■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish has called on the State Minister for Health to provide a step-by-step process that needs to be followed for people to easily cross the Victorian / NSW border for medical purposes and safely return home, in a bid to make the application process easier. "Families and individuals applying for a travel permit and exemption have found the process difficult to locate online, unclear who they need to contact and what documentation needs to be provided,” Ms McLeish said. “The whole process is stressful and time consuming. A clear, simple outline needs to be provided to give people peace of mind that they have done the right thing, will make it to their medical appointments and safely back home without breaking any rules," Ms McLeish said. Dindi to become refugee welcome zone? ■ Murrindindi Council will consider declaring the Shire as a 'Refugee Welcome Zone'. The consideration is due to take place at its scheduled meeting on Wednesday (Sept. 22). The 'Refugee Welcome Zone' is an initiative sponsored by the Refugee Council of Australia and supported by Rural Australians for Refugees, an association of 90 local groups trying to improve the situation for asylum seekers and refugees in Australia. Murrindindi Council's CEO Livia Bonazzi said officers are recommending Council sign the declaration to become a 'Refugee Welcome Zone' and, in so doing, join 52 other Victorian councils to be listed as Refugee Welcome Zones. “A Refugee Welcome Zone is a Local Government Area which has made a commitment to welcoming refugees into the community, upholding their rights and demonstrating compassion for refugees, as well as enhancing cultural and religious diversity,” Ms Bonazzi said. “In making their recommendation to sign the declaration, Council officers considered a number of factors - in particular, the strong culture of inclusion in Murrindindi Shire. “Our newly-adopted 10-Year Community Vision states that we are inclusive, embrace diversity, encourage the participation of all and welcome new residents and visitors to enjoy

Div. 2 season cancelled ■ The AFL Outer East, based in Kilsyth, which co-ordinates Alexandra Football Netball Club senior football and netball competitions, has advised that the 2021 season is now cancelled with the League to announce Best and Fairest, goal kicker and goal shooter winners at a virtual presentation function in coming weeks. AFL Goulburn Murray, based in Shepparton, which co-ordinates the club’s junior football and netball competitions in the Seymour District Junior Football Netball League, advised that the Advisory Committee was to meet last week to make a determination on the season. Due to current restrictions, there is no junior or senior training for football and netball, the social rooms are closed until further notice. In coming weeks, decisions will be made re the Alexandra Football Netball Club Junior Presentation function and the Alexandra Football Netball Club Senior Presentation function which is scheduled for Saturday, October 2 at the Club rooms.

The Club is planning ahead and is pleased to announce the re-appointment of Nick Wal as senior football coach and Scott Ferrier as Reserves football coach for the 2022 season. The Club is inviting expressions of interest for coaches in all senior netball grades and under 17 football team competing on Saturdays together with all junior football and netball coaches competing on Sundays. In late 2015, the Alexandra Football Netball Club commenced an aluminium can recycling project. Key aim of the project is to reduce the amount of material going into landfill as well as providing some income for the Club. As at August, the project has collected 3368 kilograms of aluminium cans since October, 2020 which have been recycled. Density limit call for regional pubs ■ Eildon MLA Cindy McLeish is calling for for density limits, not patron caps, to be immediately reinstated for the safe reopening of regional hospitality venues. Ms McLeish said regional hospitality businesses are confused and frustrated at the Andrews Labor Government's chaotic COVID response. "Regional small businesses were gutted after Daniel Andrews imposed unworkably low patron limits in the latest round of 'eased' regional restrictions,” Ms McLeish said. "Venues that are licensed to seat hundreds of diners are now limited to just 10 inside and 20 outside, regardless of their physical size. “Yo-yoing in and out of lockdown is taking a harsh toll on regional businesses who are being run into the ground. “These low number patron caps are just another slap in the face as many hospitality businesses will be forced to stay closed. “Daniel Andrews must deliver a plan that gives businesses and their staff certainty and allows them to plan for the future. "This is the eighth set of rules for hospitality businesses,” Ms McLeish said.

Pop-up vax site at Hazel Glen
■ A new pop-up vaccination site is being established at Hazel Glen, in the City of Whittlesea. The State Government says it is bringing the vaccines to areas that need them most. The launch sees a massive community popup vaccination program targeting 100 priority postcodes across the state, with an immediate focus on the northern and western suburbs of Melbourne. New vaccination records bare eing set every day and under 100,000 doses to go before the state reaches one million doses in five weeks target. Using already announced supply secured through agreements with Singapore and the United Kingdom, Victoria is launching a new program covering 100 postcodes that establishes community and school based pop ups in areas that need them most and where barriers to vaccination may exist. Five community-based pop-ups and eight school-based pop-ups will initially begin administering vaccinations over the next two weeks, with many more to open soon. The community pop-ups are being hosted in council and religious settings to offer tailored support for local diverse communities, including a Hindu temple site in Mill Park. The next round of secondary schools will provide access to COVID-19 vaccines for students and their families, staff and those in the local community. Additional bookings will be available at the Broadmeadows Town Hall, South Morang Plenty Ranges Arts and Convention Centre and the Ford Factory in Campbellfield. Several sites will also be extending opening hours until 8pm, and more Pfizer and AstraZeneca doses will be released this week across state sites. “These new sites have been established in areas with identified vulnerabilities and barriers to access, and – together with the 70 school pop-up clinics – will ensure all VCE students can get vaccinated during the current blitz,” said Martin Foley, State Health Minister. Monitor at Strathbogie ■ A municipal monitor has been appointed to the Strathbogie Shire Council to help guide good governance. Acting Minister for Local Government MaryAnne Thomas announced the appointment of Janet Dore as monitor for Strathbogie Shire Council for a term of six months. The appointment was made at the request of the council’s Mayor and Chief Executive Officer to help guide the council as they serve their community. Ms Dore will work closely with the council to improve governance practices and help councillors understand their roles and responsibilities under the Local Government Act. Ms Dore has senior executive experience dealing with changing environments at local and state government organisations, as well as on boards in government and the not-forprofit sector. Most recently she served as interim Chief Executive Officer of Ballarat City Council, she was a municipal monitor at Ararat City Council from 2017 to 2019 and is a previous interim Chief Executive at the Victorian Responsible Gambling Authority.

Ms Dore will work closely with the council’s Chief Executive Officer and Mayor to assist them in implementing good governance processes and will report back to the Minister on the council’s progress at the end of her term. The project is being delivered by PwC in partnership with eminent academics Professor Graham Sansom, Adjunct Professor at University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and Professor Anona Armstrong , Emeritus Professor at the Victoria University College of Law and Justice. Consultation closes
■ There is one day remaining for comment on the City of Whittlesea Community Plan 2021-25 and a proposed Long-Term Financial Plan 2021-2031. The Council earlier this year asked residents that the City of Whittlesea should focus on over the next four years to help prepare the Community Plan. Priorities were nominated for more parks and playgrounds, roads, support for local business, biodiversity and improving waste management. “We’re created initiatives around these themes and we want to check-in with our community to make sure we’ve got it right. ■ Seymour District Junior Football Netball League made the determination last week to cancel the remainder of the 2021 Seymour DJFNL season to communities safe. ■ Whittlesea Football Netball Club has announced the signing of Jarrad Waite. Jarrad’s AFL career spanned over 16 years with Carlton and North Melbourne, 244 games and 377 goals. Jarrad played 184 games and kicked 252 goals for Carlton Football Club from 2003-2014. Jarrad was a part of Carlton’s Leadership Group in 2007, 2012, 2013 and was the Carlton leading goal kicker in 2014. Jarrad moved to North Melbourne Football Club in 2015 and played there until 2018, adding another 60 AFL games and 125 goals to his name. Since then, Jarrad has played the last two seasons at VAFA powerhouse St Kevins Old Boys in Premier Division. Jarrad has signed on with the WFNC as a Playing Assistant Coach. Jarrad is a 194cm (6’4”) and 96-kg key forward. Jarrad is looking forward to working closely with the young and exciting group on and off the field. - Whittlesea Football Netball Club

■ Murrindindi Shire Council says it needs help to reduce the impact of European Wasps. “ By trapping just one Queen Wasp, you could stop thousands of 'worker wasps' causing a nuisance at barbecues, cafes and while dining outdoors - and it'll help reduce the negative impact these pests have on our environment,” said a Council representative. “You can make your own Queen wasp trap with a few standard household items like an empty milk or juice bottle, a wooden skewer and a piece of fruit. “You can view a short video on how to make a wasp trap and find an information sheet at murrindindi.vic.gov.au/wasps or give us a call and we will send an information sheet to you. “It is important to check your trap regularly and identify what you've caught. “We don't want native wasps or bees getting caught in traps. Queen European Wasps can be identified by their bright yellow and black stripe bandings and are often found hovering near buildings, plants and wood or mulch piles. “They are much larger than native wasps, bees and even European 'worker' wasps and fly much slower.” Murrindindi Council's Environment Portfolio Councillor Karine Haslam said European Wasps pose a safety risk to residents and pets due to their aggressive behavior. “They spend the majority of their time foraging for food and are particularly attracted to the food and beverages we enjoy, including meats and juices. They also like pet food - which poses a real danger to our furry friends,” said Cr Haslam. “In addition to these risks, European Wasps can have significant negative impacts on our environment. They compete with and prey on native insects, which affects the biodiversity of our region. “They can also damage horticultural crops like grapes and stone fruits, which impacts our commercial industries and home growers. “In their natural European habitat, entire wasp colonies die off during their much colder winters, leaving just the Queen alive to breed once the weather warms up again. “In Australia, we experience relatively milder temperatures during winter. And in some cases, this allows whole wasp colonies to survive the winter, when normally only the Queen wasp would,” Cr Haslam said. “That's why it is so important to trap and destroy Queen wasps early, before they get a chance to breed. “We're calling on everyone who can help out to learn how to safely trap Queen wasps so we can do our bit in managing this pest,” Cr Haslam said. - Trudi Elkington
● Augustus and cast in in I’ve Got A Golden Ticket. Photo: Maree Boliancu. ■ Alexandra Secondary College students last month performed in a school production called I've Got A Golden Ticket. The production was written by Matilda Walker (a former ASC student) and is a local take on the film Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The event was held at the school hall (in line with COVID-19 restrictions) and was also live-streamed online for audiences who couldn't attend the event in person. A total of 100 people watched the production in person (50 people each night) and the live-stream attracted around 500 views on the night. The production has been watched online by a further 800 viewers since then. Cast and crew overcame a range of obstacles in getting this production up and running. Significant delays due to COVID-19 restrictions delayed planning and rehearsals and opening night. But, like true professionals, ASC students were determined that 'the show must go on' and were thrilled to get the chance to perform. Murrindindi Council's Youth Services Team supported this event with funding from the Victorian Government's 'FReeZa' Youth Development Program.
