EDITOR’S NOTE

up front

SEPTEMBER CAME IN A FLASH! Does anyone else feel like summer gets shorter every year? When my kids were school-aged, summer break seemed to last forever. With four kids, those two months could feel like an eternity! There were definitely days when I was counting down to September, dreaming of school routines, quiet mornings and a little peace and quiet. Now that my four kids are all grown up, summer seems to fly by in the blink of an eye, and before I know it, September is here. My back-to-school days look a little different now, but oh, do I remember the chaos! Loading four kids into the truck was less of a morning routine and more like a scene from a PG-13 movie. I’d be standing at the door calling, “Let’s go! We’re late!” One by one, they’d march out like little soldiers toward what I affectionately called the “family room on wheels”. And just as the LAST child climbed in… “OMG! I forgot something!” Back into the house they’d go. At that point, I was somewhere between a coffee percolator and a pressure cooker waiting to pop. And, of course, that was precisely when my neighbour, the late Mark Dailey from CityNews, would be walking his dog. He’d stop, watch the morning performance and chuckle.

One morning, I looked at him and said, “Please don’t let me see this on the 11 o’clock news!” He laughed and told me his morning walks had become part of his daily entertainment. Thankfully, those chaotic mornings are now some of my favourite memories. The yelling, forgotten homework, missing shoes and mad dashes out the door were exhausting – but they were also the little moments that made family life memorable. These days, I have a two-year-old grandson, so we’re not quite ready for the full back-to-school circus. We’re in what I call “practice mode”, with morning programs, little backpacks and the ongoing lesson that leaving the house requires shoes – and considerably more time than you think! The best part? His mom – my daughter – is doing the real work. I get to watch, encourage and enjoy my grandson while quietly sipping my tea. To all the parents heading into another school year: pack the lunches, find the shoes, take a deep breath and leave time for the inevitable, “I forgot something!” And to all the grandparents out there – enjoy the view. We’ve done our time. Happy September! May your coffee be strong and your mornings be only mildly chaotic. Mary Racioppo Editor-In-Chief, City Parent

WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT SMARTPHONE USE IN SCHOOL Ask any Baby Boomer, Generation Xer or even early Millennial if they expected to one day always have a portable, handheld computer at the ready, and they would almost certainly say, “No.” Although the first mobile phone was invented by Motorola engineer Martin Cooper in 1973, it would be decades before the initial incarnations of the modern smartphone were used by the masses. The Pew Research Center reports that 98 per cent of Americans now own a cellphone of some kind. That figure reflects an increase of 35 per cent over the Center’s first smartphone ownership survey in 2011. The Canadian Telecommunications Association says 90 to 95 per cent of the Canadian population uses a smartphone. What’s more, many of these smartphones are synced to equally impressive smartwatches, ensuring that people are never

THE CENTER FOR AMERICAN PROGRESS (CAP) REPORTS THAT NEARLY 95 PER CENT OF TWEENS BETWEEN THE AGES OF 13 AND 17 HAVE ACCESS TO A SMARTPHONE, UP FROM 73 PER CENT ONLY 10 YEARS AGO. 10 CITY PARENT | September 2026

without access to the vast array of apps that are such a big part of modern life. While this connectivity can be beneficial in many instances, smartphones have the potential to disrupt students in school settings. Many school leaders have raised concerns in recent years about student smartphone use in schools. Smartphones have become ubiquitous among tweens and teens since the first iPhone debuted in 2007. The Center for American Progress (CAP) reports that nearly 95 per cent of tweens between the ages of 13 and 17 have access to a smartphone, up from 73 per cent only 10 years ago. District policies regulating cell phone use in K through 12 schools have surged recently and made smartphone use in schools a contentious topic. Various studies indicate that excessive time spent on cellphones by children negatively impacts academic performance. Paragon Health Institute reports cellphone

bans can improve academic achievement, and there may be some indications that limiting cellphones in school can reduce behavioural problems. Here is a deep look at how smartphones can affect students, courtesy of CAP. • Cellphone use might negatively affect long-term learning retention. • Teens check their phones hundreds of times a day, with many doing so during school hours. This can adversely affect their ability to concentrate. • The United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy issued an advisory about the impact of social media use on children and adolescents, calling for warning labels on social media apps. Many children access social media through their phones. Social media is designed to maximize user engagement, and many kids are becoming addicted to going on social media as a result of targeted content.

• Cellphone use makes it easier to cheat on tests. The National Education Association indicates approximately 35 per cent of high school students admit to using mobile devices to cheat. Phones provide instant, discreet access to information that otherwise would be difficult to obtain. • Phone cameras provide an unencumbered way to invade other students’ privacy. Phones can record video or take photos of students in intimate locations or without their knowledge. Policies regarding cellphone use in schools remain a hot topic. While some school districts have implemented various usage policies, enforcement remains a grey area and some parents have even raised concerns that smartphone bans are a security risk. More research is needed to determine if and how cellphone usage impacts students while in school. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

PARENT STUFF

mompreneur JOEYBAND BORN FROM A MOTHER’S EXPERIENCE, DESIGNED TO STRENGTHEN THE PARENT-CHILD BOND The first few moments and days after a baby’s birth are filled with emotion, connection, and discovery. Skin-to-skin contact has long been studied as one of the most important ways parents can bond with their newborns, offering benefits that extend far beyond those early cuddles. Research shows that skin-to-skin care can help regulate a baby’s temperature, heart rate, and breathing, while also supporting breastfeeding success, reducing stress, and strengthening the parentchild bond.

Joeyband™ was created to help families experience these benefits securely and confidently, for an extended period. Designed and manufactured in Toronto, Joeyband™ is an internationally patented skinto-skin support device that helps keep newborns positioned against a caregiver’s chest during skin-to-skin cityparent.com

care. The innovative design provides added support while allowing parents and caregivers to remain hands-free, creating a comfortable and reassuring experience for both caregiver and baby. Today, Joeyband™ is trusted by hundreds of hospitals across North America and around the world, and has supported more than 100,000 families. More than just a baby product, Joeyband™ is a tool that encourages connection, confidence, and peace of mind during one of life’s most important transitions. About the inventor Like many great innovations, Joeyband™ was born from a personal experience. Inventor Hayley Mullins was enjoying skin-to-skin time with her newborn daughter when every parent’s worst fear became a reality – her baby had the startle reflex and slipped from her chest. Although her daughter was not seriously injured, the experience left Mullins shaken. Determined to find a safer way to practice skin-to-skin care, she began searching for a product that could more easily provide support and security during those precious bonding moments. When she discovered that no such product existed, Mullins decided to create one herself. What began as a solution for her own family quickly evolved into a mission to help others. Drawing on her experience, Mullins developed

the first Joeyband™ prototype and later partnered with co-founders Sarah-Almaza Cox and Ashley Wade to bring the product to market. After being in the market for over a decade, Mullins’ vision is becoming a reality for all families with a newborn (or newborns from multiple births), including those who are members of the adaptive and/or disabled patient community. Balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship was no easy feat. Like many mompreneurs, Mullins navigated sleepless nights, family responsibilities, and the challenges of building a business from the ground up. Yet her passion for improving postpartum care and supporting families remained the driving force behind the brand’s success. Today, Joeyband™ continues to change the standard for newborn and maternal health, while advocating for the importance of early bonding, helping families create

meaningful connections from the very beginning. Where to buy Joeyband™ products are available directly through the official Joeyband™ website at joeyband.com, where parents can learn more about the benefits of skin-to-skin care and explore the full collection of products designed to support their parenting journey.

HARVEST A DAY OF FALL FUN AT ROUNDS RANCH WORDS BY ANDREW HIND Fall may signal cooling weather and fading gardens, but it’s also a season of dazzling tree colours, crisp air that begs to be inhaled deeply, and plump pumpkins growing in fields. If you have little ones, there are few places better to spend an autumn day than Rounds Ranch in Elmvale. Rounds Ranch began twentyfive years ago when Ken and Geri Rounds purchased a 125-acre farm in December 2001. The couple were inspired by the idea of creating a family farm experience where guests could experience a sampling of farm life. Since then, thanks to their own imagination, hard work and growing interest in agritourism, Rounds Ranch has blossomed into a family favourite attraction in Simcoe County. Attractions include a petting zoo, tractor rides, corn maze (in season, naturally), pony rides, ziplines, playground, a recreated Wild West town to explore, and more – enough to keep young children entertained. 14 CITY PARENT | September 2026

While every season has its own unique charm on the farm (see what I did there?), autumn is arguably the best time to visit. Sunflowers shine bright at Rounds Ranch in August, but when you read this, there is still a bit of time to enjoy a pick-your-own (PYO) sunflower experience and the last dash of summer. You hop aboard a wagon and will be taken by tractor to the ten-

acre sunflower field. There, you’ll be dropped off to explore over a mile of winding trails through a field of yellows and golds showcasing seventy stunning varieties of blooms. Unique props are scattered throughout the field, creating picture-perfect backdrops for your photographic memories. Choose your favourite sunflower to take home – snippers, bags, and water are provided in the field tent. For an even more vibrant bouquet, you can purchase a Blooming Bucket ($24.99) and fill it to the brim with sunflowers and fresh-cut flowers. Only at Rounds Ranch can you celebrate Easter in September with their Better Late Than Never Easter Egg Hunt (Sept. 5-7). Gathering colorful eggs as the first hints of reds and yellows appear on trees is quirky and just plain fun. Meet the Easter Bunny amidst the sunflower field, go in search of the elusive ‘Golden Egg’, and race to gather candy shot into the sky by the Candy Blaster. Every child

gets to take home a bag of treats. Best of all, no muddy boots. Note that you can combine the pick-your-own sunflower experience mentioned above with Easter Egg Hunt. Fall kicks off in full fashion starting Sept. 18. Avoid the crowds but still enjoy the changing season on the farm during Fall Fun Fridays, which run through to the end of October. Weekends as of Sept. 19 come alive with excitement due to Pumpkin Mania, which embraces gourds like few others. No fall day at Rounds is complete until you’ve picked your own pumpkin.

THE EFFECTS OF UNTREATED ADHD Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, often referred to as “ADHD,” is more common than people may realize. According to the organization Children and Adults with AttentionDeficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD), a 2015 meta-analysis of 175 studies worldwide estimated that roughly 129 million children had ADHD at the time of the study. That’s nearly twice the population of the entire United Kingdom and more than three times the population of Canada. Children aren’t the only people with ADHD, which can continue into and throughout adulthood if left untreated. Untreated ADHD can have immediate consequences on children, as the American Psychiatric Association notes that the condition can make it difficult for

performance, potentially affecting their long-term futures as a result. Untreated ADHD can produce some unpleasant and surprising consequences outside of the classroom as well.

Untreated ADHD and driving Driving is a skill that requires drivers to be attentive and aware of their surroundings at all times. A 2009 study published in the Journal of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry found that the stimulants used to treat ADHD can make people with the condition better drivers. Such medications were found to reduce inattention, distractibility and impulsiveness, each of which is a known characteristic of ADHD. Without such treatment, individuals with ADHD could be putting themselves, their passengers, fellow drivers, and pedestrians at risk each time they get behind the wheel. Untreated ADHD and education It’s no secret that the earning potential of college graduates is significantly greater than that of individuals whose highest level of education is high school. A 2006 study published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry found that adults who self-reported ADHD were far less likely to have graduated college than those who reported that they had been diagnosed with ADHD (19 per cent compared to 26 per cent). ADHD is a common condition across the globe. Seeking treatment for ADHD could have a profound and positive effect on individuals throughout their lives. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

WHAT STUDENTS CAN DO TO SHARPEN THEIR MATH SKILLS No two students are the same. What makes for a challenging course for one student may be a breeze for another, and vice versa. Successful students learns to navigate the obstacles of their most challenging subjects, but no one makes that journey alone. Educators, tutors, parents, and even fellow students can make up a support network that plays a pivotal role in helping students understand challenging subjects. As effective as a strong support network is, students also should recognize that they are their own advocates as well. Such recognition can ensure students get the help they need with challenging subjects, including math. Math has garnered increased attention in academic settings throughout the twenty-first century, when grade schools, middle schools, high schools, and colleges have touted the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). A greater emphasis on mathematics is understandable, but students struggling in math may feel a little lost. While math can easily

frustrate, these approaches can help students sharpen their skills in this important subject. Practice Students might not feel as though practicing math is the most fun way to fill their free time, but doing some extra work can help to build confidence that can be especially important when taking a math test. Student-athletes spend more of their team-affiliated time practicing than playing, and the same goes for students who participate in additional extracurricular activities like theater or band. The same practice-centric approach that helps students bolster their extracurricular activity performance can work with strengthening math skills. Students and their parents can ask teachers for extra practice tests so they can better understand concepts and improve their problem-solving skills. Ask questions A survey of more than 400 high school math teachers conducted by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics found that two-thirds of the educators surveyed feel asking for clarification when a lesson is not being understood is the best thing students can do to improve their performance in math. Questions are a vital component of academia and math is a complex subject, so students should not hesitate or feel embarrassed if they do not understand a concept or lesson. Try not to make it all about memorization Seventy-five per cent of the educators surveyed emphasized the benefits of understanding mathematical concepts and when to apply them

as opposed to simply memorizing formulas. When students understand the concepts, they’re in a better position to know when to use formulas. Without an understanding of the concepts, students may not use the right formula and may struggle to retain information throughout the rest of the course. Find fun ways to use math and fine-tune your skills According to Mathnasium®, a schoolunaffiliated math instruction program in the United States, a wide range of games can help students see math in a whole new light. The board game market is booming, and many board

games offer a fun way to engage with math without making students feel like they’re studying or doing extra homework. Logic puzzles and brain teasers also encourage players to employ mathematical concepts to solve them, even if students don’t recognize that. Mathnasium® notes that even puzzles require mathematical thinking and algebra skills to solve them. The increased emphasis on math in schools has made now a great time for students to embrace ways to sharpen their skills in this important and useful subject. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

HOW TO MINIMIZE DISTRACTIONS DURING STUDY TIME Digital technology may have impacted life for the better in many ways, but the same devices that educate, entertain and connect users can distract students at every turn. According to a 2026 study on the habits of highly effective students published on Research.com, students are distracted for roughly 35 per cent of their total study time on average. But smartphones, tablets and gaming systems are not the only distractions that students face. Learning to turn attention away from distractions is a key to a successful study session. Here are some ways to manage distractions while studying for academic success. Gatekeep digital distractions Students can move their phones entirely out of arm’s reach or into another room while studying. When studying on tablets or laptops, students can use software to disable non-academic platforms, so they’re not tempted to check social media or browse the internet. Avoid cognitive fatigue Study blocks should be a maximum of two hours per course before switching subjects to keep the mind

LEARNING TO TURN ATTENTION AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS IS A KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL STUDY SESSION.

fresh. Trying to maintain intense concentration for hours on end often ends with attention waning and the brain seeking other stimuli. Study during the day People naturally get tired after dark, which means moving study times to daylight hours may lead to greater success. Set aside a dedicated study area Students should establish a consistent, quiet and remote study spot that is physically separated from visual and auditory disruptions. Also, a study area should be separate

from relaxation spots, so the brain automatically switches to focus on the task at hand.

Others may prefer ambient noise or instrumental music to drown out background noise.

Advise others not to disturb Students can establish boundaries with roommates or family members to ensure study sessions are not interrupted. Ask family members to avoid a designated study area and to silence phone notifications and alerts.

Build in breaks Study sessions can be broken up with breaks to provide a change of scenery and to grab snacks and beverages or make a trip to the restroom. Minimizing distractions while studying requires students to determine what works for them in a study environment. Additional measures to reduce external stimuli also may need to be implemented.

Quiet the environment. Some students prefer complete silence for studying and can benefit from noise-cancelling headphones.

Carrington College THE CONFIDENCE TO LEARN. THE CHARACTER TO LEAD. Education should do more than prepare children for the next grade – it should prepare them for life. Children have a natural tendency to be curious, and this curiosity inspires learning. However, when the curriculum and environment are not adjusted to meet individual capabilities, school can become about keeping up instead of growing, or if not challenging enough for advanced children, even the brightest, most curious lose the natural flame of learning. We have seen children thrive when education, which includes both academics and personal growth, is designed with the child in mind. This means it works alongside a child’s innate development – not the other way around. Children progress in areas of strength, while time and support are provided for areas of development. This allows children to flourish, gaps are minimized, and interest in learning is maximized. Establishing high standards for academic excellence is important but it’s only part of a child’s story. At Carrington, we aspire for every child to graduate with the highest knowledge and with the courage to speak up, the resilience to persevere, the inspiration to keep learning, and the confidence to embrace challenges with grit. Imagine your child attending a program that challenges their individual capabilities at the right time of readiness, while encouraging them to think deeply, ask questions, take meaningful risks, and to discover the satisfaction that comes from solving problems independently. Instead of a passive listener, imagine your child as an active learner, which leads to interest in learning, deeper understanding, 28 CITY PARENT | September 2026

and an inquisitive mind. Imagine your child interacting in an enriched, stimulating environment, learning from exceptional educators who show interest in the success and development of each child as well as learning through peer collaboration, leadership opportunities, mentoring, and shared responsibility. This sounds like an exciting environment to learn as every interaction becomes an opportunity to strengthen confidence, communication, empathy, character, and self-worth, all of which are known as executive function and self-regulation skills – the very qualities research identifies as essential for academic and lifelong personal success. Research in developmental psychology and neuroscience consistently shows that children who can regulate their emotions, sustain attention, recover from setbacks, think independently, and work

collaboratively are better equipped to achieve academically. These skills are not separate from learning as they are intertwined; they are the foundation that makes deep academic learning possible. Many parents can relate that in life, rarely if at all, were they asked the mark they received on a test, but everyone observes the person they have become from their character, integrity, curiosity, compassion, and confidence to their tenacity, grit, and capability to thrive in times of challenge. Parents spend countless hours thinking about their child’s education; what they will learn, how they will perform, and the opportunities that lie ahead. But every so often, it’s worth asking a different question: When my child is 25 years old, what kind of person do I hope they will become? Who your child becomes will shape every opportunity,

every relationship, professional opportunities, and every life success that follows. Your child deserves a schooling environment with a difference – Carrington children love learning and coming to school! Our purpose is to nurture inquisitive minds, compassionate hearts, resilient spirits, and the confidence to lead lives of purpose, contribution, and integrity. Academic excellence is the foundation, but character is what gives that excellence meaning. “Knowledge prepares children for examinations. Character prepares them for life. A truly exceptional education develops both.” We invite you to visit and to discover how an environment designed around your child’s development can inspire a lifelong love of learning, spark confidence, and build personal attributes needed to thrive both in school and beyond. cityparent.com

Kingsway College School WHERE INSPIRATION FUELS LEARNING At Kingsway College School, we believe the future belongs to students who can think critically, create boldly, and navigate complexity with confidence and joy. KCS is a JK–12, co-ed, CAIS- accredited independent school offering a contemporary liberal arts continuum. Built on a strong academic foundation and designed to develop the habits of mind that matter most: curiosity, analysis, creativity, and purpose, our students stand out because they stand ready to thrive in an everchanging world. What sets KCS apart is the way we extend that foundation through experiential, place-based learning, leveraging the extraordinary spaces and opportunities of Toronto. Students don’t just learn about the world, they learn in it, gaining real context for the ideas they encounter in classrooms. At our Senior School (Grades 9–12), we bring that mission to life through a “City as Classroom” approach. Academics remain at the core of what we do and we set high expectations for scholarship and character. KCS brings 37 years of educational excellence as a highly regarded Junior School into a full JK–12 journey that is coherent and intentional. Students grow through a program that balances challenge with care, where wellbeing is the foundation that allows learning to flourish. As a CAIS-accredited school, KCS is held to and has received commendation on, nationally recognized standards for program quality, student development, governance, and continuous improvement. This accreditation is more than a credential – it is a commitment to excellence, accountability, and the long- term value of a KCS education. 36 CITY PARENT | September 2026

A defining feature of the KCS Senior School experience is PATH – a mentored, multi-year pathway that empowers students to pursue questions that matter to them. PATH is not an add-on; it’s a signature element of our program architecture. Students explore passions, build portfolios, develop agency, and learn how to advocate for themselves – skills that are essential for life beyond school. With coaching from dedicated faculty and access to professional mentors, students learn to turn interest into inquiry, and inquiry into meaningful work that can be shared, presented, and celebrated. We also believe that deep learning is strengthened by proximity to expertise. Through our Learning Partners, professionals ranging from scientists and entrepreneurs to artists and makers, students gain insight into what real work looks like in real environments. When students see learning

connected to the world around them, motivation rises and relevance becomes unmistakable. It’s how we answer that timeless student question: “Why do we need to learn this?” At KCS, students discover that learning is not preparation for life, it is life, practiced with guidance and purpose. The outcomes are compelling. At the time of printing, our 27 graduating students have received 150 postsecondary offers across Canada and have earned more than $245,000 in scholarships, a reflection of their diverse talents, hard work, and aspirations. Our graduates pursue programs they choose – because their learning has helped them discover who they are, what they care about, and what they are capable of. During our recent accreditation cycle, KCS was celebrated for the strength of our student challenge and support – an external validation of what families experience every day: high

expectations and expert educators that help students thrive. At KCS Senior School, we don’t just teach subjects; we develop learners. Through rigorous academics, mentored pathways, and a city-wide learning environment, students build the confidence and competence to create positive change. If you think all schools are the same, we invite you to experience KCS, and be pleasantly surprised. Explore more at kcs.on.ca and discover how KCS Senior School is shaping the future of education.

Kingsway College 120 YEARS OF “SERVICE NOT FAME” On a Thursday afternoon in Oshawa, a group of Kingsway College students is practising lifts and tumbling passes in the gymnasium. They are members of Aerials, the school’s acrobatics troupe. By spring, they will have performed for audiences across the region and beyond. This is not what you might see in most high schools. But then, Kingsway College has never been afraid to take a different approach to help students discover faith, purpose and service. Founded in 1903, Kingsway College is a private Christian day and boarding high school on a 75-acre campus in Oshawa. The school is operated by the Seventhday Adventist Church in Canada and welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds. Its mission is straightforward: to reflect Jesus Christ and prepare students for His service. That sense of mission shows up in the classroom, but it doesn’t stop there. Kingsway follows the Ontario curriculum and offers roughly 70 courses for students in Grades 9 to 12, leading to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma. This year, Kingsway 38 CITY PARENT | September 2026

College is excited to offer five new Advanced Placement courses. Teachers work with students in a small-school environment, with academic support available when students need a little extra help. Aerials is one of the touring groups at Kingsway College, alongside Concert Band, Symphonic Choir, Dramatics Club, and Strings Ensembles. Students can also take part in varsity sports and intramurals, student leadership, campus ministries, outdoor activities, and a range of clubs. The King Fitness Complex includes two full-sized basketball courts, a weight room, and squash and racquetball courts. For boarding students, school doesn’t end when the bell rings. The residences, cafeteria, fitness facilities, clubs and evening activities create a campus community that carries on well beyond the classroom. Students come to Kingsway from Canada and around the world, bringing different cultures, experiences and perspectives with them. Faith is part of daily life at Kingsway College. Bible studies, chapel, vespers, Week of Prayer

and Power Weekend programs give students regular opportunities to explore their faith and ask questions. Kingsway also observes the Seventh-day Sabbath, with worship, music, fellowship and other activities from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. For some students, it becomes one of the defining rhythms of their time at the school. Then there is the motto: “Service Not Fame.” It is easy for a school motto to become something printed on a wall and forgotten. Whether it’s participation in outreach days, helping with community cleanups, food banks, local schools or other projects, service is built into student life at Kingsway College. Mission trips have taken Kingsway students across North and Central America and beyond, where they have participated in construction projects, Vacation Bible Schools, tutoring and other community initiatives. The school also recognizes that high school is about more than grades and activities. Kingsway’s mental health and wellness programming provides emotional

support and creates opportunities for students to develop socially and emotionally, while helping them build healthy relationships, discover their strengths, and think about their purpose. WHAT A SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT SHOULD BE The right school environment matters! Childhood should be treasured because learning comes

48 CITY PARENT | September 2026

instinctively to them. Too often though, the flame of curiosity slows when children are required to remain seated for long periods and the teacher is the only source of learning. A school environment should continue to nurture the desire to learn something new, encourage discovery, exploration, and develop a child’s unique strengths and talents. When children learn in a thoughtfully prepared environment that meets their stage of development, they grow with confidence at a pace that is both appropriately challenging and achievable, depending on the child’s capabilities. Rather than expecting every child to learn the same thing, in the same way, at the same time, children experience learning that adapts to their developmental readiness preserving self-worth and building confidence

while developing a genuine love of learning. Children thrive at Peel Montessori because our environment allows for purposeful learning that is tailored to their capabilities. This means boredom and learning gaps are minimized since children progress ahead in areas of strength, while allowing time to reinforce developing concepts. Children work both independently and collaboratively – all the while feeling supported and inspired. They are happy when learning is active, engaging, and meaningful. Every child deserves to learn and grow in an environment where curiosity is encouraged, questions are welcomed, and mistakes are recognized as valuable opportunities for growth. As they do, they develop the capability to think independently, solve problems creatively, collaborate respectfully, and persevere when learning becomes challenging. Confidence grows when a child recognizes that persistence leads to accomplishment, resilience develops through experience, and character is strengthened through meaningful experiences, relationships, and shared responsibility. Prominent research in developmental neuroscience confirms what our educational philosophy has embraced for more than thirty-four years: the environment in which children learn profoundly influences the developing brain and establishes the habits, attitudes, and behaviours that support the love of lifelong learning. We intentionally create a school environment that nurtures both academic excellence, character

AN EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATION AND ENVIRONMENT DOES MORE THAN PREPARE CHILDREN FOR THE NEXT GRADE. IT PREPARES THEM FOR LIFE. growth, and life skills to help children build a solid foundation in which they can flourish in life. Most importantly, we aspire for our students to experience more than strong academic foundations. They cultivate into capable, compassionate, and self-motivated young people who are prepared to thrive not only in school, but in high school, university, future careers, and throughout life. When we prepare the right environment and guide the child with patience and purpose, remarkable things become possible. When children feel capable, respected, and inspired, academic achievement becomes a natural outcome. An exceptional education does more than prepare children for the next grade. The Study Academy UNLEASHING POTENTIAL: HOW THE STUDY ACADEMY EMPOWERS THE TWICE-EXCEPTIONAL LEARNER In the landscape of education, there exists a unique and often misunderstood student: the twiceexceptional (2e) learner. These bright, intellectually curious individuals possess remarkable gifts and talents, yet are often challenged by the complexities of learning differences such as ADHD, SLD, or autism spectrum disorder. For too long, traditional educational settings have struggled to adequately support these students, often failing to address either their exceptional abilities or their specific challenges. This is precisely where The Study Academy distinguishes itself, standing as a beacon for 2e learners in Toronto and beyond. The Study Academy was founded on the profound understanding that 2e students are not simply “gifted with a learning disability” or “struggling despite their intelligence.” They are, rather, individuals whose strengths and challenges are intricately interwoven, creating a distinct learning profile that demands a specialized approach. At The Study Academy, the focus is not on remediation in isolation, nor solely on enrichment, but on a holistic, integrated strategy that nurtures every facet of the 2e student. What sets The Study Academy apart is its unwavering commitment to individualized learning. With an impressive student-to-teacher ratio, each student receives the personalized attention crucial for their success. while simultaneously developing strategies to address their areas of need. Every student at The Study Academy benefits from a tailored Learning Plan, outlining their specific learning profile, accessibility needs, and strategies for academic and personal growth. The curriculum itself is designed to engage the curious and divergent minds of 2e learners. Built upon Ministry of Education guidelines, inquiry-based learning and collaborative projects encourage students to delve deep into subjects they are passionate about, fostering critical thinking and creative problemsolving. Beyond core academics, a rich array of elective courses, from digital creations to outdoor skills and literary adventures, provides avenues

for students to explore their diverse interests and discover new talents. This comprehensive approach ensures that giftedness is not stifled but celebrated and channelled productively. Crucially, The Study Academy understands that academic success for 2e learners is inextricably linked to their social and emotional wellbeing. The school cultivates a warm, collegial, and inclusive environment where students feel supported and empowered to take academic risks. Opportunities for friendship and social engagement are abundant, fostering a sense of belonging that is vital for students who may have felt out of place in other settings. Through student council, house systems, and extracurricular activities, students

develop leadership skills, build relationships, and gain confidence in who they are as learners and individuals. Ultimately, The Study Academy is more than just a school; it’s a community dedicated to empowering twice-exceptional learners to realize their full potential. NURTURING TOMORROW’S THINKERS Since its founding in 2002, J. Addison School has been dedicated to cultivating well-rounded individuals – intellectually, socially, and emotionally – while cultivating a lifelong love of learning grounded in strong values and tradition. From the earliest years through graduation, we emphasize respect, kindness, and manner, helping students grow into confident, responsible individuals who contribute positively to their communities. Our Elementary program (K-Grade 8) enriches the Ontario Curriculum with inquiry-based and experiential approaches inspired by Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and IB practices. Teachers thoughtfully blend these methods

to personalize learning, recognizing that children learn in different ways while maintaining high academic

standards. Hands-on exploration, collaboration, and meaningful projects encourage curiosity,

independence, and strong learning habits from an early age. We believe in discipline with care and in education as a partnership. Close communication with families and regular opportunities for engagement ensure that students feel known, supported, and challenged. This foundation prepares students for our Secondary program, where learning deepens through research, discussion, collaboration, and projectbased application. They learn to speak for themselves and lead others, and grow into compassionate and ethical citizens. We call this the Signature of a BSS Girl. human capabilities. Grounded in the Signature of a BSS Girl, our approach challenges students to think critically, act ethically, innovate courageously and engage meaningfully with the world around them. Through authentic learning experiences, our expert teachers connect disciplines, ideas and real-world issues so girls develop the confidence, agency and leadership to shape the future rather than simply respond to it. In the Junior School (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 6), students engage in meaningful transdisciplinary investigations and projects that build a strong foundation in mathematics, literacy and research. In Grades 7 and 8, students tackle more complex problems with a global lens, and deepen their critical thinking skills. Embracing the growth and challenges of early adolescence, they

encounter new perspectives and are empowered to take risks. In Grades 9 to 12, students can immerse themselves into their preferred areas of study with more than 100 credit courses offered. Advanced Placement (AP) courses provide an even deeper academic challenge with university-level material and opportunities to conduct original research. Our rigorous academic program equips students with excellent critical thinking, analytical and research skills, so our graduates are well prepared for their post-secondary journey. At BSS, learning happens everywhere. Through a rich cocurricular program that includes the arts, athletics, global learning, outdoor education and volunteer service, students explore their interests, increase their knowledge, develop

their skills and build their confidence. Through formal training, collaboration and structured feedback, they explore and develop their leadership skills and style in a purposeful and impactful way. Our 7.5-acre campus includes STEAM-focused learning spaces; arts, design technology, multimedia and film labs; and a turf field. With an emphasis on spaces that foster connectedness and belonging, BSS is a unique intersection of old and new - from the stained glass and leaded windows of our original building to the open-concept classrooms designed to spark curiosity and collaboration in our STEAM wing. With more than $2 million available in financial assistance, we ensure that more students discover themselves at BSS. cityparent.com
