SUBURBAN LOOP WORKS RAMP UP
■ A massive program of early works on the State Government’s Suburban Rail Loop is ramping up as the project powers towards tunneling in 2026. Clayton Rd is now closed to vehicles between Colonel St and Haughton Rd from yesterday (Tues., Aug. 27) until late-October to move underground utilities and to deliver a replacement park featuring new exercise and play equipment. “This significant program of works is being undertaken at the same time to minimise the impact to the community and reduce the overall time roads are impacted – with sections of Haughton and Carinish Rds also expected to be closed at times during the works blitz,” said a Government representative. Emergency vehicle access including ambulance access to the nearby medical precinct, will be maintained at all times. The Suburban Rail Loop team will work closely with local residents, traders and the City of Monash to minimise the impacts of the works and provide tailored support during this time – and locals are still encouraged to support local businesses. In Box Hill, Whitehorse Rd will be closed overnight at times throughout the rest of the year, while crews move utilities and build a temporary bridging structure to keep traffic moving along Whitehorse Rd during construction. In Burwood, underground services are being moved to make way for the new SRL station – with Burwood Hwy lane closures set to continue and full overnight closures in both directions at times. Coleman Parade in Glen Waverley will also be closed from September until later this year, as workers move underground services, while in Heatherton, Old Dandenong Rd will be permanently closed between Henry St and Kingston Rd from October to make way for the train stabling facility.
● Danny Pearson, State Minister “SRL is creating up to 8000 direct local jobs in construction, with more than 1400 people already on the project,” said the Government representative. “SRL will not only transform our public transport network, but bring thousands more homes, jobs and services to the areas around the new state-of-the-art stations.’ Danny Pearson, Minister for Suburban Rail Loop, said: “We're minimising disruption as much as possible while we build Suburban Rail Loop and we encourage locals and drivers to plan ahead as we get on with this critical work.” “SRL will slash travel times, deliver new travel connections and 70,000 new homes. We thank residents and traders for their patience as we build this city-shaping project.” Steve Dimopoulos, Oakleigh MLA, said: “We thank the community for their patience as we get on with delivering this city shaping project – I would also encourage people to continue supporting local businesses along Clayton Rd during this time.”
New open space in Box Hill South ■ Box Hill South will soon be home to a new green open space, with Whitehorse City Council set to transform a disused carpark adjacent to the Gardiners Creek trail into parkland. Whitehorse Council recently purchased the 2400sqm parcel of land at 35 Hay St, which had previously been slated for a seven-unit development. The site which is a natural extension to the Gardiners Creek linear park, will be trans-

formed into a green open space. It is envisioned that the new park could include a picnic area, a small area for basketball, grassland, local indigenous plantings and a pathway connecting into the existing Gardiners Creek linear trail. Many of the existing, established trees will also be retained. Mayor of Whitehorse, Cr Denise Massoud, said: “We are thrilled to have purchased this land to create a beautiful new park for our community. “It is essential that we invest in open space for the health and wellbeing of current and future residents. The State Government has set ambitious housing targets, with Box Hill’s population projected to almost triple by 2056. “In fact, public open space in the Box Hill precinct could reduce from 19m2 to 7m2 per person by 2056 if we don’t act. Council is seizing every opportunity to create more open space for our community." “This is just the beginning. We look forward to working collaboratively with the State Government,” Cr Massoud said.
