■ Josie Millard, the new Principal of Kew High School, has been mentioned in State Parliament by local MLA, Tim Smith.

He described Ms Millard as “a very old friend who I have known through rowing for many years and who is going to do an outstanding job at that awesome school.

“I am delighted to see that my election commitment of a new STEM centre at Kew High School will be delivered. It is an election promise that I am very proud of, and it will be delivered.

Ms Smith paid tribute to the former principal of Kew High School, Clare Entwistle, who retired after the end of term 1 this year after 30 years of service to that school.

Mr Dare has been Vice-Chairman of the Norman A. Smith Memorial Scholarship Committee of the Waverley Sub-Branch, Returned and Services League of Australia since 2006.

He has served as Committee Member since 2005, and Sub-Branch Delegate, Returned and Services League of Australia's State Conference.

Mr Dare has been Appeals Officer, and Editor The Dispatch newsletter. He has also held the position as Sub-Branch Historian.

Mr Dare was inaugural President of the Monash Sub-Branch, National Servicemen's Association Australia. He is a Life Member.

He has been a member for five years of the South-Eastern Sub-Branch, National Servicemen's Association Australia.

He was inaugural Editor in 2011 of the National Boer War Memorial Association (Victoria), serving as a Committee Member, 2010-2017.

Mr Dare has been a Committee member of the Boer War Association of Victoria..

He is a keen military historian and his research includes Victorian enlistments in the Boer War and World War I, and identification of WWI enlistees from the former Shires of Mulgrave and Oakleigh (now the City of Monash).

Mr Dare is keen on the preservation of historical records and photographs associated with Australians in World War I. He is a member of Lodge Liberation of Freemasons Victoria, and holds the grand rank of Past Junior Grand Warden.

Push for facility at The Basin CFA

■ Bayswater MLA Jackson Taylor has been pushing in State Parliament for the construction of a new facility at The Basin CFA. “We all know just how vital ourCFA brigades are, and the whole foothills community and wider community are acutely aware of ● Jackson Taylor the need for a new, larger facility for The Basin brigade,” MrTaylor told State Parliament last week.

“They are truly a mainstay of the hills and a hub for The Basin. I was proud to have been able to secure funding last year after a strong groundswell of support right across the community and was stoked to have been able to welcome members of the brigade here into Parliament to hear the great news from the minister herself. The Basin CFA will be getting a brand-new, state-of-the-art fire station.

“It is such an important project that will have long-term and lasting benefits to my and the wider community and will provide our volunteer members with the kind of 21st century facilities they need to get on with their job of keeping us safe,” Mr Taylor said.

COVID-19 answer ■ Knox Council’s CrAdam Gill (Dinsdale Ward) believes he has found a potential solution to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Cr Gill told the May 25 Council meeting that there was recognised scientific research data from North Western University in the USA which analysed patient data from 10 countries.

Cr Gill noted the research found a correlation between low Vitamin D levels and higher COVID-19 mortality rates and encouraged the community to increase their Vitamin D intake.

73 sign petition ■ Some 73 people signed a petition about the need for increased safety on Glenburnie Rd between Langford Ave, Mitcham and Canterbury Rd, Vermont. This 620m section is a shared roadway used by pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicles.

It was successfully moved by Cr Bill Bennett, seconded by Cr Ben Stennett, that the petition be received and referred to the General Manager City Development for appropriate action and response.

O’leigh demolition ■ Monash Council has voted to issue a planning permit for a partial demolition and alteration to the existing heritage building at 4549 Portman St, Oakleigh.

The permit will allow construction of a multi-storey building for use as serviced apartments and shops, subject to a number of conditions.

■ Richard Wynne, the State Minister for Planning, is being asked to appoint an independent panel to assess all submissions to amend the Maroondah Planning Scheme.

Crs Nora Lamont and Samantha Mazzuchelli of Maroondah City Council successfully moved that all submissions be referred to the Panel. Phil Turner, the Director Strategy and Community, will assess any late submissions.

Auto connection

■ Warrandyte resident Bruce Robert Parker has been cited “for service to the community, and to the automotive industry” in this week’s honours. He has been recognised for his Rotary Club of Doncaster membership; his co-leadership of the Rotary East Timor Roofing and Training Cooperative; his former Presidency of the Australian Commando Association Victoria; as a volunteer with the Hand Brake Turn Initiative, Victoria Police, 15 years; CoFounder of the Michael Parker Foundation (education for underprivileged children in Australia, East Timor and Nepal); and for his work as Managing Director and Chairman, Headmod Group, HM Gem Engines; Managing Director, Nason Engine Parts; and former President, Engine Reconditioners Association of Australia.

Parents worry

■ Cr Lisa Cooper of Knox Council says local parents have been concerned about their children’s return to school.

Students from years three to 10 were due to return to the classroom yesterday (Tues., June 9). Cr Cooper encouraged all schools in the Knox municipality to implement social distancing, hygiene measures and staggered pick up times.

Honour for John, Lois ■ The late John Roger Wilson, formerly of Rowville was remembered in the Queen’s Birthday Honours announced on Monday (June 8).

Mr Wilson was posthumously awarded with the medal of the Order ofAustralia in the General Division (OAM) His wife Lois will receive the medal in his honour.

Mr Wilson was Grand Master of Freemasons Victoria in 2001-02.

He was a former Board Member and Chair of Committees of the Freemasons Hospital.

Mr Wilson was a member of the Richmond Football Club from 1960-2019.

He played in six senior games after being recruited from Melbourne High School.

Born on May 18, 1940, Mr Wilson died on June 15, 2019.

Services to education ■ Service to education, and to the Irish community has brought a Queen’s Birthday Honour to Dr Frances Maree Devlin-Glass of MontAlbert.

Dr Devlin-Glass has been honoured as an Independent Scholar, Devlin-Glass and Associates, since 2008.

She has been an Honorary Associate Professor, Deakin University, since 2009.

Dr Devlin-Glass is a Fellow, College of Distinguished Deakin Educators.

She has been a Member of Williamstown Little Theatre.

With her Irish literature and culture work she was Founding President and Artistic Director, Bloomsday in Melbourne, since 1994.

She was Founding Member, Melbourne Irish Studies

Seminars, and Co-Editor of The Australasian Journal of Irish Studies, since 2006.

Dr Devlin-Glass has been a member of the Tintean Editorial Collective online magazine since 2000.

Curfew follow-up

■ Monash Council says it experienced a 90 per cent reduction in cat nuisance complaints between 2012 to 2016 (from 240 to 24); thus leading to a cat curfew not proceeding in 2017.

The Council will examine if a curfew should be introduced, to possibly start in April next year.

Kay Setches recognised ■ Former Ringwood MLA Kay Patricia Setches will have the ‘AM’ post-nominal from this week after being recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.

Ms Setches, now Surf Beach , near Phillip Island, was recognised or significant service to the people and Parliament of Victoria, and to women in politics.

Ms Setches was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1982 to 1992.

She was Minister for Conservation, Forests and Lands from 1988 to 1990, Minister for Community Services from 1990 to 1992 and Minister Responsible for Child Care from 1991 to 1992.

She was born in Melbourne. She resided in Croydon from 1964, and was a shop assistant before entering politics.

She was involved in a number of community organisations, including serving as coordinator of the Maroondah Halfway House Group, a women's refuge, from 1977 to 1978 and president of the Boronia Technical School Council from 1979 to 1983.

She was also an advocate for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities.

Setches was elected to the Legislative Assembly at the 1982 state election, defeating twoterm Liberal MP Peter McArthur, and was reelected in 1985 and 1988.

Her seat of Ringwood was abolished for the 1992 election and she contested and lost the new notionally Labor seat of Bayswater as Labor were resoundingly defeated that year.

Eastern Region Issue at The Basin ■ Cr John Mortimore presented a petition with 14 signatories to the Knox City Council meeting on May 25, requesting response to a number of questions regarding tree removal and vegetation and land management.

This follows the emergency removal of three remnant indigenous trees and branches of other indigenous trees in Old Forest Rd, The Basin by a utility provider.

The petitioners state that they seek information on the type of post-assessments and maintenance measures by Council regarding trees that remain in an area where tree removal has been undertaken.

The petitioners also request clarification on Council’s education and incentives provided for responsible land and vegetation management and seek an outline of how landcapping is discouraged across the Knox municipality, particularly in areas adjacent to places of environmental significance.

The petitioners asked a broader question of how essential assets such as trees can be managed more sensitively, with a better coordinated approach between land managers and stakeholders.

Secret information ■ Confidential information about legal privileged information regarding the North East Link judicial review process was discussed at a special ‘virtual’ meeting of Manningham Council held on Thursday, May 28.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Day said he had designated this report as confidential information. The meeting was closed to the public in accordance with the Local Government Act 2020.

$24.2 mil. surplus ■ Maroondah Council has recorded an underlying surplus before capital revenues of $25.74 million for the nine months ended March 31.

This is $1.42 million ahead of the year to date forecast budget. This is primarily related to unexpended funds during the period, Councillors were told.

6-storey permit

■ Monash Council has determined to issue a planning permit for a six-storey development at 2-4 Kingsway Glen Waverley.

Council has approved a reduction in car parkling requirements, subject to certain conditions.

Jake’s report ■ Cr Jake Keogh told the May 25 meeting of Knox Council that many clubs have expressed appreciation for Council’s support and financial assistance including through waiving fees.

Cr Keogh said that volunteer community clubs are struggling but are undertaking great work and are looking out for each other.

He encouraged local sport to restart when it is safe to do so as they play an important role for local communities.

■ Boroondara Council met on Monday last week (June 1) to consider its 2020-21 budget.

Many small companies have had difficulty obtaining the Business Victoria $10,000 grant promised by the Andrews State Government. James Newbury, MLA, said last week: “Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. With economic data pointing to a deeper recession in Victoria than in other states, these businesses need support. There are still businesses that have waited up to two months to be processed for a state government Business Support Fund grant.

$11.3m for Canterbury ■ Boroondara Council will continue funding COVID-19 support and relief activities to ease the financial burden on the community.

This is part of Council’s $4.5m support and relief package, announced in April, to support businesses and residents most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the 19-20 and 20-21 financial years, says Mayor Cr Cynthia Watson.

A new community precinct will be constructed in Canterbury at a cost of $11.3m.

The new Kew Recreation Centre is projected to cost $68.04m upon completion.

More than $4million will be spent on a range of initiatives including purchase of 100 per cent green renewable electricity for our buildings and street lighting.

“We will continue to progress construction of a number of shovel ready significant projects.

Both during and after construction, the Kew Recreation Centre, Canterbury Community Precinct and Camberwell Community Centre developments will create employment opportunities for locals and Victorians,” said Cr Watson.

The budget is open for comment until July 1.

New service area

■ Manningham Council has re-opened its Civic Centre customer service counter. While the front doors were closed, the Council has been busy behind the scenes working on an upgrade to the customer service area.

There will be a newand welcoming space to provide increased accessibility and disability spaces to help all residents visit and do business. New meeting rooms will provide a comfortable and private place to meet with staff.

■ Whitehorse Council is requesting that the future regional park boundary from Springvale Rd, Forest Hill to Boronia Rd, Vermont, in particular the section east of Terrara Rd, be identified without delay.

No EFNL footy in 2020 ■ The Eastern Football Netball League has cancelled the 2020 senior season.

A joint announcement was made with the Northern Football Netball League.

Peter McDougall, NFNL Chief Executive Officer, issued a statement late last week, confirming that there would be no matches this year.

“The NFNL and EFNL Boards endorsed the recommendation from league management to cancel all senior football (including seniors, reserves and under-19s) for both men’s and women’s competitions,” said the statement.

“Both leagues remain committed to conducting junior football competitions in 2020. The NFNL is also committed to conducting its netball competitions.

“Both Leagues have been in constant communication with their respective clubs, the other major metropolitan leagues and AFL Victoria throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Recent feedback from senior clubs indicated an overwhelming wish for the future of the 2020 season to be determined without further delay.

“Both the NFNL and EFNL believed that cancelling their senior competitions is the only viable decision that will ensure the long-term sustainability of their clubs and the leagues.

“TheNFNL and EFNLhave the health and safety of not only their participants but the wider community at front of mind in making these judgements.

“Both leagues have a clear obligation to protect players, coaches, volunteers, officials, umpires, staff, supporters, and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2% rates increase

■ Boroondara Council is planning a 2 per cent rate increase. The PR spin is that this increase amounts to under 60 cents per week for a median value residential property.

Knox News $2m for recovery

■ A further $2 million will be invested in services and programs to spearhead local community and economic recovery and boost support for those most impacted by COVID-19.

Knox City Council Mayor, Nicole Seymour, said the new package will accelerate recovery of the local economy and facilitate community confidence and resilience while addressing the hardship, instability and isolation impacting the Knox community as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

To qualify for these schemes, businesses have to register for a MyGov ID, which is quite different to the MyGov department.

Applicants need to supply forms of identification such as a birth certificate, driver’s licence and Medicare card.

Applicants can only use a smart device. Heaven help people who don’t have a computer, or have computer literarcy limitations.

No humans seem to be able to over-ride the almighty computer systems.

If you do not have these standards of identity verification, you can disqualified from receiving any financial assistance.

The set-up is discriminatory and unfair.

■ Mont Albert was again selected for the depredations of burglars. This time it. was Cook's pharmacy, near the intersection of Union and White Horse roads. This shop contains the agency for the State Savings Bank, and after forcing the front door an unsuccessful attempt was made to blow up the safe. The thieves decamped with about 30/- worth of property.

Top honour for Bill ■ Kew East-based pharmacist Bill Scott was made a member (AM) in the general division of the Order of Australia on Monday (June 8).

The honour citation reads “for significant service to the pharmacy profession at the state and national level”.

Mr Scott graduated with his Bachelor of Pharmacy degree from the Victorian College of Pharmacy, in 1969.

He married Helen, a fellow pharmacy graduate, and they purchased their first pharmacy at Whittlesea in 1972.

The needs of the Whittlesea community led Mr Scott to become a member of the Whittlesea Shire Council, and later Chairman of the Regional Organisation of Councils.

At one time, he was involved with 23 local committees (including President of the Whittlesea Health Centre, Board member Bundoora Aged Care Centre, Chair of Whittlesea Severance Committee, and Chair of the Promote Whittlesea Association).

He was President of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia Victorian Branch from 1996-2005, and Vice-President of the national body during that time.

He was named Distinguished Alumni, Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Monash University in 2016.

He was nominated as a distinguished Old Paradian Award, in 2006.

Several years ago, Professor Bill Charman, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at Monash University, paid

MP praises Ainslie Park ■ Croydon MLA David Hodgett spoke last week in State Parliament in praise of Ainslie Parklands Primary School and its principal Brett MacKenzie.

“The school is working towards an upgrade of its playground, looking at a significant playground restoration in the space at the back of the school adjacent to the oval,” Mr Hodgett told the Legislative Assembly.

“This area is also used as public space, as people use the walking paths in and around Ainslie Park, including those who use the Ainslie Park sporting ground.

“The school is seeking funding of $50,000 for the playground play space and a further $50,000 for the required shade sails over the space.

“I am advocating on behalf of the school for a funding grant and will continue to lobby the government and the department seeking funding opportunities.

“The school is also working with Maroondah council exploring the upgrading of the school oval, which in turn could be used as an additional playing field as part of the Ainslie Park sporting precinct.

“I have spoken about this exciting education and sporting precinct before and listed some of the works that have been undertaken and are underway or are planned for future investment.

“So in addition to having an upgrade of playground facilities for the benefit of all students it would also add to the overall improved facilities at Ainslie Parklands Primary School.

“While the school community have been doing terrific things with their courtyard and orchard gardens, the oval and the playground at the back of the school remain run down and in

Council News Vermont urgency

■ “Will the government please provide urgent funding to build a new gymnasium at Vermont Secondary College?” asked Forest Hill MLANeil Angus in State Parliament last week.

“I am regularly contacted by members of the VSC community lamenting the fact that there is no adequate gym facility at the college,” Mr Angus said. “This is most obviously highlighted by the fact that the current gym can barely accommodate half of the now more than 1500 students at the college.

“VSC is a school with an outstanding reputation, which is why it continues to grow. Over recent years, under various governments, there have been some tremendous infrastructure improvements at the college; however, there has been no change to the gym facilities since they were built for a school of several hundred students back in the 1970s.

“There is no building in the school where all the students and staff can gather, including for assemblies.

“With almost 800 students undertaking compulsory PE each week, the gym can no longer accommodate the ongoing class demands.

“I have raised this matter many times in this place, most recently on November 12 last year. I thank the Minister for his response to me but again reiterate the desperate need at the college.

“Given the extensive funding currently being provided to schools throughout Victoria, it is an opportune time,” MrAngus said.

Burwood sports

■ Will Fowles, MLA for Burwood, has asked about community sporting clubs and associations which should be able to apply for support under the $40 million community sport sector short-term survival package.

“Over the last week I have been speaking with clubs in my electorate about this funding, and they have been very grateful to receive this help from the Andrews Labor government,” said Mr Fowles.

“These grants will help with clubs’ basic running costs and support them in returning to play, which I know that the clubs in Burwood are itching to do. They are itching to get back onto the pitches and fields, the tracks and the courts of Burwood.

“Many are also in discussions with their local councils regarding the community sports infrastructure stimulus program—an outstanding $68 million investment from the Andrews Labor government for building and upgrading community sports facilities.

“My question to the minister is: how many sports clubs in the electorate of Burwood have been successful in receiving the short-term survival grant?” Mr Fowles said.

Balwyn calling ■ Emeritus Professor Roger James Pepperell, of Balwyn, was given an AM recognition in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, “for significant service to medical education, particularly to obstetrics and gynaecology”..

Premier addreses forest logging issues ■ Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews last week answered a question in State Parliament about native forest logging.

Ellen Sandell, MLA for Melbourne (Australian Greens) asked: “My question is for the Premier. Last week in a landmark case the Federal Court ruled that native forest logging in Victoria is not complying with the rules put in place to protect our threatened species like the endangered greater glider and Leadbeater’s possum.

“In fact the government’s logging agency here in Victoria is breaking the law and therefore will no longer be exempt from federal environment laws.

“It seems pretty clear after this ruling that native logging in Victoria is simply no longer tenable, so will the government now bring forward the transition out of native forest logging so that workers and industry can receive transition payments now and logging can cease now rather than in five or 10 years?”

Mr Andrews replied: “I thank the member for Melbourne for the question, and I am aware of the judgement that she raises in her question.

“What I would simply say is this: the government has outlined its timeline for a staged transition to end native timber harvesting.

“We believe that this industry is not sustainable into the medium and long term.

“We believe that it is not appropriate to simply ignore that fact and then have this industry collapse.

“There will be many, many more job losses than a managed transition.

“Now, I would accept not every Victorian agrees with that position.

“Well, I accept that not every Victorian, including the member for Narracan, does necessarily agree with the policy decision that the government has made.

“I would have thought we could have a civil debate about this. That is certainly what I am interested in doing.

“I accept the passion with which the member for Melbourne approaches this subject, but what I would say to her is this: the government has laid out a fully funded, fully costed plan. It will involve pain.

It will involve transition.

“But it is far better than the alternative, which is to simply allow this industry to die over a long period of time without the transition to other employment and without the transition to support every worker, every business and every community for whom native timber harvesting is a significant industry. That is not our approach.

“However, whilst I am urged by the member for Melbourne to bring forward the timetable, I cannot make

■ Parks Victoria will delay its cull of brumbies in the Alpine area until winter after brumby supporters sought an injunction in the Supreme Court.

The announcement is the latest move in a two-year battle between Parks Victoria and those who want to see the brumbies protcted of the grounds of heritage value.

Clarity sought

■ Timber industry associations are seeking more clarity around native timber harvesting legislation following a recent VicForests court case.

On May 27, the Federal Court found that VicForests failed to comply with national environmental laws designed to protect threatened species.

Safety concerns

■ An online petition to build a dirt jump track in Doreen for teenage riders has gained more than 1000 signatures after their track was bulldozed by council.

The group had taken it upon themselves to build a track for ‘advanced riders’ with dirt jumps at Hill Top Park, something they said they couldn’t do at a skate park.

City of Whittlesea council bulldozed the jumps on two occasions due to safety concerns and the environmental impact to the grassland.

Observations This House

■ The raucous public assembly of Parliament hides the machination taking place behind the scenes in James Graham’s This House.

Historical in scope and length, (it runs for 2½-hours), the play dramatises the fractious personal and political interactions between the party whips of James Callaghan’s Labour Government and their counterparts from the conservative party.

The class distinction and regional stereotypes (the Welsh, Irish and Scots) place this piece firmly within the borders of the UK, but the political intrigue of the Westminster system is relatable especially when there is a hung parliament fighting for survival.

The gentlemen’s agreement of ‘pairing’ is denied. A member of the opposition would stand down and not vote if a sitting Member of Parliament was legitimately absent on government business or incapacitated. The ensuing stratagems and personal confrontations is the stuff of theatre.

Graham’s historical arc takes us over the term of the Labour Party’s time in power during the 70s which was just short of the full five-year fixed term.

The characters tend to be larger than life stereotypes but, in some ways, this is a reflection of the personalities in power. Given the size of the cast, I have chosen not to name them here. One can look at the National Theatre web site for those details.

It is in Jeremy Herrin’s sharp and decisive direction and designer Rae Smith’s novel use of set that we see the full dramatic impact of this play.

The audience become the actual members of parliament as seating is pivoted to help us transition between the backroom offices and the claustrophobic confines of the House.

The pace is dynamically sustained though the inevitable flagging of pace occurs in the final stages as the dramatic demise is inevitable – a by product of history. We are following historical events and not, necessarily, the human unravelling of hubris or narcissism which would be the more identifiable.

As a master class in production, this is well worth a viewing. The physical resources of the National Theatre are on display along with character portrayals that are comic, amusing, noble and devious.

La Mama For Kids

■ This week La Mama for Kids launches The Pop Project, a weekly workshop series run over six weeks and facilitated by Cassandra Fumi.

Aimed at young people between 10-13 years old, participants will develop and complete a collective story and learn the technical side of stop-motion animation.

This can be paper, clay, object, or body animation, and they will then compose an original score.

A series of workshops will include: Week 1 and 2: The Story Week 3: The principles of animation and creating 18 frames of stop animation for the collective story Week 4: Sound and Narration. Participants will create an original pop song that ends the film and those interested will narrate and score the short film.

Week 5: Editing Week 6: A private watch party with popcorn The collective stop-motion animation short film will then be hosted by La Mama’s website so that participants' friends and family can see the results.

● Lexie Rough ■ When you are just 14, the future is full of endless career possibilities.

And for Surrey Hills teenagerAlexandra (Lexie) Rough, winning the Lido Isolation Shorts Film Festival for budding cinematographers may have just given her yet another possibility to consider, alongside her current thoughts of architecture or photography.

Run by Hawthorn's Lido Cinemas, the Isolation Shorts competition was for films under three minutes based on any topic.

Lido Cinemas said that the young film makers were restricted by government social distancing guidelines and could only involve members of their household in the film.

So the Year 9 Strathcona Girls School student persuaded her whole family to be her cast, a task made a little easier by having her Dad Jason and Mum Elisa, brother Hamish, sisters Becky and Rose and cousin Samantha on hand to be her home-grown movie stars.

The story centred on Lexie's youngest sister Rose desperately wanting help to shorten a pair of jeans, but everyone is just too busy, trying to carry on with work or study in their COVID-19 home isolation.

Without giving away the plot, the story is full of fun, surprises and a happy ending.

Being able to achieve a great storyline, fine performances and excellent cinematography is no doubt what made Lexie's film the winner - the Lido judges decided it was the best short film made by a filmmaker under 18 from more than 150 entries.

While the honour and glory is nice, there are tangible rewards - $500 and a Lido 'Golden Ticket', meaning Lexie has two free tickets to movies at the Lido for a whole year - no doubt her family of actors will expect to be invited to the movies as a reward for their efforts.

So how did Lexie come up with her idea for the film?

"Because it was based on isolation, I thought I would do something to do with home rather than at the shops, and I heard a story with a similar lot from a friend," Lexie said.

"I was thrilled and very surprised when I won, and extremely happy that my work paid off."

Congratulations Lexie, on being one of the few people in the creative industries for whom Corona isolation has boosted their career potential.

■ The NGV has announced that it will reopen to the public on June 27.

"In line with the Victorian Government's move to ease restrictions based on the advice of the Chief Health Officer, the NGV is pleased to announce it will re-open both NGV International and NGV Australia on June 27." said Tony Ellwood, Director NGV. "The wellbeing of our staff and visitors remains of the utmost importance. In accordance with Victoria Government and Culture Victoria guidelines, the NGV will ensure appropriate public health and physical distancing measures are put in place to ensure the safety of our staff and visitors," he said.

These measures will include free timed ticketing, appropriate queue management and increased cleaning off facilities, as well as increased hand sanitiser stations.

The NGV will host special interest groups from June 22, in order to give priority access to members of the community in need.

“Through our strong virtual engagement with our visitors during our temporary enclosure, we have seen how many people are looking forward to returning to the NGV and we will ensure that the Gallery continues to be a welcoming ands safe place for our community "The NGV will continue to deliver a dynamic range of virtual art, design and learning experiences for our visitors at home and will also launch a range of digital self-guided tours of the NGV Collection galleries for our visitors to enjoy on-site upon re-opening," he said.

■ A peaceful protest passing the Ramada Plaza Hotel and Suites proved that the majority of protesters have been lawful and respectful.

The real and disturbing problem is the thieves and looters taking advantage of the Police and Sherriffs who are stretched to capacity controlling the marches.

Alan Johnson, Managing Director of the Ramada Hotel and Suites, said: "Our guests are completely safe and our security is the best there is, so everyone around us is completely safe from the protests.

“It certainly has been a challenge with the protests and the Coronavirus but I want everyone to know that we are managing both situations with the best people in place and we believe that the clouds are lifting and we are very close to opening up and offering the best accommodation for all Australians who want to plan for their international travel to California when the airlines come back to Los Angeles."

Lockdown: positive spin ■ Many people have been using their extra time during the Coronavirus lockdown wisely and have adopted new habits to keep themselves busy.

In fact, a recent survey of 2000 US adults reveals that 43 per cent of people feel they've "changed their ways for the better" as a result of all the time inside these past few months.

Researchers sought to learn how habits and daily lives have changed as a result of the lockdown.

Nearly half of those surveyed expect to keep up these new hobbies, skills, and daily habits they've taken on after the lockdown restrictions are lifted. Learning new computer skills, creating podcasts, participating in online fitness classes and going for long walks are some of the new activities people have turned to as a new means to occupy their time.

The survey shows that 43 per cent of respondents feel they have "changed their ways for the better" as a result of the lockdown.

For example, about two-in-five feel their new habits have helped their overall well-being.A quarter of adults say these activities have taught them new ways to relax. They hope to continue to be their improved selves once everyone returns to their old routines.

People have become increasingly reliant on technology during the time spent cooped up at home. Families are spending more time together watching movies, while others are turning to online classes to learn new skills like computer programming or a new language.

That said, 54 per cent of respondents feel their laptops are critical to getting by right now, while 64 per centsay their cellphones have become a "lifeline" of sorts.

Nearly six-in-ten (57 per cent) wouldn't know what to do if they didn't have their TVs.

Legal jailbreak ■ Some 67,000 criminals have been released throughout the 50 states. The majority of the criminals, 43,000 of them, have been released from the nation's jails, and 24,356 were released from prisons. Given that we know the shocking degree of recidivism even among criminals more carefully selected for release, we can add victims of crime due to coronavirus jailbreak as the latest long-term death toll from COVID-19, or at least from the governmental reaction to it.

Just a few hundred deaths have been recorded out of a population of 2.2 million inmates, lower than that of the general population. In most prisons, the overwhelming majority of those who got the virus have been asymptomatic and are now already immune and have been for quite some time. Thus, there is no reason to release large numbers of convicted criminals, most of whom are young and healthy. This has everything to do with accelerating an already dangerous de-incarceration movement, which is why you shouldn't hold your breath and wait for them to be re-apprehended after the virus burns out.

Hawaii has released roughly 38 per cent of the state's entire jail population. This is a state where there are just 17 COVID-19 deaths overall and no confirmed cases in jails. Yet they emptied them of criminals. In early May, a 20-year-old Hawaiian was arrested for murder just two weeks after being released out of fear of the virus.One man was arrested for posting photos of himself at the beach after the fact.

96 per cent non-compliant ■ Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who has made national headlines for his charitable work and his opinions during the coronavirus pandemic, says he wanted to see just how Dallas was reopening its economy after retail stores and restaurants were given the go-ahead from Gov. Greg Abbott last week.

Those types of businesses, which also included malls and movie theatres, were allowed to reopen after Abbott issued an executive order. The businesses had to follow certain restrictions, such as opening at a 25 per cent capacity, and social distancing guidelines. However, questions like which businesses would choose to reopen and if they would actually practice social distancing remained for Texas residents. On his Blog Maverick website, Cuban said he looked to answer some of those questions by working with Shift Smart in order to investigate business re openings in Dallas using "secret shoppers."

To put it simply, Cuban said: "It's not good." For this project, Cuban said they called about 1,000 retail and restaurant locations based on their popularity on Yelp to see how many businesses were actually reopening that weekend. He said about one-third of those businesses were less than 50 per cent compliant with the protocols.

■ Woody Allen ripped his estranged son Ronan Farrow's "shoddy" journalism in light of a recent report calling the Pulitzer Prize-winner's reporting into question.

"Up until a couple of days ago I would have said 'Gee, this is great, he's done some good investigative journalism and more power to him, I wish him all the success in the world," the 84-year-old director said about Farrow.

"But now it's come out that his journalism has not been so ethical or honest."

Allen was referring to a New York Times column from earlier this month that panned Farrow's work, saying he "delivers narratives that are irresistibly cinematic with unmistakable heroes and villains and often omits the complicating facts and inconvenient details that may make them less dramatic."

Farrow who won a Pulitzer for his reporting on the massive Harvey Weinstein sex scandal has publicly accused his estranged father of molesting Farrow's sister, Dylan.

"Now, I found him to not be an honest journalist in relation to me at all, but I write that off because, you know, I understand he's loyal to his mother," Allen said in the interview, referring to Mia Farrow.

"But now people are beginning to realise that it isn't just in relation to me that his journalism has been kind of shoddy, and I'm not so sure that his credibility is going to last."

‘Replace Joe Biden’ ■ Barely more than half of Democrats are satisfied with former Vice-President Joe Biden as the party's presidential nominee, a new poll finds. The poll also indicated that nearly a third want to replace him. Only 54 per cent of Democratic voters want the party to keep Biden at the top of its presidential ticket

■ Two of my favourite actors are Harrison Ford (whom I have met) and Burt Lancaster.

My first memory of seeing Burt Lancaster was in the 1955 film His Majesty O'Keefe.

I have studied the list of Burt Lancaster films and apart from The Crimson Pirate, I think he never made a comedy.

His films were mainly dramas and adventure films. I thought he was great and I wanted to grow up to be just like Burt Lancaster.

There was another of my lifetime goals that went off the rails, I guess in the end you grow up to be yourself.

Burton Stephen ‘Burt’ Lancaster was born in 1913 in New York City. He was one of five children. His father was a postman and his mother died when Burt was in High School.

He had a keen interest in gymnastics as a child and formed an acrobatic duo with his friend Nick Cravat.

In later years Burt made nine films with Nick.

The pair joined a local theatrical company and also developed circus skills.

An injury forced Burt to give up his acrobatic career and he drifted into several jobs before serving in the Second World War. In 1945 he auditioned for a Broadway play and got the role. Burt was spotted by producer Harold Hecht who introduced him to director Hal Wallis.

In 1946 Burt was cast in his first screen role in The Killers and starred opposite Ava Gardiner.

He became popular and was cast in many films. He was handsome, athletic and a good character actor.

In 1953 he played Sgt Milton Warden in the classic, From Here To Eternity. His films included Sorry Wrong Number, The Rainmaker, Separate Tables, Gunfight At The O.K. Corral, Judgement In Nurembergand The Birdman Of Alcatraz.

He made seven films with fellow actor Kirk Douglas. He was a close friend of Telly Savalas.

Burt formed a production company with Harold Hecht called Hecht - Lancaster, James Hill was a silent partner. The company produced films which included Apache, Vera Cruz, Trapeze, Sweet Smell Of Success and

Australian actor Michael Pate once told me he didn't get on with Burt, Michael felt he wa opinionated and annoyed him by constantly quot ing Plato on the set of Ten Tall Men. Burt was nominated for anAcademy Award four times and won Best Actor for his role as the corrupt evangelist in Elmer Gantry in 1960.

Burt was one of the special guests at the 1977 Logie Awards in Melbourne and admired the work of Bert Newton.

Later that year Burt Lancaster rang Bert from the USA to wish him a happy birthday.

Burt Lancaster was married three times and had five children with his second wife Norma Burt suffered a stroke in 1991. He died of a heart attack in 1994 at the age of 80 after a long illness.

There was no funeral service - he was cre mated and his ashes lie under a large oak tree in Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles.

There is a small marker which simply read - Burt Lancaster 1913 - 1994.

Home grown talent

■ Chances are you might remember Katherine Firkin reporting on our TV screens. Following stints as a court reporter in the newsrooms at 3AW, Ten, Seven and Nine, Katherine used her way with words to write a fast paced, thrilling novel Sticks and Stones.

Published by Penquin, there is a follow-up novel in its first draft. Katherine is currently working in New York for CBS. Amongst her awards for reporting include a major accolade from the AFL for her football commentary.

■ Troubadour Music and DVO Media are creating online music content with their first TV style episode of the Troubadour Tunes show.

In an effort to continue profiling local talent during the current shut down of live events, the completely free to watch show features Greg Champion, Khristian Mizzi and Jetty Road.

Filmed live at the Highlander Bar in Melbourne, Troubador Music's Andrew Pattison says the plan is to host more such free shows with viewers being invited to make a donation to the artists performing.

Music grants ■ APRA AMCOS has launched a new sustainability fund to help its members continue to create new music during the coronavirus pandemic.

Members of the collection society who are located anywhere in the world, and at any career stage, are eligible to apply for a $2000 grant.

■ John Rozentals looks at one of the wineries leading a Yarra revival.

In the 1860s Victoria's Yarra Valley, on the eastern fringes of Melbourne, was in its first viticultural heyday and one of the most important wine regions in Australia.

Wineries included Yering Station, created in 1838, and Hubert de Castella's Yeringberg, both of which had won major European awards.

Decay set in shortly after - the combined effect of the scourge of the vine louse phylloxera, general economic malaise and changing tastes - and by the 1930s the area had largely adopted dairying as a source of income.

It wasn't till the 1960s and later that the wine industry revived, with names such as Coldstream Hills, Chandon, and again Yering Station prominent.

These days the valley has a multitude of growers, making tablewines and sparkling base, both often from cool-climate varieties such as chardonnay and pinot noir.

Winemakers such as Yering Station's Willy Lunn are spoken of with the reverence once reserved for greats such as Hubert de Castella, and the area is certainly well and truly on the move and near the forefront of Australian viticlture.

Chardonnay ($26): Like the Hesketh 2019 Art Series Lost Weekend Chardonnay reviewed recently, this dry white makes it through length and structure rather than sheer weight of varietal flavour, though look for some peachy stonefruit touches.

The wine certainly has the acidity to cut through quite creamy sauces. Try it with rich seafood dishes.

Yering Station 2017 Little Yering Shiraz ($20): There's certainly no problem here with primary dark-berry and dried-spice flavours.

The dry red shows a rich mix of both and comes up quite silky.

If the wine has a problem it's with nasty and quite persistent sulphides.

Try decanting the wine to open it up and get rid of those, then have it with red-sauced pasta or pizza.

WINE OF THE WEEK Yering Station 2018 Pinot Noir ($40): Look, there's no easy way to break this.

Drinking good pinot is a wealthy person's hobby.

The cheaper Yering Station 2018 Village Pinot Noir ($26) certainly didn't light my fire - I am listening to The Doors - but this did, starting with its beaut bright red colour. It's a powerful wine with ample cherry flavours and promises of great things to come. Do this a favour and drink with roast venison ... or hide it at the back of a white-drinker's cellar.

Movies, DVDs with Jim Sherlock, Aaron Rourke What’s Hot and What’s Not in Blu-Rays and DVDs FILM: THE CALL OF THE WILD: Genre: Adventure/Family/Drama.

Cast: Harrison Ford, Karen Gillan, Dan Stevens, Bradley Whitford.

Year: 2020.

Rating: PG. Length: 105 Minutes.

Stars: **½ Review: A domesticated St. Bernard/Scotch Collie dog named Buck is stolen from his California home and sold to freight haulers in 1890s Yukon where he crosses paths with a man named John Thornton, and the two embark on an adventure in the wilds of the Yukon.

This latest big budget, big screen Disney adaptation based on the classic novel by Jack London has all the bells and whistles you could wish to expect: spectacular scenery, an abundance of thrills, chills, spills, excitement, adventure and moments of heartfelt poignancy between a man and his dog, it's all there, however, for all it has to offer, the overwhelming use of CGI, including the dog, and heavy-handedness of implausibility in situations, all may be too distracting to the more astute of the audience members.

At a sprightly 77 Harrison Ford is perfectly cast as loner John Thornton, and is supported by a stellar supporting cast that includes Karen Gillan (Jumanji: The Next Level), Dan Stevens (Downton Abbey, Beauty and the Beast) and Bradley Whitford (Get Out, The West Wing), but the real star here is not the computer generated dog, it is Oscar winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan), who captures the spectacular and breathtaking beauty of the Yukon terrain in Canada with jaw-dropping results.

Directed by Chris Sanders, whose previous credits include the animated hit "How To T rain Your Dragon" (2010) and written for the screen by Michael Green (Blade Runner 2049, Logan), this comes hot on the heels of Disney's similarly 2019 themed (and far superior) "Togo" with Willem Dafoe and based on the true story of the sled dog who led the 1925 serum run, but nonetheless, "The Call of the Wild," is a beautifully filmed and fun adventure story, albeit a flawed one, and a story that will continue to enthral audiences for generations to come, even if the dog here is born from a computer.

FILM: DOWNHILL: Genre: Comedy/Drama.

Cast: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Will Ferrell, Miranda Otto.

Year: 2020.

Rating: M. Length: 86 Minutes.

Stars: ** Review: Barely escaping an avalanche during a family ski vacation in the Alps, a married couple is thrown into disarray as they are forced to re-evaluate their lives and how they feel about each other.

A remake of the 2014 Swedish film "Force Majeure" by Ruben Ostlund, with the exception of the spectacular Austrian cinematography, this fails to reach the emotional heights or intense power of the aforementioned foreign language film in every way, however, it succeeds to a point, but only barely, as it all too often shows signs of reaching a peak, but then fails to grasp its intended reach.

Though far from anything totally memorable, stars Will Ferrell and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss are fun to watch at times through moments of brief humour as it works its way through the turmoil and conflict of a marital drama, however, there's definitely an unfulfilling mismatched chemistry between the two veterans of comedy that should have attained compelling and thought provoking results, most notably in the dramatic stakes, even though both stars are extremely gifted and are fully capable of fulfilling, but not so.

Like all too many Hollywood remakes of acclaimed foreign language films, "Downhill" is far from being a total loss or a disaster, it's just a tame, less spirited, less energetic and shadowy remake of a far superior film that would be better served to catch, but overall, this is an ineffective and inoffensive time-filler to pass away its relatively short 86 minute running time, and unlike its original source film, this would have been far more suited as a streaming movie of the week.

FILM: UNDERWATER: Genre: Action/Drama/Horror.

Cast: Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick.

Year: 2020.

Rating: M. Length: 95 Minutes.

Stars: ** Verdict: A crew of aquatic researchers work to get to safety after what they believe is an undersea quake that devastates their subterranean laboratory, but the crew has more than the ocean seabed to fear.

Rourke’s Reviews Bring Me Home

■ (MA). 108 minutes. Available now on Blu-ray and DVD. Managing to be both a bruising drama and a tense thriller, Bring Me Home is an impressive effort, even more so considering the writer/director is making his feature film debut.

Lee Young-ae (who hasn't been seen on the big screen since 2005) stars as Jung-yeon, who, along with her husband Myeong-guk (Park Hae-joon), have been searching for their young son Yoon-su, who was snatched while at a playground six years before.

Jung-yeon works long hours as a nurse while her husband travels far and wide handing out flyers and following up potential tips, to no avail.

When Jung-yeon receives credible information that Yoon-su may have been seen at a coastal fishing village, she makes the long journey there, but is met with resistance by the people residing at the specific locale, which include highranking police officer Hong (Yoo Jae-myung), and the distraught mother soon starts suspecting that these strangers are hiding something.

Debutant director Kim Seungwoo carefully lays the groundwork, developing both Jung-yeon's journey and the environment she encounters in confident, measured fashion, and is startlingly adept at knowing when to deliver a jarring body blow.

The subject his screenplay tackles is certainly relevant, but never feels exploitative, and only during the finale do conventional elements creep in.

The cast is superb, with Lee (Joint Security Area, Sympathy For Lady Vengeance) and Yoo (The Beast, Moonlit Winter) particular stand-outs.

Some viewers may find aspects of the material distressing, but Bring Me Home never becomes overtly graphic, wanting instead to concentrate on the characters' psychological state of mind, leading a fine film to a moving, emotionally satisfying ending. Note : A multiregion player is required.

Made up of five terrifying tales, this is a stylishly handled piece that perfectly balances black humour with gore and genuine scares.

Romero, best known for his series of Dead films, beautifully evokes the striking colours and designs of a comic book, and teaming with best-selling author Stephen King, infuses the material with absolute care and attention, showing what an obvious labour of love this was for the both of them.

A first-rate cast includes Hal Holbrook, E.G. Marshall, Ed Harris, Leslie Nielsen, Ted Danson, Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, and Viveca Lindfors.

Though the 1987 sequel and the recent TV series were huge disappointments, the original Creepshow is still knockout viewing, and deserves to be rediscovered by a whole new generation.

It is a pity the local blu-ray is missing the extensive extras that are on the UK. and US editions.

Uncommon Valor

■ (M) (1983). 105 minutes. Available now on Blu-ray and DVD. The first of a string of 80's movies that involved ex-vets returning to Vietnam to rescue POW's held in camps long after the war had ended, Uncommon Valor is the best of the bunch (others include Rambo II and Missing In Action), but a poor script prevents an intriguing premise from being fully realised.

Gene Hackman stars as Colonel Jason Rhodes, whose son was captured by North Vietnamese soldiers in 1972, and 10 years later, aided by Frank's old platoon, returns to a country that still contains much personal and national pain.

The foundation is there to create a heady mix of political commentary and explosive action, but writer Joe Gayton never develops any of the compelling elements beyond the basics, and while direction by Ted Kotcheff (Wake In Fright, First Blood), is generally slick, it can't quite overcome the script's shortcomings.

The strong cast also includes Fred Ward (Southern Comfort, ■ (M) (1982). 120 minutes. Avail- Remo), Tim Thomerson (Near able now on Blu-ray and DVD. Dark), Randall 'Tex' Cobb (RaisWith big screen comic book ad- ing Arizona), and a young Patrick aptations a matter of routine now, it is great to go back and revisit Swayze.

While it never reaches its full Creepshow, the late George A. Romero's loving tribute to the hor- potential, Uncommon Valor does ror comics of the 1950s, and argu- just enough to entertain.

RATING - *** ably remains the best representation of the medium on film.

What’s Hot and What’s Not Continued from Left Column Slick, tight, loud and claustrophobic action creature-feature- horror pot-boiler that borrows heavily from so many predecessors of the genre, from Ridley Scott's "Alien" to James Cameron's "The Abyss," as well as many before and in-between, and other than the cast, has nothing new to offer.

Star Kristen Stewart complete with a Sigourney Weaver "Alien 3" style haircut, does well under the circumstances, as do the rest of the cast that includes veteran French actor Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones) and T.J. Miller (Deadpool 1-2), but the failings here lay in the story and screenplay by Brian Duffield, along with Adam Cozad, and the weak and uninspired direction by William Eubank.
