FATHER’S

DAY BONDING

Father-child bonding activities are not just recreational moments, they are opportunities for meaningful connections and lifelong memories. Engaging in activities together fosters mutual understanding, strengthens relationships, and builds a solid foundation for the child’s emotional and cognitive development. Here are several activities that fathers can enjoy with their children, regardless of age or interests.

Outdoor adventures:

Whether it’s a hike in the woods, a camping trip, or a day at the beach, outdoor adventures offer ample opportunities for fathers and children to bond. Exploring nature together not only promotes physical health but also instills a sense of wonder and appreciation for the world around them.

Fishing:

Spend a day out on the water either at a local pond, lake, or on a fishing boat. Fishing teaches patience, perseverance, and appreciation for the environment. As they wait for the fish to bite, it’s a perfect opportunity to engage in heartfelt conversations, share stories, and enjoy the tranquility of their surroundings.

Golf:

Golf is an inclusive sport suitable for all ages and skill levels, making it perfect for fathers and children to enjoy together. Practicing at the driving range, playing mini-golf, or hitting the course, golf fosters bonding and friendly competition. Fathers can teach valuable lessons in sportsmanship, integrity, and focus, while children learn the rewards of practice and perseverance.

Sports and games:

Attending or playing sports games together is a fantastic way for fathers to bond with their children while also teaching them valuable lessons such as teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience. Whether it’s shooting hoops, kicking a soccer ball, or playing board games, these activities encourage friendly competition and laughter. You might even consider heading to the ballpark together to catch a game.

Volunteering and giving back:

Engaging in acts of kindness and community service such as Habitat for Humanity teaches children the importance of empathy, compassion, and social responsibility. Fathers and children can volunteer at local charities, participate in cleanup events, or organize donation drives together, making a positive impact on the world while strengthening their bond.

Cooking and baking:

Cooking together not only teaches children valuable life skills but also provides an opportunity for quality time and bonding. Fathers and children can experiment with new recipes, bake cookies, or even have a friendly cooking competition. The joy of creating something delicious together is unparalleled.

The activities fathers can enjoy with their kids are limitless. What matters most is the time spent together, creating unforgettable memories, and nurturing a strong, loving relationship that will last a lifetime.

boredom busters FUN WAYS TO KEEP KIDS OCCUPIED OVER SUMMER BREAK

Kids look forward to summer vacation every year. The last day of school gives way to less structured days when kids can spend more time outdoors and less time cracking the books.

Summer vacation can be a dilemma for parents, especially in households where both parents work full-time. A pandemic-related increase in remote working has made that problem somewhat more manageable, but even parents working from home must find fun way for kids to stay occupied until the new school year begins. No two kids are the same, so parents may need to try various activities on for size until they find something their children enjoy doing during the lazy days of summer.

Day camp:

Day camps provide much of the structure of school without all the homework or time spent indoors. Many parks and recreation departments run summer day camps for kids. Camps can be generalized or specialized. For example, some may offer an array of activities, including sports and nature walks, while others

may focus on a single activity, like musical lessons or science-based programs. Camps run by local parks and rec departments do not typically last all summer long, which parents should keep in mind when enrolling youngsters.

Reading:

Parents may be surprised by how much their children enjoy a good book. A recent poll from the National Education Association found that 70 per cent of middle school students

read more than 10 books a year. The National Literacy Trust reports that roughly 45 per cent of children between the ages of eight and 11 enjoy reading “very much.” When suggesting to children that they read more this summer, parents can note the many ways that reading for pleasure differs from reading for school.

Play dates:

Play dates are a great way to make kids happy and take a little off

parents’ daily plate. Arrange routine summer play dates with children’s school friends, neighbors and/or cousins. Parents can alternate hosting responsibilities so they can get work done at home and enjoy a break when it’s not their turn to host.

Find something free:

Perhaps in recognition of the need for affordable, family-friendly fare, many communities now host free events for kids and their parents each week. Weekly movie nights under the stars and concerts in community squares are popular in many communities, but those same towns also may host events specifically for kids during the daytime. A simple internet search of “free events near me” may unveil a host of activities that can keep kids happy and occupied on summer days when their schedules are open. Local libraries can be great resources for free events as well.

Summer vacation is a relaxing time for youngsters. Parents who don’t want that relaxation to turn into boredom can look to various activities to occupy their children’s time until a new school year begins.

bébé SKINCARE LINE FOR BABIES

The freshly certified organic skincare regimen by the laboratories of KLORANE

bébé promotes the equilibrium of a baby’s skin microbiome, starting from birth and throughout their initial 1,000 days of life, with the newly certified organic skincare regimen.

KLORANE introduces a new ORGANIC baby skincare line crafted with expert botanical knowledge. Our Klorane bébé range, featuring ORGANIC calendula, offers effective, certified organic formulas, made in France with at least 99% natural-origin ingredients. We’re committed to your baby’s safety and comfort by soothing irritation, moisturizing, repairing the skin barrier, and supporting skin health. During the first 1,000 days of development, your baby’s skin is fragile and lacks full defense mechanisms. It offers limited protection against dehydration, germs, irritants, and pollutants until around age four when their barrier matures. With a pH close to neutral at birth, your baby’s skin is especially sensitive to external factors. Therefore, choosing safe skincare products tailored to this vulnerability is vital. well.ca

get creative SUMMER CRAFTS FAMILIES CAN ENJOY TOGETHER

Things seem to slow down in summer. Come summer, the hurried pace that dominates much of the year takes a backseat to vacations, lounging around the pool, diving through ocean waves, and setting up tents at campsites near or far.

When the weather is accommodating, there’s a seemingly endless list of ways to enjoy time spent outdoors. But as everyone knows, Mother Nature tends to be a bit unpredictable during the hazy days of summer. Thunderstorms can roll in quite suddenly, or rain may persist for a few days as the atmosphere attempts to right itself after an abundance of steamy days. Keep a list of craft ideas at the ready to make the most of time spent inside or out. The following are a few ideas.

Friendship bracelets:

There have been different iterations of friendship bracelets for every generation. With some general craft supplies, such as embroidery thread, beads, plastic lanyards, or other jewelry-making materials, kids can make and share a variety of friendship bracelets.

Seashell creatures:

At the next beach excursion, pick up differently shaped shells. They can be painted and glued together to resemble different animals or whatever designs one can imagine.

Dreamcatchers:

With some twigs, yarn and feathers, crafters can make dreamcatchers to hang bedside.

Sun prints:

Check out the craft store for a special light-sensitive solution that can be painted onto thick craft paper. Set

various natural items on top (such as fern boughs, shells, feathers, and more) and let the sun do its work.

You’ll ultimately be left with some beautiful silhouettes.

Leather sewing kits:

Evoke the feelings of summer camp right at home with leather sewing

kits that enable everyone to make handcrafted leather wallets or small purses.

Painted stones:

Kids can have fun gathering smooth pebbles from trails or at the shores of lakes. They can be painted with various designs or sweet

sentiments, only to be left around the neighborhood for others to discover.

Sea glass jewelry:

An adult can use a very thin drill bit to make holes in sea glass remnants that washed up on beaches. Feed through earring hooks or chains to create one-of-a-kind jewelry.

Dyed shoes or accessories:

Use commercially produced or homemade dyes made from teabags, berry juice, turmeric powder, or more to colour certain items. Dress up canvas sneakers with summertime hues or make colourful bandanas to help keep you cool.

Summer craft ideas abound to keep everyone entertained all season long.

A CUT ABOVE: AVALON LAVENDER FARM

When you think about lavender, it’s the sun-kissed hills of France that springs to mind. But you don’t have to go nearly so far away to enjoy the delicate scents and heavenly hues of this purple herb that heralds the start of summer. Instead, head to Mono Hills and newly opened Avalon Lavender Farm. Here, on a sunny summer day, you’ll find owner Dawn Rebel hard at work among the 31,000 lavender plants, enjoying the soothing floral smell that carries on the warm breeze. “We’re really looking forward to welcoming the public because it will represent the fruition of our dream,” she explains.

Neither Dawn nor her husband have any agricultural background prior to embarking on the journey of establishing what is now Ontario’s largest lavender farm. She was in political communications, he in law. “We moved here in 2019 so that we and our children would be closer to nature,” Dawn explains. “I make a lot of my own products and love lavender, so the idea of a lavender farm sort of organically evolved.”

JUST THE FACTS

347036 Mono Centre Road, Mono

$17, kids under 10 free. Tickets must be pre-booked through the website

avalonlavenderfarm.ca avalonlavenderfarm@gmail.com

After several years of slowly watching the lavender develop into lush, purple shrubs, Dawn is eager for guests to finally descend on the farm. People can walk the fields on self-guided tours, enjoying the sights and smells while reading signage that describes the seven varieties of lavender grown on site and their myriad uses. Extend your meandering by strolling along the sedate shores of the Nottawasaga River.

A focal point of Avalon is the restored two-story 1891 Heritage Barn, which serves as a boutique selling products made with farmgrown lavender such as candles, hand soaps, and teas. Children,

conversely, will be drawn to the barnyard animals, including six rescue horses and ponies (“each with their own unique personalities,” Dawn laughs), free range hens, and a flock of ducks with their own river-side cottage.

Avalon hosts a calendar of events throughout the summer, including family-friendly markets with local vendors and live music;

curated workshops, such as a ‘cut your own’ experience where one leaves with a lavender bouquet for drying; and field yoga in a Celticstyle stone circle reminiscent of those found in the glens of Scotland (‘the circle is made with rocks found around the property and is an homage to my Scottish roots,’ Dawn explains).

There’s enough at Avalon to keep you enthralled for an entire afternoon. Which is exactly the idea. “The goal is for people to linger and deepen their own connection to nature,” Dawn explains. Times are booked in advance to ensure the experience isn’t ruined by a mass of visitors. Fields of sun-kissed purple under azure summers skies –Avalon Lavender Farm begs to be explored. But at soothing pace.

COMKIDS IS HELPING TO EMPOWER STUDENTS BY BRIDGING LEARNING AND DIGITAL GAPS

Internet and computer access are essential for student learning not only in the classroom but at home as well. Yet for many low to moderate income families, these tools have become a luxury they can’t afford. Currently, over a million households in Canada don’t have adequate internet service or computers.

ComKids is an Ontario based charitable organization that is committed to bridging the education gaps. This nomination based program provides enrolled students with laptops, internet access if needed, and digital literacy workshops so students have the tools and knowledge they need to empower themselves and increase their chances of success.

How the Program Works

National and community education partners in underserved communities support ComKids in the selection of students for the program. All the nominated students go through a screening process before ComKids staff choose the final participants. Once a student is selected for the program, they are given a laptop.

While in the program, each student is mentored until the end of grade 12 and expected to meet certain criteria and submission deadlines. They must attend five lunchtime Master Class sessions that cover a variety of topics including how to send online applications to schools, employers, bursaries and grants, and write emails, how to protect themselves from scams and hackers, and community citizenship. Students also have to

submit a creative assignment done on their laptop before the end of their first year with the program.

Established in 1998, ComKids has helped over 10,000 students in grade school and as they expand into high school. The program is more than just giving students a laptop. By closing the education gap, ComKids empowers students and helps build their confidence. It nurtures their creativity and improves many essential skills like communication and problem solving.

Tina D has first hand knowledge of how important and beneficial the ComKids program is. Raised by a single parent, Tina was nominated for the program by her school when she was 12 years old. The laptop she received not only helped her with her schooling, it also helped her mom,

who was a nursing student at the time.

Having adequate internet and technology at home rather than an old dial up system helped her feel like she was equal to her peers. It also gave her more confidence and showed her that she had more potential than she thought.

If she hadn’t been in the program, she believes she would have still followed her mom’s footprints and become a nurse, but Tina knows that without ComKids, her secondary and post secondary education would have been a lot more difficult and stressful because she faced many challenges and hurdles when she didn’t have the laptop and internet access she received from ComKids.

She believes that kids who don’t have access to common luxuries

are more resilient and learn to find other ways to achieve their goals. She wants today’s students to know they shouldn’t give up or be afraid to ask for help. They should be ambitious and always reach for their dreams.

She also advises educators to be culturally sensitive and consider each student’s ethnicity, culture, and family size when offering them resources. It’s important to teach students how to use the internet and a laptop safely so they can navigate through their schooling and life.

Now a travel nurse, Tina is grateful for being one of the chosen students and for the opportunities it gave her. She found the Master Class sessions to be lifechanging and the information still relevant and useful. She volunteers and attends ComKids fundraisers when she has time.
