A student’s guide to filing taxes

any post-secondary students are filing a tax return for the first time this year. If it’s your first time filing for yourself, or you’re a parent filing for your child, some simple tips can help you maximize your returns.

WHY STUDENTS SHOULD FILE THEIR TAXES

Filing often leads to extra cash in the bank. Even if you’re not making much money, chances are you’re eligible for some benefits and credits.

Did you know that most of the money you spend on tuition may be used to claim a tax credit? The credit is non-refundable, meaning it will reduce your federal tax up to the amount of tax owing.

Even if you didn’t make enough money last year to need the credit, you can carry it forward to after university, saving you money later when you owe tax on your income. You can also transfer it to your family or partner to help them reduce their tax owing.

GATHER YOUR DOCUMENTS

If you have a job, you will need to report this income and any other sources of income. For students that could include tips, scholarships, bursaries, study grants and payments from a registered education savings plan (RESP). If you’re lucky enough to receive a gift of cash from your

family or another benefactor, that money doesn’t count as income.

Next, think of all your expenses and deductions. Did you move for school? If so, you can claim your moving expenses. Are you making payments on your student loan? You can claim part of the interest you’ve paid.

You’ll also receive a form from your post-secondary institution that outlines the tuition paid to your school. With this you can claim tuition to reduce your tax owing.

HOW TO FILE

There are a variety of certified software products to meet your needs, some of which are free.

Filing online is the quickest way to get your return. When you do, it’s a good time to check your account for any uncashed cheques, which you may have missed if you moved and didn’t update your address. You can also register for direct deposit to receive any payments faster. If you have a modest income and simple tax situation, a volunteer through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) can do your taxes for you – for free.

One last tip – file on time. Filing on time ensures you can access government benefits and credits and that if you owe money, you will avoid the late-filing fee. Find more information specific to your situation at canada.ca/taxes-students. ● – News Canada

budget beats healthy eating

5 tips to shop smart without breaking the bank

ith the rising cost of fresh produce and protein, grocery shopping can feel discouraging these days. Eating healthy may seem out of reach.

Fortunately, with a little planning and some savvy choices, you can load up on healthy and anti-inflammatory foods without breaking the bank.

Here are five easy, affordable tips to help you eat well and feel great:

SHOP IN BULK

Stock up on staples like lentils, legumes, quinoa, oats, flaxseeds and nuts. These non-perishable items cost less when bought in larger quantities. Plus, you can freeze some of those nuts to prevent them from becoming stale.

Choosing frozen fruits and veggies is a great way to cut costs while getting all the nutrients your body needs.

BUY FROZEN FOODS

Choosing frozen fruits and veggies is a great way to cut costs while getting all the nutrients your body needs. They’re picked

at peak ripeness, frozen quickly to preserve their nutrients and flavours, and are often more affordable than fresh, while having the added benefit of a longer shelf life. Keep in mind that prices can vary depending on where you live.

COOK AT HOME

Preparing meals from scratch allows you to control costs and ingredients, ensuring they’re healthy and affordable. Plan your meals ahead of time, make large batches of anti-inflammatory dishes and freeze leftovers. This will save you time and money, and reduce food waste.

FOCUS ON AFFORDABLE PROTEINS

Incorporate affordable protein-rich foods such as eggs, lentils, chickpeas and black beans into your meal plan. If fresh fish is outside your budget, canned salmon and tuna are affordable sources of omega-3-rich protein.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Simplicity is the key to both budget and health. Choose recipes focusing on just five to 10 ingredients, like turkey burgers, lentil soup or veggie stir-fry. Less fuss, less cost – and still delicious. ● – News Canada

Breakfast made easy

ornings can be very difficult for many of us, especially if sleep issues are a factor and we didn’t get enough rest the night before. For some, eating first thing in the morning can be unappealing which can lead to delayed nourishment and potentially result in overeating later on.

If you find yourself low on energy, struggling with weight management, or just feeling tired, adding in breakfast, when possible, can truly help. Remember, having breakfast gives your body an additional nourishing meal to start the day, which can positively impact your overall health and energy level. It can also help with prevention and management of several health conditions.

Try to have breakfast within two hours of waking up. If this is a challenge, try adding it when you can. Keeping preparation time to less than 15 minutes for breakfast helps with mindset and motivation: the goal is to nourish rather than spend your energy on meal preparation.

An effective and simple way to assemble your breakfast is to break it down like this, try to include:

• A fistful or 1 piece of fruit,

• 1 cup (250 ml) or 2 pieces of whole grain food (ex., oats or whole grain toast) and,

• 1-2 servings of protein (ex.,1 cup low-fat yogurt or 1-2 eggs).

HERE ARE SOME EASY BREAKFAST IDEAS THAT INCORPORATE SOME OR ALL OF THOSE:

1. Microwave an egg in a mug and enjoy with fruit or toast on the side

2. Overnight oats with yogurt and berries

3. Yogurt bowl with fruit and homemade granola

4. Shredded wheat with fruit and milk

5. A breakfast burrito like the one shown from Kidney Community Kitchen

Not only do these simple combinations provide you with fuel to manage your busy day, they also help you meet your needs for fibre, protein, and fruits and vegetables. They also provide micronutrients, vitamins and minerals that help prevent deficiencies that are common in chronic kidney disease. Balancing your meals in this way can improve your blood sugar control, heart and di-

education learning disabilities

5 common learning disabilities

Students are often told that hard work is the path to success. Individuals who have learning disabilities may have to work even harder than their peers to be successful.

The Learning Disabilities Association of America says learning disabilities occur due to neurobiological and/or genetic factors that alter the way the brain functions. This can affect one or more cognitive processes related to learning and interfere with various skills, potentially preventing a person from acquiring the same amount of knowledge as others of the same age.

There are many learning disabilities, and the following are five of the most common, according to LD Resources Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization that helps find solutions to those who are affected by learning disabilities.

1. DYSLEXIA:

This learning disability can impede a person’s ability to read and comprehend text. Students may have trouble with phonemic awareness, or the way to break down words. Similar problems with phonological processing, or distinguishing between similar word sounds, can occur as well.

2. ADHD:

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder is marked by behaviors that make it difficult to pay attention and stay on task. The Masters in Special Education, a resource for finding work and study in special education concentrations, says there is debate over whether ADHD is a learning disability. But there is no denying that ADHD can impede success in school settings.

3. AUDITORY PROCESSING DISORDER/LANGUAGE PROCESSING DISORDER:

APD affects how sounds are processed and interpreted by the brain, advises WebMD. A person may not be able to recognize slight differences between the sounds in words and may not be able to distinguish the direction sounds are coming from. That’s challenging in a classroom setting. LPD is a form of APD that affects how one attaches meaning to sound groups that form words, sentences and so on. An audiologist can diagnose APD.

4. DYSCALCULIA:

LDRF says dyscalculia makes it challenging to understand even basic math-

ematical concepts, such as time, measuring and estimating. A person with dyscalculia may have difficulty following order of operations. And since math skills build on one another, a student quickly with dyscalculia can fall behind.

5. DYSGRAPHIA:

A person with dysgraphia may not be able to write legibly. He or she may take a long time to write, hold writing implements improperly and/or struggle with putting thoughts onto a page.

Additional symptoms of learning disorders include failing to tell left from right, difficulty recognizing patterns, lack of coordination, difficulty doing tasks with the hands, and challenges associated with concepts of time. Educators and health care providers often collaborate to help those with learning disabilities get the services they need to be successful in the classroom.

Learning disabilities occur due to neurobiological and/ or genetic factors that alter the way the brain functions.

A fresh way to beat the winter blues Find micro joys:

oliday celebrations are over and the weather outside is frightful, which can only mean one thing: the winter blues are officially here. Fortunately, you can kick those seasonal blahs to the curb with a simple practice – celebrating micro-moments of joy.

Micro joys are small, unplanned moments of happiness or appreciation that you experience throughout the day. Finding and celebrating these small moments can ultimately make a big difference in how you feel.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THINGS YOU LOVE

When you fill your space with items that make you happy, it will be easier to find joy in the tiny things. Celebrity designer Amanda Aerin is a big fan of using delightful décor to create a sanctuary at home. “Creating a space filled with beauty and meaningful treasures is a great way to lift your spirits.”

BE PRESENT

Living in the moment and taking time to appreciate small wins can help improve your mood and your mindset.

REFRESH YOUR HOME

Being grateful for your surroundings is a lot easier when your home is warm and cozy, so use a few tricks to brighten your mood if need be.

“For me, scent really helps boost my mood, so I use fabric spray everywhere from the pillow cushions to the carpet. It delivers a burst of freshness every time you touch it, and a whiff of that scent is the perfect pick-me-up,” says Aerin. ●

Starting at $995. Modern fully furnished 1–4 bedrooms suites. 6 appliances. Amenities: music studio, basketball court, art room, 10 study rooms, movie lounge and gym complex. For housing there is nothing like THEO in the heart of Ottawa.

1Eleven

Find the ultimate off-campus student living experience at 1Eleven – Ottawa’s favourite all-inclusive student apartments community! Enjoy premiums like the study lounge, gym/yoga room, concierge-style front desk, and more!

1Eleven is a short walk to the University of Ottawa, grocery stores, shops, and the Byward Market, and a quick bus ride to Carleton U.
