■ CR ANDREW CONLON has been elected as Mayor of Manningham City Council. Cr Anna Chen is his Deputy.

At Monash Council, Cr Brian Little has taken the top local government role. Cr Shane McCluskey is Deputy Mayor.

Cr Kylie Spears was elected as Mayor at Maroondah City Council, with Cr Nora Lamont to be her Deputy.

Whitehorse City Council will swear in its Councillors tonight (Wed., Nov. 18).

Staying Close ■ State Parliament held sessions in both houses last week. The Andrews State Government tried to sell a COVID-19 slogan of ‘Stay Close. Go Further’. Their advertising consultants are paid big bucks for that type of marketing brilliance.

Whole lot of gas ■ Greens politician Tim Read (Brunswick) tried to hold Climate Change Minister Lily D’Ambrosio (Mill Park) accountable for Victoria opening up for gas exploration and the development of fracked gas through Western Port.

“Some European countries are disconnecting homes from gas and the ACT is building gas-free suburbs. Does this government have a plan to actually get Victorian households and industry off gas?” asked Dr Read.

Ms D’Ambrosio gave two long-winded answers ... but failed to mention the word ‘gas’ once.

Numbers game ■ Ryan Smith (Liberal, Warrandyte) was concerned in State Parliament last week about the number of questions unanswered by the Andrews Labor Government.

Mr Smith started reading the identifying numbers of the questions, but was stopped by Speaker Colin Brooks. It was a timely interruption. There are 1631 answers outstanding.

Blow it all ■ David Hodgett (Liberal, Croydon) has blasted the State Government over restrictions on students playing wind instruments.

“Music students are not asking for special exemptions. Currently students are allowed to play basketball, get sweaty in close and pass a ball around. Indoor swimming lessons are allowed and gyms are now back open, yet music students are denied the opportunity to learn and play their instrument in a COVIDsafe way,” Mr Hodgett said.

36 Councillors ■ Naomi Blackburn, Victorian Greens Head of Campaigns, announced late last week that 36 Councillor positions across the state had been won.

This includes Banyule (2 Councillors), Boroondara, Darebin (3), Greater Dandenong, Hobsons Bay, Manningham, Maribyrnong (2), Monash (2), Moreland (4), Nillumbik, Stonnington (2) and Yarra (5).

Gender equality ■ Some 272 women will take their place on councils for this term – representing 43.8 per cent of councillors, a new high for both Victoria and the nation.

Shaun Lenne, Minister for Local Government, said that Victoria is the first state in Australia to top 40 per cent women councillors and shows strong progress towards the 50 per cent target set by the Victorian Government’s gender equality strategy

Points of order ■ Even losing candidates in the Hume City Council elections were able to get a mention in State Parliament from Yuroke MLA Ros Spence. “There were also many candidates who were not successful on this occasion. In particular I would like to acknowledge the efforts of Chandra Bamunusinghe, Ravinder Kaur, Guri Singh, Paskal ElAli, YaseminYigit and Mikaela Sadkiewicz, each of whom worked incredibly hard and ran energetic and enthusiastic campaigns. Likewise, this term of council will not be the same with the absence of Geoff Porter, Drew Jessop and Ann Potter.

Manningham News Doncaster man hunt ■ Police are seeking public assistance to help locate missing Doncaster East man Stephen Lang.

The 48-year-old is active on social media but friends says they have lost touch with him in recent days and hold concerns for his well-being.

Stephen is believed to be driving a black 2008 Ford Territory wagon registered PVS 713. He is described as 180cm tall, slim build, brown hair with tattoos on right upper arm.

Whitehorse Gazette Nod to students

● Cr Nicole Seymour Cr Nicole Seymour did not have the numbers when she offered herself for the Mayor’s position at Knox Council, prior to Monday night’s vote which saw Cr Lisa Cooper take the top job. “While I was happy to put myself forward for a second term, discussion amongst the newly elected Councillors over the past week identified that the majority had a preference to embrace change as we commence a new term of Council,” Cr Seymour said. “Given this was the will of the majority, it was in the interests of unity that I did not nominate [Monday]. I congratulate Cr Cooper on being elected as the 20/21 Mayor and look forward to working with her and the new team of Councillors over the year ahead.

Yarra Ranges Council has experienced significant network issues across its phone and internet systems. The Shire’s 1300 368 333 number was available for emergencies only.

Phones at Sherbrooke Family and Children's Centre were also down. The breakdown affected rates payments, applications for permits or certificates, pool registrations and animal registrations. Supplier payments due last Friday were impacted.

Forest Hill schools push FUNDING CALL FOR BUDGET ■ Forest Hill MLA Neil Angus has called on Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas to ensure he includes funding in the State Budget to fix up schools in the Forest Hill district, in particular Vermont Primary School, Orchard Grove Primary School, Livingstone Primary School and Vermont Secondary College.

“I have called for the government to fund the essential works needed at these and others of my local schools many times in this place and thus implore the Treasurer to stop ignoring Forest Hill schools and finally provide this urgently needed funding,” Mr Angus told the Legislative Assembly last Thursday (Nov. 12).

Progress News Decision set aside ■ Jason Michaelidis was successful in approaching the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to have a Boroondara Council set aside about a planning permit for two side by side double storey dwellings at 8 Churchill St, Kew. Tribunal Member Frank Dawson said the permit should be allowed for the construction, on a property approximately 125 metres west from Belford Rd. The width is 15.4 metres.

Knox News Quiz contestants ■ Bayswater MLA Jackson Taylor has told State Parliament about winners for a quiz he had in a newsletter about local railway crossing removals.

19,523 Vics recover from virus ■ As at the weekend, Victoria had recorded no new cases of Coronavirus, , with the total number of cases at 20,345.

There have been no new deaths from COVID-19. To date, 819 people have died from Coronavirus in Victoria.

As at Saturday, this was the 15th straight day where Victoria had recorded zero daily new cases or deaths.

The Department of Health and Human Services is working with communities to ensure testing rates stay high across the state and we can ‘Stay Safe and Stay Open’.

A new proactive testing blitz started in Hume and Wyndham last Sunday (Nov. 15).

From Sunday, residents of Hume and Wyndham, with even the mildest symptoms, are being encouraged to get tested at one of the five testing sites with further pop up sites to come in the following days.

During this period, the Department will work with the local councils to better understand the opportunities to provide better access to testing and information, through forums, community leader sessions and letterbox drops.

More pop-up sites will also be set up in coming weeks at other local government areas, as well as summer hotspots.

Victorians are encouraged to come forward and get tested when even the mildest of symptoms occur.

The average number of cases diagnosed in the 14 days (Oct. 31 – Nov. 13) for metropolitan Melbourne was zero and regional Victoria was zero.

The rolling daily average case number is calculated by averaging out the number of new cases over the past 14 days.

The total number of cases from an unknown source in the preceding 14 days (Oct. 29 – Nov. 11) was one for metropolitan Melbourne and zero from regional Victoria.

The 14-day period for the source of acquisition data ends 48 hours earlier than the 14-day period used to calculate the new case average due to the time required to fully investigate a case and assign its mode of acquisition.

Winning students named ■ Bayswater MLA Jackson Taylor has spoken in State Parliament about winners for a writing competition: “Bayswater Primary, Aanchal Basel and Shaylee Gauci Fraser; The Basin Primary, Ethan Hack and Abi Goschnick; Bayswater North Primary, Tommy Walker and Annabel Arnst; Boronia West Primary, Koby Ryan; Bayswater South Primary, Katarina Durrance and Luke Wu; Bayswater West Primary, Lachlan Harris and Raelene Mena; Boronia K–12 College, Xavier Tronson and Will Savage; St Joseph’s Primary, Rirpeti Parker and Jasmine Dalton; and Our Lady of Lourdes, Tiana Hogg and Samantha Collard,” Mr Taylor said.

Mr Taylor said writing challenge, which involved close to 500 entries and nine local schools, a lot of them entering online as well.

■ Forest Hill MLA Neil Angus said he was honoured to join with RSL officials, parliamentary colleagues and others at last week’s Remembrance Day service on the steps of Parliament.

“It was an opportunity to pause and remember the great sacrifices made by so many Australians to defend our freedoms in wars over the years,” said Mr Angus.

“It was sad that the crowd was so small and technically limited to 10 people when the current restrictions for outside hospitality venues are for 70 patrons.

“This anomaly shows just how arbitrary and idiotic these restrictions are and how the Premier is just making up restrictions as he goes along, with in many cases there being no basis for them at all.”

The 29-year-old is wanted on warrant for driving related matters.

■ Nick Wakeling, Ferntree Gully MLA, told State Parliament about the difficult positions faced by small businesses from the COVID19 restrictions.

“I have recently been contacted by small business owners who, whilst they are open and trading, are still doing it very tough, like the Eastern Indoor Sports Centre, which has had very little income as they are entering their quietest summer months and only under-18s can use these facilities,” Mr Wakeling said.

“The owner of a dry cleaning business who has very limited income tells me that he has no work because his usual customers are working from home. Neither of these businesses, and many like them, are eligible for any State Government funding.”

NE Link praised ■ Box Hill MLA Paul Hamer has talked up the North East Link: “The North East Link Project does have some big impacts in the Box Hill electorate ... but certainly the feedback that I get is that the local community is supportive of that project. Endangered ducks at Lake Knox ■ Two pairs of the endangered blue-billed duck are currently nesting on the site at Lake Knox, Ferntree Gully MLA Nick Wakeling told State Parliament last Thursday (Nov. 12).

“First Friends of Dandenong Creek, the Knox Environment Society and Friends of Lake Knox Sanctuary have written to Development Victoria and informed me that, based on observations by citizen scientists within the last fortnight, two pairs of the endangered blue-billed duck are currently nesting on the site at Lake Knox,” Mr Wakeling told the Legislative Assembly.

“Back in August of last year I called for a moratorium on any work on this lake being destroyed, but this has been ignored to date by the Andrews Government.

“Given this new information I would hope that the Government acts immediately to halt any works on Lake Knox until this important news can be investigated and proper consultation is undertaken with the community,” Mr Wakeling said.

Sir, Those of us who value the local shopping experience should be very concerned that the availability of parking spaces at the James St shops continues to be eroded by inadequate on-site parking at the netball courts located on the former primary school property, and now by the Uniting Church development in Wood St. The Manningham Planning Scheme requires that for non-residential development in residential areas such as the church property, “adequate” provision is made for onsite parking.

The Uniting Church planning application failed to disclose that the two auditoriums/worship spaces are designed to seat a total of 450 people which requires 135 car spaces under the MPS. Instead the Uniti9ng Church applied for only 65 car spaces, despite calling for 120 spaces in their Functional Design Brief.

And this is despite having counted 95 cars arriving at church (April 23, 2017) before the planning application was lodged.

In approving only 65 car spaces Council staff gifted the Uniting Church a construction saving of approximately $1 million, but at what cost to the shopkeepers opposite and residential amenity in Wood St and Atkinson Sts. Is that what Council meant when they wrote: “We will work with the Uniting Church Property Trust regarding future plans to redevelop the site’?

It is past time that Manningham Counc il rejected predatory developments proposed near local shopping centres.

■ Police are appealing for public assistance as they continue to search for missing teenager Nicholas Mayes.

The 16-year-old was last seen in Doncaster East on September 19.

Investigators believe Nicholas may have travelled to the border of New South Wales between Wakool and Albury.

Police and family hold concerns for his welfare due to his age and the length of time he has been missing.

He is described as being 165cm tall with a medium build and brown hair.

Monash also won an award in the Environment (Council) category for the native bees and seeds kits that the Sustainable Monash team put together and delivered to interested residents during the COVID-19 ‘stay at home’ restrictions. The kits were used by residents to build little bee homes, to attract bees to gardens and encourage pollination.

Mayor Cr Brian Little said he was thrilled that the City of Monash was recognised with the prestigious Sustainable City of the Year award.

The Clayton Zone Project – education about litter prevention and how to recycle and dispose of waste correctly for people living in Clayton was Highly Commended in the Litter (Council) category.

Tree plant blitz ■ Thousands of native trees and plants are being planted in Melbourne’s north and east, as part of the North East Link project.

A new community survey has been launched to encourage locals to suggest where some of the 30,000 new trees that will be delivered as part of North East Link should be planted.

The state’s first green roofed park and ride will be built in Bulleen and has been fasttracked by four years to be completed in 2022.

The Banyule Flats, Warringal Parklands and the Yarra River will be protected as North East Link’s six-kilometre twin tunnel will run underground from Simpson Barracks to Bulleen Road, near the Eastern Freeway.

North East Link will give local roads back to local communities, create thousands of jobs and provide safer and quicker journeys for up to 135,000 drivers a day.

It will connect the M80 to the Eastern Freeway, slash travel times by up to 35 minutes, take 15,000 trucks off local roads and create 10,000 jobs.

Suburban Loop ■ Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for the Suburban Rail Loop Jacinta Allan this week announced $2.2 billion for initial and early works on Stage One of the project to run between Cheltenham and Box Hill, with the full project to eventually link every major train line between Frankston and Werribee via Melbourne Airport.

Works will start in 2022, creating up to 800 direct jobs in initial and early works and enabling launch sites to be established for tunnel boring machines in Melbourne’s south east.

The proposed locations of six new train stations have also been revealed, with the new line to start near Southland, underneath Sir William Fry Reserve.

Other proposed stations are next to Monash and Deakin universities – central to the Box Hill and Glen Waverley activity centres – and north of Carinish Rd in Clayton, where a transport super-hub will connect regional passengers to the loop.

These locations have been determined following 18 months of intensive project development and design.

Blast over school rules ■ Croydon MLA David Hodgett has blasted school rules that prevent students from playing musical instruments.

“The Department of Education and Training has placed restrictions on the use of woodwind and brass and singing in schools, limiting educational delivery to outdoor settings only.

“Today we have only four active cases of COVID in the entire state, yet all students who learn music as a subject or who sing or play blowing instruments are subject to significant limitations placed on their learning.

“As an example of the restrictions, music students are not even allowed to sing the French time names of notes for rhythmic dictation.

“Teachers are prevented from singing notes as part of key learning explanations. Indoors, students are forced to shadow play their instruments.

“That is like playing tennis without a tennis ball and with the coach not being able to see you. Whilst there is evidence of aerosol transmission of COVID via singing and playing blowing instruments, there has not been one documented case of COVID transmission in a music setting in Australia, yet all music students are being treated as if they are a leading cause of virus transmission,” Mr Hodgett said.

New leaders at Monash ■ Mount Waverley Ward Councillor Brian Little has been elected Monash’s Mayor for the next 12 months.

Cr Little’s focus is on steering Council through the economic recovery from COVID19 to ensure the best outcomes for the community.

He previously served as Monash’s Deputy Mayor in 2018-19. It is the first time he will serve as Mayor.

“It is an incredible privilege to be elected Mayor and, in particular, through this time of COVID-19 where there’s been so much change and uncertainty for all of us,” Cr Little said.

Push for Rowville roads ■ Rowville MLA Kim Wells last week asked a question in State Parliament about much needed roadworks in the local area.

“My question is to the Minister for Roads and Road Safety Minister, when will Wellington Rd, Ferntree Gully Rd and Kelletts Rd in my electorate receive much-needed upgrades?” Mr Wells asked.

“The Andrews Labor Government has totally neglected important roads in my electorate of Rowville.

“There was not one cent put into roads in the Rowville area in the 2019 budget.

“I have had countless emails, phone calls and conversations with constituents expressing their concerns with the safety of these extremely busy and crucial roads.

“I have had one constituent write to me saying that local roads are in such poor condition, with potholes and uneven services.

“It is getting very dangerous and the community are losing their patience.

“I will continue to fight on behalf of the concerned citizens of my electorate of Rowville until finally this Labor government agrees to do something,” Mr Wells told the Legislative Assembly.

Victorian Arts Bendigo Gallery Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion: Australia's first major survey of contemporary indigenous textiles and fashion opened at Bendigo Art Gallery last Thursday (Nov. 12) and closes on January 17. Entry to the exhibition is free.

The exhibition's Bendigo showing will be followed by an extended session at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra.

The word Piinpi is an expression that Kanichi Thampanya (First Nations people from the East Cape York Peninsula) use to describe changes in the landscape across time and space.

The exhibition offers a survey of contemporary First Nations fashion, and explores the concept of indigenous seasons and the way understanding of Country and culture are reflected in and inspire contemporary textile and fashion design.

Key works featured in the exhibition have been acquired by Bendigo Art Gallery and will form the beginnings of the Australian Fashion collection, a new collection for the gallery.

Some of the many highlights include ■ Four new commissions by Gunai, Waradjuri, Gunditjmara and Yorta Yorta woman Lyn-Al Young which respond to the indigenous seasons. Handpainted using ancient techniques the collection captures the subtle transformations of Young's Country over time.

■ A possum skin cloak made by Dja Dja Wurrung/YortaYorta Elder Rodney Carter.

The work showcases the continued resilience of the Dja Dja Wurring people from Central Victoria who are revitalising their cultural traditions through powerful forms of artistic expression.

National Gallery ■ The Ian Potter Centre NGV will reopen to the public on November 23.

In line with Victorian Government health and safety guidelines, the NGV will reopen implementing a range of public health and physical distancing measures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of staff and visitors to the gallery.

The measures will include free pre-booked tied ticketing, appropriate queue management, hand sanitiser stations across the Gallery and increased cleaning facilities.

Free and open to the public, NGVAustralia will present the largest exhibition of Tiwi art ever to be staged will showcase works from 1911 to the present day consisting of almost 300 works by over 70 artists.

The exhibition, including Destiny, Tiwi and Ivan Durrant: Barrier Draw will be open on November 23.

Schwartz Gallery ■ Anna Schwartz Gallery at 185 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, is re-opening.

The renovated, first floor gallery is presenting an exhibition of new works by Stephen Bram.

The new gallery space underwent a transformative renovation overseen by the gallery's original architect Denton Corker Marshal that reflects the ground floor architecture and creates a cohesive space.

The renovated Gallery 02 space will enable concurrent exhibition programs to be resented in both levels of Anna Schwartz Gallery, whilst creating a space for discussions and events. It will be inaugurated by a new series of large-scale black and white abstract painting s by Stephen Bram.

The exhibition of Stephen Bram works will be presented from November 18 until December 19 in Gallery 02 alongside the recently re-opened John Nixon exhibition Groups + Pairs - 2020 in Gallery 01.

Review: The Preacher ■ It’s strange watching stand-up comedy without a live audience to laugh at the jokes.

It takes some getting used to.

Equally strange is David 'Dave' Davidson's debut comedy show, The Preacher.

This is a weird show where Davidson literally recites the biblical text Ecclesiastes for laughs.

The only problem is Ecclesiastes wasn’t a particularly funny guy.

He was a little pessimistic about life in general and given to moralising.

“Vanity of vanities! All is vanity” is one of his many catchphrases.

That’s not Ecclesiastes only catchphrase and there are many more you may remember.

There's the bit The Byrds turned into a hit song in the 60s; a time to kill, a time to heal, a time to love, a time to hate, and so on.

There’s a lot you recognise.

Again, not especially funny and hearing them presented as material in a stand-up routine is decidedly surreal.

It's still better to be a wise man than to be a fool, is another one of his.

Laughter is madness.

What does pleasure accomplish.

And, while we’re at it, let’s not forget about the ladies.

Ecclesiastes, you may remember, seethes about women seducing and trapping men.

An honest man is worth one in a thousand; there are no honest women, he says.

“What’s the deal?” Dave asks us before throwing in a flatulence joke with sound effect.

I scratch my head and wonder where all this is leading.

The good Lord might have had many traits, but a sense of humour wasn’t one of them.

Sir John Monash Lecture 2020 ■ Exploration of Indigenous Country and culture through the prism of art, design and architectural practices is the theme of the panel discussion for this year’s Sir John Monash Lecture.

On Friday, November 27at 7pm panel members will discuss their individual practices and their shared interest in revealing the layers of history and memory that reside in place through Indigenous art and design.

Each year, the Sir John Monash Lecture is one of the most highly anticipated events on Council¡’s cultural events calendar and this year will be no different, except that due to COVID-19 it will be delivered online.

Monash Mayor Brian Little said he was proud of the reputation of the Sir John Monash Lecture as a forum for commentary on contemporary issues and the high calibre of this year’s panel, including Moderator Rhoda Roberts, prominent Indigenous arts leader, actor and broadcaster.

“I am excited for this opportunity for us all to learn more about Aboriginal knowledge, culture and connection to land through the work of our outstanding panel of artists and designers,” Cr Little said.

● Isaac Shatford ■ Our theatres have been dark for months, but that hasn't stopped Music Theatre Melbourne from running a New Musical Writer's Competition, to make sure we have some great shows for the future.

Entrants had to develop a musical that responded creatively to the experience of COVID-19.

And to add to the prestige of this competition, the celebrity judge on the panel was one of the world's greatest writers of musicals, Stephen Schwartz, creator of Godspell, Pippin, Wicked, and many more Broadway hits.

There were three finalists, but the winner of COVID The Musical was New Zealandborn Melburnian, Isaac Shatford, from a field of 61 entrants.

Schwartz was especially impressed by this new young musical creator.

"Isaac showed an especially high level of craft in both music and lyrics, as well as a strong grasp of story-telling, with nuanced and relatable characters," Schwartz said.

Isaac's musical has been given the working title of Ruth, and Music Theatre Melbourne is working with him to develop the work for its première production in September next year.

While Melbourne has been in lockdown, Isaac took a trip home to his birthplace and has been locked down in New Zealand, which gave him the plot for Ruth.

The story features a family reunion prolonged by the impossibility of getting away, and an assortment of characters is brought together long enough for every elephant in the room and skeleton in the closet to be revealed.

Isaac is a professional violinist and composer whose works have been performed nu the New Zealand and Christchurch Symphony Orchestras.

And he is truly delighted to win this award.

"It's incredible, that in this time of crisis, Music Theatre Melbourne has decided to continue developing original work, so I am beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to share this story with the community," he said.

"I can't wait to return to Melbourne - hopefully for good this time."

Local Theatre Dazza and Keif Go Viral in Space with Ya Mum ■ The year 2020 has been tough for the arts industry so kudos to the Fringe Festival for creatively bringing to life this much-loved institution. The 2020 virtual season, with its promos, pre-show lead-ins and broadcasts, screamed take notice.

The Fringe is a unique platform for creative experimentation. Its charm is you never really know what to expect.

Intro Dazza and Keif Go Viral in Space with Ya Mum. This is the second instalment in the Dazza and Keif Go Viral trilogy. At number two, a trilogy worth its salt should probably have you gutted you missed the first and full of excitement for the third. Can’t really say that is the case.

Let’s not underestimate however the pressure and challenges of the current situation on performers who thrive on the thrill and reaction of a live audience. Then, on the other hand, the lockdown has provided plenty of time to perfect and fine-tune work.

Unfortunately this Dazza and Keif failed to deliver on the laughs it promised.

Writer and performers Danni Ray and Keely Windred as Dazza and Keif gave solid and confident performances.

They interacted with ease and their dance sequences were fabulous - would have liked to have seen more dancing. Unfortunately, Dazza and Keif themselves are unlikeable, outdated and tired parodies of the worst/saddest kind of men - as women I don’t think this helps our cause.

There were also issues with the storyline that seemed disjointed and a little hard to follow at times.

While this ambitious hour-long production was delivered seamlessly to my laptop and screencast to my 56-inch TV screen - a view similar I think to the back row of your average theatre, I look forward to seeing them in their natural environment, for a second chance, live on stage.

The New Nine explores the desperation for change from a person who is very upset about the recent changes in their life" From the team that created the cult hit, Mime Consultant, and forged within the chaos of 2020, this show blends technical elements and on stage performance to create an experience tailor-made for digital audiences, and is a timely response to a year of political and social upheaval. All the while making it very clear that Patrick is not kidding about changing the number nine.

Bringing their skills in stand-up, physical comedy and theatre, Patrick presents off-thewall jokes and social commentary through charisma, charm and a possible mental breakdown.

“We just need to change the number nine” Collins says, “if a good show comes out of it then great but I’m really just here to change the number.”

Happy 40th birthday for St Martin’s Theatre ■ St MartinsTheatre celebrates its 40th birthday in 2020 by telling soulful, funny and disruptive stories with its alumni and young people in an online performance 40:40 Live at 4pm on December 12. This performance will feature more than 60 young people.

St Martins has a long, rich history and has sparked the careers of artists across film, television, music, theatre and design.

As homage to the thousands of young people who have been walking through its doors since 1980, St Martins has featured the stories of 40 alumni on their social media through the 40:40 Online campaign.

Together the stories create a kaleidoscope of the creativity, culture and connection within the walls of the theatre.

Featured alumni include: television presenter Julia Zemiro, writer Michele Lee, comedian Tanya Lacy, director Petra Kalive, actor Robert Meldrum, along with stories from the current young people.

The year of celebration culminates in an online performance, 40:40 Live, at 4pm on December 12 that will feature more than 60 young people who have continued to perform, script and create during lockdown.

The work will include a combination of live and prerecorded segments that weave together stories of past alumni and present young people, highlighting connections through time and place.

A chorus of teens reimagine Lally Katz’s surprising adventure into theatre, a young person pays tribute to the start of Wesley Enoch’s career and a gaggle of eight-year-olds follow in Tariro Mavondo’s footsteps on the long weekly journey to the library where her love of storytelling began.

What’s On Fuse at Darebin ■ Darebin’s new multi-arts festival FUSE has continued to put the local arts scene at the forefront during spring 2020 and is now launching a new project entitled WurruWurru, where six local artists have been handpicked to create fresh and original music, poetry, dance and visual art.

The Wurru-Wurru project is designed to bring First Nations people together in traditional ways of ceremony, across a myriad of art, performance and storytelling.

Project curator Allara Briggs Pattison, a Yorta Yorta artist and creative entrepreneur, has selected six First Nations Artists to create new work inspired by the theme WurruWurru, which in Woiwurrung language means ‘Sacred Kingfisher’ and ‘sky’. Four new works have been in development over the past two months and audiences can tune into the FUSE website to listen and view the works until November 29.

Allara is herself a skilled musician, composer and film maker. Her Yorta Yorta culture inspires her work, and she strives to create space for cultural, revival reclamation and celebration. Together we manifest spiritual healing for Country and within ourselves.

“As a First Nations artist myself, I understand the impact the COVID-19 pandemic is having on a creative and cultural level.

Wurru-Wurru is a way our mob can connect, especially as most of us build our home here as guests on Wurundjeri Country. It gives an opportunity for First Nations Artists to create for Country through music, art and dance as our ancestors did. Even in isolation we continue to evolve our connections and tell our stories. We are resilient, we see the light, we feel the air and we watch the birds.

“I chose these artists because they all dedicate themselves to creating positive social change through their art. They have all shown incredible resilience throughout the past eight months of isolation. They have worked very hard to stay creative and connected to community and culture with severely diminished opportunities to create or share their work,” Allara says.

■ Performance artist, Hideto Ambiguous, takes on the challenge of unravelling how social media has become a manipulative tool that influences political agendas and the social conscience when it comes to migration and even war. The conceit is that his supposed hero, Shinzo, is both perpetrator and victim in the era of big data.

As a one-man show, the performance is more a polemic about these issues. Theatrically, Hideto’s characterisations are basic as are the simple attempts at mime to denote where he is and what he is doing. These elements are more the convenient means by which he can focus on the ideas which he wants to bring to the audience’s attention. It is almost childish in its minimalism.

The revelation of the piece comes at the latter end of the performance where we are taken back in time to see the rationale that contextualizes the events laid before us. Until that time there was no real drama to follow or character development both of which would have facilitated engagement. The events were disparate and fragmented – war, immigration, big data. Things seemed a little disconnected.

These ideas do connect eventually and it is through a clever plot inversion. The audience have had to wait, however, for this culmination. But Hideto’s agenda is to accentuate and provoke with his ideas rather than his performance skills.

■ In most countries, Remembrance Day is observed on November 11 to recall the end of First World War hostilities.

Member states of the Commonwealth of Nations adopted Remembrance Day, while the US chose Veterans Day. Remembrance Day was first observed in 1919 throughout the British Commonwealth.

It was originally called Armistice Day to commemorate the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11am - on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Every year on November 11, Australians pause in a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served, and continue to serve Australia during times of war, conflict and peace while the US chose Veterans Day.

■ Energy drinks are known for their high caffeine content, which often tops that of soda and even coffee. But they seem to affect people's hearts and blood pressure differently than other caffeinated beverages, suggests a small new study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association.

In the study, researchers divided 18 men and women into two groups. Half were given a 32-ounce commercially available energy drink with 320 mg of caffeine, as well as other ingredients like taurine and ginseng, both dietary supplements.

People in the other group were given a soda-like control drink of the same size that contained the same amount of caffeine with a bit of lime juice, cherry syrup and carbonated water.

After six days, the groups switched and drank the other beverage. The researchers measured everyone's blood pressure at the start of the study and one, two, four, six and 24 hours after drinking the beverage. They also measured everyone's heart activity using an electrocardiogram.

New date for Oscars ■ The 2020-2021 film awards season will be the most delayed and drawn-out season ever, with the Oscars pushed back from its usual late February date to April 25 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Most of the other awards shows have adjusted to fit the Oscars timeline, but that timeline is itself unusually extended there's a full month, for instance, between the announcement of Oscar nominations on March 15 and the beginning of final voting on April 15.

That's the opposite of the awards season that ended at the beginning of this year, when the Oscars' early Feb. 9 date caused a truncated, crammed calendar.

Mobile phones addictive ■ You check it in the bathroom. You check it at the movies. You check it when you're having dinner with your friends. But you wouldn't say you're addicted and most experts would agree with you.

"Only a small percentage of people qualify as addicted," says Dr David Greenfield, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of Connecticut and founder of the Centre for Internet and Technology Addiction.

"But many people overuse their smartphones." The line between overuse and addiction is grey. But Greenfield says you're moving into addiction territory when you can't stop using your phone even when it's harming your life. Whether you're in a work meeting or behind the wheel, "if you can't help being on it even when you know you shouldn't be, that loss of control is the hallmark of an addiction," he says.

Dr James Roberts is a professor of marketing at Baylor University and author of Too Much of a Good Thing, a book about smartphone addiction. He agrees with Greenfield's definition, and lists a few more warning signs. Withdrawal is a big one. If you feel anxious, irritable, or uncomfortable when your phone isn't within reach, that's a red flag, he says. And if you seem to be on your phone more and more, that ever-increasing desire for a "dose" of smartphone is akin to substance abusers who build up tolerance to drugs or alcohol, he says. If all this is making you roll your eyes, after all, what's the big deal about checking Facebook or sending a few texts? new research may make you reconsider.

But there's broader research that suggests constant access to the Internet may be rewiring our brains in potentially harmful ways. ■ Hundreds of thousands of Americans deferred routine cancer screenings at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic over fear of contracting the virus, leading to an uptick in advanced cancer diagnoses. Without early detection, patients are left with fewer treatment options and a higher likelihood of dying.

Earlier this year, the National Cancer Institute projected that missed cancer screenings and other behavioural fallout from the pandemic would result in at least 10,000 additional cancer-related deaths over the next decade.

"There's really almost no way that doesn't turn into increased mortality," its director said. National cancer-care provider 21st Century Oncology said it has recorded 18 percent of its breast-cancer patients as having an advanced stage of the disease, compared to 12 percent in 2019. Similarly, the medical testing company Quest Diagnostics showed its weekly number of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients decreased by nearly 52 percent in March and early April compared to pre-pandemic. "Cancer doesn't take a pause," said Harvey Kaufman, a company senior medical director.

■ Grocery store workers particularly those who interact with customers are at serious risk of infection by the coronavirus, according to a new study in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. These workers likely became a "significant transmission source" for the illness without even knowing it because most in the study were asymptomatic.

The study found that 20 percent of 104 grocery store workers tested at a Boston store in May had positive nasal swab results, according to the network. The analysis is the first to demonstrate the significant asymptomatic infection rate, exposure risks and psychological impact such workers have felt during the viral outbreak.

Kanye West gets votes ■ More details have been revealed about Kanye West's electoral efforts just hours after the rapper conceded defeat in the 2020 US presidential election.

According to the Associated Press, the 43-year-old only managed to rake in almost 60,000 votes in preliminary tallies from the 12 US states where he appeared on the ballot. In their findings, the majority of West's supporters came from Tennessee, where he garnered 10,188 votes, the most he received from any state in the US. The outlet reported that West also clocked up 6796 votes in Minnesota, 6259 votes in Kentucky, 5587 in Oklahoma, and 4837 in Louisiana.

West was running under the Birthday Party and was an official candidate in the aforementioned states as well as Idaho, Utah, Colorado, Iowa,Arkansas, Mississippi, West Virginia and Vermont.

West also voted for the first time and, of course, he tweeted about the event.

"God is so good," West wrote on Twitter. "Today I am voting for the first time in my life for the President of the United States, and it's for someone I truly trust ... me."

Magazine ■ Two of my favourite actors are Harrison Ford (whom I have met) and Burt Lancaster.

My first memory of seeing Burt Lancaster was in the 1955 film His Majesty O'Keefe.

I have studied the list of Burt Lancaster films and apart from The Crimson Pirate, I think he never made a comedy.

His films were mainly dramas and adventure films. I thought he was great and I wanted to grow up to be just like Burt Lancaster.

There was another of my lifetime goals that went off the rails, I guess in the end you grow up to be yourself.

Burton Stephen ‘Burt’ Lancaster was born in 1913 in New York City. He was one of five children. His father was a postman and his mother died when Burt was in High School.

He had a keen interest in gymnastics as a child and formed an acrobatic duo with his friend Nick Cravat.

In later years Burt made nine films with Nick.

The pair joined a local theatrical company and also developed circus skills.

An injury forced Burt to give up his acrobatic career and he drifted into several jobs before serving in the Second World War. In 1945 he auditioned for a Broadway play and got the role. Burt was spotted by producer Harold Hecht who introduced him to director Hal Wallis.

In 1946 Burt was cast in his first screen role in The Killers and starred opposite Ava Gardiner.

In 1953 he played Sgt Milton Warden in the classic, From Here To Eternity. His films included Sorry Wrong Number, The Rainmaker, Separate Tables, Gunfight At The O.K. Corral, Judgement In Nuremberg and The Birdman Of Alcatraz.

He made seven films with fellow actor Kirk Douglas. He was a close friend of Telly Savalas.

Burt formed a production company with Harold Hecht called Hecht - Lancaster, James Hill was a silent partner. The company produced films which included Apache, Vera Cruz, Trapeze, Sweet Smell Of Success and

Australian actor Michael Pate once told me he didn't get on with Burt, Michael felt he was opinionated and annoyed him by constantly quoting Plato on the set of Ten Tall Men. Burt was nominated for an Academy Award four times and won Best Actor for his role as the corrupt evangelist in Elmer Gantry in 1960.

Burt was one of the special guests at the 1977 Logie Awards in Melbourne and admired the work of Bert Newton.

Later that year Burt Lancaster rang Bert from the USA to wish him a happy birthday.

Burt Lancaster was married three times and had five children with his second wife Norma.

Burt suffered a stroke in 1991. He died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 80 after a long illness.

There was no funeral service - he was cremated and his ashes lie under a large oak tree in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

There is a small marker which simply reads - Burt Lancaster 1913 - 1994.

Extremely well made with sparkling 1950 period detail and costume design, "Fargo: Season 4" does not lack for drama, action, humour, pathos or suspense, and even though no season of "F argo" may quite reach the heights of the original source material or inspiration, it's amazingly close, an exceptional and almost otherworldly anthology series brimming with a group of a delightful entertaining all new idiosyncratic characters that make this new instalment pretty much as good as it gets.

Based on the book "Shirley" by Susan Scarf Merrell, a more general biographical look in the life of Shirley Jackson may have been more forthcoming, however, this fictionalized slice of life from the legendary and enigmatic author unfolds like a psychological drama from the pages of one of her own books as lives are turned upside down and inside out with great bite, overwhelming cynicism and devilish relish, an off centre, non-conventional and enthralling biopic that succeeds, for the most part, as a character driven study brimming with cracking dialogue and standout performances.

Visually striking, with superb 1950's period detail, Elisabeth Moss (The Invisible Man/The Handmaids Tale) plays Shirley Jackson like a smouldering stick of dynamite about to explode, an intensely spellbinding performance as the complex and constantly psychologically troubled author, and is matched word-for-word, scene-for-scene by Michael Stuhlbarg as the sharp tongued husband, along with Odessa Young and Logan Lerman as the young couple in their grasp, all ultimately revealing, a bitter cocktail that is intellectually stimulating and provocative.

Those expecting a gentle, lighthearted children's film similar to Disney's classic 1940 animated feature may be in for a shock with this new incarnation, but those wanting imaginative cinema with something substantial at its core, will be richly rewarded.

The basic story is the same; poor woodcarver Geppetto (nicely played by Roberto Benigni) creates a wooden boy named Pinocchio, who magically comes to life, and subsequently goes on a number of adventures, some of which prove treacherous.

However, co-writer/director Matteo Garrone (Gomorrah, Dogman, Reality) has gone back to the original novel by Carlo Collodi, which was more of a Grimms fairy tale, so the bleaker aspects return, with incidents and confrontations proving a threat to Pinocchio both physically and morally. Garrone, whose films regularly examined both the flaws of people and the problematic social/justice structures they have to live under, fills the famous tale with similar layers, using various escapades and events to explore themes such as poverty, ineffectual government bureaucracy, exploitation of the vulnerable, and a lack of opportunity for the poor which leads to undesirable outcomes.

Garrone deftly mixes the magical with the satirical, and with the help of an outstanding technical crew, gives the film such an exquisitely golden hue, astutely making the darker elements which swim underneath that fairytale imagery all the more effective.

The effects, whether practical or computer-animated, are firstrate.

The cast are uniformly terrific, with faces that wouldn't seem outof-place in a Fellini film.

The two hour running time is filled both with care and conviction.

Those who remember Benigni's own disastrous adaptation in 2002, and feel hesitant to approach another variation with him involved, can be rest-assured that this is infinitely superior in every way imaginable.

With yet another adaptation due out next year (from Guillermo del Toro, who will also hark back to the darker nature of Collodi's novel), it looks like there will always be interest in this famous wooden creation.

Garrone's Pinocchio is definitely one of the best imaginings of the tale to date.

A terrific performance from Mel Gibson helps keep Fatman mildly enjoyable, despite the film-makers infuriatingly not being able to make the most of a uniquely deranged premise.

Gibson plays Santa Claus (although people refer to him by his Kris Kringle moniker), whose giftgiving business is falling on hard times.

Claus receives subsidies from the Federal Government, but that support hinges on the amount of presents he hands out, which in turn hopefully inspires each family to go out and spend big on Christmas frivolities.

Lately, Kris has been handing out pieces of coal, as he believes the young populace are becoming more dark-hearted and self-centred.

With this funding threatened to be taken away by the powers-thatbe, Kris has no option but to agree to sign up for a government contract, where his toy factory and its diminutive staff will be used to manufacture military hardware.

More complications ensue when monstrous rich kid Billy (Chance Hurstfield) hires equally bitter assassin Skinny Man (a tiresomely typecast Walton Goggins) to kill Santa, after receiving a lump of coal on Christmas morning.

Trying to help Kris through this tough period is his wife Ruth (Marianne Jean-Baptiste).

As one can see, this is a crazy plot that had infinite possibilities, and could have been a darkly comedic, sharply observed examination of the world we currently live in (Billy comes across like a Donald Trump in-the-making), but writer/ directors Eshom and Ian Nelms (Small Town Crime) fail to successfully tap into the material's exciting potential, and the more the film fails to hit the bullseye, the more frustrating the viewing experience becomes.

Apart from Gibson's excellent turn as a growingly disillusioned Santa, there is also good work from Baptiste, who offers a nicely optimistic counterbalance to her gruff partner, and the chemistry between the two is quite affecting and believable.

Fatman, if brought to satisfying fruition, could have become a genuine cult classic, but instead takes a one-of-a-kind story and largely wastes it, with Gibson's strong central performance only confirming what a missed opportunity this truly is.

The light hearted country track Blame It On The Beer conjures up a feeling of those 90s classic country favourites from across the pond and has been well worth the wait, says Chris.

■ John Rozentals reports that Zonte's Footstep, Henschke and Serafino Wines were awarded trophies at the Winepilot Grenache Shootout.

Zonte's Footstep Love Symbol Grenache 2019 has been named the The Grenache Shootout Wine of the Show and Grenache of the Show at the inaugural 2020 Grenache Shootout.

Some 52 Grenache and Grenache-dominant blends were selected to compete in a search for the best Australian Grenache, with a specific focus by the judges on consumer appeal.

Trophies were also awarded to the Henschke Johann's Garden 2017 for Best Blend of Show and Serafino Wines Family Vineyards GSM 2019 for Best Value Grenache of Show.

Wines were judged blind in three rounds with the top 12 wines from the First Round moving into the Semi-Final.

The top 4 wines from the SemiFinal were then judged head-tohead in a Grand Final.

Other Grand Finalists included Bondar Wines Rayner Vineyard Grenache 2019 and Hentley Farm The Stray Mongrel 2019.

Eight gold medals, 10 silver medals and 24 bronze medals were awarded, a higher rate than usual due to all entries being handpicked by the Winepilot team.

WINE OF THE WEEK Robert Mondavi 2018 Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Chardonnay ($25): This dry white is golden straw in colour and opens with aromas of pineapples, with hints of vanilla. It is rich, creamy, and concentrated with toasty oak leading to a balanced acidity and lingering finish.

Enjoy with grilled fish with lemony butter, roasted pork tenderloin or garden salad. Or sip the wine on its own as an aperitif.

Jockeys unhappy about huge fines ■ A number of jockeys and the Victorian Jockey's Association are not happy with the number of heavy fines that have been handed out to jockeys over the overuse of the whip, especially over the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

While breaches don't look good, some riders have been hit deeply in the pocket.

Kerrin McEvoy, a winner of threeMelbourne Cups, was on the highly fancied international, Tiger Moth, in the Melbourne Cup. He had to worry about getting the horse across from 23 in the Cup, but unfortunately in his attempt to win the coveted event, used the whip too many times over the concluding stages in an attempt to get the horse home.

It cost him a $50,000 fine for over use of the whip, but he appealed to the Racing Tribunal.

They thought it was very unfair, and reduced it to $ 30,000. Still a decent whack.

By finishing second in the Cup, his percentage of the stakemoney was $55,000, leaving him originally, with a lonely $5000 to take home.

Former young Western Australian rider, Fred Kersley, copped a $10,000 penalty of his $18,000 percentage, for too much whip movement on Hit the Spot in the Victoria Derby.

It's hard enough, even in a Maiden Event, not too get too excited in the concluding stages, and they are doing their best for the connections to win the race.

But as the old saying goes "Rules are Rules".

The tipping point is at a high at present, when those outside racing, can't reconcile industry claims of prioritising equine care, with the sight of whipped horses.

I don't how many times that jockeys are abused for doing same, but most of the time they are simply waving the whip across the horse to get his or hers mind on the job.

A lot of jockeys will tell you a lot of horses don't want to put in, unless they use a bit more power to get their mind on the job, always in their minds, they don't want to hurt the horse in any way.

Tracking right way ■ Track managers from time to time have come under fire, for having either the tracks to hard or too soft, but this time over the Carnivals they got it spot on.

We all know track management is a challenge at the best of times, let alone when the carnivals come up.

Melbourne's fickle change of weather doesn't help whatsoever.

The Track manager at Flemington, Liam O'Keefe, under the VRC banner, went down that path over the week long Melbourne Cup Carnival.

He and his team did a magnificent job over the four days.

Martin Synan, who looks after the track at Moonee Valley for races like the Cox Plate, and the Manikato the night before, did a great job with his team.

Over the days of their Carnivals they were hot with strong winds, rain and then warmth.

We live in Victoria we all know what it's like, the old four season's in one day.

Farewell Leo ■ Sorry to see the Herald Sun's Racing Chief, Leo Schlink, leaving for distant shores.

A very popular man in the Press room, Leo, was not only a top journalist in the Sport of Kings field, but excelled in other sports.

He covered many of the world's leading Tennis Tournaments, and did it with style.

He had been with the Herald Sun since 1997, and finished up with the News Corp, on the final day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Schlink, besides his talents in the racing and tennis fields, won the 2018 Walkley Award for Sports Journalism for his outstanding coverage of the Aquanita doping scandal.

He went out with a bang at Flemington on the final day, not only for his outstanding journalism, but being a part-owner of the good mare,

■ This year's Jericho Cup will again reward owners and trainers who have targeted the race by providing prizemoney to every horse which makes the final field of 14.

The winner of the Jericho Cup will receive a cheque for $ 150,000, with the runner-up, taking home $50,000 and $30,000 going to the connections of the third placed horse.

Nominations for the Cup closed yesterday.

Should there be sufficient horses balloted from the Cup, a consolation race over 4065 metres, will also be held at the meeting.

The Jericho Cup commemorates the race which was originally conducted in 1918, on the eve of a major offensive by theAustralian Light Horse Brigade against the Turkish Empire.

The inaugural Jericho Cup was won by "Bill the Bastard", arguably Australia's greatest war horse.

The Cup last year was won by the Ciaron Maher-David Eustace trained Ablaze, who would subsequently return to Warrnambool to claim the Grand Annual Steeplechase over 5500 metres.

Compact meeting at Horsham ■ The progressive Horsham Club opened another big week with a compact meeting and Moyreisk (Avoca) co-trainers Barry and Ashley Ainsworth's 5Y0 Ready Cash-Heavens Above gelding Namoscar produced a career best performance to land the Speeding Spur@Woodlands Stud Trotters Mobile over 2200 metres.

Driven by Ashley, Namoscar starting from the extreme draw spent most of the race at the rear of the field as David Murphy's Meet Michelangelo lead from gate five.

Still a "mile" off the front runners hitting the back straight on the final occasion, Namoscar produced a dynamic burst of speed in the approach to the home turn and despite making the final bend six wide, finished at 100 miles an hour and careered away on turning to down the pacemaker by 12.7 metres in a mile rate of 201.6. Double Helix (one/two) was third two metres back.

■ Popular Meltonian Ken Tippet trained and reined 4Y0 All Speed Hanover-Universal Alice mare Bellasteel to success in the 1700 metre Vincent @ Alabar Pace.

Trapped in the open from gate four, Bellasteel gained cover shortly after the start when Jilliby Dingo went forward from outside the front line to race uncovered. Easing three wide on the home turn, Bellasteel ran home best to prevail by 1.7 metres over the leader Spunky Thoughtz on debut, with Gilded third 1.6 metres back after using the sprint lane to no avail. The mile rate 1-58.3.

■ Veteran Charlton trainer Mark Boyle was victorious with 5Y0 Western Terror-Prestigious Stride mare Bruised Ego who greeted the judge in The Storm Inside @ Alabar Pace over 2200 metres.

Driven by leading reinsman Greg Sugars, Bruised Ego from the extreme draw settled midfield in the moving line, before going forward in the last lap. Although four wide on the home turn, Bruised Ego ran on strongly to defeat the ever reliable Gracie Cullen (one/one - three wide home turn) by 1.5 metres in a 1-59 mile rate.

Creative Lad was a game third 3 metres back after racing exposed.

Half-head victory ■ After an absence of several months, The Trots returned to Swan Hill last Wednesday with a entertaining eight event fixture.

The honor of winning the first race - the Welcome Back To Swan Hill 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 1750 metres went to Bendigo duo Marong based trainer Shaun McNaulty and reinsman Rodney Lakey when Pet Rock-Shesasign gelding Pacific Rock scored in a mile rate of 1-57.4.

Enjoying a sweet trip from gate two trailing the leader Lorimermajor (gate three), Pacific Rock was sooled along the sprint lane to prevail by a half head in a thrilling finish, Jukebax Jet (one/fore - four wide home turn) was third 2.6 metres back.

■ The ToshibaAir Conditioning Pace over 1750 metres saw Rod Lakey bring up a driving double after scoring aboard the Allan (Pud) McDonald (Irymple) trained Calgary Bay at tote odds of $30.30 or $41.80 fixed. Raced by Mary and Ian Campbell and Charli Masotti, Calgary Bay, a 4Y0 daughter of Major Bronski and Abigail Hall enjoyed a sweet passage from the pole trailing Outside Fighter which crossed her from gate two shortly after the start leaving Attention Seeking (gate seven) posted.

Easing away from the inside on the final bend, Calgary Bay finished her race off well to blouse Attention Seeking by a head in a slick 1-55.9.

Pembrook Charlie (three back the markers) used the sprint lane for third 1.8 metres back.

Time to cruise ■ It was New Zealand Cup Day on Tuesday and once again Purdon power prevailed, with the All Stars stable claiming the trifecta in the $540,400 feature over 3200 metres with Bettors Delight-Star Of Venus gelding Self Assured.

Driven by Mark Purdon, Self Assured stepped cleanly from out wide in an unfortunate reckless start to cross stablemate Ashley Locaz before handing over to another stablemate Spankem (Natalia Rasmussen) entering the straight on the first occasion.

Cruising for most of the trip, Self Assured used the sprint lane to gain the day by 3 ½ lengths from Spankem, with Ashley Locaz also using the sprint lane from three back for third a half head away. Giving the race an Australian flavor, Self Assured is raced by Victorian Jean Feiss who unfortunately couldn't be there due to Covit19 conditions. The mile rate 1-58.2.

Speed slackened ■ Geelong raced on Wednesday and Ross Creek trainer Noel Hill snared the Jack Rabbit Winery Pace over 2100 metres with 8Y0 Safari-Podium Princess gelding Chief Safari who chalked up his 15th success in 113 race appearances.

Bred by Noel and raced by the Hill family, Chief Safari driven by Western District reinsman Xavier O'Connor pushed through from gate two on the second line to settle three back in the running line, before going forward with a run when the speed slackened to race clear at the bell.

Kept going in the last lap, Chief Safari defied all challengers to record a 3.1 metre margin from Shady Dancer which raced exposed, with rank outsider Imagoldcloud third along the sprint lane after leading out, then trailing the winner third 1.5 metres back. The mile rate 1-58.9.

■ Bolinda's Lisa Miles scored a huge victory with Villacci, a 4Y0 gelded son of Modern Art and Village Glow raced by Terry and Mick Lingard in the Flying Brick Cider In Cans Pace over 2100 metres. Given a sweet trip from gate five three back in the moving line, Villacci was eased three wide in the back straight on the final occasion and despite covering plenty of extra ground, raced clear on turning to score a most impressive 3.3 metre margin in 1-57.6 from the favourite Yankee Gold which followed him home. Radius which raced uncovered was third a half head away.

At Maryborough ■ A wonderful days racing was held at Maryborough on Thursday featuring Breeders Crown heats for the two and three year old Trotters over 2190 metres.

Redwood winner Mexicana, a 2Y0 Muscle Mass-Pocaro filly trained by Josh Dickie and driven by Anthony Butt was successful in the 2nd Fillies heat, leading for most of the trip to nose out Aldebaran Ursula along the sprint lane in 2-02.1. Lucky Charm (one/two) was third 7.4 metres away.

■ Three year old Peak Dnk-Merckk colt Gimondi outstayed his rivals to land the 2nd C & G Heat. Driven by Greg Sugars for NSW trainer Blake Fitzpatrick, Gimondi raced exposed outside the leader and favourite Elite Stride from the bell to register a head decision in 200.7, with Red White And Bloom (one/one) last lap third 11.2 metres back.

■ Tough ex-South Australian colt Powderkeg (Muscle Hill-Sparks Ignite) was too strong for his rivals in the 3rd C & G Heat. Trained and driven by Lisa Miles, Powderkeg was sent forward from gate six to cross and lead with the result never in doubt, scoring by 6.4 metres in advance of Rules Don't Apply (three back the markers - outside the winner home turn) and Cracker Jet which battled on strongly after racing in the open most of the way to be 2.3 metres away. The mile rate 2-00.6.

■ Avenel trainer/driver Juanita Breen's Sky Valley-Golden Wahine filly Golden Sunset was superb in winning the 1st 3Y0 Fillies Heat. Going forward from four back in the moving line mid-race to park in the open outside the polemarker and hot favourite Queen Of Crime, Golden Sunset was driven with agression the last lap as the pair cleared out going head and head, with Golden Sunset too tough at the finish, scoring by four metres in 1-59.4. Araignee Fair (one/four - three wide last lap was third six metres back.

Stepped cleanly ■ Shepparton raced on Thursday evening and Merrigum Breeder/owner/trainer Brad Aylett's smart 4Y0 Yankee Spider-El Twotter gelding Barhoon was an easy victor of the Your Sold Real Estate Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

Stepping cleanly from barrier four to trail Levina which pinged away inside him, Barhoon driven by local reinswoman Bec Bartley enjoyed a sweet passage before sailing home along the sprint lane to record a runaway 10.2 metre margin from Caprioska (three back the markers) which flashed home when extricated into the clear on turning, with Levina a head back third.

The mile rate 2-05.3.

Cosy trip ■ At Kilmore on Friday, Cardigan co-trainers Anton Golino and Jack MacKinnon landed the MC Traffic Trotters Mobile with Swedish bred Love You-Saorse 10Y0 stallion Dreamcatcher.

With Jason Lee in the sulky, Dreamcatcher trailed the leader Majestic Mannequin (gate 4) from the pole and after a cosy trip, sailed home along the sprint lane to prevail by 1.9 metres over the pacemaker in a rate of 2-03.3.

Mayor wins 7-way contest in Darebin

■ CR SUSAN RENNIE has been returned to Darebin Council after polling 35.5 per cent of votes in a seven-way contest in the South-Central Ward.

Cr Rennie required preferences to win.

Some familiar names will join Cr Rennie at the Darebin City Council table.

Lina Messina won the Central Ward seat, in results announced on Monday by the Victorian Electoral Commission.

Julie Williams was the victor in an eight-wat battle for the North-Central Ward.

Tim Laurence fought off opposition from seven competitors for the North-East Ward.

Gaetano Greco was declared winner of the North-West Ward seat. Emily Dimitriadis will represent the South-East. Tom Hannan, Trent McCarthy and Susanne Newton were also elected.

Brimbank’s top Councillor gains only 10.7% vote

Ms Papafotiou received just 10.7 per cent of the popular vote in the Taylors Ward election contested by 17 candidates.

The successful Ward candidates were Ranka Rasic, Bruce Lancashire and Maria Kerr.

■ The Yarra Ranges hopes to benefit from a multi-million-dollar campaign to back our local tourism industry – and the thousands of jobs it supports.

The Stay Close, Go Further campaign will promote Victoria across multiple platforms – television, print, radio, digital and social – as the state prepares further eases restrictions.

Victorians can now travel between regional Victoria and Melbourne, while accommodation will open across the state for holidays.

As part of the campaign, advertisements will run across the state, highlighting the creativity, culture and unique offering of Victoria and its people.

The campaign showcases Victorian makers and creators in some of the regions hit hardest by the summer bushfires and global pandemic, including Gippsland and the High Country. Other locations, including the Great Ocean Road and the Grampians, will be featured in coming weeks.

Visit Victoria is working with regional tourism boards across the state to help spread the message and encourage more Victorians to explore their own backyard.

The new initiative complements Click for Vic, which encourages Victorians to buy local and support Victorian businesses and jobs. The campaign, supported by an $8.5 million boost by the Victorian Government in September, has helped many businesses stay afloat and prepare to welcome visitors again.

More than 70 per cent of people surveyed

by Visit Victoria said the Click for Vic campaign made them look forward to visiting regional Victoria and Melbourne once it was safe to do so.

Last year the domestic overnight intrastate market was worth $9 billion, larger than both interstate overnight and international overnight markets.

The Stay Close, Go Further campaignwill encourage more Victorians to experience everything our state has to offer, as our visitor economy makes steady steps towards recovery.

■ Greater Dandenong Highway Patrol officers intercepted the driver of a Holden HG Kingswood on Thompsons Rd, Lyndhurst, alleging that he was travelling at 160-kmh in a 90-kmh zone.

Victoria Police says the 31-year-old Berwick driver allegedly claimed he was “baited” by another car, prompting him to engage in a drag race.

The car is set to be impounded for a month at a cost of $1038.

Police expect to charge the man with speeding offences, and for hm to front a Magistrates’ Court at a later date.

■ Casey Crime Investigation Unit detectives are seeking assistance from the public to help identify suspects for an armed robbery in Endeavour Hills earlier this year.

Investigators were told three men approached the two teenage victims on Hallam North Rod near Thomas Mitchell Drive on Sunday, September 27, about 6.45pm.

It is believed the men spoke to the victims while one man produced a hammer and demanded the victims’ hand over a Bluetooth speaker and a bike. The victims handed over the speaker and the men fled on foot on Thomas Mitchell Drive. The victims were not physically injured during the incident.
