“One of [the] cases is a general practitioner who worked for several hours at three medical practices while potentially infectious,” said a Department of Health spokesman.

“The doctor did not have any symptoms at the time and went into isolation immediately upon being informed they were a close contact of a confirmed case.

“The GP worked at Lilydale Medical Clinic on June 11 (Thurs.) and Cedars Medical Clinic in Coburg and Croydon Family Practice on June 9 (Tues.).

“All sites are being appropriately cleaned.

The Department is contacting all potentially affected patients. As the doctor is asymptomatic, the risk of transmission is low, however if anyone is experiencing any symptoms they should get tested and self-isolate.”

To date, 19 people have died from coronavirus in Victoria.

There have been 182 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Victoria that have been acquired through unknown transmission. There are currently 47 active cases in Victoria.

Local Briefs Bulleen boost

■ A Bulleen company is set to gain from the construction of the North East Link, the Legislative Council has been told.

Construction of five land bridges over the North East Link between Grimshaw St and Lower Plenty Rd in Watsonia will create approximately 8500 square metres of green public open space, and more than 30 000 trees will be planted as part of the project,” Sonja Terpstra, MLC for Eastern Metropolitan Region (Labor), told Parliament this month.

“Local business BulleenArt & Garden is going to be one of those businesses providing some of the trees for that project, and for every tree that is removed two will be replaced,” Ms Terpstra said.

Channel 31 move

■ Rodney Barton, Eastern Metropolitan MLC (Transport Matters), is concerned about the future of community television station Channel 31.

“My question is for the Minister for Creative Industries (Martin Foley) and is an appeal for him to intervene and save the broadcasting licence for Channel 31.

“This valuable community service will be replaced with white noise from June 30 if we are unable to secure an ongoing licence.

“There are no other issues for this broadcast spectrum at this stage. Channel 31 gives a voice to multicultural communities, promotes local tourism through its hunting, fishing and four-wheel drive programming and provides work experience for our film and broadcasting students.

■ Sonja Terpstra, Eastern Metropolitan MLC (Labor), has praised the Andrews Labor Government investment in free technical and further education..

“Free TAFE started in 2019 to train up Victorians for jobs in priority areas,” Ms Terpstra told the Legislative Council this month.

“The report card is out, and free TAFE has been an overwhelming success. Across Victoria there has been an 88 per cent increase in enrolments in free TAFE courses compared with 2018.

“I am pleased to report that at Swinburne University of Technology, including the Croydon campus, there has been a 227 per cent increase in commencement—one of the biggest growths of all TAFEs across Victoria—and this is outstanding.

“The top three courses are the diploma of accounting and bookkeeping, the diploma of nursing and the diploma of community services, and of course those areas are very important to ensure that we have a continued supply of appropriately trained people in those workforces that take care of Victorians in our health services.

“Other fantastic increases in free TAFE at Swinburne include a 253 per cent increase in people with a disability being able to access courses, a 261 per cent increase in women, a 251 per cent increase in the number of culturally and linguistically diverse students and a 197 per cent increase in the number of people who were unemployed.

“Free TAFE has meant that students who would otherwise never be able to access TAFE can access training for jobs. Free TAFE is back in 2020, and we are training more Victorians than ever,” Ms Terpstra said.

Family violence

■ Eastern suburbs family violence has been raised in State Parliament by Eastern Metropolitan MLC Dr Matthew Bach (Liberal).

“We have been in relative isolation now for months, and that has sparked concerns across the community in particular about the wellbeing of vulnerable women and children at risk of family violence,” Dr Bach said.

“For many vulnerable women and children in particular, the opportunity to get out of the house, whether it is simply to go shopping, perhaps to go to work, even to carry out domestic duties, can be an incredibly important opportunity to reach out for help and support.

“I was interested on a Zoom call recently with senior departmental officials who were briefing a standing committee of this place that they were very open that the current mechanisms put in place by the government are not working to enable vulnerable Victorians, predominantly women and children, to reach out and access the support that they need.

“In my electorate in particular there are numerous outstanding organisations that right now require additional support from the department.

here in Australia we also have a case to answer in terms of the way we treat people from multicultural backgrounds and indeed, as was raised in a notice of motion by Dr Ratnam, our own indigenous people.

“I stand with those Chinese Australians who have been on the front line as teachers, as nurses, as health workers and as people in our stores who have contributed so much to keeping us safe during this period of the pandemic, all the time copping abuse and racism along the way.

“In a message to our colleagues in America, and one that we all should take note of as well, can I just end by saying, ‘I can’t breathe’,” Mr Atkinson said

Madalena gets OK ■ A Box Hill North property will be permitted to proceed with revised plans for dual occpancy following a decision of the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal to set aside a Whitehorse Council decision.

Madalena Liu will be allowed to proceed with vegetation removal and the dual occupancy at 30 Olympiad C rescent, Box Hill North, after VCAT Senior Member Philip Martin heard the matter on June 5, and determined the case last week.

● Cr Cynthia Watson ■ Question time at Boroondara Council on May 25, led by Mayor Cr Cynthia Watson, included an enquiry from Balwyn North resident Ian Hundley about confidentiality concerns about the North-East Link.

“Does Boroondara Council continue to be bound by a Memorandum of Understanding or any other instrument that would restrict the information it provides to the public on the proposed North East Link Project? If so please advise of the details,” Mr Hundley asked.

Daniel Freer, the Council’s Director of Environment and Infrastructure, replied: “The North East Link Project required all Councils impacted

by the North East Link to enter into a MoU and would not share information about the project until the MoU was executed.

“This included information about the impact of the project on Boroondara land, road network and our community.

“This agreement remains in place and Council continues to adhere to it,” Mr Freer said.

Legal centre help ■ Assistance for the Eastern Community Legal Centre has been discussed in the Legislative Assembly at the instigation of Eastern Metropolitan MLC Sonja Terpstra.

Her comments followed an announcement of $17.5 million additional funding for frontline legal assistance for community legal centres in Victoria.

“The Eastern Community Legal Centre in my region works with communities and community members living in Boroondara, Knox, Manningham, Maroondah, Whitehorse and Yarra Ranges.

“They do an amazing job for many of my local constituents by providing information, advice and assistance across a range of legal and related issues.

“My question to the minister is in regard to this recent announcement, and I specifically would like to know if the minister could advise what funding support will be provided to the Eastern Community Legal Centre arising from this recent announcement to continue to assist them in doing the excellent work that they do across my region,” Ms Terpstra said.

Box Hill residents need to be wary following reports of an ongoing ar rest warrant scam, warn Police. Investigators have received reports of residents being contacted by someone claiming to be from the Box Hill Police Station and asking for their tax file number. The victim is then told an arrest warrant is in existence and asks for the nearest police station to the victim. The local police station phone number is then cloned before a second offender calls the victim claiming to be from that station. Victims are then told to purchase gift cards and supply the card numbers and expiry dates to the scammer by communication apps.

A motorcycle travelling at 125kmh at Mulgrave evaded Police on Wednesday last week (June 10).

Officers from the Nunawading Highway Patrol are appealing for public assistance Police were patrolling Wellington Rd when they detected a light-coloured sports motorcycle travelling west n an 80 zone about 9am.

It is believed the motorcyclist stopped briefly at the intersection of Springvale Rd in the far-right lane before taking off through a red light and speeding south down the road.

$18m for Croydon school ■ The State Government’s $18.12 million investment to rebuild Croydon Community School has been raised this month in Parliament by Sonja Terpstra, Eastern Metropolitan MLC. “Croydon Community School is a small secondary school with the capacity to enrol about 100 students,” Ms Terpstra said.

“It is currently situated at a small site at Mount Dandenong Rd in Croydon. It also has another re-engagement site at Neal St, Bayswater, for young people between the ages of 12 and 17 who have disengaged from mainstream schooling.

“Quite simply, Croydon Community School saves lives. Many of these young people who choose to enrol at the school have not experienced learning success or a sense of connectedness to mainstream schools for a range of reasons.

“By fostering positive relationships between adults and young people, these children can come to flourish and rise to their own best potential.

“This is something that only our fantastic public education system here in Victoria can deliver, because our public education system caters for all and welcomes all.

“The teachers and staff at Croydon Community School are a highly experienced and passionate group of education professionals, and I am impressed and always will be by their dedication to educating children to strive to attain a solid education and to be the best they can be.

■ Manningham Council has launched a new creative industries program of small fellowships, workshops and mentoring opportunities, to help local artists develop new projects and to support them at this time.

Under the program, up to eight small fellowships of up to $2000 will be offered to contemporary artists to research and develop new bodies of work and art projects such as site-specific installations, non-gallery based exhibitions and performances.

New Wantirna aged centre ■ The new Wantirna residential aged care facility is a step closer to being built with the State Government commencing the tender phase to appoint a builder.

The 120-bed, multi-level state-of-the-art aged care facility will provide the best care for older Victorians and is designed to be dementia-friendly for residents with complex care needs.

Bayswater MLA Jackson Taylor says he is pleased to see this facility has moved one step closer to becoming a reality for our community.

“When complete it will allow our senior Victorians to live in the comfortable and supportive environment they deserve,” Mr Taylor said.

Residents will enjoy a more home-like environment with private rooms and ensuites, along with natural light and sweeping views over the Dandenong Ranges.

The facility will also include a community room, café, sacred space and other common areas designed to encourage social interactions between residents, staff, families and the community.

Located next to the existing Wantirna Health service, the facility will form part of the Wantirna Health Precinct, an integrated healthcare hub making it easier for aged care residents to access medical attention.

The Victorian Government expects to announce a builder in August , with the start of construction to soon follow. The facility is scheduled for completion by mid-2022.

■ With the NEastern Football League abandoning its 2020 season, there may be a focus swing to outer eastern clubs Yarra Glen, Powelltown, Yarra Junction and Warburton There is optimism that AFL Outer East Division 2 may announce an abbreviated 2020 season with seven home-and-away games, and three weeks of finals.

An announcement could come as early as the next week, with Victoria’s State of Emergency set to be reviewed on Monday (June 22).

AFL Outer East clubs are due to meet on Tuesday (June 23).

Club officials from around the region are keen to salvage what they can of the season, and have developed a plan where each of the nine Division 2 would play one game with each other during an seven-round faxture.

The Division 2 teams comprise Alexandra, Broadford, Kinglake, Powelltown, Warburton-Millgrove, Yarra Glen, Yarra

Junction and Yea. Thornton-Eildon will not field men’s senior football sides in 2020.

AFL Outer East has set July 25 as its preferred return date for all competitions.

This might have a scenario of games on Saturdays: July 25, August 7, 14, 21 and 28, September 5 and 12.

Finals might be played on the weekends of September 19-20, 26-27, and October 3-4.

Other arrangements would apply for the Premier League and Division 1 football competitions in the AFL Outer East. It is thought that the 2020 netball competitions might mirror the football fixtures.

An abbreviated season could be a welcome boost for the ‘northern’ Division 2 competition. Eastern and Northern football and netball leagues have already abandoned their 2020 competitions.

It is expected that some EFNL and NFNL players might seek to join teams in the AFL Outer East.

Marathon Man ■ Neville Emerson is 92, and shows no signs of slowing down.

He is one of those rare characters who was raised in Collingwood, and barracks for Richmond.

These days he is still in charge of a property consulting group that has a focus on the Diamond Valley and beyond.

However, over the years he and his family have run a rmoval van business from Abbotsford, the Oakhill Bakery at East Preston, and a real estate business with offices at East Ivanhoe, Bulleen and Lower Plenty.

Neville’s early professional life was with Caltex, selecting sites across Victoria for a network of service stations.

This progressed to his career in real estate, in the early years without a car or a telephone.

His work - first around Greensborugh and Eltham - often expanded into areas including what is now the Whittlesea and Murrindindi areas.

In the 1970s and 1980s he headed the large Emerson real estate agency based in Lower Plenty.

Interests crossed the Yarra, and there was also a strong focus in the growing Manningham areas that included Bulleen, Doncaster and Templestowe.

Neville’s communty work included being a co-founder of Eltham College, one of the original members of the Rotary Club of Eltham, and supporting the Salvation Army.

Neville Emerson has always been an innovative marketer.

His classic advertisements with linedrawings of homes set his client’s properties apart from others.

Neville is familyfocused. His wife Jean is a wonderful supporter; they spent their courting years at Saturday night dances at the Collingwood Town Hall.

Together, they have daughters Sheryl, Kate and Jan - who between them have more than 200 years of real estate experience.

It is not easy keeping pace with Neville.

At age 60, he ran three 43-km marathons.

In 2020, he heads Emerson National Property Consultants. He brings a rare energy to every project.

One of his interests is strata property management. Another is property leases.

Fruit Growers

■ At the invitation of the East Burwood Fruitgrowers Association, there was a large gathering at the annual social evening in the Mechanics' Institute, East Burwood, on Thursday last, and a highly delightful and profitable time was spent. Mr. F. W. Fankhauser, chairman, extended to all a very hearty welcome.

At Mont Albert ■ During the. last weeks numerous improvements have been carried out at the Mont Albert Methodist Church property.

The building itself has been painted and concrete paths laid down; a new tennis court has been formed; and the courts are being put into good playing order.

Box Hill death ■ The death occurred on Friday of Mr. Samuel Newbury at his residence in Thames street; Box Hill. Mr. Newbury had resided in Box Hill for nearly 15 years, prior to which he had lived in Geelong and South Melbourne.

Although he had been ailing for some weeks, the end was unexpected. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at the Box Hill cemetery when the Rev. R. Farrer conducted services at the house and at the open graveside.

‘Queer form’ ■ For three quarters Box Hill City gave the crudest exhibition of football at Abbotsford that it is possible to imagine. Nothing seemed to go right. and as is usual when a team is out of balance, even the bounce of the ball went against them. In the aerial work they were outclassed,and inaccurate passing and working into position, well, they never did.

Vermont Scouts ■ There was a big attendance at the scout dance on Saturday night to farewell Mr. and Mrs. Overton, who have been workers for the group. Durmg the evening Cr. Rose presented them with a petrol table lamp, and the scouts sang Down on Misery Farm.

Rooks Rd danger ■ The dangerous intersection where Dunlavin and Rooks Rds with major arterial Whitehorse Rd has been raised in Parliament this month by Eastern Metropolitan MLC Rod Barton (Transport Matters Party) “This is a dogleg intersection, where traffic and cyclists are required to turn right then left to cross the main road, but it is a key link between communities north and south of the main road and the rail line,” Mr Barton told the Legislative Council.

“It is the only option for local vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians, with the closest alternative crossing points 1.6 kilometres apart at Springvale and Mitcham Rds. “The Dunlavin intersection has no traffic lights, which makes it dangerous for motorists turning into or out of Dunlavin, and even more hazardous for pedestrians and cyclists attempting to cross there.

“The Rooks intersection is hazardous for pedestrians and right-turning vehicles from Rooks Rd, which often cut lanes to then turn left into Dunlavin Rd. “The intersection is a major flaw in the City of Whitehorse’s low-stress cycling network, which aims to encourage a potential cycling population of 110,000 residents to avoid the major arterials and to use safer routes.

“However, the nature of the current traffic flow at this intersection splits the pedestrian and cycling routes in two and discourages many people in the communities from walking or cycling in this area.

“The community has proposed a protected intersection plan similar to one currently being

Mr Barton said he had met with Whitehorse City Council and community representatives to discuss the intersection.

In the light of recent attacks against Asian Victorians, the Victorian Multicultural Commission is also working with the Victorian Human Rights Commission to raise awareness of how to respond and where to bring a complaint.

"We want to ensure that families in multicultural communities have the resources and essentials they need to get to get through this pandemic,” Mr Hamer said.

"We recognise that our multicultural communities have face particular challenges during this pandemic and that's why this support package is so important.

"We are proudly multicultural here in Victoria and proud of our multicultural and multi-faith communities.

“They deserve our support as we work together through the coronavirus pandemic.,” Mr Hamer said.

Push for Whitehorse SES HQ ■ A new State Emergency Services regional headquarters in the City of Whitehorse is being pushed by Bruce Atkinson, MLC for the Eastern Metropolitan Region (Liberal).

Paul Hamer, State Member for Box Hill, congratulated four locally based organisations - Sikh Welfare Council of Victoria Inc, Chinese Community Social Services Centre Inc, Chinese Women's Association of Victoria and the Sikh Interfaith Council Victoria - as successful recipients of funding under this program.

Each of these local community organisations will receive $4000 to help develop new and innovative ways to reconnect and support their respective communities, in line with coronavirus restrictions.

Next Knox meeting ■ The next Knox Council meeting is due to be held on Monday (June 22).

Recently, the Council has been urging members of the public not to attend.

“We are urging people not to physically attend Council meetings, but to view the meeting from your home given concerns with COVID-19,” said a previous advisory.

“Our Councillors and staff cannot avoid attending but you can. Please help protect their health and safety as well as your own, and view live stream via our website.

“Should you wish to submit a question to Council, they will only be accepted using the online form (see link below). Questions can be submitted prior to 6.45pm.

$580,000 deal

■ A key parcel of land in the heart of Bayswater will be retained for community use following negotiations between the Victorian Government and Knox Council.

Mayor Cr Nicole Seymour said the rare opportunity to purchase land in such a central location was too good to pass up.

The land at 750 Mountain Hwy, Bayswater is adjacent to the new Bayswater railway station and the iconic aeroplane boy.

It was purchased for $580,000.

The week is a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men’s health with the aim of raising health outcomes and health needs.

Associate Professor Steven Roberts, Sociology (Faculty of Arts) will talk about men, masculinity and food - the gendered dimensions of eating red or processed meats with overconsumption of both linked to environmental issues, obesity and cancer risks.

He will pose questions: ■ How men across many cultures have consistently lower fruit and vegetable intakes.

■ How eating meat is a means to convey manliness and vegetarianism is seen as unmanly.

■ How tackling masucline norms and structural barriers including cost and accessibility of healthy foods can improve men’s health.

Dr Karla Elliott, Lecturer, Sociology (Faculty of Arts) is asking ■ How drinking alcohol is seen as part of ‘being a man’.

What’s On National Theatre

■ To help curb the spread of COVID-19, the National Theatre in St Kilda has been closed since March and is now waiting to hear when audiences can return to take their seats and watch their favourite performers.

A letter from CEO Peter McCoy and Chair Susan Thacore reminds audiences of past live shows enjoyed on the National Theatre stage, and points out that it's likely an artist from every country in the world has performed there.

Whilst eager to reopen the National Theatre doors and welcome back patrons, the letter points out the Theatre is now under financial pressure.

New collective

■ Independent St Kilda-based theatre company Theatre Works has initiated a new creative writing collective titled 'She Writes'.

The program will nurture a wealth of talented female playwrights, provide creative support, industry support and financial support for writers, ensuring some dynamic, relevant performance scripts to reflect the current extraordinary times.

It is planned these works will be ready to mount when the theatre becomes active again.

In partnership with the Victorian College for the Arts, this program offers vital connections to sustain artists throughout the pandemic and grows important relationships for future collaborations and career development.

Some $20,000 is needed to be raised to help bring this program to life.

She Writes will nurture talented female writers from diverse backgrounds, allow female writers to redefine themselves in the public space, constructing and controlling their own representation and provide connection to a community or peers and professionals, breaking down the isolation created by the pandemic and providing scaffolded networking opportunities.

The program will also alleviate the financial hardship currently being experienced by artists.

Review: Walk

■ There is a sense of Irish lyricism in the words of Enda Walsh’s Walk, a short monologue of a child recounting a stroll down a local road.

Captured are the trivial things; her father’s jacket, the picking of raspberries, a freezing rivulet. These are the familiar delights of home that give recognizable substance to one’s world.

Zara Devlin’s delivery, without overstatement, captures the joy such things hold – taking a walk in her mother’s slippers. The performance is rich with the pleasure that a sense of place can provide an individual.

Part poetry, part performance, this monologue in the Dear Ireland series from the Abbey Theatre is short and linear.

Even though there is a digital distance between performer and audience, the intimacy of an individual talking directly to camera transcends the apparent disconnection one might have when viewing on-line.

Devlin’s warmth as the character and her ability to believably deliver Walsh’s lines makes for a very personal performance.

The constraints of lockdown and isolation have not diminished the ability of authors and actors to practice their craft.

Look up the Dear Ireland series on YouTube and take your pick of short performances to punctuate a spare 15 minutes of your day.

Rehearsals at Burwood ■ The Playhouse Players have rescheduled their production of No Time On by Graeme Forsyth for mid-October performances, with rehearsals commencing on July 18 at the Rentoul Theatre, 16 Livingstone Close, Burwood.

Russel replaces Burnso ■ Business identity Russel Howcroft will join the top-rating 3AW Breakfast program.

Howcroft, best known for his role as a panellist on the long-running ABC series Gruen, will team with Ross Stevenson on Melbourne’s No. 1 radio show from Monday, August 3.

His appointment will follow John Burns’s retirement after his 75th birthday next month, as announced last year.

Howcroft developed a love for radio when he filled in on 3AW’s Weekend Break program

in 2011 and is excited about his latest career move.

Tom Malone, Managing Director of Nine Radio, welcomed Howcroft to the 3AW team.

● Josephine Moon ■ Being able to combine two passions into making a living would be many people's idea of bliss.

Author Josephine Moon managed to do just that and the result is her new novel The Cake Maker's Wish.

As a self-confessed foodie, Josephine has written a book about life, love, family and the pleasures of gorgeous food.

Her protagonist is passionate cake maker Olivia, a single mum with a son called Darcy.

Olivia takes a leap of faith in uprooting their lives in Tasmania for the Cotswolds in England, to take part in a project designed to save traditional village life.

So she establishes a cake shop called Rambling Rose, and the book follows her adventures and ups and downs as she gives her all to make this idea work.

Josephine the foodie has won prizes in shows for her jam and her Persian love cake, which makes an appearance in the novel.

Naturally, writing a book like this takes practical research, something that Josephine feels changed her own life.

"It's made me a better cook.My kitchen is now stocked with better equipment and I have skills in cake decorating that I didn't have before, and I even entered my Persian love cake into my first country show competition, where it placed second," a proud Josephine said.

Josephine isn't just a novelist with a sweet tooth - in 2018 she established a group called Authors for Farmer to try to help those on the land suffering from terrible drought.

"I was really moved by the plight of drought-stricken farmers. To help them, I put the call out to Aussie authors who might like to donate a book or two and coordinated a nationwide book raffle," Josephine said.

While you might have expected this initiative to raise a few hundred dollars, the resulting response was staggering. " Through the writing community's generosity, we raised over $27,000," a thrilled Josephine recalled, proving that this foodieturned-author knows how to put her money and those of her writer colleagues - where her mouth is.

Exhibition: closes Sunday November 15. ★ Jacky Redgate - Hold On Jacky Redgate has a 40-year practice and is critically acclaimed as one of Australia's leading contemporary artists.

Redgate's career began in the context of the late 1970s feminism, minimalism and conceptual art.

Redgate is well known for her sculptural and photographic works using systems and logic, and particularly for her sustained series of 'mirror; works over the past two decades that have engaged with optical phenomena 'perpetual dislocations' and slippages between representations and abstraction.

Jacky Redgate - Hold On presents the most recent iteration of her mirror work in its entirety that reflects how, while continuing to make her experimental 'hybrid' mirror works over the past 10 years.

Redgate has been recalling and introducing into her work o and oeuvre the autobiographical images and subjects of her juvenilia.

■ Reopening June 30.

With major survey of acclaimed Australian modernist artist Joy Hester and a solo exhibition by contemporary artist Carolyn Eskdale.

Following updated guidelines from the Victorian Government, Heide Museum of Modern Art announces a reopening date of Tuesday June 30, after its temporary closure due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

The museum is implementing the physical distancing, capacity limits and increased hygiene measures outlined in the Government's roadmap to recovery.

Heide will reopen all its galleries including two major exhibitions, Joy Hester: Remember Me and Carolyn Eskdale: Memory Horizon.

On display until October 4, Joy Hester: Remember Me celebrates the centenary of the birth of Australian modernist artist Joy Hester (1920 - 1960) with a major survey of her distinctive oeuvre. The exhibition is the first solo exhibition of Hester's art in almost 20 years and brings together more than 140 significant works from public and private collections, including seldom-seem impromptu studies that shed light on Hester's unique style and creative process.

■ Circus Oz is currently working to ensure survival and thriving in a new world as they reimagine the future, Performing arts, producers and venues were some of the first businesses to be shut down when restrictions came into effect in mid-March.

"Our industry ground to a halt in a matter of days and we had to come to terms with a Great Pause of everything we do - shows, classes and events at The Melba,” said an Oz spokesman.

Half of Circus Oz's annual income was lost in a matter of weeks and "we came very close to having to shut our doors forever. Our solution, as with many other businesses, was to go into hibernation".

Circus Oz is still here and using this period of hibernation to find new ways of working so they can continue to create opportunities for artists as well as creating art through and post pandemic. "To reimagine what our future could look like.”

While theatres are allowed to open from June 22, the reality is that many, including the Melba Spiegeltent, will need to remain closed for much

longer. In order to keep people safe there are changes needed to be made and protocols needed to follow including sanitisation and physical distancing.

"The logistics and costs of implementing these measures are prohibitive for many and it's going to take a significant amount of time to get it right so our audiences can feel confident in returning to an event.”

A return to full operations will not be possible for many organisations until 2021 and even then, the landscape of events and public gatherings will be markedly changed.

Borders re-open on July 15 ■ French Polynesia is reopening its borders to international tourists on July 15 as long as certain conditions are met.

Cruise lines have also been given the green light to resume cruising and Aranui Cruises is set to recommence passenger services on July 18, with some enhanced health and hygiene measures.

With some uncertainty around who will be able to travel to French Polynesia in the coming months, Aranui is kickstarting passenger operations with a locals' cruise.

As a mixed passengerfreighter vessel, Aranui 5 is one of the few ships that continued sailing during the pandemic, carrying on with its essential service of cargo delivery to one of the most remote island groups in the world - the Marquesas Islands.

Located nearly 5000 kilometres from the nearest continental land mass (Mexico's west coast) and 1400 kilometres north-east of Tahiti, French Polynesia's northernmost archipelago is no stranger to isolation and for more than 60 years an Aranui vessel has acted as a vital lifeline connecting the people of the Marquesas with the outside world.

It Must Be Heaven

■ Originally scheduled to open in April, the comic saga movie It Must Be Heaven was 'grounded' during the lockdown period, but the good news is that the 97-minute film, distributed by Potential Films, will now open in Australian cinemas on July 2.

When Elia Suleiman (as himself) travels from Palestine to Paris and New York, the film-maker's eyes are constantly observing people, their actions and cultures in the different countries. At one stage he is asked if he is 'the perfect stranger'.

Kathryn Keeble previewed this intriguing movie at a cinema just before lockdown, and her review is below.

This whimsical tale stars writer-director Elia Suleiman starring in his own story.

Suleiman plays a bemused, Monsieur Hulot-esque character travelling from his home in Nazareth to New York and Paris on a mission to drum up funding for the film we are watching.

Through ironic observations, in particular, given that Suleiman begins his journey from his hometown of Nazareth in Palestine, the further Suleiman travels, the more absurd the world becomes.

And that is the point of the film.

Suleiman visits a producer (Vincent Maraval) only to be told that: “Your film is not Palestinian enough.” In New York, a taxi driver (Kwasi Songui) asks him where he is from.

“Nazareth, I’m Palestinian.”

“A real Palestinian”, the taxi driver is elated refusing to charge him and effusing about the cause.

Actor Gael Garcia Bernal joins Suleiman to pitch to another producer.

“He’s not a Palestinian from Israel — he is a Palestinian from Palestine,” Garcia says.

“He’s making a comedy.”

The producer (Nancy Grant) delivers a deadpan assessment, “Oh that’s funny already”, and moves swiftly on.

Chance encounters demonstrate how incongruous the world can be.

American supermarkets sell guns to already gun-toting Americans: assault rifles, submachine guns and bazookas share space with groceries in trolleys.

Parisian cops power around the city on Segway pods only to measure a sidewalk café for a breach of the by-law.

Bastille Day renders the city desolate with the occasional flyover or incursion of tanks.

Back in Palestine, Suleiman slips back into village life. Drinks with neighbours, rustling olive and orange groves.

A thumping disco where young people enjoy the music and each other’s company, just like they do all over the world.

It Must be Heaven opens in cinemas on July 2.

■ Hi everyone, from my suite at the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites comes this week's news.

Skinny gene discovery

■ It was with tremendous joy and celebration that the Ramada Plaza Hotel's main restaurant, Kitchen 24, out front of the complex on Santa Monica Boulevard, opened its doors to guests and patrons.

After many months of lock down it was wonderful to see the same friendly staff who are willing to get back to give their guests the best experience of course with the required social distancing in place. I noticed a new and bright spring in their steps.

Three of the regulars who missed the great food and coffee and drinks, 24 hours a day, were there when the doors opened.

You can see just by the expression on their faces that they were happy their watering hole was back in action.

America bouncing back?

■ It is weird. A nation in despair, an ever growing pandemic and protests over racism and police brutality, yet there is a scent of economic optimism.

Employers added millions of jobs in May and the jobless rate fell. Businesses are reopening, and the rate of coronavirus deaths has leveled.

That is all good news, but the stock market movement represents a handful of tech stocks, the reality is vastly different.

People are viewing the slight rebound as a sign that a crisis has been averted.

But there are clear signs that the collapse of economic activity has set in motion problems that will play out over many months, likely many years.

This crisis is so large and so sudden that the usual adjustment mechanisms aren't working very well. The people losing their jobs because of shutdowns cannot easily find new ones, because so much of the economy is shuttered at the same time.

The result is that what started as a disruption to the supply side of the economy has metastasized into a collapse of the demand side.

The demand shock, with lagged effects, is only beginning to hurt major segments of the economy, like sellers of capital goods that are experiencing plunging sales; state and local governments that are seeing tax revenues crater; and landlords who are seeing rent payments dry up.

Eventually, they took more aggressive action, creating a federal program of mass employment putting 700,000 Americans at work on federal public works.

The world right now is confusing and chaotic but that makes it all the more important not to lose focus on fundamental forces that risk holding back the economy and that, if unchecked, could mean a second lost decade in this young century.

Voters’ minds changed

■ Examining county-level voting patterns, the survey that blackled protests in which some violence occurs are associated with a statistically significant decline in Democratic vote-share in the 1964, 1968 and 1972 presidential elections.

Black-led nonviolent protests, by contrast, exhibit a statistically significant positive relationship with county-level Democratic vote-share in the same period. Further, I find that in the 1968 presidential election exposure to violent protests caused a decline in Democratic vote-share.

Examining counterfactual scenarios in the 1968 election, I estimate that fewer violent protests are associated with a substantially increased likelihood that the Democratic presidential nominee, Hubert Humphrey, would have beaten the Republican nominee, Richard Nixon.

As African Americans were strongly identified with the Democratic Party in this time period, my results suggest that, in at least some contexts, political violence by a subordinate group may contribute to a backlash among segments of the dominant group and encourage outcomes directly at odds with the preferences of the protestors.

■ We all know that one person who can eat whatever they like and never gain a pound. Ice cream at 2 in the morning?

Bring it on. A third, or fourth, slice of pizza?

Sure, why not.

For the rest of us, the genetic perks that these individuals enjoy can be frustrating to say the least.

Now, a groundbreaking new international study appears to have zeroed in on the so-called "skinny gene" that help keep such individuals thin.

Scientists from NewYork, Los Angeles and San Francisco say that lower, or deficient levels of the gene Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) are significantly linked to skinniness and bodily resistance to weight gain.

Why some people eat as much as they want and stay lean while others can't. In mice, genetic deletion of ALK resulted in thin animals with marked resistance to diet induced obesity while food intake was not changed.

The researchers found that ALK in the hypothalamus controls energy expenditure via sympathetic control of adipose tissue lipolysis.

Most research projects focusing on weight loss and gain search for genes that cause obesity.

This study is novel due to the fact that it focuses specifically for a gene linked to thinness instead.

Using an Estonian population sample of more than 47,000 people, the study's authors performed a series of genomewide association studies.

By comparing especially thin people's genes to individuals of an average weight, they were able to pick out ALK. Up until now, ALK has really only been known for the role it plays in some cancers, as it tends to mutate in numerous forms of cancer.

That being said, its physiological purpose has always remained a mystery.

To test their theory that diminished levels of ALK are responsible for genetic skinniness, the research team performed an experiment in which they "deactivated" the ALK genes in a group of mice.

To the researchers' surprise, those mice immediately became skinnier despite continuing with the same diets and activity levels.

Too slow to act ■ Developing countries listened to experts, locked down and prevented thousands of deaths.

To date, nearly 80 per cent of global COVID-19 deaths have occurred in the most developed nations.

The US, Italy, Spain, France and the UK contain just 7.5 per cent of the world's population and 68 per cent of its Coronavirus death toll.

While the developed world's failures have been well-documented, the successes newly industrialized or developing countries have gone mostly unnoticed.

Developing countries make up 85 per cent of the global population but account for just 21 per cent of COVID-19 deaths.

In late May, West Africa with a greater population than the United States had recorded just 654 COVID-19 deaths, a figure some Western countries were racking up every day.

So why the dramatically lower death tolls in President Trump's so called "shithole countries"? Simple. They simply managed the pandemic better than rich countries. Over the last few decades, developing countries have made huge strides in terms of infrastructure, literacy, health care and welfare policy. Mongolia extensively disinfected all public spaces in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. The country has reported zero coronavirus deaths. Developing countries tackled COVID19 through the diligent efforts of their politicians and their populations.

The most decisive step developing countries took to control the coronavirus was intervening before it was too late, they closed their borders and locked down their populations far sooner than Western countries. While Western reporting has typically focused on the disadvantages poor countries face when responding to the coronavirus, they also have considerable advantages. That is why the numbers are low in Australia.

■ I think my first memory of hearing a Fats Domino song was Ain't That A Shame back in 1956.

I loved the deep resonance of his voice and the strong beat behind the song.

Rock and Roll was new to us pimply faced teenagers and we couldn't get enough of the American rock songs which became part of the soundtrack of our lives.

Antoine Dominique ‘Fats’ Domino Jnr was born in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1928.

Antoine studied piano at the age of nine. He left school to work in a factory so that he could play piano in the bars at night.

Antoine mastered the Boogie Woogie techniques and the classic Rhythm and Blues piano style.

In 1938 he married his childhood sweetheart, Rosemary. He became a father and almost lost his hand in a factory accident.

Antoine was given the nick-name of ‘Fats’ and it stuck. He joined trumpeter Dave Bartholomew's band.

Dave recognised the special talent of Fats and arranged a contract for him with Imperial Records.

In 1949 Fats Domino had his first million selling hit song The Fat Man and Dave became his manager.

In 1975 Fats Domino performed one show at Festival Hall in Melbourne as part of a national tour. He was accompanied by his 10-piece band.

The show ran for about two hours.

Fats brought a lot of expensive jewellery with him and it had to be guarded - his star shaped watch alone had 352 diamonds on it. The tour also included New Zealand.

How to get outdoors in Victoria’s own Gippsland ■ JOHN ROZENTALS shows how to get outdoors in Victoria's Gippsland.

Gippsland is renowned for its amazing nature-based experiences.

Here are some of the best ways you can get out amongst nature exploring the hiking trails, traversing the rail trails and mountain bike parks, and top locations to drop a fishing line.

Hiking. If you weren't a walker before isolation, odds are that you have become one.

Wilsons Prom is now open to visitors and the park has some great hiking options.

Hard-roof accommodation at Tidal River is open for bookings so visitors can stay overnight, go for a hike and relax amongst nature spotting a myriad of wildlife.

For a hike with a view, try the Mount Oberon Summit (6.8km return, 2 hours) or the lesser known, but equally impressive, Mount Bishop Walk (7.4km, 2.5 hours). Both have spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding coast and off-shore islands.

For a more challenging trek, the Sealers Cove walk is a spectacular 19km hike that will take people a full day (between 6.5-7hours). This picturesque, circular cove has turquoise waters, golden sand and a lovely area to sit and enjoy lunch.

The George Bass Coastal Trail is 8km one way (approx 2 hours) or 16km if you walk the return trail.

The trail starts at the Punch Bowl near San Remo and traverses the coast and cliff tops to Kilcunda.

This gorgeous walk offers panoramic coastal views from a narrow winding path, along cliff tops rising high above the pounding surf of Bass Strait.

The George Bass Trail now links with the Bass Coast Rail Trail so it is possible to walk from Punch Bowl all the way into Wonthaggi.

Tarra Bulga is an incredible national park with towering mountainash forest and some lovely walks.

The Corrigan suspension bridge is a short walk which begins at the visitors centre. This bridge stretches through the rainforest canopy, offering spectacular views of the fern gully on the forest floor below.

To enjoy the lush gullies, tree ferns and giant trees try the 6.8 km Forest Track which begins via the Lyrebird

Travel

with John Rozentals Ridge Track and completes a circuit back to the visitors centre. It winds through mountain-ash forest, a rainforest gully and an unusual thicket of hazel pomaderris.

The Toorongo and Ampitheatre Falls Walk is fantastic during the wetter months with the impressive tiered waterfall in full flow.

Located just outside Noojee, the 2.2km loop walk takes just over an hour. Hikers will pass through dense native bush complete with towering gums and lush ferns.

While in the region check out the Noojee Trestle Bridge - the tallest surviving wooden trestle bridge in Victoria. Here is the start of a 6km return trail which takes about two hours.

Bike riding. Whether riders don the lycra, cruise with the family, or take on some serious mountain bike trails, there is a great variety of cycling option in Gippsland.

The Great Southern Rail Trail traverses Prom country all the while travelling through lush farmland, historic bridges and native forests.

Take the full 72km trail from Leongatha to Port Welshpool or choose one of the seven shorter segments.

The East Gippsland Rail Trail is 96km in total from Bairnsdale to Orbost. There are four distinct sections ranging in distance from 8k to 38km.

The complete trail travels through

orests, floodplains and the towns of Nicholson, Bruthen and Nowa Nowa.

The Gippsland Plains Rail Trail offers a varied and leisurely ride through dairy country, over bridges and expansive views of the Gippsland plains and Great Dividing Ranges.

The trail runs from Traralgon to Stratford and is 63km in total.

There are V/Line train stations at both Traralgon and Stratford so tourists can pedal one way and return by train to their vehicles.

Mountain bike enthusiasts need look no further than the Blores Hill Mountain Bike Park trails.

Located just north of Heyfield, the park is set on 50 acres of land and offers 36km of trails suitable for beginners to experienced, and specifically designed for mountain bike riders. There are jumps, bridges, rocky outcrops and flowing trails through the bush.

The Erica Mountain Bike Park is made up of two sets of trails carved out of either side of the highway at Erica. With more than 30km of rough dirt trails, the park is suitable for most ages, but some riding experience is recommended.

A little further afield is the Nowa Nowa Mountain Bike Park. The dedicated mountain bike park is built on a hill and sculpted with 35km on trails including 20km of mountain bike trails and 15km of dual-purpose walking/ cycling paths.

Fishing and boating. Gippsland's coast and waterways and the Gippsland Lakes are synonymous with fishing and boating.

With eased restrictions Victorians are now able to get out amongst the waterways again and drop a fishing line.

Adults and kids alike will love to fish at the Port Welshpool long jetty.

This iconic jetty seems to go on for miles as it extends into deeper waters.

With rehabilitation works completed in 2018 the long jetty now boasts some new built in seating, water supply, handrails, lighting and fishing stations.

Fishing and boating is abundant near the seaside town of Port Albert.

There are many opportunities for anglers.

Experienced boaties can head through the entrance for some good seasonal catches.

Big Brother is watching

■ The new look Big Brother on Seven attracted 53,000 entries from eager contestants to take part in the current series.

After wading through the candidates Seven finally chose 20 applicants who will face off instant dismissal every night of the show. Personal hygiene could be a bit of a problem as showers are restricted to three minutes per contestant.

Annoyed at re-runs?

■ If you’re annoyed watching re-runs of movies and sit coms there is hope in sight as Hollywood may open for business within the week.

It all depends on state of health in California as their track record with Coronavirus is pretty crook - 125,000 positive cases and 4500 deaths .

Anti-guns campaign

■ Warner has released a re-boot of Looney Tunes featuring Elmer Fudd and his relentless pursuit of that Wascally Wabbit , Bugs Bunny .

Same old crazy situations but something is missing- Elmer Fudd carries no guns but has access to plenty of other powerful artillery .

When questioned Warner spokesman said “not doing guns”and guess what? That Wascally Wabbit lives to see another day. Maybe pressure came from the top to ban use of guns - even in cartoons.

Like father, like son

■ The Kohler family must have finance running through their veins. First there’s Dad, Alan Kohler, who presents the evening finance news on the 7pm ABC News. His reporting is entertaining in a down-to-earth manner.

Then there’s his son, Chris ,who after a Uni education, worked in finance journalism and recently landed a top job reporting on-air on finance on Nine News – like father, like son.

Utterly compelling and deeply disturbing drama based on a true story that spans over two decades, and continues to this day, "Dark Waters" boils with a raw intensity and realism of corporate greed and arrogance over the global economy, an unsettling environmental thriller void of cliché, and as it's story methodically seeps under your skin there's no escaping its shocking, thought provoking and galvanising conclusion.

Multi-Oscar nominated Mark Ruffalo (Spotlight, Foxcatcher) gives an emotionally intense and sympathetically believable performance as lawyer Rob Bilott going up against the corporate chemical giant, DuPont, and is aided with equally gripping results by Oscar winners Tim Robbins and Anne Hathaway, along with Oscar nominee Mare Winningham, and veteran character actor Bill Camp in a scene stealing performance as a tormented and long suffering farmer.

Based on The New York Times magazine article "The Lawyer Who Became DuPont's Worst Nightmare" by Nathaniel Rich, how this was ignored at this year's Academy awards in numerous categories including Best Actor, Picture, Director (Todd Haynes) and Screenplay will remain a serious oversight and mystery, but suffice to say, this was a total surprise, an intense, atmospheric, tragic, startling and riveting discovery of corruption and a system that has failed to protect us.

An infusion or reminiscent of such '70s paranoia thrillers as: "The China Syndrome," "The Parallax View" and "Chinatown," as well as such great legal courtroom thrillers as "The Rainmaker," "The Insider," "Erin Brockovich" and "Michael Clayton," to name a few, that comes highly recommended!

Stars: *** Review: When a young women's abusive scientist ex boyfriend takes his own life and leaves her his fortune, she suspects his death was a hoax, but as she tries to rebuild her life, a series of coincidences turn lethal, she works to prove that she is being hunted by someone nobody can see.

A new contemporary take on "The Invisible Man" inspired H.G. Wells classic novel followed by the Universal Pictures classic of the same name in 1933 starring Claude Rains and has continued through the generations, and this latest effort holds interest throughout with a number of nail-biting moments and quietly effective tension, however, at an overlong 125 minutes, plot pot holes and lacklustre pacing effect the overall final proceedings.

Star Elizabeth Moss, whose credits include the hit cable series "The Handmaids Tale" (2017) and the chilling "Us" (2019) gives a convincing and overall compelling performance as the abused and stalked Cecilia, and is aided by a fine supporting cast that includes Michael Dorman (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), Aldis Hodge (Hidden Figures), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Haunting of Hill House) and Harriet Dyer.

Filmed entirely in Australia and helmed by Melbourne director Leigh Whannel, whose previous credits include the horror thrillers "Insidious: Chapter 3" (2015) and "Upgrade" (2018), this multiplex horror reboot may be a timely addition in this era of the "Me-Too" movement, but as it stands, this latest incarnation of H.G. Wells' classic tale is a devilishly dark but ultimately insipid addition to all those that came before it, and any minor flaws aside, has set itself up to continue the franchise by journey's end.

Rourke’s Reviews Get In ■ (R). 98 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

Originally titled Furie, this nasty, ultra-violent French thriller harks back to the extreme films that country produced over a decade ago (Martyrs, Inside, etc), but also seems inspired by films such as Pacific Heights, Straw Dogs, and even Wake In Fright.

A young family find themselves shut out of their home, and through a series of events, husband Paul (Adama Niane) finds himself associating with Mickey (Paul Hamy), a repugnant fellow who gradually reduces the impish school teacher to his basic, bestial self.

Co-writer/director Olivier Abbou (Territories) explores the darkest part of human nature (at times with jet-black humour), right through to its thoroughly cynical final scene.

Dark Waters ■ (M). 127 minutes. Available June 17 on DVD. Todd Haynes (Safe, Far From Heaven) invigorates familiar 'David vs Goliath' material with his distinctive style, unafraid to bring a dour, almost horror-like atmosphere to this compelling true story.

Gorgeously filmed, and filled with first-rate performances (including Mark Ruffalo, Bill Camp, Victor Garber, Anne Hathaway and Tim Robbins), this was criminally overlooked by the Academy, and like Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, was largely ignored by audiences who claim to be crying out for quality entertainment.

With its local theatrical release cut short due to COVID-19, here's hoping the home viewing format allows this outstanding film to get the recognition it deserves.

Queen and Slim

■ (MA). 131 minutes. Available June 17 on DVD. Clever, provocative subversion of the Bonnie & Clyde tale, comparing the journey of an innocentyet-vilified black couple (a superb Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie TurnerSmith) who have to go on the run after killing a racist white police officer, with that of the two infamous white psychopaths who were revered by the general public.

Potent themes and incidents fill Lena White's script, and director Melina Matsoukas doesn't shy away from its controversial elements.

Inspired by the real-life murder spree of Charles Starkweather and his girlfriend, Caril Ann Fugate, in 1958, this startling big screen directorial debut for Terrence Malick is savagely evocative of a time (in Hollywood as in History) and yet so poetically fluent of a landscape in which the horrors are depicted, that the deeply embedded romanticized outlaw fairy-tale mythology bravely depicts a surrealistic expression of a shattered pop culture sensibility.

Beautifully photographed by Tak Fujimoto, Stevan Larner and Brian Probyn, with compelling career defining performances by Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek in her second only big screen role, this is a beautifully haunting and poignant vision set in a morally ambiguous and terrifying nightmare.

Hit Me Anyone One More Time ■ (PG). 127 minutes. Writer/director Koki Mitani (Suite Dreams, The Magic Hour) returns to form with this good-natured comedy about a terrible Prime Minister (a wonderful Kiichi Nakai) losing his memory, and having to learn to do a better job from scratch.

While not up there with Mitani's best, this pleasant outing does offer some decent laughs, helped along by a great ensemble cast.

■ The Maroondah Sports Club in Ringwood East has gone into administration.

The once popular music and entertainment venue closed indefinitely on March 23 following the COVID- 19 crisis.

Reports swirling around indicate a possible ‘white knight’ coming to its rescue but until then the doors stay closed.

It follows on from The Caravan Music Club in East Bentleigh which also had to suspend operations indefinitely due to difficult and challenging times.Go od Friday

Vale Peter Martin

■ TV man Peter Martin has died. He joined Channel 9 from the ABC in July 1958, joining the staff in transmitters. He became the original Supervising Technician of the video-tape department at TCN-9 Sydney. He worked on the Videodisc live Slo-Mo machine which revolutionised sports coverage.

I was lucky enough to meet Murray Tyrrell, aka the 'Mouth of the Hunter', before the great man died.

He was right in his element, up to his armpits in fermenting red wine, and spruiking "another great Hunter vintage".

I only met his son, Bruce, in passing in the lounge of the Sydney InterContinental, where he was waiting for the NSW Wine Awards dinner, to be hosted by the effervescent Lyndey Milan and the hotel's then GM, Wolfgang Grimm.

It was a Sunday afternoon, I think, and news of Princess Diana's tragic death had just began to filter through on a traditionally slow news day.

Any hope I had of getting coverage for my first wine-related media release soon evaporated.

I eventually came to know Bruce much better than I had Murray, the relationship settled a few years ago over a private tasting in the Tyrrells Hunter Valley winery of the best of his dry whites.

I never came to know Murray well as I have Bruce, and while the latter lacks the former's pizzazz I'm sure he has grown into a worthy champion of the area and of the family-owned operation he now heads.

I'm sure, too, that Bruce has plenty more cards up his sleeve still to play.

Off-stride shortly after the start ■ Another week of regional racing commenced at Shepparton Monday, June 8 - the highlight being the victory of David Aiken's 5Y0 Majestic Son-Maori Road mare Aldebaran Crescent in the Saddleworld Shepparton Trotters Handicap over 2190 metres.

Second up for 12 months and first up since February, Aldebaran Crescent stepped cleanly from 20 metres before going off stride shortly after the start when checked by Spiders Devil off the same mark which veered outwards.

While all this was going on Damian Wilson took Like A Sunbeam to the lead after stepping safely from barrier four. Gradually making ground when balanced, Aldebaran Crescent moved to be three back in the running line at the bell.

When Aldebaran Poppy ahead of her joined the leader prior to the home turn, Aldebaran Crescent three wide put in her claim and ran home best to gain the day by 10.9 metres in advance of Levina out five wide after angling away from three back the markers, with Aldebaran Poppy 1.5 metres away in third place. The mile rate 206.8.

■ Chiltern district (Indigo Valley) trainer Wayne Anderson and reinsman son Chris were big winners when My Magic Merlin, a 5Y0 gelded son of Mach Three and Making Magic greeted the judge in the 2190 metre Neatline Homes Pace.

Going forward from outside the front line, My Magic Merlin was at the head of affairs within a lap and after being rated a treat, ran out a 8.6 metre victor in 1-59.9 over Provocator which raced exposed for the final circuit.

Impressive start ■ At Melton on Tuesday, Toolern Vale trainer Adam Kelly produced a most impressive first starter by the name of Bankroll to take the DNR Logistics Pace over 2240 metres.

Driven by Darby McGuigan, Bankroll coming out of gate five was trapped three wide in the early stages before settling outside the poleline leader Atego Shades.

Despite the tough passage, Banknote a 5Y0 gelding by Artistic Fella from Banking On You took care of the leader in the last lap and defied all challengers to register a 1.4 metre margin over Guiseppe Moon (one/three - three wide trail last lap) before switching down to the sprint lane. Heera Rani off a double three wide trail last lap was third 5.5 metres away. The mile rate 1-59.1.

■ Long time Melton mentor Mario Azziopardi was successful with lightly raced 3Y0 Art Major-Radical Storm colt Radical Major in the 2240 metre COGS Pace.

Restrained by James Herbertson from gate two as the start was effected with polemarker Our Master George leading before taking a trail on The Whole Package, Radical Major was given an economical trip three back in the moving line before going forward three wide solo in the final circuit.

Coasting up to the leader on the home turn, Radical Major reached the judge 3.3 metres in advance of Shady Dancer one/one and The Whole Package which held down third 3.5 metres back. The mile rate 1-58.9.

Terang's Mattie Craven snared a stable double at Stawell with cleverly named Sportswriter-Whodoyouwantmetobe filly Just Be Yourself taking the Carey Covers 3Y0 Pace over 2180 metres and 8Y0 Angus HallSumthingaboutmaori gelding Gus An Maori the Hygain Feeds Trotters Handicap over the same journey.

Jus Be Yourself bred and raced by the David and Terry Lewis began swiftly from gate for with Mattie in the sulky to run her rivals ragged, defeating Nine Diamonds which trailed by 1.9 metres in 2-00.5. Silver Domino (three back the markers) was third 9.7 metres away.

■ Very much in-form Gus An Maori taking a concession for Sofia Arvissson settled at the tail of the field after starting from 30 metres as Dream Lover led from barrier three.

Friends which trailed the leader was third 5.6 metres back.

■ At Bendigo, Kilmore's Rita Burnett trained and reined 5Y0 Art Major-Mademoiselle Gigi gelding Cheeky Major to victory in the Santons Of Bendigo Pace over 1650 metres.

Bred and raced by Pat Driscoll's Yabby Dam Farms Pty Ltd, Avimore led throughout from gate five to turn the tables on hot favourite Kyvalley Senator which raced outside him for the last half of the race. ■ Euroa's Cameron Maggs has enjoyed a good season and landed the 2150 metre TAB Long May We Play Pace with Ideal Suspect, a 5Y0 gelded son of American Ideal and Village Spy in a rate of 1-57.8.

Using the sprint lane from three back the markers after starting inside the second line, Ideal Suspect sprouted wings when clear to prevail by a head from Elegant Jewel which trailed the short priced favourite and third placegetter The Brooklyn Brawler before moving outside him on the home turn finishing 2.9 metres back.

■ Wallan's Shinn family Noel, Ruth and Chris, were victorious with Shadow Play-Its Dutch Courage filly Celestia in the Southern Cross Office Equipment (SCOE) 3Y0 Pace over 2150 metres.

Driven by Chris, Celestia after a cosy trip four back the markers from gate four moved to race exposed for the final circuit. Dashing away approaching the final bend, Celestia ran out an easy 18.5 metre victor ahead of rank outsider Calypso Mistress which followed her home, with Shady Jess a head away third after trailing the weakening leader Naamark and being shuffled back prior to the home turn. The mile rate 158.1.

Double header ■ Another double header on Thursday with Kilmore racing during the afternoon and Ballarat at night.

At Kilmore, Wahring trainer Daniel Jack combined with Danny Thackeray aboard Betterthancheddar-Miss Feelgood filly Freyja to land the MC Labour 2Y0 Pace over 1690 metres paying tote odds of $58.70.

Taken back from outside the front line, Freyja bred and raced by wife Sonia Mahar settled with most of the field ahead of her as stablemate Emrites crossed the leader Call Me Diva at the bell.

Going forward three wide in the final circuit, Freyja finished best to register a 1.7 metre victory from Abbie Lincoln (one/one) in a mile rate of 1-59.6. Outlook was third a half neck away after angling wide from three back the pegs.

■ Avenel reinsman Josh Aiken has been having a ball all through the regional racing and chalked up a double for Shepparton's Steven Duffy, winning the 1690 metre McIvor Estate 3Y0 Pace aboard Betterthancheddar- Alleluia gelding Ubetcha in the McIvor Estate 3Y0 Pace and Somebeachsomewhere-Radical Calza 4Y0 mare Janjuc in the TAB Long May We Play Pace over the same journey.

Ubetcha raced uncovered from outside the front line, proving too strong for first starter Casino Barry which flashed home late from the rear, with Better Day third after leading.

The margins 2.6 by 10 metres in a mile rate of 1-57.1. Janjuc also starting outside the front line being eased forward three wide from three back in the last lap to score nicely by 1.6 metres from Peyton Princess (three back the markers) and a death-seating Nats A Christian who was a head away third. The mile rate 1-57.3.

■ The 2150 metre C & M Build Group Trotters Mobile highlighted the program with victory going to the raging hot ($1.30) favourite Sundons Courage for Newstead area's Brad Angove.

A 7Y0 Sundon-Truscott Photo entire, Sundons Courage led all of the way from gate three to win narrowly but untouched by 1.1 metres from Well Deserved which trailed easing off his back on straightening.

Fratellino was third 11 metres away after following the pair. The mile rate 2-02.5. Brad Angove received all of the spoils as he bred, races, trains and drove the winner.

■ Ballarat could only hold a small six event card and Terang brothers Paddy (trainer) and Jason Lee (driver) combined to land the TAB Long Way We Play Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2200 metres with 4Y0 Ready Cash-Donegal Flat 4Y0 entire Celtic Cash, but not before giving his supporters a scare.

■ Two relative new players to Melton regional racing were successful on Friday - Terang's Mattie Craven landed a double with SkyvalleySweetasay filly Pink Galahs leading for the majority of the 1720 metre Aldebran Park Trotters Mobile to score by a head from stablemate Gus An Maori which led out before surrendering Majestic Dream was third 18.3 metres back in a mile rate of 1-59.9.

■ Great Western duo Grant Campbell and Kerryn Manning's in-form recent stable addition Glenavril King (Courage Under Fire-Lombo Socialite) did similar in the TAB Long May We Play Pace over 2240 metres, accounting for Our Sportscaster and Ragnarr (2.8 X 2 metres) in 158.4 with Kerryn driving.
