F

rom backyard barbecues to patio candles and firepits, summer is full of reasons to gather outside. A few simple precautions can help make sure the good times keep going all season long. Here’s what to keep in mind:

Keep and maintain a fire extinguisher

Cooking is the most common cause of fires in the home, accounting for about one-third, according to Statistics Canada. A recent survey for insurance provider Belairdirect found that only about half of Canadians have a fire extinguisher near

their kitchen. An extinguisher rated “ABC” can handle wood, gas and electrical fires, making it a solid allaround choice for home use. Make sure you know how to use it properly and don’t forget to set a reminder each year to check if you need to have it serviced or replaced.

Cook smart

The best way to deal with a cooking fire is to keep it from happening: •N ever leave cooking unattended, indoors or outdoors. • For propane barbecues: make sure all the connections are secure, check for leaks and clear the air in-

Even small devices can pose a significant risk in the event of a short circuit or electrical failure. Here are some things to keep in mind: • Unplug devices and small appliances when you’re not using them. • Check for frayed wires whenever you plug something in. • Avoid overloading power bars – spread devices across multiple rooms whenever possible. • Store lithium-ion batteries away from heat and direct sunlight.

Know your way out

It’s important to make sure everyone in your home has a plan if the fire alarm goes off. Pick a meeting spot outside and run through it together a couple of times a year – it only takes a few minutes and gives the whole household peace of mind. Fire safety comes down to simple habits, but they can make all the difference. You can learn more about keeping yourself and your home safe at belairdirect.com. ■ — News Canada

things to review during your summer reset

August 14–September 11, 2026

15

O

THE VIEW

ne reason many of us look forward to summer is its sense of renewal. Nature starts to blossom all around us, and there can be a sense that we’re waking up with it. This time of year is the perfect opportunity to re-examine the things that may not always be top of mind. Here are three areas to get started with:

By taking a closer look at the things that can easily fade into the background, you can make your summer reset a truly fresh start.

1. Your routines

3. Your telecom services

A good first step for your reset is taking a look at your calendar. Go day by day, noting what each one usually looks like – for example, consider what you do in the morning or with any breaks you have, what meal prep looks like and how you wind down in the evening. Ask yourself if there are things you want to be doing but don’t have time for, as well as if there are portions of your days that aren’t either happy or productive. Those may be good places to make a change.

2. Your expenses

So many services and even product deliveries use subscription models now that it’s easy to lose track. Many have low monthly costs, but together they can really add up. Take the opportunity to sit down and look at them all at once. Try treating them as if they’re services you don’t currently have and ask yourself which ones you’d want to add. This can keep you from skipping over regular expenses you’ve had for a while and may be taken for granted.

For many of us, internet, TV and phone services are “set it and forget it” items. But by not reviewing them regularly, you could be paying for something you don’t use or miss out on something you’re owed. A spring reset gives an opportunity to re-evaluate what services you have and what you’re getting from them. If you find an issue, such as overbilling, a service you were promised but wasn’t delivered or another contract issue, you can contact your service provider to fix it. If they don’t, you still have options, such as filing a complaint with the Commission for Complaints for Telecom-television Services (CCTS). They’re an independent agency that handles unresolved wireless, TV, phone and internet service issues from thousands of Canadians each year. You can learn more at letsstayconnected.ca. By taking a closer look at the things that can easily fade into the background, you can make your summer reset a truly fresh start. ■ — News Canada

MOVING TIPS

18

Moving to university/college residence or new home requires smart Chuck Resnick

F

BY CHUCK RESNICK

organization & planning

or many university or community college students, a new school means a new place to live. Moving away from home for the first time can be a stressful change. However, taking a few painless steps can make the transition to the new “home away from home” go more smoothly. Moving children to their university or college of choice for the first time can leave parents and their student children physically and emotionally drained, if unprepared. It’s easy to get frustrated when faced with packing and condensing belongings which will ultimately have to fit in a small room shared by one to three other people. Here are seven tips for parents and students to make the process easier:

Don’t over-pack boxes

Remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box. Use original packaging for large electronics when possible – the safest way to transport electronics like a computer, TV, mini-fridge or a microwave is to use the original packaging. If it’s not available, wrap the electronics in anti-static bubble wrap.

Try to condense

Go through the new student’s belongings before packing. Reduce the amount of items to move to start the school year clutter-free.

Use the right supplies

Shop around for competitive prices on supplies. Avoid using old shopping bags, laundry baskets or topless boxes to transport belongings. Items can get tossed around during the move and if loose items fall out, people can get hurt. Also, beware of using grocery store boxes – they stored food and may carry bugs.

Pack similar items together

Label the boxes so they are easily identified. This will help the student prioritize unpacking without making a huge mess.

Start early

Don’t wait until the last minute to collect boxes and moving supplies. Start packing non-essential items immediately, such as seasonal clothing. Clearly label all boxes so unpacking is easy.

Recycle

Buying reusable supplies like high-quality containers is good for parents’ wallets and for the environment. Most corrugated cardboard boxes can be easily folded and stored during the school year. Plastic storage bins with lids are also a good option. The containers parents buy this year can be reused and recycled throughout their student’s university career. ■

How to enjoy this summer’s events

without overheating T

he summer is a time to enjoy life outdoors, especially outdoor events that can be the highlight of the year. But it’s also important to enjoy summer safely. Extreme heat poses a real health risk, and crowded outdoor events can be challenging places to stay cool and hydrated. Here are some things to keep in mind to stay safe while enjoying your summer:

Look out for heat illness

Heat illnesses can affect you quickly and are mainly caused by overexposure to heat or overexertion in the heat. It can be easy to miss the signs at an outdoor event because of all the excitement, noise and people, so it’s important to be familiar with them. Signs and symptoms of heat illness include: • dizziness or fainting • nausea or vomiting • headache • extreme thirst • unusually rapid breathing and heartbeat If you experience any of these symptoms during extreme heat, immediately move to a cool place and drink water. While waiting for help, cool the person right away by: • Moving them to a cool place. • Directly applying cold water to the person’s skin or clothing. • Fanning the person as much as possible.

4Rent.ca

August 14–September 11, 2026

Never leave people or pets in your care inside a parked vehicle or in direct sunlight. Even on cooler days when the outside temperatures are moderate, the temperature inside a vehicle can be dangerously hot.

How to stay cool

Drink plenty of water before you feel thirsty. Thirst isn’t a good indicator of dehydration. By the time you feel thirsty, you’re already dehydrated. •D rink plenty of water before, during and after being physically active. •W ear loose-fitting, light-coloured clothing made of breathable fabric.

• Increase your comfort by splashing yourself with cold water. Before going to an event, tune in to local weather forecasts and alerts so that you know when to take extra care. Reschedule or plan outdoor activities during cooler parts of the day. Choose a cooler location, like a place with air conditioning or a spot with shade, such as from a tree. By understanding the risks and signs of heat-related illnesses at outdoor events, you can set yourself up to enjoy them more safely this summer. Learn more at canada.ca/heat. ■ — News Canada
