gate two on the second line as Julius Shadow (gate four) led, Deadly Assassin ran home stylishly after trailing Goodtime Lollie momentarily three wide in the last lap before going four wide prior to the home turn and dashing clear on turning to record a 11.7 metre margin ahead of Presidential Art from last in a rate of 1-58.3. Just Call Me Mac (one/three) was third a nose back.

■ On what was a great night for the Western District, Scotts Creek part-owner/trainer/driver Xavier O'Connor snared the Goodtime Lodge Pace over 1680 metres with Too The Max, a 5Y0 ModernArt-Shenfields Lane gelding. Staring from the extreme draw, Too The Max first up since February possied four back the markers with David Murphy sending Metro Man forward from three back in the moving line to lead at the bell.

Angling away from the inside to be one/two in the last lap, Too The Max gained a beaut trail home on the back of Calvert Hot Shot (one/one) and when taken wide on the final bend, ran home stylishly to greet the judge by 2 metres from Mended (three wide last lap) in a 1-57.2 mile rate. Trent From Punchy (four wide home turn) was third a nose away.

Brilliant start

■ Racing returned to Echuca on Thursday and Lancaster part-owner/trainer/driver Carmel Belot enjoyed success when her reliable 6Y0 Majestic Son-Flash Muscles gelding Levina scored in the A and R Water Solutions Trotters Handicap over 2130 metres.

Beginning brilliantly from 20 metres to possie three back along the markers avoiding a few who were slow to begin, Levina angled away from the inside racing for the bell to trail the hot favourite Kraze which had moved outside the leader Get Smart Max. Easing three wide on turning, Levina gained a last stride half head decision over the pacemaker, with Kraze weakening slightly to be third 4.5 metres away. The mile rate 2-05.8. It was Levina's 6th victory in 78 outings.

■ Wahring trainer Sonia Mahar's Art MajorCharm Alarm filly La La Bron driven by husband Daniel Jack was victorious in the 1755 metre Ausure Insurance 3Y0 Pace.

Beginning quickly from four, La La Bron was unable to head off Van Niekerk outside her which exploded away to lead, with Jack angling to settle three back along the markers.

When Outside Fighter came away from the back of the leader on the final bend, La La Bron took his position and used the sprint lane to score by 1.3 metres over Van Niekerk and Outside

■ Tabcorp Park Melton raced on Friday and for the second week in succession at headquarters, Lance Justice provided the trifecta in the fast class event - the TAB Long May We Play Pace over 2240 metres with the less fancied of the three Jean Luc ($14.50) defeating Rishi ($3.50) and Love Ina Chevy ($3.60).

A well performed 5Y0 gelded son of Bettors Delight and Sacajawea raced by Colin Croft of Sokyola fame, Jean Luc driven by Melton's Ken Tippet led out from gate two before taking a trail on the heavily supported Rishi (gate three) to receive the run of the race.

Always in control apart from a mid-race niggle from Forty Thieves, Rishi was headed by Jean Luc along the sprint lane in the shadows of the post but came again to go down by a half head in a tricky finish, with Love Ina Chevy third 2.1 metres back after following the pair.

The mile rate 1-57.2.

■ The week before, Rishi ($7.50) again led before being run down by Love Ina Chevy ($6.80) which gained a late split from three back the markers, with Jean Luc ($19.90) a nose away third after trailing the leader and using the sprint lane. The mile rate 1-53.4 over the shorter trip of 1720 metres.

■ Lara co-trainers and owners Danny and Gill Norris two of the nicest people in the business landed the 2240 metre Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile with sit/sprint specialist Desert Flyer in a rate of 2-03.4.

In an interesting affair where positions chopped and changed several times, Desert Flyer driven by Jack Laugher was trapped wide from outside the front line before going forward to cross the leader Pats Son, then handing over to Chief Running Cloud.

The favourite Hatchback came away galloping going back to the tail, before being sent forward to park in the open prior to gaining a one/one spot when Imperial Whiz circled the field to race exposed.

With runs coming from all direction on turning, Hatchback on straightening put in his claim before again breaking and Desert Flyer using the sprint lane to race clear and score by four metres in a rate of 2-03.4 from Pharisee (one/ two - three wide trail home turn), with Chief Running Cloud holding down third 1.5 metres away. An 8Y0 Pegasus Spur-Desert Chase mare, Desert Flyer recorded her 18th victory from 118 race appearances for stake earnings just short of $200,000.

Planning for Lodge started in 1868 Tongue in cheek remarks

● The original 1868 advertisement calling for the formation of a Masonic Lodge at Alexandra.

Source: Alexandra Times, June 2, 1868 ■ The Albert Edward Lodge in Alexandra will this year celebrate the 152nd year of its original formation meetings in 1868.

An advertisement was placed in the first issue of the Alexandra Times on June 2, 1868, calling for “all free and accepted Masons in and around Alexandra to meet at the office of Brother M. Raphael ... to consider the practicality of forming a lodge”.

Maurice Raphael was an “auctioneer, land and hotel broker” who conducted offices at Grant St, Alexandra.

Some say the ‘Albert Edward Lodge’ was formed on August 20, 1868. Brother William Downing was the founding Master.

He was also appointed to the newly created position of clerk and rate-collector for the Alexandra Roads District in the same year.

The Alexandra Times newspaper notes the consecration of the Lodge took place on July 23, 1869.

Earlier in 1869, a letter was sent to the Alexandra Road Board from J.P. Bainbridge “requesting the use of the Board room for Masonic purposes”.

First meetings of the Lodge were said to be held at the Corner Hotel.

Alexandra Times publisher John Whitelaw, in 1869, compared the works of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Masonic Lodge.

“Amongst other emblems of the order might be seen the open hand with a heart in it,” Whitelaw told a concert held at the Corner Hotel.

“This meant that Odd Fellows had an open hand for each other, and a heart to feel and sympathise for a brother in distress.

“If an Odd Fellow becomes sick he is supported and provided with medical attendance.

“When he dies all funeral expenses are paid for by the lodge, and the widow and orphan children have a certain allowance given them.

“Such an institution as this commends itself to the support and best wishes of all.

“The Mount Pleasant Lodge (MUIOOF) was progressing favourably, and he trusted that the funds would be considerably enlarged by that evening's entertainment.

“As to those ladies and gentlemen who had kindly consented to take part in the concert, most of them had already established for themselves a high reputation as amateurs.

“He trusted that the audience would: " Be to their virtues very kind, And to their faults a little blind."

“On Friday night last the important ceremony of opening a Masons' Lodge in Alexandra took place,” The Times noted on July 30, 1869.

“In addition to the brethren of the immediate district, there were visitors from Melbourne, Jamieson, and Doon.

“The Lodge was held in the Council Chambers, and was opened

by Past Master Goulding, who, with the assistance of Past Masters Rapiport, Motherwell, Morris, and Whitelaw, duly installed the Worshipful Master elect, Brother Downing, according to ancient custom.

“After the ceremony of installation had been completed, six new members were proposed.

“The ordinary and special business having been disposed of, the Lodge was closed in due form and with solemn prayer.

“After the duties of the Lodge, the brethren assembled at Brother Morris's, and sat down about 11 o'clock p.m. to the installation ban quet.

“To say that the table groaned with luxuries, would convey but a faint idea of the artistic taste of the decorations and the excellent quality of the good things provided in such profusion.

“Mr Morris evidently was determined to place himself A1 in the matter of getting up a supper.

“Twenty-two Masons took their seats at the table, and as the order is very exclusive, no strangers were admitted.

“After supper followed the usual masonic toasts, accompanied with masonic honors,” the Times noted.

On August 6, 1869, the newspaper recorded: “The Masonic Lodge of Alexandra has now been fully established, and promises to be come an important institution.

“The furniture and regalia have been provided. Amongst other matters, we notice that Brother M. Raphael has presented the Lodge with a handsomely bound illustrated Bible, with the following golden inscription on the cover :— "Presented to the Albert Alfred Lodge(sic) ofAlexandra byBrother Maurice Raphael."

At the end of 1870 the Lodge was indeed an important part of the Aleandra district, causing one Council meeting to be cancelled, due to a Masonic Ball being held at the offices.

“Crs. Peterkin, Perkins, and Whiting, (agreed) that there should be no Council meeting, on account of the Masonic Ball,” said the December 30, 1870, issue.

● John Whitelaw Photo: Alexandra Fire Brigade ■ The first publisher of the Alexandra Times newspaper, John Whitelaw, had his tongue firmly in his cheek when he was compere of a grand concert and a ball held at the Corner Hotel by the Manchester Unity IOOF in June 1869.

Mr Whitelaw, who delivered the opening address, stated that although he did not belong to the order of Odd Fellows still he knew a little about secret societies.

There were three degrees in masonry. In the second degree the apron was placed behind, and then he had to swallow a mixture of salt, senna, and castor oil.

It was very amusing to see the faces they made on such occasions, but the third degree was the trying event.

The apron (masons can do nothing without an apron) in this degree was placed on the head and then the brand is applied.

It made one’s blood run cold to think of the cruelty they practised on each other on such occasions.

He had heard of unfortunate masons catching their death of cold in consequence of the curiosity of their wives about that branding.

The Odd Fellows, he supposed, were not much better than the Masons, but it was his duty to briefly allude to their good points.
