EDITOR’S NOTE
up front
AND I THOUGHT GRADUATION WAS HARD… I thought graduation was hard, but nothing prepared me for my son’s wedding. The day came in a flash of anticipation and passed in what felt like a hot minute. After months of planning, it was suddenly over – the fading laughter, embraces, photographs, happy tears, and the now-empty dance floor. How could a day we had waited so long for disappear so quickly? Perhaps we cry at life’s happiest moments because joy and sadness coexist. Watching my son begin this new chapter, I remembered the little boy he was, the young man he became, and all the memories between. We spend years preparing our children to stand on their own. Change is inevitable but experiencing it is different from understanding it. A wedding celebrates a beginning but also marks a turning point for the family watching from the sidelines. What surprised me most was realizing my two younger sons felt the same bittersweet emotions. I had been so absorbed in my own feelings that I hadn’t considered how deeply their brother’s wedding might affect them. They, too, recognized that life was changing, as they had always known it. We were celebrating together, each of us processing the moment in our own way.
Then came the mother-and-son dance. When I heard the song, he had chosen, “I’ll Stand by You”, I was overcome with emotion. He had somehow found the words that expressed exactly how I had always felt. Through every stage of his life, my love and support were never conditional. No truer words could have been spoken, and in that moment, the song said everything my heart held. The greatest joy of the day was seeing the newlyweds together. Their smiles, the love between them, and their happiness as they begin their life together as Mr. and Mrs., made every tear worthwhile. In seeing them so genuinely happy, I understood that letting go doesn’t mean losing what matters, it means making room for a new kind of closeness. I never expected a wedding to make me reflect so deeply on time, family, and the passage of life. Perhaps that is why we cry; we are celebrating what lies ahead while acknowledging that what came before will never be quite the same. Sometimes the happiest moments remind us just how much life changes. Seeing our children so happy shows that letting go of a little piece of the past is worth it.

SCREEN-FREE WAYS TO KEEP KIDS ENGAGED OVER THE HOLIDAY BREAK The holiday season is a time to reunite with family and friends. Late December also is a time for students to relax and recharge over the holiday break, which typically begins a day or so before Christmas and extends until the first weekday after New Year’s Day. Parents know that kids tend to reach for their devices when they have lots of time on their hands, and the holiday break from school is no exception. Children who receive new devices as holiday presents may be even more tempted to spend hours on end looking at screens. That temptation is understandable, but succumbing to it can be detrimental. A 2023 study published in the journal Cureus noted that excessive screen time can adversely affect academic performance and even reduce the

frequency and quality of interactions between children and their caregivers. The study also found that excessive screen time can increase
the likelihood of obesity, sleep disorders, depression, and anxiety. Fewer hours of daylight, colder temperatures and the general lack of structure over holiday breaks can increase the chances kids reach for screens during the late-December break from school. But parents looking to fill kids’ time with healthier pursuits can look to these screen-free ways to engage youngsters over the holiday break. Spend time in the great outdoors It might be cold outside, but that does not mean families need to spend their entire holiday break indoors. In fact, parents can anticipate outdoor activities over the break and incorporate such recreation into their holiday shopping. When buying holiday gifts for kids, upgrade their outdoor gear. A new moisture-wicking base layer can be paired with hand warmers and glove liners to provide extra insulation for outdoor activities like sledding, hiking, and ice skating.

Incorporate board games into your daily holiday break routine Board games have been popular pastimes for decades, and for good reason. The Australia-based Child Development Clinic notes that board and tabletop games offer a host of developmental benefits to children. Board games engage social skills such as cooperation and turn-taking which are critical to kids’ development. A 2016 study published in The Journal of Mathematical Behavior also found that number board games help young children develop their early mathematical skills. Board games also can be incorporated into holiday gift-giving, and the chance to play a new game or games may excite curious kids looking for something to do during their break from school. Create New Year’s-themed crafts The excitement of the holiday season does not have to end once the presents are opened on December 25. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are fun days to look forward to once Christmas has come and gone. Some New Year’s-themed craft projects can spark kids’ creativity and even help them engage, maintain and strengthen critical thinking and problem-solving skills they’re developing at school. Screens fight for kids’ attention over the holiday season break from school. But parents can incorporate various screen-free activities into their holiday break routines. – Metro Creative cityparent.com

HOLIDAY CRAFTS FOR KIDS Many people celebrate the holiday season, but perhaps no people enjoy this festive time of year as much as young children. Kids’ eager eyes cannot wait to see homes transformed into winter wonderlands, and they anxiously count down the days until they can tear into mountains of presents. The weeks leading up to the holidays are among the most exciting of the year. When looking to wrangle kids’ nervous holiday season energy, simple crafts are great at keeping little ones busy while parents tackle holiday responsibilities. These crafty projects can serve as new family traditions or a way to increase the number of holiday keepsakes.
WHEN LOOKING TO WRANGLE KIDS’ NERVOUS HOLIDAY SEASON ENERGY, SIMPLE CRAFTS ARE GREAT AT KEEPING LITTLE ONES BUSY WHILE PARENTS TACKLE HOLIDAY RESPONSIBILITIES 12 CITY PARENT | November 2026
Here are several holiday craft ideas that the young (and young at heart) can enjoy, courtesy of Good Housekeeping, Women’s Day and Chalk Academy. Popsicle stick trees What would a kids’ craft be if it didn’t include popsicle sticks? Cut colourful (or hand painted) popsicle sticks into pieces that gradually get smaller to mimic the triangle taper of a Christmas tree. Glue each cut piece to an intact, vertical popsicle stick, leaving a little space between “boughs.” Attach a star on the top of the tree, and glue on rhinestones or metallic accents for some bling. A loop of ribbon or jute rope is the finishing touch glued on to the top so these adorable trees can be hung on the actual Christmas tree. Paper plate angels No tree is complete without a topper, and a smiling angel fits the bill perfectly. Visit a party store to purchase gold or silver paper plates. Also, pick up wooden balls for the face, wood dowels, glue, and ribbon. Pipe cleaners can be bent into a halo, too. Cut a V shape out of what will serve as the top of the angel, and the bottom left and right sides. This will make wing and skirt shapes from the plate. Glue the dowel to the ball and then attach to the back of the cut plate. Add the halo and ribbon
around the neck and any other embellishments. You also can draw a face on the wood ball with permanent markers.
ribbon, pom poms, trim, cut-outs, stickers, and more. Fabric glue or another sturdy adhesive will keep all the items in place.
Pipe cleaner garland Kids can make festive garland to hang on the tree with something as simple as pipe cleaners. The pipe cleaners can be bent into circles or other shapes and linked together. Any extras can be turned into bows to use on presents.
Bird feeder wreath This idea blends crafting, science and a love of nature. Kids can place sliced fruit, berries, small sprigs of rosemary, and nuts into a bundt cake tray filled with water. Freeze the tray overnight. Then release the ice wreath and hang outside to add a festive touch and bring winter wildlife to the yard. Holiday craft projects are a great way to keep little ones busy while parents tend to holiday planning and other seasonal tasks. – Metro Creative

CHRISTMAS BISCUITS Makes approximately 24 cookies For the dough: 11 ⁄2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted, plus extra for dusting 11 ⁄3 cups confectioner’s sugar, plus extra for dusting 3 ⁄4 cup almond meal 1 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed 1 large egg yolk 1 tablespoon cold water 1 ⁄2 teaspoon fine salt For the icing and decoration: 4 cups confectioner’s sugar 3 tablespoons meringue powder 7 tablespoons warm water, combined with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, assorted food colour (e. g., red, pink and turquoise), assorted coloured sugar crystals (e. g., red, pink and white) For the dough: 1. Preheat oven to 350F. Grease and line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. 18 CITY PARENT | November 2026
2. Combine flour, confectioner’s sugar and almond meal in a large mixing bowl. Stir well to mix. 3. Add butter, egg yolk, water, and salt, and mix well with an electric mixer with spiral attachments until mixture starts to come together as a dough. 4. Turn out onto a floured surface and knead briefly until even. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 30 minutes. 5. After chilling, roll out dough on a lightly floured surface to approximately 0.25” thickness. 6. Use assorted star-shaped cookie cutters to cut out approximately 23 variably sized star shapes. Arrange between prepared sheets, spaced apart.
7. From remaining dough, cut out one teardrop and two semi-circles of dough, using appropriate cutters or working freehand with a paring knife. Arrange on one of the baking sheets. 8. Bake cookies for 12 to 15 minutes, until golden and dry to the touch. Remove to cooling racks to cool. For the icing and decoration: 9. Thoroughly stir together confectioner’s sugar and meringue powder in a large mixing bowl. 10. Gradually beat in warm water and vanilla extract mixture using an electric mixer until icing is smooth and of a flooding consistency; you may not need all the water.
11. Divide icing between three bowls. Colour two bowls pink and red, respectively, by beating in enough pink and red colouring to achieve uniform colours. Leave the third bowl uncoloured. 12. Spoon pink and red icing into separate piping bags fitted with small, round-tip nozzles. 13. To ice the cookies, pipe around their perimeters with the icings to create borders. Fill in middle of cookies with more icing; you can use a damp, warm offset palette knife to spread out icing to an even finish. 14. Carefully transfer iced cookies to cooling racks, decorating with the sugar crystals in festive patterns. 15. Using same technique as in steps 13 and 14, ice teardrop cookie with red and white icing for Santa’s hat and beard, respectively. Ice the two semi-circle cookies with white icing. 16. Before icings have set, carefully attach semi-circle cookies to teardrop cookie to fashion Santa’s mustache. Colour any remaining white icing with turquoise colouring and then dab onto teardrop cookie for Santa’s eyes. Pipe some pink icing below eyes for his nose. 17. Let cookies set and harden before serving. Tip: Flooding consistency should be like the consistency of toothpaste. If your icing is too thick, thin it out with some warm water, mixing it into the icing in drops Preparation time: 1 hour, 20 minutes Cooling time: 30 minutes – Metro Creative cityparent.com

shopping tips
AGE-BASED GUIDELINES FOR BUYING TOYS AND GIFTS The holiday season involves making holiday gift lists and checking them twice, or even more frequently to ensure that gift-givers find the best fit for recipients. While age may only be a number in certain instances, when it comes to gifting, age should be a consideration – particularly when kids are involved. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that an estimated 86,000 children are treated for toyrelated injuries each year and are younger than five-years-old. Toyrelated injuries are preventable, and prevention often comes down to choosing age-appropriate toys for kids. Toys can be choking hazards when small toys or those with small pieces are given to children who are too young to use them safely. Kids are curious and often put items in their mouths. Choking is the fourth-leading cause of unintentional death in children under age five, indicates The Emergency Center. Falls, eye injuries, drowning, and motor accidents are leading causes of gift-related injuries. Here’s how to select age-appropriate gifts.
THERE ARE MANY WHO ADVOCATE FOR WAITING TO GIVE YOUNG CHILDREN SMARTPHONES AND TABLETS DUE TO THE CONSEQUENCES OF EXCESSIVE SCREEN TIME. 24 CITY PARENT | November 2026
These gifts should only be purchased for those with proven ability, and even then, accompanied with the appropriate safety gear. This can include helmets, knee pads and eye protection.
Read the packaging carefully Most toys and other children’s products will come with an age range recommendation. While some kids may be mature beyond their years, it’s best to choose gifts that fall within the recommended range. This is particularly the case for infants, toddlers and any child under the age of five. Avoid fad gifts Children often want the latest and greatest gadgets and toys for gifts even if they are not the smartest choices for their ages. Resist the urge to buy something just to be the “cool parent or grandparent,” especially if it isn’t age-appropriate. Mermaid tails became popular in recent years, and likely will see increased presence thanks to the home-viewing release of a
popular live-action mermaid movie. However, they limit movement and can make swimming more difficult, potentially increasing the risk of drowning. Provide safety gear As children age, they may be more interested in gifts that appeal to hobbies and abilities. Scooters, bicycles, skates, and other items are popular among older children.
Consider waiting before gifting certain electronics Although children may be able to use devices safely, there are many who advocate for waiting to give young children smartphones and tablets due to the consequences of excessive screen time. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry says children ages two to five should limit noneducational screen time to about one hour per weekday and three hours on weekend days. Children should be encouraged to pursue healthy habits that limit use of screens, so gift-givers can look for gifts that help to this end. Age-appropriate gifts ensure safety for the youngest people on holiday gift lists. – Metro Creative

family fun NIEMI FAMILY FARM CHRISTMAS MARKET WORDS BY ANDREW HIND Some claim the most festive Christmas markets exist in wintry Finland. It would be appropriate, as the Finnish town of Rovaniemi, deep in Lapland, proudly declares itself the official home of Santa Claus. Thankfully, there is no need to go international to experience an authentic Scandinavian holiday market. A slice of yuletide Finland exists at Niemi Family Farm in Mount Albert, an hour north of Toronto. From late November through December, Niemi Family Farm is wrapped in holiday cheer as it hosts its annual Christmas Market (Fridays and Saturdays, starting Nov. 13). The Christmas Market is divided into two zones, one free and the other with an entrance fee. Christmas Market The free experience is the market itself – both outdoor in traditional wooden stalls draped in greenery, and indoors out of the elements 28 CITY PARENT | November 2026
There are yet more shopping experiences. Those with a sweet tooth will want to visit CandyLand with its shelves lined by specialty sweets and chocolates from both Europe and North America. The Scandinavian Store is filled with tastes of Finland, and the Gnome Shop is overflowing with Christmas tree ornaments, décor, gift items, maple syrup, and local honey.
where you can browse the offerings of over 60 local vendors, all selling unique artisanal items, perfect for gift giving. Ward off the chill with hot chocolate, apple cider, or glögi, a delightful warmed Finnish drink that is like mulled wine but non-alcoholic. Follow your nose to the bakery and its assortment of cookies, gingersnaps, and other sweets. You must try pulla, a Finnish braided holiday sweet bread. It smells as heavenly as it tastes.
Gnome Ville For an even more festive experience, purchase a ticket and follow a beautifully lit trail to Gnome Ville, the second market experience. Admission is $29.99 for adults, $19.99 for children (2-12) and seniors, infants enter free. A family pass (two adults, two children) is $79.99 Admission grants access to a wide range of family-friendly activities. Ride the farm’s Christmas Train, which takes you around the farm while playing the Christmas Story;
explore a secret forest where gnomes (tontuu in Finnish folklore) reside; take photos at a number of festive vignettes; head over to the workshop to enjoy a visit with merry Santa Claus; decorate cookies with Mrs. Claus; roast s’mores; and visit with barnyard animals like sheep, goats, and bunnies. Don’t leave Niemi’s without selecting the perfect Christmas tree upon which to hang sparkling lights and dazzling ornaments. The farm has a huge selection of pre-cut trees to choose from. Hitch up the team and point your sleigh for Niemi’s Family Farm to find your Christmas spirit.
