Proud to be members of Ivanhoe School As Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge is about to celebrate its 70th anniversary, we have important work to complete. The Rev. Sydney Buckley founded St James’ Grammar School , with just 12 first-day pupils. The School now has about 1700 students. Sydney Buckley founded Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge, with its first meeting held on July 2, 1946, at the Ivalda Masonic Temple. The Lodge has been an integral part of School life for those 70 years. Ivanhoe Grammar School became co-educational in 1992. Its students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Charity is at the heart of Freemasonry. Aware that a number of families experience financial hardship, members of the Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge set about to provide a modest bursary to assist those in need. The School has encouraged us to widen our scope, with the view that the most good can be achieved with our contribution directed to the IGS Scholarship Fund.

The Rev. Peter Holloway The members of Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge resolved in 2014 to name an annual bursary/scholarship in memory of the late Rev. C.T. ‘Peter’ Holloway. In 1935, as a young teenager in Bairnsdale, Peter won a residential scholarship to Ivanhoe Grammar School. It changed his life. He first worked in banking, then enlisted as an infantry soldier, serving with the 39th Battalion in New Guinea. He entered the Anglican ministry in 1944, serving at locations including St Arnaud, Quambatook, Birchip, Newhaven, Boort, Carrum, Chelsea, Bonbeach and Strathmore. Peter became the full-time Airport Chaplain at Melbourne Airport, the first in Australia. Peter was initiated as a Freemason at Quambatook in 1947. He became a member of many Craft Lodges, serving as Master of Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge in 1969. He was conferred with Grand Lodge honours, being promoted to Past Grand Inspector of Workings. He was Past Deputy Grand Master of Victoria’s Mark Lodges. Peter’s Masonic involvements were many, including Royal Arch Chapter and Mark Lodge, Royal Ark Mariners and Knights Templars. His community work included Scouts, the Anglican Boys Society, Red Cross, RSL, as a Hospital chaplain, and prominent in the 39th Battalion Association.

Our opportunity

Ivanhoe Grammarians Lodge is presenting its scholarship fund donation to the School at the Lodge’s ‘Buckley Night’ each February. Our first cheque was for $8000.

The 2016 contribution for the Scholarship’ will comprise some Lodge funds, donations from members, and $4000 from the Freemasons Foundation Victoria.

The School has advised that a Year 10 girl has been named as the first recipient of The Rev. Peter Holloway - Ivanhoe Grammarians Masonic Lodge Scholarship. The Lodge’s funding will help this student complete Years 10, 11 and 12 at Ivanhoe. We are honourbound to fully fund our $8000 commitment in 2016 and 2017.

If you are able, will you please consider a donation to the ‘Rev. Peter Holloway Ivanhoe Grammarians Masonic Lodge Scholarship’? Our donation form is overleaf.
