6 MORE CASES IN MITCHELL ■ FEARS are ongoing that Coronavirus cases may migrate from nearby Hume municipality into Mitchell Shire.

The number of cases in Hume, as at Monday (July 27), was 810, with 381 of them active. Hume stands at number 3 on the state’s tally of most COVID-19 cases, behind Wyndham and Brimbank.

There are six more virus cases in Mitchell Shire compared to this time last week.

As at Monday, Mitchell had registered 33 cases, with 13 of them still active.

● Leche Radalj, 13 ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing teenager Leche Radalj.

The 13-year-old was last seen at Wellington Square Shopping Centre in Wallan about 3.30pm on Saturday (July 25).

Leche is described as 155cm tall with a slim build and dark hair with blue highlights.

She was wearing all black clothing and was carrying one black and one brown bag.

She is known to frequent the Geelong and Moorabbin areas.

Police have released an image of Leche in the hope someone recognises her and can provide information regarding her current whereabouts.

Anyone who sights Leche or has information about her whereabouts is urged to contact Geelong Police Station on 5225 3100.

■ Fifteen men in 10 teams played 4 Ball Best Ball on Wednesday (July 22) with the team of Ray Partridge (26) and Bill Dredge (21) winning by threepoints with a total of 46. Second on CB was the team of Wayne Rowe (13) and new member Lachlan Wischer (25) with 43 points.

Individual Winner was Ray Partridge with 42 points from second Lachlan Wischer with 41, third with 38 was the consistent Brian Simmons (11). NTP on the 18th was Lachlan Wischer and the Club Award went to Neil Ross and Bill Dredge.

Saturday saw the second round of the Barry Moore Trophy played at Yea Golf Club. Leader of the first round Kevin Coghlan (19) was able to post 36 points and secure a three-point win from second Wayne Rowe (13) who posted 35 points. Winner of the day on CB was Martin Lowe (17) from Carl Maffei (23) with Kevin third all on CB with 36 points. Fourth was Wayne, with fifth Brian Simmons (11) 34 on CB from PhilArmstrong (23).

Fatal at Hilldene

■ Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash which occurred in Hilldene on Friday afternoon (July 24).

Investigators believe a motorcycle veered into a ditch at the corner of Seymour-Pyalong and Ash’s Bridge Roads about 12.25pm after the rider lost control of the bike.

The motorcyclist, believed to be a man in his 60’s, died at the scene.

M’dindi fuel bill ■ Murrindindi Shire Council’s current year’s budget for fuel, oils, lubricant fluids and card fees is $376,200, it was revealed at last week’s meeting.

“Council spent approximately $907,000 on fuel and oils over the last five years of the previous contract,” a report said.

Councillors unanimously agreed to approve the continued use of Business Cards Australia Pty Ltd for the purchase of Council’s fleet and plant fuel, oil and lubricant fluids commencing immediately, and ending on March 31, 2023, with the option for a further two individual one year extensions for a total contract value of $1,320,000

Dumper caught

● Helen Doober ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing woman Helen Doober.

The 44-year-old Greensborough woman was last seen in Studley Rd, Heidelberg about 4.30pm on Friday, (July 24).

Police and Helen’s family have concerns for her welfare as her disappearance is out of character.

Helen is approximately 160cm tall with a medium build, brown straight hair and blue eyes.

She was last seen wearing black pants, black jumper and black shoes and she was carrying a satchel.

It is believed she is driving her 2014 grey Holden Cruze sedan bearing registration ZQX157.

Anyone who sights Helen or her vehicle is urged to contact the Heidelberg Police Station on 9450 8000.

■ Mitchell Shire Council’s local laws officers have fined a resident more than $300 after covert cameras caught them red-handed illegally dumping waste along Old Sydney Rd. The resident admitted to the crime when questioned and was directed to take the waste to a nearby Resource Recovery Centre.

Mitchell Council is continuing its call out to the community to Dob in a Dumper and provide any information from a recent spate of illegal waste dumping in the area.

Clothes, rubbish bags and other items were strewn across multiple areas. In some cases, once dumped materials were cleaned by Council, more rubbish would appear in the same spot.

“This case is a strong message to our community that we’re out there actively trying to reduce illegal dumping within our community. It is extremely disappointing to know that this person was a resident and could have easily taken the waste to one of our Resource Recovery Centres,” said Mitchell Mayor Cr David Lowe.

Whitehorse Truck Centre tendered for the lump sum price of $234,717.00 (incl. on road costs and GST) for the supply and delivery of a new tip truck. The matter was resolved at last Wednesday’s Council meeting.

■ People are entering Murrindindi and Mansfield Shires from Melbourne without undergoing COVID-19 checks, Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish says.

“I have had many calls from locals concerned about the ease in which people can enter the non-lock down shires of Mansfield and Murrindindi,” Ms McLeish said.

“It is easy to travel into country Victoria either avoiding or passing through checkpoints.

Public transport is also not checked.

"The current situation allows people from Melbourne to catch V-Line buses to Yea, Mansfield and Eildon, without being questioned or temperature checked.

“There are no checks on the V/Line trains and buses for people boarding at Southern Cross Station heading to Seymour and Benalla and connecting into Murrindindi or Mansfield Shire."

"This is distressing for locals and businesses as there is no monitoring of people coming and going from restricted areas into non-restricted areas."

● Mitchell Council workers plant new trees at Wallan.

Four replacement trees are now standing tall in Wallan’s Avenue of Honour. The Avenue itself, made up of Ulmus x Hollandica Purpurascens – or elm – trees, is dedicated to the memory of Wallan soldiers who served during World War I. The original Avenue was planted in 1920.

The four trees had to be replaced because of their poor health and possible impacts on public safety. Mitchell Shire Council, in partnership with the Kilmore-Wallan RSL SubBranch, planted the four and a half metre tall trees on July 20 – the 104th anniversary of the Battle of Fromelles.

Positive ageing in Dindi ■ Murrindindi Shire Council continues to assist older citizens, Deputy Mayor Cr Margaret Rae told last week’s meeting.

“Whilst our seniors quite rightly have a lower profile these days, Council continues to work with them and provide assistance in a number of ways,” Cr Rae said.

“I am pleased to advise that Council has received funding through the Victorian Government Community Connector Program to assist with the continuation of this program over the next six months.

“This will support the expansion of the Dindi Link Service and will support people who are isolated and impacted by COVID-19 to connect to a range of services and to develop community connections.

“In addition we have worked with our local service network to support the Dindi Link program to begin to develop initiatives that will support community connections for vulnerable and isolated people.

“Our Access and Inclusion Committee continues to hold regular meetings by Zoom and has an active Strategic Planning program focusing on future projects and initiatives,” Cr Rae said.

n Even though Mitchell Shire Leisure Centre doors are closed, residents can still stay connected through our online classes.

The Leisure teams are hosting free online sessions to keep community members fit, focused and having fun during the COVID-19 closures.

Kinglake Pub closes ■ The Kinglake Pub closed on Saturday afternoon (July 25) “until further notice” after a staff member came into contact with a person who has been confirmed to have COVID-19.

Hotel owner John Holmes said the decision to temporarily close the business was taken as a precautionary matter until the results were back.

“The Victorian Government directive is that we could remain open until a positive result is received,” Mr Holmes said on social media.

“To anybody who has been in the pub for any length of time over the last seven days please refer to the Victorian Government DHHS website for further advice and information and of course if you have been experiencing any symptoms yourself please get tested,” “Let’s hope everything turns out OK,” Mr Holmes said.

“There are some fantastic recordings of the talented young people in the Murrindindi shire.

“The Murrindindi Youth Leadership Program has commenced with some young people from all different parts of the Murrindindi shire which is fantastic.

“They’ve had a couple of sessions already and I look forward to seeing the outcome of the emerging and young leaders in the program,” Cr Bisset said.

Land use planning ■ Cr Margaret Rae, Deputy Mayor, spoke of land use planning, at last Wednesday’s Council meeting.

“Over the last quarter the number of planning permit applications is slightly down; however, the number of building permits issued is up and, I might add, significantly up on last year at the same time,” Cr Rae said.

“This is, of course, a natural cycle with one consequent on the other. It is worth reflecting on the fact that a permit for a subdivision is one application but results in a number of building applications with the attendant lift in economic activity.

“It is pleasing to see several of these developments taking place at present.

“From tonight’s meeting it is evident that there continues to be a high level of professionalism, engagement and detailed consideration of all planning applications.

“Planning officers continue to engage closely with applicants and the community by holding consultation meetings where people can express any concerns they have and engage directly with the applicant.

“I have attended a number of these and appreciate the opportunity to hear directly from all participants,” Cr Rae said.

Go for it: Mayor ■ Murrindindi Mayor Cr Leigh Dunscombe is encouraging people who think that they may have something to offer to seriously think about nominating soon for the elections “It truly is a privilege to serve your community as a Councillor and to contribute in a way that very few get to experience.

“But don’t be fooled, it’s not all milk and honey, there are long days, stressful conversations and many tough decisions that you will have to make, and many of those decisions won’t be universally popular or accepted.

“You will face ridicule, your motives will be questioned and on rare occasions you may face verbal abuse, but the rewards are there as well, perhaps not financially, but in many other ways, the sense of community you feel, appreciation for your efforts and the knowledge that you are doing all you can to make our shire a fairer and better place.

“To see the look on a families faces when their dream home gets approval, the joy of a community group receiving a grant for a community project, or playing your part in building community infrastructure and laying the foundations for your communities future.”

“If you are doing it for the right reasons then it’s all very well worthwhile so go for it.”

Murrindindi Matters COVID-19 impacts

■ Cr Sandice McAulay offered a wide-ranging report at last week’s Murrindindi Council meeting: “Council held an online community consultation session to seek input from individuals and groups on the impacts of COVID19,” Cr McAulay said.

“The valuable information collected through this session is being used to guide the development of the COVID-19 Community Transition Plan that will outline the relief and recovery actions that Council and our service partners will be taking to support our community.

“Over 150 community members participated in this important session.

“I was subsequently so pleased to participate in the planning workshop which was held to develop the important fourth year of the Health and Wellbeing Plan.

“This plan will also include the relief and recovery actions that Council and our valuable service partners will be taking to support the community.

“About 30 representatives of about 17 of our community health partners took time out of their busy schedules to help contribute to these important plans but most importantly to commit their respective organisations to the implementation.

“It is only with the combined effort of Council with our community health partners that we ensure the success of both the health and wellbeing and the relief and recovery plans.

“Not one organisation can tackle this on its own. So thank you to those community members, representatives and organisations who participated in these valuable sessions.

“Council, in partnership with the Children’s Services Network are hosting a professional development forum with Wendy Bunston, a renowned child and family support specialist.

More seats at Mt Evelyn ‘I would say my original commitment when I first came to Council would be fulfilled’ ■ Mount Evelyn community members will have more seating and shading at sporting events when restrictions end, with grandstand works underway at the Regional Athletics Facility at Morrisons Reserve.

An extra shade structure has been installed at Morrisons Reserve, as well as works to double the size of the existing grandstand, with more shade infrastructure to follow.

Billanook Ward Councillor, Tim Heenan, said that when COVID-19 restrictions are eased in coming months, community members would have more seating and shade for events.

“I’m very proud to see this happen, over many, many years of campaigning, to make sure that the children and adults alike have the most upgraded facilities possible here,” he said.

“We’ve doubled the size of the grandstand and with this shade structure that we have on part of the ground – with more to come – has been a great boon for Yarra Ranges Athletics members.

“We know how popular Morrisons Reserve is for our local athletics and sporting clubs, and they regularly have all the seats filled here for

“I’ve listened and obviously heard the need. The carpark here is fully sealed and all designated parking, which is fantastic.

“This is a project I have wanted to see in Mount Evelyn for many years. Once we get more shade infrastructure on the other part of the grounds, I would say my original commitment when I first came to Council would be fulfilled.”

Yarra Ranges Council has

an ongoing goal of creating quality infrastructure and liveable places in Yarra Ranges, to ensure communities are safe, resilient, healthy, inclusive and socially well-connected.

“This project has provided a more inclusive experience for people visiting our sporting events,” Cr Heenan said.

“This is the only athletics facility we have in all of the Yarra Ranges. I’m enormously proud that there is more seating and more shade now.

“I hope there will be more people coming to be part of the Yarra Ranges Athletics Club once the COVID-19 situation is over.”

Under the current Stage 3 Restrictions, residents may leave the house for one of four reasons: exercise, medical care and caregiving, shopping and work or study when it can’t be done from home.

People may gather outside in groups of two at most, with social distancing at all times.

Exercise should be done locally.

As of last Thursday (July 23) people over the age of 12 must wear masks or face coverings outside, unless undertaking strenuous exercise like running.

Community members may use the running track at Morrisons Reserve, however they are encouraged to practise social distancing, sanitise their hands often and use a face mask when not running.

Nillumbik Council acts on soil dumping ■ Soil dumping at Chapel Lane, Doreen, was the focus of a report on radio station’s 3AW Rumour File segment last week.

Cr Karen Egan, Mayor of Nillumbik Council, issued a statement calling for the State Government to act immediately on the dumping.

“We call on the Minister for Planning to initiate immediate reforms to State planning provisions in order to enable councils to regulate soil and fill-dumping within their boundaries,” Cr Egan said.

“This incident yet again highlights a significant issue facing peri-urban councils, an issue we have raised previously.

“The existing Victorian planning provisions greatly inhibit Council’s ability to act on this issue.

“Council is however, seeking legal advice to determine whether a breach of the Nillumbik Shire Planning Scheme may have occurred.

“As we’ve seen, the effects of fill dumping in a Green Wedge Zone are not limited to the site of the works.

“The damage to surrounding roads and infrastructure along with disruption to the local community can be considerable.

“Without proper planning control and the ability to carefully consider and monitor such activity, soil dumping could lead to irreparable damage or costly, time consuming remediation works.

“Of particular concern is the potential for damage to land used for food production, to our waterways and ecosystems.

“Council has commenced works to repair the damage to local roads as a result of the increased volume of heavy trucks used to deliver the fill to the sites on Chapel Lane.

■ Arts Centre Melbourne and the Australian Music Vault are hosting a new project called Vault Sessions, streaming to audiences on Thursdays from 'the best seat in the house' - their couch.

The first run of artists includes Alice Skye, Ziggy Ramo and Cash Savage and the Last Drinks, playing intimate sets from Hamer Hall.

Cash Savage and her heavy rock band the Last Drinks will stream on Thursday, August 6 at 7.30pm and will be available for two weeks until Thursday, August 20 at 7.30pm.

Come To Where I Am ■ After a rigorous selection process, 16 new plays about the places that shape us are destined for both live performance and digital distribution for Come to Where I Am – Australia, the new writing and performance initiative from Paines Plough and Critical Stages Touring, an Australian national touring theatre company.

In response to a rapidly changing world, where all touring and live performance is currently on hiatus, Paines Plough launched Come To Where I Am. In partnership with theatres across the UK and beyond, 30+ new short plays from writers about the places they call home have been shared with online audiences as visual-audio pieces.

All donations made to this project go directly towards employing writers to deliver more new writing during COVID-19.

Come to Where I Am – Australia was initially created to support the development of seven new stories, engaging writers in regional and remote towns to craft a snapshot of what life is like in their part of the country right now.

The program has been recently expanded to accommodate an additional nine writers thanks to a COVID-19 support grant from the Australia Council for the Arts and private donations.

The 16 stories come from across the country and represent a mix of rural, regional, suburban and city experiences from a diverse group of authors that includes award-winners Samah Sabawi (Vic.), MaryAnne Butler (NT), Jeanette Cronin (Qld), Vanessa Bates (NSW) and comedian Jon Bennett (SA).

Highlights include a story of music and connection between generations in Western Sydney from James Elazzi (Lady Tabouli); a treechange tale from Tahli Corin (One for the Ugly Girls) and Joshua Tyler (Top End Wedding); and a new piece weaving together old and new stories of the Noongar people from Wilman Noongar artist Ian Michael (HART).

Since 2010 Paines Plough have engaged more than 160 playwrights with invitations to write and perform short plays about their home towns and the places that shaped them, distributed globally through their smartphone and tablet app – Come to Where I’m From.

The new Australian works will be produced as video postcards, filmed on location by the writers in the region they are writing about.

It is intended that the short films will live beyond their initial digital premieres, with live performances to be staged at venues across the country when restrictions are lifted. They will also be hosted on Paines Plough’sYouTube channel.

Come to Where I Am – Australia is part of a broader digital production and engagement strategy undertaken by Critical Stages touring in response to the pandemic.

● Katelyn Bannister and toddler Hugo enjoying Baby Bilby Sings ■ Victorian Opera has been a trailblazer in introducing youngsters to opera, either by involving them as performers or in creating accessible operas for the next generation of opera goers.

With no live performances with an audience in the time of COVID, VO has continued its reputation for innovation, creating a new interactive online story and songbook called Baby Bilby Sings that you can enjoy with the ankle biters.

Not being yet blessed with grandchildren, I gave it a trial run on my own and I'm hooked.

The story follows the adventurous young Baby Bilby who decides he is off to see the world, and he does it by visiting many different countries, each with a strong connection to a particular opera.

He visits the worlds of La Traviata, The Barber of Seville, and The Magic Flute, among others.

Each adventure includes a button you push to hear music from all those famous operas, with repurposed lyrics from accompanist Phoebe Briggs and Victorian Opera head Richard Mills.

Adult opera goers will enjoy hearing the glorious voices of Victorian Opera's younger singers - Carlos Barcenas, Raphael Wong, Shakira Dugan, Eliza Bennetts O'Connor and Rebecca Rashleigh.

Victorian Opera's Education Manager, Ioanna Salmanidis, is delighted that this book will help children of all ages engage with opera.

"Through reading our book, we hope that children across Victoria and far beyond will experience just how special opera can be," Ioanna explained.

Artistic director Richard Mills composed the refrain heard throughout the story, and is pleased that Victorian Opera has been able to create this online project.

"Baby Bilby Sings is one of many projects and programs we're offering for our communities to enrich our collective spirit throughout this pandemic," he said.

Victorian Arts Lumas Gallery ■ Lumas Gallery and Sequana Arts Grant announce the first recipient of theirArts Grant Program: Prudence Bansemer from Victoria.

Prudence's winning submission Pink Lake was inspired by the increased threat of climate change and increasing awareness of the importance of global ecosystems.

Pink Lake was shot at Melbourne's Westgate Park where Saltwater Lake's rosy hue has become a tourist attraction.

The lake's pink colour is due to a combination of high salt levels, high temperatures and lack of rainfall. The lake - which first turned pink in 2012 and has been changing colour every summer since - could be considered a litmus test of the effects of climate change.

The program marks both Lumas Gallery and Sequana Partners commitment and dedication in support of ventures and community programs at grass level.

The program aims to empower artists by recognising the craft and livelihood of the incredible pool of talented Australian artists.

Applications for the next monthly grant are open until Friday (July 31) and will be awarded each month until December providing a oneoff grant of $4000 as well as host each winner's work in an exhibition in January to showcase the six winning artworks.

National Gallery Tour: Collecting Comme Video tour with Senior Curator Danielle Whitfield Join Senior Curator of Fashion and Textiles, Danielle Whitfield, on an immersive video tour of Collecting Comme and discover works by visionary designer Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons.

Collecting Comme examines the radical concepts and design methods that have informed Kawakubo's practice since 1981, the year she first presented in Paris.

Showcasing more than 65 outfits by the visionary designer, drawn from more than 40 collections, the exhibition will also include 13 additional works designed by Kawakubo's protégés Junya Watanabe and Tao Karihara.

Tolarno Galleries The Sun Also Sets - an exhibition of new works by Danie Mellor Comprising sepia-tone paintings overlaid with indescent wash as well as large-format photomontages, the series signals a new approach for the Mackay-born artist.

"There's an important sense of remembering throughout my work," says Mellor.

"We're part of a conversation with history, one often mediated by mages. I have a strong connection to, and feeling for photography from the late-colonial era because our family archives goes back to 1908.

“These and other early images have shaped how I approach image-making, as way of re-examining nostalgia and how that relates to the emotional ache of separation and distance."

The Tolarno Galleries will reopen in August.

The Burrinja Story ■ In the mid 1990s four regional shires were amalgamated into one: Sherbrooke, Lilydale, Upper Yarra and Healesville became Yarra Ranges.

The forme Sherbrooke Shire Offices in Upwey became 'redundant'. In 1996 the Commissioners put the building and surrounding depot land on the market in attempt to reduce debt.

The local community fought back to save their building. Numerous organisations and individuals were involved in the fight to save the building, such as United Neighbourhood of the Hills Save Our Sherbrooke Association, Save the Dandenongs League and others.

Among the many who marched in the streets to demand that the shire office become a cultural centre for the community were indigenous artist and local resident Lin Onus.

In 1997 the first motion put through the newly elected Shire of Yarra Ranges Council by Cr Louis Delacretaz was that the Sherbrooke offices be taken off the market.

A business plan for a proposed Dandenong Ranges Community Cultural Centre was presented to Council and a Special committee of Council was established to form the DRCC. It became an independent incorporated body in mid-1998 with Louis Delacretaz as President.

The Vision The centre's vision was "to be a vibrant community cultural centre offering a total Dandenong Ranges arts, cultural and environmental experience providing for a diverse range of local need".

Neil and Lin Onus had been the best of friends. Just days after the largest meeting to establish the Cultural Centre, Lin died suddenly of a heart attack.

Neil named the gallery 'Burrinja' in memory of Lin. 'Burrinja' was Lin's Yorta Yorta name meaning 'star'.

In the year 2000 the DRCC became a Regional Arts Victoria Arts Council member.

Together A real turning point in the future direction, growth and tenure of the cultural centre came in 2000 with the negotiation of a three way partnership between the Shire of Yarra Ranges, Neil McLeod fine arts and the DRCC. Neil McLeod donated a million dollar indigenous art collection to Council, with its home to e at Burrinja gallery.

The DRCC took on the management of the collection on behalf of the shire, as well as the gallery and café.

From 2001 the operations of the DRCC and Burrinja were combined under the not-for-profit cultural association.

Refining the Vision: In 2001 the Committee developed and adopted a new more succinct vision that brought together the aims and vision of the Centre building community through art.

The centre undertook a comprehensive view of its activities and spaces, its past and future.

The focus is needed to be on what the centre does, not its name.

In choosing just one unifying name Burrinja was the obvious choice, its heritage with Lin Onus grounds it in the history of the centre and the fight to save the building.

It also places the centre in the arts, in indigenous arts and in activism in local community.

Digital Theatre Festival ■ The National Institute of Dramatic Art this month invites audiences around the world to join the journey of Ghost Lights, a transmedia production being staged as part of NIDA’s 2020 Digital Theatre Festival.

“At the beginning of this pandemic, every theatre in the world was closed. That never happened before,”said Director, projection and new media artist Katy Alexander.

“We were seeing all these amazing images of empty cities, like the Eiffel Tower and Sydney Opera House with no one around, and that got us thinking about empty theatres – where do all the characters go? That’s really where the concept came from.

“As all performance venues across the world went dark, the old tradition of the ghost light was revived - leaving on a single naked bulb on a stand inside the theatre - to ensure that an empty theatre is kept ‘alive’ and never left in total darkness,” she said.

Australian and international audiences are now invited to take part and help keep ghost lights, characters and the magic of theatre alive by uploading a monologue on social media.

Participants are asked to prepare and record a monologue from their favourite play and upload it to social media using the #ghostlights community + #ghostlights2020

16 Lullabies

■ Melbourne-based composer Hugh Crosthwaite last week released an album of 16 Lullabies recorded by Australian pianist Stefan Cassomenos.

In response to the intensity of the global pandemic, the lullabies were written in less than a month and recorded over two sessions with engineer and producer Myles Mumford.

On composing the lullabies, composer and producer Hugh Crosthwaite said: “This project has been such a joy. Each lullaby is for a specific person, the children of my closest friends and family.

“It’s precious to me because each dedicatee is precious. Working with Myles and Stefan has similarly been wonderful. There is something beautiful about three fellas, working together, applying their hard-earned expertise, for the sole purpose of creating beautiful gentle music.

“Lullabies provide a safe space for the listener to unwind; to celebrate our connection to music as human beings.

“This meditative album is for all the new parents seeking comfort in the early hours of the morning, to those who are feeling anxious about the current global health situation, and for those who are lonely seeking attachment and care.

“That’s what lullabies are supposed to do, soothe the soul, and herald rest and renewal.

“Having Melbourne’s favourite pianist Stefan Cassomenos at the keys on this album provides more than just a bond between each musical work.

“Stefan’s passion and expertise resonates through each lullaby, resulting in a beautiful collection of songs that are relevant to today and these uncertain times,’’ said Hugh.

Inspired by a wide variety of music, Hugh Crosthwaite’s music is influenced by the classical music of the late 19th and early 20th century as well as popular and alternative rock music of the 1990s.

Crosthwaite has written commissions for Sarah Curro, The Melbourne Youth Orchestra, the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Plexus Collective; as well as recently collaborating with ZEDSIX on The Shape of Jazz.

Last Qantas 747 leaves Australia ■ Hi everyone, from my suite at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites comes this week's news.

Out and About

A380 will be next ■ Qantas's last passenger jumbo jet, the Boeing 747, has departed Australia for the final time.

Flight QF7474 flew out from SydneyAirport last Wednesday afternoon (July 22).

The jumbo jet is headed to retirement in the 'Bone Yard' in the Mojave Desert in the United States, after Qantas brought forward the scheduled retirement of the fleet by six months due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The aircraft has served Australians for almost 50 years and revolutionised aviation.

Alan Joyce, Qantas Chief Executive Officer, said, "It's brought the Queen in, it's brought the Pope in, it's been there for every Olympics team since the 1984 Olympics."

The 747 service has also rescued Bali bombing survivors and Australian residents trapped in Wuhan when the COVID-19 pandemic began.

"It's a bittersweet moment, this aircraft has changed world aviation, Australian aviation and Qantas," Mr Joyce said.

Qantas is the largest non USA carrier using Los Angeles Airport. There were 43 flights between LAX and Australia every week.

Fifty years ago the 'Queen of the Sky' Qantas 747's opened up aviation to ordinary Australians travelling overseas.

Australian baby boomers would recall their first flight on Qantas overseas and the magical time was when it landed back in Australia you would hear on the overhead speakers, the song I Still Call Australia Home.

The Qantas A380's are also in line to be sent to the 'Bone Yard' in the Mojave Desert as its days are numbered.

What will emerge out of COVID-19 will be a more efficient and sleeker airline.

■ Over the Fourth of July weekend, with streams of sweat pouring down his face, Joey Chestnut broke his own world record for hot dog eating, by downing 75 hot dogs (with buns) in 10 minutes at the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.

It was his 13th win at the annual contest.

And Miki Sudo set a women's record, 48.5 hot dogs, to grab her seventh straight.

Because of the Coronavirus crisis, the event was held virtually this year, and Dr James Smoliga was glued to his screen, rooting for new records.

For the past few months, Dr Smoliga, a veterinarian and exercise scientist, had been working on a mathematical analysis of the maximum number of hot dogs that a human could theoretically consume in 10 minutes.

"The answer is 83," said Dr. Smoliga, a professor at High Point University in North Carolina.

He has now published the full analysis, which calculated this number based on 39 years of historical data from the Nathan's contest, as well as on mathematical models of human performance that consider the potential for extreme athletic feats.

Virus-laden droplets ■ A large cloud of virus-laden droplets can be released high into the air when you flush a toilet and it can hang around long enough to be inhaled by others, a new study says.

The new Coronavirus can be found in the feces of infected people, and this finding suggests it could be transmitted through the use of toilets, according to the authors.

The study was published June 16 in the journal Physics of Fluids.

"One can foresee that the velocity of upward-flowing aerosol particles will be even higher when a toilet is used frequently, such as in the case of a family toilet during a busy time or a public toilet serving a densely populated area," study co-author Ji-Xiang Wang, of Yangzhou University in China, said in a journal news release.

■ A Washington Post editor said that the Texas Rangers team name "must go."

On the same day that the National Football League's Washington Redskins announced it would do away with its 93-yearold team name, Global Opinions editor Karen Attiah said that the Major League Baseball team must deal with "the violent and racist implications of its name."

"To know the full history of the Texas Rangers is to understand that the team's name is not so far off from being called the Texas Klansmen," Attiah wrote in an op-ed for the liberal newspaper.

Attiah, who grew up in Dallas, reminisced about going to Rangers games with her father as a child, but said at the time she didn't know the Rangers "were a cruel, racist force when it came to the nonwhites who inhabited the beautiful and untamed Texas territory".

The Texas Rangers were unofficially created by Stephen F. Austin in 1823 as a statewide investigative law enforcement agency, headquartered in the capital of Austin.

The Rangers stopped the assassination of President William Howard Taft and pursued such outlaws as Bonnie and Clyde.

More than 120 have died in the line of duty.

■ New Yorkers are rapidly discovering why European-style outdoor dining isn't really a thing there. According to a report from NBC New York, diners who have been forced outside by pandemic restrictions keep getting attacked by the city's greedy rats. Giacomo Romano, who owns an Italian restaurant in SoHo, told the network: "We have this big restriction of only outdoor seating and last night, a customer had a baby rat running on his shoe and I let you just imagine his reaction." Romano said he's written to city leaders begging them to do something about the rodents if his customers are going to be eating outside for the foreseeable future. "If they know every month they need an extermination then do it," said the restaurateur. NBC New York asked the city if it plans to do anything to tackle the rats, but reports that it has, so far, heard nothing back.

■ The Catholic Church raked in at least $1.4 billion in taxpayer-backed loans meant to help small businesses survive the coronavirus pandemic, a new report says.

Catholic dioceses, parishes, schools and other entities made extensive use of a loophole in the Feds' Paycheck Protection Program to snag at least 3500 forgivable loans as the pandemic scuttled worship services across the country, an Associated Press review found.

Some $200 million went to roughly 40 dioceses that have paid out hundreds of millions of dollars to victims of sexual abuse in recent years including the Archdiocese of New York, which receivedat least $28 million for its executive offices while its iconic St Patrick's Cathedral received at least $1 million, according to the Friday report.

The so-called PPP loans were generally limited to businesses and nonprofits with fewer than 500 employees.

But Catholic officials helped lobby the Trump administration to exempt religious groups from that rule, which would have disqualified many dioceses.

Data released this week indicate Catholic institutions may have bagged as much as $3.5 billion in forgivable loans that helped them retain at least 407,900 jobs placing the church among the program's largest beneficiaries.

Americans are more tired ■ The Coronavirus pandemic has many Americans saying they're more tired than they've ever been before.

According to a new survey, six-in-10 Americans say their sleep routine during quarantine has them feeling more exhausted than they've ever felt in their life.

The poll of 2000 adults, commissioned by Leesa Sleep, finds nearly 70 per cent agree their sleeping habits have become quite inconsistent.

Another 63 per cent think their sleep schedules might be permanently ruined by the pandemic.

Working remotely has its benefits, like sleeping in later, but it may be creating some bad habits too.

Forty-four percent say they stay up later since they don't have to commute to work.

Nearly half of respondents admit they get out of bed only 10 minutes before their remote workday starts.

It's no wonder so many people are tired. Many are staying up late to binge watch their favourite TV shows.

Researchers report 67 per cent of Americans are staying up until the early hours of the morning to sneak in a few more episodes each night.

The poll also finds Americans are also to getting an average of two naps per week during their workdays.

■ I vaguely remember watching the Our Gang short films at my local cinema in the late 1940s and I used to read the Our Gang comics.

It was a strong influence on young children and we formed gangs of our own so that we could play together, have fun and imitate the characters in the film series.

My favourite was Carl ‘Alfalfa’ Switzer because he had a funny strand of hair sticking up on top of his head.

The series was originally titled The Little Rascals but it was changed to Our Gang in 1938 over a copyright issue.

Carl Dean Switzer was born in Paris, Illinois, in 1927. As a child Carl and his older brother Harold sang in local shows.

In 1935 the boys were visiting their grandparents in California and wanted to see the studios where the famous Little Rascals series was filmed.

They did an impromptu performance of hillbilly songs and comedy at the studio cafeteria where they were spotted by the producer Hal Roach.

Roach was so impressed with the boys that he cast them in one of the short films.

Carl was given the name of ‘Alfalfa’ and Harold became ‘Deadpan’ or ‘Slim’.

Carl became a very popular character along with George ‘Spanky’ McFarlane, Billy ‘Buckwheat’ Thomas and Daria Wood.

Carl acted in 61 short films and was known throughout the world.

In 1941 Carl Switzer left the series at the age of 14.

Comedy, It’s a Wonderful Life, Going My Way, The Track of the Cat, White Christmas and The High and the Mighty.

Carl married Dian Collingwood in 1954 they had one child but the marriage only lasted for two years.

By 1956 he was reduced to playing an uncredited slave in The Ten Commandments.

Carl dreamed of making a big comeback but

He did earn a reasonable living working as a dog breeder and hunting guide with some notable clients such as Roy Rogers and James Stewart.

On the night of January 21, 1959, Carl had been drinking heavily at a bungalow home in the San Fernando Valley and got involved in an argument with a man over a payment of $50.

The argument turned into a fight and when Carl allegedly charged at the man with a knife he was shot in the stomach and died on arrival at the hospital.

The trial resulted in a verdict of “justifiable homicide” but there are some who think Carl was murdered and he only held an unopened pen knife. But after all this time who knows the real truth?

Carl Switzer was buried at Hollywood Memorial Park.

He was only 31 – and like many famous child actors, Hollywood turned its back on him when he grew up.

Some 50+ years ago when they arrived in Melbourne for their one and only concert they stayed at the Southern Cross Hotel.

Upon arrival at the hotel they were met by 10,000 screaming fans.

The boys escaped to an upstairs room overlooking fans, begging for their appearance. Tired from a overseas flight they hit on an idea to pinch four cleaning mops.

They dyed the mop heads black, rested the mops in front of a window looking down on the distant crowd as the Beatle boys took a breather from an exhausting flight. Their trick on fans was orchastrated by hotel staff who were in on the prank.

Little bit of Elvis

■ The guitar Elvis used between 1954 -56 is to be auctioned, starting price $ 1.2 million,and expected to be knocked down for $ 3 million.

Deadly Earnest passes

■ One of the real characters of the early days of Melbourne TV, Ralph Baker has died of Myeloma, aged 81.

Ralph was a born entertainer, starting at local theatre, then to minor comedy sketches for In Melbourne Tonight on GTV-9.

Next stop was ATV-0 – now Ten - the new station on the block and Ralph took a job in the Props office .

ATV-0 was screening late, late night movies, mainly re-runs of scarry goulish films. Ralph raided the Props cage and created Deadly Earnest, a vampire character leaping out of a coffin. Deadly was an instant success with a young audience. He went onto floor manage pop shows - Kommotion, Uptight, Go!!Show before launching his own p0uppet theatre. Vale Ralph.

Nicole’s blockbuster

■ Nicole Kidman’s production company Blossom Films has signed onto to produce a blockbuster movie Nine Perfect Strangers. Location will be Botany Bay. The film will offer work to many local Aussies including Nicole who has offered her property on the NSW Southern Highlands for the production crew to live during pre-production and the mandatory isolation period due to COVID-19 .

Apart from Nicole, otherAussies slated to star include Asher Keddie and Samara Weaving.

■ Publishers announced they have decided to stop publication of eight titles in Australia –Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, In Style, Men’s Health, Women’s Health, Good Health, NW and OK. All editorial and production staff have been sacked despite being told by management in May they would resume publishing by September. Management has blamed it all on COVID-19.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs FILM: RESISTANCE: Genre: Biography/Drama/History.

Cast: Jesse Eisenberg, Clemence Poesy, Ed Harris, Matthias Schweighofer.

Year: 2020.

Rating: MA15+ Length; 120 Minutes.

Stars: *** Review: The story of a group of scouts who worked with the French Resistance to save the lives of thousands of orphaned children by leading them to safety cross country and through mountainous terrain with the Nazi's in pursuit to Switzerland during World War II. Gripping and fascinating story based on true event holds interest throughout, and even though formulaic in approach, there's barely a dull moment as the events unfold, an historical journey of arrogance, brutality tenacity, survival and heart that is sure to surprise many along the way, most notably when one of the youthful key heroic protagonists is revealed to be future comic and mine legend, Marcel Marceau.

Jesse Eisenberg gives a solid enough performance as the young and naive Marcel Marceau as his persona changes due his ongoing connection with the children, and a surprise performance by Ed Harris as General George S. Patton, Jr., however, it is Clemence Posey as the female leader of the group, Emma, that captives with a performance of total conviction and believability that holds a strong grip throughout, along with Matthias Schweighofer as the brutal Gestapo head Klaus Barbie, "The Butcher of Lyon," most notably in a scene on a train with children that will ensure that your nails will be shorter by scene's end.

Handsomely mounted, with superb period detail, production and costume design, any flaws aside, even if Marcel Marceau wasn't involved in these events, it is still a story well worth telling, but this little known story of war and history is best summed up as a yet another strong, effective and haunting reminder of the brutal Nazi regime in 20th Century History, innocence lost, and how the spirit and power of art can overcome.

Stars: ***** Review: The life of one of America's foremost founding fathers and first Secretary of the Treasury, Alexander Hamilton.

Originally intended for cinema release by Disney in 2012 and brought forward to streaming as a result of the Covid-19 crisis, this filmed adaptation of the live Broadway production from the Richard Rodgers Theatre with the original Broadway cast, is a hugely entertaining and tremendously energetic production that blends its storytelling musical form through hip-hop, jazz, R&B and classic show tune styles, making the entire canvas as relevant today as it was over 200 years ago, and barely lets up for its 160 minute running time.

Star Lin-Manuel Miranda as Thomas Hamilton, also Writer, Co-Producer, Composer & Lyricist, Stage Production Director, leads a stellar cast that includes Chris Jackson as George Washington, Daveed Diggs as Thomas Jefferson/Marquis de Lafayette, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and most notably Jonathan Groff (Mindhunter) in a standout, roof raising performance as King George, all aided by a spectacular ensemble cast that brings it all to a dynamic and vivacious reality.

Captured for the cameras over three performances with a taut and respectful grip by the Emmy award winning director of 2016's "Grease Live," Thomas Kail, costume design, production design and editing all fall into place to reveal gloriously colourful, overwhelmingly engaging, exciting and indisputable heartfelt musical experience that transports its audience into the world of the Broadway show in a uniquely intimate way, and an irony that one of the best films of the year should come from the stage.

Rating: PG. Length: 91 Minutes.

Stars: ***** Verdict: Wonderfully macabre black comedy from Britain's legendary Ealing Studios of five eccentric criminals planning a robbery who find themselves living with a little old lady for cover as musicians, but when the gang set out to kill her things don't quite go as planned.

Rourke’s Reviews Villain ■ (R) (1971). 98 minutes. Now available on Blu-ray.

Beautifully restored, this somewhat underrated British crime drama may not be in the same league as the classic Get Carter (1971), but this brutal film has earned the cult following it has built up over the decades.

Richard Burton plays Vic Dakin, a notorious gangster who deals with any rivals (or problems within his organisation) with extreme violence, allowing him to rule the neighbourhood with an iron fist.

When he agrees to take part in a daring payroll robbery, where he has to team up with an outside crew, Vic's hold on power begins to waver, especially with Scotland Yard's Bob Matthews (Nigel Davenport) close on his tail.

Based on the antics of the infamous Kray Brothers (particularly Ronnie), writers Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement (Porridge, The Commitments, The Bank Job), and director Michael Tuchner (Fear Is The Key), infuse the material with streetwise grit, graphic violence, and a dark sense of humour.

Burton is terrific as the flamboyant Dakin, and is well supported by Davenport, Ian McShane, Donald Sinden, and Joss Ackland.

Time To Hunt ■ (MA). 134 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

After attracting major attention on the festival circuit in 2011 with his debut feature, Bleak Night, it has been a very long wait to see what director Yoon Sung-hyun's next film would be.

Thankfully the wait is finally over with Time To Hunt, a dark, dour action/thriller that effectively shows characters trying to survive in a collapsing society, while also delivering some superb set-pieces.

Set in the not-too-distant future, we are introduced to Ki-hoon (Choi Woo-shik, who played the son in the Oscar-winning Parasite) and Jang-ho (Ahn Jae-hong), childhood friends who are barely keeping their heads above water in a polluted country where the gap between rich and poor has never been wider.

South Korea has been suffering a major financial crisis, causing their currency to crash, thousands of businesses to fold, and leaving millions of people unemployed, with a growing number forced into homelessness.

The two greet another longtime friend, Jun-Seok (Lee Je-hoon), who is being released after serving three years in prison for a robbery gone wrong, and during celebratory

drinks, accompanied by Sang-soo (Park Jeong-min), he suggests they steal from the gambling house where Sang-soo works.

Hesitant at first, the other three are eventually convinced by Junseok's scheme, but of course things don't go completely to plan.

Using the age-old 'heist-gonewrong' premise, writer/director Yoon adds a number of layers to the scenario, incorporating various political and social commentaries to the crime mix, all seen through the eyes of these four young men who have experienced this corrupt, violent world for most of their lives.

Some elements have suddenly become relevant to how COVID19 has crippled global and local economies, the growing prevalence of government surveillance and access to private data (Taiwan doesn't seem like a random choice of destination either), while it's also fascinating that this brutal environment is run wholly by men, with women almost completely absent from the landscape (apart from Ki-hoon's mother, women are only seen in the background as either essential workers or gambling molls).

The long break certainly hasn't dimmed Yoon's ambitions, and even though the world he creates could have been a whole movie in itself, his focus is on the four protagonists, and this attention to the human factor is another aspect of why this is a cut above the usual slick concoction of big-screen mayhem.

The entire cast are terrific, and all make the most of the time devoted to their characters' development, but stealing the film Park Hae-soo, who is simply mesmerising as Han, the killer hired to take out the amateur robbers.

Yoon doesn't skimp when it does come to action and suspense, and his execution of these sequences is first-rate, with highlights including confrontations in a hospital and underground garage.

Though some have compared his meticulous stylings here to Michael Mann (Heat), I would make comparisons to Kim Jeewoon (A Bittersweet Life).

Adding immeasurably to the atmosphere is the cinematography by Lim Won-geun, and it is incredible that this is his first film (just check out Jun-seok's encounter in a bar).

Though the plotting does require the audience to occasionally suspend disbelief, Time To Hunt is a heady mix of social commentary and tense, violent action, and after that long hiatus, Yoon cements his standing as a genuinely talented film-maker.

I just hope we don't have to wait another nine years to see what he does next.

RATING - ***½

State of Emergency ■ Local singer song writer Mark Gardner is releasing his new EP State Of Emergency.

The five track album will be available digitally and also in CD format.

Angullong 2018 Fossil Hil Sangiovese ($28): Sangiovese is one of Italy's most popular varieties We have a number of types (clones) of sangiovese vines in the vineyard that are maturing well having been planted close to 20 years ago. This red is a mediumbodied wine with lifted and vibran aromas of violets, blueberries and dried herbs. The elegant flavours of blueberry, sour cherry and spice are complemented by savoury herbal complexity and soft balanced tannins. This is a wine to enjoy with traditional Italian fare including ragu, pizza or antipasti.

WINE OF THE WEEK Angullong 2018 Fossil Hil Tempranillo ($28): This red was fermented in open fermenters followed by maturation in new (20 per cent) and used oak puncheons for 12 months.

While tempranillo is still often described as an emerging variety here it is the actually the tenth mos crushed Australian red variety and is my pick of the new Angullong reds. Treat it as you would a cabernet sauvignon and you won' go far wrong.
