ACTION PLAN FOR YOUTH

■ Frankston’s Youth Council is urging young people to have their say on a new four-year Frankston City Council Youth Action Plan.

Purpose of the Youth Action Plan is to: ■ Identify the current and future needs of young people aged 12-24 within the City of Frankston ■ Plan services, programs and facilities for our young people ■ Build on existing initiatives and identify opportunities to support young people ■ Provide opportunities for youth participation and advocate on behalf of young people Frankston City Youth Council member Laura said: “It's such an incredible opportunity to be able to have a say in the Youth Action Plan, because it ensures that the change implemented as a result is relevant and meaningful to the young people who are currently involved in shaping our community.

“It's such an uplifting, exciting position to be in as a young person, because Frankston is a community that holds a high value to the input of its members, regardless of age; to have as many young people involved in contributing their feedback and ideas means that not only will we be empowered to continue to represent and

advocate for our passions (big or small), but that genuine positive change for the lives of ourselves and emerging generations will take place as a result.'”

Frankston City Mayor Cr Nathan Conroy applauded the Youth Council for leading the charge.

“Clearly, the Youth Action Plan must be informed by the needs of young people themselves so I’m grateful and proud our Youth Council are instrumental in spreading the word about the draft plan and how young people can provide feedback.”

“The action plan must reflect the needs and aspirations of our young people if we are to have a city and community that’s truly strong and inclusive,” said Cr Conroy.

Parents, carers and community groups are also encouraged to read the plan and provide feedback.

Exhibition at Cube 37

■ Artist Penelope Davis creates jellyfish forms from a collage of components.

Taking the detritus of contemporary technologies and combining these with organic source material such as leaves and seaweed, Davis makes casts in silicone, then uses these casts themselves as forms.

The artist hand sews these ‘skins’ together to create delicate hybrid forms that resemble jellyfish.

Davis’s works reflect on, and embody, a painstaking attempt to recuperate an appreciation for the natural world, our symbiotic relationship with it, and the necessity of our shared future.

Patrons can view Davis’s striking jellyfish forms in the Sea Change exhibition at Frankston’s Cube 37.

Local Briefs Awards for teachers

■ Two outstanding teachers from Frankston North have been announced as winners in the 2022 Commonwealth Bank Teaching Awards.

■ Peter Langham, Principal, Monterey Secondary College - When Peter was appointed Acting Principal of Monterey Secondary College in 2019, he was confronted with extremely low staff morale and low student engagement. Peter introduced individual case management for students and trauma-informed practice. In 2021, the school recorded their best VCE scores in over 10 years and completion of senior certificates was 100 per cent, up from 65 per cent a few years prior.

The school now exceeds the state average on all measures of student engagement.

■ Jessica Cridland, Teacher, Monterey Secondary College - Jessica has integrated trauma-informed practices and introduced innovative sporting programs to transform her student’s wellbeing and engagement in learning. Central to Jessica’s practice is her commitment to inclusion. She is passionate about providing learning pathways for each of her students who count amongst the most marginalised and trauma-induced young people in Victoria.

1001 Steps funds

■ The City of Casey has welcomed $1.2 million in funding from the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program to undertake works at the popular 1001 steps in Narre Warren North to construct an accessible path.

The funding will be used to construct an accessible access path for people of all abilities to enjoy this wonderful experience, from the carpark area of the 1001 steps through to the top main viewing point.

The new raised path will be fully accessible to users of all ages and physical abilities, with handrails where required and rest points with seating at regular intervals.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff welcomed the funding and thanked the Federal Government for its investment into one of the City of Casey’s most popular attractions, Bayview Park.

“The City of Casey is committed to providing parks that are inclusive for all. The addition of this accessible path will allow people of all abilities to access and enjoy this outstanding attraction, which features sweeping views across Casey, Western Port and Port Phillip Bay,” Ms Duff said.

Bruce MHR Julian Hill said it’s terrific that the 1001 steps will be upgraded with the Federal Government’s support.

“I’m especially excited there will be accessible grades so more people can make it to the top and enjoy the views,” Mr Hill said.

Following some slight delays due to current demands being faced across the infrastructure sector, construction of the first stage of the accessible path commenced this month.

Stage two is scheduled to begin early next year.

Truck policy change

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire is updating its Food Truck Policy to make it easier for local mobile food and drink vendors to sell their coffee, smoothies, food and treats from their vehicles.

Each year the Council allocates static permits for Peninsula locations and roving residential permits via an expressions of interest process.

The main changes proposed to the Policy are: ■ an increase in the length of permits from one to three years ■ setting annual site fee as per our Fees and Charges Schedule ■ beginning the licence period on May 1 every year (permit fees must be paid in full

by August 1) ■ issuing additional winter only permits providing electricity at all sites (where possible) ■ increasing residential roving permits from two to four ■ growing current sites and new sites.

Drugs seized at Bayles ✖

VIPER Taskforce officers, on July 7, were involved in a series of proactive FPO searches linked to the Comanchero Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. During a search at a residential property on Domaine Drive, Berwick, Police located drugs believed to be methylamphetamine and almost $50,000 cash. A 37-year-old man, who is an exComanchero OMCG member, and a 33year-old woman were both arrested and charged with drug and proceeds of crime offences.

New parking technology has been telling passengers at Beaconsfield and Berwick stations what car parking spaces are available before they even leave home. The trial is part of the State Government’s Car Parks for Commuters Program, which is working on upgrades at Victorian railway stations to make it easier for everyone to catch the train. Live car parking information is shared through the dedicated Smart Car Parking Trial app, providing real time information about where spaces are available.

■ The Springvale Divisional Response Unit and Critical Incident Response Team has arrested two men and a woman, with one charged with a raft of serious offences, including drug trafficking and firearm related offences.

The arrests were made on Tuesday last week (July 12) following an early morning search warrant at a residential address on Boundary Drain Rd, Bayles.

A number of items were seized during the warrant, including: ■ A bolt action rifle with scope ■ Approximately 250 .22 calibre ammunition rounds ■ A box containing approximately 30 rounds of assorted ammunition ■ Small quantities of what is alleged to be methylamphetamine, GHB and cannabis ■ A flick knife ■ Knuckle dusters A 27-year-old Bayles man has been charged with the unlicensed possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition, trafficking a drug of dependence, possession of methyl-amphetamine, GHB and cannabis, possession of prohibited weapons, and dealing with the proceeds of crime.

Cardinia Shire Council has adopted its 2022–26 Budget, following a final round of community consultation on the draft document in April and May this year. The Council received 95 submissions in this latest round of community consultation on the 2022–26 proposed Budget.

Dandenong Magistrates Court on August 1.

A 25-year-old Bayles woman has been charged with the possession of methyl-amphetamine, GHB and Cannabis, and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

The woman appeared before the Dandenong Magistrates’ Court where she received an $800 fine.

A 27-year-old Bayles man was issued with a cannabis caution at the scene and later released.

■ Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has approved a request by Cr Paul Mercurio to take leave in order to contest the forthcoming state election.

Cr Mercurio’s leave began last Wednesday (July 13), and end the day after the polls close in the November election.

He has asked to forgo his councillor allowance during the period of his leave.

The Victorian Labor Party has endorsed Cr Mercurio as its candidate for the seat of Hastings.

“Our councillors have a responsibility to represent the whole of the Mornington Peninsula, not just the ward in which they were elected,” said Mayor Cr Anthony Marsh.

"Any issue you would usually speak to Cr Mercurio about you can discuss with me, Deputy Mayor Lisa Dixon or any of the other councillors.”

Port Phillip Crime Investigation unit are investigating after a man exposed himself in St Kilda. Investigators have been told the man exposed himself and was performing a lewd act in the front courtyard of a home on Bath Place on Sunday, May 22 about 1.30am. The offender banged on a window at the home before the victim yelled at him and he fled the area. The man is described as being Caucasian in appearance, 18-20-years-of-age, with a thin build and short dark hair. At the time of the offence, he was wearing a white shirt a black jacket, white runners and was carrying a backpack. Police have released CCTV and an image of a male they believe can assist with their enquiries.

■ A sum of $60,000 in funding has been granted to undertake priority repairs to ramp surfaces, pontoons and the installation of two hoists at the Patterson River boat ramp in Carrum to improve safety and access.

Work is also progressing on stage two of a priority upgrade to the Governor Rd boat ramp in Mordialloc – with improvements to car parking set to be complete in coming weeks.

It complements work undertaken last year to install new pontoons at the boat ramp and the addition of an accessible pontoon at nearby Pier Rd, providing all-abilities access onto the bay or along Mordialloc Creek.

In Rye, nearly $100,000 in funding will be put towards jetty repairs at the busy boat ramp, as part of the Government’s Better Boating Fund Structural Maintenance Grants Program.

Around 10,000 brown trout and 10,000 rainbow trout will also be stocked into Devilbend Reservoir on the Mornington Peninsula in coming days.

■ Police are appealing for public assistance following a hit-run collision in Dandenong.

It is understood a car and cyclist collided at the intersection of Morewell Ave and Moomba Pde about 8.45pm on Wednesday, July 13.

The cyclist, a 39-year-old Dandenong man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains in a stable condition.

Police were told the vehicle, believed to be a white Toyota Aurion, stopped briefly then fled the scene westbound along Moomba Pde.

■ The City of Casey is inviting community members to have their say on the draft Hampton Park Hill Development Plan to help shape the precinct.

Located on Hallam Rd in Hampton Park, the Development Plan intends to build on opportunities for the precinct to facilitate the waste and resource recovery needs of the community, while providing more employment opportunities and large open park spaces.

The Hallam Road Waste and Resource Recovery Hub has been identified by the Victorian Government through the State-wide Waste and Resource Recovery Implementation Plan as a significant waste and resource recovery site.

The Plan recognises that there are limited locations for new waste and resource recovery infrastructure within proximity to Melbourne’s growing population and seeks to retain existing sites which are currently used for waste and resource recovery as a priority.

Peninsula crime spree ■ Detectives from the Southern Metro Regional Crime Team have arrested six youths in Seaford in relation to a number of offences across the course of a week.

Police will allege the group of youths stole two vehicles on July 10, a white Subaru from Safety Beach, and a silver Land Rover from Mt Martha, before committing a series of aggravated burglaries in Mt Martha, Safety Beach, Mount Waverley, Edithvale, Mordialloc, Dandenong South, Montmorency, and Eltham between July 10-14.

It is alleged at approximately 3am on Monday last week (July 11), a silver Volkswagen and a silver BMW were stolen from a residential address in Mount Waverley, with a silver Kia allegedly stolen from a residential address in Eltham at approximately 4am on We4dnesday (July 13).

All three vehicles are currently outstanding.

At approximately 1.30am on Thursday morning (July 14), the allegedly stolen white Subaru and silver Land Rover were observed travelling north on Church St, Beaumaris.

Police attempted to intercept the vehicles before the offenders allegedly drove at police, causing damage to two police vehicles then fleeing the scene.

Police Air Wing tracked the Subaru from the air, before arresting the four occupants of the vehicle in Seaford.

A further two people were arrested

Cardinia feedback

■ Cardinia Shire Council is seeking community feedback on its bookable hard waste service to determine current service awareness and satisfaction levels.

The Council this month moved from a blanket collection service twice yearly to a bookable service available year-round.

The bookable service is available to every household in Cardinia Shire that gets its bins collected by Council. Each household, including rental properties, can book two free hard waste collections per calendar year.

Existing service users will soon receive an email with a satisfaction survey to complete. The Council is also seeking general feedback from other residents who have not yet used the bookable hard waste service.

These service awareness and satisfaction surveys will provide Council with information about: ■ Existing awareness levels and knowledge about the service ■ What the barriers are to service take up ■ Current service user satisfaction levels ■ The ways the service is being currently used The survey results will help inform any service adjustments (within contractual scope) and communications activities required to improve service awareness, take up, correct usage, and satisfaction.

Six times over the limit: Police

■ A man has returned an alleged reading of more than six times the legal alcohol limit after crashing into two parked cars in Hoppers Crossing.

Police were called to Willmott Drive at Derrimut Rd to reports of the crash about 8.10pm on Friday (July 15).

Investigators have been told the driver attempted to drive off from the scene but was followed by witnesses who blocked in the vehicle until Police arrived.

The driver, a 49-year-old Hoppers Crossing man, was found to be unlicensed and returned an evidentiary breath test of 0.309 He is expected to be charged on summons with a range of offences including unlicensed driving and exceed prescribed concentration of alcohol.

Local Theatre Tote Hotel’s 40th

■ The Tote Hotel in Collingwood will present a new series of live music shows as part of its year long 40th anniversary celebration.

The music shows include the Kasumen Records showcase on August 27. The Melbourne based record label shows off some of their favourites and the show features the Paul Kidney Experience, Brown Spirits, Heavy Amber, Baby and New Estate and more.

On September 10, Australian punk rock band X will celebrate 40 years of the album X(aspirations), performing it from start to finish for one night only.

An Ian Rilen tribute gig will be presented on October 1 where friends and collaborators will come together to the Australian musician's songs from Rose Tattoo to X, and his solo work with the Love Addicts.

On November 12, the post-punk band These Immortal Souls will present their first show since 1998, with the songs performed by all the remaining band members and an array of guest singers.

■ The ABC in association with VicScreen has commenced filming its six-part second season of The Newsreader.

Vale Cliff Peel

■ There are people in your life who make a wonderful and lasting impression, and journalist Cliff Peel was one of them.

A long-term senior ABC journalist (among many other callings), Cliff succumbed to cancer aged 86, after a three-year battle.

My indelible memory of Cliff goes back to my first day as a cadet journalist in the ABC Newsroom four decades ago.

It was January and Cliff was my afternoon Chief of Staff, and in the tough world of the newsroom, Cliff was kind and erudite, and I knew I could always ask him for advice.

Long before it became trendy, Cliff maintained an amazing level of fitness by riding to work every day.

A couple of years later I had escaped the newsroom to become a 3LO (now ABC Radio Melbourne) producer, and later on, a floating ABC announcer.

But while I had left the newsroom, Cliff was someone I enjoyed seeing outside of work, and I have lovely memories of Cliff being a guest at my wedding.

He gave Allan and me the loveliest and most innovative present – two bottles of Hardy’s Vintage Port, with special instructions on the label to open the first one on the date of our 15th wedding anniversary, and the second one on our 20th wedding anniversary, As we have just celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary, Cliff obviously thought we would last.

Before the days of Dan Murphy’s and First Choice discount liquor stores, Cliff had a thriving mail order business with several classy Australian wineries.

Journalists are well known for enjoying a drink, but sadly our incomes don’t generally allow the funds to buy really good wine.

But Cliff’s ABC Newsroom Wine Clubmeant that he could order in bulk, and we could buy fine wine at a reasonable price from him. His other great love was cheese, and for quite some time he was president of the Victorian Cheese Club.

In conjunction with his wine club, Cliff organised wonderful day trips to Victorian wineries for a group of us, always including a splendid lunch at a good country pub.

Cliff was an inveterate traveller who wrote two wonderful books of his experiences as a journalist and of the characters he met on the road. He was always full of bonhomie, which made him excellent company.

Cliff was an inspirational friend to me, and a wonderful life partner of more than 40 years to Rob, who survives him.

Cliff was an integral part of the ABC Reunion Club, and he will be so missed by all of us – but we were so blessed to have him in our lives.

Rest peacefully, dear Cliff, and enjoy a heavenly glass of red with some excellent cheese.

From canned laughter to green screens, foley artists to house bands, this trio of unexpected works digs deep into the visual unconscious shared by anyone raised on a diet of TV and film.

London-based composer Matthew Shlomowitz creates an imaginary variety show: Hey Hey It’s Tuesday and plays with crowd reactions from televised studio audiences by giving them a new context that emphasises genuine and manufactured responses.

● Cliff Peel German composer Johannes Kreidler exploits and reassembles the green screen in ways where space and time are dislocated, animated and split apart.

Jessie Marino is from Long Island in New York. Her piece using lights, haze and screens produces a kaleidoscopic riot of light and sound.

■ A decade since delivering the ground-breaking speech, Not Now, Not Ever will see Australia’s first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard take to the stage to reflect on the now legendary words that garnered global recognition.

At Melbourne’s Hamer Hall on October 4, promoters say that Not Now, Not Ever will energise the contemporary discussion around sexism and misogyny in modern Australia, which Ms Gillard’s impassioned address from the country’s highest office helped ignite.

The evenings will be hosted by celebrated broadcaster and author Indira Naidoo, alongside an exciting line-up of guests offering their personal perspectives of this powerful moment in Australian history.

Not Now, Not Ever will explore how far we still need to go to reach equality, noting that women are not the problem, but we must instead fix the system that limits us all.

What’s On Puppets

■ An animated personality, a love of musical theatre and with a bunch of hand-held puppets who Olivia Ruggiero actually calls her Muppets – her bunch of heterosexual blokes, Puppets is all about the dating game.

“Don’t date anyone unless you intend to marry them”.

That exclamation was put to the test as Olivia grappled with many unfulfilled relationships.As a writer, performer and producer, Olivia performed with using several genres such as song, piano, dialogue and interaction with each of the Muppets, who were closeted in baskets and boxes.

Using her own words set to many wellknown musical tunes, for example, Don’t Rain on My Parade, she searched for love and personal happiness.

She used effectively and with ease the many Muppets, responding with her voice at a different level in her encounters with the dating Muppet suitors.

With her musical director and accompanist Charlotte Leamon, Olivia was able to move from pop to operatic and to musical theatre bravura with confidence and ease.

The set with a piano, assorted baskets and boxes for the Muppets, a clothes rack, a retro lounge chair and a coffee table set with wine glasses for that intimate encounter all helped with Olivia in her attempts to meet that person.

Overall, it showed how fragile the dating game is, endless text messages, no shows and of course heartbreak - all of which Olivia took in her stride.

Observations Gathering Storms

● Kerry McGinnis ■ There’s an old adage that says authors should write about what they know, if they want to be successful.

That’s something Australian author Kerry McGinnis has taken to heart in the setting of her novels, and her latest book, Gathering Storms, is set in the Gulf Country where Kerry spent much of her childhood.

It follows the story of Penny, who has to deal with the knowledge that her marriage was a sham as her husband was a bigamist.

After his demise, she sets up a plant nursery business with the man she thought was her father-in-law, because unlike his son, he is a good human being and a person Penny likes and admires.

Life is trundling along nicely in the Gulf Country until Penny’s husband’s 12-year-old daughter is dumped on Penny because she has been orphaned.

The road from here is a rocky one, but as people learn to accept each other and situations that are out of their control, life becomes full of surprises.

Most of Far North Queensland is well known to author McGinnis, as her childhood also included droving with her father and four siblings.

In Gathering Storms, her knowledge of the countryside creates wonderful mind pictures of what the landscape looks like, and the characters we meet are fully rounded and believable.

On top of that, this is one of those books that will have you glued to it , to find out what happens next.

So if you have a long plane trip coming up, some time on the beach in Queensland, or simply fancy curling up by a fire or in a warm bed with a great novel, Gathering Storms would be an ideal choice.

Looking for Alibrandi

■ Director Stephen Nicolazzo presents something very close to his heart in Looking for Alibrandi, a stage adaptation of the much-loved immigrant coming of age novel by Melina Marchetta.

The novel, published in 1992, and later made into a movie starring Pia Miranda, is a timeless tale of identity, community and belonging.

The story revolves around Josephine Alibrandi, a young Australian Italian raised by her Italian immigrant single mother and her Nonna.

As a scholarship student at a wealthy Catholic school in Sydney, at 17, she is struggling to find her own identity and longs for the ‘emancipation’ from the expectations of her Italian heritage and the racism she experiences at school.

It’s a difficult and significant year full of firsts – meeting her father for the first time, falling in love, experiencing tragic loss, and discovering a devastating family hidden secret.

The script adapted by Vidya Rajan captured the key moments and themes with fluid and articulate dialogue, laced with both humour and emotion – though there were times when dialogue was lost in the delivery.

While the storytelling was compelling, there were aspects of the production that faltered - an expansive stage and set did little to reflect the closeness of the Alibrandi family, fraught and fractured though it may have been at times, and repetitive awkward scenes with actors sitting on the floor just seemed unnatural.

There were however dazzling performances. Chanella Macri as Josie beautifully captures the angst and frustration of teen life.

The awkward scenes with love interest Jacob Coote (John Marco Desengano) and the sad news about friend John Barton (Hannah Monson), showcased her accomplished diverse abilities.

Top of the exceptional list though was Lucia Mastrantone in her dual roles as Josie’s devoted and hardworking mother and Josie’s scenestealing over-the-top breast-obsessed bestie – she was hilarious.

Jennifer Vuletic as Nonna, was unlikeable, judgemental but endearing all at the same time.

While not perfect, Looking for Alibrandi was solid fun entertainment.

Rourke’s Reviews The Black Phone

■ (MA). 102 minutes. Opens in cinemas July 21.

An effective atmosphere and three strong performances help offset a story beset with logic loopholes, as well as a screenplay that doesn’t explore its themes and ideas to a genuinely satisfying degree.

Set in a typical 70s American neighbourhood, the plot centres around a string of child abductions, carried out by a mysterious stranger called The Grabber (Ethan Hawke).

Finney (Mason Thames) and his more confident younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw) are concerned about what’s happening, but have to deal with their unstable father (Jeremy Davies), who in particular wants Gwen to stay clear of the case.

When Finney is the latest abductee, and placed in a soundproof basement by The Grabber, he has to dig deep to try and survive the abductor’s dangerous behaviour, and finds support in unusual fashion from the previous, unlucky victims.

Based on a short story by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), The Black Phone introduces a number of fascinating themes to give its rather thin premise dramatic weight, but writers Scott Derrickson (who also directs) and Robert Cargill fail to explore them adequately, making the film feel more hollow as it goes on.

It’s also completely illogical how a predator can conspicuously cruise around in an ominous black van, why parents would allow their children to still roam around freely, and how kids could act so casually in the presence of a clearly odd stranger.

Thames, Hawke, and especially McGraw, are excellent. Derrickson (who has failed to hit a bullseye with projects such as The Exorcism Of Emily Rose, Sinister, and the remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still) sadly keeps everything superficial, which is disappointing as many themes, particularly ones involving pain, grief, trauma, and the passing down of violent, abhorrent behaviour could have been examined further, which could have elevated the film to something far more memorable than what it actually is.

Technically slick, The Black Phone is okay, but is a missed opportunity.

For another thriller dealing with an unusual phone-based relationship, I recommend The Call (****) (currently streaming on Netflix), which is far superior on every level.

The Sea Beast

■ (PG). 115 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix.

After the major disappointment that was Lightyear (one of the most clunky, contradictory, and unnecessary animated films to come our way in recent years), along comes The Sea Beast to help put our faith back in American animation, with a delightful combination of impressive visuals and story smarts that should leave most audiences heartily satisfied.

Using a traditional pirate adventure as its foundation, we see a world where sea monsters are a constant threat, and Royalty sanctioned hunters are sent to find and kill them, making the oceans safer for humans to travel and trade.

The best known ship of hunters is The Inevitable, lead by the stern Captain Crow (Jared Harris), who along with his loyal right hand man, Jacob Holland (Karl Urban), and crew, have terminated many a creature, but one, infamously known as The Bluster, eludes them.

Crow’s stories have been written and released as thrilling, if exaggerated, tales, and are beloved by a young orphan by the name of Maisie (Zaris-Angel Hator), whose parents perished on another hunter ship years before.

Escaping her confines and stowing away on The Inevitable, she is soon part of a journey that will see Holland and the girl team up, and find out that the entire monster mythology may not be what it seems.

While familiar elements are present, the screenplay by Chris Williams and Nell Benjamin are surprisingly more thoughtful in how they play out their premise, and more importantly, construct and develop their characters.

Both Maisie and Holland are people worth investing in, and others such as Crow and Sarah Sharpe (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) are well written.

The duo also incorporate relevant themes such as the power of disinformation, and the long-lasting impacts of war, particularly when the reasons are vague and possibly unjustified.

Williams also makes his solo directorial effort, after strong work on Bolt and Moana, and his interest in story, character and theme over lazily reheated ‘product’ is refreshing.

Though the film might be a bit too long at just under two hours, the film-makers are clearly invested in the material, creating something that is wonderfully entertaining, and is the best animated film from the US since Turning Red (****, and is streaming on Disney+).

■ In recent times, I had the pleasure of recording a radio interview with Lee Majors and then meeting him face-to-face during the Supernova event at the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds.

I always thought Lee looked a bit like Elvis Presley and after meeting him face-to-face there is no doubt they are very similar in appearance.

Harvey Lee Yeary was born in Michigan in 1939. His parents died when he was young and he was adopted by an aunt and uncle.

Harvey graduated from Eastern Kentucky University in 1962. He was a promising footballer but took acting lessons and decided that he wanted to be an actor.

He adopted the stage name of Lee Majors and landed his first acting job as Joan Crawford's husband in the film Strait Jacket.

In 1965, he was cast as ‘Heath Barkley’ in the television western series The Big Valley. Lee was working with the legendary Hollywood actress Barbara Stanwyck and a great cast which included Linda Evans as his younger sister, and Richard Long and Peter Breck as his brothers.

Lee told me he learned a lot from working with his mentor Barbara Stanwyck who advised him to "always be on time and know your lines".

During the filming of The Big Valley he took time out to star with Charlton Heston in the film Will Penny.

His next major role was as Colonel Steve Austin, an ex-astronaut with bionic implants in The Six Million Dollar Man.

This was his biggest success and the series ran from 1973 till 1978. Australia's own Ted Hamilton was a guest star in an episode The Six Million Dollar Man playing the character of ‘Jaffe’.

Lee Majors has been married four times and has four children. His second wife was the actress Farrah Fawcett. The song MidnightTrain To Georgia was inspired by Lee Majors and Farrah Fawcett.

Songwriter Jim Weatherly phoned his friend Lee Majors one day and the call was answered

by Farrah. Jim and Farrah chatted briefly and she told him she was going to visit her mother and was taking "the midnight plane to Houston."

During their marriage Farrah was known as Farrah Fawcett-Majors. But the long periods of separation during filming took its toll and the couple divorced in 1982.

Several years later Lee Majors was cast as ‘Colt Seavers’ in The Fall Guy. His character was a Hollywood stunt man who also worked as a bounty hunter.

Lee has been constantly working in films and when I asked him about his longevity he said: "It is a matter of being right place at the right time".

Lee came to Melbourne for the Logies in 1975 and recalled enjoying a bottle of tequila on the plane with John Wayne on the flight to Australia.

Lee had heart bypass surgery in 2003 and has enjoyed good health in recent years. He is now married to Faith Majors and loves coming to Australia. Lee has just been in New Zealand filming the television series Dead Rising and ● Lee Majors working with Lucy Lawless.

Sheedy is Victorian of the Year

‘Greatest award’ for Kevin

■ AFL icon Kevin Sheedy has won four AFL premierships, but he says being awarded Victorian of the Year 2022 is the greatest award he's ever been given.

The 74-year-old said he was "extremely honoured" to win this award.

The former Essendon and inaugural GWS coach was recognized for his contribution to football, having played 789 games, including 18 grand finals and eight premierships.

Kevin is patron of Foodbank, working with the Tinker Bell Foundation to support Neale Daniher's Fight MND fundraising efforts along with his contribution to Indigenous and regional communities.

Reflecting on the honour, Kevin Sheedy remembered many of his teachers and advice he received early on in life.

"I had the best teachers," he said. "They all said just be a good person and look after the people that need it and need to be looked after."

Sheedy said he didn't plan on slowing down his community work anytime soon. "I'm in the last quarter but I tell you know I am going to have a very good last quarter," he said.

Feel good half the time

■ Feeling good is becoming an increasingly rare commodity these days, according to a new survey. In a poll of 2,000 people in the United Kingdom, it turns out adults truly feel good, both mentally and physically, less than half of the time (47 per cent). One in four respondents say they deal with anxiety at least once per week, and 40 per cent battle muscle aches on most days.

On an especially depressing note, just under six in 10 (57 per cent) say they rarely feel “on top of their game” physically. Another 61 per cent have simply accepted that aches and pains are part of their daily life. The poll, put together by My Vybe, also asked respondents why they think they’re in such bad shape. The top answers included not exercising enough, a poor diet, and “not having enough hours in a day.” ● Kevin Sheedy and Alan Johnson.

New buzz word

■ There’s inflation and then there’s shrinkflation. Inflation is easy to spot: The product you bought last month now costs a dime more. But shrinkflation is much more nefarious. The product you bought last month is the same price, the package may even appear to be the same size but there’s less of it. In some cases, a good bit less.

Notable brands to ‘shrinkflate’ their products in recent months as the American dollar continues to lessen in value include Charmin, Bounty, and Gatorade, which have all been downsized in recent months but have retained their previous prices,” the Daily Mail has reported.

“Joining the parade of downsized products is cereal stalwart Honey Bunches of Oats, which has seen the weight of its standard box, previously 14.5 ounces, lessen to 12 ounces, a reduction of roughly 17 per cent. ” Angel Soft toilet paper has also reduced its size from 425 sheets per roll to 320, while Bounty paper towels have cut their rolls from 165 sheets per roll to 147 late last year.

Gatorade also cut its bottle size from 32 ounces to 28 ounces. The fascinating thing is that companies often go to great lengths to keep their product containers the same size.

Folger’s coffee has also slashed its amount per canister, drawing controversy.

“Last month, the company elected to dramatically drop the number of ounces displayed on those canisters, previously 51 ounces, now 43.5 ounces while keeping the number of cups that it says each package will yield, at 400, the same, when confronted about the 7.5-ounce reduction per canister last month on social media, which should see a decrease of more than a dozen cups of coffee, the company cited a new, more efficient bean pressing technology as to why the cup count has not been changed.” Yeah sure.

■ Ordering takeout tonight? It might be a good idea to go pick it up yourself.A new survey finds eight in 10 food delivery workers admit to eating part of their customer’s order.

According to the poll of more than 500 delivery drivers, commissioned by Circuit Route Planner, stealing a customer’s fries or putting their sticky fingers on someone’s chicken may not even be the most disgusting thing happening on the way to the front door.

One in four drivers confess that they’ve hooked up with someone in their vehicle. One in 10 have urinated on or near a customer’s home. Another 10 per cent say they’ve had to urinate in a bottle while making their deliveries.

More than a quarter (27 per cent) add they’ve had some “less-than-professional” conversations with the people they deliver goods to. Other actions some drivers admit to that are sure to infuriate consumers include intentionally damaging packages (23 per cent), stealing packages (17 per cent), and opening and then resealing packages (17 per cent).

Police still working

NY Police problem

■ More than 1500 New York Police Department officers have either resigned or retired so far this year on pace to be the biggest exodus of officers since the statistics have been available. Some 524 cops have resigned and 1072 have retired as of May 31, NYPD pension stats show. The 1,596 total is a 38 per cent spike from the same period in 2021, when 1159 cops called it a career, and a staggering 46 per cent climb from 2020, when 1,092 left the force by the same date.

Anti-cop hostility, bail reform, and rising crime have fed into frustration among the NYPD rank and file, according to one NYPD officer who recently fled for greener pastures at a Long Island police department after 6½ years.

“The city is out of control especially since bail reform,” according to the former Queens cop, who asked to be identified only as “Joe.” The mantra now is “get out while you still can.”

Joe’s patrol gig “got worse and worse” over time, he said.

“The last few years so many people had been leaving and manpower was so low that you’d go to work and you’d answer 25 to 30 jobs a day and you’re burnt out by the end of the day,” he said.

Defence death toll

■ Suicide has been the main killer of US personnel since the September 11 attacks. More than 30,000 of them have died by their own hands since, during a period that saw about 7000 service members die in combat or training exercises, according to a project from Brown University.

Suicide in the military community is at its highest rate since 1938, according to a Department of Defence report released last month. Increasingly, those killed are women. In 2020, they accounted for 7 per cent of military suicides up from 4 per centa decade earlier, according to Department of Defence numbers.

About one in six servicemembers is female. The reports break down the deaths by gender, age and branch, but they hardly address the dramatic increase among women.

■ The Uvalde Independent School District declined to fire school police chief Pete Arredondo despite furious parents calling for his termination. The Uvalde school board did not punish the district police chief who refused to send cops into Robb Elementary School while a gunman was shooting kids dead.

Superintendent Hal Harrell told meeting attendees he was “eager” for the several investigations launched into law enforcement’s response to the shooting to “run their course,” The Texas Tribune reported.

Harrell’s remark implied the school could still take disciplinary action against Arredondo, who has been considered a cowardice “man in hiding,” pending the results of the investigations.

He also told concerned parents that students would “never” return to the Texas elementary school where Salvador Ramos, 18, killed 19 students and two teachers, and left an entire community terrified to go to school.

Arredondo, who did not attend the school board meeting, is facing furious backlash for not sending in a team fast enough to end the gunman’s vile rampage. Parents who tried to rush into the school to rescue their kids have also expressed outrage over being handcuffed and restrained outside while police let Ramos continue to evoke terror inside the building.

■ Melbourne urban home-grown reggaedub band Pressure Drop will launch their nine-track album, Crosstown Sessions, on Sunday, Sept .18 from 2pm-6pm.

The launch, at 1812 Theatre at 3 Rose St Upper Ferntree Gully, will also feature special guests on the day. A percentage of proceeds will be donated to the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre. $10 Entry.

50th anniversary

■ An ensemble of Melbourne's finest musicians will reunite to lovingly pay homage to Neil Young's 1972 masterpiece Harvest.

Presented by the Caravan Music Club and Archies Creek Hotel, the venue is the Brunswick Ballroom at 3pm on Sun., Aug 21. Vocalist Lisa Miller will join the band for several songs as they play the celebrated album in its entirety followed by a set of Neil Young favourites. Tickets moshtix.com.au

Canyon dust

■ Renowned for their unique blend of American Alt Country, Folk and Laurel Canyon – West Coast harmony, Canyon has been renamed Canyon Dust in a rebrand to promote the release of their single, Ohio, a Crosby Stills Nash and Young cover.

The track is available now on Bandcamp as is their debut self titled album, Canyon Dust, ahead of a new album release later this year. Canyon Dust will play the St Kilda Sports Club on Friday, July 22, supported by local blues legends Ash Gaudion and Simon Phillips.

■ Award-winning Australian playwright Suzie Miller's new play Anna K will be presented from August 12 to September 4 at the Merlyn Theatre, The Malthouse.

Anna Kay - a top rating television journalist, mother and wife - is now a news subject herself.

After taking a lifetime to build a successful career with integrity, a single decision incurs the wrath of the media and puts her life at the mercy of a savage public.

She soon discovers that no amount of credibility makes you impervious to the institutions that maintain the status quo. Truth at all costs, but best stay in your lane.

Playwright Suzie Miller says: "Anna K is an interrogation of how women in public roles are attacked by hostile voices intent on silencing them.

“Women in high-profile positions are at greater risk of sustaining negative criticism than men in the same positions and also endure violently sexualised online comments and messages intended to intimidate and shame.

“The gendered nature of these acts not only as a force to destroy women at the top of their game, but also act as a threatening warning to other women seeking to occupy similarly high-profile roles in the media, politics and other spaces.

Winter racing at Cobram

■ Cobram on the Murray commenced a week of winter racing on Monday July 11 as many border hoppers descended on the spacious circuit.

■ Narrandera trainer David Kennedy and stable reinsman Jackson Painting brought up two wins in succession after scoring at Wagga in June with a smart gelding by the name of Blazing Home, a son of Rock N Roll Heaven and Capture My Heart who landed the Xerri Evans Accounts, Advisers and Auditors 2Y0 Pace over 1670 metres.

Starting solo on the second line, Blazing Home was immediately off and running as the start was effected to assume control racing for the bell.

Always in control, Blazing Home registered a 7 metre margin over Chirripo (gate two) which began fast to lead before handing over. Joyful (behind leader – one/one at bell) was third 1.9 metres away. The mile rate 1-57.6.

■ The Rock trainer/driver Shane Hallcroft landed the Petstock Cobram Pace over 2170 metres with 6Y0 Lombo Pocket Watch-Sam Rae gelding The Clock Winder in a 2-01.5 mile rate.

Racing parked from gate two, The Clock Winder put pay to the leader Murano prior to the home turn, and scored by 19.4 metres in advance of Louie Finn from the same area which followed him all the way.

Leeton hope Charlie Studleigh (one/four – five wide home turn) was third a half head away.

■ Congupna owner/trainer/driver Eddie Tappe chalked up victory number five from 20 outings with 4Y0 Majestic Son-Aldebaran Peggy mare Abbie in the 2170 metre North Vic Livestock Trotters Mobile returning a mile rate of 2-03.

Restrained from gate five to settle five back along the markers, Abbie moved to one/one midrace as Savvy Kyvalley was eased away from three markers by Anthony Butt to race exposed.

When Savvy Kyvalley dropped to trail the leader Starlight Red in the final circuit, Abbie was left in the open, but it made no difference to the result as she raced clear in the straight to greet the judge by 4.1 metres from Savvy Kyvalley.

Aristotle after an early break from the pole ran on late from well back for third 7.1 metres away.

■ Bunbartha trainer/driver John Newberry’s lightly raced 5Y0 Mr Feelgood-Shez Madam Jasper gelding Cabo Cruz was outstanding in winning the Cobram Hotel Pace over 1670 metres when making his third race appearance.

Bred and raced by John and wife Maree, Cabo Cruz starting from gate three on the second line settled a long way off the leader Occiano which surged forward from the extreme draw to lead.

Going forward three wide solo in the last lap, Cabo Cruz produced a brilliant finishing burst on turning to blouse the leader by a head in 157.6. Denstown (three back the markers) was third 2.7 metres back.

■ Gilty By The Beach was also strong in his victory after going forward three wide solo in the final circuit from near last. Racing past the leader Renko on turning, Gilty By The Beach had 2.4 metres to spare on the wire from Leer which trailed the weakening pacemaker.

Myzarmi finished hard down the centre of the track from the tail for third 4.8 metres away.

It could have been a huge night for Kari as stablemate Whizzbang Dan was beaten by 3 metres into second place in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Mobile after following the poleline leader Sonnyboy – the winner being neighbour Brent Lilley’s 4Y0 Love You-La Tonneralla gelding Maestro in 2-00.5. Driven by Brent Murphy, Maestro was restrained from gate five to settle at the rear.

■ Kyabram trainer Mick Blackmore combined with James Herbertson to land the Haras Des Trotteurs 3Y0 Trotters Mobile over 2150 metres with Bitta Irish Luck, a daughter of Father Patrick and Senita in a 2-00.3 mile rate.

Enjoying a beaut trip from gate four trailing the running poleline leader Love You Girl, Bitta Irish Luck wasn’t pushed to chase in the last lap, gradually making ground to move outside her on the home turn. Going forward in the last lap, Madeakillin joined Jazspur with the pair looking to fight out the finish as Cork angled away from the inside to join in.

Gaining the upper hand on turning, Madeakillin registered a 4.6 metre margin from Cork, with Elegant Jet (6 markers) running on late for third 10.6 metres away. Jazspur got very tired over the concluding stages to finish fourth.

■ Smythes Creek owner/trainer/driver Nathan Cahir’s very handy Somebeachsomewhere-Our Narissa Franco 4Y0 gelding Telemachus was an easy all the way winner of the 1660 metre Come Join Our Committee Pace returning a mile rate of 1-57.2.

Beginning fast to lead from gate two, Telemachus after an easy time reached the judge 3.5 metres clear of Spacewriter which raced outside him, with Cutty Sark (three wide last lap from the rear third 2.2 metres away.

Tragic sadness

■ Following the tragic circumstances of last week, nobody would begrudge the Mifsud family winning the C & M Build Group Pace over 1690 metres at last Thursday’s Kilmore night fixture when 4Y0 SomebeachsomewhereMollys Lucky Star rig Shallow Beach scored in a mile rate of 1-58.2.

Trained by Julie and driven by husband Aussie, Shallow Beach was sent forward three wide from gate three to cross polemarker and stablemate Mister Finnigan and after being rated well, registered a 3.7 metre margin over Neander Guy (one/one), with Favouritehighlight third 2.5 metres away after racing in the open.

With competent concessional reinsman Jordan Leedham in the sulky, Heaven Attracts (gate three) ran home best off a one/one trail to defeat Keayang Kamikaze (one/four – three wide last lap) from the extreme draw which led on the final bend.Two Sock Creek (three back the markers) received a late split on turning to finish third a nose away. The winning margin being a head in a mile rate of 2-00.2.

■ Romsey trainer/driver Chris Svanosio’s Aldebaran Eagle-Aldebaran Maori filly Aldebaran Demi was ultra impressive in taking the Worlds Best Hoof Oil 3Y0 Maiden Trotters Mobile over 2180 metres.

Given a quiet time three pegs from gate five as raging hot favourite Toro Stride led from the pole, Aldebaran Demi sprouted wings along the sprint lane to blouse the favourite by a half head in a rate of 2-04.3. Acool Investment after following the leader was third 3 metres away.

■ Tasmanian Ben Yole has 7Y0 Mach ThreeLove The Red gelding Machavelli racing in outstanding form and notched up another victory by taking the 1690 metre $10,000 Momentum Gaming Pace Final in 1-57.6.

Driven to perfection as expected by James Herbertson, Machavelli stabled at Robbie Walters’ Kilmore stables led throughout from gate four to easily account for Hidden Figure which trailed from the pole, with Coveffe Hustler a stablemate of the winner third after switching from the one/one to the inside on the home turn. The margins 3.9 by 5.8 metres.

■ Croydon South part-owner/trainer John McGillivray’s 10Y0 Stoneridge RegalLotasilkari gelding Lotakevi repeated his victory on the track a week earlier in identical fashion with Ian McMahon again in the sulky when successful in the Buds & Branches Florist Pace over 1690 metres.

Trailing the pacemaker Good Feelings (gate two) from the pole, Lotakevi used the sprint lane to blouse the leader by a nose in a tricky finish.

Denstown (one/one – three wide home turn) was third 2.9 metres back. The mile rate 1-58.7.

Two wins at G’long

■ At Geelong on Friday, Diggers Rest partowner/trainer Lorry Formosa snared the Devcon Properties Pace over 2100 metres with 4Y0 Artistic Fella-Sibling Rivalry mare See You There and in doing so brought up two wins in succession after winning at Cranbourne back in June.

With Richie Caruana in the sulky, See You There outstayed his rivals after racing parked from gate three outside polemarker Zoes Rainbow. Gaining a narrow margin on turning, See You There extended the margin to 3.8 metres in defeating Heavenly Brigade from mid-field and Madame West (one/one) who was a neck back third. The rate 2-00.5.

Late entries for the Golden Rose

■ Following up on the Golden Rose to be run at Rosehill on September 24, a couple of late entries have come to hand.

Nominations hadn’t closed at rime of going to press, but several horses listed who may go around having been well supported.

The first of these is the Sydney colt, Brosnan, a lovely grey horse, who won well at Flemington on May 21.

Prepared by leading Sydney trainer, Gerald Ryan and his co-trainer, S. Alexiou.

Victoria’s leading rider, Jye Mc Neil, booted home three-year-old grey winning in good style.

Prior to that Brosnan pulled up lame, finishing seventh to top galloper Fireburn, the favorite.

That was back on April 22 in the Group One Inglis Sires over 1400 metres.

The win at Flemington was his first from his four starts, he is by leading sire, Snitzel, from the good mare Supara.

There has also been money for another Sydney colt, Promitto, who at only his second start beat a good field of youngsters at Randwick in the Skyline Stakes over 1200 metres.

Ridden by Christen Reith, he was just too strong following up his first start win at Newcastle on a soft track back on February 12.

Promitto is by the Caulfield Guineas winner, Divine Prophet out of Longairo, and is prepared by top young trainer David Atkins.

Back to the favourite, Fireburn, there has been money for the Golden Slipper winner, on top of her brilliant win in March.

Leading Warwick Farm trainer, Gary Portelli, puts the polish on the Rebel Dane filly, and after her Slipper win, it made it four from four.

A young Queensland trainer, Kacey Fogden, has the talented filly, Best of Bordeaux, who ran second to Fireburn in the Slipper, there has been some support for filly too.

Bookies are keeping the next one safe in, Paris Dior, in the care of leading Australian trainer, Gai Waterhouse, and her training partner, Andrew Bott.

By leading sire, Pierro, Paris Dior won the Percy Sykes at Randwick back on April 9, taking her record to two wins from her four starts and two seconds. What she shows is that she could right in this.

One that will give plenty is she gets nominated is the James Cummings trained She’s Extreme, by the boom Victorian sire, Extreme Choice.

She’s Extreme is a winner of the classic, the Champagne Stakes in Sydney and is smart and in a top camp.

He was very stiff not to have ridden a treble, when he only got beaten a head on Niccolite for Graeme Begg.

If you saw him being interviewed on Racing.Com, you could see mud particles on his jacket that had had been kicked up from the soft conditions at Caulfield on to his colours.

Harry also rides a lot for leading trainers, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, and boots home many winners for the combination.

CF is an inherited disorder that causes damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body.

This is what he battles every time he gets a galloper weighing somewhere between 500 and 600 kilos in a race.

You can imagine one minute he could be riding over the sprint distances like 1000 or1200 metres, then he could b riding in the Melbourne Cup over 3200 metres twice around Flemington.

That is plenty of pressure on a young rider with CF. On top of all this he rides all over the country especially for his father, Austy Coffey, who is a leading country trainer.

■ On a wet day at Caulfield, young rider, Harry Coffey, booted home a double and was only beaten a head on another.

It is not that often that Harry rides in Melbourne, but very busy around the bush on other days.

The thing that stands out about him is the young man is battling Cystic Fibrosis, and has done from an early age.

■ I don’t know how many times I have spoken those words or heard them.

The latest that I heard them was when my good young friend, top racecaller Matt Hill on a Wednesday recently, when his horse ‘Hello Broadcast” saluted at Sandown after a few tries.

Matty races the horse with top trainer Enver Jusufovic who said the horse hadn’t done much at his last few starts, but they were hoping, and knowing Matty praying.

Another couple of race callers are in with him, plus a list of well-known people in the media.

A well-known caller of the harness races, Dan Milecki, another good friend over many a year, called Melbourne Cups on Channel 10 in his early days of calling.

Then there is Sydney’s top caller, Darren Flindell, one of the best in the business.

Matty said after race he and the others in the horse were happy to see him win, they didn’t back him, because of form.

They missed out badly, Hey Broadcast, paid nearly $24.00 for the win and $6.40 the place.

The words “Hello Broadcast” come around when the caller answers his phone in the box.

He also left me out, don’t worry I will get even.

Ukrainian Ballet

■ The United Ukrainian Ballet arrives in Australia this October to perform Swan Lake in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.

The Melbourne season is October 20 - 23 at The Plenary, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The United Ukrainian Ballet brings together award-winning dancers from Ukraine’s finest ballet houses including The National Opera of Ukraine, Kharkiv Opera Theatre and Odessa Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Each member of the Company has their own story of how they escaped the devastating war in their homeland to reach safety and join the company.

The United Ukrainian Ballet formed after Ukrainian dancers fled their homeland and is based in The Hague, Netherlands, at the former Royal Conservatoire building which was given to the company to live and work in through the generous support of local business and the Netherlands government.

To support Ukrainian artists and aid in the future rebuilding of Ukraine’s cultural heritage, a portion of each ticket sold on the Australian tour will be donated to The United Ukrainian Ballet Foundation.

PLOS The Musical

■ PLOS Musical Productions presents Chicago the Musical from July 29 to August 6 at the Frankston Arts Centre.

Directed and choreographed by Tamara Finch with musical direction by Tyson Legg, Chicago the Musical is a satirical look at fame, justice, and the media machine. Set in the jazz age in 1920s Chicago, the show is based on real-life murders and trials.

Chicago follows Roxie Hart, a wannabe vaudevillian star who murders her lover and is arrested, despite attempts to convince her husband, Amos, to lie for her.

In the Cook County Jail, Roxie meets her hero, the famed double-murderess and nightclub performer Velma Kelly. When both acquire the same lawyer, the greedy and lustful superstar, Billy Flynn, tensions come to a head as they vie for the spotlight.

Music is by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and the show is based on the book by Ebb and Bob Fosse.
