■ Local government areas in eastern and south-east Melbourne, representing two million residents, have joined to call for urgent action to end homelessness.

The Councils yesterday (Tues.) formed a collective to press for more social housing for the region’s most vulnerable community members.

The local councils are Casey, Cardinia, Frankston, Greater Dandenong, Knox, Kingston, Manningham, Monash, Maroondah, Mornington Peninsula, Whitehorse, Yarra Ranges, plus Bayside.

“A safe home is fundamental for recovery and safety,” said Cr Stuart James, Mayor of Monash.

“Everyone deserves to have a roof over their head, a door they can lock and a place where they feel secure and safe. A place to call home. This is a fundamental and basic right.”

The councils say that homelessness is more likely to affect those most vulnerable including women and children fleeing family violence, people with a disability, people living with a mental health condition, people living in poverty, and marginalised groups.

The councils intend to work with State and Federal Governments.

Clayton S. drug bust ■ Police arrested and charged a woman on Friday following the seizure of a number of cannabis plants in Clayton South.

As part of an ongoing drug investigation investigators executed a search warrant in Orloff Close uncovering an alleged cannabis hydroponic set-up about 12.30pm.

More than 90 cannabis plants were seized along with an amount of alleged dried cannabis with a street value over $120,000.

The 22-year-old Vietnamese national was charged with traffick and cultivate a commercial amount of cannabis and theft of electricity.

The woman was set to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court for a remand application this on Friday evening.

Letter to the Editor Stop 2020 elections Sir, For the past several months I have received Boroondara Council newsletters delivered to my letterbox.

Whilst the newsletter contains little that is of interest on council affairs, it repeats the name of the local ward councillor over and over again, accompanied by many pictures of the councillor.

The most recent one, received last week contained three such pictures. These newsletters are all paid for from Boroondara Council revenue.

It matters more than ever that local government election candidates are able to make contact with electors through public meetings, door knocking and letterbox drops.

But these are all banned in the Stage 4 lockdown, except letterbox drops, and then only if the delivery is undertaken by post or courier. That is, paid for by the candidate.

In Boroondara, we regularly receive such material which, in effect, supports sitting councillors - and is paid for by ratepayers.

In confirming the election date, October 24 , the Minister for Local Government, Shaun Leane, said he had taken the advice of the Chief Medical Officer.

Whilst Professor Sutton's public health advice may be impeccable he is not the obvious source of advice on democratic practice.

In this, we have been failed miserably by the Minister and the Victorian government. The elections should be held only when fair competition between all candidates can be assured.

■ A further allocation of a provisional $1 million for further COVID-19 emergency relief and response, was due to be considered

by Whittlesea Council Administrators yesterday (Tues.), as this edition went to press.

The Administrators had an agenda item of how to deal with a $19.455 million cash surplus from the 2019-20 financial year. Some of the funds were from Government grants.

Rates decrease ● Paul Hamer, Box Hill MLA are part of 27 to benefit from a share in more than $68 million from the stimulus program.

This investment recognises the overwhelming demand for shovelready community sports infrastructure.

It is part of the Victorian Government's $2.7 billion Building Works package creating jobs and kick-starting vital projects across the state.

Locally, the project will deliver new and improved smart LED lighting solutions at all three locations, making it safer for our local sporting communities.

The facility will provide a perfect base for local clubs - in particular the Box Hill Rugby Union Club and the Box Hill United Soccer Club - to develop programs, train, host games and events, Mr Hamer said.

“This investment is about helping grassroots sports communities get back in the game when the time is right.

“From sports field lighting upgrades at multiple sites to new indoor sports courts, investments like these provide high-quality and accessible places for Victorians to reap the benefits of sport and active recreation participation.

“By working with local government authorities, alpine resort boards and sporting clubs and organisations, the program is fasttracking shovel-ready community sports infrastructure projects across Victoria and is expected to create almost $140 million in local economic activity.

“This includes jobs in construction and supply chains with benefits for local businesses through the Victorian Government's Local Jobs First requirements which will be built into contracts.

“The program is part of the more than $915 million in Victorian Government investment in community sport and recreation infrastructure since 2014.

■ Hobsons Bay Council says there will be effective rate decreases in 2020-21 because of special measures taken by Councillors. There will be a decrease by 0.17 per cent for residential properties, 0.31 per cent for vacant residential properties, 1.91 per cent for commercial properties, and 0.02 per cent for industrial properties.

Acrid emissions

■ Cr Peter Lockwood, at last week’s Knox Council meeting, spoke of a community letter submitted from 18 residents regarding emissions from Holloway Drive Bayswater in an industrial premises.

He asked Council officers to consider this matter as it is being reported that smoke and acrid emissions blow into nearby residential premises for several hours each day.

Plan for Coldstream

■ Yarra Ranges Council last week considered the latest stage of a local planning policy for Coldstream.

Proposals include zezoning of commercial land on the north side of the intersection of Maroondah Hwy and Station St, and rezoning of vacant land at 638-640 Maroondah Hwy.

Youth Council

■ Mitychell Youth Council was sworn in at the Shire meeting held on August 17. Mayor Cr David Lowe facilitated 11Youth Councillors taking the oath of office. Following the call for nominations for the offices, Cr Lowe, declared Thomas Starkey elected as Youth Mayor, Courtney Abela elected as Youth Deputy Mayor and Trinity Marshall as Secretary.

Fatality at Vermont

● Murray Lovass Police are appealing for public as sistance to help locate missing teen ager Murray Lovass. The 17-yearold was last seen at his Surrey Hills home about 1.30pm on Friday (Aug. 28). Police have concerns for Murray’s welfare due to his age and his disappearance is out of character. Murray is described as 183cm tall, with a thin build and short brown hair.

He was last seen riding his black Giant hybrid bicycle while wearing a black hoodie, grey tracksuit pants and white sneakers.

Manningham Council believes that it must offer two $150 to induce residents to contribute to the planning of tghe four yearly Council Plan and Healthy City Strategy that will be introduced mid2021 .

Boroondara Council achieved a full year operating surplus of $12.26 million which is $669,000 above the September Amended Budget of $11.59 million. Last week’s Council meeting was told that the overall financial position at June 30 was “satisfactory with a working capital ratio of 2.72 to 1 (includes reserve funds of $18.70 million and 0.5 per cent cash ontingency for emergency response works).

Liberal Democrats MPs David Limbrick says the use of police drones to detect stage 4 restriction breaches in Melbourne is excessive and is an invasion of privacy. The Victoria Police drones will be used to monitor public spaces such as skate parks, beaches, and parks. The drones can be flown up to 7km away from the operator and can read numberplates from 500m away. Mr Limbrick is concerned that there is no social licence for using these drones and will only increase public suspicion and paranoia of the police.

Ringwood East boy Tevita Fifita has been recognised as a FAST Hero for Stroke Foundation’s National Stroke Week. Tevita’s mother, Meliame, suffered a stroke in 2016. Tevita, then 11, raced into his mother’s room and knew to call triple zero straight away, saving his mother’s life.

■ Police responded to a fatal collision involving a pedestrian in Vermont on Thursday morning (Aug. 27).

It is believed a male pedestrian was struck by a black station wagon travelling east along Canterbury Rd about 2.30am.

The pedestrian died at the scene.

The driver of the car, a 59-year-old Glen Waverley man, stopped at the scene and alerted emergency services.

He is assisting Police with enquiries.

Nunawading Highway Patrol will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

TPG advised that it has suspended all roll outs for telecommunications infrastructure in Boroondara pending a review of all proposed sites in the municpality.

■ Payment assistance measures for those experiencing financial hardship as a result of COVID-19 have been extended, to provide continued relief for households and businesses in Knox. Interest will not be charged on overdue fees and charges - including rates - until March 2021, a six-month extension on the original end date. New allowances for zero-payment plans, extended payment plans for rates and deferral of debt collection on overdue rates and charges have also been introduced to provide further relief.

Maroondah Mail Meals on Wheels

■ Maroondah Council last week recognised the importance of its many volunteers for its Delivered Meals service as part of National Meals on Wheels Day, which is celebrated annually on the last Wednesday in August.

Monash cat curfew in 2021 ■ A night time cat curfew will be introduced in Monash next year with a survey revealing majority community support for the plan.

The survey attracted 680 responses with 75 per cent of respondents supporting a curfew for cats.

All registered cat owners received a letter inviting them to take part in the online survey.

Monash Council also invited Friends of Damper Creek, Friends of Scotchmans Creek, the RSPCA and the South Oakleigh Wildlife Shelter to respond.

The curfew, which will be between sunset or 7pm (whichever is the latter) and sunrise, was originally set to be introduced at the end of 2020.

Monash Council decided to hold off introduction of a cat curfew until April 2021, when pet registrations are due.

Water contamination risk ■ Residents throughout the North, North-West and East of Melbourne were warned of a water contamination risk late last week.

Yarra Valley Water issued a warning on Friday (Aug. 28) for residents in affected areas to boil their drinking water.

This followed Thursday night’s storms and damage to a chlorinator. Yarra Water was working with Melbourne Water which operates the Silvan Dam. Upgrades for Wantrina ■ Football and soccer players at Milpera Reserve in Wantirna will enjoy more opportunities to train and play year-round with upgrades to the fields and installation of new lighting.

An $850,000 upgrade project is nearing completion at the reserve, with the field levelled and new drainage and irrigation systems installed, and turf to be established throughout the warmer spring months.

Knox Council also received a $125,000 grant from the Victorian Government’s World Game Facilities Fund for the lighting upgrade, which will be matched by Council to fund the installation.

High satisfaction ■ Monash Council has recorded an excellent result of 75 for overall satisfaction in the Community Satisfaction Survey of more than 800 residents. This is the highest ever score recorded by Monash Council.

Street numbering ■ Boroondara City Council is rolling over its Street Numbering Local Law to enforce the display of allocated legal street numbers on properties. The first such law was adopted in 2010.

One submitter has expressed the view that due to COVID-19 restrictions it is not possible for the community to be fully engaged in the proposal to make thelaw and suggested Council extend the existing Local Law to at least early December but preferably to February 2021. That was not possible.

The laws relating to uniform numbering of properties throughout the municipality will proceed.

Standing up for abuse victims ■ Knox City Council has taken a firm stand in support of those who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse, by restricting access to Council funding and support for organisations that do not participate in the National Redress Scheme.

In a unanimous vote, Knox Councillors resolved that any organisation named by the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse and not participating in the Scheme will be ineligible for Council grants and funding, as well as ineligible to access Council facilities, participate in community events or receive permit to distribute information on Council property.

Knox Mayor Cr Nicole Seymour said the decision was an important, actionable step Council could make to show its support for the Scheme, and for those who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse.

“Every person in our community has the right to feel safe, secure and respected. The Royal Commission showed that this basic standard has not been upheld in many groups and institutions, and that abuse continues to impact people’s lives and livelihoods to this day,” said Cr Seymour.

Through the Scheme, people who have experienced institutional child sexual abuse can apply for redress and access other support services.

Casting vote needed ■ The casting vote of Whitehorse City’s Mayor, Cr Sharon Ellis, was needed last week on a motion to spend more than $3.9 million on a car park at the Council offices at Nunawading.

The Council is entering a formal contract for the construction of an Open Double Storey Car Park at the Whitehorse Civic Centre Precinct received from Building Engineering Pty Ltd of 125 Hawke St , West Melbourne.

The contract amount is $3,983,406.90 including GST. A number of votes were needed before the final motion was adopted.

Voting for the project were Crs Carr, Ellis, Massoud, Munroe and Stennett.

Against were Crs Barker, Bennett, Cutts, Davenport and Liu. The motion was carried on the casting vote of the Mayor.

Sports grants on offer ■ Sporting clubs from across Victoria are being urged to apply for funding to boost their equipment, skills and administration expertise.

Ros Spence, Minister for Community Sport, announced that applications are now open for the latest round of the Victorian Government’s 2020-21 Sporting Club Grants Program.

The grants provide clubs with up to $1000 for new uniforms and equipment, up to $5000 for the training of coaches, officials and volunteers and up to $5000 to improve club operational effectiveness.

The funding will help people of all ages and abilities take part in grassroots sport, no matter where they live and is a great boost for clubs during the coronavirus pandemic.

“Restrictions have had a heavy impact on participation in community sport but that hasn’t stopped the people behind our clubs from continuing to work for their communities,” Ms Spence said.

“In June we embarked on what was to be our last IVF round. Mainly because we just weren’t getting any eggs and I was putting my body through hell and was told it’s time to look at another avenue,” Christie told her online friends.

Meet Dexter Bourke ■ From 1957 as the self-appointed "school clown" and performing in school shows, to today as a theatre actor and director, theatre has played an important part in Dexter Bourke's life.

Dexter's parents felt that his personality demanded a more positive outlet after he distracted the school class and "lost focus", so they contacted the Northcote Dramatic Society where Dexter could “legitimise” his attention-seeking behaviour.

Once bitten by positive recognition, Dexter knew where he belonged.

Dexter found acting fun, but says he never really felt comfortable learning lines and "fitting" into a script.

"It took me way too long to realise that as much as I enjoyed being on stage, I really wasn't that good,” says Dexter frankly.

Then he tried his hand at directing a one-act play titled Last Things and it won Best Production at Ararat. In Dexter's words, he was now "in".

Since then, Dexter says he has continued to be blessed by accommodating theatre companies, wonderful scripts, and talented actors and crews.

"Consequently I have been very fortunate to have acquired an array of significant awards over the years", says Dexter. "Thankfully I do not take on a script with a view to it winning an award."

Dexter says he considers one of his most rewarding shows to be directing Samuel Beckett's Endgame for The 1812 Theatre's youth group, Centrestage, in Upper Ferntree Gully.

"The thought of directing Beckett was always going to be an immense challenge, but it worked beautifully. The young actors not only played their roles with aplomb, but they understood what they were doing."

Car Show goes viral ● Heidi Victoria ■ Heidi Victoria is well known as a former State Arts Minister, as well as a 3AW commentator, particularly on the Sunday Morning program hosted by Darren James and Nick McCallum.

What we did not know is that Ms Victoria suffered a stroke earlier this year. She revealed this in a Facebook post on Monday, as she set about raising money for the Stroke Foundation.

“I'm one of the very lucky ones. I've recovered fully, but it's taken a little while,” Heidi sai.d “It's really important that we all find out more about how strokes occur, and what to do if one does.

“Having suffered a stroke in March of this year, this is a personal quest for me.”

■ Novels that are inspired by true-life stories are always fascinating, and author Roxane Dhand has just written a cracking yarn, based in 17th century South Africa and the Netherlands.

In 1683 it's a tough life for young women in Amsterdam's civic orphanage, where our protagonist Johanna Timmerman, is forbidden to develop a relationship with Frans, an orphan in the boys' section.

Suddenly, Frans is sent across the world to the Dutch East India Company's developing colony at Good Hope in South Africa, and Johanna decides she must find him.

Meanwhile, Floriane Peronneau lives a privileged life but suffers from being married to a womanizing degenerate who has led them to the edge of ruin.

Floriane's and Johanna's stories become integrated when Johanna meets Floriane on the ship to South Africa and a firm friendship develops between the two women.

According to Dhand's research, girls like Johanna were called marriage maids, and were recruited from orphanages in the Netherlands, then sent to The Cape of Good Hope to marry wealthy landowners, Dhand says that Johanna was inspired

by Catharina Ras, a woman who pioneered women's land ownership in the Cape colony.

"On holiday in South Africa I was dining at a lovely restaurant, then named Catharina's on the Steenberg wine estate, named after Catharina Ras, the estate's first owner. Her fascinating story was printed on the back of the menu, and as I read it, I saw the earliest outline of my character Johanna in my novel," Dhand explained.

True stories of pioneering women in past centuries have not always received the notice and admiration they deserved, and Dhand said that in a wild, uncivilised place like the Cape of Good Hope at that time, a woman on her own would have faced a precarious future with no man to protect her.

"Catharina's story gave me the bare bones of a book, but to flesh out my novel, I needed a more thorough knowledge of life in a seventh century world - so I decided to explore the Dutch East India Company and it's administration of the Cape of Good Hope at this time in history," Dhan said.

"I now had to write to a professional timeline, with a year to produce and polish a book to the point that I wouldn't be ridiculously embarrassed to hand it to my publisher.

I began to panic that I wouldn't be able to make it good enough. It's fair to say that Book Two was a slog," she said.

So if Book Two was difficult, does that mean that Dhand is stepping away from writing more books? Well, no…

Victorian Arts Opera Australia

■ Australia's national opera company was born when a band of idealists - butchers pharmacists, newsagents - gave up their day jobs to celebrate the 1956 Mozart bicentenary with a season of four of his operas.

Nine years later, theatrical entrepreneur J. C. Williamson invited the company's chorus, staff and some of its best singers to perform alongside Joan Sutherland and Luciano Pavarotti.

Suddenly, everyone around the world knew about this little opera company. In 1957, the NSW State Government offered a grant towards the formation of a permanent state company.

The Sydney Opera House opened in 1973 with Prokofiev's War and Peace.

Three years later Joan Sutherland gave her famous interpretation of the title role in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor.

In 1952 she performed as Violetta in La Traviata at the inaugural Opera in the Domain.

Richard Meale's 1986 Voss, based on Nobel winner Patrick White's novel and with libretto by David Malouf, united some of the biggest names in local arts to stage a milestone of Australian-made opera.

Baz Luhrman's A Midsummers Night's Dream subsequently became the first Australian opera production to be performed internationally, at 1994's Edinburgh Festival.

Two years later, the company, then known as the Australian Opera, merged with the Victorian State Opera to form Opera Australia, under the artistic directorship of Moffatt Oxenbould.

In 2012, a spectacular production of La Traviata launched Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. The event quickly became an annual highlight of Sydney's cultural calendar.

More than 280,000 people from Australia and abroad have seen a Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour performance, which have included Carmen, Madama Butterfly, Aida, Turandot and La Bohème.

In 2013, the company performed its first Ring Cycle, directed by Neil Armfield and acclaimed by local and international critics.

The company also presented a captivating performance of A Masked Ball! By La Dura dels Baus, an exciting collaboration with three international opera companies.

Co-productions are an important part of Opera Australia's repertoire. Pooling resources with other prestigious companies mean you can hear unusual and lesser-known works more often.

Recent co-productions have included Szymanowski's King Roger. Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin and Shostakovich's The Nose.

Each year in Sydney and Melbourne, Opera Australia presents a musical, focussing on some of the greatest in the can.

■ Opera Australia has been forced to postpone its eagerly awaited presentation of Richard Wagner's The Ring, meaning it will stage no more performances until at least next year.

The massive show - the first production of The Ring using digital sets - was due to open in November in Brisbane's Queensland Performing Arts Centre, and has been expected to draw up to 70 per cent of its audience from interstate and overseas. Performances of Lucrezia Borgia in Sydney and Melbourne have also been scrapped.

Vale Geraldine Dillon ■ Melbourne TV pioneer Geraldine Dillon has died at the age of 84.

She was the presenter of the Fun With Food program in the 1960s on Melbourne’s GTV-9.

Ms Dillon paved the way for TV programs such as My Kitchen Rules and Masterchef.

She was the daughter of Sir John and Lady Sheila Dillon. Sir John was under-secretary in the Chief Secretary’s department in Sir Henry Bolte’s days as premier. He was the first Victorian Ombudsman.

Geraldine Dillon became the Home Service Adviser for the Gas and Fuel Corporation, and later woirked at Myer Melbourne where she conducted cooking demonstrations.

She worked at The Age and The Herald newspapers, as well as continuing media appearances on Melbourne radio station 3AK. She released The Geraldine Dillon Cookbook. Her career also included being the Catering and Hospitality Manager at the Moonee Valley Racing Club.

In retirement she lived at Glen Waverley, close to her brothers John, Brendan and Kevin.

She died on Wednesday last week (Aug. 26).

A funeral service is due to be held at 12.45pm tomorrow (Thurs.) and will be live-streamed.

Emma Valente is a freelance director, dramaturg, lighting designer and the Co Artistic Director and Co CEO of The Rabble.

The Rabble (Emma Valente and Kate Davis) produces experimental theatre that "interrogates the human condition through a combination of surreal and visceral aesthetics, a feminist sensibility, and the application of intellectually rigorous research."

Nikki Lam is an artist, curator and producer based in Kulin Country (Melbourne).

Born in Hong Kong, Nikki's work deals with the complexity of migratory expressions within and beyond the concept of diaspora.

Working primarily with moving images, performance and installation, her work explores hybridity often through studies of rituals, language and representations, as well as the medium of video.

Phuong Ngo is a Vietnamese-Australian artist and curator living and working in Naarm (Melbourne). He is co-director of Hyphenated Projects, based in Sunshine West with Nikki Lam. His practice is concerned with the interpretation of history, memory and place, and how it impacts individual and collective identity of the Vietnamese diaspora.

■ Iran tried to cover up the extent of its coronavirus outbreak by keeping nearly two-thirds of the country's deaths secret, according to a data leak obtained by BBC News.

Government records reportedly show that nearly 42,000 people have died with COVID-19 symptoms but the health ministry has only reported around 14,000.

The number of people confirmed to be infected is also almost double what the government said it was: 451,024 rather than 278,827. Even those dubious official numbers make Iran the worst-hit in the Middle East, but the leaked numbers show the outbreak was far worse than the government has tried to claim. The data also reportedly shows that first COVID-19 death in Iran was recorded on Jan. 22, a month before the first official case of the coronavirus was reported by the government. The BBC's unnamed source said they wanted to "shed light on truth" and end "political games" over the pandemic.

■ Trinidad "Trini" Lopez III died on August 11, according to the Palm Springs Life Magazine, where he had been a resident since the 1960s.

Some of his other hits included Lemon Tree, I'm Comin' Home, Cindy and Sally Was a Good Old Girl.

A documentary film called My Name Is Lopez had just been completed on Lopez's life from filmmakers P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes, and the filmmakers had just shown a cut of the film to Lopez.

The directors hope to premiere it in 202. Lopez also has some cult status as a designer of two vintage Gibson guitars that have since become collectors' items, the Gibson Trini Lopez Standard and the Gibson Trini Lopez Deluxe, which were in production from 1964 until 1971.

In all, Lopez scored 13 different singles that charted up through 1968, and in 1993 he was awarded a Golden Palm Star in his hometown of Palm Springs.

Good excuse to lose weight

■ More than a dozen of the world's most famous celebrities are financing left-wing organizations that openly seek the defunding of America's police departments.

Actors, models and singers have donated large sums to left-wing organisations including Color of Change, Black Lives Matter Global Network and the Movement for Black Lives, all of which are open about their desire to defund police departments across the country.

The Movement for Black Lives aims to abolish not only police departments, but America's prisons as well.

"We believe that prisons, police and all other institutions that inflict violence on Black people must be abolished and replaced by institutions that value and affirm the flourishing of Black lives," the website states.

Black Lives Matter Global Network, the national arm of Black Lives Matter, released a statement on May 30 calling for "a national defunding of police."

The organisation published a video on June 6 arguing that "defunding the police is the only way to stop pouring resources into a system that doesn't keep us safe."

■ A Coronavirus vaccine will likely be less effective in people who are obese, scientists say. Vaccines for other diseases including influenza, tetanus, rabies, and hepatitis B have been shown to be less effective among obese people, a pattern that researchers say will likely continue with the vaccine scientists around the world are scrambling to deliver.

"Will we have a COVID vaccine next year tailored to the obese? No way," Raz Shaikh, a nutrition associate professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, said. "Will it still work in the obese? Our prediction is no." The issue is particularly of concern in the United States, where more than 107 million Americans are obese. Those with a body mass index over 30 are among those at the greatest risk of experiencing severe COVID19 symptoms. This group encompasses about 42 percent of American adults.

■ It turns out that bucking trends may be good for business, because jersey sales for Orlando Magic player Jonathan Isaac have been surging since he decided to stand alone for the national anthem last Friday, becoming the first NBA player to do so amid the current spate of Black Lives Matter activism.

"Two days after the Magic's game on Friday, Isaac's jersey sales surged on the NBA's store," reports Fox News.

"As of Sunday, Isaac's jersey is the second-best seller on the league's website behind only Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James." ■ Minneapolis Police informed residents of the city's embattled 3rd Precinct to prepare for the giving up of their personal belongings to potential robbers, and advised them to do as criminals say for their own safety.

According to an email provided to Alpha News MN that was also forwarded to The Daily Wire, the Minneapolis Police Department offered "prevention tips" to residents hoping to avoid being a victim of the skyrocketing cases of robbery and carjacking that have plagued the city since George Floyd's death in May. "Robberies and carjacking's have increased in our Precinct," the email begins. "Cell phones, purses, and vehicles are being targeted. Some victims have been maced, dragged, assaulted, and some threatened with a gun. Most of these crimes have occurred north of 42nd St. E. 100 robberies and 20 carjackings have been reported to 3rd Precinct Police in July alone. Downtown and Southwest Minneapolis have seen an increase as well. We want those who live and work here to be safe!"

■ We all have memories of the early days of Australian rock and roll and one of the all time greats was Col Joye.

Colin Frederick Jacobsen was born in Sydney in 1936 he was one of four children and the family lived at East Hills.

When Colin was 14 he left school and went to work as a jewellery salesman.

He took guitar lessons at the age of 16 and formed a group under the name of The K J Quintet.

He later joined a group with his brothers Kevin and Keith where Col became a guitarist and lead singer.

He began using the stage name of Col Joye as the group played at clubs and pubs before changing their name to Col Joye and The Joy Boys.

In 1958 they were signed to a recording contact by Ken Taylor of Festival Records.

Their first single was Stagger Lee but their second recording of Bye Bye Baby went to number three in the hit parade in 1959.

I can remember being at a concert at Festival Hall for one of the Lee Gordon Big Shows when Col came onstage to make an announcement.

He held up a telegram saying that for the first time an Australian rock and roll song was number one on the hit parade - it was Oh Yeah, Uh Huh (with an old typewriter tapping out the beat) Col was one of the regular performers on

There is a DVD set of the Bandstand shows and it is wonderful to see Col singing in the series.

By 1963 Col Joye and The Joy Boys had released 20 singles, twenty four EPs and 23 albums.

In 1966 the Jacobsen family formed their own label ATARecords.

In 1970 Col Joye married Dalys Dawson and they have two children Amber and Clayton.

It was a double wedding as singer Sandy Scott married Col's sister Carol at the same time.

In 1973 Col was back on top of the hit parade with his recording of Heaven Is My Woman's

and fell several metres onto brick paving suffering extensive injuries.

I can remember producing a show for Ted Hamilton at a Sydney Leagues Club in 2002.

When I got to the rehearsals in the afternoon Ted told me that Col had already called in to see how things were going and had driven home to pick up an amplifier in his utility for us to use onstage.

I had a great time chatting to Col at a book launch many years ago and have had the pleasure of doing several radio interviews with him.

In 1981 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for his entertainment and philanthropic work.

Sadly in the last few years there has been legal action within the Jacobsen family over financial issues concerning their hit stage musical Dirty Dancing.

In recent times Col Joye hosted a rock and roll radio show on 2CH in Sydney.

For instance the Japanese Sunburst electrical guitar owned by Jimmy Hendrix was recently knocked down at auction for $209,000 – the reserve price was $50,000.

Guitars reach big money – the priciest being the instrument owned by David Gilmour of Pink Floyd went for $3.95 million in 2019.

Kingston Trio sings on

■ Somewhere, tonight three male singers and a bass player will step on stage as The Kingston Trio and sing the groups best seller Hang down your head Tom Dooley.

What started off in the late fifties as a group of Californian guys wearing striped shirts and plucking banjos has lived for six decades using the franchise licence to sing as the The Kingston Trio .

The original Kingston Trio toured Australia in 1961 and the name is still going strong particularly in America.

Masks as fashion accessory

■ With masks now an everyday accessory my mind drifted back to 19 when a group of three showbiz execs invented a manufactured rock band called The Mystrys.

The gimmick of the band was they wore a mask over their faces when and wherever they wen t- on stage, in public, probably to bed - they were inseparable from their masks.

The Mystrys were a one hit wonder and toured Victorian regional centres travelling in a road convoy.

The police were driven crazy with reports bank robbers wearing masks were burning up the bitumen and the fuzz failed to see the humour. The Mystrys faded to black and returned their masks.

Next stop for Tim Worner?

■ You will recall the very public airings of Seven CEO Tim Worner. His lifestyle led to his ‘gardening leave’.

Tim is almost free of the green thumb leave and open for offers. His name is swirling around the rumour mill for a top job in horse racing, a sport of which he is well versed.

Stars: *** Review: Surprisingly delightful, wacky and light-hearted tale of a young college student who scores an exclusive interview with a reclusive film director for her school newspaper, so along with her boyfriend, the couple head off to New York for a romantic weekend where they are met with bad weather and a series of unexpected It's a comfort in today's cinematic landscape that Woody Allen's personal and worldviews remain so faithfully, respectfully and uniquely his own, and this is no exception, a whimsical, light-hearted and entertaining film brimming with quirky characters and brimming with Woody Allen-esque stylized familiarity and comic strokes.

This is a fine effort with solid performances from a standout cast that includes Oscar nominee Timothy Chalamet as the confused and indecisive student and boyfriend, with a performance reflective of Allen himself, Liev Schreiber as the insecure director, Jude Law as the screenwriter, Diego Luna as the European heart-throb Francisco Vega, but most notably, Elle F anning as the enthusiastically quirky and high spirited writer and girlfriend on a mission who gets swept along on an unexpected ride that she will never forget.

Far from perfect, and not quite in the league of such of his films as "Midnight in Paris," "Match Point" or "Blue Jasmine," among others, nonetheless, along with the superb Manhattan location cinematography by multi-Oscar-winner and Woody Allen regular Vittorio Storaro, with no CGI, No Special Effects, No Car Chases, No Shoot Outs and No Pyrotechnics, like many of Allen's films, this is a sprightly, idiosyncratic and respectfully dippy journey that is as fresh and inviting as a cool breeze on a hot day.

Stars: **½ Review: When a pill that gives its users unpredictable superpowers for five minutes hits the streets of New Orleans, a teenage dealer and a local cop must team with an ex-soldier to take down the group responsible for its creation.

Netflix action-crime-superhero thriller romp has plenty to offer as Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and relative newcomer Dominique Fishback hit the streets of New Orleans with guns at the ready, but for all its whiz-bang action, visuals and pyrotechnics, it all ultimately reveals nothing more of a frenetic and muddled patchwork of vignettes that carry it through than the slick and seamless rollercoaster ride it should have been, yet for all its mend-bending psychological nuances and familiarity at play, this is a generally entertaining and stylish enough pot-boiler to pass the time.

Jamie Foxx as the ex-special forces officer (?), Joseph GordonLevitt as the cop and Dominique Fishback as the teenage dealer coast along with their charismatic baggage and deliver with all the drive, seriousness and force as you would expect in this new take on the superhero genre as they hunt down the cartel, and are aided by a fine supporting cast that includes Courtney B. Vance, Amy Landecker and Andrene Ward-Hammond, however, it's the visual and special effects teams that ultimately create the required spark to keep it alive before it all fizzles like the butt end of a fuse approaching a puddle of water.

At the end of the day when all is said and done, this is a silly, convoluted, formulaic, corny, noisy, crazy and intriguing effort that is sure to join a never-ending list of 'guilty pleasures' of the action sci-fi genre, and no doubt spawn a sequel, so for now, just sit back, switch off and just go along for the ride.

Rourke’s Reviews Cujo ■ (M) (1983). 93 minutes. Now available on Blu-ray, exclusive to JB Hi-Fi. Made during a time when Stephen King adaptations were as prolific as what superhero movies are today (The Shining, The Dead Zone, Christine, Stand By Me, Children Of The Corn, to name a few), Cujo is definitely one of the better versions to reach the big screen, and with King proving popular again after the huge success of the It films, this is the prefect time for this to make its Australian debut on blu-ray.

Dee Wallace stars as Donna Trenton, an unhappy housewife who is currently having an affair with Steve (Christopher Stone).

When her husband Vic (Daniel Hugh Kelly) finds out, he decides to go on a business trip to think on where their marriage is going.

During a visit to Vic's preferred car repair shop, run by Joe Camber (Ed Lauter), Donna and her five year-old son Tad (Danny Pintauro) suddenly find themselves under attack by Joe's normally loveable St. Bernard Cujo, who due to being bitten by a bat, has become rabid.

Trapped in their broken down car, and with the weather being hot, Donna realises they have a limited amount of time to escape.

Aided by a screenplay by Don Carlos Dunaway (Impulse, The Rockford Files) and Barbara Turner (Georgia, Pollock, The Company), Lewis Teague (Alligator, Fighting Back, Cat's Eye, The Jewel Of The Nile), who replaced original director Peter Medak, is able to build things slowly, allowing the viewer to become invested in the characters, while even presenting Cujo himself as an unfortunate victim, rather than a rampaging monster.

The attack scenes are well handled and effective, while the dramatic core is impressively bolstered by Wallace's strong performance.

Cujo is a slow-burn exercise (with a controversially changed ending) that may bore modern audiences, but is a good example of patience providing ample rewards.

It is a pity this release doesn't contain the copious extras contained on the deluxe U.K. blu-ray, which totalled over seven hours.

Elevator Trap ■ (MA) (2009). 107 minutes. Now streaming on Tubi.

Like a select group of movies (One Cut Of The Dead is a perfect recent example), Elevator Trap is one where the less you know about

● Donna (Dee Wallace) and her young son have to contend with a formidable enemy in Lewis Teague's slow-burn thriller Cujo, a fine adaptation of Stephen King's best-selling novel, and now available on Blu-Ray. the plot the better, otherwise there is the risk of discovering its wellplaced twists, which are cleverly integrated into what initially appears to be a pretty simple premise.

After an introductory scene that compares life to a baseball game, we are introduced to Jun (Takumi Saito), who awakens on the floor of an apartment block elevator.

Surrounded by three strangers, Jun is told that the elevator dropped suddenly soon after he got on, causing him to fall heavily and be knocked unconscious.

The battery in Jun's mobile phone needs charging, while the others don't have phones at all. for varying reasons.

The three are a gangster called Tominaga (Masaaki Uchino), a Goth Girl (Aimi Satsukawa), and a mild-mannered resident (Fuyuki Moto).

While the quartet wait for help to arrive, individual secrets start to surface.

Based on the best-selling novel

by Hanta Kinoshita (One Third), and adapted for the screen by Kenichi Suzuki (Dark Water, Golden Slumber, The Magnificent Nine), Elevator Trap is well constructed, drawing us in with intriguing and at-times quite funny dialogue and character interplay, while actor-turned-director Keisuke Horibe (who has a supporting role in the current true-life drama Fukushima 50, with Ken Watanabe) makes sure not to give the game away too quickly, and allows his talented cast to shine (it's puzzling as to why this is Horibe's only directing effort to date).

There will be some who will not like where the story goes, but for those who remain on its wavelength, there will be much to enjoy and treasure as the group's dilemma plays out.

Patrobas story

■ The story of Patrobas, the first and only Gippsland horse to ever win the Melbourne Cup, has finally made into print.

Local community advocate Dawn O’Connell, along with others who worked tirelessly to see the book project come to fruition ,also succeeded in getting a statue of the 1915 cup champion erected in Rosedale.

Shiraz planted by McIntosh ■ The Mount Langi Ghiran vineyard and winery are quite rightly regarded as being virtually synonmous with the late Trevor Mast who, with his wife Sandra and partner Ian Menzies, purchased the splendid central Victorian property and its fledgling vineyard, in the mid-1980s.

But the first shiraz vines had been planted years previously by W.H. McIntosh and the vineyard purchased in 1970 by the Italian Fratin family, who successfully made wine from there and also sold grapes to nearby Seppelts.

Brothers Don, Lino and Serge Fratin expanded the vineyard, planting cabernet sauvignon, riesling, merlot and cabernet franc, and also established groves of nuts and fruit.

Mast didn't become involved until 1980, when he was hired as a consultant.

But what a difference the quietly spoken, German-trained winemaker made, quickly turning the Mount Langi Ghiran label into an icon for Austalian cool-climate shiraz and also pursuing his love for riesling.

In 2006 Trevor was diagnosed with early-onset alzheimers and died in 2012, the wine industry being robbed of his talent far too early.

But by that time his beloved Langi was in the good, safe hands of the Melbourne-based Rathbone family who had the means to take the operation to its

It is a classic Australian cool-climate shiraz which is solid oak.

Guineas attract the best ■ The Caulfield Guineas, to be run on October 10, has attracted some smart three-year olds, to race for glory on the big day.

The Hawkes team, North Pacific, heads the charts at around $9 , from the Danny O'Brien charge, Flying Award.

North Pacific, by the Newmarket winner Brazen Beau, has impressed greatly since the first of his three runs.

At his first outing he finished a good third behind the eventual Golden Slipper winner, Farnan.

Then was sent out favourite at his next outing, and blitzed the opposition over 1100 metres on a Heavy 8 rating, winning by just under three lengths, hard held.

Back on August 15, the Hawkes team produced him again, this time on a heavy 10 track at Randwick, moving him up to 1300 metres and he just smashed them winning running away by a conservative five lengths.

All along the Hawkes have been rapping the colt, and feel he could be the one to beat come Caulfield Guineas day, if everything goes well.

One that has come right into the markets after three runs, is the Danny O'Brien trained Flying Award, quoted at $10.

He has also had the three runs with two seconds and a win from his three outings.

At Flemington back on April 25, he missed the start by a couple of lengths, but proved too good with Damien Oliver in the saddle, winning running away.

He is by O'Brien's Cox Plate winner, in Shamus Award, who is doing well at stud for a young sire.

On the same line is the top Sydney colt, King's Legacy, who won the Champagne Stakes at Randwick back on April 18.

His trainers, the father and son team of Peter and Paul Snowden, know what is all about, and the colt is smart, beating the Victorian colt, Glenfiddich,last start.

The Blue Diamond Stakes winner, Tagaloa, is also on the second line of betting.

He was a good fourth in the Golden Slipper, and the Trent Busuttin-Natalie Young team have a big opinion of the colt, who has worked well recently.

Yankee gold gave plenty all the way ■ Popular Maryborough was the venue to commence the week on Monday August 24 and Ararat based freelance reinsman Michael Bellman once again showed why he is one of the best around the provincials with a great drive to land the Maryborough Advertiser 3Y0 Pace over 1690 metres aboard the Wayne Ferguson (Ararat) trained Mr Feelgood-The Princess Poet gelding Ghanasuya.

Settling three back in the moving line from gate two on the second line, Ghanasuya went forward three wide in the last lap to join the leader Rising High approaching the final bend and race clear shortly after.

Although Safe Jewels which had followed him home issued a challenge in the straight, Ghanasuya held her at bay to score by a half head in a mile rate of 1-56.8. Alte which trailed the weakening leader was third after switching around him to head for the sprint lane on turning.

■ Riddell trainer/driver Chris Lang produced a smart former Kiwi from the deep south by the name of Full Noise a gelded 4Y0 son of Majestic Son and Knapdale Girl to land the 2190 metre Volstead @ Haras Des Trotteurs Trotters Mobile when making his Aussie debut. Raced by Nick Guida who was a part-owner of Grand Circuit performer and great stayer Franco Ice, Full Noise first up since winning at Ascot Park (Invercargill) in May had little difficulty in obtaining the lead from Flaming Eyes and after an easy time looked set score comfortably, but only just held on by a head from the fast finishing Quality Sunset (last at the bell), with Flaming Eyes holding down third 6 metres away. ■ Bannockburn co-trainers Emmett and Richard Brosnon's 4Y0 American Ideal-Diamonds N Gold gelding Yankee Gold has progressively made his way through the grades and chalked up his 4th success in eight outings by taking the Crameri's Mighty Helpful Mitre 10 Pace over 1690 metres in a rate of 1-55.4. Driven by Emmett, Yankee Gold was not bustled from gate five, ambling forward to assume control racing for the bell.

Although challenged hard by Abouttime prior to the home turn, Yankee Gold gave plenty in the run to the wire, reaching the judge 1.1 metres in advance of Abouttime who didn't shirk the issue after racing exposed from the bell.

Ozzie Battler which trailed the winner after leading out was third 7.2 metres back. The winner is raced by the Ballarat & District Trotting Club Standardbred Group and former President Neil Stevens along with present CEO Paul Rowse.

Shepp. success ■ Shepparton raced on Tuesday with an interesting nine event card and Romsey trainer/driver Chris Svanosio scored a well deserved victory with ever reliable 3Y0 Quaker Jet-Queens Vacation gelding Im Hector in the Shepparton Travelworld Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

Stepping cleanly from inside the 10 metre mark, Im Hector settled on the back of the well supported Gus Or Bust which flew away from barrier three to enjoy a saloon passage. When the heavily backed Fields Of Kyvalley after an early break went forward to park in the open before galloping approaching the final bend, In Hector was eased away from the inside in the straight and finished his race off well to register a 2.8 metre margin over Fratellino along the sprint lane after following the winner throughout, with Starlight Storm (four back the markers - one/one home turn) third 1.8 metres away. The mile rate 2-05.6.

■ Indigo Valley (Barnawatha) father and son Wayne and Chris Anderson would have been relieved when their much travelled 9Y0 Flight Path-Bye Focals gelding Postal Express was successful in the Neatline Homes Pace over 1690 metres.

Starting from the extreme draw, Postal Express possied three back in the moving line as Cheeki Philtra led from gate three. Trailing Alberio ahead of him forward three wide in the last lap, Postal Express after making the final bend wide did best in a punishing finish to prevail by a half neck in a rate of 1-59.5.

Past by the favourite Frankie on the home turn which sprinted fast from three back to joinAveiro, Jemsoms Pet looked likely to hold down third, but rallied in the straight to wear down Frankie which looked all over a winner by a half head in a rate of 1-58.6, with Aveiro third 2.6 metres away.

■ Tatura trainer Wally Turco and Abbey Turnbull were victorious with 4Y0 Modern ArtXmas In Manhattan mare Tuffanuff in the Your Sold Real Estate Pace over 1690 metres.

Given an easy time three back the markers from inside the second line, Tuffanuff was extricated to be one/one running into the final bend and when eased three wide on turning, finished best to score by two metres from Roquefort Cheese (one/one - three wide home turn) and the weakening leader La La Bron who held third a half neck back. The mile rate 1-57.6. Abbey had earlier in the night guided Regulus to victory in the 1690 metre Hunter Rural Pace for Bolinda trainer Kari Males.

In the Circle ■ At Bendigo on Wednesday, Lockwood trainer Ronnie Wicks was successful with 6Y0Armbro Variable-Derwinda gelding Armbro Hugh who returned to the winners circle for the first time since scoring at Kilmore in August 2018. Driven

by Bendigo's Jayden Brewin, Armbro Hugh starting from 10 metres stepped safely to settle four back in the moving line trailing the well backed favourite The Summer Cat (10m) ahead of him as Primz Luck led from barrier three.

When The Summer Cat sprinted sharply approaching the final bend, Armbro Hugh latched to his back but had trouble keeping up. When The Summer Cat dashed clear in the straight with the race safely in his keeping, he went off stride allowing Armbro Hugh to nab him in the concluding stages and greet the judge by 4.2 metres, with Gooroc Gambler (three back the markers) third 1.7 metres back, The mile rate 2-02.5.

■ Nanneella part-owner/trainer Col Godden snared the TAB Long May We Play Pace over 2150 metres with Clever Cowboy, a 5Y0 Western Terror-Love And Learn gelding who in doing so, registered his first success in 47 outings.

Driven by Abbey Turnbull, Clever Cowboy who has been racing in consistent form of late enjoyed a cosy passage from the pole trailing stablemate Jet Black Orion which led from gate two. Using the sprint lane, Clever Cowboy scored by a nose from Liberland (one/three - three wide last lap), with first starter Heza Secret third a head away after following the runner up all of the way. The mile rate 2-00.1.

■ Local trainer Brad Stevens landed the Bendigo Ski Boat Centre 3Y0 Trotters Mobile

over 2150 metres with Imperial Count-Maori Azolla filly Everybodylovesme in a rate of 203.9. Responsible for a gigantic effort when third at Charlton a week earlier after giving away a huge start, Everybodylovesme on this occasion speared across the face of the field from gate six to lead and rated well by Ellen Tormey, ran home a 6.3 metre victor from Whos Countin which trailed. Patched used the sprint lane for third after following the pair.

■ Wednesday - Ballarat, Thursday Cranbourne/Bendigo, Friday - Melton/ Mildura, Saturday - Shepparton, Sunday Stawell, Monday - Maryborough, Tuesday Kilmore.

■ Thursday was once again double day with Horsham racing in the afternoon and Echuca at night.

The progressive Horsham HRC held their first meeting for almost six six months when a keenly contested eight event card was held.

Terang based Jason Camilleri combined with Jason Lee to register a big 20.6 metre victory with 6Y0 Rocknroll Hanover-Tiz Herself gelding Rocknroll Cruiser in the Bernie Poulton Memorial Pace over 2200 metres.

Beginning brilliantly from outside the front line to lead, Rocknroll Cruiser was never headed although Lost For Words which had raced outside him was applying a serious challenge only to go off stride on the home turn leaving the leader a 'mile" clear of his rivals.

Honest gelding Atego Shades (three back the markers) was second and Miss Chianti (four back the markers) third 8.3 metres back. The mile rate 2-01.6.

■ It was no surprise to see Kerryn Manning snare a double on the day, driving ex-Kiwi 4Y0 McArdle-Trevi Bromac gelding Steam Punk to victory in the 2200 metre Decron Horse Care Pace, while Bolinda's Brad Chisholm piloted 4Y0 Mach Three-Western Spirit gelding Valienti to land the 1700 metre Claire Weston Photography Pace after taking a concession. Steam Punk raced by sponsor Merv Butterworth was restrained from gate five to settle four back the markers as Melanna Beach led from gate two.

Gaining a lovely one/one trail in the last lap following Big Gun Johnny home from last, Steam Punk when asked for an effort on the home turn finished strongly to defeat semi-stablemate Deadly Assassin when clear from a pocket on the back of the leader, with Big Gun Johnny holding down third. The margins 11.6 metres by a neck in 2-01.6. Valiente brought up a hat-trick by leading throughout from gate five to easily account for a game Abbey Fields which raced exposed by 10.1 metres in 2-00.9. Ideal TJ was third 2.5 metres away following a one/one trip.

■ Bendigo (Shelbourne) duo Kate Hargreaves and Alex Ashwood also landed a double with Art Major-Secret Jewel 4Y0 gelding Good Cop registering his first success at start number 25 to take the 3WM - Ace Radio Horsham Maiden Pace over 1700 metres and 4Y0 Orlando ViciGlenferrie-Unixa gelding Beau Garcon the 2200 metre Speeding Spur @ Woodlands Stud Trotters Handicap.

Good Cop began with a rush from outside the front line to lead throughout, defeating Princess Alexandra (three back the markers) by 4 metres and Aboutgirl which trailed the winner finishing a neck back back. The mile rate 2-02.3. Beau Garcon which can be risky at times did everything right and after going forward from four back to breeze at the bell, led for the final circuit to score by 8.2 metres in advance of The Girls Got Flair (three wide last lap), with Jaden Gil third 10.1 metres back after trailing the leader Show Me The Moolah which broke at the bell.

The mile rate 2-06.1. The win was a belated gift for Kate who celebrated her birthday earlier in the week.

■ Heywood's Bec East kept her great recent record going by taking The Weekly Advertiser 3Y0 Pace over 2200 metres with Shadow PlayDee Cee Cullen filly Eastbro Adele. Despite racing uncovered from gate six outside the leader Iron Chariot inside her, reinsman Michael Bellman was never perturbed and Eastbro Adele was too strong over the concluding stages, scoring by 1.9 metres from the pacemaker, with Premonition rattling home late for third 8.4 metres back after galloping in the last lap. The mile rate 2-01.4.

■ At Echuca, Ardmona's Donna Castles was successful with 5Y0 Smiling Shard-U R Whatu

Going forward from outside the front line to cross roughie Wonderforce entering the straight on the first occasion, Penitente after an easy time, kicked right away to score by 20.4 metres from Ears Ponder (one/one) in a mile rate of 2-01.9.

Rambleon (one/three) was third 1.3 metres back.

I'ts no easy feat to win from the extreme draw, but consistent A Rocknroll Dance-Bellandalla Baby colt Allshookup was able to do that in the 2160 metre Lloyd Sound 3Y0 Pace for Rochester part-owner/trainer/driver Shane Eeles.

Settling at the tail, Allshookup trailed After The Chase ahead of him forward mid-race only to be left on a limb three wide as After The Chase dropped in to trail Rambunctious which was racing uncovered. Travelling wide from the bell, Allshookup's quality showed as he raced clear in the last lap with After The Chase giving chase. Holding a margin on turning, Allshookup reached the wire 1.7 metres ahead of After The Chase, with first starter Beau Steele third 2.5 metres away in third place after spending most of the race four back the markers. The mile rate 1-58.9.

■ t was a long day for James Herbertson who had driven at Horsham in the afternoon, but he was rewarded for his efforts when victorious aboard Pyramid Hill part-owner/trainer Andrew Grogan's 12Y0 The Wrath Of Pan-Fly Home gelding Nuggetpan in the 1755 metre Moama Bowling Club Pace.

Starting inside the second line, Nuggetpan enjoyed a cosy passage three back the markers as both Jackierabbit (gate two) and Exciter (gate three) cut at one another. Taken into the clear approaching the final bend, Nuggetpan when eased three wide, finished full of running to gain the day by 3.7 metres over Ajay Breezy Rose along the sprint lane after trailing the leader which held down third 2.8 metres back. The mile rate 1-56.3. It was Nuggetpan's 15th success in 156 outings.

■ Tabcorp Park Melton held their regular Friday afternoon meeting and 4Y0 Rocknroll Hanover-State Of The Nation entire Rock Of The Nation scored in the IRT Australia Pace over 2240 metres when mking his race debut.

Trained at Koo Wee Rup by Brad Costello and driven by son Kyal, Rock The Nation led throughout after beginning speedily from the pole and after dictating an even tempo kicked clear on the home turn. Shortening stride halfway up the running, Rock The Nation had enough in reserve to register a 1.9 metre victory over Our Safari Sun (one/two - three wide last lap) by 1.9 metres in a rate of 1-59.3. Extortion was third 1.3 metres away after racing in the open.

■ Toolern Vale trainer Tayla Nicholson snared the 2240 metre Allied Express Pace with 5Y0 Village Jolt-Kano Phoebe gelding Lenard Ess in a mile rate of 1-56. Given an easy time from gate four three back along the markers, reinsman Jack Laugher eased Lenard Ess away from the inside to be poised one/one approaching the final bend and when asked for an effort on turning, answered to call to finish his race off well.
