With snow and frosty temperatures in the weather forecast, many Canadians are dreaming about a warm-weather winter escape. However, the rising cost of living and higher interest rates make it challenging to budget for vacations. Here are some tips to help you plan and save for your next adventure:
Budgeting for a vacation can be difficult, but having a savings goal helps. Start by listing all your expenses and income to identify areas where you may be able to cut back and save. Try using a money management tool, such as TD’s MySpend, that can help you keep track of your spending. For example, if your anticipated trip will cost $4,000 and you have a year to save, the amount that you should consider setting aside is about $330 per month. Consider opening a dedicated savings account for your vacation and use a pre-authorized transfer service to automate your savings. Continue saving even after booking to help cover last-minute changes or spontaneous activities.
Being flexible with your travel dates and destinations can help save you money. The Christmas holiday and school spring break periods are the priciest times to book. Research the more affordable periods of the season for your desired destination. If your top choice is too expensive, consider other destinations that

may better fit your budget. Think about all-inclusive packages that cover food, drinks and lodging. If travelling with family or friends, try to determine which costs can be shared with them.
If you are a travel credit card holder, you could redeem your travel points you earned for flights, hotels and other travel-related expenses, which could help reduce your vacation costs. Remember to be cautious of vacation scams and only book through trustworthy sites.
Consider all potential costs, including activities, souvenirs and other expenses like service tips, visas and pet sitters if you need. If you’re planning an all-inclusive vacation, remember to account for incidentals, such as excursions and souvenirs. Don’t forget travel and medical insurance, and seriously consider including trip cancellation coverage.

Online shopping offers convenience, but also an array of options that can be overwhelming, and an added risk of fraud. Here are some simple steps you can take to make your experience smoother and safer:
This lets you compare options at a relaxed pace and helps you make
more confident decisions. Two things to look out for:
• Early bird specials that can help you get everything done ahead of schedule and below budget.
• Prices that go up right before big “sale” events to create the appearance of big discounts. Note the prices for items you’re interested in so that you know if you’re actually getting a deal when the sale begins.
In-person shopping may not be top of mind, but it can be rewarding. It supports businesses in your community, helps you find more unique gifts and allows you to buy from people you know you can trust.
Honest retailers still have to deal with the threat of fraudsters pre-

tending to be them and sending phishing messages to get people’s private information disguised as order notifications and delivery messages. Here are a couple of things you can do:
• If you get a fake message from a local business, let them know. It helps them step up their cybersecurity to keep everyone safe.
• Ask retailers if they use protective measures, like Mastercard’s
anti-fraud tools, which use artificial intelligence (AI) to spot and stop fraudulent transactions in real time. More fraudsters are using AI to enhance their scams, so AI-powered defence can be good protection.
For any online shopping, pay attention to how you are asked to

pay. Look for HTTPS or a padlock icon in the URL, which indicates a secure connection. Stick to businesses that use safe, secure payment methods like major credit cards or mobile wallets. If you’re ever unsure, don’t hesitate to reach out directly and ask the business how they’ll process your payment. Don’t complete any online transaction unless you’re confident it’s secure.
There’s a lot to watch out for during busy shopping times, but many businesses are taking steps to make the experience safe and easier. By practicing cyber safety, you can do your part, too. ■ — News Canada

Saving money, especially long-term savings, can be difficult. It’s tough to know where to begin or how to allocate money efficiently. Feeling like your financial plan is guesswork can be discouraging, but there are some simple steps you can take to get your savings on the right track:
start by developing a plan
Without clear goals and a roadmap for meeting them, you won’t be saving to your full potential. Outline what it is you’re saving for, and how far in the future. Be realistic with the targets you set – if the numbers aren’t adding up based on your current income, you may need to adjust your timeline.
There’s a great quote from Abraham Lincoln: “Give me six hours to chop down a tree, and I’ll spend the first four sharpening the axe.” Sharpen your savings axe by invest-
ing time in improving your financial literacy. There are courses and resources available for adult learners, like Money Matters, a free introductory financial literacy program. Taking a course can help you make more confident decisions when it comes to managing your money, and develop more efficient and effective savings strategies.
Like taking the time to educate yourself, paying down debt is a strategy that can help your savings in the long term. Paying down your principal – the amount you borrowed – reduces all your future interest payments, letting you put that money towards your goals instead.
Everyone’s needs and situations are different. Building a budget means looking at your circumstances honestly and setting priorities that will support you as you work
towards your goals. A good place to start is separating your expenses into needs and wants, and making sure the needs – basic expenses you can’t do without, such as shelter, food and water – are accounted for. Then you can budget for wants more confidently, knowing that you’ve got the essentials covered.
Your circumstances will change – income may rise or fall, you may have unexpected expenses or have to adjust for changing economic conditions. The amount of your budget that goes toward paying down debt may decrease when you’ve paid off more of your principal. Staying flexible and being willing to reassess your plan are important for making the most of your money and meeting your goals sooner.

Is prioritizing your health a goal this winter? Follow these tips for a healthier, happier season:
Transform your home into a cozy retreat from the cold. Adding fuzzy blankets, fleece pillows, scented candles and family photographs to your living space can help create a warm, welcoming environment to soothe your soul.
Exercise is great for your mind and body, and can strengthen your muscles and immune system. Winter sports like skiing, ice-skating or even snowboarding can be a fun and invigorating challenge
With low sunlight and cold weather, it’s easy for the winter blues to set in. A light therapy lamp can help supplement natural light, but remember to speak to a mental health therapist or physician if you need extra support.
Sleeping well is key to staying healthy. Try to keep good habits, like going to bed and waking up at the same time every day, even on weekends. It may sound obvious, but avoiding screens before bed
can help you get to and stay asleep. If you have trouble staying offline, use an app or timed lockbox to make sure you unplug.
Check in with your healthcare provider to make sure your tests and vaccines are all up to date. If you have a cough or feel the winter blues, speak to someone sooner than later to feel better faster. To see a doctor or nurse practitioner quickly and conveniently, try a virtual care platform like Maple. Connecting with a provider from home can help you stay on top of your health and tackle problems when they arise.
Fruits and veggies packed with nutrients, antioxidants and fibre can boost your energy and keep you feeling your best. Try new recipes featuring seasonal produce like sweet potatoes, winter squash, beets and apples.
Help prevent colds and flus by washing your hands regularly, coughing into your sleeve and carrying hand sanitizer with you when you’re on the go. Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces in your home, like doorknobs and light switches.

Visiting
your local farmers’ market is a great way to connect with the people who grow your food. It’s a chance to ask questions, try new products and support small businesses.
It’s now more important than ever to support the people who help bring food to your table: local farmers, producers, packagers and everyone in between. From bustling farmers’ markets to your local grocery store, there are many places and opportunities to show your Canadian pride.
Here are some tips to help you add more Canada to your plate:
Choose fresh produce that’s in season in your region. Not only is it the more eco-smart option, but it can be more affordable and flavourful. For example, in Ontario, the harvest season brings delicious local apples, pears, raspberries, corn and grapes. Check your provincial produce guide to see what’s currently in season near you.
Many of the brands you know and love may be part of proudly
Canadian parent companies. Looking beyond the label can help you get to know where your food comes from. There are Canadian-made options from producers like Maple Leaf Foods, who focus on sustainable, high-quality delicious offerings. When in doubt, look for the leaf symbol to confirm you’re shopping Canadian.
