4 ways to strengthen your finances

Before you dive into budgeting or investing, have a clear goal in mind. Whether you’re looking to build a better investment strategy to encourage generational wealth, or create a plan that will help launch a business, having an end goal in mind will help guide your financial decisions and keep you focused.

Knowing that the advice you’re receiving is being shared by someone you trust, and who is cognizant of your cultural background can lead to greater confidence in the institution you’re putting your trust in.

plan for the future

Building wealth isn’t only about growing your net worth—it’s about creating a lasting sense of security. Establish an emergency fund that can cover several months of expenses, invest in assets that fit your risk tolerance, and regularly review your progress. By staying proactive, you can adapt to life’s changes while protecting the financial well-being you’ve worked hard to achieve.

consider expert advice

Working with a financial advisor can offer peace of mind, especially if you’re navigating complex decisions like investing, retirement planning, or launching a new venture. Look for professionals who respect your personal values and long-term vision.

look for a bank that works with you

For some, finding a financial institution that can understand the unique financial experience faced by

some cultural groups can be a gamechanger. Within the Black Customer Experience Strategy at TD, the bank has developed programs and teams to serve the banking needs of Black communities.

“Canadians in Black communities, like everyone across the country, want trusted financial advice, but the advice each of us needs is unique to our own financial situation, goals, lived experiences and the communities we are a part of,” Obed Boateng, Greater Ontario regional manager of Black customer experience at TD says. “Knowing that the advice you’re receiving is being shared by someone you trust, and who is cognizant of your cultural background can lead to greater confidence in the institution you’re putting your trust in.”

Your financial journey is deeply personal, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. By focusing on your goals, planning for the future, seeking help and finding an institution that best fits your needs, you could build lasting stability and success. ■ — News Canada

tips on how to help save for your next vacation

As summer is in full swing, Canadians are planning their yearly vacations, looking forward to the travel season. However, the rising cost of living and higher interest rates make it challenging to budget for vacations. Here are some tips to help you plan and save for your next adventure:

create a travel fund

Budgeting for a vacation can be difficult, but having a savings goal helps. Start by listing all your expenses and income to identify areas where you may be able to cut back and save. Try using a money management tool, such as TD’s MySpend, that can help you keep track of your spending. For example, if your anticipated trip will cost $4,000 and you have a year to save, the amount that you should consider setting aside is about $330 per month. Consider opening a dedicated savings account for your vacation and use a pre-authorized transfer service to automate your savings. Continue saving even after booking to help cover last-minute changes or spontaneous activities.

search for deals and be flexible

Being flexible with your travel dates and destinations can help save you money. Research the

most affordable times of year to visit your desired destination. If your top choice is too expensive, consider other destinations that may better fit your budget. Think about all-inclusive packages that cover food, drinks and lodging. If travelling with family or friends, try to determine which costs can be shared with them.

leverage travel points

If you are a travel credit card holder, you could redeem your travel points you earned for flights, hotels and other travel-related expenses, which could help reduce your vacation costs. Remember to be cautious of vacation scams and only book through trustworthy sites.

factor in all costs

Consider all potential costs, including activities, souvenirs and other expenses like service tips, visas and pet sitters if you need. If you’re planning an all-inclusive vacation, remember to account for incidentals, such as excursions and souvenirs. Don’t forget travel and medical insurance, and seriously consider including trip cancellation coverage.

Planning a vacation can be costly and stressful but with careful budgeting and the right tools, your dream getaway can become a reality. ■

summer road trip: 5 tips to get your vehicle ready

The destination is set, the route planned out and playlist sorted – but before you pack up and leave on that summer road trip, don’t forget to ensure your vehicle is ready. After all, car trouble can stop your trip right in its tracks. Ensure smooth sailing on your next adventure by following these tips.

check your tires

Before heading out, check the condition and inflation pressure of all four tires. Adjusting inflation pressure to proper levels helps your car handle better and achieve better fuel mileage. Also, take a look at your spare tire to ensure it isn’t flat or damaged.

prep your windshield and wipers

Clean your windshield inside and out to ensure a clear view of the road. Top up windshield washer fluid with a quality, summer-

rated product and make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition.

change your oil

Changing your vehicle’s motor oil before a road trip ensures optimal engine performance, prevents overheating and increases fuel efficiency, making your journey smoother and more reliable. Look for a quality product, like Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic motor oil, to maximize your engine protection and help extend your engine’s life.

clean air filters

A blocked or clogged engine air filter will decrease performance, lead to poor fuel economy and possibly lead to more serious engine trouble. Check that it is clean or replace it with a fresh, new one for improved performance and reduced fuel consumption. Check the cabin air filter to keep your AC working in good order.

The destination is set, the route planned out and playlist sorted – but before you pack up and leave on that summer road trip, don’t forget to ensure your vehicle is ready.

test your battery

Testing your car battery before your summer travels is an excellent way to maximize peace of mind. If the battery in your car doesn’t pass the test, it may be time for a replacement.

Tip: Motor oil manufacturers, like Pennzoil, often have promotions available for you to take advantage of. Always check the company’s website before you buy. ■
