TO ALL YOU MOTHERS OUT THERE – DON’T FORGET YOUR SELF-CARE!

Balancing the demands of motherhood with self-care is an ongoing journey that many of us navigate with varying degrees of success. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to prioritize the needs of our children and families above our own, often neglecting our well-being in the process. However, as we strive to be the best mothers we can be, it’s crucial to recognize the importance of self-care in nurturing our physical, emotional, and mental health.

Let’s explore finding balance as a mother by first acknowledging that self-care isn’t selfish but a necessary component of effective caregiving, from carving out moments of solitude for reflection and relaxation to engaging in activities that bring joy and fulfillment without compromising our commitment to our families. Whether setting boundaries, seeking support from loved ones, or embracing small acts of selfkindness, we aim to empower mothers to prioritize their well-being and encourage strength in life’s unavoidable challenges.

Above all, remember that self-care is not a luxury but a necessity, enabling us to show up as the best versions of ourselves for our families. As we celebrate the joys of motherhood, let’s also honour the meaning in celebrating Mother’s Day!

As we approach this special occasion, we must consider meaningful and thoughtful ways to reflect our love and admiration for our mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures.

Whether it’s a handcrafted piece of jewelry symbolizing your bond, a custom-made photo album capturing cherished memories, or a luxurious spa day to provide a well-deserved moment of relaxation. Above all else, though, the most precious gift we can offer is our time, attention, and heartfelt expressions of love. As we honour mothers on this special day, let’s cherish the moments we share and celebrate their immeasurable impact on our lives.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible mothers out there. Your love and strength inspire us every day.

THE CORAL SMART POOL’S MYLO SMART POOL MONITORING SYSTEM ADDS AN EXTRA LAYER OF SAFETY TO YOUR POOL

WORDS BY LORRAINE PELLEY

Drowning is the most common injury and death-related accident in this country. On average, over 400 people drown every year. Most drowning victims are youth. Children between the ages of 1 to 4 years old are at the highest risk of drowning and children between the ages of 5 to 9 years old are the second highest risk. In most child drowning cases, at least one adult is present at the time.

While drownings can happen anytime throughout the year and in any body of water, including bathtubs, it occurs most frequently during May to September. Almost two-thirds of these accidents happen during recreational activities.

Drowning accidents happen quickly. For youth and adults, it can take less than 60 seconds to drown while children can drown in as little as 20 seconds.

When someone is drowning, they don’t splash around or make a lot of noise. Instead, they are usually silent and appear to be struggling to keep their head above water. A drowning person will often have difficulty moving or treading water. Toddlers in particular don’t make any noises or show any signs of distress when they are drowning. They can slip underwater and sink to the bottom of a pool or waterbed quickly.

Prevention is key to reducing the risk of drowning accidents, especially with children. The best approach to water safety, especially with children, is a multi-layered approach that incorporates several preventative

measures and safety tools. These include:

• Wearing life jackets or floatation devices when in and around water.

• Supervising children and always keeping them within arm’s length in and around water.

• Using safety locks, gates, pool covers and other measures to restrict unsupervised access to pools and other bodies of water.

• Learn to swim by enrolling your family in swimming lessons.

• Taking a First Aid/CPR course so you know what to do in the event of a drowning accident.

• Using a Coral Smart Pool’s MYLO Smart Pool Monitoring System device.

The Coral Smart Pool’s MYLO Smart Pool Monitoring System is

the first and only AI powered antidrowning system on the market. It’s like having a virtual lifeguard at your pool at all times. The MYLO Smart Pool’s advanced technology uses underwater cameras to continually monitor pool activity and provide real time alerts of a potential drowning through an app on your phone or handheld device.

The Coral Smart Pool’s monitoring system is designed to detect all

activity and movement in a pool. The monitoring technology of the MYLO Smart Pool Monitoring System:

• Detects water activity can pick up movement in the pool including:

– When someone enters the water.

– Abnormal movements that indicate distress and drowning.

– Silent drowning.

• Calculates drowning risks.

• Escalated alarm system.

• Real-time analysis alerts.

• Above and below water views.

• In-pool visibility status.

Its AI technology is so sophisticated, it can easily detect normal pool movements versus abnormal movements or drowning incidents.

The Coral Smart Pool’s MYLO Smart Pool Monitoring System is designed for residential pool usage. The first of its kind, this virtual monitoring system can be used with any above and in-ground pool size by simply adding more cameras to bigger pools.

This lifesaving device is not meant to replace human supervision or other safety and preventative measures, it’s designed to add another layer of safety to your water fun. Because drownings can happen so quickly, this state-of-the-art digital monitoring system provides an extra set of virtual eyes to your pool.

The Coral Smart Pool’s MYLO Smart Pool Monitoring System retails for $1,499 and is available on the company’s website at coralsmartpool.com/mylo

ASD BAND: CREATING MUSIC AND BREAKING STEREOTYPES ABOUT PEOPLE WITH AUTISM

Spenser Murphy didn’t have many friends when he was growing up. His mom, Pat Murphy, a single parent, recalls how he was never invited to other children’s birthday parties. When he was in the seventh grade, Spenser was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder.

Autism is a neurodiverse condition that is often characterized by challenges with communication, paying attention and social interactions, restrictive and repetitive behaviours or interests, and difficulties with learning, moving, sleeping, and activities of daily living.

After his diagnosis, the Murphy’s grew closer as a family while developing a deeper understanding of autism. They found a supportive community at Jake’s House, a charitable organization that provides support and lasting hope to people with Autism and their families.

It was through Jake’s House that Spenser’s life changed forever in ways he and his mom could never have imagined. As a talented drummer, Spenser was invited to perform with three other musically talented adults with autism in front of a crowd of 2,000 at The Sony Centre

alongside Roger Hodgson Orchestra show during a 2019 World Autism Awareness Day event.

It was obvious from their first performance that this incredibly talented four-member band was meant to do more. What was supposed to be a one-time gig quickly turned into a musical career. ASD Band is made up of Ron Adea who plays the piano, lead singer Rawan Tuffaha, guitarist and vocalist Jackson Begley, and Spenser who is the drummer. ASD stands for autism spectrum disorder.

ASD Band currently has one album available on several streaming channels. Their second album will be released this month. Their songs are all original tracks written by the four members. The inspiration for all their music comes from their own personal life experiences as well as their experiences and challenges they encounter living with autism.

Along with writing and recording their own music, ASD Band has travelled across North America and played numerous sold-out shows at various festivals and events.

Along with the tours and albums, ASD Band recently competed in America’s Got Talent Canada where they received a standing ovation from the audience and judges after performing one of their original songs for their audition.

A documentary about the band’s early years, ASD Band: The Movie, was produced and released in April 2022 at Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto. It is currently available to stream at https://watch.showandtell. film/watch/asd-band-enjoy-the-show. The award-winning documentary is a heartwarming and authentic story

about the band’s early years when they first started in the music industry. It follows them along their journey and showcases the challenges and victories the band faced as they wrote and recorded their first album while navigating through a new and often foreign world. The documentary was directed by Mark Bone and produced by Escarpment Films, Edelman and Jake’s House.

People with ASD face many negative and harmful stigmas and stereotypes. ASD Band is not only creating great music, they are breaking all these stereotypes and giving hope to others with ASD with their fabulous songs and performances, as well as with the help of their marketing firm Edelman.

For Spenser, joining the band is super cool and has changed his life. In the last five years, he has made many great friends and has travelled a lot. His proud mom is grateful to Jake’s House for all the support and opportunities they have received as a family since Spenser’s diagnosis. She’s see how much more confident and independent Spenser is and how much he has grown as a person and artist.

ASD Band plans to continue producing more music and touring.

SAFARI NIAGARA

When we think of Niagara, we think of the thundering falls or the bright lights of kitschy Clifton Hill. But Niagara is exceptionally diverse, offering an incredible range of attractions.

Venture beyond The Falls and its environs for a memorable afternoon discovering wildlife at Safari Niagara.

Safari Niagara is a privately-owned and operated accredited nature park that is home to close to 1000 animals. The park, which supports multiple conservation efforts, was founded with the vision of providing visitors with the opportunity to meet animals up close.

You’ll find many of the crowdpleasing species here, including lions, giraffes, and wolves. But you’ll also meet a number of animals that are now incredibly rare in the wild. The Syrian brown bear, for example, has been extirpated in the country for which it is named and now exists only in smaller pockets in Turkey and the Caucasus. The Clouded Leopard, meanwhile,

one of the most beautiful cats you’ll ever see, is considered vulnerable in its Tibet and China homeland.

The hope is that seeing species at risk up close, learning about them and their ways, will inspire visitors to share Safari Niagara’s goal of conserving biodiversity.

Don’t miss the daily shows, including the Wonders of Flight Demonstration starring hawks, owls, and vultures; Reptiles of the World, where you get close to a range of

creepy-crawlies; and Zooniversity, an interactive presentation featuring mammals from around the world and with a focus on conservation. Also make sure to experience the walkthrough budgie exhibit, where these energic birds will flitter and flutter and land upon you. It’s a huge hit with kids.

A highlight of Safari Niagara are its behind-the-scenes tours, which offer patrons a more intimate experience with the animals. Each of the four distinct, 45-minute tours highlights one specific species: giraffes, lions, rhinos, and bears. Children love the opportunity to feed giraffes and gently rub a rhino’s famously thick (and surprisingly sensitive) skin. A percentage of proceeds from the behind-the-scenes tours is donated to wildlife conservation efforts worldwide.

Animals are the highlight, of course, but Safari Niagara offers other attractions as well. There’s splash pad ideal of hot summer days, languid

paddle boat rides, an elevated rope course, some rides and a play area focused on younger children, and a whimsical carousel.

Safari Niagara offers so many experiences, all of them intended to foster connections between people and wildlife. It’s a great way to spend a day.
