■ The first Council to capitulate to the State Government’s North-East Link project has been Manningham. And local government sources believe that other north-east and eastern municipalities will soon follow. Manningham Council walked away from the Supreme Court fight against the State Government after being offered ‘sweeteners’. These involve commitments for more open space, environmental safeguards and cash for local sports clubs. Observers believe that three other Councils - Boroondara, Whitehorse and Banyule - will also withdraw from the expensive legal action, in return for concessions. A three-day legal case, which could cost millions of ratepayer dollars, is due in court in September. Work has already commenced on the North-East Link which will extend from Greensborough, and connect with the Eastern Freeway at Bulleen. Manningham Council had earlier said it was concerned about community outcomes.
