up front THE LEGEND OF STINGY JACK
Have you ever wondered why jack-o’-lanterns glow on porches every October? The answer lies in an old Irish legend that has travelled across time and oceans.
Long ago, there was a man named Stingy Jack, a mischievous man with a knack for cheating both people and the Devil himself. One popular tale says that Jack invited the Devil for a drink but had no intention of paying the tab. He convinced the Devil to turn into a coin to cover the bill, then pocketed him next to a cross which trapped the Devil so he couldn’t change back. Jack only freed him after the Devil promised not to take his soul.
Years later, when Jack died, Heaven wouldn’t let him in because of his lifetime of dishonest shenanigans, and Hell, honouring the Devils promise, kept its word not to claim him. The Devil sent Jack away with only a burning coal to light his way through eternal darkness. To carry the coal, Jack hollowed out a turnip, placed the coal inside, and began wandering the earth. People called
him “Jack of the Lantern,” which over time became “Jack O’Lantern.”
In Ireland and Scotland, people carved faces into turnips or large beets, placing candles inside to ward off Jack’s ghost and other wandering spirits. Immigrants brought the tradition to North America, where they discovered the pumpkin – a native fruit that was bigger, softer, and easier to carve. Pumpkins became the new face of the jack-o’-lantern.
The carved pumpkin took on a dual role: a festive decoration for autumn celebrations and a symbol meant to protect homes from mischief or wicked spirits during the darker months of the year. Over time, the protective superstition faded for most, but the tradition stuck – turning into an art form, a community activity, and a staple of Halloween.
So, when you carve a pumpkin and set it glowing on your porch, you’re echoing a centuries-old ritual meant to light the night, frighten away trouble, and maybe even keep Stingy Jack from knocking at your door.

mental health CHALLENGES NEW MOTHERS FACE AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM
Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman’s life. Whether a woman is a first-time mother or expecting again, this is a unique time that’s unlike any other in a woman’s life. Once the baby shower gifts have been tucked away and it’s been a few weeks postpartum, that high of new motherhood may be replaced with various challenges, which can be especially unique for new mothers. Life as a new mom certainly can bring about immense modifications to lifestyle, physical appearance and even mood.
Here are some common changes that come from new motherhood and strategies regarding how to handle them.
Breastfeeding struggles
The saying “breast is best” has been around for some time. According to Breastfeeding Mama, breast milk has antibodies that help a baby fight off infection. It also evolves as needed to meet the needs of babies as they grow and develop. Some women are unable to breastfeed successfully, and some moms may feel the stigma of not being able to provide naturally for their children. According to the Office on Women’s Health, low milk supply, sore nipples, engorgement, plugged ducts, inverted or flat nipples, and infections may make breastfeeding difficult for women. Working with a lactation consultant could help new mothers iron out any difficulties they encounter. Choosing to pump breast milk and then using bottles are some additional ways to work around the challenges of breastfeeding.
Physical recovery
Many people talk about how difficult childbirth can be, but there isn’t much shared about the recovery. Those who had vaginal deliveries can expect soreness and injury recovery if tears occurred during delivery. After delivery, a woman will shed the superficial mucous membrane that lined the uterus during pregnancy, says the Mayo Clinic. A discharge made up of this and blood can occur for weeks. Afterpains, which are like contractions, may occur as well. Incontinence and hemorrhoids also may occur after delivering a baby.
Women who have undergone Caesarean sections will have to recover from the surgery. Fatigue, pain at the incision site, and avoidance of heavy lifting is necessary. It can take weeks before a new mother starts to feel like herself. Patience, relying on others for help and making time to focus on oneself can help new moms heal.
Mood changes
According to PostpartumDepression. org, one in 10 women will experience postpartum depression after giving birth (other studies suggest one in seven women develop postpartum depression). The condition generally lasts between three and six months.
Younger mothers under age 25 may be more vulnerable to postpartum depression.
Even if full-blown postpartum depression does not occur, hormonal changes post-delivery can cause mood swings that are similar to those experienced during pregnancy. Feeling overwhelmed,
short-tempered, resentment, and similar emotions can occur. Talking to others or even a professional therapist can assist new moms. In the event of severe symptoms, a doctor may suggest a short course of antidepressants or anti-anxiety medication.
Changes are to be expected when baby arrives. Moms can do their best to cope with the ups and downs.

spooky haunts
SOME OF THE WORLD’S BEAUTIFUL, YET HAUNTED PLACES
People often love to explore the uncanny and unexplained as Halloween draws near. One way to do so is to visit some of the purportedly haunted places around the world that also happen to be spectacularly beautiful. Not only is this a great way to get in some travel time, it also can elicit thrills, as one never knows what to expect when visiting the following locales.
Casa Loma, Toronto, Canada
This gothic revival castle was completed in 1914. It is built with secret passageways and hidden storage areas. Legend has it that ghosts have been spotted on the property for years. The estate is transformed into a haunted house for Halloween each year.
Winchester Mystery House, San Jose, California
When Winchester Rifles heiress Sarah Winchester lost her husband and infant daughter, a psychic medium told her it was payback by the spirits of all the people harmed by Winchester rifles. She was told to build a house large enough to accommodate all the angry spirits. The Winchester Mystery House has 160 rooms, secret passageways, upside-down columns, and staircases to nowhere to confuse spirits. Visitors have experienced all sorts of unexplained phenomena within the walls of the house.
Raynham Hall, Norfolk, England
Within this English hall, a mysterious “Brown Lady,” rumoured to be Lady Dorothy Walpole, supposedly roams. She was captured on film in the December 1936 edition of Country Life.
Driskill Hotel, Austin, Texas
This historic landmark was opened in 1886 by cattle baron Jesse Driskill. It has a well-known history of paranormal activity following the deaths of guests, which include two honeymooning women who took their own lives in the same room 20 years apart.
Larnach Castle, Dunedin, New Zealand
The lone castle in New Zealand is a beautiful building set amid misty gardens. It is rumoured that the castle’s builder, a politician named William Larnach, witnessed the death of his daughter and two wives in the house before taking his own life on the property. Larnach’s ghost supposedly watches over the castle and is responsible for paranormal events.
Poveglia, Venice, Italy
The island of Poveglia is a short ride from Venice, and used to be a quarantine zone for people suffering from the plague. The island later housed a psychiatric hospital. Many people attest to the island being a prime spot for paranormal activity.
One if by Land, Two if by Sea, New York City
Located in the West Village neighborhood of Manhattan, this restaurant once was the carriage house of Aaron Burr. The eatery supposedly is haunted by upwards of 20 ghosts, including Burr and his daughter, Theodosia.
Port Arthur, Australia
Port Arthur is filled with reports of paranormal spectacles. The spot originally was a penal colony in the 19th century where prisoners endured mandatory church services
and solitary confinement to correct poor behavior.
Rose Hall, Montego Bay, Jamaica
Rose Hall once was the residence of plantation owner John Palmer and his English-born wife, Annie. She poisoned him to take control of the plantation and fortune. Annie was known as The White Witch by slaves on the property because
she practiced voodoo and tortured workers – never mind killing her second and third husbands as well. It is said The White Witch, who is encased in a stone tomb on the property, still roams the grounds as a spirit and terrorizes guests. Haunted locales dot the global landscape. Many are beautiful to behold, even while they put a scare in visitors.

Have you ever walked into a pharmacy and wondered if every medicine on the shelves fits your unique needs? In many ways, they can’t; that’s where compounding pharmacies come in.
Before mass-produced medications, pharmacists customized every prescription to suit individual needs – a practice making a comeback in modern healthcare. According to the Association of Compounding Pharmacists of Canada, the practice of compounding dates back to a time when nearly all prescriptions were customized. Although massproduced medications became the norm in the mid-20th century, advancements in technology and research have reignited interest in compounding. Pharmacists can create personalized medications tailored to meet individual needs, such as adjusting strength and flavour, altering dosage forms, or excluding allergens.
“Imagine your child needs a medication, but the pill is too big to swallow,” says Youssef Habib, pharmacist and owner of Lawrence Park Pharmacy in Toronto. “Or maybe they’re put off by the taste. What do
health COMPOUND PHARMACY
WORDS BY MARYLENE VESTERGOM
you do? Compounding pharmacies can create medications tailored specifically for your family’s unique needs.”
That’s one of the biggest differences between a pharmacy that offers compounding solutions and a traditional pharmacy that dispenses mass-produced drugs.
Compounding pharmacies tailor medications to patient’s unique requirements. Medications are always prescribed by your doctor, but a compound pharmacy can work with you/your physician to personalize it, for instance, if your child is unable to swallow pills, or doesn’t like the taste of the medication.
As Habib points out, “Our pharmacy has been able to support parents with finding suitable and affordable medication solutions for their children. Most commonly, we prepare compounds for children diagnosed with various mental health conditions since traditional manufactured drugs are tailored for adults.”
Is it more expensive, and if so – why?
The price of compounded medications will vary depending on the ingredients, quantity, complexity, equipment required, and time involved in creating them.
Are insurance plans covered? This varies by plan, and sometimes, patients may have to contact their plan administrator for approval.
Are there any misconceptions about compound pharmacies?
A common myth Habib points out is that compounded medications are unsafe. “In reality, when prepared
by trained professionals following stringent guidelines, compounded medications are as safe as commercially available drugs.”
What inspired you to open a compound pharmacy, and what keeps you passionate about your work?
“I recognized the demand for personalized medicine is growing. Research supports the effectiveness of custom-made medications tailored to individual conditions and genetic profiles. Particularly in Toronto, medical practitioners are beginning to prescribe more customized medications to support their patients.”
Why might a parent or caregiver choose compounded medication over commercially available options?
• Create custom dosages/ strengths or dosages that are not
typically available for children or infants
• Obtain flavoured medications
• Avoid components of pharmaceutical medications to which patients may be allergic or sensitive.
Last word
Many compound pharmacies, like Lawrence Park Pharmacy (lprx.ca) offer compounding expertise along with a full-service pharmacy. This ability to develop custom solutions truly sets compound pharmacies apart. From personalized pain management for older adults to tailored medications for children, they ensure that individuals receive treatments uniquely suited to their needs. By offering such versatility and personalization, compound pharmacies deliver the best of both worlds – expert care, traditional medications and innovative solutions.

5 WAYS TO ENSURE A GREATER WORK-FAMILY BALANCE
Individuals must juggle many different responsibilities on a daily basis. Those with full- or part-time jobs, children, spouses or partners, or aging family members that require assistance, will often find they are pulled in different directions. In many cases, work takes priority over family time because people rely on their jobs for the income that funds their lifestyles. Rather than jeopardizing that income, certain individuals will make time concessions that favour employment over personal relationships and family time.
Recent data indicates that many people are trapped in unhealthy work-life balances and can’t find the time to unwind and enjoy themselves. Learning to balance work and life better may come from following these tips.
Find more time
While there’s no way to add extra hours to the day, you can add extra hours to your schedule. One way to do so is to wake up earlier or stay up later than the household. Some people prefer the quiet time to get things done while others are asleep. If
you can afford to shave an hour from your sleeping schedule (provided you already are getting enough), this approach can make a significant difference.
Limit distractions as much as possible
Distractions pull attention away from tasks and that can make it harder to complete jobs on time. Schedule tasks that require your utmost concentration when others are not
around. Perhaps this means coming into the office during off-peak hours or waiting until a spouse or the kids go to their respective places of work or school before you start on things that require greater concentration.
Figure out your home priorities
Schedule your home priorities just as you would work meetings and other responsibilities. While you may not be able to attend every sports practice or game, make it a point to get to as
many events as possible. Put it in the calendar or planner as a must-do.
Maximize your PTO
Chances are you are entitled to a certain number of days off. Do not squander the opportunity to use these days. It will not make you a hero if you give up on time off. Map out priorities for the next couple of months and see where your time away from work will be needed. Then utilize PTO for these events as well as vacations.
End work at a certain time
There is a saying that “work expands to fill the time allotted.” It’s easy to let work infiltrate home time especially for those who are remote workers.
Set a distinct end time for the job and reinforce it by turning off your computer or other devices, or physically lock the door to your office. Schedule tasks directly after work that are important to you, so you won’t be tempted to continue working.
Finding work-life balance can take time and require breaking established habits, but it is one way to reduce stress and feel more personally satisfied.

LITTLE GHOULS AND GOBLINS CELEBRATE THE SEASON AT CAMP SPOOKY
Canada’s Wonderland knows how to throw a festive bash. Camp Spooky, a family-friendly daytime event, runs every weekend from Sept. 27 to Nov. 2, and is the perfect Halloweenthemed outing for little ones, filled with tiny terrors and more fun than you can shake a witch’s broom at. Halloween is all about the goodies, right? So, let’s get the important part out of the way early: yes, there is candy, and plenty of it. Kids can shell out at various stations on the Trick-orTreat Trail, filling pails and bags with sweet loot. Be sure to come dressed in full costume to enjoy the full spirit of the season and then show off your style at Canada’s Wonderland’s favourite Halloween event, The Peanuts Costume Contest.
The various members of the Peanuts Gang dress in costume, as well as greet children and pose for photos. Children can also meet a host of spooky characters, like a vampire, a wicked witch, a pirate, a ghost, and a spell-casting wizard.
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
Children can experience gentle chills as they venture into Spirit Manor – a family-friendly haunted house –or while exploring the Cornstalkers Maze.
Camp Spooky is enlivened by all kinds of live music, including performances by the Pumpkin Patches, Groovy Gourds who entertain with a variety of Halloween favourites and the Spectral Sisters, ghostly gals who bring the sounds of New Orleans to Canada’s Wonderland.
Other live entertainment includes the side-splitting hijinks of Doo Doo the Clown and Snoopy’s Tricks and Treats Adventure, a fun and interactive story time with the iconic dog.
The witches and warlocks at Camp Spooky conjure up all manner of magical autumn-themed foods and drinks at various locations around the park. My daughter went full-on vampire for a moment and chose the delicious Vile of Blood drink. Parents aren’t overlooked; they can enjoy brews and potions of an adult variety.
Oh, and there’s also pumpkin decorating. Pick a plump gourd, bring it to life, and take it home with you.
Best of all, there is no need to limit oneself to seasonal offerings – jump aboard any of the park’s world class rides for thrills of another kind any time you choose.
There is no additional charge for Camp Spooky; everything the event offers is included with Park Admission.
Canada’s Wonderland gives children the frightfully fun Halloween event they deserve with Camp Spooky. Throw on a costume, grab a loot bag and get in the festive spirit.
Education is vital for young people to reach their full potential and enjoy success in adulthood. Students’ academic journeys begin as early as preschool and continue for decades. While students ultimately earn degrees or professional certifications in their own names, their academic journeys are often a team effort that includes the support of their parents. Parental involvement in school can pay significant dividends for students. In 2019, the American Psychological Association reviewed more than 400 studies examining parental involvement in school. That review found that students whose parents were involved in their children’s schooling showed greater academic achievement, school engagement and motivation compared to youngsters with parents who were not involved. That payoff compels millions of parents to get involved in their children’s schooling, and the following tips are a handful of ways to do just that.
Start
the year off right
Parental involvement in children’s schooling can begin before a new school year gets under way. Orientation events designed to acclimate students to new schools can help calm youngsters’ nerves when they’re beginning kindergarten, elementary school, middle school, or high school. Transferring to a new school due to a family relocation or another variable can be difficult for students, and parents can make that transition a little easier by attending orientation events before the first day of classes. Back-to-school nights held a week or two into the school year also present a great chance for parents to start the year off right.
Actively communicate with children’s teachers
Parents can contact teachers at the start of a new school year to identify the best way to communicate. Some schools utilize apps to facilitate communication with parents. Some teachers may prefer communicating via email, phone calls or even text messages. Parents should not hesitate or be afraid to reach out to teachers about their children’s needs.
Do your part at home, too
Parental involvement in children’s education can extend to the home as well. Parents can emphasize the importance of education in conversations with their children and offer to help with homework
when children seem to need some assistance. Parents also can ask about assignments and tests, enthusiastically engage in projects designed to involve students’ families, and provide a stable, distraction-free home environment where kids can focus on their schoolwork.
Volunteer
with parental organizations
Parent teacher associations/ organizations are always in need of members to help to organize special events and volunteer at school functions. Parents can join groups such as a PTA or PTO to get more involved in campus life. If joining such groups is not possible, parents can let it be known that they would like to
volunteer for events throughout the school year.
Ask children about their day
One of the simplest ways parents can be more involved in children’s schooling is to ask them about their day when they arrive home. Ask children what they did in class, and which parts of their day they found most, or even least, enjoyable. When parents express an interest in what kids are doing at school, that may compel kids to be more interested in their coursework. Children are the ultimate beneficiaries when parents get involved in their youngsters’ education, and there’s no shortage of ways for moms and dads to engage at school.

We pride ourselves on being what social scientists call a “third place”– a place where lifetime friendships are made, confidence is created, and creativity is nurtured. Founded in 1986 by the mother-and-daughter team of Lynda Johnson and Jane Davis-Munro, the studio has expanded from its original storefront location to the current studio near Coxwell and Danforth as one of East Toronto’s largest dance schools.
