CIMB SINGAPORE: A NEW ERA OF BANKING
020
CIMB SINGAPORE IS SHAPING THE FUTURE OF BANKING WITH FORWARD-THINKING SPACES AND SERVICES THAT OFFER BOTH STAFF AND CUSTOMERS A BOLD AND DYNAMIC EXPERIENCE.
THIS PHOTO: CIMB Preferred Banking customers can access the lounge, which is designed for comfort and privacy.
C
IMB Singapore’s relocation to 30 Raffles Place marks a bold reimagining of the traditional banking environment. Previously based at Singapore Land Tower for 12 years, the bank’s relocation to the newly rebranded CIMB Plaza (formerly Change Alley Mall) is part of CIMB’s broader strategy to reinforce its position as a niche challenger bank and premier hub for Affluent Banking services. The new bank branch begins with a digital kiosk on the ground floor and consolidates its various banking operations into one cohesive space across three floors. The building now efficiently integrates front-facing customer services with the operational needs of the bank. Upon arriving at CIMB Plaza’s main entrance on the ground floor, customers are welcomed by the CIMB Bank Express digital kiosk. Designed to establish a strong first impression of CIMB’s offerings, this high-tech, interactive installation features a dynamic digital media wall and immersive elements. Positioned strategically near the escalator, which leads to the banking hall and offices on Levels 3, 4 and 5, the kiosk serves as a bridge between traditional banking and digital innovation, particularly appealing to younger, tech-savvy customers seeking an innovative approach to financial services. As clients ascend to Level 3, they arrive at the heart of CIMB’s banking operations, where the design prioritises accessibility and privacy. CIMB Private Banking and Preferred Banking customers can also access the lounges, which are designed for comfort and privacy. The layout ensures a smooth transition from banking services to staff-only areas while maintaining security.
Moving up to Level 4, the entire floor is dedicated to internal offices and meeting spaces, including the “Front of House” meeting zone and the CIMB Marketplace, a central collaborative space for staff. Designed to encourage interaction and foster innovation, the Marketplace includes high ceilings, modern furnishings, and vibrant colours to create a comfortable and dynamic environment for cross-functional collaboration. In contrast, the Front of House is carefully crafted to exude professionalism, with discreet pathways for VIPs ensuring their privacy and comfort. Finally, Level 5 houses the trading floor, designed with high ceilings, acoustic insulation, and ergonomic workstations to support treasury and trading operations. This specialised environment maximises efficiency and minimises distractions, with restricted access points to maintain security and focus. The successful completion of this project demonstrates the meticulous planning and collaboration that went into realising CIMB Singapore’s vision for a futureforward banking environment. In 2025, MGroup’s exceptional work on this project has garnered three Global Design Awards (GDA), securing wins in the Commercial Office Spaces category for CIMB Front of House and CIMB Marketplace, and in the Public Spaces category for CIMB Bank Express digital kiosk. As a premier platform bridging global designers and international markets, the Global Design Awards stand as a pinnacle of industry recognition, celebrating excellence in architectural and interior design.

n a bold move to redefine traditional banking spaces, CIMB Singapore has relocated to 30 Raffles Place, rebranding the former Change Alley Mall as CIMB Plaza. This transformation highlights the bank’s strategic focus on solidifying its role as a niche challenger bank and a premier hub for Affluent Banking services in Singapore, offering a range of services such as investments, financing, and wealth management. The bank’s newly revamped space at CIMB Plaza seamlessly blends sophistication with cutting-edge digital features, introducing lounges designed for affluent clients, a state-of-the-art digital kiosk, modern banking hall, collaborative workspaces, and the CIMB Marketplace. CEO of CIMB Singapore, Victor Lee Meng Teck, emphasised the bank’s commitment to innovation, aiming to make banking not just convenient but also enjoyable and interactive for customers.

The starting point of this transformation is the CIMB Bank Express digital kiosk, located prominently at the ground floor of CIMB Plaza. Designed by MGroup, CIMB Bank Express redefines the banking kiosk concept through a futuristic, technology-driven space that captures attention and invites curiosity. Positioned near the escalator leading to CIMB’s banking spaces on Level 3, this kiosk makes a striking first impression on visitors. Utilising a dynamic curved digital media wall, bold colours, and a blend of interactive features, it aims to create an immersive, welcoming environment.

The kiosk is, first and foremost, designed to bridge the gap between traditional banking and the digital age, offering an interactive experience that appeals to all visitors, particularly younger customers. Central to the kiosk’s design is a curved digital media wall, displaying vibrant graphics to attract attention along the long corridor of CIMB Plaza. This wall serves as an eye-catching digital canvas, featuring animations, branding, and visual content that sets the tone for a modern banking experience. Among its technological highlights is a 3D virtual teller, positioned at the kiosk’s greeting counter. This virtual guide assists customers by providing information about services and even simulating multilingual greetings.
THIS PHOTO: Interactive games and a gift redemption machine add a playful, engaging element to the CIMB Bank Express experience.
Additionally, interactive tabletop screens allow visitors to explore self-service banking, product demonstrations, and account applications, as well as engage in exciting games. One of the most innovative aspects of the CIMB Bank Express digital kiosk is its dedicated gaming area, designed to attract younger audiences and spark curiosity. This private gaming space features motion-activated games where participants can earn tokens redeemable for prizes, blending entertainment with a learning experience about CIMB’s services. The games are not only a playful addition but also encourage visitors to interact with the kiosk’s digital offerings, deepening their engagement with the CIMB brand.

THIS PHOTO: The RGB LED lighting spans from the wall to the ceiling, complemented by natural plants that reduce noise and enhance comfort.
MGroup employed bold colours and innovative lighting to emphasise CIMB’s brand identity while creating a vibrant, engaging atmosphere. RGB LED lights embedded within a perforated wall and ceiling create a dynamic, colour-changing effect that lends the space a futuristic, “Star Wars”-inspired ambience. These lights gradually shift through colours, including CIMB’s brand hues, giving the kiosk a lively presence that resonates with both the tech-savvy and casual visitors. The use of plants adds a spot of green and softens the aesthetic of the space while dampening noise to make the kiosk more welcoming and comfortable. The sleek black motifs and marble tile patterns, a nod to the original Change Alley Mall’s classical architecture, further adds sophistication, connecting the old with the new.
As the first touchpoint for customers, the CIMB Bank Express digital kiosk introduces a fresh, interactive approach that appeals to both tech-savvy and traditional users. Through this dynamic feature, CIMB sets a new benchmark for customer-focused services while embracing the future of banking. “The goal was to create a futuristic yet inviting environment that sparks curiosity and engagement,” MGroup comments. “Key design elements were carefully curated to deliver a vibrant, multi-sensory experience that meets evolving banking needs in the digital age.” Blending functionality with cutting-edge tech, the CIMB Bank Express digital kiosk has been recognised with the Global Design Awards 2025.

“Visitors arriving via the escalator are intuitively directed to their respective zones, whether they are looking for assistance with general banking, or are heading towards the Private Banking and Preferred Banking lounges,” MGroup elaborates. “The inclusion of an ATM at the entrance ensures that customers with quick transactional needs can bypass the hall, streamlining foot traffic within the space.” A concierge counter at the front entrance serves as the primary point of assistance, helping customers navigate the space with ease. Staff stationed here direct visitors to the appropriate sections based on their needs, such as routine banking services, help with financial products, or consultations with banking representatives. Positioned to face the main media TV display, the counter ensures that customers stay informed and engaged with the bank’s offerings while waiting for their turn.

CIMB BANK BRANCH 038 THIS PHOTO: Marble flooring is integrated across all zones, creating a cohesive and premium banking environment.
Upon entering the CIMB Bank Branch, visitors are enveloped in a sleek, contemporary aesthetic defined by a polished white marble palette. An eye-catching element is the bespoke signage feature wall, crafted from book-matched marble to create a diamond shape—a design inspired by CIMB’s branding guidelines. This wall functions as both an artistic statement and a visual anchor within the hall. “The floor plan seamlessly integrates marble flooring across all zones, connecting CIMB’s different banking spaces into a unified spatial experience. It’s part of our design intention to maintain a cohesive and premium banking environment that embodies CIMB’s brand values,” MGroup says. Inside, the layout of the CIMB Bank Branch emphasises accessibility and openness, with its design theme deeply rooted in CIMB’s branding. Dynamic shapes and clean lines, inspired by the bank’s logo, create a cohesive visual identity. THIS PHOTO: Unique ceiling effects complement the dynamic carpet patterns, enhancing the space with a sense of openness and visual harmony.
For example, teller counters are located just beyond the concierge counter, allowing customers to transition smoothly from one service point to the next. These counters also feature a logo wall that connects visually to the concierge area, ensuring design cohesion throughout the space. Furthermore, an open ceiling design with an acoustic trellis enhances the sense of spaciousness while effectively reducing noise, elevating the overall customer experience. On top of this, MGroup has also introduced a distinctive feature to the CIMB Bank Branch —a central lounge area that stands out with its striking organic shape, highlighted by a darker-toned carpet featuring dynamic patterns. Custom-made sofas echo the carpeting’s dynamic forms, adding both comfort and sophistication. Overhead, layered lighting effects complement the floor design, enhancing the space’s openness and visual harmony. At the far end of the branch, the design takes an unexpected turn with a luxurious wood finish and a
vibrant green moss wall in the manager’s cubicle. This enclosed, quiet area exudes exclusivity while maintaining continuity with the overall design. Curved cubicles in this section echo the wooden panel design of the fourth floor, creating a subtle connection between levels. The natural elements, combined with rich textures, offer a serene and sophisticated atmosphere, reinforcing the refined feel of the space while promoting a sense of calmness and focus. “Our approach to the CIMB Bank Branch design centres on creating an open, modern space that prioritises easy navigation and convenience while incorporating elements of warmth and luxury to elevate the customer experience,” MGroup remarks. “By balancing clean lines, bespoke finishes, and a focus on acoustics, we have crafted the branch as a refined space that caters to all banking needs while encapsulating both functionality and a premium atmosphere.”

without compromising the distinct identity of each space. “As you enter, you’ll notice that the Preferred Banking area features red laminated glass, with the CIMB logo displayed prominently,” MGroup notes. “Our intention is to highlight the brand elements and establish a premium atmosphere from the moment you arrive.” From the entrance, the space leads customers into an upscale waiting space offering sweeping views of Singapore’s financial district surrounding the bustling Raffles Place MRT station. A high ceiling with customdesigned wooden trellis and gold-rim lighting bathes the area in natural light, creating an airy, welcoming environment. The lounge’s warm-toned premium leather furniture and custom carpeting convey a luxurious vibe. Subtle nods to the branding shape are further echoed in the simplified wooden panel designs, seamlessly integrating the fabric panels and operable walls. “From the reception, all other rooms are lined with glass walls featuring a frosted pattern. The diamond shape in the frosting ties into the dynamic wood elements, fabric panels, carpets, and flooring, all subtly echoing the CIMB logo,” MGroup explains.

The Preferred Banking Lounge comprises numerous meeting rooms, each thoughtfully designed with a booking system panel for convenient scheduling. Constructed with operable walls, these rooms are highly adaptable – they can be easily combined into a larger space to accommodate various functions. “Although the rooms can be opened up, our priority is to maintain the flow of natural light. This means minimising obstructions around the window area. To achieve this, less is more – we used simple design elements to infuse a touch of luxury while ensuring that light continues to fill the space comfortably throughout the day,” adds MGroup. Designed to capture the same stunning city views as the waiting area, the meeting rooms feature floor-toceiling windows that bring in natural light and panoramic vistas. However, design elements are kept minimal in the rooms to preserve a bright and airy atmosphere. Moving further into the Preferred Banking Lounge, the meeting rooms are carefully crafted to prioritise privacy and discretion. These rooms retain visual connectivity to the rest of the Preferred Banking Lounge, with premium materials and the continuation of design motifs. While unique furnishing details are utilised, the design outcome ensures these rooms still reflect a luxurious vibe throughout the space. “Ultimately, the aim was to design a unique environment where luxury meets function to create an enriching banking experience,” MGroup says. “Every element was carefully selected to enhance the overall atmosphere, ensuring that clients feel valued and immersed in an exclusive space.

“Walking through the Marketplace, you’re instantly transported to a lively French street. The design brings a refreshing touch of the outdoors inside, creating an open, vibrant atmosphere,” says MGroup. Within the Marketplace, the hub’s calming colour scheme of light greens and shades of blue is accentuated by CIMB’s brand identity. Bold red tones are subtly incorporated into wall treatments and canopy structures, balancing the vibrant café design with the organisation’s visual brand. This contrasts with the Front of House waiting lobby, which takes on a clean and pristine white palette to create a sleek and professional first impression. However, once guests move into the Marketplace, they are immediately immersed in a completely different environment — one that refreshes and energises, with bright colours and dynamic decor that inspire creativity, collaboration, and a sense of community. As it was important to preserve the open, communal nature of the space, light boxes and planter boxes were implemented to demarcate different zones without the need for walls or partitions. In addition, mosaic flooring and custom ceiling designs punctuate the café, visually defining seating areas while maintaining the flowing and spacious layout that sparks connection. At its core, the 7,000 sqft office revolves around a central horizontal axis that organises and connects the primary work zones. Spaces flow seamlessly from one zone to another within an open layout that prioritises accessibility and flexibility. This design strategy ensures an intuitive navigation experience, where each zone transitions naturally without the interruption of traditional walls or partitions. Instead, elements like customdesigned planter boxes demarcate areas, enhancing privacy while introducing biophilic elements into the workplace. In addition, natural light coming through the expansive stretch of windows is used to its full potential, keeping the workspace bright and energy-efficient throughout the day. Designed to be a modern, flexible, and future-ready workspace, the new office supports greater productivity and efficiency while reinforcing Ipsos’ role as a key regional hub. “Singapore is a strategic market, home to more than 5,000 regional headquarters, making it a key hub for our businesses operating across multiple markets,” Katharine Zhou, Country Manager of Ipsos in Singapore says. “The Gateway East office (very aptly named) serves as our gateway to the APAC region, supporting our multi-market programs and regional/ global clients.” With research becoming increasingly dynamic, Ipsos also required a workspace that fosters collaboration while embracing flexibility. Engaging MGroup for the second time, the company sought to create an environment that allows teams to work efficiently, share knowledge effortlessly, and leverage digital tools to enhance research capabilities. Utilising an Activity Based Working (ABW) work model, Ipsos’ office integrates advanced technology and hybrid working solutions, enabling teams to stay connected regardless of location.
Above all, Ipsos’ commitment to a “Client First” approach is reflected in its culture of expertise, innovation, and teamwork. The office environment supports this by offering collaborative zones that encourage idea-sharing and strategic discussions, reinforcing Ipsos’ dedication to delivering insightful and impactful research. At the same time, the company values sustainable growth and employee well-being, ensuring that the new workspace balances high-performance work with an engaging and adaptable atmosphere. Ipsos also places a strong emphasis on sustainability and workplace innovation. To accommodate these commitments, the office space incorporates biophilic design elements, energy-efficient lighting, and sustainable materials, creating a healthier and more environmentally responsible workplace. These features contribute to employee well-being by enhancing air quality, reducing stress, and fostering creativity and productivity. Beyond design, Ipsos has embedded sustainable practices into its daily operations, adopting a paperless workflow, sourcing office supplies responsibly, and implementing energy-efficient systems to minimise their carbon footprint. “Ipsos also actively promotes employee engagement in sustainability efforts. For example, we encourage teams to adopt greener habits in their work routines,” Katharine adds. “Integrating these initiatives into our workplace culture contributes to our long-term commitment to sustainability and corporate responsibility.” For the coming years, Ipsos’ key priorities will focus on innovation, digital transformation, and sustainable growth. By leveraging AI-driven analytics, its Singapore office will remain a critical hub for delivering intelligence that empowers businesses to make the right decisions at the right time while fostering a dynamic workplace where collaboration and expertise drive meaningful insights.

This clean, crisp palette is further punctuated by subtle Oriental elements, strategically woven into the contemporary environment to provide cultural resonance. “The nature of the business is natural oil and gas, so we associated the branding with natural stone while infusing elements that reflect Shenghong’s origins,” MGroup remarks. Upon entering the reception area, visitors are greeted with an impressive view of Marina Bay Sands and the sea through full-height glass windows that frame the space. A striking centrepiece, inspired by a Chinese lantern, dominates the ceiling, incorporating Shenghong’s corporate logo as an integrated lighting feature. This custom piece adds both visual interest and a symbolic tie to the company’s heritage while aligning with Singapore’s iconic architectural landscape. “One of the office’s main features is the Balloso lantern-inspired lighting. Beyond aesthetics, acoustic double-layered glass walls provide essential sound insulation for the meeting rooms while maintaining the visual openness of the space. Functionality meets modernity with automated, motorised access points throughout the office, including face recognition-enabled main doors—a thoughtful touch in response to Covid-19 safety protocols. This seamless access system is both practical and helps maintain the office’s clean and spacious appearance. Additionally, the workspace is equipped with flexible meeting facilities, including two modular meeting rooms that can accommodate ten people each or expand to hold 28 through operable walls. S
torage Studio, a design studio focusing on interior spaces, took on the challenge of transforming the MK Service Training Centre, a 7-storey ageing structure, into a modern and functional learning space. By overcoming structural limitations and integrating MK Group’s signature colours, the team successfully created a dynamic, inviting, and purposeful environment for training and development. The project also saw the integration of RT Acoustic for high-quality acoustic treatments, ensuring both aesthetic appeal and functional excellence. This Q&A explores the challenges faced during the project, the inspiration behind the design choices, and the material selections that helped bring this vision to life. Q: What is your name and responsibility? A: My name is Witchathorn Prasertsuk. I am the founder and managing director of Storage Studio Co., Ltd. I lead the creative direction, oversee all design projects, conduct site inspections, and ensure the selection of appropriate furniture, lighting, and materials to achieve a cohesive design vision. Q: Can you tell us about your company and its services? A: Established in 2005, Storage Studio is a design studio specialising in interior design solutions for diverse sectors, including residential, hospitality, retail, dining, corporate offices, exhibitions, and showrooms. Our approach blends aesthetics with functionality, tailoring each space to reflect the client’s identity and needs. In
many projects, we create custom-designed furniture, and in some cases, we extend our expertise to designing building facades to align seamlessly with the interior concept. Q: What were the challenges of the MK Service Training Centre project? A: The MK Service Training Centre in Bangna is a 7-storey ageing building with several structural constraints that we could not modify. Our primary challenge was working within these limitations while enhancing the facility’s functionality, ensuring a seamless flow for users, and revitalising the space to create a more engaging and conducive environment for learning and development. Additionally, we had to integrate a new design language that aligns with MK Group’s evolving brand identity, all while maintaining practicality and maximising spatial efficiency. Q: What was the design intent and inspiration behind this project? A: Our design was inspired by the concept “A new learning space that brings joy to every family.” To bring this vision to life, we incorporated MK Group’s newly refreshed branding, particularly its five key colours, which define the atmosphere and function of each floor: • 1st & 2nd Floors (Reception & Office Area) – Deep Red, reinforcing professionalism and MK’s corporate identity, creating a welcoming yet formal introduction to the space. • 3rd Floor (Classrooms & Workshops) – Yellow,

representing sincerity and transparency, reflected through natural wood tones and warm hues that evoke openness and creativity. • 4th Floor – A dual-tone approach: Orange (Live Theatre) symbolises energy and entertainment, while Blue (Private Booths) fosters concentration and a sense of tranquillity. • 5th Floor (Break Room) – Green, promoting a relaxed and refreshing atmosphere, encouraging rejuvenation for both trainers and trainees. • 6th Floor (Mini Auditorium) – Yellow, reinforcing sincerity and openness while enhancing a sense of connection and engagement among participants. • 7th Floor (Classrooms & Workshops) – Orange, stimulating an energetic and lively learning experience. By carefully curating this colour-coded approach, we not only reinforced MK’s identity but also leveraged colour psychology to create an intuitive and dynamic spatial experience.
BOTTOM: Acoustic ceiling panels add architectural detail to the training space, creating a dynamic setting for presentations and group activities.
Q: What has been your experience working with Carpets Inter and RT Acoustic? A: We previously collaborated with Carpets Inter on the FN Building Rama 9 project (FN Factory Outlet’s office) and were highly satisfied with their exceptional service, guidance, and quality of materials. For RT Acoustic, our goal was to find acoustic solutions that complemented our design vision, were efficient to install within the project’s timeline, and offered tested and verified sound performance. After assessing several options, we chose RT Acoustic for three key reasons: • A broad spectrum of colour selections that allowed us to maintain our design integrity, • High-density panels that provided superior sound absorption and detailed groove finishing, • An easy installation process, which was crucial for meeting project deadlines. This strategic selection ensured that both aesthetics and functionality were seamlessly integrated into the MK Service Training Centre, ultimately enhancing the overall user experience.
