BORDER WATCH ON HUME

■ HEALTH officials are keeping a keen watch of Coronavirus cases just over the municipal borders of Mitchell Shire.

Hume, Brimbank and Moreland municipalities are in the national spotlight after recording a spike in COVID-19 cases in the past week.

Fresh case in Mt Aitken area of Craigieburn, alerts issued

and focus of testing over the coming days.

The total cases from a North Melbourne family outbreak, with all of them also being close contacts of known cases, is 15.

A Coburg family outbreak, with a known close contact returning a positive test., brings the total number of cases linked to this outbreak to 15.

A case has also been notified in a healthcare worker linked to the Orygen Youth Health facility in Footscray. It is believed the worker completed shifts while infectious.

The Victorian Government has announced a tightening of the rules and has reduced the number of visitors you can have in your home to five. Outside of the home, people can now gather in groups of up to 10 only.

There are major concerns about a case at the Mt Aitken area of Craigieburn. Mitchell Shire residents often shop at the Highlands and Criagieburn Central shopping centres.

Residents in these local areas are being cautioned by Premier Daniel Andrews to stay at home. Locals are being refused entry to caravan parks and tourism venues elsewhere in the state.

The Victorian Government aunched a targeted blitz across 10 priority suburbs with a team of 800 testers to zero-in on community transmission with a fleet of mobile vans.

Residents of these suburbs will receive free testing – with or without symptoms.

On the advice of the Chief Health Officer, priority suburbs include Keilor Downs, Broadmeadows, Maidstone, Albanvale, Sunshine West, Hallam, Brunswick West, Fawkner, Reservoir and Pakenham, with Keilor Downs and Broadmeadows identified as the top two

● People can have a test for Coronavirus. Testing stations have been operating over the past days at Craigieburn and Epping.

The total number of coronavirus (COVID-19) cases in Victoria is 2099, with 75 new cases reported on Monday The overall total has increased by 71, with four cases reclassified.

Within Victoria, 14 new cases are linked to outbreaks, 37 new cases have been identified through routine testing, 23 cases are under investigation and one case was detected in a returned traveller in hotel quarantine.

Virus Updates Pandemic alters travel patterns

■ The Satte Government says it is making it easier for people and goods to get around Melbourne with better technology, more specialist staff and stronger enforcement of clearways in response to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Ben Carroll, Minister for Roads and Road Safety, this week unveiled a $340 million package of measures to make it easier for people and freight to get around on our roads.

The Coronavirus pandemic has dramatically altered the way Melburnians move around the city with more people now expected to use cars to get around.

The number of people making trips on Melbourne’s roads each day is increasing, with road traffic now only 17 per cent below normal levels, while passenger numbers on public transport are 71 per cent less than the same time last year.

To keep Melburnians moving during this time, the Government is ramping up direct traffic interventions by tasking more response crews and traffic engineers with tackling congestion hotspots, incidents and blockages on the network.

Three key traffic hotspots in the western, eastern and south eastern suburbs of Melbourne will also be blanketed with the technology and resources to help keep traffic moving, reduce delays and provide drivers with better traffic information.

Almost 700 CCTV cameras will be installed to identify bottlenecks as soon as they start and more than 200 wireless travel time sensors and 40 new visual message boards will put live traffic data in the hands of our traffic management centre and drivers.

Six extra incident response crews and dozens more specialist traffic engineers will be hired to keep our roads moving around the clock – creating jobs and reducing delays from unexpected events.

The timing of hundreds of traffic lights – along with traffic patterns and crash data – will be analysed and re-sequenced to maximise traffic flow along some of the busiest routes in the targeted areas.

Clearways across inner-Melbourne will also be strongly enforced with new penalties for those that park illegally and all arterial road clearways within 20 kilometres of the CBD will be strengthened to tow-away zone status.

Road occupation charges to charge developers for blocking precious lanes on arterial roads during building works will recommence from July 20, after they were suspended in response to the Coronavirus outbreak.

“This is a comprehensive plan to create more space on Melbourne’s roads and keep people and goods moving as we continue to respond to the coronavirus pandemic. For more information visit vicroads.vic.gov.au,” Mr Carroll said.

“The way we travel around Melbourne has been massively impacted by the coronavirus pandemic – our plan will mean people spend less time stuck in traffic and more time at home with their families, said Ben Carroll, Minister for Roads and Road Safety.

“We’re building more roads and adding lanes through our unprecedented Big Build – now we want to ensure our entire road system works as efficiently as possible as we continue to deal with coronavirus.”

Temperature checks ■ Travellers and accommodation operators will benefit from on-site temperature testing over the school holidays, with infrared thermometers being distributed across the state to help keep Victorians safe.

About 4800 thermometers are on their way to holiday locations as part of the Victorian Government’s efforts to slow the spread of coronavirus. In addition, coronavirus testing clinics will be established at popular destinations on the Great Ocean Road and in the Alps: Lorne, Apollo Bay, Falls Creek, Mount Hotham and Mount Buller.

Accommodation providers with communal facilities will be given priority access.

Coronavirus emergency ■ Some 75 new Coronavirus cases were reported across Victoria on Monday (June 29).

The total number of Coronavirus (COVID19) cases in Victoria was 2099.

The overall total increased by 71, with four cases reclassified.

To date, 20 people have died from Coronavirus in Victoria.

There have been 271 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that have been acquired through unknown transmission. There are currently 288 active cases in Victoria.

Currently, nine people with coronavirus infection are in hospital, including one patient in intensive care. 1789 people have recovered from the virus.

Of the total 2099 cases, there have been 1772 in metropolitan Melbourne and 247 in regional Victoria. The total number of cases includes 1104 men and 993 women. More than 792,000 tests have been processed to date.

“Of today’s new cases linked to outbreaks, one case is linked to the North Melbourne family outbreak - bringing the total in this outbreak to 22,” said Monday’s statement by the Department.

“Three new cases are linked to the Brimbank family outbreak – bringing the total number of cases in this outbreak to nine.

“A link has been established between these outbreaks. Three new case are linked to the Stamford Plaza Hotel, taking that outbreak total to 23 and three new cases are linked to a Truganina family outbreak, taking that total to five.

“One new case is a close contact linked to the Wollert outbreak – bringing the total number of cases in this outbreak to 10. Three new cases are linked to a new family outbreak in Patterson Lakes and Lysterfield – bringing the total number of cases to four.

“Cases are linked to a number of new schools including Queen of Peace Parish Primary School in Altona Meadows, Aitken Hill Primary in Craigieburn, Maribyrnong College, Footscray High School, Port Phillip Specialist School and Al-Taqwa College, Truganina.

“All schools will undergo a deep clean of affected classroom and common areas, and close contacts will be required to quarantine.

“Guardian Childcare and Education in Abbotsford has closed for cleaning until Wednesday following a positive case in a child.

Cleaning and contact tracing are under way.

“Other key cases include a healthcare worker at The Melbourne Clinic in Richmond. Close contacts among patients and staff have been identified and contacted, and the facility will be cleaned and the outbreak squad is visiting today.

“A staff member at the Red Cross processing facility Lifeblood has tested positive.

Contact tracing is under way and cleaning has been undertaken.

“This is the 13th consecutive day of doubledigit case growth in Victoria, with a continuing and concerning number of new cases associated with transmission in households and families.”

■ Testing for COVID-19 can give some much-needed information to help understand and manage this viral infection on an individual, local, national and global level.

“The most reliable way to test someone for a current COVID-19 infection is with what we call a PCR test, which is the test being administered at the COVID-19 clinics around the country right now,” says Dr Jill Thistlethwaite, medical adviser at NPS MedicineWise and GP. “A PCR test can detect the virus which causes COVID-19 if it’s present on a swab, usually taken from the back of your nose and throat.”

Mitchell Youth Council is divided into three wards; North, Central and South. Three members of Youth Council represent the North Ward, six in the Central Ward and three in the South Ward, making a total of 12. At the moment the South and Central wards positions are occupied, so officials are looking for three new members to represent the North.

Junior footballers are going to miss their sport in 2020. AFL Goulburn Murray has confirmed that the Seymour District Junior Football Netball League season has been cancelled for 2020.

● Tania Maxwell MLC Northern Victorian MLC Tania Maxwell says that all CFA volun teers should wear a black armband with their uniforms as the new Fire Rescue Victoria fire service comes into effect from today (July 1). Ms Maxwell called on the incoming temporary CFA Chief Executive, Catherine Greaves, to publicly release the draft agreement and commit to not signing the document until volunteers were given the opportunity to scrutinise the agreement and provide feedback. Ms Maxwell said she joined with her fellow CFA volunteers across Victoria in being disheartened and concerned by the lack of consultation, evidenced by the recent resignation of CFA Chief Executive, Steve Warrington.

“Volunteers feel let down and unappreciated by this entire process and it is heartbreaking,” said Ms Maxwell. “For many of them, this may be the last straw. Unfortunately, I fear the death of the volunteer fire service.”

Kinglake, Alex pull out of 2020 footy ■ Kinglake and Alexandra have withdrawn from any participation in a 2020 season which might be run by AFL Outer East.

“Given the current circumstances in Victoria, the Kinglake Football Netball Club can no longer guarantee the health and safety of its players, volunteers and supporters,” said the Kinglake club in a statement late last week.

“This coupled with the financial impact to the club and the extra workload required by a dwindling volunteer base, with some volunteers understandably indicating they would prefer to stay away through this period, is what has led us to make this tough decision.

“As restrictions allow, we intend to hold Thursday night dinners and certain functions to give our players, volunteers, members and the wider community an outlet to stick together through this difficult period.

“We want to thank our playing groups for the effort they have all put in through the pre-season and in recent weeks since returning to training, we especially want to thank our senior football coach Andrew Fairchild and our senior netball coach Latoya Wards for their continued hard work, both have endured heightened stress levels through this period and we all appreciate their efforts in doing what’s best for our club,” the Kinglake Football Netball Club announcement said. ★ At Alexandra, Club President Ray Steyger made a similar announcement on Monday: “With the Senior competition, the Club has advised the AFL Outer East that we have opted out for the 2020 season and will not be fielding any football or netball teams.

“Other Clubs have advised the League that they have made the same decision with the League set to make an announcement next week as to the 2020 season.

“The Club will continue to give players and coaches for both Juniors and Seniors the opportunity to train within the current restrictions.

“If and when restrictions ease sufficiently to allow safe and practical use of our rooms, the Club will look to restart social activities.

“We hope to organise a Patrons Day function, albeit late in the year, again dependant on restrictions allowing this type of event,” Mr Steyger said.

“A number of patrons and sponsors have paid their annual fees which is much needed revenue that will assist the Club to get through these difficult and unprecedented times.

“We still have incoming accounts for utilities, equipment and operating costs so this income is extremely important.

“If you would like to pay you’re 2020 patron membership or sponsorship fees, or part thereof, the Club will be extremely grateful,” Mr Steyger said.

“We will now look forward to the 2021 season and push towards retaining all current players and building on our teams for a rejuvenated 2021 year of the Rebels ★ The Kinglake club’s statement said : “ We have a great group of coaches and players in both football and netball and we can all look forward to an exciting 2021 season.

“Over the past few months, we have been in constant communication with the AFLOE league regarding an effort to return to football and netball competition.

“It has been a gruelling process of uncertainty that has peaked over the past week.

“Despite return to play protocols being released on Wednesday night that indicated the season was back on, our executives in consultation with our playing group have made the difficult decision to withdraw all teams from the AFLOE Div 2 competition for season 2020.

“Making an effort to return to football and netball has been our priority through this period and with cases dropping and restrictions easing we believed it was a realistic possibility.

“We’d also like to thank Aaron Bailey (AFLOE=) and his team at the league for the hard work they’ve put in through this period.

Allowance relief ■ The Australian Government is extending the availability of the Farm Household Allowance relief payment for three months, providing $2.1 million to eligible farmers and their families.

Agriculture Minister David Littleproud said the payments would support farmers who require some more breathing space to begin to recover or make difficult decisions about their future.

“Farmers and their partners will automatically receive $13,000 a couple or $7500 a single person, roughly equivalent to six months of the standard FHA payment, if they exhaust their FHA payments between July 1and September 30.”

■ As The Local Paper was going to press on Monday night (June 29), Yea Football Netball Club announced that it would not field senior teams in 2020.

The Club said it discovered a significant number of our competing clubs were also withdrawing from the 2020 season.

Works underway at Rebel Park

■ Development of Rebel Park has proceeded during the Coronavirus pandemic, says Alexandra Football Netball Club President Ray Steyger.

“Stage 1 and stage 2 have been completed with the construction of two new netball courts, lighting, infrastructure and building with change rooms, toilets, showers, storage and office,” Mr Steyger said.

“Stage 3 will see the construction of a new multipurpose building with stage 4 providing an upgrade of power to the reserve and new lights to the oval.

“The tender process was advertised in May with a total of six companies submitting tenders for stage 3, the Project Control Group responsible for delivering the project impressed at the number and strength of the six companies.

“At present, the tenders are being assessed by an independent panel and we anticipate completing the process and confirming the successful tender company in coming weeks.”

Other Clubs have advised the League that they have made the same decision. The League set to make an announcement next week as to the 2020 season.

■ The new 10-year National Wild Dog Action Plan takes effect from today (Wed., July 10.

The plan is endorsed by producers, peak farming bodies, the Australian Government, state governments and research and development corporations.

It ensures wild dog control measures are humane, evidence-based and best practice.

Thornton permit ■ Tanglewood Musical Entertainment is applying for a five-year permit to run an annual music festival on private land at 969 Maroondah Hwy, Thornton. The festival has taken place from 2015-19.

The festival is described as a “boutique” event, with music, arts, workshops and arts.

Firewood help

■ Those who use firewood as their only source of heating in winter, and Victorians on low incomes may be eligible for financial assistance to help with firewood costs. $97.3 mil. budget

■ Mitchell Shire Council’s 2020-21 budget is highlighted by $1.93 million for Wallan’s Greenhill Reserve and Wellington Street Precinct, a $2.48 million rejuvenation on Sydney St, Kilmore, and an allocation of $2.37 million for a permanent Seymour Resource Recovery Centre.

Mitchell Council will also increase funding to its sealed roads program, continue to improve road and footpath linkages and keep the doors open to outdoor pools for free as part of the $97.32 million 2020-21 budget.

"This is truly a milestone budget for Council. We’re proud of the financially responsible legacy we’ve built,” Mayor Cr David Lowe said.

Cyclists’ Rest Wine Shop in Yea

■ On Wednesday of last week Captain G. A. Fairbairn's homestead, Terangaville,was the scene of a brilliant function, the occasion being the birthday celebration of Mr Paul Jaques.

A pleasant evening was held in the men's hall, which was tastefully decorated with bush vegetation in the old bush style, The veteran received a gift of cardigan jacket and walking stick from the men working on the new homestead.

Captain Fairbairn made the presentation, and in a happy little speech congratulated Mr. Jaques on his having attained his 81st birthday.

Mr Jaques also received a handsome pipe with tobacco, from Mrs G. A. Fairbairn, and the toast of the guest of the evening was enthusiastically drank.

Mr Jaques suitably responded, thanking his friends and workmates for their generous tribute,.

A musical programme by the talented Terangaville orchestra (conducted by G. Dynon) then followed, The musicians were; R, Taylor (violin), T. Dawe (violin), W. Greenwood (violin), V. Dann (baritone), Dunstan (piano), D. Robertson (side drum), etc.

Songs were rendered by G. Gilmour (Mother MoCree), V. Dunn (Smiles), S. Dunstan, late.of the Tivoli theatre (Poor Old Man), J. Dynon (When You Gang 'awe, Jimmie), W. Youins (While London Sleeps), and .W. Greenwood (I Dreamed a Dream).

T. Richardson also sang the favorite camp song Mulligan's Band, accompanied by the orchestra.

The rendering of this song was greatly appreciated by the company, and a step dance was given, with lightning touch by D. Robertson, Mr Jaques also filled his niche in the programme by reciting The Country Fair, our octogenarian friend in this ong recitation showing that his memory and elocutionary powers had in no wise diminished in spite of his advanced age, his impersonations of charactors at an English fair greatly delighted the assemblage, and at the conclusion he was vigorously applauded.

An adjournment was made for supper at 9,30 p.m,, after which the floor was cleared for dancing, when numerous couples took posesseion of the floor, An outstanding feature of the dancing was a display by G. Gilmour of his famous 'kangaroo hop." While the festivities were in full swing numerous telephone messages of cogratulation were received from friends in different parts of the State. A most enjoyable even.ing terminated at 11.30 p.m.

■ A man named George Gale, a benchman employed at Edwards' sawmills (late Kidd's),- Yarck, met with a very nasty accident on Saturday morning, just prior to finishing his. week's work, He had just placed his last log on the bench when his hand slipped and came in contact with the circular saw, which inflicted a nasty cut across the fingers of his right hand. He was brought into Yea in Mr McCormack's motor car. Dr. Colin Campbell, who attended to the injured man, found it necessary to amputate the top of the first finger, but entertains hopes of saving the others

‘Love me Tender’ ■ Murrindindi Shire Council, together with Tender Right, is holding an online workshop on Monday (July 6) to assist businesses interested in tendering for Council services and projects.

Council routinely puts out tenders throughout the year, seeking supplier bids for a range of different works and services, including financial, construction and trades, planning, consulting and engineering.

Council's Mayor, Cr Leigh Dunscombe, said the Tender Right Workshop is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to learn about the local government tender process and how they can put their best foot forward when it comes to submitting a tender bid for a particular project or service.

“It's helpful to understand the tender process from endto-end because you only have one chance to submit your bid - and you need to make it count.

The workshop will help you to determine whether a particular tender is a good fit for your business, by working through

“It will also help businesses understand local government tender documents and how to use our e-tendering portal,” Cr Dunscombe said.

you'll learn how to write a tender bid that not only highlights your skills and experience, but also uses tangible examples to demonstrate your strengths and what might set your bid apart from others.

“Finally, the workshop will provide a good overview about how tenders are evaluated and what government assessors are looking for in a bid.

“We want businesses to get the most out of this workshop, so please come prepared with any questions you'd like answered.

“While the facilitator won't be able to answer any questions about specific tenders, they will assist with any general questions you may have about the tender process itself.” Cr Dunscombe said.

“The Workshop will also assist candidates with the business of getting elected to local government, including offering advice on how to connect with the community and discussing key skills and campaign techniques that will help you on your journey from community member to candidate - and possibly even to councillor.

“Ultimately, we hope that this Workshop can both encourage and attract high quality candidates who are in tune with community needs to stand for the important role of councillor.

The Program helps communities and businesses access funds to support projects and events that align with the goals we set in the 2017-2021 Council Plan.

■ As the screen industry emerges out of a COVID-19 world and is looking to find ways to reinvigorate itself, Monster Pictures and producer Chris Brown’s Pictures in Paradise have joined forces in their common commitment to become an important part of the economic recovery.

This week they announced the establishment of an international production and investment partnership with Nicolas Levene and Toby Louie of Fairvale Entertainment to launch a premier Australian horror and genre label that will focus on producing and financing elevated and shrewdly budgeted films aimed at the international market.

The team intends to launch with a slate of five films and are now looking for projects from writers, directors, producers and creative teams as they explore new ways to innovatively finance and produce feature films as Australia and New Zealand emerge as two of the most COVID-19 safe production environments in the world.

Review: Coriolanus ■ Not often performed, the plot of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus is convoluted.

The general, Caius Marcius (Tom Hiddleston) is contemptuous of the plebeians of Rome for rioting.

He finds them undeserving of the grain they want as the populace hadn’t fought to save Rome in the recent battles with the Tarquin kings.

The impending threat posed by the Volscian army then propels Marcius to glory as he defeats their leader, Aufidius (Hadley Fraser) and is greeted as Coriolanus – or conqueror.

Capitalising on his new found reputation Coriolanus enters politics only to find he cannot live up to the expectations of the people or political opponents who want to bring him down.

Sent into exile and humiliated, he defects to the Volscian army and leads them against Rome.

A change of heart occurs when his mother, Volumina (Deborah Findlay), appeals to his honour which will be forever tarnished by his betrayal. Coriolanus concedes and is slain by Aufidius.

Shakespeare’s reasons for tackling this topic may coincide with popular uprisings in England against the merging of small landholdings into larger estates by landlords consolidating their holdings.

Whilst audiences might be able to identify with the theme of disaffection, the character of Coriolanus is less sympathetic.

‘The strength of the language and the skill of the actors hold the moment’ He has no monologues that help establish his train of thought or change of heart. Coriolanus is not a conventional tragic hero nor are the vagaries of the general public easy to fathom.

For all that, this is a dynamic production. The minimalist set (Lucy Osborne) and the sparse direction (Josie Rourke) sees characters stepping into their multiple roles from seats set against a common wall.

The strength of the language and the skill of the actors hold the moment.

The back wall serves as a screen and a prop for graffiti.

A simple square painted on the floor becomes the prime focal area into which characters enter and depart the action.

At two hours and 40 minutes in length, this YouTube streaming of the National Theatre’s production first performed in 2014 is not for the faint hearted.

It is, however, more than just a record of one of Shakespeare’s lesser known plays, it is a testament to the theatrical arts and the performance skills by actors that make theatre come alive.

● Coady Green ■ The sound of live performances has been missing in Melbourne for more than three months now, but for concert pianist Coady Green, that's about to change.

Coady is performing three socially distanced classical piano concerts at Brunswick's Tempo Rubato later this week.

The concerts are on Friday (July 3_ at 8pm and Saturday (July 4) at 6 pm and 8 pm.

With only an audience of 20 people permitted, the concerts of Liszt, Kouvaras and Rubinstein are heavily booked, such is the desire for live professional classical music.

But if you miss out on scoring a ticket to the live concerts, Coady's pianist fingers are very busy at the moment, preparing to record his first set of CDs for British label Toccata Classics.

He will be recording the complete piano etudes of the Romantic Russian composers, Anthon Rubinstein.

This is a particular exciting project, as they have never been recorded in their entirety before and are notoriously difficult.

And that's not all for this busy musician he is also recording a CD of Australian music for saxophone and piano, with his classical saxophone playing partner Justin Kenealy.

Together they are Duo Eclettico, and this recording will be on the Australian Tall Poppies label.

Coady is adamant that he loves sharing his music with a live audience, because he says that while each of the audience come from different background with their own personal stories, all are united for a moment by the experience of the music.

So what has this passionate pianist missed most about not having live performances?

"The communication between performer and audience is what I have missed about live performance, and what thrills me to go back to performing live attain," he said.

Away from the concert state, Coady is a pianist and lecture in classical performance at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at the University of Melbourne.

Victorian Arts Bendigo Gallery Bessie Davidson & Sally Smart - Teo artists and the Parisian avant-garde Bessie Davisdon was one of a cohort of female Australian artists who.at the turn of the 19th century, sought to expand their lives and artistic careers by travelling to the renowned cultural centres of Europe, most notably Paris and London.

Many artists returned to Australia bringing their matured artistic style to an Australian audience.

Davidson was one of the few who choose to stay in Europe, firmly establishing herself within the vibrant artistic milieu of Paris's Montparnasse.

Over the course of her career Davidson received many accolades and awards including being made a chevalier of the Legion of Honour - the highest award conferred by the French Government.

Whilst Davidson's work has largely been overlooked in Australia, stories of Bessie Davidson's life as an artist living in Paris were a frequent part of conversation in artist Sally Smart's childhood home in rural South Australia.

Bessie was Sally's great aunt - her legacy empowered this renowned Australian artist to follow her own artistic ambitions.

This exhibition brings together more than 50 works that highlight Davidson's 'modern French impressionist' style of painting - with life filled domestic interiors, landscapes and portraits of women, in addition, the gallery has invited Sally Smart to create a new body of work responding to and developing upon the cultural legacy of Davidson as a pioneering female South Australian artist - firmly placing the work of this ground-breaking artist back into the story of Australian art history.

Sally Smart, who recently retraced Davidson's life in Paris, has worked with leading dancers, Deane Butterworth and Jo Lloyd, to create a new cross-disciplinary video installation that represents Davidson's relationship with lifelong friend and rumoured lover, Margaret Preston.

His newly commissioned work "embodies the timeless psychological tensions for these women, grappling with the avant-garde in art and life, at a traumatic period in human history with war, isolation, gender and modernity", and will be shown alongside a survey of key works from Smart's Australian and international collection.

Dear Australia ■ Arts Centre Melbourne alongside Playwriting Australia (PWA) and 25 arts organisations from across the country will broadcast Dear Australia; a collation of creative works from 50 Australian playwrights from July 2-5 on its digital hub, Together With You. Interim Executive Chair of Playwriting Australia, David Berthold, said that this was a project that “not only elevates the voice of playwrights, but also demonstrates the huge diversity of voices this nation enjoys.”

The Substation

■ The Substation presents Platform: a New-World Arts Experience.

A digitally-scaled recreation of The Substation building hosted inside a private Minecraft server, Platform is a space for artists across visual arts and electronic music to develop and present new work.

This new-world experience seeks to capture the sense of community that transpires in the physical venue, with a series of events scheduled from July 17.

■ Regional leisure travel in the US has responded quickly as the travelling public look to satisfy their pent up demands by taking road trips to coastal areas.

Route 66 has never seen so many vacationing families heading west. Route 66 runs from Chicago past Barneys Beanery and the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites on Santa Monica Boulevard right down to the Santa Monica Pier .

Nationwide it's the conversion of some 50 million international trips to domestic drive destinations such as Los Angeles and West Hollywood.

You will see a similar migration on Australia's roads when everyone becomes a grey nomad.

WeHo, LA rebuild ■ With the Coronavirus still hitting hard in a few states in America it looks and feels like California is starting to feel more confident as this epidemic flourishes.

It is going to be a hard road back but California has a positive outlook. When you do get to fly over the Pacific and some are saying it might not be till 2021. Here is what you can expect to see.

Los Angeles is a sprawling Southern California city and the centre of the nation's film and television industry. Near its iconic Hollywood sign, studios such as Paramount Pictures, Universal and Warner Brothers offer behind the scenes tours.

On Hollywood Boulevard, TCL Chinese Theatre displays celebrities' hand and footprints, the Walk of Fame honours thousands of luminaries and vendors sell maps to stars' homes.

Few cities on the planet can compare to the great city of Los Angeles. LA is literally one of the few places in the world where people from every nation come to see their dreams come true, to achieve their goals, and to reach their ultimate potential. It is a city that is about opportunity, creativity, culture, and experience.

West Hollywood is a trendy area known for its high energy nightlife. The fabled Sunset Strip features the Chateau Marmont, a swanky celebrity hideaway, plus comedy clubs and live music venues like the legendary Whiskey a Go Go. Santa Monica Boulevard, awash in rainbow flags, is home to a number of gay bars, dance clubs and shops.

WeHo also offers some of the city's most buzzworthy restaurants. The hottest celebrity restaurant is Craig's of West Hollywood. One night I saw Ellen DeGeneres, Joe Walsh from the Eagles and actor Jamie Foxx all in the one night.

Meanwhile in San Fran ■ San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco and colloquially known as SF, San Fran, Frisco, or The City, is the cultural, commercial, and financial center of Northern California. It is the city where you leave your heart. The Golden Gate Bridge is just one of the huge tourist attractions.

■ San Diego is a city on the Pacific coast of California known for its beaches, parks and warm climate. Immense Balboa Park is the site of the renowned San Diego Zoo, as well as numerous art galleries, artist studios, museums and gardens. A deep harbour is home to a large active naval fleet, with the USS Midway, an aircraft-carrier-turned-museum, open to the public.

Police consider leaving

■ Nearly three-fourths of Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said in a poll that they are considering leaving the force amid a police reform bill recently passed by the D.C. Council.

The proposal would require law enforcement body camera footage to be released to the public more quickly following a police-related shooting and would restrict when officers can use lethal force.

It also would prohibit the department from purchasing military-style equipment from the federal government.

Local lawmakers stopped an attempt by one council member at large who proposed to limit the size of the force and cap it at 3500 from its current size of 3863.

However, several hundred on the force revealed to the D.C. Police Union, which represents 3600 Washington officers, detectives, and sergeants, that they are looking to leave anyway.

According to the survey of 600 local law enforcement members, of the 71 per cent considering leaving, 25 per centmay retire earlier than planned, 35 per centare seeking jobs at other law enforcement agencies, and 39 per cent are considering leaving law enforcement altogether.

Additionally, 96 per centof those members polled said they believe crime will increase, and 88 per centsaid officer safety will plunge.

Defunding Police ■ Over half of Democrats support the movement to defund the police, according to a new poll published last week.

Just 34 per cent of Americans support defunding the police, according to a ABC News poll.

This includes 55 per cent of Democrats, but just 9 per cen t of Republicans.

Support for the movement also cuts across racial lines, with 57 per cent of African Americans supporting the movement to defund the police, compared to 42 per cent of Hispanics, and 26 per cent of Whites. The poll has a margin of error of roughly 4.2 per cent. Calls to defund the police have escalated in recent weeks after four Minnesota police officers were charged in connection with George Floyd's death. A "veto-proof" majority of the Minneapolis City Council now supports defunding the city's police department in the wake of Floyd's death.

Minneapolis City Council President Lisa Bender said during a CNN appearance last week that the desire to call the police during an emergency situation comes from a place of privilege.

Some prominent Democratic politicians, including Reps. Ilhan Omarof Minnesota, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ofNew York have signaled support for the movement to defund the police, while presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has said he does not support the idea.

A majority of Americans disagree with the call to defund the police and the proposed reallocation of funding, a national poll taken amid demonstrations for George Floyd found.

Almost two-thirds of Americans are against defunding law enforcement while 34 per centagree with the movement, according to an ABC News poll released last week. When asked about reducing the police budget to put resources toward other health and social programs, 60 per cent of Americans opposed the idea while 39 per cent supported it.

■ Remember those corny comedy films featuring Ma and Pa Kettle? Marjorie Main asMa Kettle was a fine comic actress with a gravelly voice and Percy Kilbride was just perfect as the mild mannered Pa Kettle.

The characters were simple hillbillies who lived on a run down farm with 15children. As a child I thought they were hilarious.

Mary Tomlinson was born in Indiana in 1890. When she became a vaudeville performer Mary took on the ‘stage name’ of Marjorie Main to avoid embarrassing her father who was a minister.

She debuted on Broadway in 1916. Marjorie married in 1921 but her husband passed away in 1935.

Her first film was A House Divided in 1931.

Marjorie became type-cast in high class dowager roles and made six films with Wallace Beery in the 1940s.

She became a contracted player with MGM studios. Some of her films at MGM included Meet Me In St Louis, The Harvey Girls and Summer Stock.

In 1947 she was cast opposite Percy Kilbride as Ma Kettle in the film The Egg And I. The public loved Ma and Pa Kettle and as a result in 1949 Universal Studios produced their first film titled Ma and Pa Kettle.

Marjorie asked to use her own clothes for the role of Ma and loved working with Percy.

Percy Kilbride was born in San Francisco in 1888 and had worked as a Broadway actor before making his first film in 1933.

Some of his film credits included George Washington Slept Here, The Adventures of Mark Twain and State Fair.

The first film with Marjorie and Percy was a box office smash and was quickly followed in 1950 by Ma And Pa Kettle Go to Town.

Pa's character was a bit on the lazy side and I loved it when Pa was relaxing in his rocking chair in his old bowler hat listening to the radio while Ma bustled around managing the farm, the animals and the children.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs FILM: SHAFT: Genre: Action/Crime/Comedy.

Rating: MA15+ Length: 111 Minutes.

Stars: **½ Review: John Shaft Jr, is no private detective like his family bloodline before him, but to uncover the truth behind his best friend's untimely death, he needs an education only his dad and legendary grand-dad can provide.

A direct sequel to 2000's "Shaft" starring Samuel L. Jackson, which was a follow on from the Oscar winning "Shaft" (1971), "Shaft's Big Score" (1972) and "Shaft in Africa" (1973) starring Richard Roundtree as the super cool private detective, John Shaft, this time around is a formulaic by-the-book addition to the series that has nothing new to offer, but nonetheless, it is a comforting return that radiates a fuzzy nostalgic feel for those fans of the series, and a more than passable introduction to the legendary character for those who weren't around went Shaft first hit screens back in 1971, or 2000 for that matter.

Samuel L. Jackson is right at home as the sharp, quick witted and wise-cracking nephew, John Shaft, and it's a joy to watch him spar off against the original Shaft, Richard Roundtree, returning in the iconic role, however, it is the young Jessie T. Usher as John Shaft, Jr, that remains the weakest link of the three protagonists, leaving the feeling that it could have been something far greater resonating throughout, as jokes and humour more of a misfire more often than not, ultimately making it the lamest in the series to date driven by a shallow screenplay and inept direction.

"Shaft" is far from a loss, as there are moments to enjoy, primarily Jackson and Roundtree as they navigate their way through the usual punch-ups, gun play and pyrotechnics, and even though the heavyhanded comedic route should have been pulled into line, and driven along with more depth and substance, this is journey down memory lane that strangely enough, when all was said and done, had me hoping that I would like to have another visit from them again, only better next time hopefully.

FILM: THE DEBT COLLECTOR: Genre: Crime/Drama/Thriller.

Cast: Billy Connolly, Ken Stott, Francesca Annis.

Year: 1999.

Rating: MA15+ Length: 109 Minutes.

Stars: **** Review: This is legendary comedian Billy Connolly as you've never seen him before, a gritty and hard-hitting crime drama of a notoriously brutal 'Debt Collector,' now straight and successful, and a detective obsessed on retribution for the horrendous crimes he inflicted on helpless people decades earlier in 1970's Scotland.

Billy Connolly gives a dark and gripping dramatic performance as the now successful artist with the vicious villainous past, and is aided with tremendous effect by veteran Ken Stott (Shallow Grave) as the avenging detective on a campaign to ensure that the violent crimes are not forgotten or forgiven.

Reflective of such outstanding British crime thrillers as Danny Boyle's 'Shallow Grave' (1994), Graham Greene's 'Brighton Rock' (1948), Mike Hodges 'Get Carter' (1971) with Michael Caine and John Mackenzie's 'The Long Good Friday' (1980), this is a compelling thriller that never lets go, an experience with the force of a sledgehammer that hits you right between the eyes.

Cast: Ralph Macchio, Joe Seneca, Jami Gertz.

Year: 1986.

Rating: M. Length: 99 Minutes.

Stars: **** Verdict: A young boy with an extraordinary talent with the guitar dreams of being a famous Blues guitarist, so he persuades legendary Blues musician Willie Brown to help him, but on the way deep into Mississippi, doesn't know about Willie's deal with the devil decades before at the crossroads, and that the Devil is now wants to collect.

Outstanding film from legendary director Walter Hill inspired by the legend of blues musician Robert Johnson and the classic myth that he sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads to achieve success.

Strong direction by Walter Hill from a superbly intelligent screenplay and top notch performances, most notably veteran Joe Seneca as Willie Brown, bring one of the great the legends of the blues to life with a searing edge and haunting intensity.

Wonderfully atmospheric and topped off by an electrifying soundtrack

by Ry Cooder, and an edge-of-your seat climatic guitar dual, this is a story of the deep south that brilliantly reflects why they call it the blues. Footnote: The Coen Brothers paid homage to this legendary story in "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000).

Rourke’s Reviews Birthday ■ (M). 120 minutes. Available on Blu-ray and DVD. Touching on a subject that continues to deeply affect many members of the South Korean community, especially those who directly suffered from it, this exceptionally well-acted, genuinely moving drama sees the arrival of an exciting talent, writer/director Lee Jongeon, who has actually been working behind the scenes for almost two decades.

On April 16, 2014, a seemingly routine ferry trip turned into an absolute nightmare.

The Sewol, due to piloting error, turned too sharply and began to slowly tip over, but instead of getting the passengers to make their way to the upper deck, the crew told them to remain in their cabins, reassuring them that everything was okay.

By the time that it clearly became evident everything wasn't okay, the ferry had tipped to the point where the passengers couldn't escape, with the lower levels now largely filled with water.

On top of that, the coast guard response was far too slow, and government orders to keep outside experts, helpers and reporters at bay, hindered things even more.

By the time the disaster reached its conclusion, 304 passengers had drowned, around 250 of them students from Danwon High School.

Of the 172 people who survived, most were rescued by fishing boats who turned up 40 minutes before the coast guard.

The government then concentrated their efforts on covering up the numerous, incompetent mistakes made, enraging the public even more.

This, along with other incidents, lead to the downfall of President Park Geun-hye in 2017.

Set three years after the tragedy, Birthday centres on one particular family, who lost their teenage son, Su-ho (played by Yoon Chan-young in flashbacks). Jungil (Sol Kyung-gu) is the husband and father who returns to South Korea after several years abroad, wanting to re-enter the lives of his wife Soon-nam (Jeon Do-yeon) and young daughter Ye-sol (Kim Bo-min), who was too young back then to now recognise her father.

Soon-nam is totally broken from the death of Su-ho, and has never forgiven Jung-il for not being there during her darkest hour, and immediately asks for a divorce.

Jung-il is totally unprepared for the stifling, destroyed world Soonnam lives in (she even intermittently picks on or ignores Ye-sol), and his awkward attempts to console are frequently wrongheaded, but he does manage to slowly make

a connection with his daughter.

When volunteers from a Sewol support group show up asking if the couple want to commemorate their son's upcoming birthday, as a way of saying goodbye, Jung-il agrees, but Soon-nam refuses, feeling the whole exercise undermines her significant loss. The first three-quarters of Birthday are beautifully lowkey, as we see a family dealing with the sorrowful death of a loved one, and how it affects each person differently. Lee carefully concentrates on what each character says and does (or doesn't), and how they interact with people who are either trying to help, or have suffered like them, and even quietly (but powerfully) incorporates real locations and memorials that families of the disaster visit. This makes the finale all-the-more emotionally overwhelming, as we see damaged people finally externalise their pain, openly acknowledging how much Su-ho's death has devastated them.

This heart-wrenching catharsis eloquently follows the grimly measured drama that has proceeded it.

The acting is simply brilliant. Jeon (The Harmonium In My Memory, The Shameless, Ashfall, Beasts Clawing At Straws), who won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival for her searing performance in the magnificent 2007 film Secret Sunshine, totally immerses herself in what is a very demanding role, making Soon-nam's crippling grief wholly believable, but also allows us to understand her cold, at-times anti-social behaviour (a scene where Soon-nam breaks down is truly uncomfortable to watch). Sol (Peppermint Candy, Oasis, Idol) also impresses as Jung-il, while young Kim is perfect as Ye-sol. Lee Jong-eon has worked for a number of years for renowned filmmaker Lee Chang-dong (whose most recent film was the critically acclaimed Burning), as a script supervisor on Secret Sunshine, and as an assistant director on Poetry (2010); she also worked as an assistant director on Ounie Lecomte's outstanding autobiographical feature, A Brand New Life (2009), which was produced by her mentor. Lee, who actually volunteered for an association who provided a place where bereaved families could gather, treats the material with intelligence and respect, and never allows the film to fall into melodrama or cheap manipulation.

Birthday is certainly emotionally draining and demanding, but is an authentically human experience that deserves to be seen. There have been a number of documentaries made on the Sewol disaster, including The Truth Shall Not Sink With Sewol (2014), After The Sewol (2017), Intention (2018), and In The Absence (2018), which was nominated at this year's Oscars.

Rescue package ■ The live music sector is one of the winners in the Federal Government's new $250 million Arts and Entertainment Package announced last Thursday.

Live music gets $75 million of capital funding to help production and event businesses put on new festivals, concerts, tours and events as social distancing restrictions ease as reported by The Music Network.

Memo streaming ■ Keep The Circle Unbroken concert is presented by the partnership between Memo Music Hall, St Kilda, and Renegade Films (RocKwiz), as well as Row Jerry Row. It features Tim Rogers, Abby Dobson, Mark Atkins, KylieAuldist, Dave Gleeson, backed

What exactly is a GSM blend?

■ John Rozentals tells his readers about GSM blends.

So what exactly is a GSM blend?

Well, it's a dry red blended from three varieties - grenache, shiraz and mourvedre (aka mataro).

Though not always, apparently, do the varieties appear in that order of magnitude. Labelling a wine as MSG just doesn't have the same appeal, if you get my drift.

Each of the component varieties has a clear function.

Grenache adds its perfumed juiciness, and shiraz its trademark mid-palate richness and dark-berry flavours.

Mourvedre normally does come last in the varietal mix and has the stiffness to make sure it's a red we're drinking.

The blend originated, I believe, in France's Rhone Valley, and remains popular there.

It is catching on in Australia, too, especially where there are old plantings of grenache and mourvedre. That is, mainly in the Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale.
