FRESH COVID ALERTS ACROSS THE NORTH

■ FRAGMENTS of COVID1-19 have been discovered by health authorities in sewage in Melbourne’s northern suburbs.

“Viral fragments in wastewater can be due to an active infectious case but it can also be due to someone who has had COVID-19 continuing to ‘shed’ the virus,” said a Department of Health representative.

“While they may not be considered infectious, it can take several weeks for someone to stop shedding the virus. The person or people shedding the virus may be local or visiting the area. People shedding the virus may or may not have or have had symptoms.”

At the Aurora testing site at Epping, an expected detection took place in a sample taken on April 22.

A test at the Glenroy Branch - Pascoe Vale site, covering Oak Park, Hadfield, Glenroy and Pascoe Vale found an enexpected detection on Tuesday last week (April 27).

On the same day, there was an unexpected detection at the Lower Plenty Main covering St Helena, Diamond Creek, Macleod, Briar Hill, Viewbank, Yarrambat, Lower Plenty, Watsonia North, Montmorency, Watsonia, Yallambie, Bundoora, Mill Park, South Morang, Greensborough and Plenty.

An ‘anticipated detection’ was confirmed on April 27 at the Merri Creek Main - Reservoir covering Wollert, Greenvale, Fawkner, Reservoir, Thomastown, Lalor, Roxburgh Park, Craigieburn, Somerton, Campbellfield and Epping.

The Northern Intercepting system at Fawkner also had an “anticipated detection”. This affects areas including Wollert, Greenvale, Fawkner, Reservoir, Roxburgh Park, Craigieburn, Somerton, Lalor, Campbellfield, Epping and Thomastown.

News of the wastewater fragment alerts came as Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton took to Twitter on Sunday night (May 2) urging Victorians to book in for a vaccine.

Darebin silences locals ■ Darebin Council has silenced a number of residents who sought to ask questions at its City meeting last week (Monday, April 26).

Disallowed questions relating to a notice of motion were received from George Kompogiorgas, Madelaine Clarke, John Villella, Mario de Luca, Cinzia de Luca, Dobe Temelkovski, Christine Lennon, Ernie Latore and Christine Banks.

Mayor Cr Lina Messina and Chief Executive Officer Sue Wilkinson said: “We have received several questions regarding this matter which have been disallowed pur-

suant to Council’s Governance Rules.

“The Governance Rules specifically prohibited questions on Notices of Motion and accordingly officers have endeavoured to contact the submitters of these questions prior to the meeting to inform them accordingly,” said the statement by the Mayor and the CEO. The questioners wanted to have their say with the Council about a notice of motion relating a Cramer St matter.

Meanwhile, in healthier financial news, Banyule Mayor Cr Rick Garotti has announced that his Council will pay down $10.26 million in debt in 2021-22, bringing debt down to record low levels. “Our community can have absolute confidence that Council is well positioned to meet the challenges today and those that will present in the future,” Cr Garotti said.

From 2022, three-year-olds in Nillumbik will have access to five funded hours of preschool per week in a program led by a qualified teacher. From 2023, services will be able to offer between five-fifteen hours of funded preschool.

Reservoir woman charged ■ Detectives from the Fraud and Extortion Squad have arrested a man and a woman as part of their ongoing investigation into an alleged fraud involving fraudulent builders’ licences.

The 54-year-old Sydney man was arrested in the Melbourne CBD while a 50year-old Reservoir woman was arrested in Reservoir on Thursday (Apr. 29).

Both have been charged with 300 offences each, including multiple counts of obtain property by deception, and make a false document.

The offences are alleged to have occurred throughout Victoria between 2013 and 2015.

■ Fawkner Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have charged a man following a sexual assault in Brunswick in February.

The incident is alleged to have occurred when a 30-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the vicinity of Glenlyon Rd about 6.20am on February 7.

Investigators have charged a 27-year-old Pascoe Vale man with stalking and sexual assault.

He was expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

Car park move ■ Banyule Council is calling for expressions of interest for the construction of a multi-deck public carpark and mixed-use development at the Cartmell St carpark site in Heidel-berg.

The Council owns the land and it is proposed thatthe municipality funds the public carpark component of the development and sells the ‘air-space’ for mixed use development.

Less satisfied with Nillumbik Shire Council

■ Nillumbik Shire residents are less satisfied with their local Council compared to 12 months ago.

Council performance dropped by 1.5 per cent, according to the Annual Community Survey, designed to measure community satisfaction with a range of Council services, facilities and activities.

The survey was conducted in February by Metropolis Research. the survey was conducted by telephone with 500 randomly selected residents instead of the traditional face-toface interviews.

Incident at Epping ■ Police have charged a man following an incident outside Epping Police Station last Wednesday night (Apr. 28).

It is alleged the man approached the front entry of the High St station in a gold Holden Commodore sedan about 9pm.

He allegedly mounted a footpath and pressed his car against two bollards before performing a burnout.

Police approached the man who then allegedly spat on an officer during his arrest.

He has been charged with seven offences, including; reckless conduct endangering serious injury, assault and resist an emergency worker, refusing a preliminary breath test, refusing a preliminary oral fluid test, careless driving, drive in a manner dangerous and drive motor vehicle causing loss of traction.

The 54-year-old St Helena man had his vehicle impounded for 30 days.

■ Darebin Council’s draft budget for 202122 includes funding for around 130,000 hours of aged care services, programs and assistance, the planting of 4800 trees and 250,000 indigenous plants, and the maintenance of more than 56 sports ovals and fields.

The Council says it is seeking feedback from local residents on their attitudes to the draft budget. There is a budget item of maintenance of more than 30kms of shared bike paths and reinvigorating streets through streetscape and place improvements across the city.

Cooper St scare ■ Fawkner Embona Police are calling for witnesses following an incident in Somerton on Tuesday afternoon last week (Apr. 27).

Investigators have been told the victim was driving his Ford Mondeo along Sydney Rd, Somerton about 12.30pm.

As the victim turned east onto Cooper St the offending driver in a silver SUV has pulled alongside the victim, pointed a firearm at the victim and verbally threatened him before driving east bound on Cooper St towards Epping.

Mill Park Centre re-opens ■ The first-class g substantialy transformation.

The much-anticipated reopening of Mill Park Leisure is being staged over two dates to allow community access to the state-of-the-art gym and group fitness areas as early as possible.

The aquatic area is due to open in late May, pending the last stage of construction works.

The modern 24/7 gym includes the latest equipment, expansive cardio and weight training areas, as well as medical and inclusive equipment options.

It is the first leisure centre in Australia to feature a full-sized 12ft rock-climbing wall, ensuring that members and casual visitors have access to the latest innovative equipment for their fitness journey.

The building has been designed with a focus on sustainability including automated lighting controls, solar panels, motorised external blinds for solar heat control and water tanks for rainwater re-use.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said Whittlesea Council was proud to be reopening the inclusive and contemporary centre.

Three local artists have combined their talents to mount an exhibition showcasing their unique skills.

The exhibition is the work of glass artist and watercolourist Jenie Yolland, textile artist Carly Leech, and basket weaver Jeanette Carter.

Jenie is well-known to Melbourne fans of slumped glass: she is regarded as one of Australia’s leading glass artists and regularly exhibits around the country.

Carly loves to capture nature: wild, windblown and in bloom. Carly uses free motion machine embroidery stitching onto yarn or fabric.

Jeanette has elevated basket-weaving to a new level. In 1986 she was awarded an International Teaching Fellowship to Pennsylvania as an Art Teacher for a year, where she was introduced to basket weaving.

The Bolin Bolin exhibition space at Bulleen Art and Garden lets people combine some art viewing and buying with a trip through the thousands of plants for sale. Bulleen Art and Garden is situated at 6 Manningham Rd W, Bulleen.

Cr Messina replied: “We will take this question on notice and provide a response to you separately.”

CEO passes buck ■ John Villella, Preston resident, asked a further question of Darebin CEO Sue Wilkinson at the latest Council meeting, but her answer passed the buck to a City staff members.

Mr Villella asked: “Since February 2021 I have asked to see an ‘Impact report’ that would indicate to the residents of Cramer St West that Council has considered how the measures in the Streets for the People proposal, will directly impact the residents and hinder their ability to function safely around their home.

“Can council please provide any such ‘impact report’ that shows Councillors considered how these changes will hinder the ability for residents to function naturally and safely where they live?”

Ms Wilkinson replied: “There is an extensive list of documents related to your question and the project on Council’s website. I will request the relevant Manager to call you tomorrow to assist in directing you to the location of these documents on the website.”

● Lawrence Money ■ Lawrence Money will be well known to readers of The Age and The Herald for his long career as a journalist.

These days he is a successful published author and performs a regular one man show in the Comedy Festival each year.

Having just concluded the season of his 2021 show, The World's Gone Mad at the Speakeasy HQ theatre in the city, he lamented the fact that his audience would head off after his show, instead of staying on to see the exciting young cabaret shows that followed.

So Lawrence saw firsthand how hard it can be for younger cabaret performers to break through, so he has decided to give them a leg up, by sponsoring a special fund raising cabaret night for them tonight (Wed., May 5) at the Speakeasy HQ theatre in the city.

Obviously Lawrence's idea struck a chord, as the first cabaret event is sold out, so future events will happen in the future.

Lawrence enjoyed his own new career as a performer so much that he that he wanted to help the talented emerging performers who are searching for an audience.

Peta Anderson, tap dancer extraordinaire, delivered her tap/drum routine faultlessly at a blistering speed. Georgia Anderson cheeky acrobatics added another dimension to this audience-inclusive, family friendly show.

The theatricality is electrifying with a perpetual motion of lighting, sound and sets.

Drummer Queen’s rise to enormous demands of this inventive stagecraft through physical and mental strength, versatility and teamwork.

Gazpacho at La Mama ■ Melbourne theatre identity Peter Green has written the historical drama Gazpacho, to be presented from May 18-3 at the La Mama Courthouse, Carlton.

On Tuesday night, August 18,1936 one month after the Generals rose against the Second Republic, Frederico del Sagrado Corazon Jesus Garcia Lorca, better known as Garcia Lorca, was taken by a Francoist death squad from the house of a friend in Granada, driven to a field near the farm called Cortijo de Gazpacho, and shot dead.

His remains still await discovery and exhumation, as do 114,266 other Republican dead.

Gazpacho takes up an oral history story from later in the Spanish Civil War. Four republican prisoners, including two women milicianas, await their last dawn.

Green says he was inspired, "no, compelled" to write Gazpacho by reading Ronald Fraser's Blood of Spain: An Oral History of the Spanish Civil War where the events in the barn with the four prisoners is related.

He was also compelled by the controversial events surrounding the 114,266 Republican dead awaiting exhumation, many of whom were executed out of hand for choosing democracy.

The play's director/composer dramaturg is Faye Bendrups, with research/additional dramaturgy by Guillermo Anad.

The cast of Gazpacho includes Jim Daly, Julie Dawson, Peter Green, Dion Mills and Louisa Williamson.

■ Melbourne theatre performer Lee Threadgold returns to the CLOC stage for his ninth appearance over the past 20 years.

What’s On Sisters In Crime ■ Sisters in Crime Australia will again join forces with the Sir Zelman Cowen Centre, Victoria University, to present its 15th Law Week event.

A panel comprising Louise Milligan, Jane Patrick, Michele Williams QC and Rachel Spencer, will discuss the experience of survivors of sexual assault and their journey through the Australian legal system.

Too often survivors are re-traumatised by their court trial, equating it to reliving the rape or sexual assault because of the questions they are asked, and the details they are required to give about their appearance, behaviour and past experiences.

Justice is often elusive in these cases. Almost 90 per cent of sexual assault victims in Australia say they are not willing to go through our justice system.

Of the cases that do go to court, approximately 10 per cent end in a conviction, allowing most perpetrators to continue in society unhindered and undeterred.

Even when survivors do get justice, the process is so bruising that many wish they had never tried.

The panel will discuss how the justice system could be improved in order to minimise the trauma for survivors, ensure perpetrators are brought to justice, and society made safer.

Adrifting The Reading ■ Wolves Theatre Company was delighted when Amanda Muggleton agreed to perform in a staged reading of Adrifting, and Tottie Goldsmith will be reading alongside Amanda on Monday, May 10 at 7pm at the Brunswick Ballroom.

Adrifting was first staged in a small theatre in Kew before the start of the pandemic in an attempt to gauge audience reaction. The play turned out to be a hit with both women and men.

On the surface, the play is a comedy about four women, three of them struggling to hold on to a house they can no longer afford.

But underneath it asks the question, what if other dreams are waiting on the other side of the ruins of the great Australian dream.

Fresh dreams full of purpose and more deeply fulfilling.

This staged reading will again gauge audience thoughts as the theatre company searches for an investor or investors for Adrifting.

Australian String Quartet to visit Melbourne ■ The Australian String Quartet will visit Melbourne on Tuesday, June 1 at 7pm at the Melbourne Recital Centre with a concert featuring recorder virtuoso Genevieve Lacey and a new work by Lachlan Skipworth.

This event will also introduce the ASQ’s newest member, cellist Michael Dahlenburg, in his debut tour with the Quartet.

Growing up in Cranbourne, Dahlenburg studied cello at the Australian National Academy of Music in Melbourne, before forming the award-winning Hamer Quartet, and becom-

ing the principal cello of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. He joined the ASQ in November last year.

The concert will feature a classic string quartet by Felix Mendelssohn, and contemporary work by Pavel Fischer. Completing the program are works by Australian composers Elena KatsChernin and a brand-new work by Lachlan Skipworth; both pieces feature Genevieve Lacey.

New memoir released

■ Sharon Stone says that a plastic surgeon gave her larger breast implants without her consent, telling her that they would "go better" with her body, she writes in her new memoir.

The Basic Instinct star, 63, explains in her memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice, that she was undergoing breast reconstruction surgery to repair her chest after doctors had to remove benign tumours that were "gigantic, bigger than my breast alone," in 2001.

But when Stone woke up from the reconstructive surgery, she discovered that the surgeon gave her large breast implants, The Times reported in an interview with the actress.

"When I was unbandaged, I discovered that I had a full cupsize bigger breasts, ones that he said 'go better with your hip size'," Stone said.

"He had changed my body without my knowledge or consent." And when Stone questioned her surgeon on her breast size, she said he told her that he "thought that I would look better with bigger, 'better' boobs".

Stone also writes in her memoir about the stroke and cerebral haemorrhage she experienced in 2001, at age 43. Speaking about that harrowing health scare with Willie Geist on Sunday Today, Stone said that she was lying in a hospital bed as a doctor told her that she was close to death. "The room was so silent," she said.

"When the room is so silent and no one's running around trying to fix you, that's when you realise how near death is and how serious everything is."

Stone recovered and took a two-year break from acting as she rebuilt her health, but said in a 2019 interview with Variety that the stroke stunted her career.

She went from being at the top of her game following 1992's Basic Instinct and 1995's Casino to struggling to find work for seven years, while also losing primary custody of her adopted son Roan. "People treated me in a way that was brutally unkind," Stone said.

"From other women in my own business to the female judge who handled my custody case, I don't think anyone grasps how dangerous a stroke is for women and what it takes to recover.

"I had to re-mortgage my house. I lost everything I had. I lost my place in the business," she continued. "I was like the hottest movie star, you know? It was like Miss Princess Diana and I were so famous, and she died and I had a stroke. And we were forgotten."

Stone has since reconciled with Roan, who is now 20, and lives with him and her two sons, whom she later adopted, Laird, 15, and Quinn, 14.

"I'm in a really grateful place," she told Geist. "When I was a kid, I always wanted to have a house full of kids running and screaming and dogs, and I got it. And I feel very blessed and happy about the life I got. We're happy together, and what's better than that?"

Taxing times are changing ■ Nike is one of several enormous and profitable US companies that paid no federal taxes in the past three years, according to a study released.

Other well-known names included Duke Energy, FedEx, and Salesforce, though dozens more businesses in sectors like energy and industrial chemicals made the list.

Nike, which took in $4.1 billion in profits in the same time period, paid what the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy tabulated to be a 18 per cent tax rate, meaning tax credits and rebates from the Federal Government amounted to more than the company paid.

Former President Donald Trump slashed the corporate tax rate in a sweeping bill in 2017, and President Joe Biden has pushed to raise it.

■ Who's that in the mirror? While many people haven't seen their friends during the Coronavirus pandemic, some believe they haven't even seen themselves recently.

Two in five Americans say that they've passed a mirror and not recognised their reflection at least once during COVID19.

A national survey of 2000 American consumers examines the evolution of respondents' relationships with their bodies since the pandemic started last year.

Over half the poll (51 per cent) believe the pandemic has negatively affected how they feel about their body. Another 42 per cent confessed to not feeling "at home" in their bodies anymore.

About one in two people (49 per cent) say they don't have the same level of confidence as they did prior to COVID-19.

The survey, conducted by One Poll on behalf of Massage Envy, also examined consumer confidence and discovered there are a few things that respondents said they would need in order to regain the level of confidence they had before the pandemic.

For 52 per cent, a vacation would help regain their confidence. A haircut (33 per cent), a night out (37 per cent), and a massage (37 per cent) all top the list as well.

For some, confidence involves more than just the physical, with three in ten consumers (31 per cent) saying they would like to start mental health therapy.

Researchers find the pandemic has taken more out of us than our confidence. According to the results, 47 per cent of Americans say their body has been aching in brand new ways since last March.

After everyone's daily routine was upended, the new daily ritual has started to take its toll. Nearly three in five (58 per cent) admit their daily routine since the start of the pandemic is inflicting major wear and tear on their bodies.

Half the poll admitted to feeling physically drained on a daily basis from the general stress of COVID alone.

Another 46 per cent blame the general "sameness" of the passing days for feeling drained. Almost two in five people (39 per cent) feel physically drained without in-person interactions and nearly a third (32 per cent) feel tired from practicing safety precautions while out and about.

■ A poll has showed that 64 per cent of Americans believe that "cancel culture" is a threat to their freedom.

The information comes from a Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll survey released exclusively to The Hill showing that 64 per cent of the respondents to the survey stated "that there is 'a growing cancel culture' that is a threat to their freedom, while 36 per cent said they did not view it as a threat to their freedom."

The poll also showed that 36 per cent of respondents said that cancel culture is a "big problem." Thirty-two per cent said it was a "moderate problem," and 20 pe rcent said it was a "small problem." Thirteen percent said it is "not a problem."

Merriam-Webster defines "cancel culture" as "the practice or tendency of engaging in mass cancelling as a way of expressing disapproval and exerting social pressure."

The results of the survey reveal a potential growing sense of people being unnerved by recent "cancellations" in the press and culture.

Several high-profile "cancellations" have brought the topic up as a main conversation in America, whether it is through the banning of books, such as the decision of Dr. Seuss Enterprises to stop publishing several of Dr. Seuss children's books earlier this month or the most recent act of Scholastic to pull the Captain Underpants spinoff due to its alleged "passive racism."

Magazine ■ As a teenager I was aware that Perry Como was a popular singer in the 1940s but his popular novelty songs of the 1950s gave him a whole new base of fans.

When his television series was shown in Australia I became a huge fan of Perry Como.

Pierino Ronald ‘Perry’ Como was born in Pennsylvania in 1912 to Italian immigrants. He came from a family of 13 children. Perry did not learn to speak English until he started school as the family only spoke Italian at home.

As a teenager he joined the local band where he played trombone, guitar and sang whilst serving his apprenticeship as a barber. He met the love of his life Roselle Belline at a picnic in 1929 and they married in 1933.

During the 1930s Perry toured with the Carlone Band as a featured vocalist for three years. In 1935 he joined The Ted Weems Band and was earning $50 a week.

He made his first recordings You Can't Pull the Wool Over My Eyes and Lazy Weather with the Ted Weems Orchestra. Perry was a crooner with a very relaxed style who sang the lyrics of a song pleasantly and with great feeling. His first child, Ronnie was born in 1940.

In 1942 The Ted Weems Band disbanded and in that year Perry recorded his first number one hit song, Did You Ever Get That Feeling In The Moonlight.

Perry was very popular and was given his own radio show. He signed with RCA Victor Label in 1943 and stayed with the company for the rest of his life. His first hit song for RCA was

During the 1940s Perry performed in many concerts and worked in Las Vegas. He often was asked to fill in at the Paramount Theatre in New York for his good friend Frank Sinatra.

His hit songs over the years included Till The End Of Time, Temptation, Prisoner Of Love, Wanted, Hot Diggity, Round And Round, Catch A Falling Star, It's Impossible, And I Love You So and Magic Moments.

He appeared in four films: Something For The Boys, Doll Face, If I'm Lucky and Words And Music. His singing voice has been used in countless films over the years. He started his television show in 1949 and it ran till 1967.

● Perry Como

Dream Along With Me was used as the opening theme song for the series. Perry would sit on a stool in his cardigan and sing to the television audience - he was known as Mr C. His guests on his television show included all the major stars of the period. Perry toured the world in concerts during the 1970s and 1980s.

He made his only trip to Australia in 1976 and performed at Festival Hall - I will never forget seeing him onstage.

During his lifetime he sang for American Presidents and the Queen - not bad for a barber from Pennsylvania. Perry Como dearly loved his wife Roselle and their three children Ronnie, David and Terri.

He also loved golf and had many golfing friends. Don Cherry, famous singer and professional golfer, told me he tried to contact Perry after Roselle passed away in 1998 but Perry was in consolable and could not speak to anyone.

Perry Como died on May 12, 2001, just days before his 89th birthday. A statue in his honour was unveiled in his home town of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania in 1997. He was a singing legend.

Tasmanian artist exhibiting at St Kilda Helene Weeding Tasmanian Artist.

Thursday April 22 saw the launch of Tasmanian artist Helene Weeding in her first venture in Melbourne.

As one entered the gallery Helene was at the door to meet her guests. A welcoming personality and made one really feel at home. She told each person a little about herself and her work then invited you to peruse her art.

She was introduced by Melissa Smith who is the Roving Curator and Program Officer for Tasmanian Arts.

Smith gave an interesting opening speech covering all of Weeding's art and background.

She also commented that Weeding did not use an easel but laid the canvas on the floor and proceeded from there.

In her reply Weeding, after thanking Smith for the introduction, told how she was inspired by the cloud patterns of her native Launceston which certainly showed in her paintings.

Her work was divided into rectangular frames and circular frames. All very colourful and pleasing to the eye.

Unfortunately, the exhibition closed on Wednesday April 28 but with the success of the opening night I feel sure that we will see more of this Tasmanian artist in Melbourne.

Linden New Art Natasha Bieniek new Solo Exhibition: Melbourne-based mid-career artist Natasha Bieniek will present a new solo exhibition at Linden New Art. The exhibition brings together a suite of works that have never previously been exhibited together before, including Bieniek's stand out painting Biophilia which was the winner of the Wynne Prize in 2015.

Bieniek's paintings are meticulous in their execution and demand close inspection/ They draw on notions of the past and present, linking the ancient tradition of the 16th century miniature painting with present-day image culture.

Bieniek will exhibit a new series of artworks called Mirror Paintings.

The Arts

with Peter Kemp This series depicts a collection of inner-city landscapes painted directly onto dibond - a material more commonly used for architectural and industrial purposes that has a mirroring effect.

Bieniek's new paintings depict sanctuaries within Melbourne that the artist sees as proving a sense of respite and tranquillity amid such frenetic conditions.

Exhibition opens May 22 and closes August 22.

A court date for May 1, next year has been set for the slanging match to be resolved. Crux of the issue is money allegtedly missing from Sebastian’s trust accout, alleged to amount to well north of one million dollars.

Remembering Cousin It ■ You may have been a fan of the weird tv show The Addams Family (1964-66) and recall the character Cousin It who was a diminutive character with hair to his toes, wearing a bowler hat and dark sunnies.

In fact Cousin It was an ex- circus performer who also had a part in Star Trek-the movie. Sadly the actor who played Cousin It passed away recently from cancer related illnesses .

Dropping the F-bomb ■ The Kingsmen vocal group were popular, particularly in the US during the early sixties. Their popularity rose like a rocket whith their rendition of Lonie.

Lonie was said to contain the magic F bomb word. The FBI were called in to investigate and sales rose to see Lonie, Lonie rise to No. 2 on Billboard.

It was later revealed the F bomb was part of the lyrics, but was hardly audible and the case dropped.

Shaking the family tree ■ News.com.au has revealed a rare photo of Johnny Depp’s 19-year-old son Jack. Unlike his old man, Jack has chosen drafting as an occupation despite Jack having those swarthy, good looks that made his dad famous.

Jack is one of two children from Johnny Depp’s 14-year marriage to Vanessa Paradis.

50 years Young ■ Remember when families used to huddle around the old TV set of a Saturday night to watch Young Talent Time hosted by Johnny Young. That was 50 years ago.

Looking back YTT produced many well known artists who went onto making their fortunes on Australian stage. The stars included Jamie Redfern, Debbie Byrne, Rod Kirkham. Phillip Gould plus many others. Johnny Young is still working and living in Perth.

My name is David Waugh.

I am a Freemason.

We believe Mankind should be exactly that.

Hello, my name is David Waugh. I live in the Macedon Ranges. I would like to tell you about a men’s fraternity to which I belong. The group is called the Freemasons.

As a hobby, I enjoy old cars, and I am currently President of the Daimler and Lanchester Car Club.

As I say, there are about 7600 Freemasons in Victoria. We support each other, our families and the community.

My husband Paul and I operate a horse rescue farm, buying horses from the racing and show worlds, and giving them new lives such as riding for the disabled, and personal rehabilitation work.

Across the world, there are about six million Freemasons. We actively seek to promote international understanding. We believe mankind should be exactly that.

I have has a life-long association with Freemasonry. I joined Wesley Collegians Lodge when I was in my 20s. You don’t have to been to any particular school to become a Freemason. There are no academic courses to pass.

Our members meet each month.

We learn life lessons (degrees), share a meal and a drink with each other, we have social functions that include our family members, and we enjoy doing charity work. We can also visit our mates at other Lodges. It’s fun.

The Australian Army Cadets is the youth military program and organisation of the Australian Army, tasked with supporting participants to contribute to society, fostering interest in Defence Force careers, and developing support for the Force.

The membership of a local Freemasons’ Lodge is likely to include a wide variety of members such as mechanics, engineers, office staff, outdoor workers, as well as doctors, lawyers and professional people.

Every occupation under the sun.

Together in Victoria, we donate about $2 million-$3 million to worthy causes through our Freemasons Foundation. And we roll up our sleeves to volunteer for practical hands-on work such as Bushfire and Disaster relief.

My community life has included membership of Rotary, active participation as a Church Warden at St Paul’s in Kyneton, and as a volunteer at the monthly Farmers’ Market in the Macedon Ranges region.

Freemasonry is not a religion. In fact, we don’t talk about religion or politics at our meetings. Across Victoria, there are many Masonic Centres where Lodges meet. We have 240 Lodges.

Our members are keen on making the world a better place.

Each Freemason has their own belief in a Supreme Being, but that is their own personal business. We work towards self-improvement.

There are about six million Freemasons worldwide. There are 7600 active members in Victoria. These are good men who want to become better men.

In my professional life, I was a school teacher at Ivanhoe. I also worked with young men and women as a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Australian Army Cadets.

We look out for opportunities to support each other. We go out of our way to avoid internal club quarrels.

At a time when the conduct of some males is justifiably under question in society, I thought you might like to know there is a fraternity of men who prize best behaviours, good manners and kindness.

This means becoming better citizens, better husbands and better fathers. For older men, that means being better grandfathers. Often it is the grandparents who play a chief role in bringing tolerance and understanding in families, especially when diversity and inclusion can be challenges.

Men, aged 18 or over, may benefit from considering membership of Freemasons Victoria.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke Sashay or stay — will RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under erase Australia’s ‘ocker’ drag past?

RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under will premiere on Stan this Saturday. The Australian-New Zealand version of the global reality TV juggernaut will share an Antipodean mode of drag with audiences around the world.

Veteran drag star RuPaul created Drag Race in 2009 for niche US cable channel Logo TV. It parodies reality TV competitions such as America’s Next Top Model, with a group of drag queens competing across various performance-related challenges to be (literally) crowned the next “Drag Superstar”.

RuPaul has since built up a media empire. The show, which moved to the mainstream US channel VH1 in 2017, has had successful spin offs in the UK, Canada, Thailand and Holland.

Drag Race has relocated drag culture from the fringes of society, making it a legitimate art form, lifestyle, and path to celebrity. However, the show has also been critiqued for ridiculing certain ethnicities as well as for excluding trans performers. Responding to this criticism, more recently, Drag Race contestants have included trans women and (so far) one trans man.

Until now, only the US and UK versions have featured RuPaul and his “Best Judy” Michelle Visage as judges.

Drag Race Down Under will also have this fierce duo on its main judging panel along with Australian comedian Rhys Nicholson. Both Australian and New Zealand drag queens will compete, with guest judges including singer Kylie Minogue and Kiwi film director Taika Waititi.

Having been accused of mainstreaming drag, eliminating its subversive impetus, it will be intriguing to see how this slick show — built on US histories of drag — approaches the Australian drag tradition.

A blokey culture In Australia, drag queens have tended to have an “ocker” sensibility, which has made them perhaps surprisingly welcome within a blokey culture.

There is an important difference, however, between the queer drag that drag queens perform and straight drag. Queer drag is aligned with LGBTQ+ communities and can powerfully reject the constraints of gender norms.

In contrast, straight drag usually entails heterosexual men dressing up in feminine clothing for the sake of comedy — and it can be used to mock women.

Australian screen culture reflects the place of both these forms of drag in broader Australian society.

Australian TV has long featured straight drag. Early on, it often did so by imitating the English tradition of pantomime dames.

For instance, in the 1970s, the TV character Aunty Jack sported a blue velvet dress, a moustache and one golden boxing glove.

Dame Edna Everage was also born of this tradition.

Played by straight cis man Barry Humphries, Edna first appeared on TV in the 1950s as a character satirising suburban Australian housewives. She went on to become a larger-than-life “Dame” with sequined cat-eye glasses.

In Australia the practice of straight drag is also associated with laddish behaviour. Certainly, the burly blokes on The Footy Show were notorious for donning women’s garb for comedy sketches.

Despite stark differences between the two, queer drag and straight drag are often unusually interconnected in Australia because both feature aspects of the “ocker”.

While queer drag is celebrated in LGBTQ+ bars and clubs every night, straight venues around Australia — including RSLs and rural pubs — also regularly host queer drag queens.

Queer drag also looms large in Australia’s collective consciousness. Notably, in the 1960s, the queer cabaret troupe Les Girls in Sydney’s Kings Cross became a “must see” spectacle for mainstream Australia. These glamorous performers appeared to be beautiful women but were all queer men dolled up in wigs, makeup, sequins and feathers.

The most famous Les Girls showgirl was the busty “bombshell” Carlotta. In the 1970s, she also became Australia’s first transgender celebrity. Carlotta has performed drag throughout the country for more than 50 years and remains a revered queer figure.

Discussing how queer drag became so accepted in blokey Australian contexts, Carlotta has said Australian drag queens are unique because they “have that ‘ockerish’ sense of humour and it related to most Australians”.

Carlotta was an inspiration for the international hit film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, in which three Sydney drag queens travel through the outback on a lavender bus, performing drag in remote locales.

It presents striking juxtapositions between the queens’ elaborate, shiny costumes and the red Australian desert.

These iconic drag queens also enact a conspicuously Aussie sense of irreverent humour that is validated by the “ocker” characters around them.

For instance drag queen Bernadette is enthusiastically applauded in a rural pub of rugged blokes when she retorts to an aggressive woman: Now listen here, you mullet. Why don’t you just light your tampon and blow your box apart, because it’s the only bang you’re ever going to get, sweetheart.

Priscilla solidified “ocker” drag queens as representative of an Australian brand of queer drag.

However, this new season is yet to reveal just how “ocker” Aussie Drag Race queens can be.

Oscars 2021 Chloé Zhao has made history at the 93rd Academy Awards as the first Asian-American woman and first woman of colour to win Best Director. She won for Nomadland, which Zhao also edited, produced, and adapted as a screenplay (from the book by Jessica Bruder).

Only one other woman has ever won Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow for The Hurt Locker in 2008. Zhao and fellow nominee Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman) were just the sixth and seventh women to receive nominations.

This was one of a trifecta of above-the-line prizes that went to women. Fennell won Best Original Screenplay for Promising Young Woman and Zhao for Best Picture.

Women were also celebrated in technical areas where sexism and gender disparity are even more entrenched.

Michelle Couttolenc won an award for Best Sound (Sound of Metal) and Jan Pascale for Best Set Decoration (Mank).

Mia Neal and Jamika Wilson made history as the first African-American winners in the category of makeup and hairstyling (with Sergio Lopez-Rivera) for their contributions to Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.

Women also accepted awards as film producers: Dana Murray won Best Animated Feature with Pete Docter (Soul), Alice Doyard won Best Documentary Short with Anthony Giacchino (Collette) and Pippa Ehrlich won Best Documentary Feature with James Reed (My Octopus Teacher).

This year, with shrinking audiences and pandemic restrictions, there was a bitter irony in the fact women won more Oscars, across new and highly visible categories, than ever before.

Following “salt of the earth” Fern (Frances McDormand) on her journey through the American West, we experience her ups and downs, recognising the emotional impact the devastation of precarious employment has had on her. The brutal 21st century reality of disempowered (non-unionised) workers becomes fodder for a narrative focusing on an individual’s personal growth — including happily working for Amazon no less (it’s “good pay,” Fern says).

It’s poetically charged in its understatement, and features excellent performances by McDormand and David Strathairn as her love interest.

It’s also better than most of its contenders, including the sophomoric Promising Young Woman and the irrepressibly dull Mank. The only exception is Judas and the Black Messiah: the best film nominated for an Oscar this year (if not the best film of the year).

Rourke’s Reviews Miss Juneteenth ■ (M). 99 minutes. Now streaming on Fetch.

Despite a number of overly familiar story beats, this flavourful, heartfelt drama offers up characters who deserve our time and attention, bolstered even more by two wonderful lead performances.

Nicole Beharie stars as Turquoise Jones, a hard-working mother who is known across town as a former winner of the prestigious Miss Juneteenth pageant (created to help commemorate Emancipation Day, when slavery was officially ended on June 19, 1865), who is determined to enter her teenage daughter Kai (Alexis Chikaeze) in the contest.

Kai isn't really interested in competing, but Turquoise is insistent, as the winner will be offered a full scholarship to the university of her choice.

As her own life didn't work out as she would have liked, Turquoise is going to make sure Kai doesn't repeat the same mistakes.

Miss Juneteenth nicely captures the world in which Turquoise and Kai inhabit, but some plot turns and character arcs are too easy to see coming, giving the overall story a predictable, deja-vu feel about it.

Debutant writer-director Channing Godfrey Peoples obviously cares about her characters and where they may be heading, and makes sure the audience does to. Beharie and Chikaeze are simply terrific.

Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 ■ (M). 119 minutes. Available to rent or buy on AppleTV. Based on the best-selling book

by Cho Nam-joo, this highly anticipated big screen adaptation proves to be a mixed blessing, bringing important subject matter to light, while also not quite delivering the genuinely emotional gut-punch its source material did.

Jung Yu-mi plays the title character, a 30-something housewife and mother who has given up a successful career to devote all her time to husband Dea-hyeon (Gong Yoo) and daughter Ah-young, who is now two years old.

Exhausted and under-appreciated, Kim's frustration turns into something more worrying when she briefly takes on the persona of her mother at Dea-hyeon's family's house during a Lunar New Year visit.

Consulting a psychiatrist, Deahyeon wants to understand his wife's increasing mood swings, but Kim's behaviour is a reaction to a

societal patriarchal structure that has crushed many a woman's dream and self-worth.

The book is an excellent, matter-of-fact account of generational, systemic gender inequality, told in a deceptively simple style that actually creates multiple layers, showing a problem that is still firmly entrenched in society (it's fascinating to note that Korean actresses and singers who liked and supported the book were vigorously attacked online).

Cho's vivid, affecting details, chronicling decades of genderbased injustice, is understandably condensed for its movie incarnation, but for me, too much has been excised (some flashbacks are initially confusing, as they appear without context), while the book's critical tone is softened by shifting some of the focus onto Dea-hyeon and his attempts to 'fix' Kim's problem.

This, and along with the entire third act being completely altered, ultimately mutes the film's impact and the book's point (the final pages were a particular kick in the teeth).

Actor Kim Do-young (All About My Wife) makes her directorial (and screenwriting) debut, and while admirably staying away from melodrama, struggles to fluidly thread the long-term pieces together (there are a couple of nice stylistic touches though), jettisoning not only crucial moments in Kim's life, but also those of her mother and sister.

Kim Do-young does make sure however that she gets strong performances from her cast. Jung, so good in films such as My Dear Desperado, Psychokinesis, The Table, and of course the blockbuster Train To Busan, is outstanding here, making us care for Kim and her state-of-mind.

While not quite up there with Jeon Do-yeon's phenomenal turn in the moving Birthday, this is still a memorable performance.

Yoo (The Age Of Shadows) offers solid support, while praise must also go to Kim Mi-kyung and Park Sung-yeon, as Kim Ji-young's mother and Team Leader respectively.

There are strong moments in Kim Ji-young, Born 1982, as well as a terrific central performance, and while the subject contained within needs to be fully revealed and examined, an important, insightful and heartfelt book has become an interesting film that doesn't reach the same provocative, powerful heights.

Doomben 10,000 atrracts best

■ Some of Australia's best sprinters are likely to tackle the popular Doomben 10,000 to be run on May 15.

At present, the bookmakers have the world's best sprinter, Australia's own Nature Strip, in the care of leading trainer Chris Waller as favourite..

The stable has already sealed his slot in the rich $15 million Everest, over 1200 metres, to be run on October 16.

Already he has been put up as the early favourite for the Everest at $4.50.

The Doomben 10,000 would be an ideal rehearsal for the big one, as it is run the same clockwise way as the Everest.

For the Doomben race, he is being quoted in the early markets as $2.50 favourite, and rightly so.

Back on April 10, the son of Nicconi, scored by two lengths in great fashion in the T.J.Smith Stakes at Randwick.

On the second line, the bookies have the former Victorian sprinter Eduardo, now with top Sydney trainer Joseph Pride, as second favourite.

Since joining the Pride stables, he had won his two starts before running third in the T.J.Smith Stakes, and is racing in great form.

He was previously raced in Melbourne, and has improved immensely since arriving.

Eduardo is being quoted at around the $4.60 mark, and will be in the firing line for sure, and could start favourite, if the Waller stable decides to give the race a miss with Nature Strip.

Next, we have the top sprinter Masked Crusader, who is racing really well, and is on track to also run in the Everest in October.

Michael Hawkes from the Hawkes team, said they have been inundated with inquiries about him to run in the Everest, but they are biding their time.

I feel the Doomben 10,000 would be an ideal race for Masked Crusader as a lead up.

Have a look at his run in winning the William Reid Stakes back on March 19, when beat a good field of sprinters, by 2.5 lengths being eased up, and later a great second to Nature Strip in the T.J.Smith Stakes.

Although beaten by two lengths in the T.J., he was in a lot of trouble about 200 metres from home, when his rider Kerryn Mc Evoy crashed into another runner trying to get a run, by the time he got out, it was all over.

It would pay to forget his run in the All Aged Stakes, he was slow into stride, and was last at the 600 metre mark, and finished well to run fourth. Forget he went around, he is good on his day.

You can't possibly leave him out, if they decide to run him in it.

The James Cummings-trained six yearold,Trekking is smart on its day, and a winner of over $6 million in stakemoney, and is a Stradbroke winner, and a good second to Hey Doc, in the Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley, last year.

However, the afore mentioned, might be too quick, seeing he is approaching seven years of age come August 1.

We haven't seen the top South Australian

● Gytrash.Racing Photos. last year, and connections are hoping he will be ready to race in the Everest. The Queensland sprinter, Jonker, has the form to be a chance on his home track. Prepared by leading trainer, Tony Gollan, the five-year-old ran a good third behind the very smart Eduardo, second favorite for the big race. From his 25 starts, he has won four with seven minor placings, and has always raced against the best.

Deni Diggers’ Cup ■ The Deniliquin Diggers Cup held at their picturesque track on Anzac Day, was in bright sunshine, with a good crowd in attendance.

The Club, through the hard work of Secretary Joan Douglas, and her husband, Russell, the President, and a hard-working committee, put on a great show.

I had the pleasure of doing the P.A. on the day, accompanied by the racecaller Nigel Killip, his wife Caroline, who looks after the Punters Club on the day, and their son Jake.

One of the greatest thrills I have ever had in my life, was when I was asked to read the ANZAC Ode on course.

The Club organised Fashions on the Field on the day, with local and City bookmakers on site to lay you the odds on Interstate, and local races, plus the tote in operation.

The Club provided food and refreshments on course.

Like all the Clubs through the virus, they missed last year, but bounced back in a big way on ANZAC Day. Some of the highlights of the day included a treble to Nathan Punch, while Bradley Vale saluted twice for popular Corowa trainer Rick Freyer.

The White Lion Hotel and Motel Cup was won by Boogie Woogie, with a top ride by Bradley Vale.

The weather was great, and Nigel was right on the ball with his calls. Overall a magnificent job done by all at the Deniliquin Racing Club, thank you for a top day.

Trust’s great day

■ The National Jockey Trust was extremely grateful to the Woodlands Golf Trust Fund for their Golf Day at their picturesque course.

The fund raised nearly $15,500 on the day, due to the great work of the organiser John Sweeney, who worked tirelessly to get the show on the road, organising sponsors for the Golf on the Day. John is the livewire who gets all the action going each year around March, helping both the National Trust for the jockeys, and the Woodlands Trust Fund. A brilliant job by John Sweeney, known as the Maestro.

Rushed forward at Stawell ■ Stawell commenced the week on Monday April 26 with a 10 race card resulting in some rough results during the afternoon.

■ Marong’s Trevor Patching combined with Jackie Barker to land the Gavin Pahl Builders 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 1785 metres with Art Major-Jaz Equity filly Abbie Lincoln paying tote odds of $22.20.

Raced by Trevor, wife Marie and well known harness devotee Darren Carroll, Abbie Lincoln at start number 12 settled one/one from gate five in the early stages, but with several moves being made ended up at the tail of the field as Cocorocks (gate four) crossed Our Arabella (gate 3) shortly after the start.

Moving forward three wide in the final circuit, Abbie Lincoln sustained a long run to prevail by 2.1 metres over the hot favourite Im Arts Bettorsecret first up in Oz which led on turning after racing exposed for the final circuit, with He Will Wantano running his usual honest race for third 12.2 metres away after trailing the runner up home. The mile rate 1-58.6.

■ Local Concongella part-owner/trainer Ken Taylor snared the Little Stems Pace over 2180 metres with Kempseys Delight, a 8Y0 gelded son of Bettors Delight and Romancer who was making his 123rd appearance at the races.

Driven a treat by Grant Campbell, Kempseys Delight starting inside the second line never left the markers settling three back as the short priced favourite Rocknroll Rhylee led from gate two.

Gaining inside runs in the last lap, Kempseys Delight was eased away from the inside to challenge the leader on the final bend and drew clear on turning.

Looking likely to win easily halfway up the running, Kempseys Delight ($18.00) just lasted to win by a neck from the fast finishing Tryna Portray from last returning a mile rate of 2-01.4.

Rocknroll Rhylee held down third 4.9 metres away. In was the seventh time that Kempseys Delight has greeted the judge.

■ Carisbrook part-owner/trainer Tim Mortlock was successful with Camlach-Double Header gelding Double The Hunter ($22.20) in the 1780 metre D & Y Harris Plumbers 2Y0 Maiden Pace.

With Jack Laugher in the sulky, Double The Hunter coming off an eye catching third at Mildura during Cup week rushed forward from outside the front line to lead on the first turn and allowed to run, blitzed his rivals to score by 10.9 metres in a rate of 2-01.3 from Hello I Tea which trailed and Ourbeachbabe (four back the markers) who was 3 metres away.

■ The feature on the day was the Kaye Matthews Tribute for female reinspersons over 1785 metres which saw Terang pair Marg Lee (trainer) and Codi Rauchenberger (driver) victorious with smart 4Y0 Big Jim-The Black Queen gelding Batman Barry, a $1.80 favourite.

Beginning with a wing on every foot from gate four to lead easily, Batman Barry toyed with the opposition, reaching the wire 2.8 metres in advance of Sasscilian (Ellen Tormey) which trailed, with Premonition (one/two – three wide to outside the leader at bell) third a half head away for Kate Gath. The rate 1-57.9.

Moves at Melton ■ Tabcorp Park Melton raced on Tuesday and 13Y0 Pegasus Spur-Faint Hearted gelding Left Right Andcentre was a gigantic victor of the IRT Australia Trotters Handicap over 2240 metres when having his first outing since September last year.

Trained locally in nearby Rockbank by Simon Diacono who’s last success had been Our Red Sky Night at the same track in 2016, Left Right Andcentre coming from 20 metres with Richie Caruana in the sulky spent most of the race at the rear as Dream Over led from barrier three.

Sent forward three wide in the last lap, Left Right Andcentre sprinted brilliantly to lead on the home turn and score easily by 7.8 metres from Bad Boy Jay Jay which trailed the leader and third placegetter Dream Over who was a half neck away third. The mile rate 2-04.7. It was the winners first success since October 2017.

Bred and raced by Jim Connelly, Kyvalleyhoneybunny enjoyed a sweet one/one trip from gate four trailing Astro, with Right Of Reply leading from gate five.

Joining the leader on the final bend after Astro galloped, Kyvalleyhoneybunny led on turning with Algorithm giving chase after following him throughout. Running home strongly, Kyvalleyhoneybunny registered a 9.6 metre margin over Algorithm, with Luna (three back the markers) third a head back.

■ Five year old American Ideal-Caribbean Blue mare Miss Blue Glory was a strong victor of the 1720 metre All In One Property Pace for astute Toolern Vale trainer Adam Kelly.

Driven by Greg Sugars, Miss Blue Glory was sent forward three wide from gate four to park outside the pacemaker Shawami Lass and with Sugars dictating the terms, Miss Blue Glory surged clear on the final bend to score by 3.5 metres in a slick 1-55.2 over Musztang (one/ two) and Miss Victoria which trailed the winner finishing 3.7 metres away in third place.

■ Toolern Vale’s John Justice landed the Dynamic Print Group Pace over 2200 metres with 5Y0 Changeover-Smoken Su mare Smoken Shazza, a recent stable addition.

Given an easy time four back along the markers as the leader Smooth Deal ran along, Smoken Shazza was eased away from the markers in the last lap to race uncovered. Given full rein on turning, Smoken Shazza outstayed the leader to greet the judge 1.2 metres in advance of him, with Chrissy Divinyl 6.4 metres back in third place after trailing the leader. The mile rate 159.4.

8 events at G’long ■ Wednesday saw Geelong race with an interesting eight event card honoring some of the past club committee members, presidents and assistants.

■ The Philip Nott Memorial Vicbred Pace named in honor of past President, committeeman, bookmaker and owner was taken out by Tyabb part-owner/trainer Geoff Clout’s 5Y0 Grinfromeartoear-Classic Malibu gelding Malibu Jack in a mile rate of 1-59.9.

Driven by Connor Clarke, Malibu Jack (gate two on the second line) received a lovely run through at the start to settle three back in the moving line as Breathe Easy (gate two) led.

Going forward three wide solo in the final circuit, Malibu Jack led on turning to record a 1.2 metre margin over Bring The Flave along the sprint lane from three back the markers and Shady Dancer which trailed the weakening leader who was 5.1 metres away.

■ There was a great story to the Jack Powles Memorial Trotters Handicap over 2570 metres with the winner Leanne Leeann, a 5Y0 daughter of Danny Bouchea and Possum Point greeting the judge for veteran Inverleigh trainer/driver Bob Kuchenmeister being bred by Jack.

Stepping cleanly from barrier five to race uncovered, Leanne Leeann crossed the pacemaker Di Li mid-race and proceeded to lead for the remainder of the journey, scoring by 2.5 metres from Easy Pickings which battled on well after racing outside her.

Ever reliable mare Fear Not (one/one) ran her usual honest race for third 11.9 metres away. The rate 2-06.1.

■ The Yabby Dam Racing Trotters Mobile went to Ross Creek trainer Norm McVitty’s cleverly named 5Y0 Bacardy Lindy-Pepperell Mistral mare Fun On Rum. Driven by Michael Bellman, Fun On Rum was quickly away from an inside second line draw to settle four back in the moving line after Shield Maiden had crossed polemarker Louieville Lass.

Easing three wide in the last lap, Fun On Rum ran home best to blouse a game Shield Maiden by 6.3 metres in 2-02.9. First starter Baltica ran on nicely from four back the markers after a slow beginning to be third 1.2 metres back.

■ Truganina trainer Anthony Spiteri was in the winners stall following the victory of 4Y0 Bells And Whistles-Becky Cee mare Ring My Bells in the 1609 metre Flying Brick Cider Maiden Pace. Driven by Ballarat’s Connor Ronan, Ring My Bells second up since October last year began best to lead from gate three and well rated, was never headed, greeting the judge by 1.9 metres in advance of Calculating Dancer which trailed, with Lenny Tee (one/three) running on late for third a neck back. The mile rate 2-02.3.

Cosy at Kilmore ■ At Kilmore on Thursday, Melton based cotrainers Anthony Butt and Sonya Smith took the honors with a stable double – 3Y0 Somebeachsomewhere-Leslie Jay gelding Torquoise Stride taking the Fireprotect From Hygain Pace over 2180 metres and 3Y0 Father Patrick-Without Fear gelding Have No Fear the J & A Mazzetti Trotters Mobile over the same trip, both driven by Anthony.

■ Turquoise Stride began brilliantly from gate five to lead before allowing Sayitaintso Joe to cross him with a mile to travel.

Enjoying a cosy passage, Turquoise Stride used the sprint lane to gain the day by a head in a punishing finish over the leader, with Jemstone Glory also using the sprint lane for third 1.2 metres back after following the pair. The mile rate 1-58.

■ Have No Fear after a one/one trip from inside the second line went forward with a rush racing for the bell to cross the pole line pacemaker Tequila Bree and lead for the final circuit, accounting for Kyvalley Hotspur (one/twoone/one-one/two last lap) by 9 metres in a rate of 2-02.5. Amour Fraternelle (three wide last lap from four back) was a fast finishing third a head away.

■ Bolinda’s Brent Lilley snared the Jet Roofing Pace over 1690 metres with Double O Heaven, a Kiwi bred 6Y0 daughter of Auckland Reactor and Top Tart.

Driven a heady race by the stable’s Ross Payne, Double O Heaven led throughout from gate five, giving her rivals the slip on the final bend to score by 2.5 metres from Chooz Reactor which raced outside her for the journey, with Rose Cooper third 1.1 metres back after trailing the winner. ■ Locksley owner/trainer John Nissen may have something special in Love You-Elusive Charm gelding Locksley Lover who made it two from two this time in with a strong performance to land the Momentum Gaming 3Y0 Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres.

Driven by Shepparton’s Bec Bartley, Locksley Lover after racing roughly from gate five as the start was effected settled three back in the moving line as Abundance and Chris Alford led from outside the front line.

Going forward three wide solo in the last lap, Locksley Lover ran to the wire impressively to register a 5.7 metre margin over first starter Monarch Stride which trailed the leader who went off stride on the final bend. Celebration Stride (three back the markers) was third 3.5 metres back after using the sprint lane. The rate 2-02.4.

M’boro. highlight ■ The highlight of Maryborough’s unusually small six race card on Friday was the second heat of the Country Clubs Championship over 2190 metres with The Worlds Best Hoof Oil being the sponsor on the day – the victor being Toolern Vale based trainer Amanda Grieve’s ex-Kiwi Hes Watching-Pukpuk Princess 4Y0 gelding Hezacrocwatcher who made it two from two on Australian soil.

Driven once again by Anthony Butt, Hezacrocwatcher (gate three) was unable to cross noted leader Mynameisjeff on his inside, before surprisingly being handed the lead on a platter hitting the back straight in the first occasion.

Once at the head of affairs, Hezacrocwatcher became almost unbeatable and that’s the way it panned out, coasting to the wire 7.2 metres in advance of Stingray Tara (one/one – three wide home turn), with Mynameisjeff a disappointing third 2.6 metres away. The mile rate 1-56.3.

Police Latest Charges after sexual assault ■ Fawkner Sexual Offence and Child Abuse Investigation Team detectives have charged a man following a sexual assault in Brunswick in February.

The incident is alleged to have happened when a 30-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in the vicinity of Glenlyon Road about 6.20am on February 7.

Investigators have charged a 27-yearold Pascoe Vale man with stalking and sexual assault.

He was expected to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court.

H’cote Junc. fatal ■ Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a fatal crash which occurred in Heathcote Junction on Saturday afternoon. Investigators have been told a 43-year-old Benalla man was riding along Epping-Kilmore Road about 12.55pm.

He lost control of his red Victory motorcycle and crashed. The rider was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but later died.
