Trouble in Liberal leader’s own office

● Matthew Guy’s office problems revealed in The Local Paper Manningham Edition which covers his local electorate of Bulleen.

■ Liberal leader Matthew Guy wants to be the Premier of the State of Victoria. Before he wins that macro job, he might need to demonstrate he can manage the micro - that he can adequately supervise his own office.

Last week started with a snippet in the ‘Baz’ column of the Sunday Herald Sun that Matthew Guy’s office had recruited former Age gossip columnist Suzanne Carbone as a senior political adviser to work alongside his Chief-of-Staff Mitch Catlin.

That raised a few eyebrows from seasoned political observers who had followed Ms Carbone’s writings at the left-leaning Age. Her past Tweets had praised Premier Daniel Andrews, and had a dig at Matthew Guy. In another social media post, Ms Carbone criticised a Liberal Party identity who thought “Facebook is a sewer to spew homophobic and sexist tirades”.

A Google search would have revealed a Melbourne Observer clipping with Ms Carbone pictured beaming alongside Labor Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

“You have to wonder if Matthew’s office did any background checking at all,” said a senior Liberal Party source, on condition of anonymity. “There are photos. Does Matthew need someone to draw him a picture?”

Within the week, Ms Carbone had left the Liberal Party leader’s employ, reportedly “resigning”. Her personal Twitter and Facebook pages have since been restricted.

Earlier, The Local Paper had tried to contact another of Matthew Guy’s senior staffers ‘Trish’ at his Bulleen electorate office at Doncaster. ‘Trish’ had called earlier to place some advertising in The Local Paper’s Manningham Edition.

Mr Guy’s office phone was diverted to Trish’s mobile number. She said Mr Guy’s office would no longer proceed with any advertising with The Local Paper.

Police pursuit at Preston ■ Police have arrested two men after a pursuit involving an alleged stolen vehicle in Melbourne’s north on Thursday last week (Feb. 24).

Officers on patrol in Preston observed a stolen 2016 white Volkswagen Golf on Bell St around 5.15am.

The Police Air Wing assisted members on the ground in following the vehicle across a number of suburbs, including Altona North, Deer Park and Kings Park.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly rammed and collided with vehicles as it was being followed before stop sticks were successfully deployed on Kings Rd around 6.20am.

The vehicle came to a halt and the driver allegedly attempted to flee on foot, however OC spray was deployed, with the driver and a passenger arrested at the scene.

The Volkswagen Golf was wanted as part of an ongoing investigation into a series of burglaries and vehicle thefts in the northern suburbs since February 20.

Nobody was injured and the investigation is ongoing.

The driver, an 18-year-old North Melbourne man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle and serious driving offences.

He has been remanded to appear before Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

The passenger, a 31-year-old Parkville man has been charged with theft of motor vehicle.

He has been remanded to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’Court today (Wed., Mar, 2).

Rezza’s Jennifer is missing ‘Out of character’ say Police ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing woman Jennifer.

The 48-year-old old was last seen leaving her home on Willoughby St in Reservoir about 8pm on Tuesday evening last week (Feb. 22).

Police have concerns for Jennifer as she requires medication and the disappearance is out of character.

Jennifer was last seen wearing a red jacket and black pants.

Police have released an image of Jennifer and urge anyone with information on her whereabouts to contact Reservoir Police Station on 9460 6744.

■ A woman has died in hospital following a collision in Abbotsford last week.

The pedestrian is believed to have been crossing Hoddle St when she was hit by a car near the intersection of Johnston St on Friday (Feb. 25) about 6.40am.

The driver of the car stopped at the scene to assist and emergency services were called.

The 90-year-old woman was taken to hospital for treatment where she later died.

■ Mernda Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have charged a 43-year-old man following a sexual assault in Northcote.

It is alleged a woman was picked up by an unknown man on Smith St in Collingwood about 1.35am on Friday, February 18.

The victim got out of the vehicle in Northcote and the male driver sexually assaulted her.

He then drove away, and the victim reported the matter to Police.

A Roxburgh Park man has been charged with rape and abduction. He was to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Richmond assault

■ Yarra Crime Investigation Unit detectives are appealing for witnesses following an assault in Richmond that left a man unconscious.

It isbelieved a 28-year-old Port Melbourne man was approached from behind by two unknown males about 9.20pm at the corner of Church and Lesney Sts on Saturday, February 19.

The victim was struck to the head, rendering him unconscious, before the offenders left the scene on foot.

He was taken to hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries.

A 22-year-old St Kilda man has been interviewed and released pending further enquiries.

Investigators are keen to speak to the occupants of a 2015 white Toyota Camry that had stopped on Lesney St and may have witnessed the incident.

Fitzroy burglary charge ■ Melbourne Crime Investigation Unit have charged a man after an alleged aggravated burglary in Fitzroy on Thursday night (Feb. 24).

The 21-year-old was charged with: ■ two counts of aggravated burglary ■ attempted armed robbery ■ theft ■ attempted theft of motor vehicle ■ possess drug of dependence (methylamphetamine) ■ possess prohibited weapon (knuckledusters) ■ state false name to police ■ breach conduct condition of bail (curfew) ■ six counts of commit indictable offence whilst on bail.

The Windsor man was due to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a filing hearing.

The charges follow an incident at a Brunswick St address about 11.10pm on Thursday.

Police will allege a male occupant was woken by a man, armed with knuckle dusters, who demanded cash and valuables.

The occupants fled the home and notified police who arrested the man at the scene.

Indigenous orchids

■ Banyule is home to a variety of indigenous orchids. They are predominantly found in bushland refuges across the municipality.

One of the tallest indigenous orchids is commonly called the rosy hyacinth-orchid, or internationally Dipodium roseum.

It can grow up to one metre tall and flowers from November to May. Although unrelated, its showy pink flower spikes resemble the horticulturally grown hyacinth.

These predominantly summer flowering orchids will soon be reaching their cyclic dormancy, many other summer deciduous orchid species will be emerging and flowering throughout the year.

■ Two teenagers have been arrested after stolen vehicle attempted to evade police in the northern subrubs.

Officers patrolling the Western Ring Road sighted Kia Cerato about 12.35am on Wednesday (Feb. 23).

Police attempted to intercept the vehicle which sped away.

The Air Wing followed the vehicle as it travelled through residential streets in Fawkner and Coburg before stop sticks were successfully deployed in Queens Pde. The Kia continued to be driven on its rims along Sydney Rd and Mahoney’s Rd before the driver lost control and crashed into a tree near the intersection with Edgars Rd in Thomastown.

A 16-year-old Thomastown boy and 16year-old Coburg boy were arrested and taken to hospital for observation.

Police are still searching for a third individual who fled the scene on foot.

Diamo courts re-open

■ Netball has made a big return following the completion of the $2.52 million upgrade of the Diamond Creek Netball Courts.

Nillumbik Shire Council completed the project in time for this month’s 2022 season launch.

Works included replacing the eight asphalt-based courts with an acrylic plexi-pave finish, and installing new lighting, seating and shelters, ensuring the courts are compliant to Netball Victoria standards.

Mayor Cr Frances Eyre said the courts were an important regional sporting hub.

$540 million shortfall

■ The Northern Councils Alliance is calling on the Victorian Government to formally defer its plans to stop paying rates on social housing, as announced by Premier DanielAndrews.

The Alliance says the outcome would create a $540 million shortfall in muchneeded funding for councils over 10 years.

The Alliance includes the Mayors and Chief Executive Officers of Banyule, Darebin, Hume, Mitchell, Moreland, Nillumbik and Whittlesea Councils and represents over one million people.

A decision to stop paying rates on 70,000 social housing dwellings in metro Melbourne and regional cities would come as a hit to our communities, and divert funds from everyday services like waste management, maternal and child health and parks, said an Alliance statement.

It would also profoundly impact Melbourne’s north, which is home to some of the highest proportions of social housing and most socio-economically disadvantaged communities in Victoria.

“The NCA is extremely concerned the government’s current proposal will lead to northern Melbourne communities being unfairly burdened with increased rates bills and less services – all to subsidise new social housing developments in other parts of Victoria with lower social housing stock.

“With Melbourne’s north fore-

casted to remain one of Australia’s fastest growing regions, it is likely that new developments in the region will be required to contribute a significant portion to the Social andAffordable Housing Contribution if it is introduced.

“The NCA would welcome assurances that any new revenue generated through the proposed levy will be directly invested into the communities from which it came,” the statement said.

The 34-year-old is wanted on warrant for several offences, including attempt to commit indictable offence while on bail, namely traffick drugs and use false documents.

Events Commonwealth Games in 2026?

■ Commonwealth Games Australia has signed a Heads of Agreement with the Victorian Government and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to enter exclusive negotiations to bring the 2026 Commonwealth Games to Victoria with a vision to deliver a model for the Games unprecedented in the event’s history.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews and the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events Martin Pakula, confirmed that, if awarded, the 2026 Commonwealth Games would return to Victoria.

Victoria will work to deliver a world-class Commonwealth Games across Victoria that leaves a legacy for the State and it is proposed that the 2026 Games would be hosted across the State, unlike the event in Melbourne in 2006.

The Government will now work with both the CGF and CGA to develop Victoria’s 2026 Commonwealth Games Submission – which will assess the viability of hosting the event.

The submission will focus on a new way to host the Games, showing how events could be held in multiple locations across regional Victoria to showcase the best of what the State has to offer and ensure a uniquely Victorian experience for the athletes and spectators.

A regionally focused Commonwealth Games would expand the capacity of Victorian regional cities for major events, tourism, arts, culture and sport. Not only would the events mean new economic opportunities through event infrastructure – it would deliver the double benefit of creating local jobs and housing. The Games would also drive participation in sports at both a community and professional level, throughout the State.

A major cultural festival would accompany the 2026 Commonwealth Games that celebrates the diversity of competing nations.

The CGF will assess this submission prior to any decision being made to award the Games to Victoria.

The 2026 Games will be the 23rd edition of the major multi-sport competition, which first began in Hamilton, Canada in 1930.

The CGF have been in discussions with multiple countries across the Commonwealth regarding hosting the 2026 Games, with negotiations accelerating following the launch of the 2026/30 Strategic Roadmap in October 2021. The Roadmap provides future hosts and sports with the renewed flexibility to be innovative and creative in delivering the Games.

Commonwealth Games Australia have been seeking a host for 2026 and have been working with the CGF to bring the Commonwealth Games back to Australia.

Australia has staged the Commonwealth Games on five occasions, with Victoria playing host to the Melbourne 2006 Games; widely considered one of the most successful editions of the event in history.

Australia has also staged the Games in Sydney in 1938, Perth in 1962, Brisbane in 1982 and most recently Gold Coast in 2018.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games will be staged in Birmingham, England from July 28– August 8.

Commonwealth Games Australia President Ben Houston said: “Hosting Great Games is a key pillar in the Commonwealth Games Australia strategic plan and given our window for hosting the Games is 2026 we are thrilled to join the CGF in exclusive dialogue with Victoria to host the Commonwealth Games once again.

A home Games provides immeasurable benefits for our Member sports and athletes and we look forward to working with both the CGF and the Victorian Government to bring a final Games plan to life.”

Commonwealth Games Federation President Dame Louise Martin said: “We are pleased to have entered into an exclusive dialogue with Victoria and Commonwealth Games Australia to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

What’s On Chancers

■ Given the effort and detail that has gone into this production of Robert Massey’s, Chancers, and given the reputation of the Brighton Theatre Company, one would have expected a larger audience.

Indeed, the small auditorium is usually abuzz creating an energy and excitement one would normally associate with live theatre – but in these Covid times, there has been audience hesitation which has played out in amateur forums.

Set in a failing corner store after Ireland’s financial collapse, Aiden Farrell (Mark Briggs) and his wife, Dee (Sass Pinci), struggle to make ends meet.

The potential to fleece pensioner, Gertie Graham (Carol Shelbourn), of her lottery prize with the help of an inept friend, J P Kennedy (Jordan Iverach), culminates in an absurd comic reflection of the plight of countless ordinary people battling impersonal global markets beyond their control and understanding.

Massey’s skill is in balancing the comic and pathetic while discussing the ethical and moral conundrum of actual physical violence and theft for the sake of one’s legitimate survival.

Briggs, Pinci and Iverach revel in the discourse being the mainstays of the discussion with Shelbourn’s crotchety dowager making an intriguing target.

Whilst the interactions are tight, the final lyric element of each one’s Irish accent is not quite consistent.

Voice and dialect coach Maria Haughey would have had her work cut out for her here.

There is something about the timing of an accent that a native like Massey has layered in for comic effect that is problematic for alien tongues.

That comic acknowledgement is also in Peter Newling’s direction which recognizes the interplay of the ‘traditional Irish warmth, humour and self deprecation’.

The furnishings of a corner store (John Shelbourne) are given added and authentic detail by the props (Deborah Fabbro) – the crisps and breakfast cereals are genuine.

This play deserves the full houses one normally associates with Brighton Theatre Company.

The added nuances of dialect will consolidate over the run of the season and would even be assisted by the energetic engagement of a full house. And the absurdity behind Massey’s message is still as relevant today as when this play was written in 2013.

■ Celebrating its 70th anniversary this August, the Melbourne International Film Festival is releasing Melbourne on Film – a collection of bold new writing capturing the city’s on-screen identity – which will be published August 2.

Drawing on some of Melbourne’s most piquant cultural pundits, the book engages intimately with a selection of films from a specially-curated strand within the MIFF 2022 program, with each writer depicting the iconic and little-seen moments where our city and our cinema meet.

Local News

Cracked Actors

■ The synopsis provided in the programme perhaps alerts us to the underlying problems in this production of Lenore – a tale of mournful and never-ending remembrance.

It is ‘inspired by ... Poe’..tracing a man’s madness...’ even though it is about a ‘strong-willed woman’.

In other words, it tries to do too much and we are never sure of the actual focus.

The gothic horror of Poe does emerge towards the latter end of the first act though Poe (Aiden McHarg) doesn’t play a significant part in the actual plot.

Beaumont (Sebastiano Pitruzzello) is the painter that goes mad emulating the narrator from The Raven thus, is not the inspiration for the poem.

Lenore (Bridget Morrison), having married Beaumont, looks for an escape in a Juliet-like ruse having been given a potion by Sidney (Vincent Pidal), a doctor who has already proposed to her.

This would have been an adequate end point but the writers (Steven Boltz and Amy Hollow) have Lenore returning to Beaumont and being murdered only to revive once more in a final scene where we learn it is all only a tale. By this stage, things have become just a little too melodramatic.

There are also production difficulties.

Live theatre requires actors to project their voices even when playing mournful and subdued scenes. More than once I felt like calling out ‘speak up’.

Boltz’s direction didn’t aid the situation as there were occasions when actors performed with their backs to the audience and masked other performers. These are rudimentary concerns that should have been addressed.

The plain white set (Neil McLellan) had potential with a few angular apertures, but judicious lighting (Jason Junjie) could have enhanced this even further and there was an opportunity for more shadow to heighten the gothic.

All in all, the play would benefit from some serious editing and the actors needed to work on their stage craft and voice projection a little more.

Even the audience in the back row deserve to hear the dialogue.

Briony is just your regular girl from the outer suburbs, finding love, trying to make a new life and hopefully a home. But to lay foundations for a new home you have to dig into the ground. You might disturb what had been laid to rest.

Briony is in the process of unearthing her father’s childhood in Sri Lanka, his brutal World War II history in Burma, migration journey, alcoholism, and his family's eventual escape from him.

Using magic realism, incorporating puppetry and animation, this new work plunges beneath an everyday domestic space to reveal family secrets, visits from departed spirits and complex emotional worlds.

The cast includes Meg Dunn (Grace Under Pressure), puppeteer Elnaz Sheshgelani (Iranian Bauhaus), Bernadette Trench Thiedeman (Big Country Puppets, The Divination Agency) and Yuchen Wang (Golden Shield, Nightingale and the Rose) and has been developed with dramaturg Emilie Collyer.

Travelling back and forth through time and space, Phantasmagoria is full of grief, love, loss, absurdity and a generous serving of stage magic.

Performance, comedy, puppetry and animated imagery give physical life to the realm of ghosts, letting audiences glimpse unseen worlds and uneasy memories which persist - can we ever truly shake them?

■ Cassidy La Crème returns to Melbourne to present her cabaret You Could've Had It All: The Adele Group Therapy Sing-A-Long from March 7 - 12 at The Butterfly Club.

Pre-pandemic, Cassidy was at the peak of her career abroad in Malaysia, working as a recording artist, actress and TV personality in the Malay-speaking community across the globe.

Love scammers

■ In the first three quarters of 2021, Americans lost $343M+ to romance scams, per an analysis by Atlas. That’s more than all of 2020, in which Americans reported $304M in romance scams to the FTC, up 50 per cent from 2019.

What’s a romance scam? According to the FBI, it’s when a scammer uses a bogus online persona to build a relationship with someone they later con out of money.

Romance scammers typically lurk on dating sites or social media to find victims, and may be part of a criminal organization. Common targets are lonely or vulnerable people over 50, often women.

Scammers establish trust and affection, then ask for money perhaps for medical or legal fees, debt, or travel expenses. And they usually want it via some less traceable means, like gift or reload cards, transfers, or crypto.

Why the boom in romance scams? One theory: the pandemic. People have a good excuse for not wanting to meet in person and have been more isolated than ever. A recent study found 36 per cent of Americans are feeling “serious loneliness.”

■ The FBI has arrested a young man who sprayed cops with pepper spray, smashed out a window and broke into the US Capitol before he went to basic training for the U.S. Air Force.

Aiden Bilyard was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, according to court records.

He faces a host of charges, including felony civil disorder, assaulting officers with a dangerous weapon, destruction of government property, entering and remaining in a restricted building with a deadly or dangerous weapon, disorderly conduct with a deadly or dangerous weapon, and several other misdemeanours.

US Federal Debt facts

■ As Congress worked in recent days to increase the legal limit on the federal debt, the Treasury kept that debt artificially frozen at approximately $28.9 trillion.

With that limit lifted, the federal debt will take a jump upward, then keep steadily climbing, constantly increasing the burden on future taxpayers.

In 2018, according to the last complete annual report on individual income tax returns published by the Internal Revenue Service, there were 100,424,240 households in the United States that filed what the IRS calls a "taxable return."

"The taxable and non-taxable classification of a return for this report is determined by the presence of 'total income tax,'" explained the IRS. "'Total income tax,'" it said, "was the sum of income tax after credits."

In other words, the 100,424,240 households that filed a "taxable return" in 2018 actually paid income taxes to the federal government.

If you divide the $28,908,004,857,445 in debt that the federal government owed before the debt limit was lifted by the 100,424,240 American households that paid net income taxes in 2018, it works out to approximately $287,859 per incometax-paying household.

Back in 1989, the year that President Ronald Reagan left office, there were 89,178,355 income-tax-paying households in the United States, according to the IRS. At the end of January that year, the federal debt was $2,697,957,000,000.

Cannabis taxes

■ In 2020, US cannabis sales hit a record $17.5B, per Forbes.

But a new report from the Marijuana Policy Project found that states are also profiting.

The 18 states that have legalised recreational cannabis have raked in $10.4B in tax revenue since 2014.

The report does not include local tax revenues…but cities pull in money, too. Denver has generated $237.5M. California’s West Hollywood sees itself as a future Amsterdam.

It currently has six dispensaries in 1.8 square miles, generating $2.2M a year.

Where does the money go? Every state is different, but many support schools, infrastructure, or non-profits.

For example, Colorado splits its money among funds including the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Fund.

Since 2014, it has received $325M+ in excise taxes. California has given ~$100M to organisations that work with communities harmed by the war on drugs, per AP News.

Michigan generated $45.7M in 2020 from excise taxes and fees, which it splits between its School Aid Fund, the Michigan Transportation Fund, municipalities and counties, and admin costs.

A 2021 study from the Pew Research Centre found that only 8 per cent of US adults think cannabis should be illegal, while 31 per cent are cool with medical use and 60% are fine with recreational use, too.

Stars: *** Review: On the run from a lethal assassin, a wily con artist devises a scheme to hide out inside a small-town police station-but when the hit-man turns up at the precinct, an unsuspecting rookie cop finds herself caught in the crosshairs.

Uncomplicated, well staged '70s inspired action thriller is as unoriginal as it gets, but it's plainly obvious that co-writer and director Joe Carnahan and coproducer and star Gerard Butler knew that from the outset, and as a result have delivered a pulpy thrill-ride that owes much to, or draws upon, the western genre, with such classics as Howard Hawks' 1959 classic "Rio Bravo" and most notably its subsequent 1976 reimagining "Assault on Precinct 13" by John Carpenter, along with a touch of Quentin Tarantino to spice up the mix.

There's nothing new here, but it's nonetheless, a big, dumb, fun, loud, lean, mean, old fashioned 'take no prisoners' shoot 'em up with Gerard Butler doing what he does best as the hit-man, along with a stand-out supporting cast, most notably Frank Grillo as the con-artist and Alexis Louder as the heroine rookie cop who gets caught up in the mayhem, and even though it won't garner any Oscar nominations, it knows exactly what it is and exactly where it is going, an effectively entertaining pot-boiler with its tongue firmly in its check and a thrill-ride filled with baddies, gunplay and pyrotechnics that many will be glad they went along for the ride!

Stars: **½ Review: When the aging crime boss Meyer Lansky is investigated one last time by the FBI, who suspect he has stashed away millions of dollars over half a century, the retired gangster reveals to a writer the untold story about his life as the notorious boss of the National Crime Syndicate and his associations with such gangland figures as Charles "Lucky" Luciano, Al Capone, Albert Anastasia and childhood friend Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel, to name a few.

Pedestrian but nonetheless a good, solid and compelling enough biopic on the legendary crime boss is brought all the more vividly to life thanks to the presence and performance of veteran actor Harvey Keitel, and even thoughcliché dominates, budget restraints are obvious and length over running the mark.

This is a monumental step up and far cry from numerous other recent gangster biopics, most notably the 2018s diabolically cringe inducing mess "Gotti" with John Travolta and 2020s grotesquely demented and heavyhanded "Capone" with Tom Hardy, this remains a fascinating and engaging watch despite the flaws and no matter what expectations you may have in place beforehand.

Rourke’s Reviews The Batman

■ (M). 175 minutes. Opens in cinemas, including IMAX, March 3.

Wanting to dig deeper and darker than other adaptations of the DC comic creation, this admittedly intriguing production is hamstrung by a shallow script, ridiculous overlength, and a deliberate restraint so that as many young teens can buy tickets for it as possible.

Robert Pattinson plays Batman/ Bruce Wayne, and the night time crime fighting is having a serious effect on both his mental health and views on human nature, a situation that is worrying his butler, Alfred (Andy Serkis).

Gotham City is thrown into chaos when a mysterious psycho called The Riddler (Paul Dano) starts murdering notable politicians and law enforcers, who seem connected to a dark secret, a secret that may involve Wayne’s long dead parents.

Also complicating matters are Selina Kyle (Zoe Kravitz), The Penguin (an unrecognisable Colin Farrell), and his mobster boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro).

Co-writer/director Matt Reeves, who scored strongly the recent Planet Of The Apes sequels, wants to take Batman in a decidedly more adult direction, with a psychological dissection of Wayne and his nemesis, exploring how similar they are in many ways; damaged people who no longer trust the system and the people who run it, leading to a distortion of justice, causing violence that will eventually hurt the innocent.

But Reeves and his producers make the huge mistake of wanting to do it within an audience friendly, PG-13 (the movie is rated M here) framework, robbing the material’s potential of truly walking down and confronting the most harrowing, disturbing aspects of modern society.

This film really needed to be rated either MA or R. As such, the script never digs very deep, and for a movie that runs almost three hours, that leaves quite a huge hole, one that is never satisfyingly filled.

Pattinson is okay, but all he really has to do is look glum, while Kravitz cannot rise above a badly written role, complete with risible dialogue, and the moments of sexual tension between her and Pattinson is extremely clumsy.

Everyone else does what’s asked of them, but their characters are sketchy at best. There is unnecessary narration, and dialogue too often solely exists to spoon feed the audience.

Though slick, The Batman is so obsessed with surface level grimness, that it forgets to examine the gritty, unsettling details underneath, resulting in an incredibly frustrat-

ing viewing experience. Imagine if David Fincher made Seven, and Sidney Lumet made Prince Of The City, as PG-13 movies, and you’ll have a fair idea of what to expect here.

Cyrano

■ (PG). 124 minutes. Now showing in cinemas.

A heavy-handed adaptation of the oft-filmed Edmond Rostand play, this latest iteration might end up feeling redundant, but what does make it worth watching are two terrific central performances.

The plot basically remains the same; Cyrano (Peter Dinklage), a passionately proud poet and swordsman, secretly yearns for the fiery Roxane (Haley Bennett), whom he has known for years.

Unaware of Cyrano’s feelings, Roxane falls for the young, handsome Christian (Kelvin Harrison Jr), and discovering he is to be a new recruit at the garrison Cyrano is part of, persuades her longtime friend to ask Christian to woo her via letter.

Reluctantly agreeing to help, Cyrano finds out that Christian is hopeless with the written and spoken word, so decides to write for him, causing many complications between everyone involved.

Erica Schmidt’s screenplay (adapted from her own musical play, which also starred husband Dinklage) comes across like that of a Disney animated film, where messages are laid on thick, and lessons must be learned, and director Joe Wright (Atonement, Pan, Darkest Hour) makes sure every point is hammered home ad nauseam.

This, added with a series of forgettable, jarringly inserted songs (one number practically turns into a Bonnie Tyler music video), makes the two hour running time seem longer.

Harrison Jr. is under-utilised (compared to his outstanding turns in Waves and Luce), while the supporting cast aren’t given much of a chance to register (Ben Mendelsohn is particularly wasted).

Despite these flaws, both Dinklage (The Station Agent) and Bennett (The Devil All The Time, Swallow) are excellent, bringing life to their respective characters, and their work is worth the price of admission.

Pales in comparison to the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu, and as a different presentation of the story, it doesn’t come together as well as Steve Martin’s underrated 1987 variation, Roxanne.

■ Myke Dyer was a radio announcer and television producer who worked in Melbourne and is probably well remembered by our readers.

Michael David Dyer was born on October 2, 1932 in London. He was the son of Carleton Leroy Dyer and his wife Dorothy who were both from Canada.

In 1940 Michael accompanied his mother, sister and brother to Ontario where he attended Lakefield Naval Boarding College and Oakville High School. During that time he developed a strong Canadian accent.

Myke studied radio and television in Toronto during the early 1950s. He worked in various jobs before coming to Australia in 1954 on his father's advice.

Myke came to Melbourne and was employed by radio station 3DB. He produced the variety show The Happy Gang and worked with people such as Bill Collins, Dick Cranbourne and Shirlene Clancy.

On January 7, 1956, at the Memorial Church in East Malvern, Myke married Judith Tilton.

They had two children during their marriage, Jo Anne and Peter.

Myke had a keen interest in jazz music and began broadcasting a popular late night radio show on 3DB which was titled Sound Study.

In later years he also did the show on 3XY and 3AK. Thanks to Mike McColl Jones I was given reel to reel tapes of many of these shows.

is amazing how many famous jazz stars were interviewed by Myke for his program. He managed to interview Bob Crosby, Mel Torme, Dave Brubeck, Jerri Adams, George Shearing and Earl Grant.

Myke joined GTV Channel 9 and worked in television. He produced the Logie award-winning show, It Could Be You, hosted by Tommy Hanlon Jnr. Myke also did a radio show with Tommy Hanlon Jnr on 3AK titled The Tom and Myke Show.

He compered jazz concerts and lectured on the history of jazz at such diverse establishments as the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and Pentridge Prison.

● Myke Dyer Myke was also a panelist on Bert Newton's New Faces television talent quest show on GTV9.

He became publicity manager for Channel Nine and served in that capacity for two years prior to leaving and forming his own television production house.

On January 7, 1978, just two days before he was due to take up a new appointment with Armstrong Audio Video Pty Ltd, Myke went swimming in the surf at Mullaway Beach, New South Wales.

He was tragically swept out to sea by a strong rip and drowned at the age of 46. It was a huge shock to his family, friends and fans.

In later years his son Peter continued in his father's footsteps and was a presenter on the ABC radio program, .

Judy Dyer attended the radio Survivors luncheon in 2016 but sadly passed away earlier the following year She was Graham Kennedy's first private secretary and was also a talented ceramic jewellery designer.

She designed cuff-links for all members of the ‘Merkin Club’ which was a regular luncheon club each Friday at James Smythe's Toorak Hotel.

Mike Walsh was President, Mike McColl Jones was the secretary and members included Jim Murphy, Gordon French, James Smythe, Bill Beams, Bob Cribb, John Mc Lachlan and many other television people.

Gondoliers

■ On Thursday February 10 I saw the Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria back in the now refubished Alexandra Theatre at Monash University.

The opening is set in Venice .

GSOV had a backdrop of Venice with a wharf for the gondolas The opening number Chorus of Contadine was performed by the chorus and solos.

One outstanding performer in the chorus was Marisa Panzarin as Flametta.

Enter from Spain the ducal party, the Duke and Duchess of Plaza toro, their daughter Casilda and Luiz, the Duke’s personal drummer.

Ron Pidcock gave an excellent performance as the Duke of Plaza Toro.

A fine voice and a good interpretation of such a role. Pidcock was entertaining as the character.

His wife, the Duchess, was played

by Lynlee Williams. Williams played ie role formidably as called for adding to her good interpretation of the role she balanced her performance with her great voice.

Another terrific performance was given by Ian Lowe as Don Alhambra del Bolero, The Grand Inquisitor.

Lowe captured the characteristics of the role giving a masterful performance, a penetrating voice and acting range from a pleasant man to a touch of lechery when acquainted with a young lady.

The two heroes of the story were the gondoliers, Marco Palmieri performed by Stephen Carolane and Giuseppe Palmieri, played by Daniel Felton.

Both carried themselves well, giving great interpretations of their roles and were good balances to their respective wives.

The Ring Cycle includes four epic operas totalling 17 hours of performance time and is known to be the greatest challenge for any opera company as the most impressive and opulent event in the history of the artform.

by Laura Slavin and Tessa played by Emilie Washington.

Both ladies gave terrific performances, showing their love for their husbands and the expressions when they heard the news from The Grand Inquisitor was a picture. Good performances by both young ladies enhanced by their singing.

The daughter of the Duke of Plaza toro, Casilda, was performed by Isabelle Mazzarella.

Another good performance both as a singer and actor. Her scenes with the Duke’s drummer Luiz were delightful and enhanced by a wonderful voice.

Luiz was played by Andrew Alesi another good performance but in a love song he rather neglected t look at his beloved which did not suit the occasion.

The setting of Venice and Barataria was well cone and the director/choreographer Robert Ray is to be congratulated on the movement on stage and the overall production. It is nice to see GSOV back on stage.

Ring Cycle

■ Melbourne Opera took Wagner’s Ring Cycle to Bendigo’s Ulumbarra Theatre with Die Walküre on February 27, when the full staging of the historic Ring Cycle wasofficially launched to the Bendigo region.

■ AffordableArt FairMelbourne organisers have announced the decision to postpone the event until spring to ensure all galleries, staff, and art lovers can safely attend.

The new dates are September 1-4 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Organisers xtend their apologies for any inconvenience this may cause upcoming content schedules.

All ticket holders have been contacted with the option to roll over their tickets to the spring event or request a refund.

■ The iconic AFL footy comics, The Coodabeens, have quit their gig on ABC radio and relocated, as of Friday March 11 to 1377AM and Ace Radio country network. Great way to start the weekend with all the fun and originality of the gang. The show starts 4pm-6pm.

Seven loses defamation case

■ We all know how the kidnapping of little Cleo Smith played out and ended happily thereafter. Not so happy for Channel 7 who in their rush to get the news to air called the accused kidnapper by the wrong name and he, took Seven to court and won. The amount of settlement is to be kept confidential.

Big brass for Bucks

■ A rumour doing the rounds is Nathan Buckley trousered a reported $300,000 for his time in the jungle as a contestant on Ten's I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. Other contestants got nowhere near this figure, we'll never know why Bucks got so much brass.

New Chief Conductor

12-race program at Mildura

■ Mildura which in recent times has been so popular with trainers from all over the state and South Australia raced on Tuesday with another mammoth 12 race program.

■ Charlton duo Mark Boyle (part-owner/ trainer) and Ryan Sanderson (driver) landed The Gateway Pace over 2190 metres with 4Y0 Tell All-Slap On A Hat entire Yapper which is also part-owned by Mark’s wife Janice.

Not pushed out from gate four Yapper lobbed one/one as Ferocious Son (gate two) led. When the speed slackened, Yapper was off and running prior to the bell to assume control and after kicking away in the last lap with a handy margin, scored by 1.9 metres from local hope Magic In Her Moves (one/four) – four wide last lap and Be A Good Scout which followed the runner up home finishing 5.1 metres away third. Thomas Heights flew away from outside the front line to lead easily and was never headed, reaching the wire by 11 metres from Fiftyshades Cresco (gate two) which trailed, with Have A Crack 3.5 metres away third after following the pair.

James Charles trained locally by Scott Garroway after trailing the poleline leader Elizabeth Era from gate three registered a neck margin over the pacemaker, with Crackerjacks Judge third 3.4 metres back after trailing the pair. Shifting away from the inside in the last lap to make the final bend three wide, Jawsoflincoln gained a last stride head decision over the pacemaker, with Yoursnmine third 4.3 metres away after trailing the leader. Lovely trip

■ At Melton, it was great to see Oakleigh South based owner/trainer William Kucks in the winners stall when 5Y0 Angus Hall-Susuwe mare Whos Me Mum scored in the TAB Long May We Play Trotters Mobile over 1720 metres.

Given a lovely trip from the pole by Herbie H three back the markers after favourite Dellsun (gate five) took the lead away from Well Deserved, Whos Me Mum angled away from the inside approaching the final bend to lead on turning and held a margin of 1.5 metres to account for Uncle Al along the sprint lane from near last.

Well Deserved held at 10 years of age held his ground for third 1.4 metes away. The mile rate 2-01.6.

Restrained from outside the front line to the tail of the field as stablemate Demon Delight (gate two) crossed polemarker Highway To Heaven as the starter released the field to lead easily with the favourite Willie Go West (gate three) forced to lead up the outside division, Bettor Be The Bomb (one/one from the extreme draw), Phoenix Prince one/two from inside the second line and Tango Tara (gate five) trapped three wide. Things were to change when Tango Tara went forward to race exposed giving Willy Go West cover, with both Bettor Be The Bomb and Phoenix Prince pushed back a spot.

Racing for the bell Chris Alford eased Willie Go West three wide and with a brilliant burst of speed and almost crossed Demon Delight only for the turn to come up allowing Demon Delight to retain the front running. Switching from the rear to three back the markers in the last lap, Sutton saved every inch of ground while needing luck to take part in the finish.

Approaching the final bend Willie Go West was a spent force with Demon Delight giving a kick, Better Be The Bomb three wide and Phoenix Prince four wide looking the winner with both Highway To Heaven and Like A Wildfire using the sprint lane and it was Like A Wildfire inside Highway To Heaven who finished best to prevail by a neck over Phoenix Prince out wide to give the stable the quinella, with Highway To Heaven third three metres away.

Moving three wide on the final bend, Sunnumberone ran home best to score by 3.6 metres from Gee Cee Calder which had gone forward to race exposed for the last lap, with Sonokos Son third 7 metres back after following the leader. Open field for Guineas

■ With a number of fancied runners not being accepted for the Australian Guineas it has left the race wide open.

The smart Pinstriped, a winner of his only three starts, looks the one to beat now.

He was impressive in beating Pascero and Captivant at Caulfield in the C.C. Hayes Stakes over 1400 metres.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Captivant, an unlucky third last start, will come right into it.

He ran third in the C.S. Hayes Stakes over 1400 metres. at Flemington behind Pinstriped and Pascero.

Pascero ran a gallant second after two good wins at Sandown, and would probably lead them up over the ‘mile’ trip.

Then you have Forgot You, prepared by Trent Busitton and Natalie Young, who was favorite in last year’s Victoria Derby. He came home hard in the Hayes Stakes to run a good fourth.

One I feel that will be right in this is the Sydney youngster, Converge, a good third behind the top colt, Anamoe, in the Hobartville Stakes at Rosehill.

In the powerful Gai Waterhouse-Andrew Bott camp, he will be there when the whips are cracking. I like Pinstriped and Converge.

“Fast Track is designed to give the trainees a great education, and provide them with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to build successful careers in the industry”.

Successful applicants commence a full-time traineeship with a stud farm while studying for a Certificate111 in Horse Breeding- a nationally recognised formal qualification.

They are paid a full-time wage, even while studying.

To complement the on-the-job learning, students attend two intensive learning blocks in Scone (NSW), (six weeks in total), where they receive a mix of practical training and classroom theory.

They also take part in a variety of field trips and personal development workshops.

Fast Track is open to anyone who is 18 years and over, and previous graduates have come from far and wide, including Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales.

■ The popular Balnarring Picnics races are back in action next month on Sunday March 13th, the Labour Day Weekend.

As usual their top man, Terry Mulcahy, is right on the ball, with plenty of action all day, on and off the track.

It will be as usual a relaxing day, where you can get into your comfy outfits, and bring the children along with you for a fun day.

The Club, as usual, isright on the ball, with plenty of activities including some great racing.

They cater well for the children on the day.

Whilst for the Mums, Dads, and others, there will be plenty of food vans operating with a variety of foods available on the picturesque course.

For the children there will also be face painting, a petting Zoo, plus many other attractions.

The bar will be in operation, and you are welcome to bring your own picnic.

Gates will open at 10am, with the first race getting underway at 1.15pm.

One thing about picnic races, you can always get a winner, especially if you are a favourites punter.

Races from all over Australia will be covered on the screens on track.

On top of all that if you get in early you could win double passes.

Through Terry and his Committee, they are offering six double passes for the readers who can answer the following question about Balnarring.
