■ Community engagement finishes on May 15 for Cardinia residents to help create plans and seek funding for a proposed redevelopment of Cardinia Life.

Cardinia Life is the premier aquatic and leisure facility, but has now has reached its capacity and the Council is proposing to redevelop it, so its facilities, programs and services meet the needs of the current and future community.

There is still time to register to attend a workshop to hear about the engagement findings and to help council identify priorities and actions for the redevelopment.

■ Traffic lights will be installed and roads realigned at the South Gippsland Highway/Clyde Five Ways Road intersection in Devon Meadows.

Last week’s Victorian Budget includes $15.4 million for upgrades to reduce the risk of crashes at the busy intersection and cater for future growth in the area.

The project will improve safety and accessibility by realigning Fisheries Rd and removing unsignalised intersections and replacing them with a single intersection with traffic lights.

The South Gippsland Highway/ Clyde Five Ways project will improve safety at the intersection, particularly by addressing an existing uncontrolled right turn, which accounts for almost 50 per centof all crashes recorded at the intersection.

Over a five-year period 22 crashes were recorded at the intersection including one fatality.

Design and planning work on the South Gippsland Highway/Clyde Five Ways intersection project is expected to commence later this year with construction expected to take several years.

■ There was no State Budget allocation to construct the muchneeded duplicated metro rail extension from Cranbourne to Clyde, including new stations at Cranbourne, Cranbourne East, Casey Fields and Clyde.

Casey Council says Clyde and Clyde North, are set to be home to more than 157,000 residents by 2041, rivalling regional centre Bendigo in just two suburbs.

City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff said rapid population growth and record levels of car ownership were putting increased pressure on roads.

IDAHOBIT Festival

Time for leadership

■ Applications are now open for the 2022 Cardinia Community Leadership Program.

The free program provides up to 22 participants with an opportunity to grow their leadership skills and networks, and learn from a host of guest speakers, local leaders, and program alumni.

“This program covers topics to help participants in building their capacity as leaders within their local neighbourhoods, groups or organisations,” said Cardinia Shire Mayor Cr Jeff Springfield.

“I encourage all aspiring and emerging leaders within Cardinia Shire to apply for this incredible learning opportunity.”

The course runs from July to November and is designed to prepare participants for success in their

community leadership roles This includes learning how to effectively contribute to decision-making processes, think creatively and logically about addressing community challenges, and how to strengthen relationships through valuing and respecting diversity and inclusion.

Places in the 2022 program are limited to 22 participants and to be eligible, applicants must be: ■ a Cardinia Shire Council resident ■ 18 years or over ■ already involved in the local community in some way ■ able to attend all program sessions.

Local People Nat’s track upgrade

■ A major upgrade of Nat’s Track has been formally launched in honour of late Frankston student, Natalie Russell.

Natalie’s parents, Brian and Carmel, family members and recent State Upper House MP, David Limbrick, who was Natalie’s partner at the time of her passing, joined Frankston City Council Mayor Nathan Conroy for the launch.

North West Ward Councillors Kris Bolam and Sue Baker, Council CEO Phil Cantillon, Council Director Communities Angela Hughes and senior Council officers also attended along with representatives from Peninsula Kingswood Golf Club, The National Golf Club and students and staff from John Paul College and Monterey Secondary College, as well as local primary schools.

Some 17 doves were released at the launch in honour of Natalie.

Brian Russell said: “We are humbled and proud Natalie will be remembered in this way.

It’s something the people of Frankston will use – not only the school children, but all people.”

Mr Limbrick said: “The revitalisation of Nat’s Track means Natalie will never be forgotten and is a great milestone for healing our community.”

Mr Limbrick said the tragic events not only profoundly affected dozens of people who knew the victims, but also many people who did not know them.

“Ever since this time, the people of this area have proven that they are overwhelmingly good people who look after each other.

We are a big-hearted community – I love south-east Melbourne and the people who live here,” he said.

Natalie Russell was murdered in 1993 on her way home from school and Nat’s Track was subsequently named in her honour in 1999.

Frankston Council has invested approximately $300,000 to improve safety and amenity along the popular student thoroughfare, which joins Skye Rd in Karingal (near John Paul College) to Monterey Secondary College in Frankston North. The track is bordered by Peninsula Kingswood Golf Club and the National Golf Club.

The State Government also contributed $65,500 towards the project for works including fencing, plumbing and CCTV. Mayor Cr Nathan Conroy said: “Council is proud to have invested in upgrades and a wide range of works including resurfacing and realignment of the track, new fencing, CCTV and dog waste bins located at both ends of the track.

“It’s been wonderful to see our local schools involved in this project and I commend students from John Paul College and Monterey Secondary College for their great work painting and installing the planter boxes along Nat’s Track.

“Other works include park benches located at both ends of the track, landscaping, decorative art pieces along the fence line and the beautiful sculpture, launched earlier this year, at the Skye Rd end of the track.

“All of these improvements could not have occurred without the patience, support and care provided by both Brian and Carmel Russell for which we are deeply grateful,” he said.

Cr Conroy thanked all those involved in the Nat’s Track upgrade, adding: “The launch is a great illustration of what can be achieved when we all work together.”

He particularly acknowledged the support of the State Member for Frankston, Paul Edbrooke, and longstanding advocacy of Cr Kris Bolam.

Mr Edbrooke said: “The upgrades to Nat’s Track complement the State Government’s $32 million investment into the Frankston North Education Project, which is improving the educational facilities and outcomes in our community.

“The safety of our community is our number one priority and it is great to work with Council and show how different levels of government working together can achieve great things in our community,” he said.

John Paul College Principal John Visentin said: “John Paul College welcomes the necessary upgrading of this important thoroughfare for students and others.”

Guns, drugs seized

● Namatjira Morgan Police are appealing for public assistance to help locate Namatjira Morgan. The 43-year-old is wanted on warrants in relation to assault, criminal damage, drug and driving offences. He is known to frequent the Sandringham, Hampton East and Shepparton areas. He is described being of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander appearance, approximately 174cm tall, with a shaved head, medium build, and tattoos.

Fast action by Police after illegal activity at Lyndhurst has won praise from local residents.

Detective Senior Constable Jarryd Gray said: “Our local licensed premises and surrounding areas should be a safe place for all patrons and members of our community. There are increased penalties for the possession of weapons around licensed premises and there is no excuse for bringing them to these locations. If you think you can come to these areas and engage in criminal conduct, think again. We will find you and will not hesitate to being you before the courts.”

The City of Casey has welcomed the Victorian Government’s commitment to invest in important local projects and services as part of the 2022-23 State Budget. Local residents will benefit from the funding boost to expand the Casey Hospital Emergency Department, upgrades to several local schools and safety improvements along the South Gippsland Highway among other budget measures. City of Casey Chair of Administrators Noelene Duff said the Council looked forward to seeing these initiatives be implemented and deliver real value to the community.

“It is pleasing to see that at a time when it is needed most, Casey Hospital will share in a $236 million funding boost that will enable this critical service to increase its capacity to better support our community, improve patient care and support local jobs,” said Ms Duff.

■ Detectives from the Frankston Crime Investigation Unit have arrested 26 people and seized guns, drugs, and weapons as part of Operation Washed.

The investigation commenced in February after local Police identified an increase in criminal activity around short-stay accommodation and licensed premises in Frankston, Seaford and Carrum Downs.

To date, 26 people have been arrested as part of the operation for various offences including drug trafficking, drug possession, weapon possession, firearms offences, possession of proceeds of crime, contravening court orders, assaults, driving offences, and bail act offences.

Notable arrests include: ■ A 35-year-old Botanic Ridge man located near a licensed premises in Seaford allegedly in possession of imitation firearms, knives, nunchuks and drugs of dependence on March 1.

He was charged with four counts of possess imitation firearm, two counts of possess prohibited weapon, possess dangerous article, possess controlled weapon, possession of cannabis, three counts of assault police and reckless conduct endangering serious injury.

He was bailed to appear at the Frankston

Magistrates’ Court on July 15.

■ A 30-year-old woman and a 55-year-old man, both from Bayswater North, following a vehicle search near a licensed premises in Seaford on March 11.

The search allegedly located a firearm, drugs, weapons and proceeds of crime.

The woman was charged with five counts of possession of a drug of dependance, three counts of negligently deal with proceeds of crime and possess dangerous article in public place.

She was bailed to appear at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on July 29.

He was bailed to appear at the Frankston Magistrates’ Court on July 12.

■ A 34-year-old Carrum Downs man who was arrested following a search warrant at a shortstay accommodation room in Seaford on April 27.

Climate policy for Peninsula ■ Mornington Peninsula Shire is introducing a new local Environmentally Sustainable Development Policy as part of its ‘Climate Emergency’ response.

Consultation on the proposed Planning Scheme Amendment C232morn will close on May 20.

A Council representative said the policy aims to ensure new development on the Mornington Peninsula achieves best practice in environmental sustainability, from the design stage through to construction and operation.

The policy will apply to new developments of a certain size needing a planning permit, such as: ■ Residential development of two or more houses on one lot.

■ Commercial and industrial developments with a floor area of 100 square metres or more.

Mayor CrAnthony Marsh said: “Like Council’s Environmentally Sustainable Design Policy for Shire-owned buildings and civil works, the local ESD Policy will help ensure new buildings on private land are more energy-efficient and climate-resilient while minimising our impact on the environment.

“A more considered approach to building design, construction, and operation will reduce waste, conserve water, and lower household energy bills while improving overall comfort and liveability for building occupants,” Cr Marsh said.

Drug raids: $410,000 grabbed ■ The Mornington Divisional Response Unit of Victoria Police have arrested and charged four men and two women with drug trafficking and seized approximately $410,000 in cash following a series of sweeping, early morning raids in Melbourne’s south-east.

The year-long investigation has resulted in Police dismantling a significant drug syndicate allegedly selling illicit substances throughout Melbourne’s south-east suburbs and through to regional Victoria.

Five simultaneous search warrants were executed this morning in Frankston, Carrum Downs, Seaford and Brighton East.

Warrants were conducted by detectives from the Mornington DRU with the support of the Crime Investigation Unit, Frontline Tactical Unit and the Australian Federal Police.

Items seized include: ■ A traffickable quantity of what is alleged to be cocaine ■ Approximately $410,000 in cash ■ An imitation firearm ■ A grey 2014 Holden Commodore A 40-year-old Carrum Downs woman, 44year-old Carrum Downs man, 37-year-old Brighton East man, 39-year-old Seaford man,

39-year-old Carrum Downs woman, and a 42year-old Carrum Downs man were all arrested and charged with trafficking a large commercial quantity of methylamphetamine and cocaine.

All six are expected to be remanded and appear before court at a later date.

Superintendent Fiona Bock said: “The Mornington DRU has worked tirelessly over the past 12 months and as a result, have significantly disrupted a drug syndicate operating throughout Melbourne’s south east.”

“With six people now facing the prospect of 20 years behind bars, our message is clear – if you seek to cause harm to our community and flood our streets with drugs, you will be caught and you will face harsh consequences for your actions.”

Local Briefs Extortion probe

■ Financial Crime Squad detectives have charged two men following an investigation into an alleged series of extortion and criminal damage by fire incidents linked to a debt collection business.

Detectives executed search warrants at nine addresses on Thursday and Friday (May 5-6), in Brighton, South Yarra, Melbourne, Colac, Boonah, Avondale Heights, Windsor and Cheltenham (2).

They subsequently seized four vehicles (one Audi A7, two Mercedes Benz, and one Toyota Landcruiser), six firearms, a significant quantity of cash, quantity of drugs, false identification and police equipment.

A 64-year-old South Yarra man was charged with multiple firearm offences, possess proceeds of crime, possess controlled weapon and possess drug of dependence.

He was bailed to front Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on November 22.

A 46-year-old Brighton man was charged with obtain property by deception, theft of motor vehicle, stalking and installing a software device.

He was bailed to appear at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (May 10).

The investigation remains ongoing.

Lyndhurst nabbed

■ Police have arrested two men after an aggravated burglary and a theft from motor vehicle on Thursday morning (May 5) in Lyndhurst.

Officers responded to a report of an attempted aggravated burglary in which a man tried to enter the front door of a home on Kess Grove about 2.35am. It is believed he then stole a torch from a parked car in the driveway before fleeing.

Some 20 minutes later, police attended a Whisper St home for an attempted burglary after a man was disturbed by a resident while trying to steal a bicycle from a garage attached to the house. The man fled on foot leaving a shoe behind.

Uniform police and a canine unit were quickly on scene and after searching the immediate area, located two men nearby, one minus a shoe.

After a short foot chase, Police caught and arrested the pair near the intersection of Endeavour and Steele Sts. Two 18-year-old men from Cranbourne North are currently in custody assisting police with their enquiries.

Fire: 3 arrested

■ Moorabbin Crime Investigation Unit have arrested three men following a house fire in Clayton South.

Police executed warrants at three properties on Thursday morning (May 5) in Ormond, St Kilda and Caulfield.

It is understood three men attended a property on Clayton Rd about 9.40pm on Monday, April 4.

It is alleged one of the men used a baseball bat to smash the windows of the apartment before setting the living room on fire.

The fire completely gutted an apartment which was unoccupied at the time.

The three men then allegedly fled the scene in a silver Kia Stonic.

A 36-year-old Ormond man was charged and remanded to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.

A 51-year-old St Kilda man and a 40-yearold Ormond man have been released pending summons.

Despi question

■ Independent Flinders candidate Despi O’Connor’s attempt to take the seat from retiring Liberal MHR Greg Hunt has been suspended.

The former Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor has suspended her campaign over eligibility concerns.

In a statement, Ms O’Connor said she had become aware of an eligibility problem under the Australian Constitution, which states that “any person who holds any office of profit under the Crown … shall be incapable of being chosen or of sitting as a member of the House of Representatives”.

Where is Jackson?

■ Police are releasing a new image as part of their continued appeal for public assistance to help locate missing Mount Martha man Jackson.

The 25-year-old was last seen at his work on Lower Dandenong Rd in Braeside about 12.30pm on Tuesday, April 12.

Jackson has been missing for four weeks now which is very out of character and both Police and family have significant concerns for his welfare.

Investigators have conducted extensive enquiries in the weeks since Jackson disappeared, including searches in Mount Martha and surrounding areas.

Jackson is Caucasian, 175cm tall with a thin build, light brown hair, unshaven and an angel tattoo on his right forearm and a nose piercing.

He was last seen wearing black Adidas shorts, a black hooded Nike jumper, and black Vans shoes.

He also had a grey backpack and was wearing a black peak cap.

Police have released the last known image of Jackson, captured at a store in Mornington on the day of his disappearance.

It is hoped someone may recognise him and provide information on his whereabouts.

Investigators are appealing for anyone who has seen Jackson since his disappearance three weeks ago to contact the Mornington Police Station on 5970 4900.

■ Frankston historical jewel – Ballam Park Homestead – has reopened.

Frankston Historical Society President Glenda Viner said volunteers are excitedly looking forward to seeing visitors back at the Homestead.

“The Homestead provides an important connection to Frankston’s rich history. It is the oldest house in Frankston and was built for one of Victoria's early pioneering families, the Liardets, in 1855,” Ms Viner said.

“The homestead has remained practically unchanged in appearance since it was first constructed using bricks made on site. It has long been a favourite with residents and visitors thanks to its historic charm and museum, cafe and resource centre,” she said.

“Our historical jewel is back to its best thanks to support from Frankston City Council,” Ms Viner said.

“Council funded approximately $250,000 maintenance works, which were initiated following a significant electrical fault.

Local News More bus services

■ The State Government is improving bus services in Cranbourne West and Narre Warren to provide locals with better transport connections to employment, education, shops and train stations.

The package of works is part of the Victorian Budget 2022-23 to improve bus services across the state.

Extra bus services will be rolled out in Cranbourne West. These services will also connect the Cranbourne West community with activity hubs such as Merinda Park train station, schools, shopping centres, and medical centres.

Students of the newly established Cranbourne West Secondary who live in Cranbourne West, Hampton Park and Lynbrook areas will also have improved bus services.

Changes to the bus network will also be made to provide connections to the Casey Business Park near Fountain Gate in Narre Warren, improving public transport access for workers and customers.

Planning for these changes is underway and the timing of the service changes will be provided to the community when this process is completed.

The Government is allocating more than $5 million in the Budget to upgrade 80 bus stops across Victoria, to improve access and comfort for public transport passengers.

Cranbourne MLA Pauline Richards said: “The extension of bus services into Cranbourne West and the Casey Business Park will ensure our transport network can better meet demand – improving accessibility and performance.”

■ MLC Harriet Shing has announced that land will be acquired for Pakenham Northwest Primary School (interim name) which will be one of 15 sites to be acquired for future new schools, backed by an investment of $236.7 million in the Victorian Budget 2022-23. ● T

Little for Frankston

■ The Victorian Budget was a great disappointment for proponents of the long-proposed Frankston rail extension.

Frankston was mentioned once in the Budget, announced on last week by State Treasurer Tim Pallas.

The State Government doled out $9.7 million for suburban streetscape improvements, - and Frankston shares this amount with seven other suburbs – Boronia, Broad-meadows, Lilydale, Melton, Noble Park, Reservoir and Tarneit.

“It is a miserable amount, a token that will not satisfy anyone from those areas,” said Committee for Greater Frankston CEO Ginevra Hosking.

“In fact, it’s downright insulting. Putting it in the Budget simply draws attention to how this government is starving outer suburbs of vital infrastructure funding.”

“Why is this government failing outer suburbs like Frankston so badly?”

Ms Hosking said Frankston received two items for health and education – $29 million to “commandeer Frankston Private Hospital to assist the state catch up on public elective surgery not done during the pandemic” and Naranga School in Karingal receives $7.6 million as part of an upgrade bundle of $326 million for 36 specialist schools that cater to children with a disability.

Ms Hosking said the Federal Government’s $225 million for the Frankston rail extension remained on the table, “but the Victorian Government continues to ignore the project”.

“This Budget has not added one cent towards fixing our region’s inadequate public transport network.

“The Budget was a perfect opportunity for the Andrews Government to fund its half share of the minimum first stage requirement – a 5km single-track extension to Langwarrin with a new station at Monash University, and a 2000-space park and ride plus bus terminus for Mornington Peninsula commuters. Just $225 million was all we needed.”

■ Echo Taskforce detectives arrested a man alleged to be a patched Comanchero member wanted as part of an ACT Police investigation.

Echo investigators were contacted by ACT Police requesting assistance in arresting the man and supporting his extradition process for his return to the ACT. With the assistance of Australian Federal Police, Echo detectives attended Melbourne Airport and arrested a 30-year-old Coombs man.

His arrest follows the execution of a warrant by ACT Police at his home address on April 30 as part of an investigation into drug trafficking and firearm related offending. He was to face ACT Magistrates’ Court, charged with trafficking a controlled drug

Local Theatre Real Inspector Hound

■ Artefact Theatre Company have hit the stage running with their first for 2022 production of The Real Inspector Hound at St Martins Theatre.

Tom Stoppard’s ingenious farce doesn’t tire and this production was nonstop as one would expect from Director Matthew Cox with a string of successes to his name.

In true Agatha Christie style, in country Muldoon Manner it’s a whodunnit with a chaotic and funny conclusion. Stoppard treats us to a play within a play.

Two theatre critics Moon (Annabelle Tudor) and Birdboot (James Cutler) are reviewing Piccadilly Players' production of The Real Inspector Hound at the Palava Theatre, Soho, London. All in April 1973.

Cleverly seated in the front row of the real St Martins Theatre audience, they set about recording their review midst eating chocolates, writing notes, using a recorder and conversing with those seated next to them.

The Piccadilly Players' six cast all played their roles with precision and indeed exactness, with Drudge the dutiful housekeeper (Bridie Pamment) and a very animated Simon Gascoyne (Ben Andrews) leading the way.

However, at times the scenes were stolen

by Lady Cynthia Muldoon (Julia Grace) who gave a tantalising and dazzling performance bordering on voluptuousness.

Add a fiery tennis player Felicity Cunningham (Seon Williams) who has aspirations for Gascoyne and is hurt by his rejection, we were still no closer to knowing who is the Real Inspector Hound?

Wheelchair bound grumpy Major Magnus Muldoon (Dylan Watson) together with incompetent Police Inspector Hound (Ross Dwyer) reveal themselves as key players as bodies start to pile up adding to the corpse of a previous critic named Higgs that lay on the floor next to the chaise longue throughout the play.

All was revealed, or was it? Were there not some unanswered questions? A great whodunnit production well underpinned by a host of technical support.

It’s Now or Never

■ The Basin Theatre presented a wonderful stage set of the interior of a villa in Spain for the comedy It's Now Or Never.

As this is a typical farce there were the obligatory six doors which were well used by the players.

Lucas Thomas was Keith Clark, the owner of the villa. Thomas projects well but his voice was rather too loud for the intimate theatre.

Some of his scenes were outrageous and got a good response from the audience.

His mateTom Weals was played by James Ness. Another good projection performance but again the voice was too loud and sometimes seemed to be screaming. His overall performance was quite funny, and he worked well with his fiancée Alice Martin.

Alice Martin was played by Tina Bono, who gave an outstanding performance, really catching the character of Alice, the girl wasn’t enamoured with Elvis. She participated in some great scenes which the audience really enjoyed.

The Spanish dry cleaner, Lydia Sandez was played by Nicole Barravecchio, who kept the standard expected of the role and was enjoyed by the audience.

Alan Ashby was Elvis. An exhausting role the way he was, shall we say, moved about.

As Elvis he had no speaking role but as Rocco Sandez, he did have some lines. A good performance.

The journalist from England was given an hysterical performance by Elise Michelle as Cherry Richards. Some of her scenes were a sheer delight and the audience certainly appreciated her performance.

Another superb performance adding to the standard of the evening.

Talk is cheap, gossip is priceless

Jack and Millie

■ Alaine Beek’s cancer journey began with a letter following a routine mammogram.

The letter called Beek in for a check-up.

The odds were in her favour – there was a 90 per cent chance that she did not have cancer.

Unfortunately, Beek was one of the 10 per cent whose biopsy result revealed breast cancer. To get through her ordeal and remain positive after her diagnosis, Beek visualised her cancer as an imaginary friend. She named her cancer Jack.

This coping mechanism spawned from the necessity to grapple with a life-threatening event became the creative spark for Beek’s play, Jack and Millie.

Jack and Millie is an illuminating and honest play about contemplating death.

Despite the bleak theme, this show is not as dark as you expect it to be. Instead, it is funny and quirky in equal measure.

A 50-something professional, Millie’s (Beek) world is knocked sideways with her diagnosis.

Enter Jack (Phil Cameron-Smith); her cancer reimagined in human form.

Jack is that voice of doubt, that naysayer reminding Millie that she is mortal and that life is finite.

Jack is also the voice of gallows humour and a way of making sense of the provocations of Millie’s new reality: the seemingly endless rounds of doctors’ appointments, surgeries, radiotherapy, and other invasions.

During this blackest of times, Millie bumps into an old friend from her university days, Declan (Ross Daniels).

A fledgling romance was not something Millie envisioned.

But in this new normal, Millie learns, one needs to embrace the chaos.

Girl From The North Country

■ A talented cast of singers, musicians and actors graced the Comedy Theatre stage for the opening Girl From The North Country.

A beautiful set, a unique opening with house lights on a dark stage that gradually transitioned.

I was intrigued from the start, including wondering how twenty two Bob Dylan’s songs would be woven into one piece of theatre.

The set was continually changing with screen scenes, different props/furniture, characters coming, going in this musical play set in a boarding house in Duluth, Minnesota.

Whilst I enjoyed the singing and performances from most of the cast I did find the story both confusing and somewhat depressing.

Writer/Director Conor McPherson put together a piece with many troubled people, whether it be money, health issues or other personal problems. The humour was dark and not much of it.

Do not expect a comedy in the theatre of this name, this is many tales of woe in a bigoted, narrow minded USA in the 1930s.

At times it was difficult to hear the dialogue and follow the stories of the various characters.

Other times there was too much happening at one time making it difficult to focus, yet admirably this is a show with energy.

The band under the direction of Andrew Ross, with musical arrangements and orchestrations

by Simon Hale was a highlight. It included drums and other percussion played by the cast, double bass Mark Harris, guitars Cameron Henderson, violin and mandolin Xani Kolac.

Solos were shared around the cast, all talented singers playing their parts well. This was an ensemble cast with many notable performances, Lisa McCune (Elizabeth Laine) and Elijah Williams (Joe Scott) the standouts. It was refreshing to see a show with mostly older characters/actors.

For Dylan fans Girl From The North Country would no doubt be a musical treat. A unique experience which I hope does well for this accomplished ensemble.

■ Listening audiences of Melbourne community radio station 96.5 Inner FM will be familiar with the voice of Rob Morrison, who has been a presenter at the station since 1992.

Rob currently hosts the weekly light-music program Kaleidoscope on Thursdays between 1pm- 3pm, and Musical Theatre Melodies on Tuesday evenings between 9pm- 11.00pm and contributes to the Local Theatre program..

Musical Theatre Melodies celebrated its 11th anniversary last week.

The radio show is devoted to the best of Broadway, London's West End, the Australian stage and a little European operetta.

Each week, Rob pays tribute to the anniversary of the premiere of a featured musical comedy, drama, operetta or comic opera with a broadcast of the score from its original cast, revival cast or studio cast recording, interspersed with Rob's narration of the storyline to establish each song within the context of the show's plot.

Where possible, interviews are included with people associated with each musical such as composers, lyricists, musical directors, performers and musical theatre historians with background knowledge of the shows.

Guests on Musical Theatre Melodies to date have included composers and/or lyricists Leslie Bricusse, Frank Wildhorn, Sheldon Harnick, Peter Pinne, Tom Jones (collaborator with Harvey Schmidt on The Fantasticks and other musicals - not the Welsh pop singer) and overseas performers Constance Towers, Chita Rivera, Daisy Eagan, Cady Huffman, Walter Willison, Lee Roy Reams and Harry Groener.

What’s On Love in Bright Landscapes

■ Love in Bright Landscapes, the moving, inspirational visual biography of Australian singer/songwriter David McComb (19621999) is screening in selected Melbourne cinemas.

Made over thirteen years, Love in Bright Landscapes uses home movies, 35mm slides, videos, personal letters and poems read by Australian-born Man Booker Prize winning novelist DBC Pierre, frank interviews with David's family, friends, fellow musicians, manager and fiancee, and excerpts from seventy-five of McCombe's songs, interspersed with images of David's dearly loved landscapes.

Beautifully crafted to tell of a passionate, unique musician with his own 'peculiar brand of song' who formed the highly successful rock band The Triffids, (from John Wyndham's post-apocalyptic novel The Day of the Triffids) and later performing solo, the movie also adds intimacy by capturing the human aspects of David's life.

Childhood home movies from the farm, beach, holidays and fishing reflect David's happiness in outdoor environments. We hear he was driven, willing to make sacrifices to play music in his own unconventional style, described later as "authentic".

His father, prominent Perth surgeon Dr Harold McComb, doubted David's decision in 1980 to travel to the east with The Triffids - "You're not the Beatles". It is a poignant moment when after attending David's funeral in 1999 and hearing the high public respect for his son as a person and artist, David's father reportedly said he now understood.

This is director Jonathan Alley's first film, and it is a great achievement that by the movie's end, audiences feel emotionally connected with David McComb and his story.

We experience sadness at David's untimely passing just before his 37th birthday, wishing he were here now to continue his charismatic performances.

Love in Bright Landscapes also contains a treasure trove of valuable historical archival footage from the 1960s to 1990s.

During his lifelong struggle for redemption, Valjean is relentlessly pursued by police inspector Javert. During the Paris student uprising in 1832, Javert confronts his ideals after Valjean spares his life and saves the student revolutionary who has captured the heart of Valjean's adopted daughter. Valjean finally attains his long-sought peace.

Wiggles in the Vault ■ Australian children’s music supergroup,The Wiggles, has been welcomed into the Australian Music Vault to commemorate their 2022 Ted Albert Award for Outstanding Service to Australian music.

Some of the band’s most iconic objects are now on display in the exhibition space at Arts Centre Melbourne.

The Wiggles are recognised by the Australian Music Vault in this exhibition of Wiggles memorabilia, "It’s so great to take a trip down memory lane and see some of the amazing items from the past 30 years, says Blue Wiggle Anthony Field.

"I’m not sure what Jeff will do without his purple skivvy as we still have a show to play in Adelaide next weekend, but I’m sure we’ll figure something out."

Objects on display include: Custom Maton Mastersound MS500 guitar signed by past and present members of The Wiggles 2015-2022; Original prop sword used by Paul Paddick as Captain Feathersword for performances with The Wiggles1995-2022; Purple skivvy worn by Jeff Fatt when performing with The Wiggles c.1991-2012; ARIA Hall of Fame awarded to Anthony Field of The Wiggles – 2011, and more.

Formed in Sydney in 1991,The Wiggles have been entertaining generations of children all over the world for more than 30 years. Adorned in coloured skivvies and accompanied by the characters Captain Feathersword, Dorothy the Dinosaur, Henry the Octopus and Wags the Dog, The Wiggles have forged their own cultural landscape fostering a love of music in millions of children.

While undertaking studies in early childhood education, Anthony Field (Blue Wiggle) recruited fellow university students Murray Cook (Red Wiggle) and Greg Page (Yellow Wiggle) alongside Jeff Fatt (Purple Wiggle) to record an album for children.

Today, they are a global brand who have embarked on multiple international tours, sold over 30 million albums and DVDs, released 59 studio albums, won 13 ARIA Awards for Best Children’s Album, and been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

Low

■ The Victorian Theatre Company returns to Theatre Works with Low, a thriller play from Australian playwright Daniel Keene, from May 17 - 21 at the Explosives Factory, 67 Inkerman St, St Kilda.

Directed by Jennifer Sarah Dean (Moulin Rouge!), this Daniel Keene love story is described as "brutal", and "a dark Bonnie and Clyde tale set in the streets of Melbourne".

"It’s a story that comes from and belongs to our streets," explains Dean. "The play is firmly set in 1991 Melbourne - a hard period in Australian history with recession gripping the country.”

Rising stars Matthew Connell (The Darkening Sky, King Lear) and Veronica Thomas (When The Light Leaves, Thigh Gap) are cast as the two star crossed lovers.

Low will be scored by composer and sound designer Thomas Kunz (Hamlet), anchoring the piece to the time period and bringing out the heightened poetry of Keene's work.

Chelsea Neate’s set and costume design will bring Melbourne’s dark alleyways to life in the ideal venue of Theatre Works' new warehouse space The Explosives Factory.

A Hundred Words

■ Theatre Works’ Explosives Factory is the venue for UK playwright Tatty Hennessy’s A Hundred Words for Snow. This 80-minute monologue play is performed by very talented Eddie Pattison as the teenage Rory (Aurora).

As we walk in, the exposed simple set consists of a small tent which sits diagonally opposite an urn. From the outset, the story as told by teenage Rory at her father’s funeral is engaging.

We learn that he was a geography teacher who always wanted to be an explorer and go to the North Pole. Rory decides to take the urn filled with her father’s ashes and take him there.

This mesmerising story won a VAULT Origins Award for outstanding new work in 2018.

The journey embarked upon is varied and fascinating. Rory has such an affinity for what she has learnt from her father, she feels anything is possible.

She is courageous and takes opportunities of meeting new and interesting people along her journey. In the end she realises that ‘Life is fragile’. Like all young travellers the world over, on returning home, she finds nothing has changed, but everything has changed.

Director and Producer Gavin Roach brings out the best in this actor.

Pattison shows great depth of character, a well-modulated voice and is enthralling to watch.

The mood is enhanced with the lighting, designed by Spencer Herd and captivating sounds of moving ice sheets from Sound Designer Connor Ross.

Congratulations to the creative team behind this moving production.

Observations How To Please A Woman

● Sally Phillips as Gina ■ With Mother’s Day just passed, a film with the title of How To Please A Woman seems timely.

Yet those expecting a detailed how-to manual are not going to get it with this film, but they will get a glorious comic romp that looks at serious issues for women in the middle years of their lives.

Gina (the wonderful Sally Phillips) is the victim of a business restructure where she is the only one to lose her job – she also happens to be the oldest woman in the workplace and she feels that is a big part of the reason.

Her female swimming mates decide to cheer her up with a surprise visit from a male stripper.

Initially, this horrifies Gina and she begs him to stop. But upon being told in sexy undertones that he is hers for two hours to do anything with, she voices a deeply felt wish shared by many women – for him to clean her house!

And thus starts an idea for a new business opportunity - housecleaning by hunky blokes who may or may not keep their clothes on.

As the business develops, manager Gina finds herself aware of many people (including herself) who are stuck in flat relationships that have lost their intimacy. So perhaps there is another need that her business can address?

To tell you more would be to spoil the experience. But there are serious relationship issues examined here, and Gina’s solutions are certainly innovative.

There are fine performances throughout, but it is Sally Phillips’s star turn, with a little help from mature beefcake Steve (Erik Thomson).

As a side note, those of a certain age may remember the Cleo centrefolds of the 70s and 80s – Erik Thomson was one of the first.

This is a fun film that might provoke some serious discussion – but do see it with someone broadminded so you can both enjoy it.

While it is certainly aimed at women, it could be an educational experience for the bloke in your life.

What’s On Art of Everyday Melbourne

■ From Mundane to Friday: The Art of Everyday Melbourne, presented until July 22 at the Lower Melbourne Town Hall, captures the mood of the city over the past few years and injects new life into a whimsical collection of found objects, ephemera and life’s detritus.

Melbourne-based ceramic artist Kenny Pittock has worked with the City of Melbourne Collection to create an exhibition that imbues value and cultural meaning into otherwise disposable objects.

From Mundane to Friday features new works from Pittock that shine a light on the city’s pandemic past, alongside existing pieces from the Collection that encapsulate stories from pre and post-colonial settlement.

As part of the exhibition, he has replicated 25 shopping lists gathered during Melbourne’s lockdowns, along with 19 signs found hanging on the front doors of businesses through the city on March 28, 2020.

Pittock’s unusual fascination with abandoned shopping lists harks back to his teenage years.

“I was 15 when I first got a part-time job as a supermarket cleaner and trolley pusher," explains Pittock. " I’ve worked there on and off for more than half of my life. Part of the job is getting rid of any rubbish left behind in the trolleys. It’s usually just receipts and catalogues, but often, more interestingly, it’s abandoned shopping lists. Rather than throw them away, I read them and soon began to collect them. I now have a collection of more than 5000 found shopping lists.”

Melburnians’ recent experience of lockdowns can be seen in some of Pittock’s more recently acquired lists.

“While shopping lists may appear to simply capture mundane everyday life, these past two years have produced a form of everyday life that has been anything but mundane.

“Our world has changed during the pandemic, and this is reflected in our buying patterns. One of the lists featured here reads: "Get pkt rice if you can" and "Butter chicken or something else".

“When panic buying struck, many lists began to include back-up plans for when a first preference wasn’t in stock. The lists also began to reflect a shift towards community spirit; for instance, one list includes "Chocolates for neighbours.”

Likewise, A Sign of the Times, another project of ceramic mimicry, captures the hope, gratitude, concerns and fears of a city in lockdown. The 19 pieces, each hand sculpted from earthenware clay, kiln-fired and hand-painted, are exact replicas of signs hanging on the front doors of businesses through Melbourne city on March 28, 2020. They include signs from restaurants and cafes, gyms, retailers and public venues.

The exhibition also features objects from the City of Melbourne Collection and art from Elizabeth Gower, Lorraine ConnellyNorthey, Ghost NetArt Project, Jesse Marlow, Patrick Pound, Louiseann King and Peter Atkins.

Waradgerie (Wiradjuri) artist Lorraine Connelly-Northey has created a Kooliman (indigenous carrying vessel) from the waste that once littered her Country, while the Ghost Net Art Project has crafted an Eastern Long Neck Turtle using massive fishing nets lost or abandoned at sea that pose a major threat to many marine fauna species and corals.

The contents of a ticket inspector’s jacket pocket, images of a smiling cardboard box, abstract paintings based on obsolete train tickets, melted love-locks, and cut-out junk mail add to the exhibition’s curious diversity.

■ Glamour Pussy and The Hip Replacements is a fun, refreshing, original, contemporary, clever, thought provoking cabaret show starring Glamour Pussy (aka Naomi Eyers ) accompanied by a cello and piano (The Hip replacements).

What a wonderful voice, one I had not heard before or at least had not recognised - Glamour Pussy, a seasoned performer, was fabulous, an all round entertainer.

She held the audience for 70 minutes in an intimate show with songs, banter, images of her younger self.

It was particularly impressive to hear the original, very current lyrics, with chords, rhythm and melody in cabaret style, making the songs feel familiar.

Glamour Pussy had a terrific rapport with her audience, many who wanted to be involved whether it was by playing an instrument, showing off their glitter and glam or wanting a hug.

She walked comfortably amongst the audience chatting, complementing, and insulting as was required.

This is a new show with some teething problems. Some forgetful lines of songs or dialogue, slow costume changes, AV and sound glitches but the excuse of ‘having a senior moment’ endeared us even more to Glamour Pussy , highlighting the show’s theme of ageing in style. It was perfectly imperfect.

Glamour Pussy was expecting an encore and deserved one, however the choice of song I found very odd. After wonderful originals I was left humming a song I do not like nor think fitted the theme or style of the show and was disappointed to be left on this note. I still wonder why, perhaps I missed something.

This show was very relatable to all over 40s in Melbourne 2022. With very current themes, fun with guessing Glamour Pussy’s choir of guests, great use of minimal set and props.

A brilliant Australian show performed with gusto, looking forward to seeing what is next for Naomi Eyers and her crew.

From a musical point of view I could not find fault. I did not hear one ‘clanger’ or anything mistimed; it sounded perfectly in sync with the dialogue and action on the screen above. Don’t expect a huge screen.

With a large orchestra in front, in a 2466 seated venue the screen seems small compared to a cinema, but we were there for the music, the screen size forgotten once the film began.

This show was less formal than my previous orchestra experiences, there was some laughter from the musicians watching the film, whilst others were bopping along to the music.

Some remained focused on their music, listening intently. Very interesting to watch. I have seen Toy Story before a few times but had not noticed how ‘dark’ the themes are.

The orchestra’s intensity brought this out, heightening the theatrics of the movie. I barely noticed the score in the film previously other than the main theme - You’ve Got A Friend In Me, yet hearing it live emphasised how important the music is in conveying the nuances of the story , particularly in regard to the more sinister or dramatic moments.

There was just the right amount of loud, (the subtitles were useful) making the hybrid of live v film feel alive, more intense, more sinister.

Hearing/seeing an orchestra in this way is a great introduction or reintroduction for all ages to orchestral music.

If you think you are not a fan of this style of music, or want to see a film in all its sound glory, this big band at Arts Centre Melbourne is the way to go.

A very unique experience for me that I look forward to attending again.

Mishka’s residency aims to demystify autistic art practices. From March to May 2023, 16 autistic and non-autistic artists will examine stim vocabularies to develop a sensory and tactile performance with large-scale brain puppets, as well as a film installation with projection mapping.

The Warehouse Residency was co-devised by Arts House and six Deaf, Disabled and neurodiverse artists, with support from Arts Access Victoria, to ensure the program embraces self-determination, flexibility and risk taking, and enhances inclusion and participation The Warehouse Residency program supports the City of Melbourne’s vision to make Melbourne the world’s most accessible and inclusive city where all people can participate with dignity and independence.

It extends a long history of Arts House programming and partnerships involving deaf and disabled artists, including Back to Back Theatre, Rawcus, Jodee Mundy Collaborations, Claire Cunningham and Chelle Destefano.

The next expression of interest for The Warehouse Residency at Arts House will open in October 2022.

Lord Mayor Cr Sally Capp said: “The Warehouse Residency program is a leading example that champions accessibility within the creative sector in an artist-led model.

“By embracing equity in participation and furthering inclusivity, we’re giving a diverse range of artists the opportunity to thrive. We can’t wait to experience and celebrate their important work.”

Rourke’s Reviews Tokyo Vice

■ (MA). 8 episodes. Now streaming on Apple TV+.

Based on the true-life experiences of American journalist Jake Adelstein (although some aspects told in his book have been questioned), this well-crafted, largely well cast drama/thriller has all the ingredients for outstanding TV, but some frustrating structural choices, plus one woeful case of miscasting, results instead in an entertaining, fitfully compelling series that never reaches the heights it could have.

After a confrontational opening sequence set in 2001, the story jumps back to 1999, where we are properly introduced to Jake (Ansel Elgort), an American now living in Japan, who after trying to learn the language and culture as quickly as possible, applies at Tokyo’s most prestigious newspaper, Meicho Shimbun.

No foreigner (or gaijin) has ever worked at the paper, but Jake changes that after successfully passing the entrance exam, but is soon introduced to the strict hierarchy and code of conduct at Meicho (he does strike up a friendship with two other newcomers).

Jake is closely watched by his stern sub-editor, Eimi Moriyama (Rinko Kikuchi), who has to deal with the young reporter’s western sensibility, and who, like all rookies, has to begin his career by reporting on local police cases.

It’s here he meets two very different law enforcers; Police Chief Hiroto Katagiri (Ken Watanabe) and detective Jin Miyamoto (Hideaki Ito), who each sit on opposing sides of right and wrong.

As he delves deeper into certain criminal stories, Jake is introduced to the those who work for the Yakuza in various capacities, including recent recruit Sato (Sho Kasamatsu), club hostess Samantha (Rachel Keller), and both warring bosses, Ishida (Shun Sugata) and Tozawa (Ayumi Tanida).

Tokyo Vice opens with a bang, with the first episode directed by the legendary Michael Mann, who helmed classic films such as Thief (1981), The Keep (1983), Manhunter (1986), The Last Of The Mohicans (1992), Heat (1995) and The Insider (1999), but after a series of disappointments in recent years (Collateral, Public Enemies, Blackhat), thankfully he is in top form here.

Ultra-stylish and atmospheric, Mann uses the location and its culture specific procedures to maximum effect, giving everything a cinematic feel.

Mann obviously loves the country as much as Ridley Scott did when he made Black Rain in 1989.

While the following episodes aren’t as good, Hikari (the excellent 37 Seconds), Josef Kubota Wladyka (the under-rated Catch The Fair One) and Alan Poul also deliver fine work.

The problems occur in the writing and lead casting. First, the journey of Jake Adelstein is hurt considerably by the simple fact that Elgort (West Side Story, Baby Driver, The Goldfinch) has zero charisma and screen presence, so almost everything to do with the main character feels dull and ineffectual.

This affects the writing, which gives the impression that all the fascinating characters and sub plots have been pushed to the side, but some of these individuals just aren’t explored enough.

As such, it’s frustrating that talented actors such as Watanabe (The Last Samurai, Inception, Unforgiven), Ito (Umizaru film series, Lesson Of The Evil) and especially Kikuchi (Babel, NorwegianWood, Kumiko The Treasure Hunter) aren’t given enough screen time to allow their characters to properly develop.

Leaving strong impressions are Sugata (Confessions OfADog, The Unbroken) and Kasamatsu (the TV series Love You As The World Ends and The Naked Director, both of which come highly recommended).

Technically, the show can’t be faulted, bringing this particular world to dazzling life.

Tokyo Vice finishes on a number of cliffhangers, clearly indicating that there will be a series two.

One hopes the supporting characters get as much screen time the main protagonist, and their backstories examined in closer detail, as this would help elevate the show immeasurably, and possibly cover up the fact that the central star is a major liability.

Petite Maman

■ (PG). 74 minutes. Now showing in selected cinemas.

Using every second of its compact running time to beautiful effect, this gentle but moving drama delicately details the loss of a family member, but seen through the eyes of a young child, who deals with that loss in a particularly unique way.

The movie opens with Nelly (Josephine Sanz) saying goodbye to a number of elderly residents at an aged care centre.

Writer/director Celine Sciamma follows up her critically acclaimed Portrait Of A Lady On Fire with a wholly engaging effort, which quietly works its way to a satisfying, heartwarming conclusion, never once wallowing in cheap sentiment or nostalgia.

■ Tom Kiely, CEO and President of West Hollywood Travel + Tourism Board, popped into Melbourne to tell us what we've all missed over in WeHo in the last couple of years. Turns out it's a lot and we can't wait to go back.

Where to base yourself?

■ Los Angeles is a big city, why is West Hollywood a good place to base yourself?

West Hollywood or WeHo as its affectionately known is literally, and physically the centre of Los Angeles.

If you were to look at a map of the city of LA, West Hollywood is right in the middle of it, so it makes sense to base yourself there.

We’re only really three-square kilometers in size so a very small city; you can walk around anywhere in West Hollywood, and you certainly don’t need a car.

Then if you want to visit Venice Beach, Universal Studios, downtown LA or even Disneyland, you can hire an Uber.

They’re super-efficient, easy and inexpensive.

You can experience everything in West Hollywood. Our shops, restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and all of our hotels are within easy walking distance of each other and it’s a very residential and safe community.

What’s the difference?

■ What is the difference between Hollywood and West Hollywood?

Film production and movie making first started in California a hundred years ago. A lot of those offices were in Hollywood so hence the glamour and the allure of Hollywood because that’s where all the work was at that time.

Hollywood is still where all the production facilities and film studios are, but West Hollywood is a completely different world.

Ours is one of glamour: great restaurants, great shopping, and great nightlife.

If you really want to have an enjoyable experience when you’re in LA, stay in West Hollywood because that’s where you’ll see famous people, the hotels are fantastic, and everything is really close.

■ What is it about West Hollywood that resonates with Aussies?

WeHo appeals to Australians for many reasons. For one thing, we are very welcoming of people that visit. I think because Australians are eager to explore new places and get to know people when they are travelling, West Hollywood residents love that because they are like that too.

Southern California and West Hollywood’s DNA is built from people that got pushed out of mainstream life and came to WeHo because they were different. I think we really respect, appreciate and thrive on that. We love to have visitors from all over the world come and stay with us. And we like to provide a very welcoming environment for them.

■ It’s been a while since we have visited. What’s new in the hood?

There’s a lot going on. People need more places to stay, and we have three new hotels that opened up before the pandemic.

The first hotel that opened was The Edition. It’s a very stylish property with 150 rooms and is super sleek, very sexy, and has a beautiful rooftop bar. It has the most sensational views from that rooftop of any hotel I think, in all of Los Angeles.

The second hotel is called 1 Hotel and is right in the middle of the Sunset Strip. This hotel’s DNA is about being very conscious of the environment, and they also have a really fun restaurant/ club at the top called Harriet’s.

The third hotel that opened is called The Pendry. This brand isn’t so well known in Australia – yet! It’s part of the Montage Group of Hotels, which is a very luxurious five-star brand in the US. It has a rooftop restaurant that is run by Wolfgang Puck, who got his start in West Hollywood and opened Spago way back in the 80s. And now he’s back again running two restaurants at the Pendry.

All up, we have a total of 20 hotels in West Hollywood, offering a selection of great options on the Sunset Strip. Among them is Sunset tower which is the iconic 1930 apartment building where John Wayne, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra lived.

It’s been transformed into a really fun boutique hotel, with my favourite restaurant.

■ What would be on your top five for a visit to the area?

There are lots of great bars clubs and restaurants in West Hollywood, but we can also talk about the great things outside of West Hollywood because everything is so close.

I think one of the things we’re most excited about right now is the opening of The Academy Museum, which just opened and is amazing. It’s a museum about the history of film in Hollywood.

It’s an old original 1940s department store, and famous Italian architect Renzo Piano has added a beautiful glass dome to it. The dome is about five stories high, and looks out over West Hollywood, Hollywood, the Hollywood sign and all over the Hollywood Hills.

Universal Studios or Warner Brothers are two locations very close to us that offer a really great experience if you are interested in filmmaking. Warner Brothers gives one of the best behind the scenes tours.

In West Hollywood, we have places that are iconic and super popular such as the Viper Room and Whiskey a GoGo. Craig’s on Melrose Avenue is a super celebrity hotspot and people are there all the time.

One place that I think is really underrated is downtown Los Angeles because it was a place that was really busy 100 years ago, then died and it was a banking centre.

Now it’s come back to life so there are these really cool buildings that have been vacant for decades but are now trendy restaurants and shops.

Insider tips

■ I’m going to tell you of course the one place you need to visit is EP and LP owned by fellow Australian David Combes.

David has also opened a great coffee place around the corner called SOL, Strings of Life. Urth Caffe is also very popular.

Everybody goes there.

Then, further down the street on Melrose, is a place called Zinque which I believe serves the best coffee in West Hollywood.

We’d also like to say that West Hollywood is completely open. All of our hotels are open, as are our restaurants, bars and clubs. There’s no mask mandate in California anymore.

Magistrate condemns loatnsome neglect

■ The owner of an emaciated dog with a large untreated neck abscess was prosecuted in Melbourne Magistrates’ Courth, with the accused convicted and fined $7500.

After pleading guilty, Ronan Sinha was also given a disqualification order, prohibiting him from owning any domestic animal for a period of 10 years.

The case involved a seven-yearold Bull Arab cross dog named Ryeleigh. The dog’s condition had deteriorated over several months, and by the time Ryeleigh was presented to a veterinarian his large neck abscess had ruptured, resulting in a weeping, bloody discharge.

The treating veterinarian assessed the large, infected wound on his neck and determined that treatment should have been sought several weeks prior to the dog’s presentation at the clinic.

Ryeleigh had also become emaciated and due to his condition, he sadly had to be euthanised on humane grounds.

Belinda Dent, Inspectorate Team Leader at RSPCA Victoria, said it was both exasperating and disturbing that such cases of animal neglect were still happening in the community.

“Last financial year, RSPCA Victoria received over 2,800 cruelty reports relating to dogs who were underweight or who had not received sufficient veterinary treatment for injury or illness.

The Magistrate presiding over the case stated she found there had been a significant act of neglect, that she did not accept defence mitigation, and that the neglect of an animal was loathsome.

McClelland exhibition

■ McClelland will present influential Badtjala artist Fiona Foley’s first major solo exhibition, an important amplification of the voices and perspectives of Aboriginal people.

Curated by QueenslandAboriginal researcher, writer and curator, Angelina Hurley, the exhibition is on tour from QUT Art Museum, where it was first shown in 2021.

Fiona Foley: Veiled Paradise runs at McClelland from 25 June - 9 October 2022 and will see a significant cross-section of key works from Foley’s nearly forty-year career come together in a comprehensive exhibition.

Foley’s work is informed by her ancestral connection to K’gari/ Fraser Island, drawing equally upon its serene beauty and the history of systemic violence and sexual exploitation perpetrated on its shores.

■ One of my favourite singers from the 1950s was Guy Mitchell. Thanks to Mike McHugh, from the Guy Mitchell Appreciation Society, I had the pleasure of recording a radio interview with this legend of American popular music in 1997.

Albert George Cernick was born in Detroit, Michigan, USA, in 1927.

After he left school he worked as a saddle maker. Albert drifted into singing on radio shows then he served in the Navy during WWII. In 1947 he joined Carmen Cavallaro's Band as a vocalist. He came to the attention of Mitch Millerat Columbia Records who said, "You seem like a nice "guy' and my name is Mitchell so we'll call you Guy Mitchell”.

Mitch Miller then set about creating a "new sound”. Mitch introduced the French Horns and a vocal backing group for the string of hit songs they produced in the early 1950s.

Guy sold millions of records and his hit songs included My Heart Cries For You, The Roving Kind, My Truly Truly Truly Fair, She Wears Red Feathers and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He told me, "They were great pub songs."

His film credits included Those Redheads From Seattle, Red Garters and Mirth and Melody. Guyperformed in a Royal Command Performance for Queen Elizabeth in 1954.

In 1956 Guy Mitchell went to the top of the hit parade with his version of Singing The Blues.

Guy continued to record country songs but failed to achieve the same degree of success that he had with his earlier hits.

His last big success was in 1959 with a cover of Ray Price's Heartaches By The Number, written by Harlan Howard.

Guy Mitchell was a guest star in many television series including Perry Mason and Thriller.

In 1961 he had a regular acting role in the TV western series Whispering Smith playing opposite Audie Murphy.

Guy overcame his problems with alcohol and cancer and continued to perform at concerts throughout his life.

He told me he was a fan of my cousin Diana Trask and said that he thought Diana's version of the song Jessie was the best he had ever heard.

In 1997 there was a double CD released that was a great collection of his greatest hits.

It is one of my favourite CDs. In 1991 Guy had a bad accident whilst touring Australia and his life was saved by Australian doctors after his liver had been virtually cut in half after he rolled down a hill and landed on a metal bucket.

Guy was married three times: first to Jackie Loughery, a former Miss USA, in 1952; secondly to Elsa Soronson, formerly Miss Denmark, in 1956; and celebrated 25 years of marriage to his third wife, Betty.

Betty was with him when he passed away in 1999 at the age of 72 following an operation for cancer.

In his final years Guy had been living and working in Las Vegas. His last record was a children's album titled Dusty The Magic Elf. Guy Mitchell made us feel good with his bright happy songs. I treasure our radio interview and it was a privilege to be able to talk with him.

Art After Dark Melbourne

■ City-Wide, late night celebration of culture sees NGV International and NGV Australia open until 1am Over two free culture-filled nights, NGV International and the Ian Potter Centre NGV Australia will be open from 6pm to 1am on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14 as part of Art After Dark, Melbourne, a new major cultural event that will allow audiences rare after-hours access to hew artwork displays, performances and exclusive food and beverage offers.

As part of the event, the NGV International façade ill be illuminated with an iridescent rainbow projection featuring works from the current landmark exhibition Queer Stories from the NGV Collection, which will inspire Art After Dark visitors to explore this popular exhibition which highlights the NGV Collection through a queer lens and celebrates the diverse stories embedded in the more than 400 artworks.

On display for the first time since its world premiere in 2017, and for the first time ever at The Ian Potter Centre NGV Australia is Ron Mueck’s large scale installation Mass, 2026 – 2017 comprising more than 100 hardcast skulls, each measuring 1.5m and collectively weighing approximately five tonnes.

The work will be activated throughout the night by local authors, performers and DJs, offering audiences the chance to experience this much-loved work in new and contemplative ways. The display will close on January 3, 2023.

Melbourne Opera – The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny.

Sunday May 1 saw Melbourne Opera’s production of The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at Melbourne’s Athenaeum Theatre.

Mahagonny is a place riddled with corruption and vice created by con artists with dubious morals which only degenerates from there.

Although the text reads like musical theatre it is and opera and the artists are all opera singers.

A pleasant evening of theatre and opera with a great use of screens and movie events showing large scenes that could not be put on stage.

Melbourne Opera is to be congratulated for bringing such an opera to Melbourne audiences.

The three are Liane Keegan as Leokadja Begbick, Christopher Hillier as Trintiy Moses, and Robert Macfarlane as Fatty ‘The Procurer.

All three performed well and Keegan has a strong and powerful voice adding to the enjoyment of the evening.

The leading prostitute Jenny hill was played by Antoinette Halloran, one of Australia’s most accomplished sopranos. Halloran certainly lived up to her reputation giving a stirling performance not only as an actor, but her voice showed why she is one of Australia’s leading sopranos.

Tenor Kames Egglestone played Jimmy McIntyre , the man who led the four lumberjacks coming to town to have a good time. Egglestone sang well, giving a good acting performance and his scenes with Jenny were a sheer delight.

‘Bank Account’ Billy was portrayed by Christopher Tonkin, giving a good interpretation of the character plus good singing adding to his performance. Darcy Carroll performed ‘Alaska Wolf’ Joe giving a good portrayal particularly in the fight scene.

The fourth lumberjack, Jack O’Brien’ was played by Fraser Findlay. O’Brien had a bad habit and Findlay handled his character as expected not only a good actor but a fine singer.

Exhibiting extensively in NSW over several decades, this is Salmon’s debut solo Melbourne exhibition.

Rourke’s Reviews ■ Bubble (PG). 100 minutes. Now streaming on Netflix. Gorgeously animated and imaginatively designed, what stops Bubble from truly soaring is a lack of richly detailed characters, which are always a part of the best anime. Set in the near future when mysterious bubbles rain from the sky, engulfing Tokyo within one giant bubble-like dome, a community of largely young people, who have left the outside world to live in this weird, dangerous environment, challenge each other to high risk parkour races, to win essentials like food and fuel. The best is Hibiki, part of team Blue Blazers, who has a special ability to use the floating bubbles as platforms during these fast-paced contests, but is somewhat derided by his team mates due to his loner attitude. Each bubble seems to have its own individual persona, and one takes a shine to Hibiki, and when the teenager finds himself in trouble, the strange entity turns into a teenage girl so she can save him. Becoming a part of the team, the new arrival, named Uta, is devoted to Hibiki, and the two will attempt to figure out how to save Tokyo from its almost post-apocalyptic setting. Now if some of this sounds familiar, it’s because Bubble is a reworking of the classic tale The Little Mermaid, and it is interesting to see how the writers have weaved it into decidedly anime surroundings. However, as the story plays out, the gallery of characters lack depth and definition, muting its emotional centre, and undercuts the potentially relevant themes and issues experienced by young people today. Not helping matters is the narrative element where the Little Mermaid fable is explicitly connected to what is happening to the two young heroes, as if the film-makers want to make sure viewers get what the source material is. Despite these failings, the film does entertain, due to its astounding technical achievements. The animation is eyepopping, and the altered Tokyo environment is wonderfully designed, while the sound is suitably enveloping. Bubble is a mixed blessing, and in many ways a missed opportunity, but while not in the same league as films from the likes of Hayao Miyazaki, Satoshi Kon, Mamoru Hosoda and Makoto Shinkai, it is enjoyable, and while lacking true substance, the surface is something to behold.

Open field in South Australian Derby

■ Some of Australia’s best three-year-olds will compete in this year’s South Derby over 2500 metres at Morphettville, this Saturday (May 14).

The early favoUrite is the James Cummings trained Algeron, who has the form on the board with a second in the Victoria Derby last year and an impressive winner of the VRC St Leger over 2800 metres at Flemington on ANZAC Day. He is by the Irish Sire, Teofilo, and is smart on his day.

As proven the distance won’t worry him, winning over 2800 in the St Leger.

Next, we have the former New Zealander, Detanator Jack, a winner of three races and a second at Sandown Park.

He is prepared by leading trainers, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, and is by leading sire, Tackleberry.

The Danny O’Brien trained filly, El Patroness, blitzed them in the Australian Oaks over 2400 metres on a Heavy 10 at Randwick back on April 9 winning in superb style.

Punched out by leading Victorian rider, Damian Lane, she swamped them in the run home.

On that run, and if she gets the right conditions will be hard to beat.

The South Australian three-year-old, Harleymoven, sent out an odds-on favourite in the Chairman’s Stakes at Morphettville, she came from a mile back, Just failing to grab the Victorian gelding, Jungle Magnate, ridden by Damien Oliver in the care of Mick Price and Michael Kent Junior.

Prior to his win in the Chairman’s, he won the Mornington Guineas, over 1600 metres, third up after a spell. No worries about the trip in my opinion.

One we don’t know much about is the former New Zealander, Pinarello, now with Ciaron Maher and David Eustace.

It had good form in New Zealand and would pay to check the market.

One to keep your eye on is the Mick PriceMick Kent Junior trained Daises,she was never in the hunt after drawing out in barrier 17, and her rider, Mark Zahara, was stuck out on a limb. It would pay to forget that run.

At her previous outing she finished a good third to the highly promising Harleymoven.

The Trent Busuttin-Natalie Young trained Commander Harry was taken out at Caulfield on April 9, and may not be ready.

Prior to that he ran third at Mornington in an open handicap, finishing a good third to the winner of the Chairman’s Stakes, Jungle Magnate, so the run was good.

Another with ability is the Ben Hayes and his brother J.D, trained, All So Clear.

A recent winner at Pakenham, it impressed good judges, being nicely bred, out of the Cox Plate winner, So You Think.

Elzamee, is another of the Maher-Eustace team, being by the prolific Japanese sire, Deep Impact.

It would pay to check the market on the day.

Prix De Turn is a winner of the coveted Alister Clark Stakes run at Moonee Valley last year.

The Electronic Wills and Online Witnessing Committee is a volunteer run organisation that is doing a road tour during Law Week 2022 to ensure people learn about electronically signing documents. Local News Budget time

■ Frankston City Council has endorsed the proposed 2022-2026 Budget (including 20222023 Council Plan initiatives) and now invites public submissions.

Mayor Cr Nathan Conroy said the proposed budget strikes the balance between providing essential services and capital works for the community with the future investment needed to drive Frankston as a destination of opportunity, growth and change.

“As we continue to prioritise essential services such as roads, drainage and waste, we must also invest in the buildings, infrastructure, services and programs that make Frankston a wonderful place to live, work, play and invest,” Cr Conroy said.

“We must be responsible and respectful of ratepayer funds while making the necessary investments to ensure Frankston is both socially and economically strong.

“Frankston is on the move – this is an exciting time for us all. Investing in the revitalisation and renewal of our City is essential and includes major City changing projects such as the revitalisation of the Nepean Highway and investment in Frankston’s foreshore.

“This investment will benefit Frankston over the long term and is vital to the repositioning of Frankston as the vibrant, dynamic and exciting place that locals love, people want to visit, and investors are attracted to.
