Your vehicle safety and performance guide for road trip season

Hitting the road is a key part of the warm months for many Canadians. In all the excitement, there’s one thing families often overlook: winter may be long over for us, but not for our vehicles.

The damage and stress that adds up over the course of a winter – subzero starts, road salt, hidden potholes, slush and temperature swings – can impact your vehicle well into the summer.

“We often see vehicles that feel like they’re running normally, but road stress often shows up later,” says Brian Mielko, the CEO of OK Tire. “It’s important to catch small issues early, before they become expensive or unsafe problems during peak driving season.”

Start with your tires

According to Transport Canada, staying on top of tire maintenance improves your handling, braking distance and fuel economy and reduces your exhaust emissions. That’s why it’s important to get your tires checked regularly. If you haven’t yet switched from your winter tires to summer or all-season tires, it’s important to do so as soon as possible.

Some warning signs from your tires not to ignore:

• vibrations in the steering wheel

• pulling to one side

• squealing or grinding noises

• a loose or shaky feeling while driving

Do a safety check at home

The vehicle technicians at OK Tire recommend families follow this road trip safety checklist:

• Check tire pressure and tread depth, as well as for cracks and signs of uneven wear.

• Test brakes and listen for unusual sounds.

• Inspect battery health, especially if the vehicle struggled to get started even once the previous winter.

• Check levels and top up washer fluid, break fluid, engine oil and coolant.

• Confirm headlights and brake lights are functioning.

• Restock your emergency kit, including first aid supplies, a flashlight and booster cables.

Tip: Book service appointments early. As temperatures rise, so does the demand for vehicle servicing. By booking yours now, you can avoid the pre-long-weekend rush and help ensure your vehicle’s road-ready before your travel plans begin.

By keeping on top of simple vehicle maintenance steps, you can lower your risk of a breakdown. Staying safe will help make sure that your family’s trip memories are made on the highway, not on the side of the road. ■

How you can keep your home safer… by gardening

For many Canadians, gardening is a treasured pastime. It’s a great opportunity to get outside in the sun, get your hands dirty and create something that you can watch grow and thrive. But did you know that some of your yard activities can actually help protect your home?

Here are some tips for gardening that can keep your home safer from extreme weather events, including flooding and wildfires, from the prevention team at Intact Insurance:

Choose your plants to resist fire

Low-growing shrubs are a fire-resistant choice, especially when planted spread apart so that flames can’t jump from shrub to shrub. Don’t put any large plants within 1.5 metres of your home. This helps create a fire break. Coniferous trees, such as pines, are especially flammable, so keep them at least 10 metres from your home.

Trim, trim, trim

It’s important to deny fire the opportunity to spread, especially upward. Keep your grass trimmed under 10 centimetres, and prune any branches on trees that are lower than two metres off the ground. Be mindful of any high branches that reach your roof because that’s the part of your home that’s most vulnerable to

fire. Trim any of those branches that you can reach safely.

A rain garden looks lovely and can make a difference

To create one, dig a depression or ditch about 85 centimetres deep, and at least five metres away from your foundation. Once you’re done digging, backfill it with rain garden soil mix, usually made of compost and sand, to a depth of around 60 centimetres. Remember: the rain garden should be sunken into the ground

to allow it to capture water. To prevent erosion, line the edge with large stones that won’t blow around in a strong wind. Plant local shrubs and grasses in the depression, and let rain runoff fill the ditch and feed the plants.

Gardening is often its own pleasure, and by using that time to also protect your home, you’ll be planting seeds that will benefit you for years to come. You can find more tips to help protect your home from extreme weather events at keepitintact.ca. ■ — News Canada

3 easy ways to reduce household waste this year

Anew year is often a time to rethink everyday habits, including how much waste we produce at home. Without realizing it, household waste can add up quickly. Making a few small, intentional changes can help reduce what ends up in the garbage while making daily routines more efficient. Here are three easy ways to cut down on waste at home.

Cook smarter, not harder

Having to throw out expired ingredients feels especially wasteful, since you didn’t even get to enjoy them. Managing your stock and meal planning are the keys to minimizing food waste, but can be difficult to keep up with in a busy schedule. Smart kitchen appliances, like Samsung’s Bespoke AI options, can help you with that. A smart fridge can scan the items inside to keep track of what you have. It can even suggest recipes based on what’s there to make sure you’re using what you have.

Be more critical of your packaging

Great things don’t always come in small packages. When buying items, factor in how much plastic they use, and shift your decisions accordingly. Avoid buying the smallest size of an item, especially if it’s a liquid that comes in plastic, like dish soap. Larger containers use less material and will last you longer. Consider using small dispensers for those items

at home, and refill them from larger containers that you can store out of the way.

Reuse, repurpose

It’s almost impossible to eliminate plastic packaging from your food and other home goods. But just because a manufacturer intended a container to be single use doesn’t mean it has to be. There are lots of ways to give “disposable” items new leases on life. Save plastic bags for when you have something that shouldn’t go in your regular garbage, like a chicken carcass or fish skin. Many takeout containers can be washed and repurposed for leftovers or even storage. Eliminating waste comes down to building the right habits and sticking

to them. When you put your wastecutting tricks into practice, with the help of the right technology, you’ll see the results add up over time –that’s something you can feel good about.
