Hitting the road is a key part of the warm months for many Canadians. In all the excitement, there’s one thing families often overlook: winter may be long over for us, but not for our vehicles.
The damage and stress that adds up over the course of a winter –sub-zero starts, road salt, hidden potholes, slush and temperature swings – can impact your vehicle well into the summer.
“We often see vehicles that feel like they’re running normally, but road stress often shows up later,” says Brian Mielko, the CEO of OK Tire. “It’s important to catch small issues early, before they become expensive or unsafe problems during peak driving season.”
According to Transport Canada, staying on top of tire maintenance improves your handling, braking distance and fuel economy and reduces your exhaust emissions. That’s why it’s important to get your tires checked regularly. If you haven’t yet switched from your winter tires to summer or all-season tires, it’s important to do so as soon as possible.
Some warning signs from your tires not to ignore:
• vibrations in the steering wheel
• pulling to one side
• squealing or grinding noises
• a loose or shaky feeling while driving

The vehicle technicians at OK Tire recommend families follow this road trip safety checklist:
• Check tire pressure and tread depth, as well as for cracks and signs of uneven wear.
• Test brakes and listen for unusual sounds.
• Inspect battery health, especially if the vehicle struggled to get started even once the previous winter.
• Check levels and top up washer fluid, break fluid, engine oil and coolant.
• Confirm headlights and brake lights are functioning.
• Restock your emergency kit, including first aid supplies, a flashlight and booster cables.
Tip: Book service appointments early. As temperatures rise, so does the demand for vehicle servicing. By booking yours now, you can avoid the pre-long-weekend rush and help ensure your vehicle’s road-ready before your travel plans begin.
By keeping on top of simple vehicle maintenance steps, you can lower your risk of a breakdown. Staying safe will help make sure that your family’s trip memories are made on the highway, not on the side of the road. ■

Did you know that, according to Public Safety Canada, flooding is the most common natural disaster in Canada? It’s also the most costly. There are simple steps you can take to better protect your home when water rises. Here are some tips from the prevention team at Intact Insurance:
It’s all about managing drainage. Any rain that falls on your home needs to be able to flow away freely. Check the grading around your home and make sure that it slopes downward away from your foundation for at least six feet. Your downspouts also need to empty out the same distance away. Otherwise, water can
sit against the foundation and weaken it over time. If it’s safe, clear nearby storm drains of debris, and clean your own eavestroughs regularly.
Indoor flood management comes down to two main things:
• Staying aware: Install flood alarms in your basement, near plumbing pipes or near appliances, and check them regularly to ensure they are in working order. Set up a regular schedule to check your pipes and plumbing fixtures for leaks. One trick is to dry off a set of pipes and put paper towel or printer paper under them for at least 12 hours to check for drips. Make sure to store any valuables in your home, or hazards like oil
containers, at least 30 centimetres above the floor.
• Checking your equipment: Consider installing a backwater valve and sump pump if you don’t already have them. Even if you don’t have a basement, floodwater can still accumulate in the crawlspace and damage your foundation. Set up a schedule to clean out your flood drain and backwater valve and test the sump pump twice a year. By making sure they have the right equipment inside and proper drainage outside, Canadian households can be much better prepared for flooding risk. For many Canadians, gardening is a treasured pastime. It’s a great opportunity to get outside in the sun, get your hands dirty and create something that you can watch grow and thrive. But did you know that some of your yard activities can actually help protect your home?
Here are some tips for gardening that can keep your home safer from extreme weather events, including flooding and wildfires, from the prevention team at Intact Insurance:
Low-growing shrubs are a fireresistant choice, especially when planted spread apart so that flames can’t jump from shrub to shrub. Don’t put any large plants within 1.5 metres of your home. This helps
create a fire break. Coniferous trees, such as pines, are especially flammable, so keep them at least 10 metres from your home.
It’s important to deny fire the opportunity to spread, especially upward. Keep your grass trimmed under 10 centimetres, and prune any branches on trees that are lower than two metres off the ground. Be mindful of any high branches that reach your roof because that’s the part of your home that’s most vulnerable to fire. Trim any of those branches that you can reach safely.
To create one, dig a depression or ditch about 85 centimetres deep,
and at least five metres away from your foundation. Once you’re done digging, backfill it with rain garden soil mix, usually made of compost and sand, to a depth of around 60 centimetres. Remember: the rain garden should be sunken into the ground to allow it to capture water. To prevent erosion, line the edge with large stones that won’t blow around in a strong wind. Plant local shrubs and grasses in the depression, and let rain runoff fill the ditch and feed the plants.
Gardening is often its own pleasure, and by using that time to also protect your home, you’ll be planting seeds that will benefit you for years to come. You can find more tips to help protect your home from extreme weather events at keepitintact.ca. ■ — News Canada
