■ Whitehorse Council is wary about the the South Eastern Advanced Waste Processing procurement project, facilitated by the Metropolitan Waste and Resource Recovery Group.

The project is for the processing of municipal waste for up to 16 south-east suburban councils using advanced waste and resource recovery technology.

Detailed planning for the complex twoyear four-stage procurement project commenced early last year.

Whitehorse Council, at its meeting on Monday night (Aug. 24) was reminded that it resolved in May last year to participate on a non-committal basis in the first two stages of the project, an Expression of Interest phase followed by an outline solution tender stage.

The project timing and tender stages have changed as a result of significant delays, initially because the State Government put the project on hold awaiting the release of its new Recycling Victoria Policy - circular economy plan, and most recently due to COVID 19 impacts on waste industry tenders.

The revised tender arrangements were listed in a report prepared for Whitehorse City Councillors.

Box Hill man missing

● Gregory Blackburn ■ Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate missing Box Hill man, Gregory Blackburn.

Gregory was last seen at his home on Thursday (Aug. 22).

Police and Gregory’s family hold concerns for his welfare as the 62-year-old suffers from a medical condition and has poor eyesight.

Gregory is described as of Caucasian appearance, medium height and build, with receding black hair.

He’s known to frequent the Box Hill shopping centre and sometimes takes the train to the Melbourne CBD. Investigators have released an image of Gregory in the hope that someone can provide information on his current whereabouts.

Stolen card use probe

■ Monash Crime Investigation Unit detectives are hoping to identify a man in relation to an investigation into a theft from motor vehicle in Chadstone last month.

Investigators have been told a vehicle which was parked on Margot St was broken into sometime on the morning of July 22.

The front driver side window was smashed and once inside, the vehicle was searched and a wallet containing the victim’s bank cards was stolen.

Two purchases were made at nearby service stations in Dandenong Rd, Oakleigh at 5.36am and then in nearby Ferntree Gully Rd, Mount Waverley at 5.56am.

Investigators have released CCTV of a man who they believe will be able to assist with their enquiries.

He is described as Caucasian in appearance, approximately 180cm tall with a stocky build.

The man was wearing a Carlton baseball cap, a twotone high vis shirt and jacket, gloves, beige pants and work boots at the time.

It is understood a 2004 red Toyota Corolla was travelling north along Clayton Rd when the driver veered and crashed into a power pole about 2pm on August 14.

The front passenger, an 85-yearold Clarinda woman, was taken to hospital with serious injuries but sadly died on Thursday (Aug. 20).

The driver, a 55-year-old Clarinda woman, was transported to hospital for observation but has since been released.

Detectives are investigating the cause of the crash and urge anyone who witnessed it or with dash cam footage to come forward.

■ An application for a liquor licence (packaged liquor for consumption offpremises) at 2 The Mall, Wantirna, was recommended to proceed, subject to conditions, at this week’s meeting of Knox Council.

“It is considered that the liquor licence associated with a bottle shop at 2 The Mall, Wantirna strikes an appropriate balance between providing a use that is appropriate given the site’s context, compliments the surrounding commercial uses and will not unreasonably detract from the amenity of the surrounding area,” said a report to Councillors.

Under the suggested permit conditions, the sale of packaged liquor must only occur within the following hours: ■ Monday to Sunday, 10am to 10pm ■ ANZAC Day and Good Friday, 12 noon to 10pm

Knoxbrooke lease at FTG

■ Knox City Council (lessor) is set to enter a lease agreement Knoxbrooke for 88 Station St, Ferntree Gully commencing Friday (Aug. 28).

The lease will be for a period of one year, with a further one-year option, with the rental being $17,884.80 per annum (plus GST) increasing annually by 3 per cent, plus outgoings.

Knoxbrooke, Victorian Disability Service Providers, is the current tenant of the property.

■ Darebin Crime Investigation Unit detectives have arrested a man and uncovered 21 bottles of allegedly stolen wine following an ongoing burglary investigation. Police are investigating the theft of a bicycle in Balwyn last month. Investigators have been told the bike was stolen from the multi-level carpark of a block of units on Whitehorse Rd between 6.20am and 7.20am on July 31. The bicycle is a black ‘Felt F75’. The offender is described as Caucasian in appearance, medium height and overweight. Police have released images of a man who may be able to assist them with their investigation.

A little over half of Knox Council’s capital works budget was completed in the past year, Monday night’s meeting of Councillors was told. “In overall financial terms, 66.8 per cent of the Capital Works Adjusted Budget was committed in 2019/20 and 55.3 per cent expended. ■ Detectives are investigating a burglary at a Lysterfield service station that is believed linked to an attempted ATM theft in Dandenong last month.

Two male offenders forced their way into the Lysterfield Rd servo about 5.40am on July 5.

Both men stole a number of confectionary items before fleeing.

Police believe the pair also tried to steal an ATM from a market on Clow St about 3am the following day. They were unsuccessful and left the scene empty-handed.

Investigators have released photos and CCTV of two men they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.

The first offender is perceived to be Caucasian, tall with a thin build, large nose and has dark features. He was wearing a black jacket, dark jeans and black and white shoes The second offender was described as having a solid build and had his face covered with a surgical mask.

He was wearing a camouflage hoodie, blue over black jacket, dark pants and tan footwear.

The offenders were using a blue early to mid90s E-Class W210 Mercedes Benz with no front bonnet ornament.

■ Manningham Council has commended Victoria Police for establishing the CommConnect initiative.

The Council said it is looking forward to working with Acting Inspector Jordan and the local Victoria Police team on any initiatives stemming from a survey that help keep Manningham one of the safest municipalities in Victoria.

Whitehorse Gazette Tree removal OK

■ Whitehorse Council's planning decision about 24 Sandgate Rd, Blackburn South, has been set aside by Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal member Jane Tait.

$2m for Dorset Reserve ■ Sonja Terpstra, MLC for Eastern Metropolitan, spoke in State Parliament last week about the upgrade that will happen at Dorset Recreation Reserve in Croydon.

Ms Terpstra said that $2 million will go to upgrade their facilities thanks to the State Labor government and Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence.

“This fantastic upgrade will see the redevelopment of a soccer hub at the reserve and include a two-storey pavilion, six change rooms with amenities, one umpire change room, a full-size synthetic soccer pitch with sports lighting to 150 lux, a full-size grass soccer pitch with sports lighting to 150 lux, two warm-up pitches marked for futsal and volleyball, and car park works.

Knox ensures probity ■ Knox Council has conducted an audit review to ensure that it was not unduly affected by the workings of a company that has been the subject of investigation by the Independent Broad-basedAnti-Corruption Commission.

This week’s Knox Council meeting, held on Monday night (Aug. 24) was told “that a search of Council’s Planning Permit and Amendment Records, identified two applications lodged by parties named in the Independent Broad-based Anti-Corruption Commission Public Hearings as part of Operation Sandon – were lodged at Knox City Council for a period extending back 15 years.

“The results of the Audit of Planning Applications: P/2012/6199 - 3 James Street, Bayswater and; P/2015/6021 - 6 Rangeview Road, Boronia (both lodged by Watsons Pty Ltd) do not suggest that Watsons Pty Ltd had any special influence over the actions of officers, including as part of the decisions to approve the permit applications and/or to subsequently endorse plans.”

Councillors, led by Mayor Cr Nicole Seymour, were advised that Council proactively undertook an audit of all planning permit and amendment applications extending back 15 years.

■ Damien Kuan Min Sim has won an appeal to the Victorian Civil andAdministrative Tribunal to have a Knox Council permit changed for land at 31 Burke Rd, Ferntree Guily.

VCAT member Katherine Paterson determined that a permit be allowed for the construction of three dwellings on a lot; and the construction of a front fence.

This will provide for the construction of three double-storey dwellings.

Maroondah Mail Plans substituted

■ Substituted plans prepared by Craig Corfield of Urban Arch Design will be allowed for a planning permit issued by Maroondah Council after a VCAT hearing sought by Manbir Sandhu and others.

Big Brother is watching ■ Parliamentarian David Limbrick is concerned about the level of surveillance on citizens, especially during the COVID-19 restrictions.

“In response to the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen drastic restrictions of individual freedoms, which consequently have meant greater levels of police surveillance,” Mr Limbrick told the Legislative Council last week.

“Across the state, police have been enforcing these new rules using a variety of techniques.

“We now need papers to travel, we have a five-kilometre travel zone, we have one hour of exercise a day and we are locked inside at 8 pm. I could go on.

“While these rules and restrictions are concerning enough, it is equally frightening to imagine what kind of surveillance the public is under to ensure they adhere to these new measures.

“Earlier this year three new helicopters were added to the Victoria Police air wing with highdefinition long-range cameras.

“These helicopters are very large and loud and are very easily identifiable as Police.

“On the other hand, we have recently seen drones deployed in Melbourne’s south to monitor beaches and skate parks,” Mr Limbrick said.

“In doing some research myself, it is clear that there is not a competitiongrade basketball court for some distance around Kerrimuir Primary School, and so my proposition to the Minister for Education would be that if he could see his way to providing some significant funding to Kerrimuir Primary School, which they rightly deserve, for the construction of a gym, that is something that over time the school could use as a community resource—and I know that the leadership at the school is very willing to do that.

“So the action that I seek from the Minister for Education this afternoon is to do just that: to commit to providing funding to Kerrimuir Primary School for a much-needed gymnasium.”

Maroondah support for kids ■ Maroondah Council has adopted the Children and Families Strategy, which seeks to support Council in raising the wellbeing of children and families locally.

Deputy Mayor Cr Marijke Graham said ensuring the views of children and their families and caregivers were heard was fundamental to the development of the Strategy.

“In developing a new Children and Families Strategy, Council sought the views of more than 3000 children, parents and carers, and the broader Maroondah community, including education and service providers, using a range of consultation methods to find out how we can better meet the needs of Maroondah children and their families,” Cr Graham said.

The new Children and Families Strategy replaces the Maroondah City Council Children’s Plan 2015-2019 asCouncil’s key strategic document regarding children and their families.

The Strategy has involved extensive community consultation, research and needs analysis with children and stakeholders in Maroondah to identify their needs and help plan the most effective ways to maximise wellbeing outcomes for children and their families.

■ Sanjayan Sivasubramaniam has been successful in an application to the Victorian Civil and Adminstrative Tribunal to have a Monash City Council decision set aside.

VCAT member Jane Tait determined that the Council endorse plans prepared for 30 Tamarisk Ave, Glen Waverley.

■ Knox Council is establishing a new Audit and Risk Committee comprising two Councillor members and three independent members.

Lisa Tripodi and Homi Burjorjee have been recommended as independent members, concluding May 31, 2023, and June 30, 2022 respectively.

An expression of interest is currently underway for the third independent member, with an appointment report to be submitted to Council in November.

Kerrimuir in spotlight ■ Kerrimuir Primary School was in the spotlight in State Parliament last week when Eastern Metropolitan MLC Dr Matthew Bach raised the issue.

“There is much concern also broadly about the standard of education that is being delivered to students, and I heard several issues raised specifically about a fantastic school in Box Hill North called Kerrimuir Primary School. “ I want to make sure that I am careful to put on the record in raising this matter the fact that not one of those concerns regarding the school reflects in any way on the fantastic teaching staff there, who are working harder than ever to deliver remote learning to the students that they serve, or on the leadership of the school, but rather they reflect upon this government in a negative light regarding funding—or perhaps a lack

Ferntree Gully lease ■ Knox Council looks set to proceed with a new lease with Bellco Excavations Pty Ltd for 16 Kevin Ave, Ferntree Gully, commencing this week.

The lease will be for a period of three years, with the annual rental being $13,300 plus GST and outgoings, increasing annually by 3 per cent.

The vacant land is 1000sqm and was acquired by Council in 2004. The previous tenant, Master Platinum Nissan, vacated early this month.

■ The Grand Warrandyte’s taps have been switched off since March 23. Warrandyte’s local bar and eatery has not seen a closure of this length in its 120-year history.

If history is anything to go by however, the pub will emerge from Coronavirus with flying colours and with a shiny new beer garden.

Fire, floods and everything in-between has beset the Yarra Street establishment over its 120-year journey and while General Manager Peter Appleby is confident the Grand will re-open its doors when appropriate, he admits the lockdown period has been a tough one, especially in the early days of the virus.

YVCA merges

■ The Yarra Valley Cricket Association will merge with the Ringwood and District Cricket Association in a move that will alter the sport in the Yarra Valley and the 114 year old association.

YVCA president David Peel told Star Mail that cricket had been diminishing in the Yarra Valley for quite some time and that it was no longer a growth area for the sport.

“In the current economic times, we’ve found that people who live in the Yarra Valley in the 18-26 age bracket are now working a six day week meaning saturday cricket is being lost to them,” Peel said.

Health hub launches

■ A new local Youth Health Hub is now offering support to young people through phone and video call.

The Youth Health Hub is for people aged 12-25 in the Lilydale, Yarra Ranges and surrounding areas.

It will provide mental and general health support while also offering life skills and support. Due to COVID-19 the hub is currently only operating virtually but services are set to expand as restrictions ease.

The Youth Health Hub is operated by Inspiro Community Health Service and partners, including Oonah Health and Community Services Aboriginal Corporation, Eastern Community Legal Centre, Anchor housing services and Cire education services.

■ Tradies have rallied around one of their own with more than $125,000 raised in three days to support the young sons of a Kilsyth electrician who died at work.

Jarrod Fox, 37, was electrocuted while he worked underneath a home in Ringwood’s Kalinda Rd on Tuesday, August 18.

A GoFundMe fundraiser for a trust fund for his two sons, Archer, 2, and Jasper, five weeks, had raised more than $125,000 as of Saturday (Aug. 22) after it began on Wednesday, August 19.

Fines waived

■ A student nurse who incurred $660 of parking fines in a school zone near Dandenong Hospital has had the bill waived by Greater Dandenong Council.

The nurse, who was fined while working at the hospital, told Seven News she’d assumed the school zone didn’t apply due to the COVID-linked shutdown of schools.

She had unknowingly transgressed several times until receiving the infringement notices in the mail.

Go-ahead for elections ■ Local government elections will go ahead as scheduled for Saturday, October 24.

This follows advice to the State Government from Professor Brett Sutton, the Victorian Chief Health Officer.

“As Minister for Local Government, I sought advice from the Victorian Government Solicitor’s Office and Chief Health Officer as to how best to proceed while Victoria is in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic,” said Shaun Leane.

“I also engaged with the local government sector to fully understand concerns regarding the impact of current restrictions in Victoria on campaigning, and relayed that I would act on advice from the Chief Health Officer.

“The Chief Health Officer has advised that October represents a period when risk is likely to be substantially lower than at present, and there are no compelling public health grounds for the elections to be delayed.

“The Chief Health Officer has also worked closely with the Victorian Electoral Commission and is satisfied that appropriate physical distancing, cleaning and hygiene and workforce planning have all been considered and integrated into the VEC’s COVIDSafe plans,” Mr Leane said.

Relief need at Wantirna ■ Bruce Atkinson, Eastern Metropolitan MLC, has raised the problem faced by the Hungarian community at Wantirna.

“The Hungarian community in Wantirna has appealed to the State Revenue Office for relief from land tax and has had two communications from the land tax office, both of them after I had intervened and sought the Treasurer’s followup and to actually get somebody at that office to return a call or some other communication,” MrAtkinson told the Legislative Council.

“The two pieces of information that went to the Hungarian club were totally contradictory and leave that organisation in some real difficulty, given that they have not been able to operate for six months but are incurring a significant liability.

“No doubt other community clubs are in the same situation.

Small biz needs help: MLC ■ Dr Matthew Bach, Eastern Metropolitan MLC (Liberal), is concerned for the small businesses of Melbourne’s east and north-east.

He addressed a question to Jaala Pulford, the State Small Business Minister when the Legislative Council sat last week.

“When the hotel quarantine wave finishes and when we seek to finally reopen our economy and get back to work, we are going to rely on small businesses to do a huge amount of the heavy lifting,” Dr Bach said.

“And yet this government is failing to support them, with hiked payroll tax on July 1 in the middle of the pandemic, and it is offering no financial assistance to sole traders.

“My office is being inundated with calls from small business owners in Melbourne’s east and north-east crying out for greater help.

“No wonder one in eight small and medium businesses are set to close.

“So my question is: how does the minister expect sole traders and the smallest businesses to kickstart our economy post COVID, when the government’s own policies will force so many of them to close?”

■ A most successful bazaar in aid of the funds of the Ringwood Tennis Club was held in the Parish Hall on Saturday afternoon and evening last. Though the effort was only on a comparatively moderate scale, between £40 and £50 was raised, which was highly creditable to the lady workers.

The opening ceremony was performed by the shire president (Cr W. MacKinlay), and there were large attendances at both sesssions, during which good business was done at the various stalls. The lady promoters included Mesdames Bloodm Knox, Trethown, Williams and A.T. Miles, and Misses Lillycrap, Wilby, Currie and Williams.

Railway bridge

■ Residents of Ringwood will be gratified to learn that tlie Railway Department at last contemplates erecting an overload bridge at the local station.

This work will be undertaken almost immediately. The bridge is to span right from Station street over to the approach to the platform on tlie northern side, and will be of great convenience, particularly to the school children when the new State s chool is built,, it will also obviate to a large extent the danger attendant on crossing the line at Bedford road.

VALE TOM TRAVERS ● Grace Egan and Emily Egan in Stories Beneath the Vale.

■ Australian arts company Phunktional Arts has gathered leading creatives from across the country to work with the diverse communities of rural Victorian township Robinvale on a film project called Stories Beneath the Vale.

The project is the realisation of the participation of Elders and youth in the Phunktional Arts programs over a four-year period.

Led by Phunktional's Artistic Director Gerard Veltre, local area co-ordinators and a mix of local and nationally recognised artists facilitated workshops with the young people of the Murray River township.

Their vision has driven the development of the storyline, script scenes and choreography of the work, Currently being shot under strict COVID restrictions, the storyline spotlights the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island and First Nations Pacific Island youth.

Aged between 12-21 years, they have been supplied with equipment and are filming their own scenes with support of director Oriel Guthrie and other creatives from Melbourne via live video chat.

Uncle Kutcha Edwards, proud Matti Matti man has recorded the film's opening track, with Denise Scott, Stephen Curry, Nazeem Hussain and Steph Tisdell also involved in the project.

Stories Beneath the Vale is the story of a young Aboriginal dancer and choreographer Annette, played by Emily Egan, finding power within her art and her relationships and speaking up when it matters.

"Community organisations, leaders and Elders in Robinvale had identified their young people as being at increased risk of social isolation, education and work disengagement and bullying both online and offline," said Veltre.

“As we were about to embark on pilot filming, COVID-19 hit. During this time of uncertainty, disruption and social restrictions, it was impossible to continue the project as originally planned, but the need for young people in rural Victoria to connect to culture and to experience creative health and wellbeing activities were more important than ever.”

Together with the project participants, narratives and scripts have been adapted to reflect the current challenging circumstances as well as the creative process with the Director, Choreographers, Sound Designer and other artists, connecting and collaborating online.

Laid out over five episodes, the miniseries features original local music.

Stories Beneath the Vale pilot episode will premiere online in late September and it is hoped a further four episodes will be shot in the near future when normal filming can recommence.

■ Highly respected Melbourne theatre identity Tom Travers passed away peacefully, aged 93, at the Parkview Aged Care home in Malvern.

Tom was farewelled this week in a funeral service viewed on Zoom by his many theatre friends.

Regarded by all who knew him as "a true gentleman", Tom was the Victorian Drama League's longest standing and continuous member, having attended the 'constituent meeting' held at the South Melbourne Town Hall on Saturday, May 3, 1952, which saw the election of the first council of the League.

In November, 1952 at the League's inaugural One Act Play Festival, Tom was awarded the Best ActorAward for his role as Dicky Bach Owl in Birds of a Feather, presented by The Therry Society.

VDL Treasurer Deborah Fabbro writes in her tribute to Tom that he held the office of VDL Treasurer from 1959 to 1966, and continued to regularly visit the Library until recently, hiring a selection of scripts to peruse, and entertaining the library volunteers with his theatrical stories.

Deborah also notes that as well as a skilled actor, Tom was also a playwright, penning two plays which are part of the VDL's play catalogue.

His first play, Spare Me Bloomin' Days, a stage adaptation of the larrikin verses of C.J. Dennis aka The Sentimental Bloke, was first presented at Malvern Theatre Company in 1992. He also wrote The Song is You about his favourite composer Jerome Kern.

In February, 2017 when Tom attended Beaumaris Theatre intending to perform in a fund-raising concert, he was instead surprised by a large gathering of theatre friends and family celebrating his 90th Birthday.

Dorothy Parker on TV ■ Theatre friends of Dorothy Parker were thrilled to see her appear on Channel 7's breakfast show Sunrise in a segment presented by weather presenter Sam Mac. A veteran entertainer of over 50 years, Dot talked about her role of Frau Schmidt in The Sound of Music, and entertained with a few bars of song.

Dot explained later that on the day she was scheduled to appear on Zoom at 7am, and kept waking up during the night every couple of hours to ensure getting up at 5.45am to do her hair and make-up.

Sunrise sent Dot the Zoom link, all worked well and now she proudly feels tech savvy.

Dot is even celebrating her birthday on Zoom this week with her family who live interstate, overseas and in Melbourne.

Dot has performed for more than half a century in professional and non-professional musical theatre shows, cabaret, theatre restaurants and television.

As well as performing principal roles such as Dolly Levi in Hello Dolly!, Mrs Strakosh (Funny Girl) and Madame Thenardier in Les Misérables, Dot's versatile theatrical talents include costume design, wigs, hair and make-up.

Dot says this is the first year that she has not been involved in some form of theatre, both on or backstage, and doing pro gigs in clubs and pubs, stand up comedy and singing.

"I feel that my life is at a standstill", says Dot. "However, I have been writing down memories of my life, and if I can type properly, I plan

● Dr Anita Collins ■ During the time of COVID-19, many parents with children learning music may be wondering if it's really worth it.

According to groundbreaking music educator Dr Anita Collins, the answer is a resounding yes.

In her new book being released on September 1, The Music Advantage, Dr Collins draws on the latest international neurological research to prove the extraordinary benefits of children learning music.

While Dr Collins's name may not be a household one, she wrote and appeared on the ABC series, Don't Stop The Music, fronted

by Australian singer-songwriter Guy Sebastian.

The Music Advantage explores how learning music helps a child's brain and well being, a fact supported by high profile musicians like composer of Matilda The Musical, Tim Minchin, and Choir of Hard Knocks founder, Jonathon Welch.

"There was an indigenous kid whose attendance rate (at school) was 25 per cent.

We stuck an instrument in his hand suddenly he had purpose, he was gaining encouragement, and his attendance went up to 85 per cent," recalled Guy. But what about that perennial problem for parents of a child learning music, the lack of motivation to practise? Dr Collins sympathises but reassures parents that it's worth sticking with it.

"As a young musician's parent, I understand the frustration of paying every week for music lessons, and in some weeks, feeling like the only time my child plays is in her lesson, she said.

But as a music educator, Dr Collins said that a 30-minute lesson a week at the age of seven really improves all kinds of brain processes, and has a really positive impact on language skills as well.

"The brain development research has found that music learning is cognitively beneficial far beyond the music concerts and exams. Learning music is not a linear progression - it goes up and down with breakthroughs and plateaus."

So for harried parents of young music students, the message is to stick with it for the terrific brain development it will give your youngster.

■ The first two projects from a new series of digital commissions launch this week via ACCA's new artonline platform.

Announced in April, ACCA Open was conceived as a way for ACCA to continue to support contemporary artists and will engage with online audiences during COVID-19 related gallery closures. Australian artists from all backgrounds, career levels and practices were invited to submit ideas for projects that could be presented through digital platforms.

Six projects were selected from over 340 submissions the first two of which was launched the week of August 17 - August 21.

How Much Time Do We Have? by artists Madeleine Flynn and Tim Humphrey An ever-evolving, live-generated visual piece of breaks, flows, segments, junctures and shifts made during the timeless state of the present evernow, How Much Time Do We Have? is a site-specific and time-based work made in the midst of a global pandemic.

Broadcast precariously from a single computer located at the artist's studio, the work will eventually fade from view when Stage 4 restrictions are lifted in Melbourne. This recent event provides a finite - if unpredictable - duration for a work that creates space for audiences to experience both alone, and in connection with others, in a virtual sphere, at a time when our physical worlds are limited.

This is a collaboration between artist and choreographer Amrita Hepi and writer, neuroscientist and psychiatrist Sam Lieblich.

It took place on the last day that more than five people were permitted to gather at a private residence.

At a glittering function Robert was presented his award from Ramada Managing Director Alan Johnson.

Not only was Robert celebrated, but the Australian director Rod Hardy was also celebrated and recognised with his vast body of work from directing the early Homicide and Division 4 shows to Battlestar Galactica, The X-Files, Leverage and Burn Notice. Two very fine Australians doing incredible work both in Australia and around the world.

Remembering an icon ■ Marilyn Monroe was an American actress, model, and singer. Famous for playing comedic "blonde bombshell" characters, she became one of the most popular sex symbols of the 1950s and early 1960s and was emblematic of the era's changing attitudes towards sexuality.

Marilyn died 58 years ago and her legend still lives to this day. On August 5, 1962, the movie actress was found dead in her home in Los Angeles. She was discovered lying nude on her bed, face down, with a telephone in one hand.

Empty bottles of pills, prescribed to treat her depression, were littered around the room. After a brief investigation, Los Angeles Police concluded that her death was "caused by a self-administered overdose of sedative drugs and that the mode of death is probable suicide."

Marilyn Monroe was born Norma Jeane Mortenson in Los Angeles on June 1, 1926.

Decades after her death, Marilyn Monroe remains a major cultural icon.

77 Sunset Strip ■ In the summer of 1958, Dean Martin and his business partner, Maury Samuels, bought a former restaurant called The Alpine Lodge.

Dean Martin's real-life restaurant, located at 8524 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, was featured in the TV series 77 Sunset Strip. The show's character 'Kookie', played by Ed Byrnes, was a pseudo-hipster working as a valet at Dino's.

The 1950s show was filmed entirely on the Warner Brothers lot, but the opening 30-second sequence was filmed in front of Dino's Lodge.

Survey Says ...

■ Eighty-one percent of black Americans said they would prefer if police spend the same amount of time or more time in their neighborhoods, according to a Gallup survey. The survey, which also includes responses from other racial and ethnic groups, indicates that 20% of black respondents said they want an increased police presence, 61% want the same presence, and 19% want less. The support for current policing levels was fairly consistent across racial lines, with an average of 67% of Americans saying the current level of time police spend in their area is adequate. Asian American respondents expressed the greatest preference for decreasing police presence, with 28% favoring this option, the survey shows.

When asked how frequently they interact with police, 32% of black respondents said very often or often, compared with 28% of Hispanic respondents, 22% of white respondents, and 21% of Asian respondents, according to Gallup. Among black respondents 39%, said that they were not too confident or not at all confident of receiving positive treatment, compared with 22% of Hispanic respondents, 22% of Asian respondents, and 9% of white respondents. The survey is part of the Gallup Center on Black Voices, which is "devoted to studying and highlighting the experiences of more than 40 million Black Americans: tracking and reporting on progress on life outcomes and a life well-lived."

■ In 1966, Helen Reddy arrived in New York with her threeyear-old daughter, a suitcase and $230 in her pocket.

She had been told she'd won a recording contract, but the record company promptly dashed her hopes by telling her it has enough female stars and suggests she has fun in New York before returning home toAustralia.

Helen, without a visa, decides to stay in New York anyway and pursue a singing career, struggling to make ends meet and provide for her daughter.

There she befriended legendary rock journalist Lillian Roxon, who becomes her closest confident.

Lillian inspires her to write and sing the iconic song I Am Woman along with Australian singer-songwriter Ray Burton which became the anthem for the second wave feminist movement and galvanised a generation of women to fight for change.

She also met Jeff Wald, a young aspiring talent manager who becomes her agent and husband.

Jeff helps her get to the top, but he also suffers from a drug addiction, which gradually turns their relationship toxic.

Helen moved from New York and stayed at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites before settling into Los Angeles.

Caught up in the treadmill of fame and dependent on Jeff to manage her professional life, Helen found the strength to take control of her own career and keep pursuing her dreams.

The biopic debuted on Stan this week.

■ August marks 75 years since the US dropped the world's first deployed atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima.

It killed 80,000 people immediately and tens of thousands more in the aftermath.

The US dropped another atomic bomb on Nagasaki three days later, Aug. 9.

OnAug. 15, Japanese Emperor Hirohito announced his country's unconditional surrender for WWII. Some 75 years later global non-proliferation efforts are "In jeopardy." Russia and the US, which account for 90 per cent of the world's nuclear arsenal, are modernising their programs, and the New Start Treaty focused on arms reduction is teetering on the brink of failure.

US won’t listen to Gates ■ Bill Gates continued his unbridled criticism of the United States' response to the coronavirus pandemic on Sunday, calling America's testing system "insanity" and stressing that the country was now facing "a pretty dramatic price" both in human death and wasted money.

Gates said it takes far too long to receive coronavirus test results in the US. "You can't get the federal government to improve the testing because they just want to say how great it is," the Microsoft co-founder-turned-philanthropist said.

"I've said to them, look, have a CDC website that prioritizes who gets tested. That's trivial to do.

“They won't pay attention to that. I've said don't reimburse any tests where the result goes back after three days. You're paying billions of dollars in this very inequitable way to get the most worthless test results of any country in the world."

On the topic of America's lockdowns, Gates pointed to countries in the European Union that faced the Coronavirus outbreak earlier than the US and instituted more coordinated lockdowns.

"What's impressive is that Italy, France, Spain, who had a wave before us, managed as they fell off to keep even the parts of the country that hadn't had the intense epidemic from creating a second wave," Gates said.

"In the case of the United States, they opened up their bars. They didn't do much in the way of wearing masks.

“And so those areas became this second wave," he added.

Gates has pledged $1.6 billion to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation, with $100 million going towards coronavirus vaccines.

Most recently, he argued that the CDC's COVID-19 response was "muzzled" by a White House that refused to offer proper leadership during a time of crisis.

■ Whenever you mention the name Alan Jones these days people immediately think of the Australian radio broadcaster on 2GB. But there was a famous American singer and film star during the Golden Days of Hollywood who had a hit with a song called The Donkey Serenade in 1937.

Allan Jones was born Theodore Allen Jones in Pennsylvania in 1907.

He worked with his father in the coal mines until the age of 26 when he won a University Scholarship to study music.

Allan received classical training and got sing in several Broadway musicals before breaking into films with a small singing role in the Jean Harlow MGM film Reckless in 1935.

Allan was noticed by the studio and cast in the Marx Brothers film A Night at the Opera where he sang two songs Alone and Cosi - Cosa.

In the 1936 version of Showboat, Allan Jones played ‘Gaylord Ravenal’ opposite the beautiful Irene Dunne. I think this black-and-white classic is the best film version of Showboat.

During the making of The Great Ziegfeld, Dennis Morgan mimed the voice of Allan Jones singing A Pretty Girl is Like a Melody in a big musical production number as he walked down a huge wedding cake.

In 1937 Allan was cast in another Marx Brothers film A Day at the Races. He had a small role as the opera singer in Rosemarie and loved working with Jeanette McDonald.

His next film with MGM was Everybody Sing and Allan coached a very young Judy Garland in some of her scenes.

In The Firefly, Allan was once again cast opposite Jeanette McDonald and sang Rudolf Friml's composition The Donkey Serenade which was to become his signature tune.

Allan played the leading role in The Boys from Syracuse in 1940. His next film was A Night in the Tropics and this film had a disastrous effect on his film career. Allan and Robert Cummings were the two leads but the director was keen to introduce two new comedians called Abbott and Costello.

The comedy team were only supposed to do one sketch in the film but they were so good

● Allan Jones their roles were increased and Allan's role was reduced. Although Allan still appeared in films his career waned over the next five years.

During the war years Allan was one of the first entertainers to volunteer to sing for the troops overseas. He returned to the stage in Great Britain and then toured the US with several offBroadway musicals.

Over the next 20 years Allan worked the nightclub circuit. In the early 1950s he appeared at the Tivoli Theatre in Melbourne and was a guest star on radio shows such as Australia's Hour of Song.

Allan was married four times and had two children. His son Jack Jones became a very successful singer and sings the theme song for the television series The Love Boat.

Allan Jones was a guest star in television shows such as 77 Sunset Strip and The Love Boat.

During the 1970s Allan played the role of Don Quixote in stage productions of Man of La Mancha.

I met Allan Jones and recorded several radio interviews with him when he was here in Melbourne in 1991 for a concert at the Melbourne Town Hall.

Shortly after the Melbourne visit Allan Jones passed away of lung cancer at the age of 84 After all these years I still enjoy listening to his version of The Donkey Serenade.

OK. With John O’Keefe Burnso wins lottery ■ In a tell- all podcast interview the recently retired 3AW joint Breakfast presenter John Burns revealed how in 1989 he won $800,000 (tax free) in a local lottery.

At the time Burnso was a solicitor and overnight his lifestyle changed.

He paid off a rather large tax bill, finalised his mortgage, purchased a new car and went skiing at Aspen.

Soon after the windfall he joined 3AW and the rest is history. During his farewell speech Burnso said “I’m the luckiest man alive” and no truer words have been spoken.

Couterfeit crook

■ In the UK the bobbies have caught up with one of the largest counterfeiters of pirate records.

In real life the syndicate posed as motor dealers but in reality were arranging duplication and sales of pop CDs featuring most of the big names in showbiz .

Chief pirate was fined £464,000 and given 18 months in the slammer.

This incident is dinki-di although we do admit it sounds like an episode of Minder with Arthur and Terry.

Naughty dog, Bluey

■ Ask any pre-school youngster about the ABC animated serial Bluey and you’ll get the thumbs up. He’s a real favourite, but of late Bluey has got a bit naughty using the word ‘oonga boonga’.

Censors at ABC thought those words could sound racist against the indigenous communities and poor old Bluey had to delete the offending words .

■ Next time you’re in London, and it won’t be for awhile , make a point of checking out the new attraction at number 9 Carnaby Street.

The address houses the flagship House of the Rolling Stones – a retail store selling authentic Stones memorabilia, music, fashions, furniture and more. If you do drop into the store you might catch a glimpse of Mike or Keith doing a stretch counting stock.

Sound effects

■ Recording engineers are often put to the test when tracks are being laid.

Creativity is sometimes the name of the game, like the multi sounds required way back in 1962 when the industry was pretty raw, never the less engineers experimented. I n recording the international No 1 Telstar guitar instrumental they needed the sound of a space rocket –nothing available, so they flushed the toilet and it sounded just like the real thing.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs FILM: THE CURRENT WAR (GOOGLE-Play/AppleTV): Genre: Biography/Drama/History.

Cast: Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Shannon, Nicholas Hoult, Katherine Waterston.

Year: 2017.

Rating: M/ Length: 108 Minutes.

Stars: ***½ Review: The dramatic story of the cutthroat race between electricity titans Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla to determine whose electrical system would power the modern world.

Fascinating, engaging and well made historical drama may be a little soft around the edges, but is nonetheless an extremely solid and stylish portrait of the 19th century titans of power, a revealing and at times startling personal and professional 'no-holds-barred' battle of rivals that would change the world forever, an intellectually stimulating history lesson that doesn't take sides as it slices through the unrelenting ambition, arrogance and greed to ultimately fulfil a then almost impossible goal.

Not too unlike his Oscar nominated performance as mathematician Alan Turing in "The Imitation Game" (2014), Benedict Cumberbatch streams seamlessly through his role as Thomas Alva Edison with all the professionalism and warts-and-all realism you would expect, however, it is Michael Shannon as rival George Westinghouse that gives the overall proceedings devilish bite, both aided superbly by Nicholas Hoult as Nikola Tesla, Matthew Macfadyen as J.P. Morgan, Tuppence Middleton as Mary Edison, Katherine Waterston as Marguerite Westinghouse and Tom Holland as young innovator and investor Samuel Insull.

With taut and respectful direction by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, graceful and at times striking Cinematography by Chung-hoon-Chung/Old Boy/Stoker), along with superb period detail: production design, set and costume design, and even though it is not without its flaws, this is ultimately a gripping, at times humorous, brutal, ambiguous, educational and ultimately rewarding experience that will cause you to never look at our every day electric light the same way again.

FILM: THE TURNING (Now Streaming on AppleTV & Google Play): Genre: Drama/Horror/Mystery.

Cast: Mackenzie Davis, Finn Wolfhard, Brooklyn Prince, Barbara Marten.

Year: 2013.

Rating: M. Length: 94 Minutes.

Stars: * Verdict: A young governess is hired by a man who has become responsible for his young nephew and niece after their parents' deaths.

Diabolically tiresome and obtuse retread of the oft filmed classic and chilling story from the Henry James novella "The Turn of the Screw," all reduced here to a present day fright-fest that has absolutely nothing new in relation to respectability or originality of its source material, a formulaic, by-the-book pot-boiler almost completely constructed on cliché, from the eerily isolated location, creaking doors, locked and isolated rooms, mysterious cries and sounds in the night and inexplicable things running amuck in the night, all the Hollywood horror cook book of cliché of things that go bump in the night is in there, most notably "The Shining," "The Changeling" and 1963's "The Haunting," to name a few.

As I mentioned above this has been filmed numerous times, far too many to mention, but absolutely none compare to Jack Clayton's brilliant five-star gothic 1961 masterpiece "The Innocents" starring Deborah Kerr, Pamela Franklin, Martin Stephens, Megs Jenkins, Peter Wyngarde and Michael Redgrave, an unequalled, hugely intelligent, nail-biting and heart-stopping ghost story filmed with startling realization by legendary cinematographer Freddie Francis (The Elephant Man), a psychological master-class in fear and filmmaking that is revered to many as, along with Robert Wise's 1963 classic "The Haunting," as the greatest cinematic work of the horror genre.

No one obviously saw "The Innocents" before embarking on this mess, the direction is flat, performances wooden, respect for the original source material and classic film nil, and shocks boringly clichéd and repetitive, most notably from nightmares, an overall effort that makes 2018's diabolically dreadful "The Nun" look like the Oscar winning classic "The Exorcist" by comparison, however, there is one bright and shining light in this darkly murky mishmash, and that is Jack Clayton's "The Innocence," a must-see classic well worth your time chasing after, at any cost.

Rourke’s Reviews The Realm ■ (M). 126 minutes. Now streaming on SBS On Demand.

Excellent political thrillers are a rare bird these days, and thanks to SBS On Demand, we can see The Realm, one of the best examples to come our way in recent years.

Via a very effective long take, we are introduced to Manuel Lopez Vidal (Antonio de la Torre), a regional vice-secretary for a prominent, incumbent Spanish political party.

Highly ambitious, Manuel's aggressive groundwork has paid off as he is announced as successor to regional president Frias (Jose Maria Pou), but during these opening sequences, it quickly becomes apparent that everyone on screen is corrupt, living the high life on not only the taxpayer's dollar, but also through bribes, illegal tenders, and real estate fraud.

When one of their close-knit group is arrested for money laundering, and a recording of Manuel talking about a certain illicit deal makes the news, it sets off a cataclysmic series of events that sees the once-rising star's professional and private life spiral downwards.

As he finds himself cut off from his so-called colleagues, Manuel desperately tries to find evidence that will see everyone involved tainted and indicted, but as he digs deeper, he finds his life in increasing danger.

The Realm hits the ground running, with names, faces, and deals thrust at the audience, and it is a swirl of information that requires concentration to sift through.

However this is exactly what cowriter Isabel Pena and co-writer/ director Rodrigo Sorogoyen want, to make our heads giddy with power, play, and possibilities, where politicians can write their own rules, and extract money and profits any way they see fit.

Sorogoyen and Pena have successfully worked together before, on the excellent police thriller May God Save Us (2016), the romantic drama Stockholm (2013), and the TV series Fragiles (2013), and once again they hit a bullseye here.

The two manage the tricky feat of making us become involved in Manuel's plight, even though he is clearly his own worst enemy, engaging in morally bankrupt behaviour that has put him in this position in the first place.

Commanding the screen is de la Torre, who is superb as Manuel, allowing the visceral storytelling to attain some added layers.

This wonderful actor is in top form (as he was in the highly recommended May God Save Us, The Fury Of A Patient Man, and Cannibal), and is backed up by a first-

Aaron Rourke rates the movies rate supporting cast. Praise must also go to a world-class technical crew, especially cinematographer Alejandro de Pablo (who shot the director's Oscar nominated short Madre and it's feature film remake) and regular editor Alberto del Campo.

The Realm makes for terrific viewing, and is compelling right through to its impactful and incisive final scene.

Psychokinesis ■ (M). 101 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

After making a huge splash with his 2016 worldwide smash Train To Busan (his highly anticipated follow-up, Peninsula, was recently released to mixed reactions), writer/ director Yeon Sang-ho (who also helmed the animated features The King Of Pigs, The Fake, and Seoul Station) returned with Psychokinesis, and while its satirical elements surprised some fans of the filmmaker, most were royally entertained by his astute mixing of the fantastical with pointed social commentary.

Ryoo Seung-ryong plays Sukhun, a slovenly middle-aged man who works as a bank security guard, whose life is turned upside down when he inadvertently attains the power to move inanimate objects.

This happens at the same time he receives a call from his estranged, grown-up daughter Roo-mi (Shim Eun-kyung), a restaurant owner who, along with other business owners, is being strong-armed by a locally hired crew to move out of the neighbourhood, so a Chinese corporation can expand their influence on Korean soil (this subplot appears to criticise China's imposing Belt-And-Road scheme).

Sang-ho initially uses his newly gained abilities for his own personal gain, but once he sees what his daughter and fellow neighbours are going through, decides to put their needs ahead of his own.

Yeon effectively blends fantasy, comedy, action, and drama in telling a story that is certainly relevant, while also exploring past crimes committed by both the police and government.

Performances are first-rate, while the special effects are convincing and at-times eye-popping.

I must admit that I initially thought of 375ml bottles rather than these of the normal 750ml volume when I heard of Jacob's Creek's new Better by Half brand.

But I was wrong. The 'half' in the name refers to principally to alcohol level rather than bottle size and the good news for serious weight-watchers is that the wines also carry half the normal calories.

I don't normally review loweralcohol wines because I find them a bit thin and lacking in flavour, but these are pretty good even if I wouldn't drink them out of choice.

So here they are: WINE REVIEWS Jacob's Creek 2019 Better by Half Pinot Grigio ($22): As these aren't necessarily my favourite wines I'll leave the comments largely to the winemaker's notes. Victorian racing awards live

■ It is great news that Racing Victoria and Racing.Com are combining to bring racing fans all the popular Horse Racing Awards tonight (Wed.)at 7.30pm.

It will be hosted by one of the best on air, in Jason Richardson, accompanied by Grace Ramage, who does a good job regularly on Racing.Com. It will be presented live and free-to-air, by the pair.

The special broadcast will feature 13 awards, highlighted by the Scobie Breasley Medal for the leading jockey, the Victorian Racehorse of the YearAward, and the Fred Hoysted Award for the leading trainer.

The dedicated 90-minute show will be broadcast free-to-air on Channels 68 and 78, on Foxtel Channel 529, and streamed live via the Racing.

Com digital platforms.

With a physical event not possible, due to the impacts of COVID-19, the broadcast enables all within the industry to celebrate the successes of the 2019-20 racing Season from their comforts of home, with all award winners interviewed by the Racing. Com team on the night.

Industry participants are being encouraged to dress for the occasion, and engage with the broadcast by posting images of their 'At Home' celebration to social media with the hashtag #vicracingawards.

The 13 awards presented on the night are summarised as follows: ■ The Scobie Breasley Medal, which recognises excellence in riding during the Metropolitan flat racing season as voted by the panel of RV stewards throughout the 2019-20 season.

■ The Victorian Racehorse of the YearAward, which recognises the most outstanding racehorse on Victorian tracks during the 2019-20 racing season, irrespective of where the horse is trained.

Voting is open to a selected group consisting of Victorian media, race callers, members of RV's Handicapping Panel, and the Chairman of Stewards.

■ The Fred Hoysted Medal recognises a Victorian based trainer, who has demonstrated excellence in 2019-20 season.

The recipient of this award is judged by a panel of industry and media representatives, taking into consideration their performances on the track and their overall contribution to the Industry.

■ The ColinAlderson Award,which recognises a Victorian based trainer with no more than seven racing seasons' experience, who has performed with distinction over the previous 12 months.

The recipient of the award, who is determined by a panel of industry and media representatives, must be no older that 40 years of age at the conclusion of the racing season, and may be judged on their performances anywhere in the world, throughout the 2019/20 racing season.

■ The Tommy Corrigan Medal, awarded to the leading jumps jockey of the season in Victoria and South Australia, as voted by the RV and Thoroughbred Racing South Australia Stewards.

Racing changes

■ Racing Victoria has made a few changes to the country racing calendar due to the COVID 19 pandemic.

The protocols which are developed in accordance with all Government directives, guidelines and advice, serve to protect the health of industry staff, participants and the wider community.

Jockey restrictions

■ Racing Victoria have advised that Victorian jockeys will only be able to attend one meeting per day.

This constraint will remain in place until at least the scheduled end of Victorian Government's Stage 4 restrictions on September 13, and will be reviewed again prior to the commencement of the night racing season in late September.

Meetings axed

■ Following consultation with Country Racing Victoria, three non-TAB country meetings have been cancelled in the first half of October.

These will include the Gunbower Cup meeting on October 3, the Manangatang Cup meeting on October 10 and the Wodonga meeting on October 17.

Bendigo success ■ Bendigo raced on Tuesday and Romsey based trainer/driver Chris Svanosio returned to his former home to land the 2150 metre Bendigo Power Coating 2Y0 Trotters Handicap with Whos The Man, a gelded son of Angus Hall and Oh Yes Indeed. Bred and raced by the MacLean Family Group, Who The Man began swiftly from 10 metres, going forward to take over just after the post on the first occasion before surrendering to Keayang Kena shortly after.

Enjoying a lovely passage, Whos The Man used the sprint lane on turning to register an impressive 2.1 metre margin from the leader in 203.3. Sunsup (three back the markers) was third 5.9 metres away.

■ Smythes Creek trainer Nathan Cahir who a few years back represented Victoria in a junior drivers series, was successful with Nai Harn Bay, a gelded son of Somebeachsomewhere and Bring Her Back in the Alabar Bloodstock 3Y0 Maiden Pace over 1650 metres.

Ballarat bulletin ■ Wednesday was double day with Ballarat racing in the afternoon and Shepparton at night.

Stawell (Glenorchy) owner/trainer Greg Cooper was in the winners stall at Ballarat when 5Y0 Grinfromeartoear-It Is What It Is gelding Local Icon (Grant Campbell) led throughout from gate four to land the John Valves Pace over 2200 metres.

Coming off a third a week earlier at Stawell, Local Icon was always travelling under a tight rein, greeting the judge 10.8 metres in advance of Kiedis which trailed and Cruising Bellew which followed the pair finishing 10.8 metres away. The mile rate 2-02.

■ Terang duo Mattie Craven (trainer) and Sophia Arvidsson (driver) scored a most impressive victory with 3Y0 Muscle Hill-Solar Powered filly Aldebaran Tess against her older rivals in the Mega Jumps Trotters Mobile over 2200 metres and in doing so, brought up three wins in succession.

Bred and raced by Duncan McPherson's Aldebaran Lodge Pty Ltd, Aldebaran Tess was slow to muster speed from gate four finding herself three wide going back through the field as The Girls Got Flair began fast to lead from gate six.

Going forward once balanced to park outside the leader, Aldebaran Tess applied plenty of pressure approaching the home turn before racing clear on turning to record a 11.2 metre margin from Strazeele (one/three - three wide last lap) to return a mile rate of 2-01.8. The Girls Got Flair held down third 1.7 metres back.

Settling mid-field in the moving line after starting from gate two on the second line, Glenn sent Querencia forward three wide in the final circuit and finished full of running to easily account for Sahahleonie Bow (four wide home turn) after following him home, with Charlie Walker 1.3 metres away in third place after trailing the pair. The mile rate 2-04.4.

■ Chris Alford had a day out at Ballarat after landing three winners on the program - Goober for wife Alison in the Drever Signs 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile, Execution Oro (Emma Steward) the Durham Park 3Y0 Pace and El Boston for Kelvin Barker (Mitchell Park) the Plover Security Pace.

Travelling boldly in the lead from gate five for David Moran, Hesty bounded away from his rivals on the home turn to record a huge 37.7 metre margin in a rate of 2-00.3 from Chiquitta (four back the markers) and Lilbitahenrytee which trailed the winner finishing a nose in arrears of the runner up.

■ Local trainer/driver Stephen Boyington was victorious with Lester, a gelded son of Hes Watching and Desiring Bella in the 2190 metre Alabar 2Y0 Maiden Pace.

Enjoying a cosy passage from gate three on the back of the poleline leader Sargeant Major, Lester eased away from the inside in the last lap to race exposed and ran home best to prevail by a head from Smooth Rolling from the tail after gaining a late split halfway up the running.

Starting from inside the ten metre line, Heres To You Jimmy possied three back in the moving line as polemarker Mystic Chip led. Going forward three wide solo in the last lap, Heres To You Jimmy ran home stylishly to defeat the pacemaker by 4.1 metres, with The Majestic 1.8 metres away in third place after trailing the runner up.

■ Charlton's Mark Boyle snared the Your Sold Real Estate Pace over 1690 metres with 4Y0 Bettors Delight-My Perogative gelding Gotonebettor in a rate of 2-02.7. With Greg Sugars in the sulky, Gotonebettor was driven hard from gate two to cross Not So Big on his inside as the start was effected and was given little peace by Caesar Moon on his outside for most of the trip.

Stepping cleanly from 10 metres, Sofia immediately headed for the markers to settle four back as polemarker Eoghan Omailee led and the hot favourite Keayang Livana galloped away losing valuable ground to settle at the tail with the exception of The Penny Drops which missed away badly and was tailed off.
