The idea of the “June bride” is more than a seasonal choice – it’s a tradition rich in history, symbolism, and romance that has lasted for centuries. June has long been known as the month for weddings, captured in the saying, “Marry in June, you’re sure to be a bride.”
This time of year, is steeped in tradition, rooted in ancient Roman festivals honouring Juno, the goddess of marriage. These festivities symbolized the union of couples during a season of warmth, fertility, and new beginnings.
But it’s not just about myth; there’s something beautiful about June itself. It marks the transition into summer (my favourite season) when the days are long, flowers burst into bloom, and the world feels full of potential. Historically, this timing also aligned with practical life patterns – June weddings often fell during favourable weather and symbolized a fresh start, both emotionally and seasonally. Today, as couples rethink when and how they wed, June’s charm remains. It’s not just about tradition – it’s a feeling. A June wedding embodies optimism, new beginnings, and quiet hope that love, like the season, will flourish. “June bride” is less about a date, and more about sentiment. It means a moment full of light and
possibility – a timeless image of love stepping into its next chapter.
And perhaps what makes June even more meaningful is what surrounds it. Father’s Day, nestled within this same month, serves as a reminder of the first love many brides experience. Through the season runs a quiet, emotional thread – where weddings and family intersect. A father’s presence – whether walking down the aisle, offering a toast, or simply standing nearby – adds another layer of meaning to the moment. In this way, the June bride embodies not only a symbol of new beginnings, but also the enduring legacy of love and support that guides her into this new chapter.
Today, while couples are redefining when and how they celebrate their weddings, June is no longer the only coveted month. Many couples are choosing dates that hold personal meaning – from anniversaries to seasons that reflect their style and story. An October wedding, for example, offers rich fall colours, crisp air, and a cosy, romantic atmosphere that feels just as intentional and memorable with the bride and groom’s own twist, making it more meaningful and truly unforgettable.

The arrival of summer is a momentous day for children. Summer means school is closed and weeks of rest, recreation and fun in the sun are on the schedule.
Although summer may start off with a bang, it may not be too long before kids are uttering the dreaded, “I’m bored,” leaving parents and caregivers looking for ways to keep children occupied. Having a list of activities at the ready can help families stay active and engaged during the dog days of summer.
Those lucky enough to have a backyard pool have a great source of entertainment right at home. Swimming alone can grow monotonous for kids, so work with friends’ parents to devise a schedule to have the kids alternate whose house they visit for swimming sessions. Standard games like water volleyball or diving retrieval games can add some fun, but many times kids are happy to splash and float with friends. Stock a cooler with water, juice and healthy snacks so kids can just hop out of the water and grab a refreshment, rather than leaving a water-logged trail into the kitchen. Those who do not have a pool can consider visiting a town or city pool or splash pad, where everyone can mingle with neighbours.

The dog days of summer tend to be humid, hot and sometimes uncomfortable.
Scheduling activities for later in the day makes the most of weather that has cooled off a bit.

Purchase or borrow a projector that hooks up to a computer or tablet and set up a screen in the yard. Stream a family-friendly movie and prepare ready-made bags of popcorn or cotton candy for the show.
Favourite backyard games can be enhanced with the use of a little water. For example, instead of tossing bean bags for cornhole, fill up water balloons. Kids who are playing tag or games like capture the flag may have to run through a garden sprinkler to get into their opponent’s territory. Kids can put their engineering skills to use by building an obstacle course of hurdles and the like from tires or pool noodles. Poke holes into one pool noodle and feed a garden hose into the end to create a water hazard.
Whether at a beach, park, or even walking the neighbourhood, families can have a list of objects that must be found. The first child to find all the items on the list gets a prize, such as choosing which ice cream shop to visit. Dance in the rain
Summertime is known for the sudden arrival of storms. When a downpour occurs, have the family head into the garage with the door open to catch the amazing sights of Mother Nature. Take turns briefly running out into the deluge to dance and splash in the rain. Retreat to the indoors when thunder and lightning are close by. Families have plenty of ways to fill the dog days (and nights) of summer with entertaining games and other activities.

Since the early 2000s, social media has become a normalized part of our personal, educational and professional lives. While there are many benefits to using these online platforms, there are also several dangers. As there is little to no regulations in place, social media companies have designed platforms that target and manipulate users and encourages compulsive use.
Children and adolescents are especially vulnerable to this manipulative design. Their brains are still developing how they receive and process information, which differs from how an adult brain does. These targeted practices on youth affect their mental health and can lead to depression, anxiety and decreased feelings of self-worth. These platforms also expose children to harmful content, affect their social interactions, how they learn, and can lead to destructive behaviour including self-harm.
While the blame is often placed on teachers and parents for their children’s social media usage and its adverse effects, the truth is, the problem is far more complex than that. The system needs to be changed and to make that happen, it requires a multifaceted approach by several groups including governments, professionals, educators and families.
Neinstein LLP, a Toronto-based law firm that specializes in civil litigation, is taking the legal lead in pushing for accountability and change. In March 2024, the firm issued the first set of claims against the three biggest social media platforms, TikTok, Meta and Snapchat. In their claims, they allege
WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY

that these companies are deceptively marketing to adolescents and are creating platforms that intentionally promote compulsive and addictive behaviours. These sites, through their manipulative tactics, have adversely disrupted children’s mental wellbeing, learning and classroom time. As a result, schools are forced to spend more money on mental health supports which is putting a greater strain on the education system.
The purpose of this litigation isn’t just about compensation, according to Sonia Nijjar, a partner at Neinstein LLP, who is representing the Ontario school boards. She wants social media companies to be held accountable and ensure their platforms are safer to use, especially for our youth. “This is about change
and we’re not going to have change without regulation,” stated Nijjar. Neinstein LLP currently represents 22 of Ontario’s 72 school boards. This accounts for about 65 per cent of all students in Ontario.
Other provinces are also starting to take actions that will hold the social media tech companies accountable for their products. Different school divisions in other provinces and territories are also exploring legal options. In April 2026, the Manitoba government introduced a provincial bill to protect children from online social media harms.
The Government of Canada introduced Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act in February 2024. It aimed to protect people, especially children from harmful online content like
sexual exploitation, online bullying and hate speech. However, the bill never passed legislation and died on the Order Paper in 2025. The federal government has recently introduced a social media ban for anyone under 16 years of age and are expected to announce a revised bill in the fall.
While Nijjar and her colleagues at Neinstein LLP are battling the social media companies in the courts and federal and provincial governments are developing laws to protect children from harmful online content, parents and teachers also have a vital role in advocacy for safer online usage. Children and teenagers must be part of the conversation, so it’s crucial that parents and educators talk to children openly and honestly about safe social media usage.

WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
Over the course of my career as a travel writer, I’ve had the good fortune to become intimately familiar with Muskoka’s resorts and to write numerous articles highlighting their appeals. That made it a particular thrill for me to pen my latest book, Timeless Hospitality: Historic Resorts of Muskoka (Dundurn Press).
Tourism is one of Muskoka’s defining industries, with 3.2 million visitors annually. Many stay at a resort, without realizing that they are carrying on a tradition dating back more than 150 years.
When Muskoka was originally opened to settlement in the 1860s, a flood of land hungry people swept into the region, eager to transform forest into farm. But the promise that arable soil lay under the roots of the towering trees was a broken one. Most settlers struggled. Muskoka simply wasn’t suitable for agriculture.
Farmers would open their doors to anglers and hunters from southern Ontario and the United States, offering room and board in exchange for payment. These boarders would

return home, singing the praises of Muskoka’s splendor. Soon enough, sportsmen would request to bring their families and the demand soared. Property owners realized they could make far more money hosting tourists than they ever could by tilling the soil and began to build true resorts on their lakeside farms. Muskoka, as a tourist destination, was born.
Perhaps as many as one hundred summer resorts, inns, and boarding
houses might have been in operation at any one time.
Most of these properties have long since vanished, and some have been almost completely forgotten. A handful of these historic resorts still exist, much altered but nonetheless carrying on a proud legacy of hospitality. These resorts ensure that Muskoka remains at the forefront of any list of Canada’s vacation destinations.
Muskoka’s resorts aren’t just places to stay. They are cultural symbols that continue to define what people imagine when they think of ‘cottage country’.
Timeless Hospitality seeks to preserve the history, the personality, and the special stories of a selection of Muskoka’s resorts. Some names you’ll be familiar with. Deerhurst Resort remains iconic even after more than 125 years, and JW Marriott
The Rosseau Muskoka Resort has cultivated a reputation for opulence as the successor of the family-run Paignton House. Others are smaller, less famed, more intimate - Sherwood Inn and PK Lodge come to mind. And

you’ll be introduced to others that are long gone, surviving only in memories and leaf-eared photographs.
On a personal level, I can unreservedly say that visits to Muskoka’s resorts have shaped my young daughter – broadening her horizons, shaping her perspectives, offering entertainment, yes, but also values and insight. Staff become friends. Shared memories bind our family together.
Muskoka’s resorts aren’t just buildings. They never have been. They’re memory makers and memory keepers.
I hope Timeless Hospitality: Muskoka’s Historic Resorts does the same.

Physical activity is an important component of a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages. Too often children aren’t spending enough time being physically active, and they could pay a hefty price for that as kids and adults.
The digital age has altered childhood for millions of youngsters. Whereas kids once spent much of their free time engaging in unstructured play, typically doing so outdoors, modern kids now live more sedentary lives indoors. Low energy sitting or reclining while looking at a phone or playing video games means children are spending more time than ever in inactive states, which can lead to long-term, negative health consequences. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only about 24 per cent
INACTIVITY IS DIRECTLY TIED TO THE GLOBAL RISE IN CHILDHOOD OBESITY.

of children between the ages of six and 17 participate in 60 minutes of physical activity each day. The World Health Organization reports that more than 80 per cent of the world’s school-aged adolescent population is insufficiently physically active. Here’s a look at how this lack of exercise is affecting children.
Increased childhood obesity:
Inactivity is directly tied to the global rise in childhood obesity, as sedentary behaviour reduces
metabolic rates and alters how the body processes fats and sugars, says the WHO.
Reduction in cardiovascular fitness:
Without regular exertion, the lungs and heart will not develop the same efficiency as they would if kids were physically active. According to data published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, sedentary childhood habits can
contribute to arterial stiffness, which is a precursor to heart disease.
Potential for weaker bone structures:
Bone density is built through weightbearing exercises like jumping and running. Sedentary children run the risk of entering adulthood with weaker bones, potentially leading to orthopedic issues and higher rates of fractures.
Adverse psychological effects:
Physical activity releases feel-good chemicals in the body like endorphins and dopamine. Highly sedentary children may be at an elevated risk for anxiety and depression because they are not reaping the benefit of these natural mood boosters.

Decreased cognitive function:
Cognitive function could be impacted by low physical movement, which decreases blood flow to the brain, says the National Institutes of Health. Children can benefit from being active, as it offers protective benefits against various health ailments that can manifest during childhood and even later in life.

Vacation often serves as a welldeserved break from the hustle and bustle of daily life. When relaxing and recharging away from home, the last thing vacationers want to think about is the safety of their homes and everything inside them. However, the National Council for Home Safety and Security and Statistics Canada estimate that more than two million burglaries occur in the United States and Canada every year. That underscores the importance of always protecting your home, including when you’re not there.
Create the impression that someone is home
Just because you’re heading off for parts unknown doesn’t mean you can’t create the impression that life is carrying on as usual within the walls of your home. Smart home technology now enables homeowners to set timers on lights and even home

electronics like televisions and radios. Homeowners also can ask neighbours to pick up their mail or halt delivery until they return from their trips. Nothing says “no
one’s home” as definitively as an overflowing mailbox.
Keep quiet on social media
A Credit Sesame survey of former burglars in the United Kingdom found that 78 per cent acknowledged monitoring social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter as they try to find homes to burglarize. Individuals about to go on vacation should avoid sharing that on social media.
Stay silent while you’re away as well
Social media silence should be continued while you’re on vacation as well. No matter how tempting it may be to share photos from an exotic location, such posts could catch the attention of all the wrong people. A recent report from
AWAY
JUST BECAUSE YOU’RE HEADING OFF FOR PARTS UNKNOWN DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN’T CREATE THE IMPRESSION THAT LIFE IS CARRYING ON AS USUAL WITHIN THE WALLS OF YOUR HOME.

MetLife indicated that 35 per cent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 check in from their locations via social media. That can alert criminals that no one is manning the fort back home.
Switch from a traditional lock and key to a lockbox
Individuals who travel frequently can take a page from the realtor notebook and switch from a traditional lock and key lock system to a lockbox. Lockboxes require that a code is entered before a box containing a key can be unlocked. Homeowners who want this added measure of protection don’t even need to put a key inside the lockbox, which typically covers a lock, making it extremely difficult for potential thieves to pick the lock.
Before leaving for vacation, individuals can implement various strategies and safety measures to protect their homes and their belongings while they’re away.
