things to review during your spring reset 3

One reason many of us look forward to spring is its sense of renewal.

Nature starts to reawaken all around us, and there can be a sense that we’re waking up with it. This time of year is the perfect opportunity to re-examine the things that may not always be top of mind. Here are three areas to get started with:

1. Your routines

A good first step for your reset is taking a look at your calendar. Go day by day, noting what each one usually looks like – for example, consider what you do in the morning or with any breaks you have, what meal prep looks like and how you wind down in the evening. Ask yourself if there are things you want to be doing but don’t have time for, as well as if there are portions of your days that aren’t either happy

or productive. Those may be good places to make a change.

2. Your expenses

So many services and even product deliveries use subscription models now that it’s easy to lose track. Many have low monthly costs, but together they can really add up. Take the opportunity to sit down and look at them all at once. Try treating them as if they’re services you don’t currently have and ask yourself which ones you’d want to add. This can keep you from skipping over regular expenses you’ve had for a while and may be taken for granted.

3. Your telecom services

For many of us, internet, TV and phone services are “set it and forget it” items. But by not reviewing them regularly, you could be paying

for something you don’t use or miss out on something you’re owed. A spring reset gives an opportunity to re-evaluate what services you have and what you’re getting from them.

If you find an issue, such as overbilling, a service you were promised but wasn’t delivered or another contract issue, you can contact your service provider to fix it. If they don’t, you still have options, such as filing a complaint with the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS). They’re an independent agency that handles unresolved wireless, TV, phone and internet service issues from thousands of Canadians each year. You can learn more at letsstayconnected.ca.

By taking a closer look at the things that can easily fade into the background, you can make your spring reset a truly fresh start. ■

A simple guide to digital spring cleaning

Your online accounts and services may not have physical drawers to go through, but that doesn’t mean you can’t tidy them up. Springtime is a great opportunity to get things in order, and digital file cleanup is no exception. Here are some tips to get you started:

Update passwords and account details

It’s a good idea to change passwords regularly instead of relying on them for long periods. When you’re coming up with them, here are some pointers:

• Use a different password for every account, in case one gets compromised.

• Make them hard to guess, but easy to remember – try longer passwords or passphrases with just a couple of numbers or special characters sprinkled in.

• Be cautious with password managers. Data breaches do happen, and having all your eggs in one basket could compromise multiple passwords.

Organize important documents and receipts

The spring season is also tax time, so it’s a good opportunity to go through any receipts and documents you have lying around. You can also check your internet, phone or TV service contracts to make sure

Don’t be afraid to make cuts, and don’t forget that you have the right to have complaints addressed.

you’re getting everything that you were promised. If you spot a problem, you can reach out to your provider to get them to fix it.

You have options if they don’t resolve the complaint to your satisfaction, such as going to the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS). They’re an independent agency that handles unresolved internet, TV, phone and wireless service issues from thousands of Canadians each year.

Reduce unused or forgotten services

Many online services work by auto-renewing, so it’s possible that you’re paying for things you don’t use anymore. Take stock of your entire list – don’t forget to check your banking and credit card statements for regular charges. For each one, take the time to consider if it’s something you still actively want. If it’s not, let it go.

Spring cleaning is a chance to take charge of your space, and the same is true for your digital space. Don’t be afraid to make cuts, and don’t forget that you have the right to have complaints addressed. You can learn more about resolving issues with your telecom provider at letsstayconnected.ca.■ — News Canada

A quick guide to spring cleaning your finances

With the weather finally starting to warm up, it’s time for sunshine, new blooms and spring cleaning. We bring a fresh start to the season each year by taking the time to tidy our homes, so why not include finances too? Planning can bring a sense of comfort and peace of mind. Here are four quick tips to get you started:

Out with the old, in with the new

Just like when you tidy your closet, start your financial cleaning by taking stock. Ask yourself whether your current financial products are meeting your needs or if there are better options available. As just one example, if you’d prefer a lowrisk investment that you know will provide a return, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) may be a good choice. It guarantees a specific interest rate while you own it, and the repayment of your initial

investment once the GIC’s term has ended.

Find storage solutions

Consider what you want your future to look like to help determine how best to store your assets, then organize them into different accounts for specific purposes. For example, one way to prepare for life after your career is with a taxdeferred Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP). Or, if you want to open an account to save for post-secondary education, then a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP) may work best for your family. The key is to organize your assets in a way that suits your needs.

Brush up on how your money is protected

Once everything’s set up the way you like it, you’ll want to make sure your money is safe. You can find out how your deposits are protected through online tools like the Cana-

Consider what you want your future to look like to help determine how best to store your assets, then organize them into different accounts for specific purposes.

da Deposit Insurance Corporation’s (CDIC) online calculator. This organization protects eligible deposits, like GICs and other term deposits, money in savings or chequing accounts and foreign currency, in the unlikely event of a bank failure. There are several categories of protection covering a variety of savings options, including RRSPs and RESPs, and each is protected up to $100,000.

Stay organized

To make organizing and tracking your finances easier, consider setting your accounts to automatically transfer specific amounts of money from one account to another, which can help make saving money and paying bills simpler and worryfree. Spreadsheets and other online financial programs, like the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada’s financial goal calculator and budget planner, can also be useful in tracking your spending habits and your progress toward your savings goals.
