Correction about Rotary students

■ Last week’s Local People section included reference to the Rotary Club of Yea’s youth exchange program. Content supplied by that club suggested that Cr Sue Carpenter was involved with the Club’s first exchange student. This was correct. The first Rotary Club of Yea outward exchange student was Gina Callander, daughter of Daryl Callander and the late Heather Callander in 1987.

Local Sport Govt. grant for Pistol Association ■ A local sports club in the Yarra Ranges has been awarded pathway grants enabling them to compete at the top level. Harriet Shing, Member for Eastern Victoria , announced that the Victorian Amateur Pistol Association has been awarded a grant from the Government’s Athlete Pathway Grants Program. The association has received $6000 to attend the National Action Match Championship and State Championships. The program benefits athletes and teams from a wide range of sport and recreation activities; from surfing to goalball and archery to ten pin bowls and helps address the impact of Coronavirus on many of our athletes’ travel plans. Since the grants were introduced by the Victorian Government in 2015, 1630 grants have been awarded, totalling more than $2.9 million helping teams and individual athletes reach their goal. Ms Shing said that the grants are part of the Government’s commitment to sport and active recreation, gender equality and encouraging all Victorians to get out there and get active. Ros Spence, Minister for Community Sport, said: “With athletes slowly returning to competition, the Victorian Government is helping our athletes and future champions by removing the barriers associated with travel and accommodation costs so they can focus on realising their sporting dreams.” “The Athlete Pathway Grant Program lets our rising athletes take the step from community to national competition.” Ms Shing said: “The Athlete Pathway Program is giving grassroots clubs and teams across our region the meaningful support they need to participate in elite competition. “These grants are a really important part of making our clubs more inclusive and I would urge local teams to grasp the opportunities they present, by applying for funding,” Ms Shing said. - Contributed

Wellbeing cash for NE Victoria

■ A program to support the mental health and wellbeing needs of younger veterans in the electorate of Indi has received a total of $44,000 in funding through the Supporting Younger Veterans grants program. Senator Bridget McKenzie said the funds would assist local organisations to ensure veterans and their families continued to get the support they need as they establish their civilian lives. “This particular funding has been allocated to Mounted Missions Limited to provide two long weekend retreats for 10 veterans and partners, which includes social and mental health activities,” Senator McKenzie said. “The program is residential in Wangaratta and includes accommodation and meals, as well as childcare for any children if required. ““It is fantastic for the nearly 3500 veterans and their families in my electorate and I encourage them to engage with some of these projects. “Congratulations to the successful applicants for this round and thank you for the ongoing support that you offer to the veteran community,” Senator McKenzie said. - Contributed
