APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS
This winter, we experienced a beautiful (said no one ever) non-stop mountain of snow. I think even the snow bunnies have had more than enough.
Well, the wait is over: spring is in the air at lightspeed. Let’s hop, skip, and jump our way into April!
“April showers bring May flowers” reminds us of the beauty and renewal that follows the rain. It’s a simple phrase, yet it holds deep meaning – not just in nature, but in life itself.
April is often a month of transition. The weather is unpredictable, with grey skies, sudden downpours, and the lingering chill of winter. But beneath the surface, something incredible is happening. The rain nourishes the earth, preparing it for the explosion of colour and life that May brings. Flowers bloom, trees regain their lush green leaves, and the world feels refreshed and alive.
This phrase is also a metaphor for life’s challenges and rewards. Just as rain is necessary for growth in nature, difficulties and setbacks in life often pave the way for brighter days. The struggles we endure – the hard
work, the patience, and the perseverance – often lead to moments of joy and success. It’s a reminder that even in our stormiest seasons, something beautiful is waiting on the other side.
We celebrate the essence of renewal and change. As we move into spring, we look for ways to refresh our homes, minds, and daily habits. Whether it’s gardening ideas, spring cleaning techniques, wellness tips, or exciting new recipes, our goal is to inspire you to greet the season with enthusiasm.
April’s rain might seem gloomy at times, but it brings with it a wonderful promise – the promise of colourful flowers, extended daylight that invites us to spend more time outdoors where the warmth of the sun will gradually replace the chill of winter, encouraging us to gather with friends and family.
So, as the rain pours down, let’s welcome the season, confident that brighter and more beautiful days are on the horizon.
Happy spring!

HOW TO GET KIDS MORE ENGAGED IN THEIR DENTAL HEALTH
Dental health should be a priority at any age, and it is especially important for children. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says more than half of children between the ages of six and eight have had a cavity in at least one of their primary teeth. Also, more than half of adolescents aged 12 to 19 have had a cavity in at least one permanent tooth. Cavities and other oral health conditions, such as periodontal diseases, are largely preventable with proper oral hygiene.
Parents know that getting children – especially young ones – to care for their teeth in the correct manner may require some help and then reinforcement throughout the developmental years. However, there are ways to make dental care a more engaging activity for youngsters.
Use plaque-disclosing tablets
Show children just where they may need to direct more brushing effort with plaque-disclosing tablets. These tablets use food-grade colouring in them, which sticks to areas with plaque accumulation. After chewing the tablets and the child smiles, he or she will see the spots where efforts need to be ramped up. This can be a fun lesson as children will likely enjoy seeing their teeth covered in the tablet colour.
Flavoured toothpastes and mouthwashes
Mint reigns supreme in oral health products as the dominant flavour, but not all children are enamored with that taste. Most oral care products geared toward kids come in different flavours like bubble gum and berry. Kids can take active roles in their oral health by choosing the products they prefer to use.
Electronic toothbrushes
Children may enjoy using electronic toothbrushes because they are easy to manoeuvre and can even seem like a toy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, electric toothbrushes generally are considered more effective at removing plaque and keeping teeth clean. That benefits kids and adults because it potentially means fewer painful visits with the dentist.
Make it a competition
Children love games and healthy competition between peers and siblings. Offer a prize (non-sugary, of course) to children who brush and floss daily for the required times. Extra points can be awarded for every

dental wellness check that comes back with a glowing report.
Make smart food choices
Engage children in lessons and choices about which foods are good for oral health and which may be poor. Sticky foods or those with a lot of sugary content should only be occasional treats. The entire family can work together to plan meals around foods that are good for the teeth and gums, such as crunchy
veggies, leafy greens, high-calcium dairy products, and fatty fish.
Practice on pets
Pets need clean teeth, too. Children may enjoy not only brushing their own teeth, but learning how to keep their companion animals’ mouths healthy with brushing and care. Various strategies can increase the chances that kids engage with oral hygiene practices early on.

GREAT WAYS TO BOND WITH YOUR NEW INFANT
A parent’s job begins the moment a woman learns she is pregnant. Upon receiving such news, women typically make important changes to ensure the well-being of the fetuses growing inside them.
Once a child is born, the first few weeks with baby certainly can be a whirlwind. During this period, pediatricians note how important bonding with parents is for a baby’s development. Parents may be unaware that the touches, cuddles and feelings of safety and security provided by them help set a foundation for emotional well-being, which can last throughout their child’s life.
According to Jeff Simpson, Ph.D., adjunct professor of psychology at the University of Minnesota and an author of a study about childhood attachment, babies who were
securely attached to their mothers by 12 months old (turning to her for comfort when exploring an unfamiliar place) were more likely to come out of an argument in their early 20s still feeling connected to their partners. Simpson surmises that the ability to trust, love and resolve conflict develops in part from how people are treated as infants.
The Australian parenting website Raising Children Network says repeated human contact like singing, cuddling, talking, touching, and gazing into each other’s eyes enables a newborn’s brain to release hormones that help his or her brain to grow. This, in turn, helps to develop memory, thought and language.
New parents may wonder what they can do to foster strong bonds with their babies. The following are some strategies to build those bonds.
Breastfeed baby
Breastfeeding provides more than nutrition. The close contact during nursing helps the child to hear Mom’s heartbeat and gets skin-to-skin contact.
Make eye contact
Parents should keep eye contact with baby when engaging in feedings and other care. This helps the baby remember who their parents are and
reassures them that their parents can be trusted.
Read baby’s messages
A child who wants to engage will make little noises, such as cooing or laughing sounds. He or she also may look relaxed and interested, while some may seek out their parents. React to these messages promptly.
Respond to cries
Parents can do their best to always respond to cries for attention as it helps the baby to feel safe. This is key during the first three months of the baby’s life. As the baby ages and has already developed a bond, parents can encourage more self-soothing. Bonding is important for babies and parents. Developing a connection early on can provide a safe and nurturing environment that can set the course for the child to feel loved and supported throughout his or her lifetime.

THE EASTER BUNNY HOPS OVER TO MURPHY’S FARM MARKET
The Easter Bunny is arriving a wee bit early this year. On Friday, April 18, he hops into Alliston to pay a visit to Murphy’s Farm Market and Bakery.
Easter on the Farm is a highlight of the calendar year at Murphy’s Farm, a fifth-generation farm that hosts such family events as the summertime Kid’s Day, Fall Fest and the yuletide Christmas Market.
WORDS BY ANDREW HIND
Easter kicks off this parade of festivals. On this spring day, hundreds of children and their parents will descend on the farmyard to get in the holiday spirit.
In the pre-dawn gloom, the Easter Bunny will have run around the Fun Farm Yard, leaving colourful eggs behind for children to search out and collect. Once baskets are filled, these eggs can then be traded in for a delicious treat from the farm’s awardwinning bakery. You are a lucky child if you uncover a golden egg, earning you an extra special gift.
Always gregarious, the Easter Bunny lingers long enough to say hello to every little one that visits the farm, and even poses for photos. Essabased Maple Trail Farms, famed for their alpacas and their alpaca-based products, will also be present with their friendly, mop-headed animals. The alpacas jostle for affection from adoring children, humming happily when stroked or fed.
Railfence Books will be on hand as well. Founded by author Carolyn
Morris, the company specializes in wholesome books fostering respect for rural living and farm life. Morris engages children with story time readings, and little ones thrill at the opportunity to handle the fluffy chicks and ducklings that are a hallmark of any Railfence Books events.
After collecting eggs and petting barnyard animals, children can burn off their adrenaline in the Fun Farm Yard while parents follow their noses
into the Market, where shelves are filled with fresh-baked goods.
Easter on the Farm is a wonderful way to celebrate the season.
Also running at Murphy’s Farm Market for three week starting late April is Festival of Blooms, Simcoe County’s first pick-your-own-tulip event which includes photo ops in the stunning tulip field where 100,000 tulips will be in stunning display. There is also a wagon ride to the field, and activities for kids. A ticket ($19.95) allows you to pick ten stems. Consider also returning for the Mothers Day Market, on May 11, with more than 30 vendors, tulip picking, and live music.
Spring kicks off the year in fun fashion at Murphy’s Farm Market.
