This school year rise+shine on time

hate waking up early. There, I said it. There are some people who are naturally early risers; I am not one of them. Getting up before the sun could have saved me a lot of grief when I was in university. Chasing after a departing bus was a regular occurrence for me but often meant a prof or two admonishing me as I was slipping into their lecture late.

This could have been easily avoided had I not stayed up so late the night before watching Gossip Girl (I’m aging myself here, leave me alone.)

To avoid being me, here are some tips to get you in the swing of things for the upcoming school year:

GO TO BED EARLY

I know, this seems like common sense, but you would be surprised how long it took me to realize how vital this step was. Going to bed at midnight won’t do you any good if you’ve got an alarm set for 5 a.m. to make it for your 8 a.m. class. If you’re someone who requires eight solid hours of sleep, aim to be in bed by 10 p.m. at the latest. A good night’s rest requires five-six complete sleep cycles.

MOVE YOUR ALARM CLOCK

I am the queen of the snooze button – it is not uncommon for me to hit it six times at a minimum. To curb my penchant for snoozing, I moved my alarm clock into the kitchen. Now, I have to get out of bed. The movement and turning on all the lights are enough to not only rouse me from my sleep, but also get my body moving.

PLAN YOUR DAY THE NIGHT BEFORE

Most life coaches say it’s important to have a plan. The night before, make a list of the top five things you wish to accomplish the next day and rank them by order of importance. Treat your tasks like an avalanche method with the most difficult tasks taking precedence over the smaller ones.

What’s another advantage to waking up early? You’ll get to check out any new listings that have popped up for a student rental for the year before anyone else.

Remember, just like getting up in the morning – you should always start your rental search early. Good luck this school year!

STAY INFORMED FINANCIAL AID TIPS

Planning for post-secondary: 3 must-have resources P

lanning for a post-secondary education and future career can be a daunting task for teenagers. As they step into this new phase in their educational journey, they are faced with critical decisions. Fortunately, there are some key resources available to guide the process and help students make the most of their post-secondary experience.

GETTING INFORMED

The first decision a student needs to make before deciding on a program or a school is a big one – what does that dream job look like? This decision can be daunting, but thorough research can help take a lengthy number of options down to a short list. One place to start is with census data.

It allows students to research the current job market with up-to-date information, including growing sectors, job trends and potential opportunities. Students can also find visual data tools that give a sense of the approximate income they can expect to make based on the job type, education level and location with a simple online search for “census, data visualization tool, employment.” By factoring in this data alongside their interests and lifestyle, a student can make an informed and confident decision about their future.

TAKE A TOUR

Now that students have an idea about their career prospects, it’s time to choose

the perfect program or school. School tours are an excellent resource; most institutions book by appointment and also offer campus tours before applications are due. For those considering schools too far to visit in person, university fairs, job fairs and online tours are also a great solution. It’s worth noting that touring multiple institutions, even those not initially at the top of a student’s list, can help them identify their priorities. The key is to plan these tours or fair visits early in the process, not right at the last minute before applications are due.

FIND FINANCIAL AID

There are many scholarship and bursary opportunities but tracking them down can be overwhelming. Fortunately, there are a number of scholarship-finder websites to help with online research. A quick online search for “financial aid for students” will reveal many resources and options. These help students discover scholarships and bursaries they are eligible for and how to apply for them. Remember, not all are awarded based on academic grades alone, so it’s a good idea to explore these options and find the right fit for your student.

With these resources, the teen in your life will be ready to step confidently into the next big adventure of post-secondary education.

Energize with caution: New labels on caffeinated energy drinks

How do you power through your latenight work or study sessions? Do you rely on caffeinated energy drinks, coffee or chocolate? These foods all contain caffeine, which you may want to limit. Health Canada recommends a daily intake of no more than 400 mg of caffeine for adults over 18. For reference, energy drinks can contain up to 180 mg of caffeine per can.

Supplemented foods, such as caffeinated energy drinks, are regulated by Health Canada. They require labels to help you know what ingredients like caffeine or taurine have been added to them.

Health Canada recommends a daily intake of no more than 400 mg of caffeine for adults over 18.

Other examples of supplemented foods include snack bars and fruit drinks, which could be supplemented with:

• minerals such as calcium

• vitamins such as vitamin C

• amino acids such as L-leucine

As of January 1st, 2026, all supplemented foods will be required to have new labels, but some are already starting

to appear on the market, so here’s what you can expect to see.

All supplemented foods will show a supplemented food facts table instead of a nutrition facts table. There will be a “Supplemented with” section listing the type and amount of each supplemental ingredient, like caffeine.

Some of these foods will also carry a caution identifier, which includes an exclamation mark and the words “Supplemented” and “Health Canada” on the front, alerting you to read cautions written on the back or side of the product. An example of a caution is: “Do not drink more than 1 serving per day.”

Whether for yourself or other family members, find more information at canada.ca/supplemented-foods.

BUDGET BEAT

during the school year 5 ways to save money

Whether you’ve just started university or have been in college for a couple of years, being a student can be financially straining. Of course, saving money as a student is more than just pinching pennies – it’s about mastering the art of budgeting, making savvy choices and enjoying your independence. We all know the costs, but what exactly can we do to watch our wallets without compromising the student experience?

Here are five creative ways you can reduce your expenses, instill good spending habits and still enjoy student life this year:

With a few tricks in your back pocket, saving money in university or college doesn’t have to be so draining.

GET THRIFTY

One of the most fun and sustainable ways to save money as a student is through thrifting. Whether it’s new clothes for going out or unique furniture for your dorm room, thrift stores

offer a cache of options that are often both cost-friendly and chic – and you’re way less likely to own the same thing as someone else on campus. On top of being an affordable option, compared to major fashion brands, it’s also a more sustainable way to find new items.

PLAN TO SAVE MONEY

There are plenty of apps and software out there that help you to find more cost-effective spending options. For example, if you love shopping, One Red Maple is an app that helps you locate your favourite items in locally owned stores. Its browser plug-in compares prices and products in real-time so you can make informed choices about where to purchase all your favourite things.

HAVE A POTLUCK PARTY

Going out to eat and drink can quickly drain your wallet if you aren’t careful, but it can be hard to say no to a night out with friends. Instead, opt to host a potluck party and encourage everyone to bring their favourite dish and drink. You won’t break the bank and you’ll have fun with friends that can last the whole evening.

20 Spring/Summer 2024 *Prices subject to change without notice

PLAN AHEAD

SEEK SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS

Many schools and organizations offer scholarship and grant opportunities you can discover with just a little digging. This financial aid can be based on everything from academic achievement, specific fields of study, areas of need and more. Spend time researching and applying to help supplement some of your educational expenses.

FIND ON-CAMPUS WORK

Most college and university campuses offer on-campus jobs for students, which could be a great way to ease your

financial strain and make some new friends in the process. If you’re not sure where to start, check out your school’s career education department, which can provide job boards to browse or stepby-step instructions on how to secure a position that matches your skills. For example, a writing support centre could be looking for strong writers to help tutor students, while an on-campus residence could be looking for front desk clerks.

With a few tricks in your back pocket, saving money in university or college doesn’t have to be so draining.

LIFE TIPS RETIREMENT PLANNING

Will young Canadians ever be able to retire?

Today’s environment looks tough for younger Canadians. Persistent inflation, higher interest rates and reports of unemployment and underemployment continue to be common. Retirement may feel particularly unachievable for this cohort as workplace pensions become increasingly rare, even for those who are able to find work that is rewarding and fulfilling.

So, how will an entire generation save enough money to retire comfortably?

WORKPLACE PLANS

If you have access to a company plan, how much income will it generate in retirement? A defined benefit plan offers a guaranteed income for the rest of the retiree’s life, depending on length of time you worked at the company. A defined-contribution pension puts more risk on the individual, with the employer matching individual contributions; funds are then invested in the market and the individual controls the level of risk.

TAX-SHELTERED SAVINGS

An important part of retirement income planning is individual savings. Common options include registered retirement savings plans, which defer taxes until after the funds are withdrawn, or tax-free sav-

ings accounts, in which after-tax dollars can be invested and grown tax-free.

SAVVY INVESTMENTS

Another possible pillar of your retirement income may involve investing in non-registered methods, like on the stock market without a registered account or in real estate. These can sometimes come with big rewards, but also have risks. It’s up to the individual to decide whether they want to make investment decisions on their own or work with an advisor.

GOVERNMENT PENSION

At the core of your retirement plan is the Canada Pension Plan, which is managed by CPP Investments, a professional investment management organization that invests contributions not needed to pay current benefits. Contributions to the plan are deducted from your paycheque when you start working full-time.

Currently, the plan is expected to cover about one-quarter of retirement income for the average Canadian. Changes decided on in 2016 will provide younger Canadians with supplemental benefits when they retire.

A recent report by the federal government reveals that it will continue to be sustainable for 75 years, and beyond.

ways to add eggs to your diet

ggs are a nutritional powerhouse packed with high-quality protein as well as vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, D, E and iron. It’ll level up your snack time and brighten up even the greyest day. This elegant yet comforting pasta dish is the perfect lunch or dinner.

LEMON ASPARAGUS CARBONARA

Prep time: 30 mins Cook time: 20 min Serves: 4-6

Ingredients:

• 8-10 eggs, divided

• 1 cup (250 ml) freshly grated Parmesan cheese (plus extra for serving, if desired)

• 1 large lemon, zested and juiced

• ½ tsp (2 ml) salt (plus extra for pasta water)

• 1 lb (454 g) spaghetti or linguine

• 2 tbsp (30 ml) butter

• 1 bunch asparagus, trimmed and thinly sliced into bite-sized pieces

• 2 large garlic cloves, minced

Directions:

1. Separate 2 eggs, reserving whites for another purpose. Whisk the 2 yolks with 2 whole eggs, Parmesan cheese, lemon zest, 2 tbsp (30 ml) lemon juice, salt and black pepper; set aside.

2. Fill a large, deep skillet with water and bring to a simmer. Add 1 tbsp (15 ml) lemon juice. Crack 4 to 6 eggs (use 1 per serving) into ramekins and slide into the simmering skillet of water. Poach eggs for 3 to 4 minutes or until whites are set but yolks are still runny. Use a slotted spoon to carefully transfer poached eggs to a papertowel-lined plate.

3. Meanwhile, cook spaghetti according to package timing for al dente in a dutch oven of boiling water seasoned with 1 tbsp (15 ml) salt. Reserve 2 cups (500 ml) of hot pasta water before draining pasta. Reserve pasta in colander and return dutch oven to stovetop; set over medium heat.

4. Add butter and asparagus to dutch oven; sauté for 3 minutes. Add garlic; sauté for 1 minute.

5. Gradually whisk about 1/2 cup (125 ml) of reserved pasta water into the egg, cheese and lemon mixture to temper it. Add hot, drained spaghetti and egg mixture to asparagus. Cook, tossing constantly and adding additional pasta cooking water until pasta is saucy and heated through.

6. Divide pasta between serving bowls and top with a poached egg. Serve immediately with extra cheese on the side.
