So these are the EntreConf Awards: welcome…

Thank you for joining us this evening for a celebration of entrepreneurialism through the region, across multiple sectors and at various sizes and stages of business.

Theory is, gather a whole load of smart people in one place at one time, add in some thoughtful insights in a stimulating setting, help prompt new business thinking – and great things can happen. Support with our majorscale promotion of entrepreneurialism and, well, none of us knows how many thousands of flowers will bloom, how many valuable connections can be forged, how much fostering of talent will happen, and how many lucrative relationships, even investments might be made.

That’s part of the challenge of entrepreneurialism. Idea, theory, iteration, learning, refinement: repeat. Like a rocket in the ground, no one can be sure where with even the most minor of adjustments it might land.

Entrepreneurs get to set their own trajectory, to create their worlds as they wish, from their half hunches and blank sheets of paper to worked ideas. And they get to define success on their own terms.

Usually, that is. For once, not wholly tonight though, where the ultimate success of winning one of the inaugural EntreConf Awards has been defined by our panel of judges.

Maxine Laceby started Absolute Collagen from her kitchen table aged 50, and with no business experience, she had no idea the business would take off to such stratospheric heights and become the multi-million-pound wellness brand it is today.

Her journey from the conception of her unique formula to where Absolute Collagen is now has been fast, furious, and in her own words, ‘a whole lot of fun.’

GREG INGHAM

Greg Ingham co-founded and owns MediaClash with his wife Jane. He created and runs EntreConf and is co-host of the Awards tonight. MediaClash is an events producer and creator of the Bristol Life Awards, Bristol Property Awards and equivalents in Bath, Cardiff and Exeter, plus conferences.

It is also a magazine publisher with the leading south west titles, Bristol Life and Bath Life. Greg founded and runs Creative Bath; has advised a diverse range of media, tech and legal companies;

Integrity and giving back in all areas are inherent to Maxine personally and professionally, and why she became a patron of the Prince’s Trust in 2021. In July 2022, Absolute Collagen was also named 4th in The Sunday Times Hundred.

Maxine is incredibly passionate about young people and supports The Prince’s Trust Young Enterprise Programme by telling the story. From her humble beginnings living on a council estate with a single mother to her ADHD, which she sees as her superpower. Reiterating how proud she is of her childhood and roots, the beginning, she firmly believes, gave her the tools and resilience needed to start and build her business.

created the computer games charity GamesAid; and chaired the Theatre Royal Bath for several years, starting its Creative Fund. He was previously the chief exec of Future for an 18-year odyssey from a five-magazine independent start-up, to its sale to Pearson and contested MBO, to flotation as an international multiplatform media plc.

ASHLEY BREWER, CEO, SCIENCE CREATES INCUBATORS

Ashley has expertise in managing research facilities and currently manages 45,000 sq ft across two incubators which support a community of 40 member companies from pre-seed to Series A, who operate across therapeutics, diagnostics, advanced materials and agritech sectors.

DAN FALLON, FOUNDER, SEARCHSTAR

Dan’s journey has involved founding SearchStar as well as co-founding ZapMap.com, which is heading towards Series B as the UK’s largest EV charging app. He has expertise in business growth, online advertising and marketing with a strong entrepreneurial streak.

GLYN BLAIZE, COO, AMDARIS

Glyn is a seasoned business executive and one of driving forces behind Amdaris’ recent exponential growth. With over two decades of experience in the IT industry, Glyn has built a remarkable track record in driving business growth and innovation.

LAUREN COUCH, CHIEF REVENUE OFFICER, GROWTH LENDING

Lauren specialises in working capital and growth finance for SMEs. She has worked in the financial services industry for 22 years, in roles spanning commercial banking, invoice finance, venture debt and private equity.
