PROTECTION FOR AVENUE OF HONOUR
■ WHITEHORSE COUNCIL has supported a motion focused on engaging with the Victorian Government around protecting the Avenue of Honour trees in Mont Albert The Council is asking that the government release detailed information about which trees will be removed, and retained as part of the project. The was motion submitted and moved by Cr Amanda McNeill in relation to the Level Crossing Removal project. The motion expresses concern about accessibility of the new station, with the distance people with disability will have to walk to access the platform highlighted as an issue. Whitehorse Mayor, Cr Andrew Munroe, said the motion sends a strong message to the State Government about the need to protect these heritage trees and more than 500 trees in the project area. “We recognise the importance of the level crossing project to minimise traffic congestion and improve safety for drivers, however we need to ensure the interests of our community are represented and best outcomes achieved,” Cr Munroe said. “I would like to commend the Mont Albert and Surrey Hills communities for their advocacy efforts during the project. It is their efforts that have seen the Mont Albert Station building retained and positive design changes made to the designs as they are being completed. “We must still progress our efforts to ensure the amenity of our suburbs is protected.” ■ The Herald Sun reports that residents have launched a legal challenge to stop construction of a new super station between Mont Albert and Surrey Hills. According to the report, Friends of Lorne Parade Reserve have appealed to to the Supreme Court saying Planning Minister Richard Wynne had breached his obligations.
